Bakgrund:

Studien uppmärksammar att medieanvändning har blivit särskild hög hos både kvinnor, barn och ungdomar. Unga kvinnor och tonårsflickor är också en sårbar grupp, avseende samhällets förväntningar på kvinnokroppen.

Syfte:

Syftet var att beskriva tonårsflickor och unga kvinnors uppfattningar av sociala mediers roll relaterat till kroppsuppfattning och psykisk ohälsa.

Metod:

Denna uppsats är en litteraturöversikt. Under analysen granskades 16 vetenskapliga artiklar och efter kvalitetsgranskningen återstod nio artiklar som använts till denna studies resultat. Åtta av dessa är kvantitativa och medan en har en mixad metod.

Resultat:

Analysen resulterade i tre teman. Det första temat berör algoritmens och innehållets funktion på sociala medier. Det andra temat fokuserar på självobjektifiering, kroppsmissnöje samt kroppstillfredställelse. Det tredje temat belyser psykisk hälsa, kroppsneutralitet och kroppspositivitet. Resultatet framhäver både positiva och negativa aspekter av det studerade fenomenet i form av exempelvis negativa känslotillstånd, självobjektifiering och kroppsneutralitet, beroende på innehållet samt användningen av sociala medier.

Konklusion:

Vidare forskning kring sociala medier och dess påverkan hos unga är nödvändigt för bredare kunskap inom området. Studien betonar vikten av personcentrerad vård, för att kunna möta individers enskilda behov. Det kan konstateras att unga kvinnor och tonårsflickor kan uppleva en negativ effekt på den objektiva och subjektiva hälsan. Dock kan sociala medier användas på ett medvetet sätt, vilket kan främja den psykiska hälsan och en sund medieanvändning.

Background:

This study aims to highlight that media use has become notably high among women, children and young people. Young women and teenage girls are particularly vulnerable group, as social media plays a major role in spreading and reinforcing societal norms about how the female body should look.

Aim:

The aim is to describe how teenage girls and young women perceives the role of social media in relation to body image and mental health.

Method:

This study is a literature review. During the analyses, 16 scientific articles were reviewed and after the quality review ten remained, but one was used for the discussion. Eight of these are quantitative while the last one has a mixed method.

Results:

The analysis resulted in three themes. The first theme analyzes the potential role of algorithms and their content-related functions on social media. The second theme focuses on self-objectification, body dissatisfaction and body satisfaction. The third theme acknowledged mental health, body neutrality and body positivity. The result highlights both positive and negative aspects of the phenomena, for example negative emotional states, self-objectification and body positivity, depending on the content and the usage of social media.

Conclusion:

Further research regarding social media and its impact on young people is necessary for widening the knowledge within the field. This study emphasizes the importance of person-centered care to be able to meet the needs of the individual. It can be stated that young women and can experience a negative effect on both the objective and subjective health when using social media. However, social media can be used in a conscious way, which can be beneficial to mental health and healthy media usage.
