    Abstract [en]

Background: People that suffer from stroke become a regular patient category in hospitals. A severe change in the patient's living situation occurs both physically, mentally and socially. A stroke can cause physical as well as cognitive impairments. When patients lose their physical ability it often leads to a sense of loss. The disability prevents the stroke survivors from living as before and they feel they are no longer in control of their lives.

Aim: To describe patient's experiences of performing activities of daily living after a stroke.

Method: Method of contributing to evidence-based nursing based on analysis of qualitative research.

Results: The result is described in two main themes: being physically limited and being psychosocially limited. Patients described traumatic and emotional experiences when they were not able to control their body and suddenly became dependent on nursing. Nurses have an important role in making the patient involved in nursing care to facilitate the patient's sense of dignity. The patients had difficulty processing their feelings after the stroke and they felt worried about the future. Social relations could be adversely affected when cognitive impairments prevented the patients and they felt sorrow when their future plans changed dramatically.

Conclusion: Patients affected by stroke were in an exposed situation. They perceived that their changed body affected them both emotionally and existentially and they had trouble accepting their functional difficulties. Everyday life became complex because of the complications after the stroke.

The impact of using touch technology in elementary education2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Before the touch-sensitive screen technology invented and being widely used all over the world, the education process was limited to three main points, the student, the teacher and the subject. Now the touch-sensitive screen is quickly becoming the fourth point that supports the education process.

The aim of this project is to define the role of touch technology on education, and to check how the process has changed using new materials. The project will mainly analyse the impact of those devices in primary schools, age 6 – 12 years and their teachers.

The report is divided into three main parts, the first part is to examine the effect of touch devices on the student, the second part related to the impact of these devices on the teacher and the third part will investigate how the touch technology influences the educational material. In the report I will also try to highlight the most important pros and cons of this technology, and also to highlight the most important flaws and shortcomings of using the devices in this area to make use of this useful technology.

The study will also show how the results differ using such devices, outcomes including doing homework, working together in groups, communicating with other students and teachers.

Samhällskunskapsämnets Janusansikte: En kvalitativ studie om hur samhällskunskapslärare på gymnasiet betonar aktualiteter i undervsiningen2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Uppsatsens empiriska material inhämtades under hösten 2016.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Leder invandring till ekonomiska förluster?: Hur arbetskraftinvandringen påverkar Sveriges ekonomi2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sweden has a history of labor migration since the World War II. The migration structure has however changed over the last decades and contains a greater number of refugees. The purpose of this paper is to examine the issue of labor migration on the economic growth in Sweden. Also throughout the study we will investigate whether Sweden needs labor migration to meet the needs of the labor market. With this study we want to create a discussion that could provide a greater understanding to the impact of labor migration. The time period in this study extends from 1970 to 2014. A Panel Vector autoregressive model (VAR) will be used to analyze the relationship between labor migration and economic growth. By support of previous research, a theoretical discussion and a comparison of results regarding labor migrations effect on the economic growth will be carried out. In the study we can deduce a positive impact on the Swedish economic growth of the immigration. The variable immigration does however not only take the labor migration into account, which can lead to a deceptive result, because the impact of all immigration is captured in this variable. In the analysis of the result we can interpret that immigration does not displace domestic labor, because of the positive impact of immigration on the employment rate.

Spinning? Du menar väl springning?: En kvalitativ studie om elevers utvecklande av läsförståelse i matematik med hjälp avTalk Moves2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Goodwill is a complex and discussed accounting area. This because of the difficulty in defining what goodwill is, no clear common method for managing the asset has been found and that they are now based on interpretations, assessments and estimates. Previous research that writes about goodwill and the standards IFRS 3 and IAS 36 addresses the difficulties with the information of requirements, the definition of goodwill, difficulties with the standards and also the impairments during the first years since the introduction of the standards. However, there is no longitudinal study between the years 2005-2018, which looks at companies that apply the accounting standards to see if impairments have been made since the introduction. The purpose of this longitudinal study is to investigate and map whether companies that apply IFRS 3 and IAS 36 handle goodwill and any impairment testing, but also what reasons may be behind an impairment. The research questions are:

 Have impairments been made since the introduction of IFRS 3 and IAS 36?

 What is the reasons why impairments are or are not made?

The theory discusses how impairment testing of goodwill is made, the difficulties with impairments and criticisms of the accounting standards. The keywords used are: goodwill, IAS 36, IFRS 3, impairment, negative, reasons and why. To obtain empirical data, a longitudinal study has been conducted by fourteen company's annual reports for seven years. The time period is between 2005-2018 and the companies have been selected based on a list from an article in Avanza. The empirical evidence shows that impairments have been made and with how much. It also addresses how impairment assessments are made and what the reason for an impairment or not. The analysis discusses the answers from the empirical data based on the presented theory, where previous research sees that few impairments are made and that the information about goodwill is scarce in the annual reports. The conclusion for the study is that impairments have been made and this, for example, due to changed market conditions and divestments. Difficulties are also raised with the impairment tests.

