Vad är svenska bilisters inställning till självkörande bilars ageranden i etiskt svåra situationer?2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate Swedish motorists' attitudes towards self-driving cars. The thesis highlights advanced ethical decisions and ethical problems that exist for self-driving cars.

To answer the question "What is the attitude of Swedish motorists towards self-driving cars and their actions in ethically difficulty situations?" a qualitative method has been applied. Artificial intelligence is a broad area with many domains, and therefore a delimitation has been made to the automotive industry.

By using interviews and literature studies, the ethical dilemmas have been established for self-driving cars. The results of this literature study have been analyzed together with interviews for the study.

Problems that have been identified with self-driving cars is that they are responsible for the event of accidents and decisive in ethical situations. Another problem identified in this study is the question of whom should be given priority in a situation where an accident is inevitable. The result has revealed that the actions of cars do not always comply with the driver's ethical principles, and that society usually lacks knowledge in the area of self-driving cars. People could act on reflexes in sudden incidents, which is different from a system that can make faster calculated decisions.

Avatarers pedagogiska implikationer för lärande i Virtual Reality: Empirisk studie om Tenstar Simulations AB’s avatar-teknik2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is a part of a research project between Tenstar Simulation AB and University West with the purpose of developing pedagogical knowledge regarding Tenstar Simulation’s avatar-technology in Virtual Reality (VR) as an educational tool. VR has become more and more common in education with the purpose of making the learning process for students more efficient. The purpose of this study is to explore and investigate the pedagogical implications of VR, with a particular emphasis on Avatar technologies, for a teacher’s teaching context. The data collection method used in this study was semi-structured interviews, the interviews were individual interviews and the participants consisted of both teachers and Tenstar Simulation’s employees. The results indicated among other things that both VR and avatars have pedagogical benefits, where VR is a meaningful tool to facilitate training that is applicable to real life situations. Whereas avatars can afford the teacher more ways to observe the student’s actions in the VR-environment as well as affording more ways of communication between teacher and student. However, one challenge regarding potential teachers being critical to the use of the technologies was highlighted.

The Role of Business Intelligence in Government: A Case Study of a Swedish Municipality Contact Center2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this study is to investigate the role Business Intelligence (BI) can play in government and more specifically at the municipality level. The study aims to investigate how data collected from a municipality Contact Center can be leveraged with the help of a BI solution. The study focuses on the Contact Center at Järfälla Kommun (municipality) and investigates whether a BI implementation can help to realize more effective planning, resource allocation and improved services and e-services. Municipality Contact Centers are becoming an increasingly popular precedent providing municipal residents with a centralized service where they can make inquiries, provide information, lodge complaints or commend actions related to activities within the specific municipality. BI can turn raw data into concrete figures and reports, map patterns and trends and support effective decision making. It can also however be costly and difficult to integrate and face resistance due to perceived complexity. This paper aims to take such notions into consideration and investigate the feasibility of implementing such a solution in the context of a municipality Contact Center.

This paper identifies various benefits and drawbacks from literature which are then modeled into a SWOT framework. In addition, semi-structured interviews are utilized in this study and targeted at stakeholders knowledgeable in the Contact Center, BI, or both. Findings from the SWOT framework will be measured against the findings from the interviews and an analysis of correlations between the two sources will be investigated.

Utredning av acceptans på Augmented Reality applikationer: En kvantitativ undersökning av framtidens teknik2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study a research has been conducted to find out how consumers experience Augmented Reality applications. This was done to see which underlying factors are behind each individual's experience. Are there any connections between user acceptance and unique participants that determines how they respond to technology? The research has been conducted with quantitative methods and advocates positivism. Surveys has been the method used to gather data about the user and has primarily been done with the face-to-face method. The users answered the survey after they had tested out features in IKEA Place, the test involved them placing out furniture in the application and then numerically rated the experience through the questions which was in the questionnaire. The result shows that the younger target audience retained a higher average value, median. The distribution test reveal that there were less spread on respective factors PU, PEOU and ATU in the younger target audience. While gender does not seem to have any significance to how acceptance is determined on AR-applications. The research reveals that the acceptance is affected in a negative way with increased age.

Beslut inför val av utvecklingsteknik: En kvalitativ undersökning om hur utvecklare och företag resonerar kring val av utvecklingsteknik för mobila enheter2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The use of mobile devices such as cellular phones and tablets have over the years risen in popularity. This increases the need to develop software that is suitable for these devices (Awad, El-Shihy, 2014). But because of the range of different platforms such as PC-desktops, tablets and mobile phones, app development has become more difficult. As companies want to reach out to as many users as possible the resources are not always there to meet the demand for that type of development. The aim of this study is to explore how developers and companies' reason when facing a choice between different technologies for web development, by examining how a decision is made as well as the conditions that govern that choice. In order to explore this, we have conducted interviews with four different companies and a total of eight interviewees with different roles such as web developer, IT-architect and CEO.

Through our interviews we have concluded that first and foremost it is important to get information of new technology and then the acceptance of new technology. Second it is important to work out the conditions that are required for new technology, and finally to make the right decision when choosing of new technology. In that decision you must consider hard conditions and soft conditions where hard conditions pertain to technical aspects such as performance and effectiveness while the soft conditions refer to staff and their acceptance of new technology.

