Coming out of the liberal closet: Think tanks and de-democratization in Poland2022In: Democratization, ISSN 1351-0347, E-ISSN 1743-890X, p. 1-19Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

De-democratization is a global trend, with an increasing number of governments gradually dismantling democratic institutions and norms in their countries. De-democratization can be seen as an incremental crisis that radically redraws the sociopolitical order. This article is among the first to highlight external knowledge producers in autocratizing contexts. Relying on a unique data set of 40 interviews with Polish think tankers conducted before and after the Law and Justice party came to power in 2015 and began pushing the country in an authoritarian direction, the article analyses how liberal think tanks handle de-democratization. The findings show that autocratization entails a reconfiguration of the think tank space; i.e. think tanks aligning with the government blossom and think tanks opposing the government are marginalized through a lack of public funding and access to policymakers. Second, significant changes in think tank tactics, strategies, and identities, especially among liberal organizations, are exposed. The doxic mode through which liberal think tanks produce analyses and provide policy advice as “nonpartisan experts” has shifted to the use of contentious tactics and the assumption of an openly political identity as “democracy defenders”

Segregationen i Trollhättan: Hur ser kommunpolitikerna på problemet?2023Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim with this study was to try getting an insight in how it is to live in the complex context in having it hbt (homo-bi-transsexual) disposition and to be Christian. We wanted on an individual level try to interpret and to understand through a queertheoretical perspective. We have done a qualitative study that we have based on 6st semi-structured interviews. Furthermore, the study's focus lies on persons who have an active life within the Christian context. The concepts that inform the entire study are heteronormativity, hbt and stigma. The analysis is based on an analysis model that is called Interpretative phenomenological analysis, and builds on lifting forward themes. A total of seven themes are lifted and they go by the names; Social rooms, Personal rooms, Adaptation, Quiet consensus, Discrimination, Admission and Future. In each theme, the interview persons' own experiences are lifted forward through quotations and are linked to our selected theory and concepts. Conclusions one can deduct of the analysis, is that it is a complex environment that however begins to become more including for hbt persons. The complex lies in that differently Christian parishes see differently on these questions and there is no clear common attitude. This gives various degrees on positive and negative sides with an hbt disposition in the Christian context.

Local perceptions and definitions of social sustainability: An illustration of Trollhättan municipality2022In: International Conference on Work Integrated Learning: Abstract Book, Trollhättan: University West , 2022, p. 60-61Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

More than thirty years after the publication of the the Brundtland report “Our Common Future” (World Commission on Environmental and Development, 1987), the social dimension of sustainability remains theoretically underdeveloped. Sweden has since the adoption of the Global Sustainable Development Goals set out to take a leading role in the implementation of these goals. Granted that Swedish municipalitie s enjoy a considerable degree of autonomy and thus provide citizens with a majority of public services, municipalities are central to the realization of national commitments to international agreements such as the Global Sustainable Development Goals. Consequently, part of the national strategy for realization of the Global Sustainable Development Goals consists of support to municipalities in developing local strategies for implementation of the goals. Previous research on policy implementation highlights the importance of the policy formulation stage for successful implementation of policy (Winter and Nielsen, 2008, Winter, 1986, Bardach, 1977). With the social dimension of sustainability left rather vague and undefined on the international and national level, municipalities are likely to face some challenges both in translating the social dimension of sustainability into local goals but also in the realization of these. Some researchers argue that it is necessary to differentiate between scientific sustainability studies and processes of defining sustainability at the political level (Griessler and Littig, 2005). On the contrary, I argue that one way of developing the concept of social sustainability theoretically could be to study these practical political processes of defining social aspects of sustainability. The aim of this research is thus to explore and understand the complexity of the social sustainability concept in the local context of a municipality in Sweden. This study is part of a collaborative project on sustainable societal development between University West and Trollhättan municipality. The study is designed as an explorative case study of Trollhättan municipality, in which I use theories on policy implementation and social sustainability to conduct a qualitative content analysis of policy documents. In addition to policy documents, I have also included field notes from participant observations from meetings and workshops at Trollhättan municipality during the time-period January-November 2022. The preliminary results of the analysis indicate that Trollhättan municipality understands sustainability as threedimensional consisting of ecological, economic, and social sustainability. Social sustainability is understood as an important dimension in its own right and not merely as a means to support the ecological dimension. The link between the social aspects and the ecological aspects of sustainability is fairly weak. In terms of substantive social sustainability, the local social sustainability strategy has a focus on housing, employment, gender quality, health, and well-being. The understanding of the procedural aspects of social sustainability in Trollhättan is centered around creating pre-conditions, possibilities, and opportunities for social sustainability rather than reaching social sustainability in itself. There is an emphasis on inhabitant participation, but this aspect is not yet clearly defined in terms of how this participation is to be facilitated. The social dimension of sustainable development remains vague and undefined. With this study I exp lore the possibility of using a work-integrated learning approach in order to contribute to the theoretical development of the social dimension of sustainable development. I suggest that one way of gaining a deeper understanding of social sustainability as a concept is to study the practice of formulating, designing, and implementing policy at the level closest to the people affected by it. In Sweden this is the municipal level. This study aims to contribute both to sustainability research, research on public administration and policy implementation as well as work-integrated learning.