Att vara frisk, så länge man är frisk, då känns det okej!: En kvalitativ livskvalitetsstudie bland äldre boende i särskilt boende2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine elderly´s, residents of nursing homes, feeling and experience of their own Quality of Life by examining their sense of well-being, satisfaction and happiness. The questions for this study was "What promotes and prevents the feeling and the experience of Quality of Life in elderly", "In what context and with whom perceive elderly high Quality of Life" and "How has the feeling and perception of Quality of Life changed after they moved to a nursing home". The choice of terms, well-being, satisfaction and happiness, has been made from Bengt Brüldes mixed Quality of Life theory. The Study is thus based on Brüldes theory ant thoughts about life and how Quality of Life can be examined.

The study has a qualitative approach, in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with six elderly living in nursing homes in a small community. The analysis was done according to DePoy and Gitlins four thought and action processes of qualitative analysis. An inductive approach was used where categories, taxonomies and themes were picked up. The categories that emerged were primarily health, meaningful relationships and social interaction with others. Other categories that emerged were help/support, security/unsecurity, economy and humility.

The study shows similar results to previous research projects nationally and internationally. The similarities that emerged is that good health is a contributing factor to an increased feeling and perception of Quality of Life, but also the importance of close and good relationships with family and friends. Furthermore, informants raised the importance of good living conditions so as economy. Nevertheless informants lift the importance of extracurricular activities but also past experience of life. What emerged as the most interesting in the analysis is our interpretation of the elderly as humble, which can affect their sense and experience of their own Quality of Life if their humbleness affect their ability to ask for help and support.

Due to the findings of the study we are of the meaning that its of importance in social work with elderly to maintain and promote the feeling and perception of Quality of Life among elderly living in nursing homes. This is based on the analysis where our interpretation suggests that elderly's humility may affect their feeling and experience of individual Quality of Life negatively.

    Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund.

    Abstract [en]

This study examinates how child interviews are implemented in financial assistance in Norrköping municipality. In 2015, the management within Financial Assistance in the Municipality of Norrköping formed a group of social workers secretaries called the "Children's Group" to investigate the possibility of conducting child interviews within Financial Assistance. The child group is an assignment from the management in Financial Assistance, where it includes social workers who can contribute to focusing on the children within Financial assistance, in order to strengthen the child's perspective, exist as a consultant's support in matters concerning children for other social secretaries and implement child interviews. During an annual work with child interviews, the children's group has written a preliminary study. The child group has written a preliminary study during one year's work about the possibility to perform child interviews in financial assistance. The preliminary study shows that in financial assistance there is potential and that there are benefits in performing child interviews. The Children's Group in Financial Assistance in the Municipality of Norrköping today consists of five social workers who are working on implementing child interviews. The study is of a qualitative approach and has been used semi-structured interviews with five informants who work within Financial Assistance and who work with the Children's Mission. The study uses organizational theory and system theory to analyze how the child group relates to the child mission and the goals of the activity. Previous research is also used to understand how the children whose parents are involved in financial assistance affects by their parents' finances situation. The purpose of the study is to investigate how Norrköping municipality is working to implement child interviews within financial assistance and how the employees who are part of the child group experience the implementation process. The purpose is also to highlight opportunities and difficulties with the implementation. The study uses theories to offer an understanding of how the child group relates to the mission and the goals of financial assistance. Previous research is also used to highlight children whose parents are involved in financial assistance in order to gain an understanding of how these children are affected by their parents' finances. The study's results showed that the purpose of child interviews within financial assistance is to offer the children the opportunity to be noticed and make their voice heard. The purpose is also to follow the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Social Services Act, who contain regulations about the child's best interests. Using child interviews in financial assistance can help social workers to make more overall assessments where different perspectives are taken into account in their work. The study shows that the child group that works with the implementation of child interviews needs more time and resources in the form of the education in order for the implementation to continue and thus for the child group's commitment to remain. It appears that the implementation of child interviews has begun to apply as of May 1, 2019, but that the work has not been fully possible due to the absence of a compliance form 4 that was planned to be given out to the child’s legal guardians to ask whether their child can be interviewed or not. The results of the study show that the work with the implementation of child interviews can be influenced by decisions that must be made by the management, staff turnover, new employees that are part of the group who need to get introduced and practice child interviews, cancellations, loss and lack of resources in form of time and economy. These are some of the factors that need to be considered when implementing child interviews.

