Legacies of colonialism in postcolonial Africa: a comparative case study on how different colonial legacies of eurocentrism and colonial stereotypes are represented in Moroccan and South African contemporary history school textbooks.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a descriptive study that is aided by the theories of representation and post colonialism, which aims to compare how different the colonial legacies of British and French eurocentrism and colonial stereotypes are represented in contemporary Moroccan and South African history school textbooks. By aiming to incorporate the wealth of international scholarship knowledge on eurocentric perspectives and colonial stereotypes in school textbooks. This thesis indicates how postcolonial theory and in this case eurocentrism, often ignores the fact that different legacies in Europe have different understandings of the representation of history, colonialism and finally the representation of the oriental "other" and the black "other". The qualitative content analysis method aids the comparative analysis in studying the underlying meanings, motives and purposes within the text, to assist in understanding, if there are and if so, how these eurocentric legacies are still perpetuated in contemporary Moroccan and South African history textbooks. To conclude, this study demonstrates that the British representations are illustrated and discussed through a critical perspective in the South African textbooks, while the Moroccan textbooks are mainly dominated by the French representations.

The Magic Formula & Net-Nets: Vilken av dessa strategier har resulterat i bäst avkastning mellan 2007 och 2017?2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this work, the two investment strategies Magic Formula and Net-Nets, are compared against each other to find out which them has achieved the best return between 2007 and 2017 in the Swedish market. The two strategies are also set against the Swedish indices OMXS30, OMX Stockholm Largecap and OMX Stockholm Midcap, because the selection of companies included in the strategies is medium and large companies. Data have been obtained to calculate the Capital Asset Pricing Model, CAPM, and Fama French three factor model, FF3, performance measurements such as Sharpe ratio and Treynor ratio, and to perform regressions. The result shows that the strategy that is both most diversified and has achieved the best return is the Magic Formula.

Giltigheten av Okuns lag i Sverige: En empirisk analys på makronivå med tillämpning av gapversionen av Okuns lag2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the long-run and the short-run relationship between unemployment and real GDP using Swedish data for the period 1995-2015. Specifically, we use cointegration approach and error correction to examine the validity of the gap version of Okun's law. The results show that the negative relationship between unemployment and GDP which Okun's law is based on is present in the Swedish economy for the selected time period. The survey also shows that there is a long run relationship between the variables.

Gender and self-representation of political leadership skills: The case of Hillary Clinton2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The following bachelor thesis is, with the help of Gender Role Congruity Theory of Prejudice and Gender Communication Style theory, analyzing the case of Hillary Clinton in relation to masculine and feminine leadership style. More specifically, it examines 1) To what extent is Hillary Clinton adopting a feminine or masculine leadership style during the 2008 campaign? 2) To what extent is Hillary Clinton adopting a feminine or masculine leadership style during the 2016 campaign? 3) Are there any changes in her approach, given that she lost the nomination in 2008 and won in 2016? The thesis is a single case study with a qualitative content analysis. The data selection which is analyzed in the research constitutes Hillary Clinton's transcribed campaign remarks from her two presidential election campaigns, 2008 and 2016. Our research concludes that Hillary Clinton uses a rather mixed leadership style during both campaigns. Although, we can conclude that Hillary Clinton's general leadership style shifted from being more influenced by masculine traits in 2008 to slightly more feminine traits in 2016.

Automation of Income Support in the Public Social Services: A Case Study of an Innovation that is Still Struggling2019In: Uddevalla Symposium 2019: : Unlocking the Potential of Regions Through Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Revised papers first presented at the 22nd Uddevalla Symposium 27-29 June, 2019, L'Aquila, Italy / [ed] Iréne Bernhard, Trollhättan: University West , 2019, p. 187-204Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Digitalization of public services has been high up on the political agenda in Sweden, with considerable efforts that accompany other initiatives to reform and modernize production of welfare services and their administration. Digital solutions are usedto build both technical and organizational innovations in public services, as well asin bureaucratic decision-making. The "Digital first principle" is guiding the European policies in the field and is also central in the Swedish digitalization strategy for public administration. This means that the contact between the citizens, the companies or other society actors, and the public sector authorities shall initially and to largest possible extent occur digitally.

A digital innovation that is currently spreading among Swedish municipalities is automatizing social assistance services mainly addressing income support for vulnerable citizens. In a context of nationally highly regulated income support schemes, the municipalities manage the digitalization of services highly differently, coping with inherent tensions in relation to their local autonomy. We have conducted a long-term case study following such an implementation case in amedium size Swedish municipality. Based on interviews, observations and workshops we can conclude that the implementation is hampered since it is not focusing on the core to coach for self-support and that it even made the system less transparent. This indicates that the principle 'digital first' has to be embedded into the core focus of the service and not address shallow interfaces.

