    Abstract [en]

Background: Research shows that persons from the Middle East are at higher risk to develop type 2 diabetes which increases the risk of diabetic complications and early death. Both illness perception and self care are significant factors for the disease process. The diabetes nurse needs to search for knowledge of illness perception thus they have a central role in strengthening the individuals' ability to handle treatment, symptoms, emotional, cognitive and physical consequences as well as lifestyle changes.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate illness perception of type 2 diabetes among persons from The Middle East living in Sweden.

Method: A descriptive analysis of a pilot study was conducted in the region of VästraGötaland during spring 2019. 27 individuals answered the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire about their illness perception of type 2 diabetes.

Results: The participants perceived type 2 diabetes to be a chronic disease and reported a very high degree of coherence of the disease. They also perceived that type 2 diabetes can be controlled by both treatment and themselves to a very high degree and to a relatively high degree. Trust in treatment was greater than in their own control. The study shows a significant difference in coherence of type 2 diabetes between women and men in the study, where women experienced a higher degree of coherence than men. Identity and consequences were the dimensions of illness perception with the lowest median.

Conclusion: Illness perception affects the degree of self care and disease progress. The results can be used to give an increased understanding of illness perception of type 2 diabetes among persons from the Middle East living in Sweden.

A study of process planning for metal cutting2009Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Process planning as a function for competitiveness is often neglected. However, as an intermediary between product development and manufacturing, it holds a key function in transforming product specifications and requirements into a producible process plan. Demands and requirements should be met concurrently as manufacturing costs and lead times are minimised. The focus of this thesis is the act of process planning, where the use of better methodologies, computer-aids and performance measurements are essential parts. Since process planning has the function of transforming demands and requirements, changing customer and regulative requirements are vital to regard. Since environmentally benign products and production increases in importance, the research presented in this thesis includes a CNC machining cost model, which relates machining costs to energy consumption.  The presented results in this thesis are based on quantitative and qualitative studies in the metal working industry.

This thesis has contributed to an enhanced understanding of process planning to achieve better performance and important areas for improvements. Despite a 50 year history of computerised process planning aids, few of these are used in the industry, where manual process planning activities are more common. Process planning aids should be developed around the process planner so that non-value adding activities, such as information management and documentation are minimised in order to allow more resources for value adding activities, such as decision making. This thesis presents a study of systematic process planning in relation to perceived efficiency. This correlation could however not be verified, which opens up for further studies of other possible explanations for process planning efficiency. Process planning improvements in the industry are difficult to make, since there is little focus on process planning activities and limited knowledge about actual performance hereof. This means that measures taken regarding process planning development are difficult to verify.

Methods for improving performance of process planning for CNC machining: an approach based on surveys and analytical models2012Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Process planning as an enabler of competiveness is often overlooked, but being one of the principal function in the product realisation flow it holds a key role by combining both product and production requirements into a production concept with respect to the current manufacturing system. As such the capability of process planning to a large extent dictates production cost, lead times, product quality etc. With the introduction of new demands on production, such as environmental impact and process capability, process planning must be able to manage these demands effectively. Accordingly, it is vital to study the effects that up-coming demands have on the act of process planning. The research methods employed in this work include surveys (questionnaires and interviews), industrial case studies and experiments to provide data for models developed. The main finding of this research is that there is a lack of quantified process planning performance knowledge in the industry, which leads to verification problems as to whether changes that are made render anticipated effects. Results of surveys also indicated a low level of digitalisation of product data and limited use of computer aids (CAM, feature-based CAM and PLM) in Swedish industry based on 144 companies' response. A concept to improve process planning performance through operation classification based on process capability indices (Cp/Cpk) was suggested. The role of process planning in designing cost efficient and energy efficient machining operations has been maintained throughout the thesis by showing how tool selection and machining parameters selection influences the possibilities to achieve these objectives. This work has also showed that no inherent contradictions appear to exist between achieving cost efficient and energy efficient machining operations. This thesis has contributed to an enhanced understanding of how process planning improvements can be achieved through a holistic perspective of the process planning function, where both technical and methodological aids are included. It is however essential to understand the current situation of the process planning organisation, its internal/external relations, level of digitalisation, competency level etc. before major changes of the process planning function are undertaken in order to be successful.