    Abstract [en]

Francois Recanati has recently argued that each perceptual state has two distinct kinds of content, complete and explicit content. According to Recanati, the former is a function of the latter and the psychological mode of perception. Furthermore, he has argued that explicit content is temporally neutral and that time-consciousness is a feature of psychological mode. In this paper it is argued, pace Recanati, that explicit content is not temporally neutral. Recanati's position is initially presented. Three desiderata for a theory of time-consciousness are subsequently introduced. It is then argued that a theory locating time-consciousness as a feature of psychological mode will fail to satisfy these desiderata. In the last section the intentionality of memories is discussed. Using the notion of shiftable indexical, it is argued that memories have the same explicit content as perceptions, but that they nevertheless can have different conditions of satisfaction since they are entertained in different modes.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Studiens fältarbete skedde i två olika steg.

Children's beliefs about bilingualism and language use as expressed in child-adult conversations2017In: Multilingua - Journal of Cross-cultural and Interlanguage Communication, ISSN 0167-8507, E-ISSN 1613-3684, Vol. 36, no 4, p. 401-424Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to describe young children's beliefs about language and bilingualism as they are expressed in verbal utterances. The data is from Swedish-medium preschool units in three different sites in Finland. It was generated through ethnographic observations and recordings of the author's interactions with the children. The meaning constructions in the interactions were analyzed mainly by looking closely at the participants' turn taking and conversational roles. The results show that children's beliefs of bilingualism are that you should use one language when speaking to one person; that languages are learnt through using them; and that the advantage of knowing more than one language is being able to talk to (other) people. The results also show that this knowledge of languages is no different from other knowledge within their world. This will probably change over time as the children enter school, and it is something in which our presence as language researchers will have played a part.

Where communication flows, languages swim freely: developing fieldwork methods for investigating preschool children's language beliefs2015In: AFinLAn vuosikirja, E-ISSN 2343-2608, no 73, p. 159-171Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I reflect on methodological aspects to take into consideration when developing methods for investigating three- to five-year-old children's beliefs about language, language use and bilingualism. I analyze participant observations and notes taken in the field. The study focuses on bilingual Finnish-Swedish children in Swedish-medium preschools in Finland. At one of the schools, most of the children and I did not share a common language, so the interaction between us heightened both the children's language awareness and that of my own. This drew my attention to communicative aspects of embodiment and multimodality and to the distribution of responsibility for interaction. I detected two interaction orders in which children's agency stood out in their intention to make their voice heard, and I used my experiences to develop an ethically-oriented data-generating approach to enhance communication about communication.

Kan flextid och distansarbete minska konflikten mellan arbetsliv och privatliv?2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today, flexible ways of working such as flextime and telework are a common occurrence, which could result in a conflict between work life and private life. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate whether there was a relation between the attitude to flextime and telework as well as in what way an individual experiences a conflict between work life and personal life and finally, if flextime and telework affects the extent an individual experiences a conflict between work life and private life. This study had a quantitative approach and consisted of a survey with questions regarding flextime, telework and the conflict between work life and private life. The respondents of the study consisted of 92 administrative officials working at a municipality (67% women och 33% men), (year of birth, M = 1970, SD = 11,05). Every respondent was bound by the same flextime contract and none of them had a leading position. To interpret the results, previous research was used as well as result analyses, specifically Pearson correlations and t-tests. The results indicated that the majority of the respondents considered flextime and telework positively. The results also showed that those that had a positive attitude to telework also experienced the conflict between work life and private life to higher level. Furthermore, the more positive an individual is towards flextime the more positive is an individual towards telework. In the free-text answers it was possible to find answers from the respondents that showed some of the negative aspects of flextime and telework.

    Abstract [sv]

Robot motion control based on 3D mouse tracking2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The manufacturing industry and associated systems are being developed in an increasing manner to cover the market needs, where the manufacturing companies are continuously racing and competing to achieve high productivity rate and better production quality. In this thesis work, an advanced method for motion control of industrial robots has been investigated and implemented. This method is based on motion tracking of a 3DSpaceMouse, which was used to perform movements by the operator. The benefits and disadvantages of this method were discussed in this thesis work. It mainly showed a high accuracy in response to the motion applied by the 3DSpaceMouse, and a great stability regarding the programming environment that was used to build it. The movements applied by the 3DSpaceMouse were successfully captured and stored in variables in the programming platform. The capturing and storing process was successfully created as a package and prepared to be exported for usage by other software. Complete simulation was performed for an industrial robot, and successful communications among the various hardware and software components of this solution were accomplished. This has formed a complete integrated solution that has also included a user-friendly HRI. This HRI made it easy and simple to track the motion control processes and establish connections with the robot controller. Thus, it can be considered a feasible solution for motion control of industrial robots, which can be used by the manufacturing companies. Several tests and verification processes were carried out to obtain accepted results and to succeed in implementing a working model. Some errors and unexpected events have appeared during the work, which required handling in order to achieve a working integrated system.