Think Tanks and Immigration: A comparative study on how the think tanks Motpol, Timbro and Arena Idé frame immigration in Sweden2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Think tanks are important social and political actors in the Swedish society because of their increasing exposure in the media. Immigration is a highly politicized issue in Sweden today, especially due to the refugee crisis of 2015 and the upcoming elections of 2018. Our thesis studies how immigration is framed by one specific actor in Sweden, namely think tanks, which attempt to influence policy-making and public opinion. While the field of research on policy advice institutions is rather significant in the American context, studies on Swedish think tanks are still rather scarce. From a research perspective this topic is of great importance because think tanks work behind the scenes, and our thesis helps expose their agenda. The aim of this thesis is to explore how three established Swedish think tanks with diverging ideological positions, Motpol, Timbro and Arena Idé frame immigration. We do so through a comparative small-N study and with the use of textual analysis. The analytical framework is based on Robert Entman’s version of framing theory and the three ideologies far-right, liberalism and socialism help us position the studied think tanks. Our analysis shows that the three think tanks differ in some respects from their ideological ideal type when framing immigration in Sweden.

Småhusförsäljningar i Göteborgs kommun: Fastighetsmäklare eller privat?2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyse if there is a difference in the sale price between sales through a real estate broker and sales managed privately. The real estate broker will from now on be referred to as the broker. This study targets the residential real estate market in the municipal of Gothenburg, and processes data from 1,918 house sales in the municipal of Gothenburg, of type code 220, under the year 2013, both sales with a broker and sales done privately. The Gothenburg area has been chosen because no other study on this topic has been made for this region. The data is gathered from the statistic company Värderingdata that specifies in collecting statistics over residential real estate sales and condominium sales in Sweden. The result of this study is found by detecting the effects of choice between intermediaries that have been used and make a comparison between the purchase coefficient for real estate properties sold privately or through a broker to see the differences in the selling prices. For this analysis, the assess value and the selling price has been applied in several bivariate regression analyses. To examine if the assess value is a reliable dependent variable to use as a base in the regressions in this study; a hedonic pricing theory has been applied. In accordance with this theory, a multivariate regression analysis has been applied. In the regression the assess value is held as a dependent variable and construction year, living area, subface area, plot areal, standard point and congregation are held as independent variables. The multivariat regression analysis illustrates to what degree every variable affects the assess value.

The Assad regime in the eyes of the Swedish media: A comparative study of how Swedish media represents the Assad regime2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to describe how the Swedish media have represented the Assad regime, and if the Swedish media representation towards the Assad regime has changed or not. By using Carol Bacchi`s represented to be theory, and framing theory to frame the data. More specifically this thesis examines (1) what kind of regime is the Assad regime represented to be? Is it a religious, democratic, ethnic, undemocratic or something else, (2) what are the causes for the regime´s Actions represented to be?. (3) What is the relation between Syria and other countries represented to be?. This study uses a qualitative approach to conduct a comparative study by comparing the data from two different time periods, 2000-2010 before the civil war in Syria, and the second period 2011-2018 from the start of the conflict in Syria. By looking at newspaper articles from the two Swedish newspapers, Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter. This study shows that the Swedish media represented the Assad regime as a as a Religious, undemocratic and political regime between the period of 2000-2010, but during the period of 2011-2018 the Swedish media represented the Assad regime as an undemocratic regime. This study also shows that Swedish media’s representation of the Assad regime has changed, events like the shooting of demonstrators, chemical attacks. The Swedish media presentation of the Assad regime has shifted, from representing the Assad regime as a religious, undemocratic and political regime, shifting to represent the Assad regime as a more extreme undemocratic regime.

Hur påverkar de svenska hushållens skuldsättning konsumtionen i Sverige?2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

We have for the past few years been able to see a development in Sweden where both household consumption and debt have increased. Consumption has been shown to represent a big part of the country’s GDP and played a vital role in its recovery from the financial crisis 2008. At the same time debt among households can be considered to be a potential risk factor in society and a contributing factor to financial crisis. Hence the relationship between these two variables is of interest to examine. A quantitative analysis will be performed in this study to examine how debt affects consumption among households in Sweden. The dataset used in this analysis reaches from the first quarter 1997 to the fourth quarter 2017. Both a multiple regression without time lags and a time series regression with three time lags will be performed to examine this relationship. The result is that debt affects consumption negatively in both regressions. Also, it is shown to be likely that consumption is influenced by debt through several variables and that debt is influenced by other variables making it a part of those variables effect on consumption. The study indicates that the relationship between debt and consumption is a complex subject which need further study.

Erlander VS Tito: A comparative analysis of ideology2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis intends to do an analysis of the socialist ideology in former Yugoslavia and Sweden during the time 1948 until 1962. The analysis is done on 8 political speeches each, from the former president of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito and from the former prime minister of Sweden, Tage Erlander. We have specified our analysis on five certain policy areas which are: labour market, welfare, foreign policy, democracy and national identity. The aim of the study is to find what kind of similarities and differences that can be found in the speeches, in relation to socialist values. The reason for analysing the views from these two politicians’, is because both claim to be socialist. The study shows that the socialist ideology in Sweden and Yugoslavia, have both similarities and differences. Both Erlander and Tito stem from a Marxist idea tradition which is evident in how they advocate for economic socialism, the labour theory and for the overall implementation of socialism in their respective nation. The main differences that is evident from their speeches is how they look upon the control of government, something which makes them very different in terms of socialist values. Erlander is advocating for a social democratic socialist model which is controlled by the people in a democratic manner, whereas Tito is advocating for a revolutionary, soviet-like socialism that is controlled by himself and the party he represents. The differences and similarities in the socialist values becomes apparent in the different policy areas. Where in some areas, the socialist values differ a lot and in some, less.