CNC machining process planning productivity – a qualitative survey2009In: Proceedings of The International 3'rd Swedish Production Symposium, SPS 09, 2009, p. 228-235Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Process planning is the link between design and manufacturing and consequently an important function, since it influences many of the company objectives. However, many companies have little knowledge about their process planning function and the efficiency is thus not optimal. The paper focuses on the automation level of process planning as a mean to improve process planning efficiency. Six CNC machining companies was interviewed and accordingly analysed through a five dimensional automation level model to understand their process planning work. The main findings are that the automation level is low and concurrent engineering is lacking in many of the investigated companies.

Energy and Cost Efficiency in CNC Machining from a Process Planning Perspective2011In: 9th Global Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing: Sustainable Manufacturing –Shaping Global Value Creation / [ed] Günther Seliger, 2011, p. 383-389Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The role of process planning as an enabler for cost efficient and environmentally benign CNC machining is investigated in the paper. Specific energy is used as the principal indicator of energy efficient machining and different methods to calculate and estimate this is exemplified and discussed. The interrelation between process planning decisions and production outcome is sketched and process capability can be considered as one factor of green machining. A correlation between total machining cost and total energy use was shown for an experimental case. However, to generalise conclusions, the importance of having reliable data during process planning to make effective decisions should not be underestimated.

Process planning for cnc machining of swedish subcontractors: A web survey2014In: Procedia CIRP, ISSN 2212-8271, E-ISSN 2212-8271, Vol. 17, p. 732-737Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Process planning of CNC machining is critical to ensure cost, time and quality parameters of manufacturing operations. At the heart of process planning is, typically the process planner, who must make a multitude of decisions regarding machines, cutting strategies, tools and process parameters etc. Today there are a number of different tools and methods available to aid the process planner. This paper explores today’s industrial use of some of these aids and outlinespotential underlying reasons for the current state. The empirical data is based on a questionnaire survey of Swedish CNC machining sub-contractors. The main conclusion is that despite a long history of development of various aids (CAD/CAM, PLM standards etc.) there is still a large proportion of the industry, which has not yet adopted these aids. By the responding companies 32% do not use any CAM system and only 2% use a PLM system. On the other side of the spectrum is a group of 25% that uses CAM in 75% or more of their planned products. The learning from this survey can be used to better understand the industrial needs and focus research and development efforts.

Production preparation methodology in Swedish metal working industry - a State of the Art investigation2008In: Swedish Production Symposium, Stockholm 18-20 November 2008. Proceedings: The Swedish Production Academy's annual conference / [ed] Bengt Lindberg och Johan Stahre, Stockholm: The Swedish Production Academy , 2008, p. 443-450Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents a brief state of the art in the Swedish metal working industry regarding the production preparation process for the machine centre. The article is based on a relationship model from which a questionnaire was developed. The model incorporates the perceived preparation process efficiency, the amount of systematic preparation work, in relation to the companies’ premises as possible causes. The investigation is based on a general hypothesis that a more systematic approach in the preparation process leads to higher preparation process efficiency. This hypothesis was supplemented by two more hypotheses and additional analyses to create an understanding of the situation. The main finding in this investigation is that there appear to be no relationship between increased  ystematic preparation work and perception of higher preparation efficiency. The investigation also indicates that many metal working companies have little knowledge about the performance of their preparation process and that there is an efficiency improvement potential of nearly 30%.

Energy and cost efficiency in CNC machining2009In: The 7th CIRP Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing: Chennai, India, December 2-4, 2009., 2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

General cost for CNC machining and the associated energy cost are set in the context of making economic and environmental improvements. This creates an incentive for manufacturing companies to investigate the energy efficiency of manufacturing processes. The paper presents a costing model, based on machining experiments. The model is accompanied with an industry based case to estimate the cost savings. The results show that substantial cost savings with respect to energy efficiency is unlikely, since energy costs in CNC machining comprises a small cost component. However significant cost savings can be achieved if the production output is increased as a consequence from higher material removal rates due to optimised machining parameters.

Impact of energy efficiency on computernumerically controlled machining2010In: Proceedings of the Institution of mechanical engineers. Part B, journal of engineering manufacture, ISSN 0954-4054, E-ISSN 2041-2975, Vol. 224, no B4, p. 531-541Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Increasing environmental demands from governmental bodies and customers stress the importance of companies improving their environmental performance. The research presented here shows that productivity and cost efficiency improvements can be achieved alongside energy savings in a computer numerically controlled machining environment. This improves the profitability of the companies, but also leads them towards more sustainable and environmentally aware manufacturing; the relationship between machining parameters, machining costs, and energy consumption is evaluated. From this perspective, it is important that production planners etc. understand the methodological possibilities for improvements in cost and energy efficiency. The current research is based on a machining cost model and experiments where energy consumption and tool wear were monitored.