Sustainability and CSR online communication by Nordic Banks2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Both experts and scholars have assured that Corporate Social Responsibility is one of competitive advantage components for MNEs. The increasing focus on sustainability comes from rising stakeholders' pressures for more organizational accountability and transparency across a range of corporate behavioural issue. Recently one of the main interesting areas for banks is solving social problems and concerning community welfare plans. Hence banks become one of the most active sector regarding investment on CSR practices.

Many companies are able to publish their sustainability issues online, but they do not because they are afraid to be attacked and criticized by NGOs, which mean that they do not have enough experience in communicating their CSR activities online.

Many recent researches regarding communicating sustainability online have lack of their findings' generalizability across different industry and countries therefore, it is recommended to conduct future researches that have this generalizability for specific industry and area or region, therefore authors have chosen Nordic Banks as a specific industry and region for their thesis.

Research question: How do banks in Nordic countries communicate their CSR and three aspects of sustainability through online?

Purpose: This thesis aims to understand the way in which Nordic banks convey their CSR's messages online. Beside the authors seek to identify similarities and differences of communicating the messages between Nordic banks regarding sustainability dimensions.

Design/Methodology/Approach: This thesis is qualitative and has followed deductive approach. Meanwhile, multiple case is the study design. Six Nordic bank which are: Nordea, Swedbank, SEB, Handelsbanken, Danske bank and DNB are in the sample of this thesis. The data have collected through online observation of each banks' corporate websites regarding communicating sustainability dimensions terms.

Findings: The CSR and Sustainability online message that is communicated by Nordic bank is reach, the banks have some similarity and differences in conveying their CSR and sustainability online message.

    Abstract [en]

Background The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, CRC, claims that children should be heard in decisions about themselves. Children also have the right to play. This need to be applied in healthcare environment. Swedish laws and guidelines for children's healthcare confirm this. What do children themselves propose as important support to participate? Aim The aim of this study was to describe children and young people's experience in healthcare environment. Method A literature-based study of nine qualitative academic articles was conducted. 556 children altogether were asked about their experience from healthcare environment. Results The result is presented by five themes: To be afraid and sad To feel comfort and safety To understand To be included in decisions To know the nurse Conclusion Children and young people in healthcare environment feel discomfort and insecurity. They need help with symptoms and fear. If the nurse is perceived as a "bad nurse", the child is exposed to feel helpless. A child need a certain amount of comfort, playing and contact with peers to be motivated to participate. When invited to ask questions and express their worries, they want to be involved. Children want to participate in decisions about themselves. The nurse has a key role to involve the child. Confidence is built through technical skills in achieving procedures, good communication and personal attributes, such as being helping, kind, friendly and humorous.

Relationen mellan ledarskap, organisationskultur och struktur: hur bekräftas en relation som är osynlig?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There are several factors that interact and affect an organization's survival and effectiveness. The factors we have chosen to study is leadership, organizational culture and structure and how these factors work in a relationship. To understand the relationship interactions, but also to understand how the relationship is improved, we have studied the different types of leadership, organizational cultures and structures. It has helped us to understand that the organization's approach and values requires a certain type of example leadership style needs some kind of organizational culture and structure for the relationship to work effectively. Schein (1993) argues that organizational culture is created by a constant interaction between the employees of an organization formed by the leadership behavior and therefore it is important that the management style and organizational culture works in relation to each other.

As help for this study we have chosen an organization to answer how the relationship between leadership, organizational culture and structural works in practice. The organization we have investigated is Ur & Penn AB, which operates in the retail sector, we would however point out that this study can be applied to other organizations in the retail sector as a means to identify and respond to the type of leadership style, organizational culture and structure it has. In order to be able to take a position and understand how to deal with changes to meet their organization's needs. When we could answer that, we could identify overlaps and gaps in the relationship as Anthony (1990) describes as problematic and occurs when there is discord in the relationship, but also when changes occur that are biased to a factor.

We have conducted a qualitative study and by doing semi-structured interviews. To get a complete picture of the organization we selected interviewees from marketing, finance, purchasing, logistics, HR, the President, and a store employee.

As to the result have we studied how structural changes have affected the organization and the relation to organizational culture and the leadership. We have also proven which type of leadership, organizational culture- and structure Ur & Penn have and also if it is the right approach to get a relation that is functional.

