Digitaliseringens påverkan på redovisningsbranschen: En multipel fallstudie av två redovisningsbyråer inom den privata sektorn2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digitization is a factor that grows in step with society's changes, and thus different organizations must take into account a change process that means meeting new perspectives and ways of working. The accounting process is one of many processes that have undergone a revolutionary development and are still in constant change. This study will therefore investigate how digitization has affected the accounting process in various organizations. The purpose of this essay is to get a more detailed picture of how accounting consultants have been affected by the change due to digitization in a more digitized accounting firm and a less digitized accounting firm in the private sector. The study was conducted using a qualitative method where the data collection was done at two agencies in the private sector through a survey. The survey consisted of open survey questions where the respondents were allowed to answer freely. The results showed that the digitization of the accounting process increased the effectiveness of the work. This has led to more time being left over for other tasks such as advice. The study has also shown that the accounting consultants predominantly have a positive attitude towards the work becoming more and more digitized. By comparing the accounting process between two different agencies, we have been able to see how the digitization process has affected the accounting agencies. In the more digitized office, work has become more efficient as the office has become paperless. In the less digitized accounting firm, the work for the parts that have been digitized has become more efficient, while the other parts are under an ongoing development process.

Media and the Muslims: A thesis on media framing & priming in Argentina2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

All over the western world, media are giving Muslims the role as scapegoats for everything that is wrong with society. Through grave generalizations as well as alleged connections between Islam and terrorism, social categorizations are established in which Muslims become the ‘others’. Research has been made on a various amount of western nations, with the exception of a few, and this thesis explores how Argentinean media portray Islam and Muslims. With the use of quantitative and qualitative text analyses, the result will show the levels of priming and framing in relation to earlier research. By assuming social constructivism, a high frequency of these two ‘faces of power’ would affect societal relations, possibly creating a gap between an ‘us’ and ‘them’. Our findings suggest, however, this is not the case in Argentina; on the contrary, Argentinean media lack the frames which make Muslims ‘others’. This important discovery implies that the relationship between Islam and the West of today does not necessarily have to be one of two combatants, incapable of coexisting.

Rekryteringsprocessen: En studie om de olika faktorer som påverkar rekrytering2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The recruitment-subject is very emotional regardless of context. We noticed initially that the subject is very diverse and therefore we had to limit ourselves. The intent of the study was to be objective. We chose to research about the recruitment process and the building blocks behind it. The process is undeniably the heart of the recruitment process and employee turnover, which is why it should be highly developed and effective.

This study is primarily based on a qualitative method, whereas the purpose is to answer the research question; "How does the recruitment process work? – What is the most important part in the recruitment process?". Theory and research are based on current as well as established work within the subject. The reason we use established work is that it is still useful to the degree that it has not been proved wrong or obsolete to this day. The empirics was gathered through six different set of interviews with different participants. The participants are employed within different areas of their respective organization and thereby give us different perspectives of the process. The study results in an analysis of our theory and empirics. The analysis in turn will be based upon our hermeneutical method, meaning that it is our own interpretation based on the research material. The interpretation is validated based on the theory and research presented in the study. The analysis results in a conclusion that answers the two research questions.

The result of our research study proves that the process is dependent on different factors, such as requirement analysis, selection methods and well planned interviews. A key to success during the recruitment process are personality and behavior tests. The most important factor during the recruitment process is the more current method, which is based on e-recruitment. E-recruitment focuses on being effective and automated. It is a hybrid among the studied recruitment forms that does not affect the size of the recruiting organization.

Immersiva konstupplevelser i VR för äldre: en pilotstudie med fokus på kommunanställdas perspektiv2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Previous research shows that individuals who live a rich life filled with experiences rate their perceived well-being higher. Individuals who, for various reasons, become isolated in care homes as elderly, miss out on experiences they previously enriched their lives with. One way to ensure that these isolated individuals can continue to experience new things, such as art, is by offering immersive experiences in VR.

This pilot project is considered to have largely succeeded in fulfilling its purpose of finding common factors on which to build a possible collaboration between the different administrations of Kommunen (pseudonym). This with the aim of being able to create something reminiscent of a project carried out in Halmstad. The pilot project has also managed to capture what is currently being done to activate older people, which the current plans are, and what visions of how immersive VR could be used in the future exists. Finally, the project has also managed to identify some of the challenges and possible difficulties that the implementation of a similar project could be affected by. To do this, a number of key people within Kommunen's various operations have been interviewed to examine interests, opportunities, conditions and perceived limitations. The responses have then been thematized and analyzed in order to ascertain the results.