Furthermore, this study has shown that staff is a very important pillar for decision making, it is after all they in the end who will be working with the new technology and therefore their acceptance of the technologies ease of use and usefulness is vital. However, this study has shown that the size of a company has an effect on the acceptance of new technology with the developers. Despite companies using the same decision strategy the size of the company can mean a different way to communicate within the company. In this study we observed that in a larger company the developers had little to no insight into the decision process and you had to work with what you got. Whereas in smaller companies we observed that developers had much more insight and possibilities to have their voices heard because of the ability to communicate and the closeness to the decision makers. Further it was shown that it was not only important to have the current staff in mind but also future staff, with this we mean that companies have to make themselves an attractive place to work with choices of technology that will attract new developers.

Accessibility- The interaction experiences of visually impaired people with mobile application using assistive technology.: A qualitative study of a banking application2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Banks have evolved from providing paper-based banking solutions to providing the most cutting-edge technologies, such as mobile banking. Because there are more phones on the market than PCs, mobile banking has gotten greater attention in recent years. A significant number of blind people rely on smartphone-based assistive technology to carry out everyday tasks. Due to built-in characteristics such as accessibility, usability, and increased interactions, smartphone-based assistive devices are becoming increasingly popular among the blind. In order to give a better user experience, major IT firms have started to add accessibility elements that enable the inclusion of disabled individuals. However, when it comes to how people with visual impairment engage with smartphones, these inclusive efforts fall short. This paper looks at how people with visual impairments interact with mobile apps and the challenges they face with accessibility. The issues were then mapped to the relevant WCAG2.0 success criteria to see how extensive and sufficient WCAG 2.0 is when it comes to covering mobile accessibility issues for blind and visually impaired users. To conduct the research, a prototype of a banking application, specifically a loan application journey, was examined. In order to learn about the users' pain points, five people were interviewed. The results show that most of the success criteria were met, allowing as many people as possible to use the mobile application.

The Development and Evaluation of an Animated Video for Pre- and Postoperative Instructions for Patients with Osteoarthritis: A Design Science Research Approach2024In: Geriatrics, E-ISSN 2308-3417, Vol. 9, no 19, p. 1-11Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a condition in the hip or knee joints that develops during a long period of time and sometimes needs hip or knee joint replacement surgery when pain gets too intense for the patient. This paper describes how an animated video for pre- and postoperative instructions for patients with osteoarthritis was designed. The design science research (DSR) approach was followed by creating a web-based animated video. The web-based animated video is used to support surgical departments with education for patients suffering from OA. In the web-based animated video, information about OA surgical treatment and its pre- and post-arrangements was included. The relevance, the rigor, and the design cycles were focused on, with some iterations of and improvements in the animations. Even after implementation, there was a feedback-loop with comments from the surgeons and their patients. Moreover, as more departments will use the web-based animated video, they want to make their special mark on it, so that further changes will be made. This paper presents the design and successful implementation of an animated video for pre- and postoperative instructions for patients with osteoarthritis, tightly linked to the patient journey and the workflow of healthcare professionals. The animated video serves not only as a tool to improve care but also as a basis for further scientific research studies.

How to Apply and Manage Critical Success Factors in Healthcare Information Systems Development?: †2023In: Systems, ISSN 2079-8954, Vol. 11, no 9, p. -17, article id 469Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Studies on Critical Success Factors (CSFs) in Healthcare Information Systems (HIS) development projects have traditionally often been limited to retrospectively identifying CSFs in a finished project. In this paper, we focus on how to prospectively apply and manage CSFs in HIS projects. Based on a holistic perspective and systems thinking, an inductive research strategy was applied and a single in-depth case study was conducted. The findings include detailed descriptions that contribute to further understanding of how to prospectively apply and manage CSFs in HIS projects. The analysis reveals that CSFs must be applied differently and managed on various system levels. Furthermore, it shows how interactions exist between different system levels, both in the case of a specific CSF and between different CSFs on various system levels. Our analysis framework and findings indicate new directions for future research: how to prospectively apply and manage CSFs in HIS development projects can now be investigated both in a more holistic way and more in detail. Finally, healthcare practitioners can use the descriptions as practical checklists for guiding them in how to realize situational adaptation of CSFs in HIS projects across different system levels.

Interaction Gaps in PhD Education and ICT as a Way Forward: Results from a Study in Sweden2016In: International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning, E-ISSN 1492-3831, Vol. 17, no 3, p. 360-383Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Many research studies have highlighted the low completion rate and slow progress in PhD education. Universities strive to improve throughput and quality in their PhD education programs. In this study, the perceived problems of PhD education are investigated from PhD students' points of view, and how an Information and Communication Technology Support System (ICTSS) may alleviate these problems. Data were collected through an online open questionnaire sent to the PhD students at the Department of (the institution's name has been removed during the double-blind review) with a 59% response rate. The results revealed a number of problems in the PhD education and highlighted how online technology can support PhD education and facilitate interaction and communication, affect the PhD students' satisfaction, and have positive impacts on PhD students' stress. A system was prototyped, in order to facilitate different types of online interaction through accessing a set of online and structured resources and specific communication channels. Although the number of informants was not large, the result of the study provided some rudimentary ideas that refer to interaction problems and how an online ICTSS may facilitate PhD education by providing distance and collaborative learning, and PhD students' self-managed communication.