    Abstract [sv]

Men’s Experience of Difficulties during First Year Following Myocardial Infarction: Not OnlyFatigue2016In: Health, ISSN 1949-4998, Vol. 8, p. 1654-1667Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Recovery from a myocardial infarction (MI) can be a very difficult process and some patients are also stricken by fatigue. The aim of the study was to describe the difficulties experienced by men with fatigue during the first year following their MI. The study was conducted using qualitative content analysis of semi-structured interviews with nine men in working age (mean age: 55 years) with verified fatigue (≥12 of 20 on the Multidimensional Fatigue Scale with a mean of 17) one year after their MI. During the first year after the MI the men suffering from fatigue experienced various difficulties in terms of both themselves and the care received. The analysis generated three themes with difficulties described by the interviewed men. 1) Going through involuntary change: not recognizing their body and the inability to recognize themselves. 2) Lacking individualized care: To be denied satisfactory health care treatment and to be denied respectful treatment. 3) Not being seen in the light of the social context: The MI affects the whole family and caregivers do not pay attention to the family. In order to make both the patient and relatives feel secure and cared for, it is essential that caregivers be aware of the importance of providing individualized care over time with particular attention for the patient’s social context.

    Abstract [en]

In the nurse's profession, protecting health is an answer, some patients may need motivation and support in their lifestyle change. A method that can be used for lifestyle changes is Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI is a method who initially was intended to be used for patients with alcohol problems. However, it was seen that the method also worked to apply in other areas. The aim of this study was to explore nurses and patients´ experiences in MI. In this literature study a qualitative method was used. The result of this study was based on twelve articles. The nurses consider that MI has a person-centered approach where the patients came into focus. They felt that MI had a respectful and valuable approach towards the patient. It also appeared how important the nurses thought it was with training and practice of the method and that they felt support in using the method. The patients experienced that MI gave them the possibility to change their own thoughts instead of being forced to a change that they were not ready to do. MI is a method that can be used in various areas during lifestyle changes. The result of this study shows that if nurses are being trained, get the chance to develop their skills than their experienceis that MI is a good method to use. It is also important that nurses are given the opportunity to use the method. The patients' experience was that MI makes them involved and self-determined in their own care.

    Fatigue after myocardial infarction - a two-year follow-up study2013In: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 22, no 11-12, p. 1647-1652Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aims and objectives: To investigate changes in self-reported fatigue and depression from four months to two years following a myocardial infarction, as well as to explore gender differences, identify the incidence of fatigue without coexisting depression and finally predict health-related quality of life at a two-year follow-up. Background: Depression and fatigue are associated with decreased health-related quality of life after myocardial infarction. Although there is a close relationship between fatigue and depression, it has been shown that symptoms of fatigue can occur without coexisting depression. Design: Quantitative and longitudinal design. Methods: Participants (n = 155) were asked to complete the following questionnaires: the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20 (MFI-20) and the Short Form Survey (SF-36) following myocardial infarction (after four months and two years). Descriptive statistics, paired t-tests and multiple regressions were carried out. Results: In the entire group, self-reported fatigue had decreased from four months to two years after myocardial infarction. After two years, 18% of respondents reported depression together with fatigue and 30% reported fatigued without depression. Women scored higher than men on the fatigue dimensions reduced activity, reduced motivation and mental fatigue. Moreover, the physical dimension of health-related quality of life two years after myocardial infarction was predicted by experienced general fatigue at four months. Conclusion: Fatigue with or without coexisting possible/probable depression remains as a significant symptom two years after myocardial infarction in nearly half of the entire group. Relevance to clinical practice: Fatigue is a problem following myocardial infarction. Therefore, systematic screening and early identification of patients experiencing symptoms of depression and fatigue after myocardial infarction are important for suitable care planning. Fatigue after myocardial infarction: Relationships with indices of emotional distress, and sociodemographic and clinical variables2010In: International Journal of Nursing Practice, ISSN 1322-7114, E-ISSN 1440-172X, Vol. 16, no 4, p. 326-334Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Fatigue and depressive symptoms are relatively common among patients recovering from myocardial infarction (MI). The symptoms of depression and fatigue overlap. The present study aimed at identifying patient fatigue and at examining the incidence of fatigue, particularly without coexisting depression, after MI. The sample comprised 204 consecutive patients who had completed the questionnaires Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory–20 after MI (1 week and 4 months). The results showed that fatigue had decreased after 4 months compared with the time of MI onset. Compared with the general population, patients reported significantly higher levels of fatigue. Furthermore, fatigue was associated with depression, but 33% of the sample reported fatigue without coexisting depression after 4 months. In order to prevent or treat patients' symptoms of fatigue after MI, the concepts of fatigue and depression should be assessed separately so as to exclude overlapping effects.