Trygghet som en dimension av social hållbarhet: En kvantitativ studie om ungdomars upplevelse om det offentliga rummet2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Social sustainability is a multidimensional concept in which safety is one of the dimensions, and is an important factor in creating a good quality of life. The public space is a key factor in a healthy and well-functioning city. A good environment is a source for motivating citizens to better health and wellness. Public space also has a great impact on safety, good urban planning is essential to create a good environment to live in. High level of safety also creates the conditions for achieving socially sustainable development.

The driving forces behind this study is that the public space is an important place where everybody will be welcomed and feel safe. The public space creates the opportunity for social relations, exchange of knowledge and constitute an important function in society. The publicspace should protect and promote the citizen, and the citizen must take care and show respect for the public space. Thus, this study aims to investigate young people's experience of publicspace in relation to social sustainability and safety.

The method used in the study is a quantitative approach, questionnaires have been distributed to high school students in Stenungssund. The survey ended with the possibility for respondents to mark on a map of Stenungsund the places they feel secure, insecure and like.

The results of the study show that young people in Stenungsund generally feel safe in public spaces. However, there are differences between how girls and boys experience safety. Boys feel increasingly confident than girls do. Students in different grades also tend to experience safety differently. The markings on the map thus showed a common understanding of what places are experienced as both secure, insecure and liked.

    Abstract [en]

Land development agreement is an agreement for the implementation of a detailed plan that regulates the financial and practical issues required for implementation. The parties involved are the municipality, as a planning authority, and a private property owner who wishes to develop their property, a developer. The Contract Act and the Freedom of Contract are basically at hand, but the contents of the development agreement are regulated to some extent in the Planning and Building Act. The municipality as an authority must also relate to the public law, such as the Local Government Act, the Public Procurement Act and the EU state aid rules.

The purpose of the study is to investigate to what extent, and with what methods, the municipalities are working on monitoring commitments in development contracts. Material has since been collected through surveys to all of Sweden's municipalities and in-depth interviews with two selected municipalities.

80 replies were received on the questionnaires. It showed that 68.8% did not consider themselves to have a routine for general follow-up of commitments in land development contracts. The majority of those who considered themselves to have a routine stated "project leader follows up" or "continuous follow-up" as the current routine. On specific issues concerning follow-up of property formation and financial security, the municipalities considered to a greater extent routine for follow-up. Real estate development stated that the municipalities were able to secure by applying for a settlement themselves in cases where it was a municipal matter. Financial security ensures the municipalities primarily by requiring security before signing contracts, or the project manager is responsible for the follow-up.

With detailed development plans where the property owners build and maintain the publically accessible places, some municipalities felt that there was more to follow up, some that less follow-up takes place.

The two interviewed municipalities described how the project manager's routine for follow-up can work and that they both work actively with follow-up.

The conclusion is that some municipalities are actively working on follow-up of commitments, but that there are a lot of shortcomings. Some municipalities do not seem to work actively with the follow-up. Among these municipalities are many of those who write zero or very few agreements annually, but also several municipalities that write many agreements annually.

Konstruktionsförslag på takförsedd blisk för militära jetmotorfläktar2009Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Organisationsförändring med arbetstidsmodell: En studie i Trollhättans Stad2014Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to analyse students' sense of coherence (SOC). The differences between sex, year, course and the correlations between SOC and background variables have been examined. Antonovsky's Life Orientation Questionnaire was used to measure the students' SOC. The participants in the study were boys and girls in high school (N = 79). The students either attended traditional field of studies or music oriented studies. To analyse the differences between the variables t-test was carried out. Participants´ correlation analysis was conducted between SOC and background variables. To study which item was more important for students within SOC, averages was compared. The study found differences between the sexes, which is also supported by previous research. The result demonstrated higher levels of SOC in year 8 compared with year 9 and in traditional field of studies as against music oriented studies. These results are discussed within the context of previous research. A correlation between SOC and well-being in education was also found, which has also been established in former studies. The items most valued by the students showed that they were rarely treated unjustly, rarely situated in a unfamiliar situation and that they so far had experienced their lives to contain goals and meaning.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The recovery voltage is the voltage that occur when the transition resistor in the tap-changer leaves its previous position during an operation cycle. The amplitude of the recovery voltage depends on the leakage inductance.

