Background: About 100,000 people dies each year in Sweden and most of them are in need of palliative care. This means that most nurses in their profession get in touch with patients in their final stages of life.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to illuminate nurses' experiences of caring for patients in palliative care in hospitals outside palliative units.

Method: This is a literature study. A number of 7 articles have been analyzed by using Friberg´s (2017) five-step method for analyzing qualitative studies. The results are presented based on two main themes and four sub-themes.

Results: The results show positive experiences from nurses during the care of patients in palliative care because they felt that it was a part of their profession. The results also revealed that the lack of good environment, lack of time and difficulties in communicating with patients wereome of the obstacles which the nurses experienced. This made it difficult in maintaining dignified care to patients at the end of life.

Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that expanded knowledge and support for nurses in palliative care is needed to perform dignified care for patients in palliative care.