”Same same but different”: En kvalitativ studie gällande könskonstruktioner i socialtjänstens barnavårdsutredningar2011Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to see how the social services whit their child welfare inquiries can be a part in maintaining the gender specific norms, expectations and values.

Our research questions are: How does the discourse about boys look; how are the boys described and valued in the inquiries? How does the discourse about girls look; how are the girls described and valued in the inquiries? What are the differences between the genders?

Our theoretical base is social construtivism and gendertheory. This is a qualitative study and critical discourse analysis is our method of choice.

Our material is 14 child welfare inquiries made by social services, half of them are about girls and half about boys.

In the analyse we have come to the conclusion that the focus in the girl inquiries differs some what from where the focus in the boy inquiries lays. When investigating the girls there social intercourse and sexual relations make out a big part of the texts, the later isn’t even mentioned in the boy inquiries. We do however find that the differences have changed in comparison with the previous research that’s presented in our study where it emphasized that girls are perceived as passive objects and the boys as active subjects. We have in our material been able to see that both boys and girls are perceived as subjects, but also objects depending on the situation.

    Abstract [sv]

The Quality Café: developing the World-Café method for organizational learning by including quality management tools2019In: Total Quality Management and Business Excellence, ISSN 1478-3363, E-ISSN 1478-3371, Vol. 30, no 13-14, p. 1515-1527Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the possibility of integrating the World Café method with the affinity diagram tool from quality management. The proposed combination is called the Quality Café. Quality Cafés were carried out at seven spa hotels, one municipality and two student organisations. The cafés were assessed with feedback seminars and questionnaires. The findings show that the method was appreciated by the participants. It contributed to profound dialogues with deepening insights, which stimulated creativity, increased understanding for quality issues and allowed a more holistic view. In addition, the method was experienced as enjoyable and in itself creating coherence. The findings were related to organisational learning theory and several connections were found. The Quality Café should be a useful method for researchers in social science as well as for practitioners. A limitation is that determining the specific effects of the Quality Café method compared to the original World Café is difficult.

Minimum Levels of Services of General Interest: what Fundamental Rights do Individuals and Services have?2013In: Europe XXI, ISSN 1429-7132, Vol. 23, p. 47-68Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The European Union is currently experiencing a period of significant upheaval. The financial crisis, structural changes in the economy and population decline in many regions combine to make a difficult situation even worse in respect of SGI. To mitigate these problems EU policy on economic, social and territorial cohesion aims to remove regional differences and to otherwise affect policies to ensure the right to the same service status regardless of localisation. This paper aims to discuss what a minimum level of SGI means to individuals and enterprises. The key EU policy documents offer no guidance in terms of defining what a minimum level of SGI is, for either individuals or enterprises. It is up to the Member States to define the thresholds; national policies, traditions and moral values thereby creating a vague and heterogeneous notion of what constitutes a minimum level of SGI provision.

Cracking the Body’s Armour: Young People´s Need for Musical Experiences in a Rational Society2010Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to problematize young people’s desires for musical experiences in Western society by theoretically analyzing such needs from a deep psychological as well as a sociological perspective. The rationalized society and new patterns of socialization form the foci of analysis. Further, special emphasis is placed on understanding and analyzing the causes of the high volume of music played at rock concerts and music festivals. Music is a medium that allows young people to get in contact with and process the deep psychological patterns that, in contemporary society, are often repressed by hard rationality. It is claimed that new patterns of socialization have made it more difficult for adolescents to establish contact with, and to integrate into, the pre-oedipal mental layer, which is a prerequisite for growth, achieving a greater degree of maturity, and the progression to and realization of new life phases.