If the leakage inductance is unknown, the recovery voltage can instead be calculated using a FEM-program called ACE (internal ABB-program) in conjunction with Mathcad. First, the reactances between the windings are calculated in per unit (p.u) using ACE and they depend on the winding layout. It is time consuming to use ACE and Mathcad and the task has been to investigate the parameters that affects the recovery voltage and to develop a simplified calculation of it.

Through simulation using ACE of a number of different winding layouts one soon comes to the conclusion that there are simply too many parameters affecting the reactances. Although the simplified calculations that despite this has been developed, they soon prove to be too rough to be useful. Mathcad is even more complex with heavy calculations that are not easy to grasp.

However, this thesis has given more knowledge about the way the reactances are affected by the geometry of the windings, even though it was not possible to in a reasonable way simplify the calculation of ACE and Mathcad.

Beredningsarbete på Galtö med undersökning av miljöaspekter vid ombyggnad av distributionsnät2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with the practices of processing work. The work is being performed with TROLK El & Tele AB and is ordered by Ellevio AB. The area that the work is carried out at is Galtö in Tanum. The area includes about 10 km cable installation, 4 substations and 5 satellite substations and three low voltage areas where the grid are going to be rebuilt. Ellevio AB has invested in this project as they want to weather proof and ensure a high quality of the power delivery. The preparatory work that is presented as a proposal TROLK can continue to work with and apply for the relevant permits. These permits have been accounted for when this work has been prepared. The existing overhead line will be dismantled when the new grid has been connected. The overhead line is approximately 5.2 km long and includes nine pole mounted transformers. The work is based on the project documents that Ellevio has provided, though some changes have been made where necessary.

The thesis also identifies the environmental aspects arising from the dismantling of an overhead power grid and investigates alternative solutions to reduce the environmental impact. When TROLK are working with projects commissioned by Ellevio they are using the environmental plan handed by Ellevio. The environmental plan have been studied and compared with other actors' environmental plans in order to identify potential improvements. The study identified that the greatest environmental aspects is the hazardous waste of creosote impregnated power poles and PCB-contaminated oil. No major improvements in the waste management has been. Focus has then been to examine options to replace the hazardous materials for new installations. It has been found several different options to the creosote power pole that all have different effects on the environment and there are therefore no obvious alternative. PCB-contaminated oil are currently not allowed in the grid but as it means a big expense to replace dispensations has been distributed to the owners of the power grid until it has been rebuilt.

    Abstract [en]

In the last couple of years, the evolution of plug-in electric cars has contributed to an increasing need of well-built charging infrastructure. This does not only require that the fair amount of charging stations needs to match the increasing demand, but the growing amount of charging station could also affect the power quality in the grid itself due to the technology used today.

The objective of the first part of the project was to deliver a complete installation plan and project basis of two AC charging stations for electric vehicles, planned in the city of Kungälv. The second part of the project was focused on studying the effects of DC fast charging of electric vehicles, with power quality in mind. This study was based on readings obtained from measuring the power quality at an existing DC fast charging station in Kungälv, as well as available publications within the area of the subject. The project planning was conducted in regards to Swedish standards and regulations, as well as to the instructions and expectations of the client, Kungälv Energi. The result was compiled and handed over to the client during the final part of the project. The resulting document contained information regarding installation, material and placement as well as approximate cost calculations.

The power quality study was carried out on a currently installed fast charging station located in the city of Kungälv, using power quality measuring instruments provided by Kungälv Energi and Metrum Sweden AB. The result was a power quality report, compiled according to Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate, where all requirements concerning power quality were met. The data was also analyzed manually, to further investigate the effects of DC fast charging. The study shows no immediate signs of negative impact of the power quality in the nearby grid caused by the fast charging stations within the project. There were signs of harmonics caused by the charging stations, but the presence was considered low. The usage frequency is however a major factor when investigating the power quality affection of the charging station. This results in a conclusion that is not generally applicable.

