Flexibilitet inom yttre ramar: en studie i hur baspersonal i äldreomsorgen upplever sin yrkesroll2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Vem är du bakom datorskärmen?: Who are you behind the screen?2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our thesis was to illustrate adolescences own experience of their presentation in Facebook and Instagram, and how using Facebook and Instagram effects their identity construction and their own narratives about their use of these social medias. Our study has a qualitative approach with nine adolescences in three focus groups. The thesis theoretical premises are the dramaturgical analysis of Erving Goffman and modernity and self-identity of Anthony Giddens. These are used together with the present science in the thesis.

The result shows that Facebook and Instagram are a big part of adolescent’s life and they join these forums because they don’t want to be outside these communities. The forums stand for communication with their contacts, entertainment and updates about events and publishing of pictures of special happenings. The presentation that especially happens through pictures is important for the adolescents because they see the presentation as a public face for the other users in these forums.  The information the informants share with other users are supposed to be a reflection of their life, but they pointed out that it’s easy to show an adjusted view, or to create a whole another identity behind the screen if they wish. The use of Facebook and Instagram effects the adolescent’s identity construction in some parts by the reflection of themselves through the other users. The result also shows that the informants are taking place in Instagram and use Facebook less today than before. The informants believe that Facebook has gone from private to a more public area. Instagram has now taken over the private character when the presentation through pictures is more interesting when they can regulate users who can see them.

Keywords: identity construction, Facebook, Instagram, presentation, using.

"Han ville inte bånka in kunskap utan mer ett sätt att tänka": En studie om ungdomar, identitet och socialisation2010Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study is about participants in a labour market project in a town in central Sweden, where we investigated what it meant to the participants to be in the project. We have also investigated what it is that important for the participants in order to gain employment in the future and how this can bee understood from a power perspective.

    The so called

arbetslinjen, a Swedish concept in labor market policy, is intended as a pursuit of a working life for all, where those who do not find work will be offered work experience or training in an effort to get closer to the labor market. Given that unemployment is a societal problem and a threat to social cohesion, we think it is relevant to use social Pedagogic as a field of knowledge to draw attention to the unemployed and their situation. We also use the concept of power to understand the participants' position in the labor market project.

What emerges is that the participants are assisted in a form of basic skills such as Swedish teaching and writing personalized letters. Participants responded that job search, writing per-sonalized letters get community information, study visits and Swedish teaching is conducted in the project itself. What we have seen from our interviews with the participants is that contacts, mutual support between the participants, and been given attention and consideration to, is what is most prominent and important to them. Participants also emphasized that Swedish teaching is particularly important to move closer to work.

What may be emphasized is the difference between this project and what we have seen in pre-vious research, which is that in our study, participants are mainly positive about the attitude of the staff and the participation in the project gave the participants new contacts, friends and more confidence. Several participants emphasize that the increased confidence and new contacts also meant that they see a brighter future ahead, which in some cases also led to job training and work. Although the participants also express that they are surrounded by power and control within the project. E.g. the participants do not receive unemployment benefits if they choose not to participate in the project. Participants also describe a perceived discrimination towards them by employers on the basis that they are immigrants.

Du vet mitt namn men inte min historia: en studie om utländska akademiker och deras möte med den svenska arbetsmarknaden2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate foreign academics' experiences of meeting with, and entry to the Swedish labor market. Study questions: What obstacles could hamper the establishment of the labour market for foreign graduates? What factors can promote the formation of the labour market for foreign graduates? The theoretical starting point for the study is taken on the basis of social constructivism and the concept of race as a social construction. The study was conducted with qualitative research, which was conducted using semi-structured interviews, life-world. The analytical method for the study was the IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis), where common themes were highlighted and discussed from the theoretical points. In the results section, the study questions were answered as follows: Obstacles that can hinder the establishment of foreign graduates in the labour market is society's beliefs, social categorizations, ethnic discrimination, structural changes in the labour market and employers' influence. In summary, the study's results depicted how important it is to highlight that the perceptions that exist in society concerning people with foreign backgrounds affect the perception of the individual. These factors were the key elements and the core of the empirical material related to this issue. The promotion factors to the establishment of foreign graduates according to the study's results are: Involvement, personal responsibility and the importance of education. The unit with the respondents' experience illustrates the importance of the recruitment criteria should apply to all, regardless of one's background or affiliation. Although personal responsibility proved to be important, such as the individual's own motivation, strength and inner resources. They also stress that there are tendencies that society's view of foreigner's resources is changing. This is because of the growing need for multicultural workforce with multilingualism, cultural competence and academic training, due to the large influx of refugees that is going on right now. The study results have both been in line with previous research, and gone against or demonstrated new angles on previous research.