Illness perceptions after myocardial infarction: relations to fatigue, emotional distress, and health-related quality of life2010In: Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, ISSN 0889-4655, E-ISSN 1550-5049, Vol. 25, no 2, p. E1-E10Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background and RESEARCH Objective: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is impaired in patients after a myocardial infarction (MI), and fatigue and depression are common health complaints among these patients. Patients' own beliefs about their illness (illness perceptions) influence health behavior and health outcomes. The aim of the present study was to examine illness perception and its association with self-reported HRQoL, fatigue, and emotional distress among patients with MI. Subjects and Methods: The sample consisted of 204 patients who had had MI and who completed the questionnaires during the first week in the hospital and 4 months after the MI. The questionnaires used were the Illness Perception Questionnaire, Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). Results: Patient's illness perception changed over time from a more acute to a more chronic perception of illness, and beliefs in personal and treatment control of MI had decreased. Furthermore, these negative beliefs were associated with worse experiences of fatigue and lowered HRQoL. Conclusions: Patients' illness perceptions influence health outcomes after an MI. Supporting MI patients in increasing their perception of personal control could be a primary nursing strategy in rehabilitation programs aimed at facilitating health behavior, decreasing experiences of fatigue, and increasing HRQoL. Patients' illness perception four months after a myocardial infarction.2008In: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 17, no 5A, p. 25-33Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore patients' illness perception of myocardial infarction four months after a myocardial infarction. BACKGROUND: An important task for research on recovery from myocardial infarction is to understand the factors that influence an individual's adherence to secondary preventive strategies. Perceptual, cognitive and motivational factors have been found to influence adherence to a secondary preventive regimen. METHOD: Twenty-five patients were interviewed four months after a myocardial infarction. In accordance with grounded theory methodology, data collection and analysis were carried out simultaneously. RESULTS: The findings can be understood in light of two core categories: 'trust in oneself ' vs. 'trust in others'; belief in one's own efforts to control the illness; and 'illness reasoning', lines of thought about illness identity. In searching for relationships, six categories describing variation in illness perceptions of a myocardial infarction emerged: (i) 'sign of a chronic condition - feasible to influence'; (ii) 'sign of a chronic condition - uncontrollable'; (iii) 'acute event that can recur - feasible to influence'; (iv) 'acute event that can recur - uncontrollable'; (v) 'unthinkable acute event'; and (vi) 'non-recurring acute event'. CONCLUSION: The more reflective patients perceived the heart attack as a sign of a chronic condition; they also devoted time for reasoning about the possible causes of their illness. This is in contrast to patients who were less reflective and viewed their myocardial infarction as an acute event, which they avoided thinking about. The findings contribute to our understanding of variation in illness perceptions. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The examination of how individuals perceive myocardial infarction may help health-care professionals individualize secondary preventive strategies, thereby improving adherence to health-care regimens. Nurse-patient discussions could begin with identification of the patient's variations of reflectiveness concerning his/her illness.

Illness perceptions of fatigue and the association with sense of coherence and stress in patients one year after myocardial infarction.2016In: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 25, no 3-4, p. 525-533Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aims and objectives. To explore the associations between illness perceptions offatigue, sense of coherence and stress in patients one year after myocardial infarc-tion.Background. Post-myocardial infarction fatigue is a stressful symptom that is dif-ficult to cope with. Patients' illness perceptions of fatigue guide professionals inpredicting how individuals will respond emotionally and cognitively to symptoms.Individuals' sense of coherence can be seen as a coping resource in managingstressors.Design. A cross-sectional study design was used.Method. One year post-myocardial infarction, a total of 74 patients still experi-encing fatigue completed four questionnaires: the Multidimensional Fatigue ScaleInventory -20, the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, the Sense of Coherencescale (sense of coherence-13) and a single-item measure of stress symptoms.Descriptive statistics, correlations and stepwise regression analysis were carriedout.Results. Strong negative associations were found between illness perceptions offatigue, sense of coherence and stress. Sense of coherence has an impact on illnessperceptions of fatigue. Of the dimensions of sense of coherence, comprehensibilityseemed to play the greatest role in explaining illness perceptions of fatigueone year after myocardial infarction.Conclusion. To strengthen patients' coping resources, health-care professionalsshould create opportunities for patients to gain individual-level knowledge thatallows them to distinguish between common fatigue symptoms and warning signsfor myocardial infarction.Relevance to clinical practice. There is a need to improve strategies for copingwith fatigue. It is also essential to identify patients with fatigue after myocardialinfarction, as they need explanations for their symptoms and extra support

