    Abstract [en]

This study is based on the collaboration processes between primary school and social services and based on how collaboration works in practice between these two organizations. Through a qualitative study in a suburb in western Sweden, we came to the conclusion how people from different professions at primary school and social services experience the interaction process and how they work together to develop collaboration. It also revealed some success factors and shortcomings in cooperation. It clearly demonstrated during the study that collaboration is a time consuming process based on good relationships. Respondents saw the collaboration as an essential resource to meet vulnerable children's needs in the best way.

    Abstract [en]

The point of departure for this study is a need of more knowledge about to which extent and in what way organized meeting places can have a meaning for older persons as a place for social networking. The study was performed with use of interviews and participant observations at two different meeting places run by the municipality. As a first step a content analysis was made based on the empirical data. This analysis showed thatvisits on a more or less regular basis gave a structure to everyday life that felt important for the visitors. The meetings with other old persons contributed to a feeling of social cohesion and replaced experiences of loneliness. These results were significant for both meeting places. As a second step, an analysis linked to theories on social networks gave a more deep knowledge about the essence of the social networks which were developed and the significance of thesenetworks. The analysis shows that most of the networks could be described as thin ties (that is: relatively superficial and noncommittal network ties). These ties could mainly be described in terms of conversation contacts. In spite of that these contacts could be described as thin, they have an emotionalvalue in contributing to a sense of community and safety. Some networks also showed to have a potential for a development towards thin friendship ties.As a summary of the results the most significance of meeting places for older persons were the contribution to give a feeling of being part of a community. This adds a value of meaning and safety in everyday life for older persons. The study shows how important it is to take into consideration to organize meeting places when planning for aging in place for older persons. This could be seen as an important strategy for preventing loneliness and health problems among older people.

Hästunderstödd terapi: En kvalitativ studie om hästars inverkan hos flickor med psykisk ohälsa och självskadebeteende2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study´s intention was to examine the horse assisted therapy´s support or prohibitive effects on the recovery process of girls with psychological non-suicidal self-injury behaviour. The study´s question formulations were; what aspects are supportive or prohibitive in the recovery process. A qualitative method was used to answer the questions within the study; four qualitative interviews were made as a foundation for the work. The informants were all female and over 18 years of age, who lived or had lived at a rehabilitee centre with a focus on horse assisted therapy. The result of the study presents both supportive and prohibitive effects of the treatment.

Supportive aspects of the treatment, found in this study are; it helps to reduce anxiety and lower non-suicidal behaviour in addition lifts confidence. Through respect for horses´ ability to read various state of minds and reflect these as their own, which increases the empathic behaviour of the girls; which makes them reflect about their own behaviour and there by more aware of the consequences of their actions.

Obstructive aspects of the treatment, found in this study are; the size of the animal and flight behaviour may cause fear of injury. An accident during a therapy session may cause mistrust regarding the effect of the therapy and may intervene with the recovery process. The bond between the horse and the girl might grow too strong, and have a negative effect on the girl when the treatment is over or if the horse dies; which would inflict the recovery process.

With support of these results, we conclude that control is an important aspect in the recovery process of girls. All the sub-themes that has been found in the results and analysis can be linked to some sort of control aspect. We have seen that taking control over oneself or a situation helps the recovery process; whilst absence of control may obscure or stop it. Accordingly the control subject may be developable within the social pedagogy field of research. To increase the sense of control can be done in more than one way. A feeling of involvement in both trivial and big decisions may have an positive impact on the recovery process, because it gives a greater sense of control. It can be everything between make part in cooking to be part in their own health- and rehabilitation planning

    Abstract [en]