Behandlingssekreterares upplevelser av familjenätverkets betydelse för ungdomar med missbruksproblem inom öppenvårdsbehandling2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how treatment providers experience the importance of family network within non-institutional care for youth with an addiction behavior. The study was designed as a qualitative study, where four treatment providers from the same treatment unit were interviewed. The interviews were conducted using the semi-structured interview guide method. The data collected was then analyzed using the theoretical perspective symbolic interactionism, with the terms definition of situation and the significant others. Previous studies were also taken into account. The results of this study shows that involving the family network in the treatment process is an important part of understanding a young adult's risk behavior. It appears to be within the family network that important risk factors and resources can be identified, which is essential altering a young person's risk behaviors. Providing new positive social context for the family network and young adult's appears to be fundamental in supporting this work for improvement. The study also revealed that it is the family network which can provide the primary support in a long-term perspective.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to see how the social services whit their child welfare inquiries can be a part in maintaining the gender specific norms, expectations and values.

Our research questions are: How does the discourse about boys look; how are the boys described and valued in the inquiries? How does the discourse about girls look; how are the girls described and valued in the inquiries? What are the differences between the genders?

Our theoretical base is social construtivism and gendertheory. This is a qualitative study and critical discourse analysis is our method of choice.

Our material is 14 child welfare inquiries made by social services, half of them are about girls and half about boys.

In the analyse we have come to the conclusion that the focus in the girl inquiries differs some what from where the focus in the boy inquiries lays. When investigating the girls there social intercourse and sexual relations make out a big part of the texts, the later isn’t even mentioned in the boy inquiries. We do however find that the differences have changed in comparison with the previous research that’s presented in our study where it emphasized that girls are perceived as passive objects and the boys as active subjects. We have in our material been able to see that both boys and girls are perceived as subjects, but also objects depending on the situation.

Man kan göra det annorlunda: en kvalitativ studie om boendepersonalens svårigheter och möjligheter att skapa ett hälsofrämjande boende för asylsökande barnfamiljer2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Normalt blir asylsökande barnfamiljer placerade i lägenheter. I resultatet framkommer fem teman som delas in i två huvudteman utifrån studiens syfte.

    Abstract [sv]

"Disability is not inability, it is just very hard to live with": A qualitative study of how people with physicaldisabilities create their identities in Kenya2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background:Disability is experienced by over a billion people in the world, and they are usually placed on the bottom of the pile if you look at people living in extreme poverty, which is a problem in a development country as Kenya. Generally people with disabilities have fewer economic opportunities, poorer health and lower education achievements than people without disabilities. This is due to the many obstacles and the lack of services available that they face in their daily lives, which create social exclusion from the society. People with disabilities are often seen as a stigmatized group in the society, something that will affect the construction of their identities. Aim and purpose:This study has three principal aims: To highlight and describe the situation of select people with physical disabilities in Kenya; to discuss whether having a physical disability affects their lives;and if so, in what way. Method:The method that has been used for the study was qualitative research method. An interview guide with open-ended questions for semi-structured interviews was conducted. The data was collected by seven individual interviews, five men and two women. Interpretative phenomenological analysis by Jonathan A Smith was used as analysis method for the study. Categories were conducted from the transcriptions of the interviews, and then four different themes appeared that was used to analyze the material. Result:The results of the analysis is presenting that their identities are getting affected by having aphysical disability. Since the social constructionism was the theoretical approach for the study the believe is that the identity is created by interactions with other people. Within a lot of the interactions you either establish your identity or get it disproved. With the stigmatization in the society according to people with disabilities the interactions with a lot of people may will disprove your identity. Categorization and discrimination are also affecting the construction ofthe identity. All the informants explain how they feel that they belong and feel secure by being in social groups with other people with disabilities, which I would call empowerment. By being empowered they can establish the identity they feel comfortable with, not the one the society gives to them by categorization and stigma.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Two Validated Ways of Improving the Ability of Decision-Making in Emergencies: Results from a Literature Review2016In: Bulletin of Emergency and Trauma, ISSN 2322-2522, Vol. 4, no 4, p. 186-196Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the current review wasto study the existing knowledge about decision-making and to identify and describe validated training tools.A comprehensive literature review was conducted by using the following keywords: decision-making, emergencies, disasters, crisis management, training, exercises, simulation, validated, real-time, command and control, communication, collaboration, and multi-disciplinary in combination or as an isolated word. Two validated training systems developed in Sweden, 3 level collaboration (3LC) and MacSim, were identified and studied in light of the literature review in order to identify how decision-making can be trained. The training models fulfilled six of the eight identified characteristics of training for decision-making.Based on the results, these training models contained methods suitable to train for decision-making.

Förändrar sprututbytesverksamhet livskvalitet och riskbeteende hos de som deltar och vilka insatser erbjuds?2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to describe and analyse the significance of social support to adults with psychiatric disabilities, based on the individual's experiences. This includes research questions concerning what type of social support was perceived to be beneficial or restrictive, which relational aspects were considered having a beneficial or restrictive effect on the support- and recovery process, as well as what strategies and capacities the individual developed on their own in order to cope with their obstacles and disadvantages.

