    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

About 100 000 refuges arrive in Sweden each year and almost a quarter of them are school children. The way they are treated affect their future life in Sweden and participation in The Swedish society. The purpose of this study is to highlight and discuss how the newly arrived schoolchildren are included in inclusion and exclusion processes in the Swedish school system, as well as the teachers' part in their inclusion process. The study will also discuss Work Integrated Learning as a working method for operational development and how this method can affect teachers' work. The investigation is a qualitative study. Empirically it includes seven interviews with teachers, from a preparatory class and a regular class year 3. Subsequent empirical evidence also consists of participant observation which I did in the preparatory class and in the regular class.

The results are presented thematically and show that the newly arrived schoolchildren are included in both inclusion and exclusion processes in the Swedish school system simultaneously. The teachers' act in the inclusion process is central. At the same time the study's empirical evidence show that teachers and management in the school investigation break all the rules for Work Integrated Learning proposes for operational development. It shows that collaboration between teachers from different working groups do not exist.

Psykisk ohälsa bland elever - vad händer och vad gör skolan?: En kvalitativ studie om hur skolan förebygger samt arbetar kring elever med psykisk ohälsa2021Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Coordinated Individual Plan: is this a solution for complex organizations to handle complex needs?2018In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, p. 1-17Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Persons with mental health problems and substance abuse often have complex needs requiring many kinds of help concurrently. In Sweden, an attempt has been made to counterbalance the effects of fragmentation by means of legislation on collaboration, requiring on the individual level the use of Coordinated Individual Plans (Sw. Samordnad Individuell Plan, SIP). The aim of the study is to explore collaboration as it is indicated in SIP and other case documentation with focus on how SIP is motivated, and what kind and degree of collaboration is indicated by the documentation. 12 individual case files have been studied in six local authorities and the results have been analyzed in relation to a regional collaboration agreement and local collaboration agreements. The results show unclear motivation for SIP and that SIP is primarily used for documentation of short-term planning. Use of SIP and participation in SIP appears also to be uneven. The authors characterize SIP as an unsystematic form of interagency meeting, with documentation indicating a relatively low to moderate level of collaboration. The authors question whether SIP is an optimal form for collaboration and suggest that more distinct models such as case management or multidisciplinary teams could be more effective.

Socialpedagogik i tvångsvård: professionellas syn på delaktighet och motivation inom LVM2011Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The overall aim is to describe the importance of professional supervision in social work. Objectives are specified based on three specific aims: to describe and to understand how social workers experience professional supervision, to describe and to understand how social workers perceive the supervisor's role, and to describe and to understand why group supervision is perceived as an important part of professional supervision. To seek answers semi-structured interviews were applied, in conversation with social workers. The analytical method is inspired by grounded theory. The analysis process was interpreted the empirical material from a systems theory perspective.

The results show that professional supervision provides an opportunity for reflection, which promotes the development of social worker skills in the work with clients. With expertise follows a greater self-confidence and well-being. The supervisor has a major responsibility in the professional supervision of experienced social workers. Professionalism and a respectful response are requested. In group supervision colleagues learn from each other's experiences, something that is perceived valuable.

The conclusion is that professional supervision is perceived as positive and necessary as it contributes to reflection and professional development. This provides a greater professionalism. The supervisor performs an important function; a presumption is that the supervisor has the right skills. Group supervision is perceived as an important part if colleagues are attuned and confident with each other. An essential knowledge exchange can then occur.

"Vi är olika pusselbitar där alla delar behövs": En mixed method-studie om skolpersonalens perspektiv på samverkan med socialtjänsten2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There is a large need for collaboration between the school and social services for children who are harmed, or risk being harmed. The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate obstacles and opportunities for this collaboration, as well as, if this collaboration has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Theory about collaboration was used to analyse this.

A mixed method was used – a survey and two follow-up interviews. Both the survey and interviews were sent to and answered by primary school personnel from three different municipalities. 43 respondents participated in the survey, with a mean age of 45 years and a mean year worked in school of 17 years.