Communication and Collaboration Gaps among PhD Students and ICT as a Way Forward: Results from a Study in Sweden2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The low completion rate and slow progress in PhD education have been highlighted in many studies. However, the interaction problems and communication gaps that PhD students encounter make this attempt even more challenging. The aim of this study is to investigate the peer interaction problems and ICT based solutions from PhD students’ perspectives. The data collection method was an online questionnaire and in-depth interviews were used to follow up. The target group for the survey was the PhD students in Computer Science at Stockholm University. The total number of respondents for the survey was 53 PhD students and eleven randomly selected PhD students for the interviews. The results reflected a lack of peer interaction as an important issue in the perspective of the students. Based on this, the study showed several ICT solutions that have the potential to reduce the interaction problems and thereby improve PhD students’ collaborative learning and research quality.

The key requirements toward a secure Access Control Model for the Internet of Things2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In today’s technical reality, we are surrounded by a large number of devices with a never-ending growing network. This network is constantly retrieving and sending data, and an unlimited exchange of information is consistently occurring. In other words, this concept is known as the Internet of Things. However beneficial the Internet of Things can be for our world; the security and privacy issues must be addressed. Within this research, the security and privacy issues will be addressed through the access control area. The Internet of Things is a highly demanding and dynamic environment, making access control models complicated and somewhat difficult to design. This research was done to obtain what is required of an access control model for the Internet of Things, to ensure privacy and security. Furthermore, the research focused on how developers are applying the security requirements when designing IoT access control models. The research found that requirements included technical constraints of the IoT environment as well as following the requirements of the CIA(Confidentiality, integrity & availability) triad. In addition, the research found that developers apply different methods to achieve the requirements of the CIA triad.

Patients' perspective on e-consultation in Sweden: a quantitative study of factors influencing patients' attitudes and usage.2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digital technologies are becoming more and more part of everyday life. Digital transformation brings benefits as well as challenges for individuals. New health care technologies are providing high-quality treatments for patients. This study investigates patients’ perception toward one of these new technologies, which is Electronic-Consultation. The focus of this research is on challenges and benefits that patients relate to the usage of e-consultation services in Sweden. Additionally, it studies the impact of individuals’ characteristics on their perceptions toward convenience and effectiveness of e-consultation, and in turn, the usage of it. The research has been done using the quantitative approach through a web-based questionnaire. The results show that people have a general high satisfaction with current e-consultation services in Sweden and do not experience many challenges. As a measurement for individuals’ characteristics, selfefficacy has been applied which refers to individuals' capabilities and beliefs in their own capacity to perform behaviors to produce specific performance achievements. To get more precise data, e-consultation self-efficacy (ECSE) has been chosen respectively. Results show that ECSE has a positive influence on people’s usage of these services. An interesting finding of this study is that positive perception does not always influence the decision toward the level of usage of e-consultation.

Work-based learning through negotiated projects: Exploring learning at the boundary2016In: Higher Education, Skills and Work-based Learning, ISSN 2042-3896, E-ISSN 2042-390X, Vol. 6, no 1, p. 2-19Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

More collaborative and open learning models are suggested as part of the paradigm shift in the way knowledge is produced, distributed and used. This paper aims to explore a work-based learning model, based on systemic negotiations between actors from the three parties: The academy, the industry and the students. The purpose is to investigate how teachers, supervisors and students value negotiated work-based learning as a boundary activity and to enhance the understanding of the learning potential at the boundary.

    Design/methodology/approach

Activity theory is used as a lens to analyse the results from a survey to the three stakeholder groups and interviews of students. The four learning mechanisms are used to explore learning at the boundary between the two activity systems.

    Findings

Diversity and mobility in education and work addressed by the notion of boundary crossing are associated with both challenges and a learning potential. There is a constant dynamic between structure and agency, where structure, the negotiated model, influence the individual agency. When gradually removing scaffolding students can as boundary crossers engage behaviourally, emotionally, and cognitively and have agency to handle contradictions at a local level. However, they did not seem to prioritize both systems equally but instead they were gradually socialised into the activity system of the industry.

    Originality/value

When work-based learning is framed by a negotiated partnership it can manage and customize inherent conflicts of interest and enhance individual learning opportunities at the boundary and can be conceptualized as an open learning practice.

    Abstract [en]

Digital wallets have become a trendy topic, and a popular method of paying in physical stores. The aim of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of the attitude of Swedish consumers towards digital wallets Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. With the help of semi-structured interviews and previous research, users' attitudes could be more thoroughly established and the question asked for the study was answered. Factors that influence the user's attitude are based on previous research and theory. The factors that have been identified are usability, availability and security. With the help of the semi-structured interviews, it is possible to determine that most user's attitudes to the security of the services are poor. A poorer attitude to one or more factors will make the user's attitude to the whole of the services less favorable. The results also show that respondents feel some uncertainty when it comes to loss of account information.