The empirical material was based on qualitative inteviews with ten individuals that defined themselves as having psychiatric disabilities. They were each interviewed on three occasions. The repetetive form of the interviews lead to three separate interview guides being created over the course of the data collection process. The goal of the first interview was to get a general idea of the subject's daily life, activities, arenas, relationships and support. The second interview focused on meaningful relationships. The third and final interview had one general and one individual part. The general part focused on the subject's psychiatric disabilities, their opportunities as well as existing and desired support measures. The subject matters in the individual part were related to the previous interviews with each of the participants and aimed to develop or expand on previous discussion.

The material was analysed using theories about social support and recovery and was presented with roots in four different networking entities: close and extended family, friends, coworkers and fellow students, as well as formal support instances. The result showed that it is the support with mobilising qualities that is beneficial to the recovery process. It increases the individual's degree of control over their illness, obstacles and challenges. In addition, it appeals to the individual as a central actor and as a person with difficulties as well as resources. The fact that the social support from the various support agencies have varying focus and direction benefits recovery since it increases the individual's opportunity to maintain as well as develop their social bonds and roles within the community. A relational prerequisite for social support is an equal relationship, which benefits the recovery process as it encompasses acknowledgement and acceptance of both the individual on a personal level and of their situation. The type of social support that hinders recovery is the kind that lacks a connection between the individual's perceived problems, their need for support and their over time fluctuating ability to handle their psychiatric disability. This is due to the fact that it robs the individual of control over the situation, increases the need for support and strengthens their perception of themselves as sick. Recovery comes to a halt when the individual isn't included in the support and recovery process, which is clarified in relational aspects such as lacking attentiveness, subpar acceptance as well as rejection. The individual's will and capacity to actively take on the responsibility to steer their recovery in a positive direction was made visible through four groups of strategies that were crystallised through the course of the research; creation of understanding and legitimisation, cultivation, including strategies and the creation of boundaries.

    Abstract [en]

Background: The school as an institution has existed in various forms for many centuries, and constantly followed the development of society. Regarding the problem of bullying in the school environment, it has been testified as a problem during at least several decades. This despite the fact that the school demonstrates it through active efforts of promotion and prevention. Testimony about the bullying usually comes from people who have been exposed, often long after the violations occurred, and gives us a perspective on the issue. Our intention with this essay has been to illustrate the bullying from a different perspective, by capturing the teachers' experience on the practical work against bullying.

Purpose: The overall aim is that by using Goffman's theory about stage, creating a deeper understanding of what teachers in an anti-bullying team at a primary school experience within their work with bullying among students. The issues the study relates to are:

    1. How primary school teachers from the anti-bullying team describes their role in relation to students in bullying context?

    2. How can Goffman's concept stage, role, actor, audience, teams, setting and set be used to understand the teachers' experience concerning bullying?

Method: A qualitative approach has been used with semi-structured interviews in which the analysis of the created data was based on Goffman's dramaturgical theory about the stage and previous research.

Results: The results show that the whole group is involved at the bullying between school children, either actively by exercising violation, or passively by encouraging it through positive feedback. This usually occurs beyond the teachers' sight, on stages and at such times the teachers cannot witness. The study reveals that teachers feel they have insufficient knowledge about the problem and a lack of time resources to address the problem. The stage of bullying is framed by the school's governing documents and also by the school's lack of investment in resources and teacher training.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how women who have experienced domestic violence reason about why they chose to stay in the relationship. To get answers to our purpose, we used a qualitative approach. Four women aged 23 – 42 years who had been in an abusive relationship were interviewed. The informants' answers were transcribed and then analyzed and are reported in the results / analysis section of our report. Our analysis resulted in three themes:

Violence, emotion and family, these themes revealed various factors that contributed to the women staying in their destructive relationships. It turns out that emotions such as fear, hope, shame and love had a big influence for why women chose to stay in their relationships. Family is also a reason why women chose to stay, not having enough support from relatives and the strong bonds of loyalty that exists within a family also contributed to her staying. Regarding the theme of violence, it showed that the woman either neutralized the violence, which means that she altered and reduced the violence of action meaning, or normalize violence, i.e. that violence becomes a common feature of the women's daily lives, and that the man systematically took power and control over the woman and limited her life space

    Abstract [en]

The place marketing concept is one of the most popular concepts used in the analysis and promotion of countries, regions, cities and towns. The intensification of competition for investment, tourism and human resources among European cities and towns has increased the importance of being unique. Most studies on place marketing focus on unique selling points and thus on brands of already extensively 'marketed' countries, national capitals and other large metropolitan areas, while the rural towns that need more marketing attention, given their need to overcome their lack of material and non-material resources, are often ignored. This is based on the idea of the promotion to target markets of the unique selling points of the town in question. This paper aims to discuss the extent to which the place marketing concept can be viewed as an essential tool in the effective promotion of 75 rural towns in the seven northernmost regions of Sweden. The paper outlines the reasons why rural towns in Northern Sweden should use place marketing. The article also highlights the basic features of the place marketing concept and its key elements for rural towns as well as describing the target audience for rural towns while identifying their specific needs and wants.