The results show that a majority of the respondents agree that their opinions are valued and that an open dialogue is encouraged, but fewer think that they receive enough information and feedback from the social services. The T-test-analysis shows a significant difference between teachers and other personnel for the question regarding knowledge about the social services’ work, along with the questions about if enough information and time is given.

The correlation analysis reveals a strong, positive correlation between multiple of the survey questions, such as between involvement by the social services and perceived common goals. Thea nalysis of the interviews was in line with the results from the survey. Trust in the social services and having enough resources for collaboration also emerge as possibilities for collaboration. However, the study does not show clear results regarding how the collaboration has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but some changes in collaboration appear to have happened – above all in regard to communication.

Service user involvement enhanced the research quality in a study using interpretative phenomenological analysis: the power of multiple perspectives2017In: Journal of Advanced Nursing, ISSN 0309-2402, E-ISSN 1365-2648, Vol. 73, no 1, p. 265-278Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIM:The aim of this study was to examine how service user involvement can contribute to the development of interpretative phenomenological analysis methodology and enhance research quality.BACKGROUND:Interpretative phenomenological analysis is a qualitative methodology used in nursing research internationally to understand human experiences that are essential to the participants. Service user involvement is requested in nursing research.

DESIGN:We share experiences from 4 years of collaboration (2012-2015) on a mental health promotion project, which involved an advisory team.

METHODS:Five research advisors either with a diagnosis or related to a person with severe mental illness constituted the team. They collaborated with the research fellow throughout the entire research process and have co-authored this article. We examined the joint process of analysing the empirical data from interviews. Our analytical discussions were audiotaped, transcribed and subsequently interpreted following the guidelines for good qualitative analysis in interpretative phenomenological analysis studies.

RESULTS:The advisory team became 'the researcher's helping hand'. Multiple perspectives influenced the qualitative analysis, which gave more insightful interpretations of nuances, complexity, richness or ambiguity in the interviewed participants' accounts. The outcome of the service user involvement was increased breadth and depth in findings.

CONCLUSION:Service user involvement improved the research quality in a nursing research project on mental health promotion. The interpretative element of interpretative phenomenological analysis was enhanced by the emergence of multiple perspectives in the qualitative analysis of the empirical data. We argue that service user involvement and interpretative phenomenological analysis methodology can mutually reinforce each other and strengthen qualitative methodology.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to illuminate and analyze how newly arrived adolescents describe their experiences of starting over in a new school, in a new land. The essay will explain and illuminate the refugee adolescents’ experiences of starting over in a new school and learn a new language and make new friends and what this challenge mean for them. The essay describes the language- and the school's impact on newly arrived students’ participation. My study is based on qualitative methods, based on interviews with six individuals who have the experience of being a newly arrived student. The analysis of the study was made with IPA (Interpretative phenomenological analysis). IPA is a combination of phenomenology and hermeneutic perspective. Theoretical premises are the socio-cultural theory and postcolonial theory. With socio-cultural theory I explain and analyze the participation and community importance for the learning process among newly arrived students. I use postcolonial theory to analyze the post-colonial order in our current school. I have found that newly arrived students are facing a difficult challenge when they start school. The participants experienced that it was difficult to make friends, learn a new language and become part of the community. The participants experienced both inclusion and exclusion in school and they have been exposed to violations, stigmatization and bullying. The school had an important role in the newly arrivals' lives, especially during the first years in Sweden because in school they meet peers and new people. Swedish language is a requirement for new arrivals so they will cope with life and get involved in school. It takes a long time for newly arrived students to be accepted in school, learn a new language and adapt to the new country.