    Abstract [en]

The rapid development of the cloud has contributed to a remarkable change within the IT industry. The outstanding functionality of using the cloud is the possibility to access data from a variety of sources regardless of its geographical location. Today different users around the world utilize the cloud, users from a broad range of businesses and backgrounds. However, there are also downsides to the cloud that might lead to severe negative consequences if not taken into consideration. This study identifies the security risks that could occur by using the cloud. These security risks have been identified and analyzed, in order to minimize them. Therefore, the aim of this study is to highlight the risks of using the cloud in order to minimize security risks and to achieve an increased security when using the cloud. The research question was answered using a scientific methodology based on the collection of qualitative data. The qualitative data was collected through interviews. More specifically, multiple interviewees from different suppliers in Sweden, all whom contributed with relevant information to this study. The result of this study shows that the amount of security risks is dependent on the supplier providing the cloud and the type of cloud infrastructure. Hence, the risks in the cloud could vary depending on which supplier that offers the service. Today it is almost impossible to eliminate the security risks that the cloud entails. However, this study shows that the potential to minimize these risks are found within the set agreement between supplier and customer, risks that both parties agree on are acceptable to the customer.

Work–integrated informal Learning (WiiL) Adopting Social Networking as Interdisciplinary Learning at Workplace2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Work Integrated Learning usually focuses on student's practical knowledge and learning duringthe education, while a student after completing the institutional period is still a student at workplace ass/he never stops learning. Learning within the organization is not only the formal training and educationof the employees, but also an informal process of sharing knowledge. The knowledge is often embedded in organizational activities, practices, and norms, as well as the social ties among the persons. The use of social networking site within the organization enables a new work integrated methodof learning and communication among the colleagues from different disciplines, encouraging both personal and professional informal knowledge sharing inside the organization. Our analysis ofemployee's behavior and acceptance of social networking as an informal way of learning was performed by a descriptive case survey research. The respondents providing the empirical data for survey consisted of 105 out of 180 targeted employees from a private IT organization in Pakistan. The questionnaire results present that the professionals use social networking sites to share their experiences and to build a virtual break in the hierarchical levels of the profession within the organization. Their motivation in using social networking includes sharing personal and professional experiences with co-workers and advancing their career. This paper illustrates the power of social networking as a Work Integrated Informal Learning (WIIL) tool that contributes significantly to increase the gain of interdisciplinary knowledge within the organization

    Abstract [en]

Learning within the organization is not only linked to the formal training and education of the employees, but also to informal processes of sharing knowledge. The knowledge is often embedded in organizational activities, practices and norms, as well as in social ties among individuals in the organization. We analyzed employees' behavior and acceptance of online social networking as an information system (IS) of learning. The analysis is performed by a descriptive case survey within a telecom corporation in Pakistan. The purpose of our study is to bring an informal learning system at workplace. In this study we obtain quantitative data from 105 out of 180 targeted employees. The results show that a majority of the studied employees favor social networking to connect colleagues at different levels and more than half of the respondents share their knowledge and experiences using social sites. Nearly half of the respondents strongly agree that knowledge sharing is an important role of social sites within the organization and many are in favor of social media as an informal learning system. The results also show how the professionals use social networking sites to share their experiences and to build a virtual break in hierarchical levels of professions. This paper illustrates the benefits of social networking sites as an informal work integrated learning tool that also serves as an IS model for the organization.

A qualitative content study of Social Orientation course.: A small case study of the Somalis’ perception and opinions of the Social Orientation course.2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is aimed to explore a qualitative study on participants’ experience of the Social Orientation course which is intended to facilitate the refugees that are new to Sweden in their integration, establishment in working and social life. According to UNHCR (2014) integration prepares refugees to adapt to their host societies without giving up their cultural identity. This study focuses on the newcomers’ experience and perception of the social orientation course Since they must participate in this course. Moreover, there has been little empirical research conducted on the participants’ experience in this subject area. the study will focus on two cities, Trollhättan and Falköping because of the availability of participants in these cities. In this regard, a qualitative case will be utilized, and data collection will be made by interviewing the participants. Furthermore, the theory which will be applied in this thesis is the acculturation theory to investigate how immigrants’ understandings and experiences reflect on the components or categories of the acculturation theory, integration, assimilation, and separation. The analysis and discussions presented in this study show that, due to a lack of educated instructors with pedagogical competencies, participants have experienced that they did not benefit anything from the course.

Reaching Out, Tuning in: On the Problematic Information Structure Hindering Connection between Socially Engaged Organizations and Refugees in the Municipality of Trollhättan2017In: Uddevalla Symposium 2017: Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Industrial Dynamics in Internationalized Regional Economies: Revised papers first presented at the 20th Uddevalla Symposium 15-17 June, 2017, Trollhättan, Sweden / [ed] Iréne Bernhard, Trollhättan: University West , 2017, p. 21-28Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The recent refugee crises have caused newcomers to settle in different municipalities in Sweden. Different municipalities respond differently to the situations that arise from an increased number of refugees waiting for decisions from the Swedish Migration Agency regarding residence permit. Such variation in response also affects how refugees can access relevant information about activities and initiatives available in the designated municipality while waiting. This study investigated how stakeholders' in the municipality of Trollhättan experienced their possibilities to spread information about their activities targeting refugees. A particular interest was on what kind of activities stakeholders provided, problems they face in reaching out to refugees, and opinions on using technology usage for outreach. Seven stakeholders in Trollhättan municipality were included in the study; a private company, the municipal employment office, a university and four nonprofit organizations. Findings suggest that stakeholders did arrange various types of initiatives but it was hard for refugees placed in Trollhättan to get access to these local initiatives. Stakeholders wanted to reach out to as many refugees as possible but they have a hard time doing so. The study concluded that information access of stakeholders activities is a major problem for refugees in Trollhättan. In order to address the dispersed and hard-to-find information from the varied stakeholders, a mobile app was suggested as a solution to the information problem in order to create a digital cental place for stakeholder initiatives and information spread. These initiatives, if known about, could create a more active and varied everyday life for refugees awaiting decisions from the migration board. For stakeholders to reach out with information of planned activities and for refugees to be able to tunein to these possibilities becomes particularly important in municipalities where refugees are dispersed in various kinds of locations, rather than living in largec amps.