Medias avbildning av den ideala människokroppen - Den heliga graalen eller djävulens verktyg?: En kritisk diskurs- och bildanalys av svenska livsstilsmagasins gestaltning av den ideala människokroppen2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Summary: The purpose of this study is to examine how media construct and normalize the human body and how these create constructions of identity that are built on considered ways of what an ideal body is. The media conceptions are deconstructed through discourse and picture analysis to distinguish potential contradictions and/or hidden messages which can have an impact on people's lives. The results indicate that the media discourse depict an unrealistic and unreasonable norm of the human body which is a general thorough ideal in media depiction of body shape and outward characteristics. Publications, elements and advertising are continuously permeated by the same ideal which inevitably influence people and thus pose a risk for their opulence.

Background: Media constitutes a deciding source of information for people and is thus a central factor in the shaping of our conception of the world, which is the foundation for our thoughts and actions, and norm constructions. The media depiction of the ideal body thus pose a norm which highly influence peoples assumption of what normal female and male features should be like. Failure to meet these standards, and deviation from the norm, can induce negative consequences for people and their lives.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyse and describe how popular Swedish magazines, targeting fashion, health and beauty, construct and normalize the human body in text and picture. How media create constructions of identity which authorize certain appearances and discard others, and deconstruct these to distinguish contradictions and/or hidden messages.

    Method: Discourse and picture analysis

Result: The media depiction of the body ideal appears to be unrealistic perfection and the majority of people thus fail in comparison which can result in negative consequences for them and their lives. Furthermore, divergence and hidden messages can be interpreted from the depictions which increase the risk of a harmful outcome.

Ungdomars identitetsskapande processer på sociala medier2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this study is to create a greater understanding for the none-paper immigrant´s situation. The study is founded on three separate interviews with two men and one woman (in Sweden) without paper, who told us about their lives.

The study is based on an inductive method, which means that theories develop from the stories in the interviews. The theoretical perspective that came out of the interviews is power and identity.

We present the most central parts in the result, which has come forth in the interviews, which we show through quotes. What emerged from the interviews is that they are feeling an uncertainty about the future and that they are treated with disbelief. They also feel a sense of powerlessness and a loss of identity. Our chosen title explains the study's result - "I have no power here – but I have non in my country either." To live as a non- paper immigrant involves a powerlessness of not being able to affect their own lives

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study treats the construction and maintenance of balance between work and private life and how flexibility in the workplace is perceived. The study was conducted using semi-structured interviews and these have been conducted in five large companies around Gothenburg. The analysis and results are based on the phenomenographic method approach and the final results were four themes: Balance, Flexibility, Combining family and work and lifelong learning with related subcategories. The result shows that the construction and maintenance of balance between work and personal life is something that is tied to the indi-viduals and the current situation in life. Two of the most common strategies to maintain a dis-tinction proved to be planning as well as other activities, in order to move the focus away from the work. In the larger picture flexibility of work turned out to be something that all re-spondents are in favor of, and not perceived as something stressful

    Abstract [en]

Family violence is a social problem in Sweden. It is classified as being a problem in Swedes' general health condition and statistics show that about 5-10 percent of the Swedish children today grow up with family violence. This is alarming for society at large and at the same time important facts for those who work with socially exposed people. Many of the children who grow up in a home with family violence still manage. This is also important facts for those who work with socially exposed people. But how are they able to manage? What is it that makes people get through the family violence they grow up with? In what ways do they manage situations with violence and what is it that affects their resilience? The answers to these questions are essential within the social pedagogy and social work due to the fact that they can be helpful for professionals when encountering socially exposed people. But, the answers can also be helpful for social workers in any field when working with health promotion.

The aim with this study is to obtain understanding of how people who have experienced violence throughout their growth have dealt with violent situations and what the impacts can be that have caused their resilience. By interviewing two adult informants, both who have grown up with a parent who has abused them, my intention is to demonstrate (the memories of) their different strategies in violent situations and the possibilities of their resilience. I therefore use terms like coping (to deal with demanding situations), coping strategies and resilience (to recover).

In my study it appeared that the informants have used different coping strategies in violent situations throughout their growth. Both informants have used emotion-focused coping where they have tried to avoid the violent situation as well as problem-focused coping of which they have tried to forestall the violence by doing and acting in a way that prevent the violence from occurring. Other coping strategies that they have used are, for example, being responsible for and protective towards younger siblings, and finding other safe places and/or protective people. As a consequence of the violence, both informants have also used more destructive strategies where they have used violence against other people or tried to commit suicide. In the study it also appears that the informants, through their growth, have been helped by different protective factors of which in different ways and in all probability have influenced their resilience. Relatives, friends and a satisfying school attendance could be examples of factors that can be of advantage to the resilience, as well as their comprehension of the violence and their own resources and personal characteristics. These protective factors interplaying with the coping strategies that the informants have used have probably facilitated their resilience and their hope of a better life. Today both of them live, to all appearances, satisfying lives.