The justifications of restrictions within migrations policies since 2015: A comparative case study regarding the securitization of migrants in Sweden and the United Kingdom2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study seeks to describe how restrictions on migration are being justified in Sweden and the United Kingdom, and in what ways those justifications are linked to security issues.

The Copenhagen school's securitization theory, which deals with the processes of treating political issues as urgent threats to legitimize extraordinary measures, is applied as the theoretical framework. Swedish and British governments' approaches are compared by looking at statements in Parliaments, official speeches by government leaders, migration laws, and other official policy documents, as these two states have significant similarities, but they also have policy differences.

Findings suggest that after 2015, Swedish and British states have framed migration as a threat towards their societies and sovereignty as states and a security discourse have been used to justify stricter migration policies.

"We face neither East nor West; We face forward": A study about policy implementation to receive Chinese Foreign Direct Investments in Ghana2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Bachelor thesis focuses on examining the Ghanaian state's policies regarding inward Foreign Direct Investments and furthermore the policy implementation to attract and receive FDI, the question asked is What policy choices have been implemented by Ghana to attract Chinese FDI?

This thesis employs a single case study design with a qualitative approach as it seeks to draw upon Liberal IPE and RAM to understand the policy choices in attracting FDI, more specifically how Ghana has shaped their policies. When conducting the analysis, the thesis assembles documents, both primary and secondary data to be able to answer the research question. The documents used for gathering data is from Ghana's government as well as governmental organisations, governmental policies and official statistics to peer reviewed articles and organisational data. This enables the thesis to find empirical evidence to support the aims of the conducted research. Moreover, secondary data will be used to situate, contextualize and present the findings.

The main problem seen is how the policy behaviour of governments is conducted to receive FDI in this trudge. The solution to the problem is presented to be the policy decision taken to open markets and welcoming Foreign Direct Investment, through reforms aimed at both domestic companies and market as well as to the global markets and actors.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to get an overview on the proportion of the house market and of the leisure property in Tanum municipality which is acquired by the Norwegians, in turn to see how and if they affect the pricing of real estate in the municipality? To investigate this issue we have been using information from Värderingsdata and Booli on all the single-family and leisure property transfers during our analysis period 2010-2013. The analysis shows that the exchange rate has a negative correlation to the purchase price, which means that if the Norwegian crown increase the property prices fall. Furthermore, this analysis shows that the acquisition which has been done, that intends to use as permanent households sells cheaper than the leisure properties. The results show that the Norwegian citizens pays more for their acquisitions than other purchaser. The conclusion and the results is based on the hedonic model of prices where a regression analysis been produced. The result of our analysis shows that the variables that mainly affects the prices of the house markets are the coastal view and the living space of the house, also the Norwegians has a big positive impact.

Is the Swedish krona predictable?2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The paper studies the ex-post forecasting ability for the Swedish krona against the American dollar, Canadian dollar, Norwegian krone, British pound and the Japanese yen over the period February 1998 to January 2017 for most of the exchange rates, using famous economic models: Purchasing Power Parity and Quasi-reduced form1. The performance of these models is compared against two specified benchmarks: driftless random walk and interest rate parity. The examined period divided into two samples, in-sample which estimated using ordinary least squares, and out-of-sample and estimated using rolling regression. Afterward, the ot-of-sample forecasts results evaluated using accuracy and usefulness criterias at forecast horizons of three and six months. The evaluation results show that there is no particular economic model can consistently beat the both benchmarks or can consistently put the investors on the right side of the market.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the determinants of regional unemployment in Sweden during the period 2009-2013. By collecting data we have studied six explanatory parameters covering the financial and social factors. By using Aragon's (2003) model, we studied six variables and examined what impact they had on the regional unemployment. The variables were the number of companies, number of inhabitants, proportion of foreign born, the percentage who are college-educated, average age and median income. The results of the study show that there is a relationship between the variables and the level of unemployment in the regions. The variables that have a statistically significant effect on regional unemployment are proportion of foreign born and median income.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this empirical study has been to draw a conclusion about whether actively managed funds outperform the market or not. This study is based on the following two questions:

    1. Does an actively managed fund provide a higher risk-adjusted net return than the indices OMXS30 and OMXSBGI? and 2. Is there any correlation between Swedish Actively managed equity funds' fees and their excess return?

Fourteen funds were selected and compared to the indices OMXS30 and OMXSBGI. The period choosen is between 2007-04-04 and 2016-04-04, which resulted in 107 observations as we studied the data on a monthly basis. The model used is CAPM and the risk-adjusted performance measures were Jensen's alpha and Sharpe ratio. The results given from CAPM and sharpe ratio showed that funds on average perform better than OMXS30, but not OMXSBGI. However, the results for CAPM show lack of significance. The conclusions drawn from this study is that actively managed funds can not be proved to have a higher risk-adjusted net return than the indices OMXS30 and OMXSBGI. This study also shows a negative correlation between the funds' fees and their alfa-values.

