"Jag kan inte bära din sorg och jag kan inte bära din förtvivlan men vi kan hjälpas åt": En socialpedagogisk studie om diakoners upplevelser av sitt arbete inom Svenska kyrkan2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Integration is a recent and expanding social phenomenon. In the last ten years the number of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people has increased dramatically. During 2014, Sweden received 81 000 people from other countries, people that was trying to escape war and persecution. 7049 of those people were children under eighteen, unaccompanied by a parent or legal guardian, known as unaccompanied minors. Unaccompanied children and young people constitute a particularly vulnerable group in society. Many of them have traumatic experiences of war, violence, persecution, abuse, poverty, and some have been living in difficult family circumstances. They flee from their country of origin, separated from parents, family, language, culture and lifestyles which can increase risks of being exposed to vulnerable situations. As Swedish authorities do not have any formal responsibility for social integration, some non-profit operators takes initiative for that matter. A non-profit actor is an association run by and for unaccompanied youth in Sweden. In view of the above mentioned problem area, the study aims to examine how associations as a social arena can be a way into society for unaccompanied youths. The study aims to investigate a non-profit association's work to facilitate the integration of unaccompanied young people. A qualitative approach has been chosen by using semi-structured interviews with board members of the association to reach an understanding of how the association can create opportunities for unaccompanied young people to integrate into society. The theoretical basis emanates from social network theory which is based on general systems theory and key concepts such as identity, community, social support and integration are used. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis based on previous research and the study's theoretical basis.

Results show that the association can be both a security-generating community and an exchange of knowledge that will strengthen the opportunities for young people to integrate into society. One disadvantage of the association's work that has been evident in the results is that the security is within the association may tend to create a comfort zone within, which young people can get caught in.

    Abstract [en]

    Background:

In the late 1990s, honourrelated violence and oppression came to be considered as a new kind of social problem in Sweden. After several high-profile murders of young women of foreign descent, executed by close family members in consultation, where the motive was connected with honour, the result was major political initiatives. The mission was to counter, prevent and disseminate knowledge of the phenomenon. The debate that started was heated and the struggle for understanding and explanation of honourrelated violence and killings carried out both in the public opinion and in a research context. In Sweden, as well as internationally, culture and ethnicity by some researchers considered the main factors behind the problem. Other researchers believe that the main explanation is a universal gender hierarchy. A more dynamic approach has emerged which looks more on intersections between different influencing factors such as gender, culture/ ethnicity, class, migration, and socio-economic conditions. This tug of war on the understanding on honourrelated violence and oppression continues, and circuits to some extent always about culture, ethnicity and gender. The talk about knowledge and expertise has consistently been in focus and it has led me to shine a light on the relationship between knowledge and power linked to political governance.

    Aim:

The aim is, through a discourse analytical reading of educational materials on honourrelated violence and oppression, highlight how knowledge is used to govern and to exercise power within the Swedish public policies on honourrelated violence and oppression. The aim is also to highlight the possible impact it can have on social practice

    Method:

In this study I use a discourse analytical approach inspired by Michael Foucault´s discussion of discourses and the possibility conditions and exclusion mechanisms that delimit a discourse. I also use the concepts of power-knowledge, subject position and governance in my analysis. The selection of text materials come from public authorities educational and knowledge materials on the subject.

    Result:

The conclusion is that it clearly emerges that knowledge governance is a distinct medium but also a goal of public policy on honourrelated violence and oppression according to Foucault´s view of power and knowledge as inseparable. Three discourses on honourrelated violence and oppression appears in the material; Discourse of distinct and division, Free choice or forced freedom, and Take responsibility! The desired position that emerges for social service administrators in their work is as vigorous decision-maker that makes a difference.