    Abstract [sv]

Crossing Boundaries Through Work-integrated Knowledge Communities2003In: E-Learn: World Conference on E-Learning in Corporate, Government, Healthcare, and Higher Education, San Diego, CA: Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) , 2003, p. 1707-1710Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reports from the preliminary lessons learned of an action case study in which learning initiatives in a business organisation are investigated. The main question is abouthow to integrate knowledge and learning processes in business work processes? We are at present facing the challenge of integrating an actual business work process with an sustainable knowledgeand learning process in an on-going action case research project together with a company withinthe chemical industry. We argue for a greater appreciation of informal learning processes as powerful complements to formal training and capability building. The implications from the casestudy so far, are that the business processes need to reconsider its learning capacity from the pointof view of actual work practice. We propose the vision of a work-integrated knowledge community that is facilitated by crossing boundaries in the daily work practice of business organisations

What indicators to use when measuring services of general interest?2013In: Europe XXI, ISSN 1429-7132, Vol. 23, p. 7-28Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The services of general interest (SGI) have received increasing attention of the European Union, which considers them a key element of the European model of society. They not only play an important role in the ongoing competitiveness of the European economy, but are also essential for achieving the goal of promoting social and territorial cohesion. Their potential role in the pursuit of the objectives of European cohesion and convergence policies may be significant which calls for an appropriate measurement and analysis of territorial distribution. The indicators are assumed to be a key element in measuring and describing the SGI, however, it is necessary to make a serious reflection how such indicators should be selected. The selection of indicators can be conditioned by several factors, however, it is imperative to make a qualitative reflection on the adequacy and relevance of indicators to analyse the SGI. This reflection runs through the paper. The concept of indicators is addressed, and their strengths and weaknesses are discussed. The indicators are classified according to the role they play in the cause-effect relations in distinct territories. Three types of indicators are identified. Appraisal of indicators and review of literature render it possible to identify the most frequently used indicators and to see SGI analysis from several perspectives, thus verifying that indicators can present different meanings and relevance, based on a range of factors and the scale of analysis. Some of the uncertainties arising in the SGI territorial analysis, which can contribute to the success of the policy making process, are recognized through an example based on the ICT Telecommunication SGI sub-domain. Some procedures connected with the integration of different types of indicators are proposed in order to limit the emergent uncertainties resulting from their interpretation

Designing digital support for operator and maintenance personnel cognition and future skills in manufacturing industry2022In: INTED 2022 Proceedings: 16th International Technology, Education and Development Conference Online Conference. 7-8 March, 2022. / [ed] Luis Gómez Chova, University of Valencia, Spain; Agustín López Martínez, University of Barcelona, Spain, Ignacio Candel Torres, Capgemini, Spain, 2022, p. 9665-9673Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Industry 4.0 is believed to introduce new smart digital tools which transform manufacturing processes but affect production personnel’s work practice. Operators and maintenance personnel running the everyday operations need to learn and handle new routines and systems while maintaining production efficiency. Operators today are challenged when they must handle unexpected stops caused by machine failures and the following error recovery process of automated production systems. With complex digital tools and integrated production systems the error recovery process becomes complex because there is no one-size-fits-all solution and a lack of intelligent and automated restart systems. Even if there are defined routines for industrial work and structures for managing digital technologies, it is not adapted to the individuals’ cognitive processes neither to their workplace learning. Altogether it puts high pressure on operators’ knowledge and skills of restarting machines and systems caused by errors. The aim is to explore operators and maintenance personnel cognition and skills and how their roles vary in relevant aspects of situational awareness and workplace learning. In an on-going case we studied two industrial companies that produce similar components but are working differently with production and maintenance. Through nine interviews we investigate the differences between the companies, their current work practices, and future changes. With application of a situation awarenessmodel, we capture cognition and learning including task/system factors, perception and decision making, and individual factors. Perspectives of workplace learning and knowledge sharing between personnel and relations to the systems use are applied. Results indicate that rule-based behaviours are key for both operators and maintenance personnel. These behaviours are supported by the systems and routines, but complicated errors make the systems and routines prove inadequate. In conclusion, to design appropriate digital support tools both operators and maintenance personnel behaviour need to be supported, however they need to be supported differently since their function behaviours such as routines, system use and communication vary. In addition, future skills and competences needed forsupporting complex system tasks include knowledge of computational models and simulation, knowledge of the machines and how they interrelate with systems, and logic reasoning and robotic programming of automated production systems.

