Abstract [en]

This study is situated in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the measures of social distancing and social isolation prompted a migration from the traditional campus-based environment and motivated further adoption of remote, blended and hybrid modes of education. A case study approach was adopted, involving fifteen semi-structured interviews with university teachers about their teaching practice and experience during that time.

Drawing on Cultural-Historical Activity Theory, the thesis conceptualizes teaching expertise as the capacity to organize the social relations through which student learning activity is enacted. Central to this account is the concept of social presence, understood not as a psychological perception or feeling but as the social positioning of participants within their activity. The pandemic brought a situation that disrupted the campus-based education and corresponding pedagogical practices compelling teachers to act as subjects of mediating activity—creating systems of social relations necessary to realize students’ potential for learning into actual learning activity. In this thesis, teaching expertise is conceptualized as the outcome of this mediating activity: the capacity to act under disruptive conditions. In this sense, expertise is not reducible to the mastery of operations comprising professional practice, though it presupposes operational competence or literacy as one of its conditions of development. Thus, the main contribution of this thesis lies in clarifying the relation between disruption and expertise.