Background: People with mental disabilities often live in exclusion and regularly find themselves outside of the regular labour market. The lack of work or a meaningful occupation can lead to a deterioration in both health and opportunities for recovery. The present study deals with people with mental disabilities that have a work-focused occupation. The study was carried out in a Fountain House, as a demarcation had to be made to a specific division.Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine what role occupation has in terms of recovery for people with mental disabilities. The questions asked were which elements in occupation might promote recovery and which might prevent, with a focus on participation and meaningfulness in occupation.Method: The study has a qualitative onset. Six semi-structured interviews have been carried out with people involved in a work-focused occupation and that have, as interpreted from the standpoint of an administrative definition, mental disabilities. The analysis work has been made with the help of sentence concentration, and the empiricism has been analysed according to the theoretical outsets of recovery, participation and meaningfulness.Result: As seen from the result, an individual-based meaningful occupation in which the individual fill a function and feel competent, as well as being offered participation and a feeling of community, contribute to a promotion of the recovery of the individual. Furthermore, the result showed that occupation can contribute to a changed self-image and a structure that is of use in a well-functioning everyday life. Another discovery is that conflict is an element in occupation that may prevent recovery, which in turn can affect participation and community negatively, as people may choose to stay at home because of it. It is shown that a lack of economic replacement in occupation can be perceived as negative and constitute an obstruction element for recovery. The knowledge of which elements in occupation that might promote or prevent recovery can be attributed to develop and improve different occupation activities.

Hur arbetar MiniMili för att minska missbruk bland ungdomar i Ale kommun?2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study is to gain a better understanding of how the psykosocialmedicinska reception MiniMili working to reduce youth drug use in Ale municipality and which aspects that promote or hinder this work is perceived. The study is qualitative in nature and includes three semi-structured interviews with personnel at MiniMili as well as a youth in the ongoing treatment process. The result that the present study has generated has shown that the relationship between youth and the processor is considered to be more important than what treatment method is used because it is in relation to young people's motivation for a change process is created. To see youth from a holistic perspective by involving its network, as well as to adapt the aid efforts from the youngster's needs is considered central to promoting treatment activities.

That young people experience a membership in different social contexts are highlighted by both previous research, theoretical starting points as well as respondents to be an important aspect. Man is a gregarious animal and need to experience both the closeness, caring, and community in order to maintain a good health. It is therefore of great importance to develop and create more opportunities for young people to meet in different social arenas. Drugs are becoming more commonplace among young people. Online drug's importance surrounding this development has proven to be great. Online drugs creates an increased supply of psykaktiva substances in the sentence may not be illegal, but in many cases just as dangerous. Drugs are a button press away, and can be ordered straight to your door, making it difficult to catch up with these youngsters. It is therefore very important to highlight this issue.

    Abstract [en]

The study aims to describe, compare, and analyze how managers and basic staff in disability care reflects on education and competence in the organization and from an organizational context explain how the professionalization efforts can be understood at different levels of disability care. Highlighting these questions can stimulate discussion within this field when it comes to the evaluation of competence and skills of staff working with people with various disabilities, which is also sought after in society even more today. The study is qualitative and the result is based on five semi-structured interviews with managers and basic staff in disability care. The interview questions were categorized according to the concepts that are central in this essay: competence, training, professionalism and organization.

The results show that there is some doubt about what a higher competence of personnel in direct contact with the users would mean. Among the basic staff uncertainty seems to be highest. Three different ways of relating to education and competence issues in the organization emerges: advocates of formal knowledge, advocate of practical knowledge and advocate of dialectical knowledge. The study shows some differences among managers and basic staffs attitude where basic staff seem to evaluate the practical knowledge, or dialectical, to a greater extent, while the managers seem to appreciate the theoretical knowledge to a greater extent.

    Abstract [en]

Social Services is the section of society that has main responsibility for making sure children's needs of protection and the family's need of support are seen and met. Research shows that there is a dilemma in the assessment of what can be counted as children's acceptable or unacceptable home situation, but also to some extent there is disagreement between socialworkers about where boundaries for what acceptable parenting is lie. This may constitute a risk detrimental to the child's development and health partly due to which social worker carries out the investigation. In view of the problem area illustrated above, it is important to draw attention to the thoughts of the social worker when assessing adequately good parenthood and where boundaries lie for acceptable parental behaviour. To attain a deeper understanding of how social workers interpret and reason about adequately good parenthood, a qualitative approach with semistructured interviews was used. The study's theoretical reference is based on the object relations theory, Donald W Winnicotts concept 'Good Enough', Kari Killéns definition of parental ability and the concept Phronesis. The information data was coded, categorised, themed and analysed by using the above mentioned theoretical perspectives and earlier research on the subject. Results show that social workers thoughts on adequately good parenting partly are in line with earlier research. They consider that assessments are complex, basing them on knowledge, personal points of reference and regulatory framework. Social workers view parents' ability to maintain continuity and stability over time as an important aspect in making assessments, and also being emotionally available for their child. Other important aspects are parents' ability to put their child's needs before their own and to recognise their own limitations. The ability to have insight permeates all aspects of parenthood.

