Abstract [en]
Think tanks are important social and political actors in the Swedish society because of their increasing exposure in the media. Immigration is a highly politicized issue in Sweden today, especially due to the refugee crisis of 2015 and the upcoming elections of 2018. Our thesis studies how immigration is framed by one specific actor in Sweden, namely think tanks, which attempt to influence policy-making and public opinion. While the field of research on policy advice institutions is rather significant in the American context, studies on Swedish think tanks are still rather scarce. From a research perspective this topic is of great importance because think tanks work behind the scenes, and our thesis helps expose their agenda. The aim of this thesis is to explore how three established Swedish think tanks with diverging ideological positions, Motpol, Timbro and Arena Idé frame immigration. We do so through a comparative small-N study and with the use of textual analysis. The analytical framework is based on Robert Entman’s version of framing theory and the three ideologies far-right, liberalism and socialism help us position the studied think tanks. Our analysis shows that the three think tanks differ in some respects from their ideological ideal type when framing immigration in Sweden.
