Att uppleva sin religion på nytt: En kvalitativ studie om ensamkommande barns upplevelser och förhållningssätt till religion i Sverige2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to describe how school staff and social workers identify and prevent truancy in the Swedish compulsory school. The study explores the school workers professional experiances of the underlying causes of truancy and what measures are taken in collaboration with social authorities to prevent pupils´ absence from school. The study is based on current international and national research and takes into account policy documents, legal texts and general advice issued by the Swedish National Agency for Education and the National board of Health and Welfare. The theoretical perspective used in of the analyses are the terms inclusion and exclusion. Qualitative semi-structured lifeworld interviews with five professional categories (a school head master, a councelor, a  teacher and two social workers) working in school were performed. The interviews focused on causes of truancy and collaborative work involving both school professionals and social workers. The interviews were recorded and subsequently transcribed and analysed. The analysis was performed thematically, causes of truancy and collaborative work to prevent truancy. The interpretation of the data was based on consensus and differences in the responses. As can be seen from the discussion, the primary cause of truancy is related to the pupil´s home situation. Research shows that school can be a protective factor to prevent exclusion. In cases where truancy is related to the school situation it is principally a result of group pressure from other pupils. All respondents in the interviews stated that they have an awareness of where pupils with extensive absenteeism are in relation to the school´s work model to prevent truancy. Collaborative work is a success factor to reduce truancy.

"... leksakslådorna har aldrig blivit bortplockade!": Gemenskap mellan generationer – förutsättningar för ett gott åldrande2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Opportunities to participate are seen by many as a keystone of a good life and a well functioning society. Participation by children has primarily been equated with the perception that children should have a ‘voice’, while participation in the sense of interactivity, being part of and doing things and taking on responsibility for others, has been omitted. In the thesis, it is argued that the emphasis on children having a voice is based in an individually oriented manner that may not be applicable to all children. For children living in societies that are more collectively oriented, participation may not primarily be about making decisions on their own or being able to speak for themselves. Rather participation can encompass doing things together and making decisions in a reciprocal way in which the individual is not at the centre. By broadening the concept of participation to include both decision-making processes and activities in the family, the thesis aims to explore how children from different parts of the world perceive their participation and what contextual factors might affect how children’s participation is expressed. Data are collected within the frame of the international research project Parenting Across Cultures (PAC) and consists of structured interviews with children and background data retrieved from their parents. Interviews were conducted with a sample of 1290 children (age M = 10.37, SD = 0.72; 51% girls) from thirteen cultural groups in nine countries (China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand and the United States). The analysis process has included frequency analysis, factor analysis, multilevel analysis and bivariate analyses. The results indicate that the two forms of participation are not mutually exclusive. On the contrary, for most children they are positively linked: the more children participate in activities, the more they take part in decision-making and vice versa. Results also show that variations in participation are not mainly dependent on the cultural group or country to which the children belong. Instead, overall and individual socioeconomic conditions both appear to be decisive to the way participation is expressed. The more children’s rights are realized and the safer children feel where they live, the more children perceive they participate in both decision-making and activities. At an individual level, however, the results indicate that if children live in hard socioeconomic circumstances in their families, there is a risk they will participate mainly in activities and lack influence in decision-making. It is suggested that there are four possible participation positions for children in the family, with the different forms of participation being more or less prominent. Social workers are therefore recommended not to convey a one-sided discourse on participation based on a particular childhood ideology that emphasizes either the children’s individual rights or their mutual obligations. When children of different backgrounds and traditions meet social work, keeping both aspects of participation in the air at the same time can be a more passable way to fulfil children’s rights in their families. The result also has implications for structural social work. One of the main findings is that children’s feelings of safety where they live are clearly positively linked to participation in both decision-making and activities. Social work aimed at creating safe neighbourhoods can therefore be a key factor for children’s participation, not only for increased involvement in the area in which they live but also for giving children greater opportunities to have a say and engage in activities in their families.