Metoder för nedskrivningsprövningar: En studie med inriktning på bostadsrättsföreningar i Dalsland ochTrestadsområdet2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to gain knowledge of the methods used to determine if there are grounds for impairment losses on properties of housing associations in Dalsland and the district of Trestad. The study was conducted through a qualitative approach in which interviews were conducted with economists and accountants working for housing associations in Dalsland and the district of Trestad. Real estate agents and bank clerks were also interviewed. To determine if an impairment of an asset should be made the asset must be valued. It has over the years been discussed on many different methods for valuing assets. The two main focuses in asset valuation is measured at historical cost or fair value. In theory, I adopt two different methods of testing for impairment; a method in which cash flow is used and a method of market valuation. Cash flow method is presented as a method where future cash flows are converted to present value. Market value method means that the properties are compared with similar properties sold in the area. Both these methods can be seen as a form of fair value. Through the empirical study shows that, in practice, three different methods are used for testing for impairment of properties with housing associations in Dalsland and the district of Trestad. Cash flows is used but by making use of historic in the form of receipts and payments in a given period. Market valuation is also a method that is applied in practice, as well as a third method in which the assessed value is compared to the ratable value. It is however disagreement about how the market valuation is made. Previous research presented in this work show that the companies that made the write-downs either had financial problems or tried to even out the performance of the company through the write-downs. With help of the empirical material I collected I can state that write-downs of the housing associations in principle are made only if the association has financial problems. The only thing that otherwise could lead to an impairment loss is if a property is damaged by a fire or if there for example would be a construction of railway next to the property.

The Nature of euroskepticism:: A Comparative Study of media framing of Euro in Great Britain and Sweden2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines what frames is used in editorials and debate articles in the chosen newspapers; From Sweden, Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet, from Great Britain, The Guardian and Financial Times. Both Sweden and Great Britain are members of the European Union but has not yet implemented Euro. The study examines how newspapers in each country frame Euro. Four different frames were used:

National identity, Democratic Sovereignty, Economic Growth and Social Welfare. These frames are used to see how writers of editorials and debate articles applied them in order to persuade the citizens of Sweden and Great Britain. Bacchis' "What is the Problem Represented to be", was used to get a better understanding of the framing methods, where we analyse the data by stating problem, cause and solution. This study has contributed with a comparative case study to a limited field of research. Studies on this subject have been done before, however, not a comparative study using these cases, Sweden and Great Britain. The question answered is if there are any similarities and differences regarding media framing between Sweden and Great Britain. The result differs from frame to frame.

How well can a simple monetary model explain the depreciation of the Swedish Krona2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the reasons for the fluctuations in the Swedish exchange rate for the period 2005 to 2014. Mainly, focus will be on the nominal bilateral exchange rate measured against the dollar. Although, as an attempt to extend the model and get a better result, the effective Swedish exchange rate, measured as the total competitive weight-index, will also be tested. A simple monetary model, of the Mundell-Fleming approach, and a vector error correction model is used to find the factors of the depreciation, specifically, during the last six months. The result found in the study is that the theory explains what has actually happened in the economy well, and is valid when trying to explain the volatility of the exchange rate. A decrease in the interest rate causes a depreciation in the exchange rate to a great extent, together with an increase in inflation and a decrease in national income.

Tobin Q's påverkan på nybyggnationer av småhus i Sverige2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we analyze the relations between the profitability, as described by Tobin Q, and newly constructed houses in Sweden for the period 1998 to 2014. In addition, we include two counties with the lowest and the highest Q-values, namely, Stockholm and Västerbotten, to highlight the regional differences. We found, through regression analyses, that there is a positive relation between profitability and the newly constructed houses for the whole country and Stockholm, but not for Västerbotten.

Domestic vs international diversification: An empirical study on the performance of Swedish mutual funds2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper evaluates the performance of Swedish mutual funds with different investment strategies between April 2014 and March 2019. The purpose was to study whether or not international diversification is profitable for the Swedish investor in terms of the risk-return criterion. To establish the relationship between risk and expected return, the Capital Asset Pricing Model and the Fama and French three-factor model were used, in line with previous studies. The performance of the funds was evaluated by adopting different performance measures such as Sharpe ratio and Jensen's alpha. Data was collected as time series for 30 mutual funds registered in Sweden on a monthly basis, using DataStream and Kenneth R. French's data library. From the elaborated data along with descriptive statistics, the Sharpe ratio could be calculated. Jensen's alpha along with the other coefficients within these models was estimated using ordinary least squares (OLS). The comparison between the performance measures of Sharpe ratio and Jensen's alpha with one another, among the fund categories, does give results that collaborate. The highest risk adjusted return determined by Sharpe ratio as well as the best performance according to Jensen's alpha, was experienced by equity funds investing only on the domestic market. Thus, international diversification is not profitable for the Swedish investor according to this study.

Sectoral Equity Returns in Europe: An Empirical Study on Reducing Portfolio Risk2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the performances of 16 key equity sectors in the European market. Hereby, the daily sectoral equity indices are used for the period 2000-2017. Different performance measures have been used, including the Sharpe-ratio and Jensen’s Alpha. In addition, the cross-sectoral and cross-countries return correlations have been examined. Furthermore, calendar anomalies have been researched and portfolio optimization techniques have been used to illustrate different diversification scenarios. Four structural models have been tested and the classical linear regression model with the ordinary least squares technique has been used to run regressions, both on the aggregated Europe equity index as well as the sectors individually. This research finds that Consumer Staples/Chemicals have on average the highest risk-to-return ratio and IT/Banks the lowest. Moreover, Health Care and Biotechnology & Pharmaceuticals, Financials and Banks were the most correlated while Banks and Leisure, Materials and Leisure were the least correlated sectors. This research also finds that the aggregated European equity index shows a higher correlation with the sectors Banks, Financials and Industrials than the aggregated US and aggregated World indices do. Finally, it is shown that the average return correlations across sectoral indices are lower than the average return correlations across developed countries indices within the European equity market.