Nätplan för fördelningsstation M5 Hålta2018Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the area of Tjuvkil on the west coast, about 16 kilometers west of Kungälv city, a new residential area is about to be planned for about 140 new houses and holiday houses turned into permanent houses. A grid plan will therefore be made to investigate if there are any flaws to consider for the 10 kV-net, before and after the introduction which the new load will cause on behalf of the houses, plus extra space for the installation of an amount of charging posts.

The purpose of this thesis is to compile the grid plan which will make the groundwork for the power distribution grid under the M5 transformer Hålta, which contains the areas for the new settlement. Backed up by the software dpPower this work will point out the flaws such as thin cables where large load currents and voltage drop occur, and also the statistics for interruption for the five outgoing lines from M5. This work also shows the status for the transformer in Hålta and how the surrounding grids status will be affected during their backup of emergency power for the M5. This work shows the grid status in the 4 steps as present status, with new load, emergency power and solutions.

The thesis's evaluation of M5 Hålta will result in a suggested change of cable for the line L501 to Tjuvkil, which will decrease voltage drop and lower load current to avoid interruptions on the grid. Emergency power is lacking for a large-scale consumer and can be fixed with a looped feeding instead of a single line feeding on line L503. The transformer M5 in Hålta is already heavy loaded and in need to be replaced by a larger transformer later on. The thesis gives a suggestion on how to connect the adjacent transformers M1, M4 and M6 for emergency power.

Utan utevistelsen som alternativ hade vi kunnat packa ihop: några förskollärares resonemang kring beslut om utevistelse2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

I Lpfö 98 rev.

    Abstract [en]

Background: As the population is getting older, the number of people with dementia is steadily increasing. This places great demands on nursing staff, both in the treatment and care of these persons. Instead of only focusing on the diagnosis and its symptoms, is important to ensure the individual needs. Aim: The aim of this study was to elucidate diagnosed person's experiences of living with dementia. Method: Ten qualitative articles were analyzed. The analysis resulted in four themes and twelve sub themes.

Results: The result showed that family, relatives and friends are playing an important role in the quality of life for persons with dementia. Difficulties arose because of the symptoms of the disease, which could lead to social isolation. It was considered paramount to still be able to perform meaningful activities. On the other side the result showed, that both people and the environment were considered as impedimental factors, leading to feelings of lost dignity. The diagnosis could be met through acceptance or denial. This created different types of strategies in daily life. Many times fears arose about the future and the fear of getting worse was often greater than the fear of death. Conclusion: Dementia entails many difficulties and challenges, both for the person with dementia and the surrounding people. It's necessary to adapt both environment and treatment, so that person with dementia can continue to live a normal life as possible. We can achieve this by offer support and help, both physically and psychologically, without offend or cause distress.

TALKMAP: en kommunikationsmodell för bättre ledarskap?2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was primarily to seek knowledge about how leaders using the Talkmap method, feel that their attitude and leadership was affected. The study used symbolic interactionism, communication theory, and some leadership theories, to understand and interpret the respondents' different experiences. This study is qualitative with a hermeneutic approach, and the interpretations are based on respondents' experiences of Talkmap. The study used an abductive approach when analyzing the seven semi-structured interviews.

The result of the study showed that all respondents felt they had developed their abilities in treatment. They used tools and models in Talkmap, which gave them knowledge of how people like to reflect themselves in each other. This knowledge could be used in interpersonal meetings. One important aspects given by the respondents was that they now felt less stress, since they could control development of conversation. They also felt that the emphasis of the course was on optimism and positivity, which led to the fact that they often reflected on their leadership and how to improve as leaders. The essay concluded that good treatment always can evolve, and by participating in Talkmap the leadership could develop by gaining more tools

Pedagogers syn på samspelet vid matsituationen i förskolan2008Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

    Background

Working in primary care with chronic leg ulcers is both time-consuming and difficult. There is a large category of patients with leg ulcers, that is expected to increase in a number of years, and many of them will probably come to a district nurse for help.

    Aim

The aim of this study was to describe the district nurses' experiences of caring for patients with chronic leg ulcers in primary care.

    Method

The approach was qualitative. The study was done with a phenomenological life-world approach. Seven district nurses working in primary care were interviewed. The phenomenological perspective focuses on the respondents’ own life-world and has openness to the interviewee's own experiences. The phenomenon we wanted to study was the district nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with chronic leg ulcers.