    Abstract [en]

Trust can be linked with confidence when speaking of confidence in another person's actions and reliability. The concept of organizational identification (OID) describes the degree to which individuals identify with their organization. OID affects the level of trust in management, and the extent to which employees identify with the organization's values and goals. The purpose of this study was to investigate nurses' degree of confidence in management's safety work and how the correlation appeared between trust, OID, and number of years employed in the organization. The study was based on two issues: 1) Is there a link between perceived trust in management's safety and level of OID and will it in this study be considered a positive correlation? 2) What is the connection between the nurses' length of service, age and level of OID? The study was conducted using a quantitative method, and data were collected through a questionnaire survey. The sample consisted of 42 nurses at a hospital in the Västra Götaland region. The survey instrument was based on two established questionnaires where relevant issues to study were selected in order to measure the variables trust and OID. The collected data were interpreted and analyzed in the software IBM SPSS Statistics21. The result was based on responses from 32 nurses, when 10 questionnaires were disregarded. The study results showed that the degree of trust in management and the degree of OID depends on each other. To a large extent, having faith in management's safety was related to a high degree of OID experience with the organization. Results also showed that the degree of OID did not increase with the age or the number of years in the organization. Previous research with the results of the study revealed the importance of the relationship between the level of perceived trust in management and the OID

Biståndshandläggarens upplevelser av handlingsutrymme i myndighetsutövning inom äldreomsorgen2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    * Vilka etiska dilemman uppstår i handlingsutrymmet?

    Abstract [en]

The study has been produced with the aim to investigate how five young Swedish women's personal experiences and perceptions of fear of sexual abuse might look like. I wanted my work to examine whether the young women felt that they were influenced by the fear of sexual abuse and, if so, how? An underlying aim was to analyze if the women make use of strategies to reduce fear and if they feel that this fear limits their everyday lives to the public domain.

The study was conducted using a qualitative research method in which the empirical data were collected with semi-structured interviews with five young women aged 19-22 . The material has been analyzed from a hermeneutic perspective with meaning concentrator as a base. The aim was to achieve a deeper knowledge from some young women's sense of fear and their own experiences of various inculcated in their everyday lives.

The results show that most respondents felt a fear of sexual assault. It also emerged that they considered themselves to be limited because of this fear. This fear played out in different forms and at different locations but they all five young women had in common was the fear of being raped, which was the biggest fear of them. It also emerged that they used multiple strategies to reduce fear, many of them were identical to each other. What emerged clearly in the results was that the young women were often unaware of their actions and their strategies to avoid the fear of sexual abuse in their daily lives

Vägen ut: en kvalitativ studie om klienters erfarenheter av halvvägshus.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The background to the study is the first to understand the concept of unaccompanied children, and the guidelines for the participation announcement that exist for the social worker in the work with unaccompanied minors. I want to gain knowledge of the social workers participative work with unaccompanied children and the social workers discretion and the difficulty of the work.

The purpose of the study is that based on the social worker's experience to describe and analyze the participative work with unaccompanied children.

A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews in which empirical data consists of five transcribed interviews. The interviewees have been selected by a strategic choice of the criterion of social workers who work with unaccompanied minors. An interview guide was designed to find answers to interview questions. The empirical data were analyzed based on the study of theoretical perspectives symbolic interactionism and the two theoretical concepts of participation and discretion.

The results show that all the respondents perceive their freedom of action in that big and that they are relatively free of work. The Social Services Act gives socialworkers a wide discretion when the law is merely a framework law of general guidelines. Henceforth, the results show that the respondents are experiencing great difficulties when using telephone interpreter in conversation with unaccompanied minors. It emerges from the results that the respondents experiencing difficulties increating a relationship of trust with the unaccompanied child because of the child'sprevious experiences. Furthermore, the result shows that the interviewees perceive their work with unaccompanied children who participative by letting the child take part of the information and by the child may share their opinions taken into account in the decision-making process.

    Abstract [en]

The study aims to increase understanding of the notions that exist about ADHD in student health teams working in secondary school and how these perceptions affect aid efforts given to students diagnosed with ADHD. The method we used is a qualitative research interview. The informants who the study builds on work in student health team at secondary school. The results have been analyzed using a critical discourse analysis. In our analysis, we used four discourses; interactive, indifferent, categorical, and multimodal discourse. The conclusions we can draw from the results are: - Study results show that ADHD is due to student health team as a disability where one can derive the disability to permanent damage in the brain. - The results show that student health teams describe ADHD as a disability. Despite this, student health teams are convinced that this state is so responsive that under the right conditions, you can more or less completely get rid of the symptoms that characterize ADHD. - ADHD diagnosis is seen as a personality and not as a medical condition; it is something you are, not something you have. - The study shows that the support given must be based on individual preconditions. These efforts should always be tailored to the particular student's needs. The starting point should always be the individual, and that every child is unique. - The results of the study indicate that the purpose, goals and risks of medication should be considered carefully. Only medication to cope with school life and to fit its norms is considered as doubtful and strongly disputed. - The professionals in health teams experience that they have a consensus on ADHD. This convergence is a critical factor in the work with students with ADHD. It stresses the importance of speaking the same language and having the same outlook. This convergence can also pose barriers to the creative process that is operating in the pedagogical approach.