Implementation of a New Working Method in Psychiatric Care2015Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The implementation of evidence-based methods in hospital settings is challenging and multifaceted. There are several different factors that may affect implementation processes, of which the organisational culture may be one. It is well known that conservative organisational culture can hinder implementations; accordingly, a mix of different organisational cultures is preferable. Aim: The aim of this thesis was to follow the implementation process of an ICF-based assessment tool regarding cultural differences associated with the implementation in a psychiatric clinic. As part of the project, an assessment tool based on the International classifi cation of functioning disability and health (ICF) was developed and implemented. Method: In Study I, three Swedish expert groups participated and analysis of inter-rater reliability was conducted through simulated patient cases. In Study II, data were collected through focus group interviews pre- and post-implementation of the ICF-based assessment tool; thereafter, data were analysed using directed content analysis guided by Normalization Process Theory (NPT). Data from 109 nursing staff who completed the organisational values questionnaire (OVQ) and resistance to change (RTC) were investigated, and the association between the OVQ and RTC was examined with regression analysis (Study III). Patients n=50 representing the intervention hospital and n=64 representing the control hospital answered the Empowerment scale (ES) and Quality in psychiatric care (QPC-IP) (n=45 from intervention hospital and n=64 from control hospital). Staff n=37 at the control hospital answered the OVQ which was presented as descriptive data (Study IV). Results: Inter-rater reliability of the ICF-based assessment tool (DLDA) displayed acceptable kappa values (Study I). The DLDA tool showed the potential for empowering patients. Furthermore, it was considered useful for dialogues, refl ection and for identifying patients’ strengths. Nonetheless, it was diffi cult to implement it in practice due to contributing factors such as time pressure, heavy workload, stress and lack of routine in using the tool (Study II). The intervention hospital was characterised by an organisational culture of trust, belongingness and fl exibility, i.e. a human relation culture. One ward (I.W.3), however, was not dominated by a human relation culture. This ward had an almost equal mix of different cultures (human relation, open system, internal processes and rational goal) (Study III). The results of Study IV were non-signifi cant; however, it indicated that intervention ward 3 proved to be the most prominent ward regarding patient participation and empowerment among the intervention group. The results suggest hospital wards with equal mix of different cultures is more successful than cultural polarisation. Conclusion: Only one of fi ve wards succeeded in implementing the DLDA successfully (ward 5). Ward number three was the most successful of the inpatient intervention wards. The intent of the DLDA method was considered to be good and its use in a psychiatric nursing context can provide structured support in order to improve the dialogue with the patient, but it was not used in practice in all the studied wards. The organisational culture of the intervention hospital was dominated by human relation properties, however with one exception, ward number three. The results tentatively show that organisational culture may affect outcomes of implementation processes. Consequently, it appears that an equal mix of different cultures are more auspicious than cultural polarisations. The results seems to confi rm previous research, where one ward with a balanced mix of different cultures succeeded best to implement DLDA, of the wards representing psychiatric inpatient care. Ward number three did also show the best results in terms of empowerment and patient participation of the intervention wards. Further research aims to continue developing and conducting psychometric testing of the DLDA tool. The DLDAs impact on patient assessed empowerment and patient participation requires studies on larger populations than the current study

A New Working Method in Psychiatric Care: the impact of implementation2016In: International Journal of Public Administration, ISSN 0190-0692, E-ISSN 1532-4265, Vol. 40, no 3, p. 295-304Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

An equal mix of organizational cultures is important for a successful implementation process. The aim of this study was to examine the implementation of a new working method in psychiatric hospital wards, representing different cultural characteristics. Descriptive quantitative data were collected at two hospitals (intervention and control). The results revealed one ward characterized by a mix of organizational cultures. This ward, compared with other intervention wards, showed the best results regarding patient assessed empowerment and participation. The result shows tentatively that organizational culture may have an impact on the implementation processes.

The process of implementing a new working method - a project towards change in a Swedish psychiatric clinic2014In: Journal of Hospital Administration, ISSN 1927-6990, E-ISSN 1927-7008, Vol. 3, no 6, p. 174-189Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The implementation of evidence-based methods in hospital settings is difficult and complex. The aim of the present study was to highlight the implementation process concerning a new working method, i.e. a new assessment tool, based on the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF), among psychiatric nursing staff on five participating wards at a Swedish county hospital. Descriptive, qualitative data were collected through focus group interviews pre- and post-implementation. Data were analysed using directed content analysis, guided by Normalization Process Theory (NPT). The results revealed that just one of the five participating wards met the criteria for a successful implementation process. The results confirm previous studies showing the difficulty of implementation. Although participants agreed with the intention of the model, they were reluctant to apply it in practice. The implementation process seemed to be influenced by factors such as: time pressure; heavy workload; stress; lack of routines in using the tool; lack of nursing staff; as well as cultural characteristics and resistance to change.