Socialt arbete inom utbildningens diskurs: En kvalitativ studie av skolkuratorers syn på normkritiskt arbete2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The school’s primary task is education, but it also have a legal obligation to work against discrimination, violations and harassment, a task that is usually imposed on the school counselor. Based on the area of interest regarding how the social work gets space and authority when it is placed within another profession’s domain, the purpose of the study is to investigate how school counselors perceive the school’s norm-critical work and how they work to counteract the negative effects of gender-norms. The study’s empirical material has been developed through qualitative method in forms of semi-structured interviews with three school counselors. The data was analyzed by ”sentence-concentration” and was interpreted through contributions from Bronfenbrenner’s human development theory and Foucalt’s discourse theory. The result shows that the norm-critical work is considered to imbue everyday life and mainly exists through the establishment of a “equal treatment plan”. The school counselor bears a great responsibility in running a norm-critical work but lacks authority in the professional role as a result of the secondary position. The result also shows that the knowledge of gender norms and how the individual is affected by these is insufficient in school which constitutes an obstruction for the norm-critical work.

Socialpedagogers attityder till att söka socialsekreterartjänster: Vilken betydelse har media?2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

"Identitet Skapas I Möten Med Andra": Segregation och identitetsskapande2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the high school girls' own thoughts and experiences of how they present themselves on various social media and how their identity is influenced by the constantly connection to social media. A qualitative approach has been used in which focus group interviews with six high school girls has been conducted. The theories that has been used in the study is based on Anthony Giddens' perspectives on identity and late modernity, Thomas Ziehe's thoughts on youth and society, Erving Goffman's dramaturgical approach and Judith Butler's and Frih and Söderberg's gender perspective. Theory has been supplemented with current research related the selected field.

The result shows that the use of social media has a big impact on and importance to the girls' identity construction. They spend many hours each day on various social media to keep in touch with friends, see what other users are doing and share their own content in the form of photos, videos and status updates. With the publication of photographs mainly pursued by the girls to get as many likes as possible. The growing use of social media has meant that hate online has grown larger since anonymity is allowed on certain sites.

The result shows that there is a difference between how boys and girls use the internet and social media, since boys in a greater extent than girls are playing games and search for information while girls more often use it to maintain social relationships. According to the result the publication of airbrushed images are somewhat accepted but that the images should be consistent with the appearance offline

    Abstract [en]

We are fighting for something; we are soldiers of the suburb. It's a reoccurring phenomenon that the young people in the suburbs around Sweden and around the world starts riots and for different reasons it creates a reaction where they go to attack against the police. The purpose of this essay is to uplift and take a part of the voice of the youth from Kronogården, and furthermore get a deeper understanding of the experience that the young people got from law enforcement both during and after the riots on the 31/8 – 2/9 2016. As a demarcation we have chosen to focus on the youth living in Kronogården that have participated or were present during the riots. This study was conducted in Hermeneuticphenomenological research approach with qualitative interviews. The ground of the study is emphasizing the interviews from 6 young persons from the ages 16-24. The essay is analyzed with help from previous researched and relevant theoretic notions. The notions we use in this essay are power, social cohesion and stigma, so that we can get a deeper understanding and accurate interpretations of the young people's experiences. In the result it appears that the youth feel harassed and unfairly treated by the police in comparison to other young people living in other neighborhood's and that their action against the police is actually a reaction to the treatment from law enforcement. Their way of expressing a discontent and frustration and a way to get heard. It also appears to be several different perceptions about the police and their conduct, depending if it's the community police or an outside law enforcement. Furthermore it also show that the community Kronogården has an enormous impact both emotional and physical on the people, they have sense of belonging and a very strong cohesion between the residents and they feel that media is a huge contribution to the negative interpretation of both the young people that live there and of the community as a whole.

Ten theses on why we need a social science panel on climate change2013In: ACME: An International E-Journal for Critical Geographies, ISSN 1492-9732, E-ISSN 1492-9732, Vol. 12, no 1, p. 155-176Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article discusses climate change from a critical social science perspective. Firstly, it is argued that climate change is not, in a fundamental sense, possible to understand from a natural science perspective, but demands an analysis of political power relations and our existing global political economy, capitalism. Therefore, climate change involves questions of global justice. Secondly, it is argued that the contemporary world economy, not only forcefully restructures climate, but also our societies, creating turbulent social strains, and therefore also an emerging global political reaction, one that is potentially giving hope for a solution, transnational justice and climate movements. However, thirdly, it is argued that these movements are not enough since they are still too ineffective to really challenge the basic injustices of global capitalism or its climate change effects. Social change is urgent, while solutions, strategies and mobilizations still seem too weak. Therefore, fourthly and lastly, we need a new kind of climate change panel, one that combines the theoretical-analytical skills of critical social scientists and the practical knowledge and organizational skills of movement intellectuals. A "Social Science Panel on Climate Change" is suggested in order to develop effective and realistic options and strategies.