"Vi kände oss förstådda och väl bemötta": En studie om bemötande inom familjerådgivning2011Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aim to examine parents' and professionals' views on the usage of Internet for love and sexual purposes among young people with intellectual disabilities (18-€“20 years) in Sweden. Five semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with professionals (n = 8) working on special programmes in upper secondary schools and with parents (n = 5). The interviews were analysed with thematic analysis and the theory of sexual scripts were guiding the process. The results show that the Internet is seen as a social arena with complex challenges; for love and sexuality, for sexual conduct, and for sexual risk and opportunities. Young people with intellectual disabilities are looked upon as more vulnerable than other youth. However, the result also show that parents view the risk of their adolescent of being lonely as greater than the risk of being abused or mislead. A Net-script consisting of rules is geared towards the young people with intellectual disability. Nevertheless, a change to a more flexible and nuanced Net-script is shown while the group of young persons with intellectual disabilities are seen as more heterogeneous than earlier. In-depth knowledge about parents’ and professionals’ perspectives on the Internet and sexuality is important since the young people live in a dependency situation towards their surroundings. In addition, the surroundings’ attitudes and behaviour are essential for the young peoples’ access of support and opportunities to develop their own capacity and to experience love and sexuality. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the social workers experiences about threat and violence in the workplace regarding the juvenile institutional care. We wanted to investigate how the social workers are affected by this professionally as well as in there private life. Additionally we wanted to look into what support is available for the social workers when they have been threatened or attacked at work, for example support from colleagues, work management, or other external parties and if they considered that it was sufficient. The study has been implemented with at qualitative research method where the experienced based knowledge has been done with semi structured interviews with five social workers active in juvenile institutional l care. We have later analyzed the material through a hermeneutic perspective with sense concentration as base. The purpose was to gain thorough knowledge from a few social workers experiences concerning threats and violent situations in the work environment. The result shows that most respondents felt that they partially where affected professionally from the threats and violence at work, where the result was a heighted stress level. However there were no respondents that felt that it affected their private life. The most common perception was that threats and violence is a normal occurrence at work. They all agreed that they got god support at work. The support from colleagues was what gave the most security, and that support from work management was god but lacked follow up. Concerning security education and training the respondents found it to be adequate but a few had wished for more tools in form of pepper spray to feel safer in regards to violent confrontations

    Abstract [sv]

What indicators to use when measuring services of general interest?2013In: Europe XXI, ISSN 1429-7132, Vol. 23, p. 7-28Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The services of general interest (SGI) have received increasing attention of the European Union, which considers them a key element of the European model of society. They not only play an important role in the ongoing competitiveness of the European economy, but are also essential for achieving the goal of promoting social and territorial cohesion. Their potential role in the pursuit of the objectives of European cohesion and convergence policies may be significant which calls for an appropriate measurement and analysis of territorial distribution. The indicators are assumed to be a key element in measuring and describing the SGI, however, it is necessary to make a serious reflection how such indicators should be selected. The selection of indicators can be conditioned by several factors, however, it is imperative to make a qualitative reflection on the adequacy and relevance of indicators to analyse the SGI. This reflection runs through the paper. The concept of indicators is addressed, and their strengths and weaknesses are discussed. The indicators are classified according to the role they play in the cause-effect relations in distinct territories. Three types of indicators are identified. Appraisal of indicators and review of literature render it possible to identify the most frequently used indicators and to see SGI analysis from several perspectives, thus verifying that indicators can present different meanings and relevance, based on a range of factors and the scale of analysis. Some of the uncertainties arising in the SGI territorial analysis, which can contribute to the success of the policy making process, are recognized through an example based on the ICT Telecommunication SGI sub-domain. Some procedures connected with the integration of different types of indicators are proposed in order to limit the emergent uncertainties resulting from their interpretation

Socialpedagogik i tvångsvård: professionellas syn på delaktighet och motivation inom LVM2011Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Today's labor market is constantly changing, which places new demands on the whole society, but primarily on the jobseekers and the Employment Service. For that reason, I consider it relevant to examine how the Employment Service's efforts to increase the prospects of entering the labor market looks like. What are the challenges faced employment agents in their daily work and what strategies they utilize to cope with its mission? In order for an organization such is Employment Service to develop their business, it is important to get advisers comments on possible areas of improvement. This study is based on empirical data gathered through semi-structured interviews made with four advisers who are employed on two of the employment service offices. The main conclusions that this study has generated are, that adviser's mission has become more complex with the stringent requirements of the labor market. In the same time as expectations from outside become higher, even expectations from inside of organization have become harder. This results in, that the Employment Service does not always live up to the assigned task, to the extent they and their customers want.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to illuminate and analyze how newly arrived adolescents describe their experiences of starting over in a new school, in a new land. The essay will explain and illuminate the refugee adolescents’ experiences of starting over in a new school and learn a new language and make new friends and what this challenge mean for them. The essay describes the language- and the school's impact on newly arrived students’ participation. My study is based on qualitative methods, based on interviews with six individuals who have the experience of being a newly arrived student. The analysis of the study was made with IPA (Interpretative phenomenological analysis). IPA is a combination of phenomenology and hermeneutic perspective. Theoretical premises are the socio-cultural theory and postcolonial theory. With socio-cultural theory I explain and analyze the participation and community importance for the learning process among newly arrived students. I use postcolonial theory to analyze the post-colonial order in our current school. I have found that newly arrived students are facing a difficult challenge when they start school. The participants experienced that it was difficult to make friends, learn a new language and become part of the community. The participants experienced both inclusion and exclusion in school and they have been exposed to violations, stigmatization and bullying. The school had an important role in the newly arrivals' lives, especially during the first years in Sweden because in school they meet peers and new people. Swedish language is a requirement for new arrivals so they will cope with life and get involved in school. It takes a long time for newly arrived students to be accepted in school, learn a new language and adapt to the new country.