    - The result of the study shows that the work methods that student health teams use assume a multimodal discourse where aid efforts for students with ADHD are based on four parts. These parts are: structure, environment, collaboration and attitudes/ knowledge. This multimodal discourse is considered as an integrated holistic approach in which multiple perspectives are taken into account. In social work, this integrated holistic create favorable conditions to support students with ADHD

    Abstract [en]

Title: “All of our upbringing has kind of become public”- A qualitative study on how a group of high school students views their own and others construction of identity in relation to media.

Authors: Elisabeth Lindberg & Emelie Bokdalen. Level: Bachelors Thesis 15 Higher Education Credits.

Subject: Social work. Program: Program in Social pedagogy, 180 Higher Education Credits, University West. Term: Spring term 2013.

    Supervisor: Åsa Andersson.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore how a group of high school students view their own and other people’s identity construction in relation to media.

    Problem statements:

    ●   What kind of impact does the youth consider that media has on their social sex and body image?

    ●   Does the youth see any difference between how guys and girls relate to media in their identity construction?

    ●   What impact does the youth consider that the norms and ideals that media conveys have on their identity construction?

    Summary:

Our datacollection method consisted of two qualitative group interviews conducted in high schools with participants who are completing their third year. Socialconstructionism has been our theoretical starting point in the analysis of the empirical data together with phenomenology as a basis of understanding. When analyzing the material we used the IPA method. Key words have been identity construction, social sex, body image, self-esteem and media.

We wanted to know how a group of high school students views their and other people’s identity construction in relation to media. This result was presented in ten themes with the headlines; The accessibility’s dilemma, To be distant, Who should you listen to?, Does a picture say more than a thousand words?, To put gender on an attribute,  To be a girl - a demanding mission, To become conscious about your body, Unreal reality, Affirmation - to get “likes” and To exceed yourself. What we found was that the participants felt that media, and foremost social media, had an influence on their identity construction from several aspects. We found that the participants considered that social media is used partly for reflecting your own identity in other people, since they talked about the identity as socially constructed. It emerged from the participants that they considered that individuals usually only show the positive sides of life on social media, that resulting in a pressure to always surpass oneself and others.

    Abstract [en]

The study aims to investigate and analyze skills required within the various municipal human service organizations, including social pedagogues working in Västervik. My study would also examine the activities within college-educated social pedagogues working today and what skills they have and what skills are suitable for working in human service organizations in Västervik. This study strives to be a support to prepare human service organizations in Västervik facing any challenges in future recruitment of existing and new skills. At the same time, I want to strengthen the knowledge of social pedagogues.

The study consists of both a quantitative and qualitative study. The empirical data were collected through a questionnaire and group interviews with people who have employee and operational responsibilities within various human service organizations in Västervik.

The results of my study indicate that there is a skills needs in human service organizations in Västervik mainly characterized by intellectual and social skills. The intellectual skills that staff need to master tasks and situations in the daily work were formal education and various special competences in relation to their professional field. Social skills of how personnel act in relation to others. Responding is the second prominent competencies mentioned. Future skills demand follows today's petition, however, emphasized the need to be affected by staff losses and legal and mission changes. The study shows that college-educated social pedagogues are most abundant in activities primarily engaged in change management with duties in the management and training. It turns out that social pedagogues and social pedagogy has a place in human service organizations as social pedagogy in itself is to be adapted to the needs that society demands of social work.

    Abstract [en]

    Background:

The choice to study parenting parental support was made after reading the Government's national strategy : "Parental support- a win for everyone". In this strategy, it is obvious that there must be parental support for all parents who are in need of it. The Government indicates that the aid should be designed along with the parents' needs and wishes, and that the purpose of any aid must be to strengthen parents in their parental role . I have studied the general, manual-based parenting program COPE and based on the theory of empowerment I have analysed whether the parents who participated in the COPE program have felt involved in the support, if they have had influence in creating the support structure, and if they feel that the support have strengthened them in their parental role.

    Purpose:

The aim of this study is to describe and analyse how parents perceive the design of parental support, regarding the feeling of participation from an empowerment perspective, and how the parental support leader views the parents' opportunities for participation.

    Method:

I have done a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews with four mothers who participated in the parent support, COPE , as well as intervewing a parent support leader. The parent support leaders I have been in contact with, has helped me establish contact with the parents who later participated in my study . Due to the current parenting program and its participants being located in another place, far from my own, I had to make telephone interviews. To get answers to my questions, I prepared an interview guide that I used in my interviews . I analysed my material based on my chosen theory of empowerment and the concepts; participation, user participation and user power.