Hur den ekonomiska tillväxten påverkas av inkomstojämlikheter: En studie på regional nivå i Sverige2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine the relationship between economic growth and income inequality in Swedish municipalities during 2012 using cross-sectional data. The study uses the measure of economic growth as the total wage sum of the municipality and income inequality as the Gini-coefficient. A subsidiary purpose was to investigate whether there existed varying relationships between the variables in rich and poor municipalities. The study was based on a regression model from Cialani (2013) where several variables was collected and used. Some exchanges were made based on what we felt was more relevant to the study. The variable to be explained in the analysis is the economic growth and this is done by the use of several explanatory variables which are average income, the Gini-coefficient, the municipal tax rate, education costs, elderly care costs, family care costs, total cost per capita, the percentage of highly educated workers, the percentage of unemployment, the percentage of seniors, population density and two dummy variables to distinguish political importance and the difference between a rich and a poor municipality.

The results were unexpected since we ended up with a negative relationship between income inequality and economic growth as it differs from earlier research done at the regional level in Sweden (Cialani 2013, Nahum 2005) in which they found a positive relationship. Regarding the subsidiary purpose of the study, we found that the negative effect had stronger impact in the poor municipalities than in the rich.

Bostadsrättsprisets utveckling i Göteborg: En tidsserieanalys om det är en prisbubbla på bostadsrättsmarknaden i Göteborgs kommun2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to analyze whether Gothenburg's tenant-owned housing market is in a housing bubble and its possible definition of it. This thesis aims to study the timeframe between 1998-2018 and focuses only on condominiums. The purpose of the thesis is to determine whether the price development can be explained by the factors population, repo rate, new constructions, employment and income. We will also evaluate whether price developments have followed the trend within the theory for identifying a price bubble. To try answering the questions by a quantities study, a multiple regression model was used. From it, our result and conclusion are linked. Based on our used theories from Stiglitz (1990) and Lind (2008), no price bubble has been identified on the tenant-owner market in the city of Gothenburg. However, in Lind's five-step theory, some criteria are met regarding the existence of the price bubble. In order to fully evaluate the theory, a qualitative study is required, which is not included during our study period.

    Abstract [en]

This study compares the price development on the house market in Jönköping and Stockholm County during the time period 2003-2012. Price development for the period examined have shown a rising trend, however, with a slowdown after the 2008 financial crisis. The study examines the extent to which four key macroeconomic factors affect price development in the housing market for the respective counties. The result obtained in this study is that the price of real estate in Jönköping County is affected by classical macroeconomic variables such as mortgage interest rate and inflation. However for Stockholm County price development is affected primarily by changes in population and changes in salary.

Förhållandet mellan risk och avkastning hos svenska försäkringsfonder: En kvantitativ studie med stöd av CAPM modellen2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The background to this study is based on the assumption of a positive relationship between risk and return, which many people believes in. The most common mutual funds form in Sweden today is the insurance funds, which affects almost everyone in one way or another. Therefore it's interesting to analyze this relationship on this type of mutual funds. A dominant model in financial economics, which have been used in the study, is the CAPM model which describes the relationship between expected return and market risk of financial assets.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the connection between risk and return of a number of chosen Swedish insurance funds, in order to find out if there was a positive significant relationship between two different risk measures (standard deviation and beta) and return. To be able to accomplish this one simple linear regression and one multiple linear regression which is based on the CAPM model, have been used. The study investigates this relationship in three different time periods (2004-2013, 2009-2013 and 2011-2013) and was based on quarterly data for the Treasury bonds and the benchmark and also annual historical average return and standard deviation. The results presented a positive significant relationship for the funds with the lower risk, both in the simple and the multiple regressions. For the funds with the higher risk no positive significant relationship was found, neither in the simple or the multiple regressions. The conclusion came down to that there was a positive significant relationship between risk and return for the low-risk funds, but not for the high-risk funds

The Contested Concept of Democracy: An illustration of the meaning of democracy in Argentina2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Ideas are important to the world of politics and they play a key role in defining and understanding the meaning of concepts. Studying present ideas and discussions about a concept is important as it helps us understand more about the ideas and approaches that are mediated to the general public and hence more about the meaning of the concept at large. Political scientists argue that democracy is a contested concept whose meaning is not given. Yet, little is known about ideas about democracy in Latin America at large and ideas about democracy in Argentina in particular. This study examines Argentinian newspapers as an arena for ideas to understand more about the meaning of democracy in Argentina. The data was collected through qualitative content analysis of articles from 2013 from three nationally distributed newspapers with different positions on the ideological spectrum. Two dimensions of democratic deepening and ideals types were used to analyse the data. The study shows that the understanding that Argentinians have of the concept of democracy seems to differ from a more traditional reductionist approach, hence also the general approach that is generally applied when studying democracy. Analysing the results will lead on to a discussion on improvement of democratic practices and new ideas of how popular sovereignty could be exercised through more grass-root participation and extension of democratic practices.