The emerging concepts of participation and belonging in social pedagogy2020In: Papers of Social Pedagogy, Vol. 13, no 1, p. 9-33Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During the last few decades, the concepts of participation and belonging has frequently beenused within the social welfare field in general, and within the field of disability researchspecifically. Additionally, in Scandinavia the concept of participation has become increasinglyused in social work and social pedagogy programmes at universities. However, there's ratherlittle known about how participation can be understood and related to social pedagogy, sincethe concept has a broad range of meanings, e.g. a sense of belonging. This paper aims to identifyand discuss understandings of participation and belonging with relevance for social work andsocial pedagogy. Empirical illustrations have been gathered with ethnographical methods andanalysed in accordance with an interpretive tradition. It is argued that the concept ofparticipation can be attributed to different meanings in different ideological, theoretical, andinstitutional practice contexts (e.g. schools that offer special needs programmes, the transitionto working life, online social networking). Consequently, it's a challenge to provide adequatedefinitions of the concept. The inference drawn is that the aspect of belonging as it relates tosocial participation can be attributed to its particular importance for social pedagogy. Animplication for professional practice is the need to pay attention to alternative identificationsthat are not based on notions of a stable, constant sense of belonging to a categorical group.

    Abstract [en]

This anthology describes and discusses what characterizes social pedagogical action in theory and practice. Initially a brief introduction to some common ways of theoretically approaching the concept of action will be provided, but with particular focus on the importance of the act in social pedagogy. After that, seven chapters will follow written by colleagues (in some cases accompanied by representatives of social pedagogue practitioners) at the Department of Social Work and Social Pedagogy at the University West in Trollhättan, Sweden. The authors, presented in more detail in connection with each chapter, have long experience of teaching at the Social Pedagogical Program and researching questions with relevance of social pedagogy. The seven chapters give the reader different perspectives on "social pedagogical action" with a stamp in the respective authors' field of interest. In this way there is an exhibition of several social pedagogical arenas that can fertilize each other in different ways. The various chapters also represent, to some extent, social education such as research, education and practice. In the introduction of anthology, an overview is given of the contents of the seven chapters' contributions. Finally, the editors of the anthology reflect on the conditions, challenges and opportunities that are required for organizing social pedagogical action.

Belonging and multidimensional self-expectations: Transition from upper secondary special programmes to working life for pupils with intellectual disabilities in Sweden2009In: La nouvelle revue de l'adaptation et de la scolarisation, ISSN 1957-0341, Vol. 48, no 4, p. 255-265Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article we review current research – some of our own and others – on the transition between school and work for young people with intellectual disabilities in Sweden. Two main paths of transition are identified. The first is an introduction to the special needs system of work and occupation within the Swedish welfare state, a continuation of the special needs programme that pupils with intellectual disabilities attend in Sweden. The second path of transition includes more complex self-expectations and belongings both in the special need system and more ordinary life and work. Both paths are discussed in relation to current research and welfare policy. Here, we draw on recent theoretical development in relation to concepts like multidimensional identifications and mixed identities in the fields of international migration and ethnic relations.

    Abstract [en]

Although research on young people's identification processes on the Internet is a growing field, few studies illustrate conditions for young people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Previous studies have shown that young people with ID are worried about being marginalized, and that many in fact are lonelier than other young people. Internet and social networking sites might be of vital importance as a space for exploring alternative and less stigmatized identities. This article reports findings from individual interviews with 27 young people with ID in Sweden. The transcribed interviews were analyzed using a thematic content analysis. A prominent finding concerned the informants being well aware of both risks and opportunities using Internet and Social Networking Sites. Consequently, the more they interacted with non-disabled peers, the more they experienced negative consequences of Internet use. These circumstances rather lead to downsizing than upsizing Internet use, and less participation on Social Networking Sites. The experiences of the informants are discussed in a conceptual framework of social identity, participation, and emancipation. We recommend that social work practitioners reflect upon the ways that support can be arranged in order to empower young people with ID to participate on the Internet.

Teachers’ and parents’ views on the Internet and social media usage by pupils with intellectual disabilities2015In: Journal of Intellectual Disabilities, ISSN 1744-6295, E-ISSN 1744-6309, Vol. 19, no 1, p. 22-33Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article reports experiences from a Swedish study, discussing teachers’ and parents’ views on how young people with intellectual disabilities use the Internet and social media. Five semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with teachers (n = 8) in special programmes in upper secondary schools for pupils with intellectual disabilities and parents (n = 5) of pupils in the same form of schooling, and they were analysed with thematic analysis. Teachers more strongly emphasize a pupil’s use of the Internet for interactive purposes. Parents had expectations that the Internet could be a tool for gaining more awareness of one’s own disability and a way to meet other peer group pupils. Teachers’ and parents’ perspectives on the Internet and social media usage are important since it is imperative to show how support can be provided for young people with intellectual disabilities.