    Results

In the study it emerges that district nurses feel that it is fun to work with this patient category, although the workload can sometimes feel heavy. There are often many long meetings, for a long period of time, and a relationship evolves between the district nurse and the patient. The nurses feel they have a different and deeper relationship with these patients and they experience the emergence of an unusual friendship.

    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this study was to describe the attitudes against abused women. A literature review was used in this study. Information was collected from the literature and articles written about the subject and brought together and then critical analysed. To help with the organisation structure we used Ida Jean Orlando's theory as a theoretical framework. Our findings indicate that the nurses had a lack of acknowledgment about the women's situations and needed education about their situations. Other findings indicate that the nurses also were afraid to humiliate the women, by asking them questions abut the abuse. But the results showed that the women wanted to be asked about domestic violence, even if it should raised unpleasant memories or feelings

    Abstract [sv]

Föräldrarnas syn på barns fria lek: "Har ni bara lekt idag?"2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund:

    Abstract [en]

Background: Considering the increasing requirements and needs facing primary health care, the aspiration to use nurses as care providers has increased. This is done to improve the availability, effectiveness, and to dispense the available resources.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to illuminate the patient's experiences of meeting nurses as care providers in primary health care.

Method: Six qualitative, three quantitative, and one mixed method articles were analyzed to create a literature review.

Results: Generally, the patients were satisfied with meeting nurses as care providers in primary health care. The result showed that the patients described relationship, trust, participation, and communication with nurses as significant aspects to feel secure. That the nurses made time available, as well as were easy to contact, were also aspects that contributed to the patients feeling secure. Uncertainties regarding the nurse's role, competence, and not being able to choose level of care were aspects that affected the insecurity.

Conclusion: Nurses in primary health care have big opportunities to develop the meeting in a way that the patient feels secure in health care. Most patients experience great satisfaction with care provided by nurses. Considering the above facts, it seems possible to develop health care led by nurses.

Challenges to Improve Inter-Professional Care and Service Collaboration for People Living With Psychiatric Disabilities in Ordinary Housing.2016In: Quality Management in Health Care, ISSN 1063-8628, E-ISSN 1550-5154, Vol. 25, no 1, p. 44-52Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe health care- and social service professionals' experiences of a quality-improvement program implemented in the south of Sweden. The focus of the program was to develop inter-professional collaboration to improve care and service to people with psychiatric disabilities in ordinary housing. Focus group interviews and a thematic analysis were used. The result was captured as themes along steps in process. (I) Entering the quality-improvement program: Lack of information about the program, The challenge of getting started, and Approaching the resources reluctantly. (II) Doing the practice-based improvement work: Facing unprepared workplaces, and Doing twice the work. (III) Looking back-evaluation over 1 year: Balancing theoretical knowledge with practical training, and Considering profound knowledge as an integral part of work. The improvement process in clinical practice was found to be both time and energy consuming, yet worth the effort. The findings also indicate that collaboration across organizational boundaries was broadened, and the care and service delivery were improved.

    Abstract [sv]

Young adults with mild intellectual disability and their thoughts about the own home was investigated and is described in this thesis. A qualitative research method was used, and the respondents thoughts about where and how to live were gathered through interviews. The investigation is based on the theoretical concept of normality, identity and quality of life since these aspects are important components of the individual's positive experiences of their homelife. People with disabilities has rights goverened by law, but in this thesis the individuals subjective experiences, feelings and wishes are described. The importance of the individual\2019s rights to make their own decisions, feeling of pericipation and personal security was found to be important factors for a satisfying living environment. The right balance between getting the help you need and want, and still experience the power too make your own decisions determines the level of satisfaction. The values and norms from childhood can influence what is seen as an optimal living-environment and what makes a home.

Leasing nu och i framtiden: Attityder till de nyaredovisningsreglerna för leasing2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Discussion on the accounting treatment of leases has been going on for many years. The current standard, IAS 17 has criticized because many companies are able to classify their leases as operational leasing agreements in order not to reflect assets and liabilities on the balance sheets. IASB and FASB working together to amend the standard for lease accounting and they involve various groups of stakeholders and individuals by submitting comment letters. The first proposal for the amendment of the standard was Exposure Draft 2010/9. The proposal received so many comments which resulted a revised proposal that came out in May 2013 and called Exposure Draft 2013/6.