Den digitala kompetensen inom äldreomsorgen: En kvalitativ studie ur vårdpersonalen perspektiv2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The digitalisation of health care contributes to increased efficiency and thus has the potential to meet society's growing care needs and demand. The digitalisation brings with it opportunities, but also challenges for healthcare staff, given that digitalisation means that they need digital skills. The competence of the staff is one of the most important aspects for a successful digitalisation in healthcare. When digitalisation was implemented in healthcare, the aspect of digital competence did not receive sufficient attention. Healthcare staff can develop a frustration with adopting new technology if they do not have the digital skills needed to manage the technology. Hence the research question: How do care staff in the elderly care experience the use of digital tools at work, and how do they themselves see challenges and needs in terms of digital competence in the workplace? The purpose is to gain an understanding of the care staff's digital competence in elderly care, by examining their experiences and attitudes to using digital tools, as well as what training they have received to carry out digital tasks. A qualitative study was conducted with semi-structured interviews to collect data. The interviews were conducted at two nursing homes and at one home care service. Ten people working in elderly care have participated in the study. When analyzing data a thematic analysis was performed. The main result that emerged in the study was that the current training for the digital tools is not sufficient. Based on their own experiences, the care staff believe that a more thorough and continuous education should be introduced. This is to give healthcare professionals the opportunity and resources to be able to develop digital competence. In summary, this study shows a need for updated knowledge and understanding of the purpose of digitalisation, which can contribute to increased confidence in IT and the digital competence of healthcare staff. In summary, the study creates an understanding of the healthcare staff's experience of digital tools, as well as the knowledge and training that the staff perceive as necessary to strengthen their digital competence. Furthermore, the care staff also feel that the digital tasks are mismanaged, and in order to minimize the shortcomings regarding digital competence and the use of digital tools, the care staff believe that a more thorough and continuous training is necessary.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how informatics- and economics students experience that their personal integrity is affected by personalized ads on Facebook. This study will present how data collection takes place, what rules exist when collecting data and how personalized ads can be possible to design. Furthermore, this study uses the SOR-modelas an analytical framework for the purpose of distinguishing different factors that affect the respondents' personal integrity. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted with fictitious advertisements as complement towards four informatics students and four economics students at University West. The interviews were recorded and transcribed with selective transcription to identify key quotes. These quotes have then been grouped according to data collection, personalized ads, privacy paradox and click intent. The results of this study show that the design of the ad has a major impact on how the privacy paradox is perceived. How this study's respondents perceive the privacy paradox of personalized ads is based on how confident the respondent feels towards the data collection that takes place.

    Abstract [en]

INTRODUCTION: Bacteraemia is a first stage for patients risking conditions such as septic shock. The primary aim of this study is to describe factors in the early chain of care in bacteraemia, factors associated with increased chance of survival during the subsequent 28days after admission to hospital. Furthermore, the long-term outcome was assessed.

METHODS: This study has a quantitative design based on data from Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and hospital records.

RESULTS: In all, 961 patients were included in the study. Of these patients, 13.5% died during the first 28days. The EMS was more frequently used by non-survivors. Among patients who used the EMS, the suspicion of sepsis already on scene was more frequent in survivors. Similarly, EMS personnel noted the ESS code "fever, infection" more frequently for survivors upon arriving on scene. The delay time from call to the EMS and admission to hospital until start of antibiotics was similar in survivors and non-survivors. The five-year mortality rate was 50.8%. Five-year mortality was 62.6% among those who used the EMS and 29.5% among those who did not (p<0.0001).

CONCLUSION: This study shows that among patients with bacteraemia who used the EMS, an early suspicion of sepsis or fever/infection was associated with improved early survival whereas the delay time from call to the EMS and admission to hospital until start of treatment with antibiotics was not. 50.8% of all patients were dead after five years.

    Abstract [en]

Although the work in home care businesses most often are mobile, the documentation and information management often occurs in information systems through desktop computers. The need for mobile solutions have become more relevant as they may contribute to increased safety, improved quality and time savings. However, research shows that business knowledge is often overlooked in the development of health systems, which contributes to IT support that are not adapted to the business needs. This study aims to increase understanding on how home care staff believes that mobile IT support the care work and organization routines.

The study was conducted in a home care business through qualitative interviews of six respondents and a thematic analysis model has been used, containing three theoretical areas: Efficiency, Ease of use and Usability, Satisfaction and Motivation. The results show that a mobile IT support would represent a clear advantage in the business and that the existing information system could either be supplemented or replaced. However, the staff still have fears and negative attitudes towards the obstacles and risks of what new technologies can bring to the table.