    Abstract [sv]

Construction of service users in strategic collaboration including mental health and social services, and service user organisations: [Konstruktionen av brukare i strategisk samverkan mellan psykiatri, socialtjänst och brukarorganisationer]2020In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664, Vol. 23, no 4, p. 594-605, article id UNSP 1589426Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Terms used to refer to people who use welfare services have been under change and are under continuous debate. Here, seven analytical categories from terms used in 40 mental health strategic collaboration meetings including human service organisations representatives and service user organisations representatives are analysed to study the construction of the service user in mental health. The categories were set up in relation to characteristics, how and when they were used, and who was using them. Results showed that service user representatives and professionals shared some categories; some categories differed in how they were used and had dissimilar starting points, while one group exclusively used some. The use of categories could also be divided into a collective and an individual perspective. Participants agreed on service users having complex needs but not essentially different. Service user representatives emphasised a structural perspective, a society unequipped to meet service users’ needs while respecting their citizenship. Professionals more often used the individual perspective, where the troubles service users faced were put on an individual level. Their categories were better established and thus more resilient to resistance. Most prominent were issues on service users’ independence, accountability, and collective or individual perspective.

    Abstract [en]

There is a steady critique towards the mental health field stating that people with mental health problems do not get the assistance they need. Often, this critique states that collaboration between different organisations is lacking or non-functional. As an increasingly common part in collaboration, service user participation has also been included in this critique as not being adequately performed. Within the mental health field, many studies has focus on collaboration and service user participation on operational level, with and between professionals in direct interaction with service users. Not as many has studied the strategic level of collaboration, between leaders and managers, planning and structuring the organisation of mental health services. This level has also within the operational level studies often been pointed out as paramount to collaboration on operational level.

The present thesis aims to describe and analyse collaboration and service user participation on strategic level. The following research questions are included: how are the strategic collaboration councils composed, and how do the participants handle the work within them? What experiences and opinions on collaboration do the participants have? How do the participants handle possibly contradicting expectations and interests from the surroundings and from their own organisations? How are service users and service user participation socially constructed, and what do such constructions entail? How do the participants handle collaboration as a practically unavoidable way of working?

Eight strategic collaboration councils from the north, middle, and south of Sweden were included in the study. The participants in these represented mostly social and mental health services, and in some cases Arbetsförmedlingen (the Swedish Public Employment Service), Försäkringskassan (Sweden's social insurance agency), and service user organisations. 80 participants in all were included in the study, mostly managers. The councils were observed during one year, and the participants were asked to participate inan interview and a questionnaire. The material was analysed with the assistance of NVivo9 and SPSS, and by the theoretical aid of new institutionalism, discourse analytic perspective, and negotiation

The results showed a collaboration between the participants that revolved around norm and practice of collaboration. While all participants had very homogenous opinions and experiences of collaboration, showing of a strong norm supported by laws and regulations, there were also a discussion that showed of the possibility to negotiate that norm. Through negotiation and normative arguments, the participants could adhere to the norm that brings legitimacy to the organisation and the collaboration council, while further own interests and interpretations. Negotiation about collaboration meant that the participants could discuss collaboration in itself. Through choosing normative arguments, they could put forward certain aspects of the collaboration norm which gave latitude within the norm. Here, the norm came forward as collaboration should be done by being or becoming to be united, while having good relationships and an open discussion. The dilemma that showed through the negotiation and normative arguments was that while collaboration must be built on good relationships that can withstand disagreements and criticism, one cannot jeopardize the relationships by bringing up contentious topics. But, if pressing matters because of this are not allowed to be discussed, collaboration is at risk to be perceived as pointless. Collaboration through negotiation showed negotiation as a mean to get things done and to handle interests and interpretations in the collaboration councils. These negotiations were both implicit and explicit and were based in the collaboration norm. Normative arguments also served a purpose in building and strengthening the relationships between the participants, putting relationships as a central part of collaboration. Through normative arguments based in the collaboration norm, participants could preserve consensus and discuss disagreements, interpretations, and interests without risking the relationships. Service user representatives tended to be apart in negotiation about collaboration, but not in collaboration through negotiation. Even so, the service user representatives made a mark within the collaboration councils indiscussions and agendas, showing a plausible increasingly stronger position within in strategic collaboration.