Belonging and multidimensional self-expectations: Transition from upper secondary special programmes to working life for pupils with intellectual disabilities in Sweden2009In: La nouvelle revue de l'adaptation et de la scolarisation, ISSN 1957-0341, Vol. 48, no 4, p. 255-265Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article we review current research – some of our own and others – on the transition between school and work for young people with intellectual disabilities in Sweden. Two main paths of transition are identified. The first is an introduction to the special needs system of work and occupation within the Swedish welfare state, a continuation of the special needs programme that pupils with intellectual disabilities attend in Sweden. The second path of transition includes more complex self-expectations and belongings both in the special need system and more ordinary life and work. Both paths are discussed in relation to current research and welfare policy. Here, we draw on recent theoretical development in relation to concepts like multidimensional identifications and mixed identities in the fields of international migration and ethnic relations.

Handle with Care: Staff Experiences of Difficulties working with People with Intellectual Disabilities2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Providing care and support to people with intellectual disabilities (ID) is in several aspects a complex and challenging assignment. It could be argued that this complexity has fundamentally to do with different organizational conditions. Analysing the specfiic characteristics of experienced difficulties could generate a new understanding of the organizational prerequisites of working within intellectual disability services. This presentation examines how LSS administrators (n=70) and habilitation staff (n=40) in Sweden experience difficulties working with people with ID. Drawing upon both quantitative and qualitative data generated from a larger web survey a content analysis was used. In order to complement the qualitative analyses we also used descriptive numerical analyses. The results reveals that staff experiences of difficulties in work with people with ID could be differentiated in four typological themes; (1) Structure, (2) Profession, (3) Relations and (4) Collaboration. As shown in our presentation, experience of difficult situations in human service organizations does not necessarily correspond with work dissatisfaction or unclear goals. On the contrary, we argue that it is a fundamental aspect of professionalism to handle this plurality within a specific organizational context. The different characteristics of the organizations in our study reflect two different institutional logics. While the LSS administrators mainly operates within an administrative logic based on a regulative framework, the habilitation staff are operating within a therapeutic logic based on a cognitive framework. Consequently they have their own specific norms and rule systems, which influence when and to which extent everyday situations are experience and defined as difficult.

Risks and opportunities in new emancipatory landscapes?: On young people with intellectual disabilities, Internet use and identification processes2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Although research on young peoples identity formation processes on the Internet is a growing field, there are few studies that illustrate conditions for pupils with intellectual disabilities (ID). Recent Scandinavian studies have indicated that there is a new generation of young people with ID who has developed alternative ways of relating to issues of participation and identity. It's about how they choose to present themselves and how they navigate the various social media. By presenting themselves through descriptions of their own interests and personal characteristics instead of exposing the disability so-called alternative identities can be developed, where disability is not necessarily put in focus. Young people with ID often have different degrees of communicative constraints, which on the one hand implicates that the value of new social arenas can be of great importance. On the other hand, the use of the Internet could also be problematic in different contexts. An on-going Swedish research project aims to investigate these processes based on the perspectives of young people with ID, school staff and parents. In a pilot study based on focus group interviews we found that professionals (teachers, n=8) expressed a concern that young people will get hurt and end up in undesirable situations (such as being cheated or abused), while parents (n=5) mainly consider the Internet as a possible future venue for the development of new and on-going social relations. This paper presentation will report preliminary findings from interviews conducted with young people in upper secondary special programme for pupils with ID (n=30). The experiences of the informants will be discussed in relation to results from the pilot study and relative to a conceptual framework of social identity, participation and emancipation.