Kartläggning och automatisering av den interna varuförsörjningskedjan: en fallstudie på Lindex AB2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Implications of the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) certification at University West: An updated model for classifying pedagogical activities that promotes WIL2021In: VILÄR: 9-10 of December, 2021, University West, Trollhättan, Trollhättan: Högskolan Väst , 2021, p. 24-24Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

During the last year more programs went through the formal process of WIL-certification at University West. The programs included in this presentation are 3d-animation and visualization, Digital Media and Systems development – IT and society. An early step when preparing for the certification was to identify activities and pedagogical ideas, utilized by staff and considered to promote and achieve a WIL space. As the number of activities identified grew in number the need for a model or classification of work integrated education (WIE) became apparent. There are some possible classifications suggested but they were not covering all aspects and forms of the programs. At the end a modified or updated classification based on the work of Hedlund & Svensson (2005) became the solution

The aim for this presentation is to discuss identified forms of work integrated education (WIE) through examples from actual courses and a modified framework for classification.

    Abstract [en]

Health is a big area and something highly valued in people's lives. This is something that has been sought after throughout all times and has today been supported by smart watches and quantification. Today, smart watches are a fast-growing technology adapted to influence behavior. The market promises good results from these smart watches, and various research areas also express positive opinions about this phenomenon. The result from these quantitative measurements has been viewed as a central force in the process of behavior change, the impact of which has been explored in this study. This exploration of quantified measurements is seen as the first goal in this study. There are surrounding factors related to the smart watches that can contribute to behavior change. Exploring these surrounding factors in relation to measurements from smart watches was the second objective of the study. The study used previous research as well as semi-structured interviews to fulfill its purpose. Theoretically, smart watches can measure any unit. This study was therefore limited to only heart rate, steps, and sleep sensing. The conclusion shows that heart rate but mainly step counters has a significant effect on the behavior change process. The social factor, new technology, investment, and flexibility were identified as surrounding factors but have no significant effect on the behavior change process.

Rethinking Competence: On Performing Digital Transformation2021Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

With increasing incorporation of digital technologies at work, a growing concern has been with the competence of the workforce. To capture the importance of competence in relation to digital technologies, Information Systems has traditionally employed the concept of “IT competence”. In recent years, the more contemporary concept of “digital competence” has made its way into Information Systems. However, regardless of whether these concepts refer to distinct sociotechnical phenomena, it can be said that they provide similar contributions and limitations. As a result, the focus in both the “IT competence” and “digital competence” literature has been primarily limited to the individual’s abilities to use specific IT artifacts to perform certain work tasks. These limitations have bounded our concept of how the incorporation of today’s digital technologies transforms entire work relations and therefore the plausible ways in which the workforce can adapt to these changes. By revisiting the theoretical value of these concepts through a Neo-Sociotechnical Systems approach, my research aim has been to provide an enhanced understanding of a) the implications of the digital transformation of work for competence, and b) digital competence as a theoretical concept that accommodates those implications. The dissertation provides a revised understanding of “digital competence” through a longitudinal and ethnographic study of two digitally transforming professions, i.e., communications and automotive engineering.

As firms incorporate digital technologies into established product categories, they need to manage tensions on multiple organizational layers including strategy, technology and structure. Recent findings suggest that tensions are most likely to be managed by creating resource and coordination flexibility. This paper reports a longitudinal case study of developing a digital product platform. By drawing on organizational ambidexterity theory, we identify four mechanisms—re-scripting, centralizing-re-directing and decoupling—through which the firm creates resource and coordination flexibility. The resulting resource and coordination flexibility in turn lead to the transformation of the firm’s strategy, technology and internal structure. The contribution of this study is in adopting an internal perspective and a bottom-up approach which help to theorize the evolution of digitized products into digital product platforms in an emergent way.

Conceptualizing industrial workplace learning: an information systems perspective2022In: Journal of Workplace Learning, ISSN 1366-5626, E-ISSN 1758-7859, Vol. 35, no 9, p. 1-21Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify the constituent parts of learning in the manufacturing work context and understand why these parts are key in the learning of the employees. Design/methodology/approach: The data was collected from two sources: a literature review of the Information Systems literature to establish an initial picture of what learning in relation to digital technologies entails and in-depth interviews with engineers in the automotive industry whose knowledge-intensive work is exposed to substantial digital transformation. Findings: The authors first identified three constituent parts for learning: change, reflection and deliberation. When the authors cross-checked the initial findings through in-depth interviews with the engineers, it was found that these three themes trigger learning through three different mechanisms, that is, balancing newness, finding point of reference and organizing actively. Thus, the findings of this paper extend beyond a categorical identification of what constitutes learning to also illustrate why learning entails these constituent parts. Research limitations/implications: This paper implies that progressive learning requires active organizing of learning stages. The data is limited to the review of the Information Systems field. The authors have also only focused on the automotive industry as the representative sector in the manufacturing industry. Practical implications: Applying the model of progressive learning can be a primary way to actively plan and organize learning opportunities for employees. This is key for supporting learning culture in organizations that are exposed to continuous and disruptive changes. Social implications: A significant part of social sustainability is based on sustainable employability and feelings of contentment at work. This paper is an attempt to highlight how sustainable employability can be achieved by providing effective learning opportunities at work. Originality/value: The originality of this paper emerges from two sources. First, the authors conducted the literature review and in-depth interviews by devising innovative methods because of the challenges of identifying when (informal) learning has occurred at work. Second, the authors owe the in-depth interviews to the first author’s extensive familiarity with the automotive industry and the knowledge and rapport acquired through her prior longitudinal research on the engineers’ work. It was this background that allowed the authors to find out when these engineers were about to leave the firm because of discontent about their competence development.