The most obvious challenge with such an implementation was expressed by all administrations to be limited resources in terms of finances, personnel and time. However, the conclusion indicates that there is both willingness and good opportunities for collaboration between the various administrations within Kommunen to create immersive experiences in VR.

Donald Trump - The American Machiavelli?: A single case study of Trump’s political leadership in relation to the USMexican border wall2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The following bachelor’s thesis aims to examine Donald Trump’s political leadership style, and which leadership attributes he displays to gain follower support behind political policy propositions. Based on the leadership theories of Machiavellianism and charismatic leadership, the thesis more specifically examines: How Donald Trump, if at all, displays Machiavellian and charismatic leadership attributes in his political leadership. In particular, how are these attributes displayed when justifying his proposition of a US-Mexican border wall? The thesis builds upon a single case study and uses a qualitative content analysis in order to analyze the data. Through gathered speeches from the search tool “factba.se”, it has been observed that Trump’s leadership concerning the wall against the Mexican border display certain Machiavellian and charismatic leadership attributes. The results indicate that the most frequently displayed attributes in Trump’s political leadership regarding the wall is that he uses authoritarian and confident arguments to a higher extent than narcissistic and controversial arguments to justify his proposition of a US-Mexican border wall.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to get a deeper understanding of what motivates older adults to use and learn information and communication technology (ICT). This has been investigated with qualitative interviews with older adults who use ICT. During the interviews the participants were allowed to share their experiences and thoughts about what motivates them to use and learn ICT.

The result of the study shows that older adults are motivated by various reasons to use and learn ICT. In order for them to be motivated to even start using new ICT services or units, they need to be introduced to it and after that a need can be created. This means that ICT must be useful and older adults need to understand the benefits and advantages of using it in order to even want to learn it. Important factors that older adults experience when learning new ICT are clear instructions, repetition, that they should be able to try for themselves, and that the learning session shouldn’t go too fast. The social environment around our informants has also proven to be an important factor in learning ICT.

Virtual Reality och Augmented Reality inom pedagogiken: Lärares uppfattningar om Virtual Reality och Augmented Reality som ett hjälpmedel iutbildning på grundskole- och gymnasienivå2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    From work-integrated learning (WIL) to WIL-element2017In: INTED2017 Proceedings, IATED-INT ASSOC TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT, LAURI VOLPI 6, VALENICA, BURJASSOT 46100, SPAIN , 2017, p. 7679-7685Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Well-being in the society and improvement of people's life standards are linked to sustainable development in society. Stimulation of the individual's learning, competencies and career development contributes to community development and hence promotion of the sustainable development of our society in the future. Therefore it is of great importance to discuss different learning concepts and developing theories of learning and work integrated learning (WIL).University West vision is a work integrated learning, as approach and method. Discussion and debate about what WIL is and how it should be applied in education and courses is going on constantly on the university and has largely been made since the university was founded. On the syllabuses of different courses on basic and advanced level, stats that the work integrated learning elements should be mentioned. On the guidelines presents examples of what WIL-element can be, leaves to those who plans the courses to identify what such a moment can be. My view is that; as definition and identification of such moments are, left to every employee, there is an uncertainty in what WIL-element actually is. Different disciplines can define the concept differently and thereby the uncertainty is high about what really WIL-elements can be. That is why, I believe it is of great importance to discuss what WIL is?.Purpose of the study is to identify what the colleges at university west, consider to be WIL-elements and how it is applied in practice in courses. The study's purpose is also to contribute to the theoretical development of WIL and theories of learning.Part one is introduction. Part two deals with description of WIL, theoretical foundations for the study. Work-integrated learning has been defined differently and in different ways. But what is common is the combination of theory and practice or academia and work/workplace.In part three discusses approach and survey's design and empirical presentation. In part four presents some facts from reality, ie, empirical facts. Part five is about discussion and conclusions. When discussing WIL, often is focus and emphases is primarily on the workplace and experiential learning. While on University West, is focus on theoretical learning in the first place, not on the workplace. The focus is on the learning that happens at the university and how it should be linked to practice and workplace. This means that the starting point is from the opposite side. Another aspect is that, the perception of WIL, is vague and not precise.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is description and understanding of the individual career development (as entrepreneur or employee) as a dynamical process. I have studied the interaction and cooperation between different formal (politics) and informal (culture) institutions and their impacts on the individual's carrier development process (as entrepreneur as well as employee) during three different stages, i.e. socialization processes, opportunity identification processes, and finally career formation and development processes. Research methodology is qualitative i.e. case study, and consists of several cases. Study is based on twenty interviews at the two municipalities (10 from each one – four unemployed, three employed and three businessmen/entrepreneurs) and observation of municipalities at the west Sweden so called "Västra götalands Regionen". Individual's career development from two municipalities are compared with each other. Different categories (employed, unemployed and businessmen)are compared and differences in influences of institutions on different categories in two municipalities are identified and described. Study shows that both formal and informal institutions affect individual's career development process during three stages, i.e. socialization processes, career identification/creation processes, and finally career formation's development process. In other words, survey shows that, Politics and culture affects individual's career development and thereby regional development. Theoretical contributions are: results of this study can contribute to different understanding of entrepreneurship, employment and unemployment. It widens theoretical views of the subject, by understanding the role institutions can play at the individual's career development processes. 230 Practical contributions are: results can be used in individual career development by job centers and for planning and avoiding or facing future unemployment. It can also be used in companies and other workplaces planning and construction or formation of employee´s career development.