The aim of this study was to examine the attitudes of different groups (academics, preparers, users, the accounting profession, national regulators and other international organizations) in Europe to the new proposal of Exposure Draft 2013/6 -Leasing, regarding questions relating to lease accounting in lessee and classification. Do they think that the new proposal solve the problems concerning classification and financial statements of leasing, which is found in the current international accounting standard (IAS 17) or just create new problems. We have also investigated in which extend these groups participated with comments in the comment letters.

The study is a qualitative survey where we analyzed and interpreted the comments and attitudes in the comment letters to the new proposal. In the theoretical frame addressed how research is conducted to develop new standards, how and to what extent the different groups involved in this by participating in the comment letters and the criticism leveled against the new proposal concerning classification and accounting. The results of the study are based on 151 comment letters sent to the IASB/FASB. The analysis has been made by using the analysis model in section 3.9 and the empirical results have been applied to the theoretical frame of reference.

Analysis showed that there are no academics who participated in the comment letters. The group that has commented most on the comment letters have proved to be the pre-parers and this is in line with what previous research has shown. The majority of all groups do not agree with the new proposal. The attitude to the proposal is negative in terms of accounting in lessee and classification.

Boundaries as mechanisms for learning in emergency exercises with students from emergency service organisations2016In: Journal of Vocational Education and Training, ISSN 1363-6820, E-ISSN 1747-5090, Vol. 68, no 2, p. 245-262Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

To prepare emergency response organisations for collaborative work in unpredictable and dynamic situations, various types of exercises are widely used. Still, our knowledge of collaboration exercises with emergency response students is limited. This study aimed to contribute to this field by exploring boundaries that emerged between collaborating organisations in exercise activities and how these boundaries could be understood for learning. Drawing on the Akkerman and Bakker framework of boundaries as learning mechanisms, this study explored an exercise, including full-scale scenarios and seminars with students from the police, ambulance and rescue services education in Sweden. Thematic analysis of interviews and observations illustrated boundaries that emerged regarding vocabulary, prioritisation, roles, knowledge gaps and overlapping responsibilities across organisations. Rather than dissolving boundaries, this article suggests that boundaries can be utilised in exercises to support the students to contextualise their knowledge in relation to the demands of collaborative work. The concepts boundary work and boundary awareness were suggested to capture more generally the dynamics of learning in exercise contexts.

In case of emergency: Collaboration exercises at the boundaries between emergency service organizations2016Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Due to the emergent and dynamic nature of incidents, the complexity of emergency work is often referred to as a challenge for learning. Another recurrent challenge in emergency work is that of collaboration at and across established organizational boundaries involving actors with specific types of expertise who are operating under different regulations and responsibilities. In addition, training emergency service organizations in collaboration remains a challenge. In light of the difficulties and shortcomings that have been identified in major incident responses, the need for exercises for developing and maintaining collaborative response effectiveness prior to the next incident is often highlighted. The overall aim of this thesis is to understand how full-scale exercises can provide conditions for developing inter-organizational collaboration between the police, ambulance and rescue services at the incident site. Learning activities that carry the potential to support and develop collaborative capacity, and how the alignment of distributed expertise can be trained for, were of particular interest. Interviews with participants in eight full-scale exercises with professionals and interviews and observations of one exercise with senior-level students in Sweden served as the empirical base.Central concepts from Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) provided theoretical tools to explore the exercises and understand boundaries between organizations with a wider, systemic approach. The empirical studies show that the participants understood full-scale exercises to be valuable opportunities for becoming involved in response work, making decisions, and acting and interacting in uncertain situations and realistic environments. As in real-life responses, exercises are characterized by the stabilization and confirmation of everyday routines on the one hand, and by improvisation and change on the other hand. The studies also show that exercises tend to focus on specific scenarios,intra-organizational routines, and leadership positions. Infrequent exercises inwhich the participants were only trained in a limited role were perceived to be in adequate for developing preparedness and collaboration. However, the analysis suggested that the way in which exercises were organized and performed had implications for how participants were trained in collaboration.Realizing the potential of boundaries as resources for learning in exercises depends on how boundaries are explicated and approached. Thus, rather than striving to ignore or eliminate boundaries in exercises, the studies illustrated the learning value of explicitly reflecting on the multiple understandings around boundaries. The studies demonstrated that much of the work at an incident site takes place around negotiations. Collaboration at the incident site was not only aquestion about boundary crossing; operational tasks may not always be aligned and have to be prioritized and sequenced. The exercises comprised work situations in which no single motive could explain or determine the collaboration, due to different types of expertise, primary responsibilities and needs forinformation. These factors were understood in terms of the concepts of boundarywork and boundary awareness. These concepts point at a more divergent understanding of collaboration that reaches beyond striving to create mutual understanding between organizations in learning activities. Differences between organizations, such as in terminology, time horizons, priorities, leadership structures, understandings of safety and how intra-organizational decisions and actions could impact the collaborating organizations' work, were central triggers for discussion and negotiation. These differences required explanations in order to make the actions and decisions of one organization understandable and justifiable to another, based on organizational mandates and types of expertise.Giving emergency services the opportunity to work together, to develop an awareness of their expectations of each other in various situations, to use and interpret their own and others' terminologies, and to identify internal hierarchies and motives for prioritizations was essential dimensions of exercises