Värdepåverkande faktorer vid värdering av bostadsrätter i Uddevalla kommun2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When a condominium shall be sold in the market a value judgment is performed in order to create a market-based pricing as a basis for the transfer. It is important to know the factors that influence the price and what potential buyers are willing to pay for different qualities and therefore leads to this thesis problem; which characteristics can explain and have the highest effect on the price of a condominium in Uddevalla? To answer the question has empirical data on 1,578 condominium transfers that occurred during the period 2008 to 2013 received.

After considerations the ideal method is based on hedonic price theory, where the price implicitly reveals consumer preferences. By use of the logarithmic regression model the results obtained by multiple regression analysis where consumer preferences about different qualities have been identified and analyzed, as well as if population and the repo rate affect the price. In addition, the thesis will find out if the price tends to be higher during some of the year's four seasons.

The thesis conclusions are that living space is the variable that has the greatest impact on price on condominiums in Uddevalla. Because rooms tend to increase with increased living space, the willingness to pay more for each additional room also increases the price. The condominiums location and monthly fee is also crucial for the price. If the distance from the center and monthly fee increase, it reduces buyers' willingness to pay. Further conclusions about the factors that affect the price are that consumers are willing to pay more for newly constructed condominiums and prefer to stay relatively high in the residential buildings

Cost-effectiveness analysis of internet-mediated cognitive behavioural therapy for depression in the primary care setting: results based on a controlled trial2018In: BMJ Open, ISSN 2044-6055, E-ISSN 2044-6055, Vol. 8, no 6, article id e019716Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective To perform a cost-effectiveness analysis of a randomised controlled trial of internet-mediated cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) compared with treatment as usual (Tall) for patients with mild to moderate depression in the Swedish primary care setting. In particular, the objective was to assess from a healthcare and societal perspective the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of ICBT versus TaU at 12 months follow-up. Design A cost-effectiveness analysis alongside a pragmatic effectiveness trial. Setting Sixteen primary care centres (PCCs) in south-west Sweden. Participants Ninety patients diagnosed with mild to moderate depression at the PCCs. Main outcome measure ICERs calculated as (Cost(ICBT)-Cost(TaU))/(Health outcome(ICBT)-Health outcome(TaU))=Delta Cost/Delta Health outcomes, the health outcomes being changes in the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) score and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). Results The total cost per patient for ICBT was 4044 Swedish kronor (SEK) ((sic)426) (healthcare perspective) and SEK47679 ((sic)5028) (societal perspective). The total cost per patient for TaU was SEK4434 ((sic)468) and SEK50 343 ((sic)5308). In both groups, the largest cost was associated with productivity loss. The differences in cost per patient were not statistically significant. The mean reduction in BDI-ll score was 13.4 and 13.8 units in the ICBT and Tall groups, respectively. The mean QALYs per patient was 0.74 and 0.79 in the ICBT and TaU groups, respectively. The differences in BDI-11 score reduction and mean QALYs were not statistically significant. The uncertainty of the study estimates when assessed by bootstrapping indicated that no firm conclusion could be drawn as to whether ICBT treatment compared with Tall was the most cost-effective use of resources. Conclusions ICBT was regarded to be as cost-effective as TaU as costs, health outcomes and cost-effectiveness were similar for ICBT and TaU, both from a healthcare and societal perspective.

Muslims in Swedish Newspapers: A Comparative Study of the Contextual Positioning of Muslims in Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens ETC2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis analyzes the contexts in which Muslims are mentioned in the conservative newspaper Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) and socialist newspaper Dagens ETC. This research contributes to the field of Swedish media representation of Muslims by analyzing in what context Muslims are mentioned in two different newspapers with different ideologies due to presentation of Muslim related news. The thesis uses an analytical framework based on war/terror-context, far right/populist right context, fundamentalist religious-context, non-fundamentalist religious context, social and cultural problem-context, social and cultural possibility-context. The reason we have chosen the year of 2015 is because there has been many events in news reporting which can be linked to Muslims such as: the growth of ISIS, The refugee crisis and Paris bombings, the Burma crisis and the recruit of European Muslims to terrorist groups to name a few. The analysis is performed through combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative methods that are used in the analysis are based on the occurrence of the word 'Muslim' in each article, and from there in which context the word is mentioned. The results show that Muslims were more represented fundamentalist, far right/populist and war/terror contexts in the articles from SvD compared to the articles from Dagens ETC. This research tends to contribute a small contribution to the field of the representation of Muslims in Swedish media by analyzing the contextual positioning of Muslims in Swedish media news articles. We acknowledge that this research does not provide with an exclusive and general depiction of media representation of Muslims in Sweden however the research contributes with a part of the Swedish media representation of Muslims.

Distance from insolvency in the Swedish banks: A panel analysis of the four largest banks in Sweden2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

After the resent financial crisis in 2007-2009, the terminology of 'too-big-to-fail' has become an increasingly debated topic around the world, referring to risk-taking by banks that causes systemic risk due to their size and complexity. Large capital contribution packages, implicit guarantees, has been paid out in order to prevent financial meltdown while giving banks and its creditors the incentive to take on higher risk, causing moral hazard. This thesis aims to determine what bank activities that influence implicit guarantees that is measured by banks risk-taking, distance from insolvency, in the four largest bank in Sweden during the time period 2001 to 2015. By a panel regression analysis, we can see that total asset and debt securities influences the banks risk-taking. From the findings we can conclude that the problem of 'too-big-to-fail' exists in Sweden.