Personal Experiences of Somali Women in Uddevalla: A comparative case study on Somali women’s understandings of their experiences in the integration process2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In connection to an existing research project, Micro-migration and Integration with relevance for Uddevalla, this study aims to analyse and compare the subjective understandings of Somali women’s experiences in the integration process in the Swedish society. Integration is a multifaceted and ongoing process in which the self-understandings of this notion is bound to change over time in relation to socio-economic and cultural contexts. In light of this, the thesis employs a comparative case study that is based on data collected through focus group discussions with newly arrived women and women who have stayed in Sweden for a longer time. The analytical framework utilizes acculturation theory to study what traces of integration, assimilation, separation and marginalization can be identified in the selfunderstandings and how they develop over time. Some of the conclusions from the study by the interviewees notify language being crucial. Both groups understand that Swedish constitutes a step in the overall process for establishment and the newly arrived women showed an awareness about it being the ultimate factor that can speed up their own integration process. The findings of the research include that there is a deviation of the understandings between the groups when it comes to housing and identity. The group of newly arrived women with the exception of one participant, indicated a clear separation in regard to both aspects above whereas the women who have lived in Sweden for 9-10 years showed clear traces of integration. Hence, in the beginning of the integration process a person might have a theoretical understanding that indicates separation but experience a discursive shift towards the lens of integration.

Business and Financial Analysis of Arctic Paper Munkedals AB2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis evaluates both the business and financial performance of Arctic Paper Munkedals AB. The company was founded in 1817 and is located in Munkedal, Sweden. The evaluation was achieved through ratio analysis of the annual reports of Arctic Paper Munkedals AB over a five-year period and business performance analysis using the balanced scorecard model. The data collections are from the annual financial reports for five years before the 2008 recession. Different financial ratios were evaluated such as short-term liquidity ratios, leverage ratios, profitability ratios, asset utilization and capital market ratios. The mathematical calculations were established for ratio analysis from 2003-2007 along with graphical analysis and comparisons. According to Altman (The Journal of Finance, 1968), observed evidence for five years prior to failure was cited as conclusive that ratio analysis can be useful in the prediction of failure. The research paper also analyzes the business performance of Arctic Paper Munkedals AB using the balanced scorecard model. This model is a customer-based planning and process improvement system, with its primary focus on driving an organization's change process by identifying and evaluating pertinent performance measures. It complements the traditional financial perspective with other nonfinancial perspectives such as customer satisfaction, internal business process as well as learning and growth. The balanced set of performance measures tells a concise yet complete story about the achievement and performance of the organization toward its mission and goals. It provides a holistic view of what is happening in the organization.

Filmdockan: Dockfilmen : genre historia estetik2021Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The paper gives an overview of the work, career and poetics of Luis Bunuel, the most important surrealist in the world (active in the cinema of several countries – France, Mexico and Spain). The paper explains the roots of Bunuel’s poetics that derive from the filmmaker’s life experience and different art forms (Goya, Cervantes), his cinema role models (Lang, Eisenstein), his status among other filmmakers, social environment, provocation methods, stylistic techniques, his favorite themes and worldviews (for example, sexuality and constant criticism of Christianity in his films), the context of surrealist art and relationship with film industry. Although very often demonstrating a lack of interest for the rules of the dominant cinema, the traditional film making, even opposing in a planned and explicit manner, Bunuel proved, states the author of the paper, that he could participate (both as director and producer) even in the classical feature film cinematic framework. Considering the wide variety of surrealist (and avant-garde) cinema in general and the complexity of the work by Luis Bunuel, the paper tackles Dada elements and different types of surrealism. Finally, the paper examines the traces of surrealism in cinema and animated film in the post-Bunuel period (and undoubtedly under his influence).