What competence is not2019In: VILÄR 5-6 december 2019, University West, Trollhättan: Abstracts / [ed] Kristina Johansson, Trollhättan: University West , 2019, p. -3Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The ambitions of organizational scholarship to enhance employee's performance is viewed as a process of moving from controlling workers to empowering them, from giving orders to creating participatory interactions. These movements are usually pursued in the shadow of a supposed scientific management exactness that aim for a higher performance. However, such ambitions often ultimately translate into organizational efficiency in the sense of less input for more output in performing certain tasks, or in terms of creating customer value. In this scenario, no matter how capable employees are in performing a range of tasks related to a knowledge area, their performance is always evaluated relative to tasks specific to the context of the given organization and dependent upon its demands.

In this study, we examine a highly innovative industrial context, where the arrangement of human competence, and modern agile management processes are implemented with hopes of employee empowerment. Through in-depth interviews, we illustrate how the engineers' presumptions for individual competence development are often at odds with the requirements of performing in the context of their organization. This is while, the agile management processes have famously accommodated the engineers with high levels of freedom to engage in their personal interest areas and to continue learning in that direction. Towards the end, we argue that, although closely entangled, employees' 'competence' and 'performance' refer to distinct grounds.By distinguishing the two terminologies, we aim at voicing both the employees' concerns with developing their competence, as well as the managerial consideration to obtain "competent" performance. Our study contributes to both the management literature on competence at work, as well as studies of workplace learning.

Organizing in the age of digital product platforms: The work of integrated vehicle control engineers2019In: CEUR Workshop Proceedings, E-ISSN 1613-0073, Vol. 2398, p. 17-25Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As flexibility and generativity of digitized information continuously afford new possibilities, a significant challenge for organizations becomes pinpointing practices that are befitting from various aspects. Two overarching digitization eras have so far determined the greatness of the challenge for organizations; 'computerization', and 'the Internet'. Today, a third era of digitization is marked by the emergence of digitized products. As increasing numbers of code line and software are being incorporated in previously physical products such as cars, they can be used as complete products on one layer, and simultaneously turn into platforms enabling other firms to develop and integrate new components, content, or services on another layer. As digital product platform's multiple design layers need to be open to various applications and agendas, their development requires new justifications and approaches for organizing work. By applying a Neo Socio-Technical Systems frame of reference on the work of engineers as they engage in developing digitized products, we 1. discuss changes of work and organizing along three eras of digitization, 2. provide a rich empirical instance by identifying what steps engineers take in preparation for developing digital product platforms, and 3. discuss the implications of these steps for the literature on practice and organizing. ©Copyright held by the author(s).

    Abstract [en]

As flexibility and generativity of digitized information continuously afford new possibilities, a significant challenge for organizations becomes pinpointing forms and kinds of practice that are befitting from various aspects. Two overarching digitization eras have so far determined the greatness of the challenge for organizations; ‘computerization’, and ‘the Internet’. Today, a third era of digitization is marked by the emergence of digitized products. As an increasing number of code lines and software are being incorporated in previously physical products such as cars, they can be used as complete products on one layer, and simultaneously turn into platforms enabling other firms to develop and integrate new components, content, or services on another layer. As digital product platform’s multiple design layers need to be open to various applications and agendas, their development requires new justifications and approaches for organizing work. By looking into the characteristics of digital product platforms, we discuss the shifts in the work of engineers as they engage in developing digitized products along three main courses of action. We illustrate how these courses of action are formed based on the requirements of developing digital product platforms rather than managerial presuppositions

Conceptualizing Competence: A Study On Digitalization Of Work Practices2020In: Proceedings of the 28th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS), 2020, article id 197Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Competence development at work has since long been a core managerial challenge and a topic that has received a steady research interest. In academia, the topic has been explored in what we see as two scholarly traditions: 1) the earlier scholarship on ‘competence’ where discussions of technology have largely been absent, and 2) the later scholarship on ‘digital competence’ where the focus has been on the individual’s abilities to use particular Information Technology (IT) artifacts. With the increased sophistication of digitalization in today’s society, we suggest—while attending to digitalization—competence scholarship needs to go beyond the study of individuals’ ability to use particular IT artifacts. One way to do so is to investigate how digitalization transforms work conditions, and how individuals respond to these shifts. In this study, we focus on the role of today’s cyber-infrastructural technology, such as social media, in re-writing work conditions. By examining, through in-depth interviews, how the work of communication practitioners is digitalized, we 1) extend the conceptualization of digital competence beyond the customary IT competence, and 2) suggest two levels of competence based on two empirically grounded conceptualizations; competence as the optimization of existing resources, and competence as the envisioning of new possibilities.