Some ethnic Swedish students’ discourses on religion: secularism par excellence2016In: Journal of Religious Education, ISSN 1442-018X, E-ISSN 2199-4625, Vol. 64, no 2, p. 113-125Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Having been almost abandoned during the latter part of the 1900s, religion and youth is currently a growing field of research in Europe. Since people thought that secularisation would eradicate religion as a phenomenon, there was obviously no major reason to investigate young people’s attitudes towards religion. Since that time, the understanding of the world and its complex relationship with religion has changed, and this now attracts much discussion. In Europe, this not only concerns religion and youth among different migrant groups, but also research on religion and youth of those born and raised in Europe itself and integrated into the historic majority. The aim of this paper is to revisit and reanalyse the results of two qualitative research projects based on interviews with young students in schools who identify themselves as Swedish. I analyze their discursive constructions on their own religion and the religions of ‘others’. The data point towards a strong secularist discourse, where the Swedish students identify themselves as having a modern and rational worldview. On the other hand, they regard religion and religious people as old-fashioned and irrational. The focus in this article concerns articulations constructing this overarching secularist discourse, which I discuss in light of the contemporary debate on secularisation and secularism. However, most of the young students in the research appreciated the subject of Religious Education in Sweden as a means towards understanding the world. This was especially so in discussions on Religious Education with upper secondary school students, whereas younger students found religion to be more boring and traditional; thus the subject having difficulties in relating to the younger students’ experiences.

Young students memory and reflections on the 22/7 terror attacks in Norway2016In: Nordic Youth Research Symposium: Youth Moves – Voices – Spaces – Subjectivities, Trollhättan: Högskolan Väst , 2016, p. 137-137Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Young students memory and reflections on the 22/7 terror attacks in Norway Right before the critical events in Oslo and on Utøya in Norway 22/7, 2011, Anders Behring Breivik electronically distributed a compendium comprising his far-right militant ideology encompassing Islamophobia, support for far-right Zionism and opposition to multiculturalism and feminism. The text can be found on the Internet, as well as thousands of others texts profiling the same right-wing ideology. Hence some researchers talk about the dark Internet . This paper discusses findings based on focus-groups interviews with young people (age 18-23) in Sweden, Norway and Finland. Focus of the interviews are on the remembrance of the terror attacks, but also with a special focus on the young peoples knowledge and possible reactions when confronting messages like those AndersB Breivik expressed. Where do young people meet such messages and how do they react when meeting them? Moreover, do the young people remember teaching and discussions in school concerning the terror attacks in Norway, Islamophobia and right-wing contemporary ideologies? This research will have implications for understanding young peoples reflections on the use of the Internet and on education in a broad sense concerning right wing ideologies.

Transnationella relationer ur HVB-personalens perspektiv: Hur dessa inverkar på integrationsarbetet med ensamkommande barn2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how immigrant women perceive their social integration and participation in Swedish society and how their participation in club activities have affected this. We have made a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews. We chose to interview six immigrant women from different backgrounds and different lengths of stay in Sweden all participating in the same compound. To participate in this compound you have to be a woman over 18 years and the purpose with this compound is to strengthen both the women themselves and their societal participation. In order to get answers to our questions, we have used three different concepts; Social inclusion, integration and ethnicity as well as a gender perspective. We have also made use of previous research and facts to get a broader understanding of immigrant women. Our empirical basis we have taken through individual interviews, talks with President of the Association, and study visits on several occasions to get business insight.

The study concludes that there are various factors that affect the integration and social inclusion of migrant women, which is; language, residential area, gender and age. The study also shows that union participation is positive when it comes to strengthening social inclusion and integration.