Teachers’ and parents’ views on the Internet and social media usage by pupils with intellectual disabilities2015In: Journal of Intellectual Disabilities, ISSN 1744-6295, E-ISSN 1744-6309, Vol. 19, no 1, p. 22-33Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article reports experiences from a Swedish study, discussing teachers’ and parents’ views on how young people with intellectual disabilities use the Internet and social media. Five semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with teachers (n = 8) in special programmes in upper secondary schools for pupils with intellectual disabilities and parents (n = 5) of pupils in the same form of schooling, and they were analysed with thematic analysis. Teachers more strongly emphasize a pupil’s use of the Internet for interactive purposes. Parents had expectations that the Internet could be a tool for gaining more awareness of one’s own disability and a way to meet other peer group pupils. Teachers’ and parents’ perspectives on the Internet and social media usage are important since it is imperative to show how support can be provided for young people with intellectual disabilities.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how participative perspective gets expressed in a practical activity, how the youths percept participation in a youth recreation centre and how their perception can be related to the recreation centre staffs perspective on a participative work. Our questions were:

 How does the recreation center staff describe their work from a participative perspective?

 In which way do the youths perceive themselves participated in leisure farms activities?

 Does the staffs participation perspective interact with the youths view on participation at the recreation centre, and in that case, how?

The methodological approach that was chosen for this study was the qualitative and semi-structured interviews were used in the study. The theoretical starting point was participation and empowerment. The interviews for this study were chosen to split into three parts which the first was made with the unit manager, the other with recreation leaders, and the last with the youths. The results of the study showed that participation is expressed at the recreation center but that it was different in how participation is taken in expression. Something that ties together the answer we got from the interview with the staff at the recreation centre is that they strive to work participative by making good relations with the youths. The unit manager believed that trust and good relation creates participation. The youths expressed that participation for them is when they are with and affects things

    Abstract [en]

In social pedagogy, empowerment is used as a tool for uplifting and strengthening the individual in relation to societal power structures, so that the individual herself can influence her own context in a positive direction. Empowerment is of great importance with regards to inclusion in socially deprived areas. Background: In a society with growing disparities, it is important for young people to be engaged in meaningful activities and communities. The study discusses, among other things, the problem that the School of Culture has to deal with when it comes to making education more accessible and inclusive for students facing social exclusion. This study highlights the Swedish School of Culture's role as a creator of meaning and a place for safe meetings between adults and children, especially in socially deprived areas.

The aim of the present work is to investigate the effect that a place at the School of Culture can have on individuals, regarding self esteem and sense of coherence. This is done partly by examining how empowerment is used as a teaching method at the school. The theoretical framework is made up of a number of theoretical concepts, of which the main concepts are empowerment and SOC (sense of coherence). Method: Qualitative, structured interviews and open, participatory observations. Results: The Swedish School of Culture plays an important role for inclusion of students with an immigrant background. The teachers would like to have a more clear pedagogical discussion.

Att hitta sig själv: om identitetsskapande hos ungdomar med utländsk bakgrund2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Introduction:

We have chosen to investigate how adolescents with a foreign background experience their identity building. As a theoretical frame of reference we have used the Theory of Symbolic Interactionism with George Herbert Mead and Erving Goffman as inspiration. The main concept in this essay is identity with culture and ethnicity as close entrenched concepts.

    Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to examine and to describe how adolescents with a foreign background relate to, and create their identities in different cultural contexts.

    Method:

To investigate how adolescents describe their identities we have used half-structured interviews. We chose to do a half-structured life-world interview in the form of a themed interview guide. We have interviewed six informants with the age of 16 to 20 years old that are born in Sweden by parents with a foreign background. In the analysis, we themed the empirical data for factors linked to the sense of belonging.