Swedish identity and cultural clashes: -Nationalism, multiculturalism, racism in the ideology of the Sweden Democrats2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the latent meaning of Sweden Democrats (SD) ideology. In order to do so we analyze how the relationship between nationalism and multiculturalism is constructed. By examining the relationship between nationalism and multiculturalism, one can determine if SD ideology point to racist elements or not. Choosing a single case study provides a more in-depth understanding of SD ideology. Based on the ontology of social constructivism and theories of nationalism, multiculturalism and racism, a qualitative textual analysis has been conducted in order to describe how these concepts are constructed in SD ideology. This analysis shows that there is an existing relationship between nationalism and multiculturalism, where SD enhances their nationalistic ideas and beliefs upon the negative ideas of multiculturalism. Through the relationship between nationalism and multiculturalism, one can find racist elements in SD ideology. SD categorizes individuals based on culture and justifies different treatment according to one's culture. Some cultures will be treated worse than others, which points to cultural racism.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Tax Agency is responsible for controlling as well as informing and assisting the taxpayers. Even if these tasks are not necessarily contradictory, they can be difficult to perform all at once. In their performance of duties, tax agency employees have to meet the expectations of the management as well as of the taxpayers. The goal fulfilment of the Tax Agency is contingent on the organisation’s ability to provide a stress-free working environment. Stress may cause physical and psychological problems.

Immigrants' gender norms in integration process: A comparative study of first- and second-generation Somali immigrant women2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to investigate how culture and hence values change in an immigrant group in Sweden and if their understanding of gender changes over generations, by using first- and second-generation Somali immigrants.

The study is a comparative small-N study design and uses a qualitative method of data collection with the help of a focus group interview.

This study employs the theory of agenda setting priming & framing, the aspects of gender and gender ideal types of traditional and liberal gender role ideologies - to explore the differences and similarities of the understanding and importance of gender between the two groups. The analysis was categorized under the first- and second-generation Somalis with subcategorization of the aspects of gender, to have a better structured analysis.

The key findings of this study indicate that the first-generation Somalis are compelled to conform to the liberal mainstream of the Swedish society, whilst keeping their core values such as their religious beliefs. However, they hold their religion to a higher esteem and placed more values on religion than culture. This is so because Somali culture is routed in religion and a lot of their cultural practices are based on religion, as indicated by both groups. Further, none of the aspects of gender raised in this study seems to be of great importance to the participants other than the aspects of clothing which is the wearing of Hijab.

The Detection of Euribor Manipulation in the European Interbank Market2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the possible Euribor manipulation of 23 European panel banks during the years 2005 to 2010. For this purpose, we will investigate two different methodologies. The first approach is a regression analysis which includes stationarity tests. We are expecting a significant break of the 3M Euribor rate with the outbreak of the financial crisis in August 2007. In a second approach we will run a test for variance equivalence between the two spreads, Euribor-OIS and CDS spread. The two spreads should have the same relative risk as their main component which should be reflected in homogeneous variances. By running a classical unit root test, we can detect a significant breakpoint in October 2008. This discrepancy could be a sign of panel banks submitting lower and thereby not trustworthy Euribor rates. This paper further investigates the breakpoint by testing for parameter stability by using the Chow test. Our conclusion is that a possible Euribor manipulation is detected during the crisis period. After running the Levene´s test for variance equivalence, the results indicate significantly different variances which can be a sign for Euribor manipulation. This strengthens the argument that banks may have incentives to manipulate their submitted Euribor rates to maintain their reputation and to improve their trading positions in the financial market. Banks pretend creditworthiness and can hide liquidity shortages by submitting lower Euribor rates.

“Du ved, hvad vi står for!’’ “Au Nom du Peuple!”: A comparative small-N study of Danish People’s Party and Front National in the context of racist and Islamophobic discourses2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to identify the terms of inclusion and exclusion within two right-wing populist parties by the use of a discourse analysis. In relation to the rising populism in modern Europe, right-wing parties have had a rapid increase in their support. More specifically, this thesis aims to examine the discourse of Danish People’s Party and Front National during the period of 2014 to 2018 by asking the questions: 1) How do Danish People’s Party & Front National justify their anti-immigration politics?, 2) What is the significance of racism in this discourse? and 3) What is the significance of Islamophobia in this discourse? We apply two analytical frameworks whereas one is used for finding racist elements while the other is used for finding Islamophobic elements. The first analytical framework is based on a theory provided by van Dijk (1992) and the second is based on a theory provided by Conway (1997). By analyzing speeches and interviews from the two parties, we have been able to conclude whether their politics contain racist and/or Islamophobic elements. For the analysis, a qualitative small-N study has been adapted. Twelve speeches have been coded per party and analyzed. The conclusion for this thesis is that the discourse of both parties consists of both racist and Islamophobic elements, although these discriminatory practices have differentiated based on the party. The Danish People’s Party base their exclusion on clash of civilizations whilst the Front National focus their exclusion based on ethno-nationalism.