    Abstract [en]

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, CRPD, is the principle of accessibility in the physical, communicative and informative environment of society for people with disabilities. As a person with disabilities you should have the same opportunity to participate in all the different arenas of society. One of these arenas marks the labor market, where the Swedish political intention is a labor market open to all, regardless of their ability to function. One step in promoting entry into the labor market for young adults with disabilities is the Swedish Social Insurance Benefit Disability benefits due to reduced work capability. Evidence shows that young adults with disability benefits are an exposed social group with lower disposable income than the rest of the population, the risk of ill health and exclusion from the labor market, thus endangering life-long poverty.        The aim of the study is to illustrate and bring about the young adults' own voices about their experiences of living with disability benefits as main source of income. The method used is a narrative method with social constructionist ideals. Central concepts according to the purpose of the study are participation, agency and social recognition.  The results show that young adults experience different levels of participation in society, depending on the availability of social arenas such as economic conditions, employment and communicative and informative accessibility. The limited disposable economy leads to difficulties in living on equal terms and participate as equals in society.

    Abstract [sv]

What are the factors that could influence an individual’s attitudes towards computers and

Internet? Our study tries to give some possible answers to this question. The aim of this

study was to see if there were any connections between the individual’s degree of usage

of computers/Internet and attitudes towards the same. Furthermore we wanted to examine

if there were any differences between men and women’s attitudes towards computers and

the Internet as well as if there were any differences in their degree of usage. We also

wanted to examine if there were any differences between individual’s from different

socio-economic backgrounds regarding their attitudes. The study included 270 members

of a non-governmental organisation. The results showed a connection between an

individual’s attitudes toward computers/Internet and degree of usage. We also found a

connection between socio-economic background and his or her attitudes toward

computers. We did not however find any differences between men and women’s attitudes

and degree of usage of computers and the Internet.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to exam how two environmental organizations reason about the loss of biodiversity. The research questions are; what is the view in these organizations regarding biodiversity? What are the underlying environmental discourses behind their reasoning, and how do they reason about the risks associated with the loss of biodiversity? As a first part of this thesis a thorough review of existing literature and online resources about the actions of environmental organizations was conducted. Two organizations were interviewed, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Naturskyddsforeningen. The questions for the study were analyzed in light of Dryzek´s (1997) reasoning about environmental discourses and using the concept of risk by Beck (1998). The results show that the environmental discourses reveal how organizations relate to the environment. WWF and Naturskyddsföreningen are working to change people's attitudes towards nature. The most dominant view in society is, however, that technology will solve environmental problems. Environmental organizations want's a structural change in the society, in regards to exploitation of natural resources rather than technical solutions, as they believe the problem is caused by people in general believe that they are superiority to nature. Furthermore, the results show how the organizations reason about the loss of biodiversity and the human role in this. The organizations want to prevent man's superiority of and sovereignty over nature by showing nature's intrinsic value, but they also want to highlight nature's benefits for human's to get more people engaged in environmental issues.

Marginaliserade aktörers inverkan på reglering och styrning av Internet : World Summit on the Information Society:s bidrag till nätets diskurs2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since the Net's humble beginning, Internet regulation and governance has been characterized by a West-centric and techno-meritocratic discourse which, in many ways, has led to the exclusion of major parts of the world from active participation in building the Information Society. In the prevailing order the United States has a privileged position through its indirect control over the Internet‘s strategic resources, i.e. IP-addresses and "root" in the Domain Name System, via a contractual arrangement between the "Department of Commerce" and the organization "Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers" (ICANN). There was furthermore a latent conflict between the United States and Internet community, on the one hand, and the United Nations and its member states, on the other hand, in so far as that the institutional order rested on principles of U.S. civil law instead of international treaties, one of the foundations of the geopolitical system. Hence two conferences in Geneva 2003 and Tunis 2005, as two phases of the "World Summit on the Information Society" (WSIS), were organised by the U.N. to raise topics concerning an internationally legitimate regime for Internet governance and the unequal distribution of information- and communications technology (ICT) between rich industrialized nations and poor developing ones. The aim of this study is to investigate whether WSIS managed in its objective of providing marginalized players, primarily the U.N. system and developing nations, structural influence in Internet governance and adding dimensions of digital solidarity and internationalization to a discourse that historically has been dominated by the West, in particular the U.S. Through the prism of Michel Foucault's concepts of power, the final documents from the WSIS process are scrutinized for discursive shifts that could be indicative of actual changes in power structures to the advantage of marginalized players. Discursive shifts, as those detected in the documents, are primarily related to the notion of the "digital divide" and raising awareness for the need of development and foreign aid policies within the context of the "Discourse of the Net" (ICT for development). On the other hand, it would seem that the procedures of exclusion in the formation of discourse have eliminated important aspects of Internet regulation and governance. Subsequently, it can be inferred that powerful players have worked behind the scenes to maintain the current structures of Internet governance. In those passages, where the subject is explicitly mentioned, there are clear references to maintaining the existing status quo. The WSIS process failed consequently in its ambition to increase the influence of marginalized players in this regard.