    Abstract [en]

Similar narratives from children in care have been identified in South Africa and Sweden, signalling that children in care need to be heard and respected for their capabilities to influence social change. Many significant decisions directly affecting their lives are made without their participation. This violates their rights and, in particular, the right to participate in matters that concern them. International treaties such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC, 1989) and regional and local policy and legislation in Sweden and South Africa stipulate that children should participate in decisions that affect their well-being. These policy directives are essential for social workers responsible for services to children in alternative care as they are obligated to adhere to them. However, there is uncertainty about how to understand the concept of child participation, how to utilise it in practice to ensure the best interest of the child principle, and what challenges that are connected to the implementation. This workshop invites attendees to take part of a presentation of our mutual work so far and to explore responses to questions about the participation of children in alternative care  . Attendees will discuss topics such as: What is child participation? What examples do you have of how children can participate in decision-making? What do you need or want to enable work on child participation? Abstract [en]

Research studies and a multitude of reports in both countries have signaled that children in care, avulnerable group in society, are not heard or respected for their capabilities to influence social change. This in disagreement with the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, legislation and steering documents both in South Africa and Sweden. Childrens’participation in their own development and decision-making is fundamental fortheir current and futurewell-being as well as the future of the society. The aim of this South African and Swedish study is to contribute knowledge and social development strategies for social change through child agency andparticipation by joint research projects among the participating universities, capacity development ofemerging researchers and postgraduate students by including them in workshops in South Africa andSweden, discussions with local NGOs and government departments and to advance knowledge in addressing issues of child agency, participation and social transformation. In October 2021, as a partof this project, a digital workshop with the participation of researchers and practitioners in Swedenand South Africa and in collaboration with UNICEF was conducted. Social workers from Swedenand South Africa presented projects on participation of children in care and also strategies forimplementing the Rights of the Child in the municipalities. The results of the different projects werediscussed in multinational break-out rooms in a world café model.

Ett samarbete för en samverkan: mellan aktörer från Socialtjänsten, Arbetsförmedlingen och Folkuniversitetet(SFI) i Varberg2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Ungdomars delaktighet inom tvångsvården: En kvalitativ analys av ungdomars delaktighet inom tvångsvård utifrån behandlingsassistentens perspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Gemenskap och utveckling på kulturskolan: En studie i empowerment2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In social pedagogy, empowerment is used as a tool for uplifting and strengthening the individual in relation to societal power structures, so that the individual herself can influence her own context in a positive direction. Empowerment is of great importance with regards to inclusion in socially deprived areas. Background: In a society with growing disparities, it is important for young people to be engaged in meaningful activities and communities. The study discusses, among other things, the problem that the School of Culture has to deal with when it comes to making education more accessible and inclusive for students facing social exclusion. This study highlights the Swedish School of Culture's role as a creator of meaning and a place for safe meetings between adults and children, especially in socially deprived areas.

The aim of the present work is to investigate the effect that a place at the School of Culture can have on individuals, regarding self esteem and sense of coherence. This is done partly by examining how empowerment is used as a teaching method at the school. The theoretical framework is made up of a number of theoretical concepts, of which the main concepts are empowerment and SOC (sense of coherence). Method: Qualitative, structured interviews and open, participatory observations. Results: The Swedish School of Culture plays an important role for inclusion of students with an immigrant background. The teachers would like to have a more clear pedagogical discussion.