Signalord i matematiska textuppgifter: en kvalitativ studie om hur andraspråkselever i årskurs tre arbetar med matematiska textuppgifter2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis tells a story about how the Iranian Government commands and controls homosexual men through disciplining and normalization. The main focus of this study is to clarify and inform how homosexual men can experience their lives in Iran. The study is built on storytelling based on a documentary film and different literature.

Be Like Others (2008), also known as Transsexuals in Iran created by Tanaz Eshaghian, Desiring Arabs (2007) written by Joseph A. Massad, What's really wrong with the Middle East (2011a) and Unspeakable Love, Gay and Lesbian Life in the Middle East (2011b) by Brian Whitaker. The various informational sources, informs about how homosexual men experience their everyday life and what has pushed them to undergo a gender reassignment treatment or surgery. Why they among other things are forced to go through surgery that changes their gender identity or expression to fit into the norm in Iran. But also tells different stories and news affecting LGBTQ life situations in the Middle East and what needs to change in order to improve their daily life. The Iranian government implements various regulations and laws that discipline and normalize Iranian inhabitants resulting in gay men changing expression or identity to fit into the norm. Homosexuality in Iran is a controversial subject, for instance, when the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited Columbia University in New York on 24th September 2007, he took the opportunity to express that Iran is a LGBTQ-free state. This statement led the author to tell a story about various situations and how life is for homosexual man in Iran. In the narrative storytelling, a discussion about whether homosexual men in Iran exists or not and under what conditions of life they survive, based on discipline and normalization of Iran, takes place. The study's main conclusions is that the Iranian government controls people to maintain the normal gender role and relations and therefore to maintain this normal heterosexual norm through disciplining and normalization.

En kvantitativ studie om förekomsten av big bath på Stockholmsbörsen2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

En kvantitativ studie om big bath på Stockholmsbörsenwas written by Salman Alwassiti and Martin Hallgren who studied the economics program at Högskolan väst in Trollhättan during the spring of 2017. Internationally, many studies about big bath have been conducted in relation to different variables. Two variables confirmed to have a clear connection to big bath are negative results and replacement of CEO. What made our essay interesting was that, based on our knowledge, this was the first time a negative result and replacement of CEO was tested in combination for connection to big bath. Based on our knowledge, this was also the first time negative results and the CEO replacement was tested separately for connection to big bath in the Swedish market. Globalization has also brought about new economic rules such as IFRS, which also had an impact on the trends in big baths. The thesis is mainly written to business economists and researchers studying big bath. The purpose of the thesis is to achieve a clear result that answers the research questions:

    1. Does a negative result affect the presence of a big bath?

    2. Does a CEO replacement affect the presence of a big bath?

    3. Does negative result and CEO replacement in combination affect the presence of a big bath?

The aim of the study is to achieve clear results that will answer these research questions. Evidence of correlation between negative results, CEO replacement, both combined and big bath has been obtained through scientific articles for the theoretical reference framework. Based on the theory, the different hypotheses have since been deduced:

Hypothesis 1: A negative economic result increases the incidence of big bath.

Hypothesis 2: The degree of big bath increases when a CEO's replaced.

Hypothesis 3: The combination of both a negative result and a CEO replacement increases the occurrence of a big bath.

The research questions are answered by the fact that the different hypotheses are either in line with reality or must be rejected. To test the hypotheses, a total of 180 small, medium and large listed companies have been selected on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The data has been taken from the randomly selected companies' annual reports. The thesis results showed that there was a correlation between negative results and big bath which was quite expected. The correlation test showed that there is a negative correlation between big bath and relative results of -0.277. The standardized betacoefficient also indicated a relationship of -0.277. The significance of the two tests were 0.000. Sweden is on similar level with the other investigated countries from the theory chapter. No statistically significant relationship was found between the big bath and the CEO replacement, which goes against the theoretical reference framework. Nor was there any connection between finding a combination of negative results and CEO replacement and big baths. As a proposal for further studies, big bath can be studied in relation to IFRS introduction in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper we will investigate how Disney's 12 principles of animation is used today by professional 3D CGI animators in their work.

The purpose of this study is to get an insight on how Disney's 12 principles of animation has changed for application in 3D CGI animation, as they were originally made for hand-drawn animation.

Based on a selective choice based on a survey sent to studios working with animation and to freelance animators, we conduct interviews with the animators who answered the survey and could provide empirical data to our research.

In the interviews, we ask how the respondents apply Disney's 12 principles of animation in their work in order to evaluate how they have changed since the 30s.

The results we got showed that all respondents agree that Disney's 12 principles of animation are important tools in the creation of believable character animations.

Some respondents chose to go through each animation principle and explain how they utilize each principle in their work, while other respondents stated they did not carefully followed these principles as they work with timelimited projects which means they do not have time to go through them all