Transformation Of Competence: The Effects Of Digitalization Oncommunicators' Work2017In: Proceedings of the 25th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS),: ECIS 2017 Proceedings, 2017, p. 195-209Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Studying human competence in relation with digitalization is currently an under-researched area within information systems scholarship. This paper presents a response to the contemporary calls within the IS field for studying the changes brought on by the advent of digitalization. Based on indepth interviews with professional communicators, we illustrate the effects of digitalization on the formation of work related competences. Employing a new sociotechnical system approach (Neo-STS), we analyze and illustrate the effects of digitalization in multiple ways. First, we propose that any further study of competence cannot be inadvertent to the phenomenon of digitalization. Second, we suggest a new approach for studying competence in relation with digitalization as opposed to studying "digital competence". Third, by applying a Neo-STS perspective, we provide a substantiated explanation of the transformation of competences in the work of communicators.

Dags att köra agilt!: vilka är de främsta för- och nackdelarna med att använda en agil systemutvecklingsmetod?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Vegan lifestile on Facebook: An online ethnography study2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of vegans in the world. The main goal of my research is to understand the vegan struggles in their daily life and study how Facebook might help them solve these difficulties. This master's thesis focuses on the user perspective and how they perceive barriers to follow a vegetarian lifestyle in Spain. The research questions are about finding those barriers and knowing how they could be solved by using Facebook groups. For this purpose, an ethnographic approach has been used.

The target group of this study are vegans who have gone through the time of change and may have had some problems in making that decision. Fifteen vegans have been interviewed to find challenges that have arisen when they have changed their lifestyles. After that, an online ethnography study has been performed by observing the content of a Facebook group, called "Vegetarianos y Veganos – España", focusing on publications where group members were asking for advice, information or solutions.

The results indicate that the investigated group of Facebook is essential for the exchange of information, knowledge and experience. The members also contribute to increased knowledge through publications and comments. But most importantly, the members receive solutions to the problems they share with the group.

The State of Open Educational Resources (Oer) in Swedish Higher Education: A Case Study2023In: INTED 2023 Proceedings: 7th International Technology, Education and Development Conference, Valencia, Spain. 6-8 March, 2023, International Association for Technology, Education and Development, 2023, p. 4908-4917Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Open Educational Resources are learning, teaching, and research materials in any format and medium that reside in the public domain or are under copyright that have been released under an open license, that permit no-cost access, re-use, re-purpose, adaptation, and redistribution by others (UNESCO). Increasing the use of OER worldwide can be one of many steps toward reaching the United Nations Agenda 2030 sustainability goals (SDG), especially SDG 4 Quality Education, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The UNESCO OER recommendations from 2020 provide clear goals and aims for OER, but how are they being implemented in higher education in Sweden? Specifically, how well are teachers and students aware of and how are they using OER, specifically open textbooks? This paper presents the use and needs of OER as well as current OER guidelines at University West in Sweden and investigates teachers’ and students' perceptions and experiences of open educational resources (OER) at University West, focusing on open textbooks. The method of the intervention was student and teacher surveys, both pre- and post-pandemic. The pre-pandemic surveys were sent out in April 2020 and had 79 student respondents and 82 teacher respondents. The post-pandemic surveys were sent out in June 2022 and had 83 student respondents and 76 teacher respondents.

The aggregated results show that there were no significant differences in the use of OER and open textbooks due to the pandemic both for students and teachers. The current use of OER and open textbooks was limited and the primary motivations for using OER and open textbooks were economy, social justice, and adaptability with varying priorities among students and teachers. Additionally, OER and open textbooks are currently used marginally at University West but there is interest to increase the use of OER and student co-creation due to the three primary motivators. These preliminary results provide valuable insights regarding the key factors for increasing the use of OER and open textbooks in higher education to help achieve the UNESCO OER 2020 goals and the United Nations Agenda 2030 SDG goals, especially SDG 4 Quality Education.

Att utveckla Lysekils centrum tillsammans: utmaningar och möjligheter2018Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Lessons Learned From A Cross-Sector Development Project: An Integrative Research Approach2018In: INTED 2018: Proceedings / [ed] L. Gómez Chova, A. López Martínez, I. Candel Torres, 2018, p. 3914-3922Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper draws on the experiences of work-integrated learning from a Swedish-Norwegian cross-sector research project where actors from university, industry, government and volunteer sector collaborate on city center development. The empirical setting of the present study consists of six smaller cities in rural municipalities with limited resources and experiences of collaboration with higher education institutions. The following research question is addressed: How can research and development projects serve as a vehicle for facilitating mutual knowledge exchange between academia and society in cross-sector and rural collaboration contexts? The aim is hence to suggest a tentative collaboration model that identify and integrate knowledge flows between actors involved in cross-sector collaborations in such setting. To gain deep insights in the complex dynamics of project collaboration we applied a mixed methods approach including surveys, structured, in-depth qualitative interviews, observations, workshops and student projects. The data collection was performed during 2016-2017. Findings indicate that trust, continuity, and relationship building are the basis vital for successful creation, development and maintenance of knowledge flows. Furthermore, there is a need to develop an integrative tool box with different methodological tools, work practices and strategies to plan, perform, compile to leverage the knowledge flows and coproduce sustainable results. Our tentative model aims to illustrate conceptualize lessons learned on work-integrated learning and collaboration with academia. We discuss how the model may support co-creative and mutual results over time.