There are further two comparative moments that the specific case will be compared to which are stereotypes of; firstly, earlier studies of terrorism generally made by the "other" and secondly, earlier studies of representation of Africa. The research gap is that there is lack of studies concerning media representation of terrorism in Africa, there are studies about media representation of Africa and terrorism individually, however, this combination is absence. The theoretical approaches that are used in the thesis are post-colonial and representation theories which are relevant in order to provide the useful analytical tool to carry out the research. The analytical framework is developed based on earlier studies and theories where three frames are presented; colonial, cultural and religious frame. The method used is a qualitative content analysis where BBC news articles concerning Terrorism in Nigeria are used as data. The thesis finally revealed that there are general similarities to both earlier studies of representation of terrorism and Africa, however, the religious stereotypes which are associated with the general representation of terrorism, were more stable and dominant.

The Libyan slave trade in media: Is the presentation of the causes biased by CNN and Al Jazeera?2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to analyze how CNN and Al Jazeera present the causes of the slave trade in Libya. Our specific research question is “How do CNN and Al-Jazeera present the causes of the slave trade in Libya”. To answer our question, Robert, M. Entman’s approach on framing biases is applied. We chose to include three concepts that are analyzed: framing, priming and agenda setting. The thesis is a comparative case study since we investigated the differences between CNN and Al Jazeera’s presentations of the causes. The slavery in Libya became world news in November of 2017, after CNN's report that revealed the slave auctions. The main problem defined by both news networks is the fact that slavery and slave auctions still exist in the modern day. The framings of the causes concerning the slave trade differ between CNN and Al Jazeera. Al Jazeera presented the slavery as a result of the actions of the Western countries, European countries in particular, while CNN addressed many different factors as causes for the slave trade, primarily the political instability in Libya.

The Nordic Exchange-traded funds performance2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The paper focuses on the performance of the Nordic ETFs presented in Sweden, Norway and Finland, particularly, compares leveraged and equity ETFs. This study evaluates a sample of 12 Nordic ETFs during the period 2014-2019 using Tracking Error, Sortino ratio, Net Asset Value (NAV) premium/discount and the Jensen's alpha approach as the performance measures. The study finds that the Nordic ETFs, on average, underperformed their benchmarks, however, when separating the ETFs into equity and leveraged ETFs, the study reveals that the equity ETFs outperformed their underlying indices. NAV testing notes that most of the time the ETFs are not traded at their NAV. The tracking error magnitude suggests that the Nordic ETFs do not completely replicate their benchmarks. In addition, the leveraged ETFs with the inverse replication strategy have not only the highest tracking error but also the negative Sortino ratios. Moreover, no one ETF could beat the market having either the negative or statistically insignificant alphas. Notably, that the negative and statistically significant alphas mostly belong to the leveraged ETFs.

Populist ideology: A comparative study in order to see if and in that case how characteristics of populist ideology is present in political speeches by Bernie Sanders and Donald J. Trump2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to conduct research within the field of populist ideology and compare left- and right-wing populism by analysing if and in that case how characteristics of populist ideology is present in political speeches. By choosing two contrasting cases, left-wing Bernie Sanders and right-wing Donald J. Trump, it provides a unique comparison since they come from different parts of the political sphere, and this in turn can give a larger chance for generalization to other cases within the field of populist ideology. An analytical framework is constructed based on characteristics of populist ideology and a qualitative analysis is the base for analysing the political speeches of the politicians. The results of the analysis shows that there are characteristics of populist ideology present in the political speeches of Bernie Sanders and Donald J. Trump. The characteristics that are found are being compared between the politicians in the analysis. The analysis shows that there are differences in how the characteristics of populist ideology are present and how the populist ideology is filled with content in their political speeches, as well as how the differences can be connected to their ideological background.

The (re)production of a rape culture through film: Turkish cinema's love affair with rape2017In: Continuum. Journal of Media and Cultural Studies, ISSN 1030-4312, E-ISSN 1469-3666, Vol. 31, no 6, p. 802-819Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sexual violence is a pervasive problem that continues to affect many women’s lives around the world. The cultural environment enables the continued perpetration of these crimes and the (re)production of these cultural environments as well as their subjects through visual arts, particularly cinema. In this article, the mutually constitutive relationship between the rape culture in Turkey and Turkish cinema, with its particular themes and characters, is explored and described in order to shed light upon the social setting that both produces and consumes the rape-themed movies while normalizing and allowing rape.

The role of the European court of human rights in changing gender norms in Turkey: the case of women’s maiden names2019In: Turkish Studies, ISSN 1468-3849, E-ISSN 1743-9663Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The diffusion of international human rights norms through the enforcement of international human rights law by courts has been explored by both scholars of international relations and international law. Turkey, which has been a state party to most international human rights treaties despite being a major violator of human rights, is the case in this paper. It examines norm diffusion in the area of women’s rights through court action in a patriarchal culture protected and represented by a deeply patriarchal state and judiciary. By looking at the legal processes, domestic and international, through which the issue of the right of Turkish women to keep their maiden names after marriage has gone, this paper argues that norm diffusion through court action can be triggered even in difficult cases such as changing gendered norms and describes the conditions and mechanisms that make these changes more likely.