    Abstract [en]

In the animated film of the 1970s and later, the modernist poetics of, for example, theZagrebSchoolstarted to feel outdated. This was the reason for the a whole group of new female and male authors to emerge and to tackle pressing social issues, including animated cinema as a new, alternative medium for public debate. Among a number of social issues tackled primarily in British and Canadian films, the field of gender inequality and the position of women in the society came to the foreground. The paper also follows the history of female presence in animated film and the history of female topics' affirmation in this medium, starting with Helen Smith Dayton, Lotte Reiniger and Mary Ellen Bute, to Marjut Rimminen and the influence of the Channel Four production (producer C. Kitson), or rather the authors such asCaroline Leaf, Angela Martin, Candy Guard, Alison Snowden, Karen Watson and Gillian Lacey. Special attention is dedicated to Alison De Vere and Joanna Quinn. Non.British authors are mentioned as well, such as Monique Renault. What is particularly interesting is the influence of British documentary tradition (alo0ng the lines of John Grierson( which blended with animated film and other visual arts traditions. However, in animated films women had to struggle for the right to comedy as an artistic choice as well because the prejudice related to female sense of humor was extremely strong. The author concludes by stating that contemporary animation does not discriminate against women at all.

A vivid connection: Comics and animation as a context for understanding the work of Nedeljko Dragic i Kresimir Zimonic2011In: Hrvatski filmski ljetopis/Croatian Film Cronicle, ISSN 1330-7665, no 68, p. 25-50Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Some of the most prominent authors of the Zagreb School of Animation were (or still are) equally active in the field of animations as in the field of caricature and comics. The co-dependency of interrelation of these two fields in terms of aesthetics, mindset and semiotics is being examined on the example of Nedeljko Dragic andKresimir Zimonic. The history of comic strips and caricature is brought into relation with animated film and with the emergence of modernist animation in particular. Moreover, a special emphasis is placed on the influence of the incursion of specific aesthetic movements, known as comic book schools, on the Croatian comic scene.

    Abstract [en]

Many important periods of the history of animation arose directly from and are part of the radical modernist wave with the epicentre in the USA that bombarded the world of animation after World War II and the influence of which is still felt today. Explaining the origin of American modernist animation in propaganda and commercial film, as well as in eminent artistic aspirations for artistic freedom, Ajanovic describes the main characteristic and the importance of production of the UPA animation studio, i. e. John Hubley, Stephen Bosustow and other leading figures of animation, placing their work within the production frames of the epoch and stressing their importance. By doing so, he argues in favour of the term modernist animation – a term that is much more precise and useful when analysing the mentioned phenomena – instead of the term reduced or stylized animation.

Animated Documentary – Documentary Animation2019In: Contemporary Animation JournalArticle in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

It seems that the first decades of the new millennium have brought about a small renaissance of documentaries, especially those that combine live action and animated pictures and even those visualiezd totally by employment of various animation techniques. My concern in the following chapter is the conspicuous propensity in Swedish animation towards animated documentary. In my view Sweden is the country that, besides Canada and Great Britain, has developed the most prolific production of films that merge documentary purposes and animated imagery.

In this chapter I define animated documentary, as I understand it. I will also take a look into the history of Swedish animation and documentary, with an emphasis on the features that might be the base for the development of the animated documentary. The text will also focus on some factors in the production and social background that, at least partly, explain why the animated documentary is such a prominent feature on the Swedish animation scene and, lastly, it will point at some films and filmmakers that eminently represent the genre.

    Abstract [sv]

Good Soldier Schweik in Civil Suit: Reflections of the Middle European Tradition of Humor in the Animated Films of the Zagreb School2023In: Asifa Academic Magazine, Vol. 1, no 1, p. 9-21Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

My ambition here is not to give a firm answer to the eternal question why man laughs. Just like love, humor remains an unsolvable mystery. We do not know why we love someone, just as we do not know what the source of humor is. Man does not know why he loves someone. Man does not know why he laughs at something or someone. And that is a good thing. Life without secrets would be infinitely boring.

Still, if not humor itself, we can identify what humor carries. Humor, just like art (and art and humor are often united), presents a vision of the world, one view of life.

This paper is an attempt to analyze humor in Middle European animation illustrated by the example of two characteristic films created within the Zagreb school of animation.

Already over the first decades of the twentieth century, film animation appeared in almost all middle European countries. Still, the golden age of this medium in this region lasted from the 1950s to the end of 1970s. After World War II, a significant number of animated film studios were founded in the region producing innovative and fresh art of animation often recognized at international film festivals.

There was no middle European equivalent of Popeye or Superman. Much like in regional literature and visual humor, in animation too there were heroes who were not heroes. Leading characters in middle European animation were often characterized by the “Schweikian” anomaly: little man, who felt like a looser, bearing no illusions towards the presence or the future.