Hur flickors och kvinnors liv påverkas av att leva med ADHD: En litteraturöversikt2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

ADHD is a modern diagnosis and was first used in the 1980's. At first, ADHD was associated with active boys and the belief that as adults they should grew out of it. Today we know otherwise. People will not grow out of ADHD and girls can get the diagnoses as well. However, the existing diagnostic tools are adapted for boys. This makes the diagnosis of girls difficult to do because girls ADHD symptoms differ from the symptom of boys with ADHD. Due to this, wrong diagnosis of girls with ADHD is often done and as a result, Girls are not feeling well. It can even be so that they don't get a diagnosis at all.

    Aim:

The purpose of the study is to highlight girls' and women's experiences of living with ADHD. Method: A literature review based on eight articles was performed. Both qualitative and quantitative articles have been analyzed. Five themes were selected and presented in the results. Results: The importance of getting a diagnosis was significant to better handle problems that may occur in life. An ADHD diagnosis affected there self-image in a negative way. How other people approach and respond to an ADHD girl was crucial for how they saw themselves. ADHD led to a feeling of exclusion and also contributed to problems with relationships and difficulties to function in school and at work. Conclusion: Knowledge and information about the diagnosis was essential for how people with ADHD manage to cope with their life situation. Resources are a shortage in society today and there is a need to educate people in several areas. This is needed to create an understanding for the individuals and by doing so, decrease the risk of stigma. The understanding and knowledge will also create better conditions for girls and women with ADHD and contributes to their ability to better handle their problems as well as the feeling of having a good life.

    Learning integration-work through transnational digitalized courses2017In: INTED2017 Proceedings, 2017, p. 8018-8018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In both political discussions and integration assessments questions are often raised about social services role in inclusion for people of foreign descent. Such questions are highly relevant in a contemporary society that is characterized by growing social and cultural differentiation. The overall aim of this presentation is to contribute to our understanding of how knowledge about integration work is developed by students who takes part in a webbased, transnational course where they use digital learning platforms for communication, coordination and organisation of learning activities. Analytically, such a focus is pursued employing a socio-cultural perspective on learning where practical actions and the design of the course have been scrutinized. The motive for introducing a webbased transnational course in the area of integration was that there were an increasing amount of refugees migrating to Europe. Integration became a part of everyday work for a lot of professions, teachers, nurses and more. However, working with integration was not something that their professional education supported but they all expressed a need for more knowledge. But integration workers are assumed to have specific knowledge that is necessary to realize their work tasks. In the work with creating an integration-course one conclusion was that all welfare work is generic, which means we cannot only look at the content of the work, instead one must put it into more multifaceted perspective that includes several professionals knowledge domains, service-organization assignment, legislations and cultures related. Simultaneously, another university had the same ideas, which resulted in a transnational webbased course with students from different professional fields. All students, as well as the teachers, where interviewed in the beginning and in the end of the course about their expectations about the content and the form. The results demonstrate that using learning platforms to make sense in transnational education settings presupposes extensive knowledge of the indexicality of categories and concepts, something that could be assumed if the participants' had a shared professional history. Instead, as the students have different backgrounds the teachers have to account for the local hermeneutics needed, and for the knowledge embedded in information and categories. It is in the process of reliving, creating and exposing the meaning of information, that students and teachers actually bring information in education to life. In further development of transnational webbased courses it is important to not see this development as solely technical or organizational questions. To develop courses that increase the possibilities for students in different faculties with different routines etc. to make sense of information may be a much more demanding task than it seems to be. Such boundary-crossing teaching are nevertheless of great importance for the development of integration work as well as pedagogical competence in higher education.