    Result:

My results show that parents feel involved in the support when they are the ones initiating the discussions in the support group. The result also shows that parents feel they have become stronger in their parenting when they have been given the right tools through the support, to change their situation. Through the support, parents have also been strengthened by seeing and understanding that there are more parents needing support in their parenting role . I can also see in my findings that the parent support leader believes that parents may and are able to be a part of this type of assistance, when the parents are the ones who guide the discussions. With the help of participating in the group with both other parents and parent support leaders, experiences and knowledge are shared, creating the right conditions for parents to become stronger in their parental role .

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to describe the approach and working on a lodging for asylum seeking unaccompanied refugee children. The study examines the specific methods and tools to use in social work with the target group. It also examines whether the working methods and approaches differ in the work depending on where in the asylum process the children are.

The study is based on a qualitative approach with hermeneutics as a theoretical scientific method. The study's empirical data consists of semi-structured interviews with four informants in terms of staff on a lodging for unaccompanied refugee children in an anonymous community. By means of Empowerment and KASAM have the empirical data analyzed in a content analysis

The results of the study show that there are good practices and tools in working with unaccompanied children. Especially in terms of Empowerment and KASAM, but also in tools of the staff and their working methods. Team-meeting, structure, clarity and "Finding Right" also provides tools for staff. However, the one common denominator that knowledge is lacking on is crisis management. This can be divided into theoretical tools, organizational tools, personal tools, and tools for quality assurance. The informants are demanding tools in terms of crisis management. Results also show that the approach is different in the work depending on where in the asylum process the child is in. Results show that above all stands the school, extracurricular activities and summer work for key parts of the integration work with the children

    Abstract [en]

During the last 10 years, a new phenomena has become apparent in Swedish society causing it to face a line of new challenges. This is because of the total unaccompanied asylum-seeking children that has increased significantly during the 21st century. Estimates calculate that this number is going to increase even more during the next few years. These children are especially vulnerable as, at the same time missing their parents and their homeland, they find themselves in the middle of an uncertain asylum process. Many children carry with them difficult experiences of war, violence, abuse and tough family situations. As they have left what they know as security and are alone in a new environment, the first period of time in this country is of paramount importance as it can be crucial. To create a sense of security in this new situation, the reception and support they receive during this time is very important.

With this in mind, it seems important to pay attention to these unaccompanied asylum-seeking children's experiences and stories as the aim of this study was to examine their accounts of the support they had received during their asylum process, which aspects were a hindrance and which aspects were promotive during this time. To acquire a deeper understanding for these children's experiences, a qualitative approach was used with semi-structured interviews. The study's theoretical grounds used are network theory and social support. The data collected has been coded, categorized, thematized and analyzed based on previous research and the two aforementioned theoretical perspectives.

The results show that, during the asylum process, the children's social network is primarily in the HVB home, which forms the children's social context and constitutes the main source of support. The emotional support through good relationships is found to be significant but even communication constituted an opportunity to acquire adequate support. Language was shown as having fundamental importance. The support it meant to socialize with friends and personnel through participating in different activities was significant. This enabled the children to rest by not thinking about past traumatic experiences

    Abstract [en]

The European Union is currently experiencing a period of significant upheaval. The financial crisis, structural changes in the economy and population decline in many regions combine to make a difficult situation even worse in respect of SGI. To mitigate these problems EU policy on economic, social and territorial cohesion aims to remove regional differences and to otherwise affect policies to ensure the right to the same service status regardless of localisation. This paper aims to discuss what a minimum level of SGI means to individuals and enterprises. The key EU policy documents offer no guidance in terms of defining what a minimum level of SGI is, for either individuals or enterprises. It is up to the Member States to define the thresholds; national policies, traditions and moral values thereby creating a vague and heterogeneous notion of what constitutes a minimum level of SGI provision.

    Abstract [en]

This paper aims at comparing the scientific literature and key EU policy documents on the impact of services of general interest on regional development. The study proposes to answer two questions: (1) how do the scientific literature and EU policy documents differ in terms of which services of general interest are seen to have an impact on regional development and (2) why do they identify different services of general interest as important for regional development? The method used is qualitative discourse analysis.

The results indicate that services of general interest have a rather different assumed impact on regional development in the scientific literature and in the key EU policy documents. Eight out of the fourteen services of general interest analysed in this study are either not mentioned at all or are only indirectly touched upon in the studied EU policy documents. The EU policy documents consider the drivers for regional development to be transport, ICT and telecommunications, electricity, education and health.

Cracking the Body’s Armour: Young People´s Need for Musical Experiences in a Rational Society2010Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to problematize young people’s desires for musical experiences in Western society by theoretically analyzing such needs from a deep psychological as well as a sociological perspective. The rationalized society and new patterns of socialization form the foci of analysis. Further, special emphasis is placed on understanding and analyzing the causes of the high volume of music played at rock concerts and music festivals. Music is a medium that allows young people to get in contact with and process the deep psychological patterns that, in contemporary society, are often repressed by hard rationality. It is claimed that new patterns of socialization have made it more difficult for adolescents to establish contact with, and to integrate into, the pre-oedipal mental layer, which is a prerequisite for growth, achieving a greater degree of maturity, and the progression to and realization of new life phases.