    Abstract [en]

Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify what is practiced during collaboration exercises and possible facilitators for inter-organisational collaboration.

Design/methodology/approach Interviews with 23 participants from four exercises in Sweden were carried out during autumn 2011. Interview data were subjected to qualitative content analysis.

Findings Findings indicate that the exercises tend to focus on intra-organisational routines and skills, rather than developing collaboration capacities. What the participants practiced depended on roles and order of arrival at the exercise. Exercises contributed to practicing leadership roles, which was considered essential since crises are unpredictable and require inter-organisational decision-making.

Originality/value The results of this study indicate that the ability to identify boundary objects, such as injured/patients, was found to be important in order for collaboration to occur. Furthermore, lessons learned from exercises could benefit from inter-organisational evaluation. By introducing and reinforcing certain elements and distinct aims of the exercise, the proactive function of collaboration exercises can be clarified.

    Abstract [en]

Collaboration in emergency work is challenging on many levels. The unforeseen and temporary nature of incidents presents basic challenges. Another important challenge is boundaries between specialized and autonomous emergency service organizations. We need to know more about how exercises are performed to increase the individuals and organizations preparedness for future joint response work. The aim of this study was to explore how boundary work is carried out at the incident site during exercises, and how boundary awareness is developed based on this boundary work. The analytic focus was on how boundaries were identified, negotiated and managed in the participants work. Empirically, full-scale exercises involving police, ambulance and rescue services and with repetition of practical scenarios and joint-reflection seminars are studied. Much of the work in the exercises was performed within distinct areas of expertise, in accordance with concrete routines, skills and responsibilities. Boundary work was often organized in the form of distribution of labour or creating chains of actions. The exercises shed light on challenges related to other aspects of emergency response, such as a lack of resources, diverging primary responsibilities, time-criticality and hazardous environments. The design allowed participants to explicate boundaries, test and discuss alternative solutions, and to visualize the effects of different solutions as the scenarios were repeated. The boundaries that were identified were often of institutional character, and were also related to the specific scenarios and to the actions taken in the activities. By integrating real-life experiences of collaborative work in the exercise, the exercise gained a certain meaning that was essential for the participants to develop boundary awareness.

En lärstudie i teknik på förskola2011Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund:

    Abstract [en]

    Background:

Studies show that sleep problems are common and the prevalence is increasing. Early detection and adequate help is important. Sleep school with cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) demonstrates good long-term effect, but few people with sleep problems gain access to these sleep schools. District nurses in primary care have the opportunity to provide support for sleep problems. Through increased knowledge of strategies that promote good sleep gives the district nurse better opportunities to support people with sleep problems. Aim: To describe what strategies people use to improve sleep after completing the sleep school. Method: The study has a qualitative approach in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten informants. The interview material were analysed by using a qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis revealed three categories and eight subcategories which form the result of this study. Manages thoughts in a new way included three subcategories: to reform negative thoughts, to accept ones sleep and to dare reduce the sedatives. Exercising activities that promote sleep included two subcategories: to increase their physical activity and to perform relaxation exercises. Adapts the environment to promote sleep included three subcategories: to reduce sleep disturbing items, to adapt bedroom environment and to reduce caffeine intake and alcohol. Conclusion: The study shows that sleep school with CBT, according to the informants, gave the knowledge and tools to find strategies that helped them sleep better and feel more satisfied with their sleep. Increased training for primary care district nurses in sleep knowledge and CBT, creates better conditions for early and effective intervention

Social kompetens i ett föränderligt samhälle2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