The cultural brokering power of social pedagogy in education for Roma students2019In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, Vol. 9, no 1, p. 5-17Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Throughout history, people have concerned themselves with how people can live and work together in an inclusive society that encourages cooperative and productive bonds. This question is highly relevant in contemporary society that is characterized by growing migration and social differentiation. One, maybe obvious, solution is to provide people the opportunity to participate in education, creating conditions for a more inclusive society. In that context, questions are often raised about the relation between education and integration of immigrants. Social pedagogy aims to combine educational and social interventions. This study takes place at a school for adult Roma students and the aim is to identify and explain social pedagogical strategies with respect to inclusion processes. The results show how theoretical foundations of social pedagogy works as a €˜facilitator€™ and guide the teachers’ actions. By taking cultural belonging into account, shed light on issues relating to learning processes as well as mobilization and inclusion.

Ett levande bevis på att detta fungerar: En kvalitativ studie om psykisk ohälsa och återhämtning2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore how sports journalism can include and/or exclude athletics from a national community. This study put emphasis on finding patterns from articles by Swedish sport media on non-ethnic Swedish athletics. The theories central to this study are ethnicity and nationalism, as these concepts contain reflections on why certain groups of people are excluded and/or included. Norman Faircloghs critical discourse analytical model has been selected for the study method that analyzes texts in three levels: the text level, discursive practice and social practice. Four non-ethnic Swedish athletes have been chosen to explore how they were portrayed in the media. Data were collected from Swedish newspapers, sport websites and blogs that portrayed the selected athletes. Discourses of media, nationalism and ethnicity emerged through a critical analysis of the data collection. The results of the study show that the selected athletes are included in to the Swedish national community through their achievements in their respective sport.

Perceived resource scarcity and environmental behaviors – how do they relate?2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Sustainability challenges largely have to do with valuing past, present and future resources. History is full of examples of humans and societies that threat, react to changes in, and preserve resources they depend on. However, there is surprisingly little research on attitudal or behavioral reactions to decreasing or increasing resource levels in the fieldof environmental studies. This study aims to investigate the impact of individual experience-based subjective evaluations of different types of resources on environmental attitudes and behavior. The study is explorative since the relation between subjective resources and environmental attitudes and behavior to our knowledge has never been investigated. There are good reasons to expect both negative and positive correlations between perceived scarcity of resources and environmental behavior (partly depending on what resource we have in mind). The theoretical model is based on an understanding of environmental behavior as a collective action problem based in a social dilemma. The link between perceived scarcity of resources and environmental attitudes and behavior is investigated in a survey to the Swedish public (N = 978), which also controls for people's social value orientation (SVO), subjective well-being, and generalized trust and trust in environmental institutions, as well as income, age and gender.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to gain a deeper understanding of the individual's own experiences on the way out of the abuse. The study was conducted with a hermeneutic / phenomenological approach in which qualitative interviews were conducted with five people including 2 women and 3 men. The selection criteria were that they'd had a long been abuse, and taken out of it for at least two years. Age ranged between 30 and 70 years, although their current living situation was diverse. It was difficult to find research involving individuals' experiences of the Community in relation to the road of drug abuse, hence it is still a relatively unexplored area which made it all the more interesting to study. In this study is the individual's experiences in focus to get a deeper knowledge and understanding of the phenomenon. The result showed the way out of drug abuse may look and be perceived and how the community has been, and is, an important part of this process. The motivation to get out of drug abuse differed for the respondents. Several expressed the fellowship of other former addicts was important to them as a motivation in your own process. To maintain contact with the families and especially their children have also served as support and motivation. The results also showed that their life today works well even if they are still in the process to remain drug-free. Most interview participants are now living drug free and are motivated to continue their journey in life with experiences of abuse that led to and that many of them want to help others who are in the same process.