Alkohol: en aktör att räkna med2009In: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift, ISSN 0037-833X, Vol. 86, no 2, p. 192-200Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim is to investigate how dialogue planning can provide users and professionals with tools for learning and be a path to organizational development in the context of design and construction of a town square and a sports hall adjacent to a K-9 school. Design and construction was carried out in collaboration between a municipality, a building contractor, school staff and students. A model for dialogue planning using artistic practice and collaboration with an artist was applied to develop an authentic dialogue. An architect and an artist were project managers. Their role was to support students to formulate interests, needs and creative solutions. Awareness of the complexity of planning was developed.

Students’ participation had major impact on the design of the town square. With support, students can give a qualified contribution, significant for design of physical environment. Students’ involvement contributes to the learning of professional partners. Learning takes place primarily at the horizontal level around the students. Learning can be seen vertically among representatives of the school and community. Among building producers horizontal learning can be seen with entrepreneurs directly facing students.

Intergenerational Learning – Children Singing Along with Older People: Possibilities and Complications in a Project Context2016In: Advances in social sciences research journal, E-ISSN 2055-0286, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 187-200Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Culture for Older People is a project funded by Swedish Arts Council. The aim of the project, managed by heads of department’s för the preschool, the older care and the culture school, is increased well-being for older people. In this article one of the activities, Children Singing Along with Older People is scrutinised in an ongoing evaluation.  In this subproject, headed by expert music teachers together with preschool teachers and care home staff, five-year old preschoolers visit care homes for singing along with the residents. The project is poly-motivated; besides improved well-being for older people, also enhanced learning for the children and interprofessional learning for staff. The concept musicking, which highlights music as an activity creating community and relations between participators, is used for discussing the meetings between the children and older people. Results are based on observations of activities and interviews with staff. Music is an activity that can be used for enhanced well-being and creating relations as well as learning. Nonetheless there are issues in the project that need to be discussed e. g. children’s participation and role, the older’s activity or desire for passivity and support for learning among the staff as well among children and older.

Heteronormativitet i Socialtjänsten: Homo- och bisexuellas upplevelser av bemötandet2009Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the essay is to examine Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual person’s experiences of the Social Services treatment. Our question is: How do Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual person’s experience the treatment in a relief seeking situation at Social Services? We have a social constructive point of view. Our theoretical foundation is heteronormativity, heterosexism, homophobia, coming out/disclosure, intersectionality, master suppression techniques and we discuss Social Services as a system. We used a qualitative research method and have done five semi-structured interviews, with three men and two women aged 17- 31 years. The empirical material has been analysed by using IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) model, where we used the interviewees own words through which we composed three major themes; Starting point in the meeting with Social Services, Sexual orientation and the treatment of the Social Service. What kind of contact our interviewees had with the Social Services and how they perceive their sexual orientation and their experiences of how it is to be gay, lesbian or bisexual is of relevance in their contact with the Social Services. It will affect their ability to act and to what extent they will feel able to be open about their sexuality. Our interviewees tell of a treatment by the Social Services which in various ways makes their sexual orientation invisible, ridicules or puts blame and shame on them. We also have a few examples of neutral treatment from the Social Services concerning sexual orientation. In the essay we have divided the care relationship into a systematic level and a personal level. Our interpretation is that Social Services on a systematic level have a heteronormative culture in the organization. This leads to a heterosexistic treatment. The personal level gives the individual social worker a certain amount of flexibility and sometimes it leads to a homophobic treatment but it can also lead to a treatment that makes it possible to break with the heteronorm. We seek a Social Services that actively works towards breaking down the heteronormativity inside the organization.

Vilka mänskliga rättigheter?: En studie om hur Amnestys elevportal och en samhällskunskapsbok presenterar mänskliga rättigheter2024Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Child poverty is a social problem that is highly topical in the media and in public debate. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the situation of the poor children in Sweden, this in order to develop empowerment strategies that could help them, from a social pedagogic approach. Our essay is written as a literature review and through text analysis we have sought answers to the questions: What problems do the children living in poverty face in their homes, at school and in their spare time? How do they handle their situation? What are the needs of these children? Can we make it easier for them and if so, in what way? In our result we looked at the problems poor children face and how they handle them. The result shows that they encounter limitations and experience feelings of shame, in comparison with other children. The school was found to be a central arena where the problems were obvious. Children bear much inwardly, and have an economic consciousness. To deal with problems they use different strategies to reduce their needs, to hide their situation and so on. In the analysis the children's needs, based on empowerment and previous research, are highlighted. It was found that the children need to be strengthened and given opportunities to participate. We conclude with a discussion on how we can facilitate for the children living in poverty. The professionals, for example at schools, need to be aware of structures that exist and which create a sense of exclusion.