    Result:

The study shows that the informants develop their socio-cultural identity in relation to other people in their environment. For adolescents with a foreign background, the availability of bilingualism is an opportunity to communicate with people belonging to different cultural contexts. An important asset is being able to speak the mother tongue, it makes adolescents aware of belonging and they can identify with their parents' culture. The adolescents feel a dual cultural affiliation, as they neither feel at home in Sweden or in their parents' homeland. They also feel categorized as immigrants of the community much because of their appearance and their names. The adolescents show that they have developed a kind of hybrid identity, or a third identity, characterized by the feeling to be himself in all situations, but with the ability to switch between different cultures. It also suggests that young people are experiencing a clash of cultures that divide them, when loyalty to the family and the desire to fit into society collide.

    Abstract [en]

The article discusses how teachers who work with people with intellectual disabilities in a daily activity center specializing in horticultural work, and in an upper secondary special school specializing in farming, argues in favor of the value of nature. The theoretical starting point is based on a discourse inspired approach. Three interpretative repertoires have been identified: nature makes us happy, nature demands motivation and nature leads to fellowship, which all emphasize or deny different values connected with nature. They may also be seen as common resources that can be used when there is a need to legitimate the existence of the activities studied. The repertoires are also discussed in relation to texts about the relationship between man and nature.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the adolescents opinion of how violations in social media might look like and to study if there is something that distinguishes it from violations face to face. As the technological development create new conditions for social interaction, the people who are working to prevent violations and bullying are faced with new challenges. Therefore, the study is also focused on how schools can work with these violations. According to a report from BRIS “Children’s Right s In Society” they receive an increasing number of calls every year about bullying or other forms of violent behaviour. This points to that this is an important problem that needs to be studied closer. The study is made based on a qualitative approach in the form of semi-structured interviews. The adolescents were interviewed in focus groups of four persons in one group and two in another. Two school counselors have been interviewed individually. The theoretical approach of the study was symbolic interactionism and Erving Goffman's dramaturgical sociology. The research that is available is primarily focused on bullying and the knowledge that exists today can not always be directly transferable to what is happening on the internet. Several studies have shown that there are some fundamental differences between the violations occurring on the internet compared to other violations, even if consequences like anxiety and stress usually are the same. This study’s results show that the adolescents notices that it is often a rougher language on the internet and it has almost become a new standard. In turn this means that it is more acceptable to give mean comments. It also indicated that the adolescents would want the schools to raise the question about violations in social medias more than what is being done today

    Abstract [en]

    Background

Every year a lot of people flee from their homes because of war and persecution. Many remain in the region, while some few go to Europe to seek asylum and even fewer comes to Sweden. Some of these people are children, under 18 years old who come unaccompanied without any parent or other legal guardian. This study will be about some of these children.

    Purpose

The purpose of the study is to examine unaccompanied minors experiences of the migration process, with focus on the flight from their home country and the meeting with Sweden. The aim together with previous research led me towards two questions about children's fear and anxiety together with motivation to learn and develop during the chosen period. I hope that these children's stories will help social workers to meet, understand and support people who have gone through similar situations.

    Method

I have used a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews to emphasize the unaccompanied children's stories about their experiences of leaving their country and coming to Sweden. The theoretical grounds that I've used is system-and network theories and sociocultural theory at learning. The collected data has been coded, categorized, thematized and analysed based on the aforementioned theories and previous research.

    Results

The results show that the flight from home mostly is a difficult time for a child and feelings of fear, anxiety, insecurity and uncertainty are common during this time. Several describe the feeling of death as not far away and an exposure where one can't control one's own future. Some experienced a difficulty to establish contact with the majority population and a feeling about not fitting in in the society. To break up and leave one's home and to start over at a new place also involves changes in one's social network. Many unaccompanied minors describe a feeling of loneliness and that most of their important relations in their new social network consist of teachers in school and personnel where they are living. Finally the results also show a strength and fighting spirit among the children, that all they've been through made them stronger!

    Abstract [en]