Brukarinflytande - en fråga om att bruka makt: En kvalitativ studie om brukarinflytande för personer med psykiska funktionsnedsättningar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Strukturella villkor: En åldersfråga: En kritisk åldersstudie om barns strukturella villkor utifrån kommunala hemsidors information om behandling vid spelproblem2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present study aims to, through a critical age perspective, describe and illustrate the structural conditions of the age category of children based on the information about treatment for gambling problems provided by municipal websites. The study has a quantitative character and in order to answer the study's questions, a content analysis of municipal websites (N = 119) was conducted. 52,1% of those websites contained information on treatment for gambling problems (n = 62). The result showed a statistically significant difference in the distribution regarding information by municipal websites on treatment for gambling problems ( χ² = 9,478a , df = 2, p = ,009) and treatment methods ( χ² = 13,400a , df =2, p = ,001) between the structural age categories. Throughout, age as an organizing principle was updated, and the age category of children was directed to information about treatment for gambling problems through municipal websites to a considerably lower extent than other age categories. This brought to light an age hierarchy and from a children perspective it is possible to state that children's structural conditions were unequal. When this was consistent, it is reasonable to assume that there is systematic inequality, which raises social stratification.

The problem-presentation in integration work: Construction of information needs for newly arrived immigrants2016In: 44th NERA Congress is ‘Social Justice, Equality and Solidarity in Education?, 2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Today people migrate and leave societies that cannot secure human life and safety, where one's worth as a human is being violated. People are fleeing not only from, but also to places. When arriving to a new society it needs to be described, to make it possible to meet it and act in it. In dialogue and interaction with groups, society therefor must find and describe models for inclusion. In Sweden, as residence permits are obtained, so called ‘integration workers’ are engaged in Civic Orientation, to support the process by means of which individuals are to become knowledgeable enough to exert their agency as citizens (knowing your rights and obligations).

The overall object is to create linkages between the state and the ‘newly arrived immigrants’. Civic orientation is a course for 60 h, regulated by Swedish law and EU has given directions that every member state is supposed to have some form of civic education, but every country is responsible for organizing and develop their own content. Often, in Sweden, the integration workers themselves have immigrated to Sweden and the course is given in the mother tongue of the immigrants.

This study is a workplace study with interest in professional knowledge to create stable and flexible knowledge in the work, understood as how the workers construct relevance for their doings in interaction. In this study the specific interest is to understand the construction of newcomers' information needs, the problem being worked with. The need of information is understood as not given or static, but as a (re)produced in regular social practices (Edwards, 2005), and both integrationworkers and newcomers mutually orient to a set of ideas when constructing needs. The analytical interest is also to outline how some views is made more significant or more authoritative with respect to the matter at hand (Heritage and Raymond, 2005).

In reasoning about needs, the access to countries, as epistemic domains is often used to make claims about what kind of information that is needed. In other words, the country that the immigrants comes from is often arranged to be the source of knowledge. The data material was generated through video recordings and interviews over a period of 1.5 years, from backstage (workmeetings) and frontstage work (with ‘newly arrived immigrants’). I identify two patterns that are analytically distinctive when looking at how the problem- presentation in civic orientation is negotiated. Either is it the knowledge about the Swedish society that is the matter at hand, or is it to educate those who have not yet come to a certain ´understanding´. This are two very different worktasks, but they seems to be connected in the practice.

Att rädda sitt liv istället för att ta livet av sig: en studie kring ungdomar och självskadebeteende2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how the treatment staffexperience and handles the work with girls who self-injure . In order to answer thesequestions we interviewed six people working at two different institutions where theyworked with girls who self-injure.

In this study, in summary, we see that it evokes many strong emotions in those who workwith these girls. We saw treatment staff expressing the need for support in their work tokeep work enjoyable but also to create an understanding of the girl's behavior.Treatment staff uses clear protocol dealing with a girl who is injured. The protocol arepartly for the other girls who live in the same housing so that there will not be a contagioneffect and partly for the individual girl who does not get the attention which otherwisewould reinforce the behavior. We also see that the treatment staff needs support in their work to maintain a goodtreatment for girls.

Our conclusion is that the staff group is the most important asset the treatment staff feelthat they have at work. Education is one of the important ways through which thetreatment staff maintain their enthusiasm to their work. Belonging to a cohesive workgroup provides staff with a feeling of security at their job place. Within a work group thereare also opportunities to reflect on difficult events. This allows the possibility to processwhat they experienced. Treatment personnel can despite an established approach feelambivalence in their work.