Ethical Conceptions of Young People in Different Work Areas2002In: International Sociological Association, 2002Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Transition to a post-industrial society has implied great changes, including partial dissolution of existing value systems and of btraditional unitary conceptions regarding work, identity, rationality, truth and morality. Increased globalization, faster communication and, not least, greater mobility between different nations and cultures have caused changes of traditional value systems. Many people today, especially young people, experience difficulty defining moral questions and values which they find complicated and hard to agree on. However, interest in moral and ethical questions has not diminished. On the contrary, as traditional basic moral values have begun to dissolve, people are becoming forced to reflect upon their own personal responsibility to other people and how society is actually functioning on an ethical plane. Research today shows that new patterns of working life with increased flexibility, but also accompanying stress and uncertainty are a consequence of deep structural changes. This has consequences for human identity, which is exposed to fragmentation and disconnectedness. The ethic dimension of the human character is expressed by loyalty, trust and mutual interaction, which are not easy to maintain today in working life. The changes affecting working life can also be noticed in other social areas - school, family and social interaction as a whole. A resulting powerlessness and marginalization from traditional support systems characterizes the social situation of many young people. The present study investigates how young people in western Sweden reason, think and act based on their conception of the world of morality. Young people from different work areas are being interviewed - from industry, a computer company, health care and adult education. Relevant concepts are authority, self-respect, deviation, trust, strength-weakness, solidarity and compassion.

Function Based Manning and Aspects of Flexibility2010In: WMU Journal of Maritime Affairs (JoMA), ISSN 1651-436X, E-ISSN 1654-1642, Vol. 9, no 1, p. 121-133Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the article is to examine the concept of flexibility from a shipping perspective. Flexibility is examined in order to develop strategies, theoretical and applicable, in the field of Function Based Manning (FBM), for achieving optimized manning, which is not the same as reduced manning, with a healthy crew. This is a complex concept in many aspects. Based on research on working life and work organizations conducted by social scientists, two aspects of flexibility are examined; functional flexibility including job enrichment and competence training, and working time flexibility. These issues are analyzed from a shipping perspective. The concept is double-edged in the sense that it entails both having flexibility and being flexible. Does flexibility only serve the interests of the employer? Or, do workers also benefit from flexibility? By combining these two aspects of flexibility, a win-win situation benefiting both employers and employees can be achieved. This article highlights and discusses strategies intended to promote the implementation of amodel of optimized manning.

Functions, performances and perceptions of work on ships2014In: WMU Journal of Maritime Affairs (JoMA), ISSN 1651-436X, E-ISSN 1654-1642, Vol. 13, no 2, p. 231-250Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The demands for greater efficiency and increased profitability in shipping have increased with hardened competition. In recent years major reductions in manning have been made. When the STCW Convention was revised in 1995, this led to changes in terms of the organization of work on board. By using a functional approach, it became possible to handle current demands that all tasks on board are founded on competency-based skills. This article reports the results from an investigation of work functions performed on board ships. The aim was to investigate how these functions are performed today and how marine officers perceived this. Main questions were as follows: How do officers handle the working situation with a reduced crew? Which job functions do they have and how are these performed? How do officers experience the work situation on board? Field studies, involving participant observation and interviews on various types of vessels were conducted and issues were illuminated and analyzed from a socio-technical perspective. The results revealed some specific areas. Reduced crews highlight the need for the right kind of knowledgeable people. Not everyone can be good at everything, maybe not even within their own profession. The predominating issue is about the increased administrative work and the lack of skills development. A continuous professional development should be part of the work and a planned activity. Vessel crews are trying to create flexible solutions for performing the work on board. They are doing this in various ways, depending on the number of the crew, the leadership and the specific vessel culture.

Safety on passenger ferries from catering staff’s perspective2016In: Social Sciences, ISSN 2076-0760, E-ISSN 2076-0760, Vol. 5, no 3Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The majority of employees on passenger ferries consist of the catering staff: those who operate in restaurants, shops, and in the hotel on board. Research on this category is scant. The aim of this study is to investigate the catering staff’s experiences and perceptions of safety practice on board passenger ferries. The methods are semi-structured interviews and a qualitative content analysis of official documents and research articles. Results: Increased safety regulations and directives on an international and a national level have taken place after the major ferry disasters of late 1990s. Changes in the safety organization on the passenger ferries have resulted in more involvement of the catering crew in safety on board. Safety awareness and the way the catering staff think about safety have improved. The risk of terrorism has further reinforced safety awareness. A clear challenge for safety work on ferries is the reduction of catering crew. The transition to job flexibility for catering crew may constitute risk factors regarding safety and security. © 2016 by the author.