The aim of our studie is to examine womens experiences of recieving a diagnosis of AD/HD as an adult and what social consequences this brings. As many studies focus on AD/HD from a neuropsychiatric perspective, we regard it interesting to look at it from a social perspective rather then psychiatric. The theory we mainly used is social constructionism as we think it relevant in this coherece. In the study we examine if and in that case how these women feel that the diagnosis has changed there everyday life, treatment by authority and colleagues, self-esteem/self-perception and relation to friends and close relatives. To make this possible we worded four questions at issue that was suitable for the purpose of the study. In the study we used qualitative research interviews whit four women, this as to bring forward there experiences in the best possible way. The result we found show that diagnosis has had great importance for the women as it has made them more aware of there scarcity and as a liberating explanation of there feeling of being different. To be able to analyze the text we used the theme as shaped from the questions to be able to find a pattern in the womens story. We then interpreted the material with the help of prior and relevant theories. Our conclusion is that the diagnosis strengthens the womens self-esteem/self-perception which means that they can handle there everyday life in a better way, but also that the diagnosis in it self does not change the real lack in extent any greater.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the illiterate adult immigrant's experiences of literacy and the opportunities them self-feel have to be integrated into Swedish work life. Through qualitative interviews with ten participants on literacy course in adult schools at the one of Sweden's medium great city, I have deepened my understanding of how these people are experiencing literacy, what it has contributed to in their everyday lives and what opportunities they think have in the labour market. As a theoretical starting point, I have chosen social constructivism. The results of the qualitative study showed that all respondents have a positive attitude toward literacy, since they realize that they must be able to read, write and speak Swedish to live as independent and self-sustaining adults. It also turns out that other factors in society slows their language development and in terms of their ability to get a job, they are more sceptical. My picture of the participants is that they have strong desire to integrate into the Swedish society. However, they lack strategies to make progress in the integration process, in addition, themselves or by other acquaintances feeling that they have no place in the labour market, but only at school or being on internship.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to find, understand and discuss the experiences of former employees at SAAB, and present how this can be understood according to my core theoretical concepts, which are participation and identity. The questions asked in the study are based on how the labor is described, characterized and what comes forth as valuable, which is compared to absence of labor work.

First, labor is described in an historical and social context, and at the same time related to the core theoretical concept. Second, the methodology chapter is presented, which mainly consists of 11 observations and 10 interviews. Third, the chapter regarding former theory leads to an analysis model, which is used on the empirical material of the study.

The result shows that labor work at SAAB primarily is described as important for socializing, security and the possibility to be independent. The tasks at SAAB are described as backbreaking and monotonous, while the lack of labor work influences the physical and mental wellbeing. Unemployment also contributes to limitations in everyday life, and in addition, creates negative feelings and experiences due to lack of control in a new and changed world.

In summary, the empirical and theoretical analysis taken together leads to the conclusion that labor work at SAAB is substantially described as positive, but there are however, parts which are less positive. Another conclusion is that lack of labor work primarily can be described as negative, but the opposite is also discernible. A third conclusion is that labor work is important for the understanding of participation and identity.

When using the theoretical analysis model on the results given in the empirical material, three participation- and identity patterns can be found. These are then contextual and temporal, due to time and situation; the stabile and secure pattern, the loose and temporary pattern and the compensating and regenerative pattern.

At the end of the essay there is an overall and concluding discussion regarding the findings in relation to context and society and which significance this may have on social pedagogy and its practice. Finally there is a brief section with reflections regarding the conducted study and perspectives on research to come.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the places importance for young people with disabilities. The study’s central questions are what type of places they visit and what characterizes them. It is also about answering the questions why the places are visited and what meaning this has for participation and identity. The study´s central concept is room/place, participation and identity. Knowledge review will be based on the key concepts. The collection of the empirical material has been inspired by the ethnographic methodology, which in this study included seven observation sessions and six interviews.

The result shows that the boys mainly visited two different places. This is about the publicand non-public places. Public places can be described as a place for everyone and the nonpubliconly for people with disabilities. The boys show more participation towards publicplaces which can provide activities, fellowship and well-being. Both places can offer participation, but are dependent on other factors, which in this case is about activities and visitors. None of the places shows identity, but rather the interaction between the individual and the environment. Participation doesn’t necessarily show the personal identity. In the lastchapter the importance is highlighted through a perspective of social work activity. First andforemost the public places potential is highlighted and it´s limitations for participation and theidentity process. Secondly, it is also a discussion about future planning in daily socialpedagogic practice, both on an individual and society level.

Individualism och egoism i frivilligt socialt arbete: en kvalitativ studie om vad som motiverar människor till att engagera sig i frivilligt socialt arbete2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Security guards are a group that suffers from threats and violence at the work place. In spite of this, their experiences of threats and violence at work are seldom brought to attention. One characteristic of the research on the subject is the importance of functioning groups in high-stress occupations. Research also has shown that there is a difference between security guards and police compared to medical professionals, where the latter does not see threats as a part of the job.