Kan en kram vara kränkande?: en kvantitativ studie kring sexuella trakasserier mellan elever i gymnasiet2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study has been to investigate how working professionals experience the therapeutic relation, the meaning of trust and the cooperation between them and the adolescents at a SiS-institution. The questions that the study is concentrated on are the following:

    •  How does the professionals create a therapeutic relation to the adolescents at the SiS-institution?
    •  To what extent is the therapeutic relation meaningful between the professionals and the adolescents at the SiS-institution?

In our study we used a qualitative approach with semi structured interviews performed with six of the staff members working at one SiS-institution located in western Sweden. The essay is based on John Bowlby’s attachment theory and Trondman’s concept relational capital and the asymmetric responsibility logic.

Research shows the importance of the therapeutic relations in working with treatment at a SiS-institution. The respondents in the interviews sees creating relations with the adolescents as the most important aspect of their work with them. The adolescents that are staying at the SiS-institution have complex attachment patterns to adults. To re-create bearing relations the professionals have to put the adolescent’s needs in focus and assume adult responsibility. Empirics shows that the professionals have an important role to accept as contact person since they could be the first trustworthy connection in one adolescent’s life.

    Abstract [en]

According to the Swedish law, föräldrabalken, (FB, SFS 1949:381, Kap. 6, 1 §) every child has the right to care, safety and a good upbringing. It’s mainly the child’s guardians who have the primary duty to fulfill these needs but if they are unable to do so then the social service com-mittee has according to the Social Services Act (SoL, SFS 2001:453) a particularly duty to fulfill these needs for children and young adults. If or when a child for various reasons cannot con-tinue to stay with his or her parents then the social service committee has the option of placing the child in foster care. The meaning of foster care according to SoL (SFS 2001:453), Kap. 3 2 §, is a home which is assigned by the social service committee to care for a child or a young adults needs, safety and upbringing doesn’t do this as a line of work. The purpose of our thesis is to study how the foster parents, within the frames of their assignment, experience the contact with the social services. We have chosen to use a phenomenological perspective as a point of view in our thesis. Phenomenology is a philosophical orientation that explores the question of how an individual creates meaning in their own life world. Furthermore we have chosen a qualitative approach with interviews as our main tool. We saw this as an advantage since we during the interviews could choose to further explore, and gain a deeper understanding of, the interviewed persons own experiences and viewpoints. The qualitative interview gave us the possibility to focus on whatever the interviewed person experienced as relevant and important to them (Bryman, 2001).

The analysis revealed that the foster parents were of the opinion that they received to little information, or faulty information, about the child prior to the start of the assignment. The foster parents also experienced differences in the communication with the social services depending on the individual social worker who represented the social services. It was also clear that the treatment and the support received from the social worker were highly relevant to how suc-cessful the assignment was. The foster parents expressed that the support from the social service was insufficient and asked for more education, guidance and a number to call to for immediate counseling outside office hours

    Abstract [en]

In December 2011 Saab Automobile goes bankrupt and many lost their employment. Both governmental and EU-funded capitals were invested in measures to prevent those affected from facing long-term unemployment. As a part of this investment the former employees of Saab was offered to have their competencies validated to a grade equal to a high school-diploma. The validation was a sort of RPL-process (Recognition Of Prior Learning). This process is called ‘validering’ (validation) in Swedish.

RPL is known to be able to increase a person’s possibility to a new employment. It is also known to be able to recognize an individual’s knowledge and competencies.

The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the RPL and to understand this from a recognition perspective. This was studied by taking part of stories both from personnel and by participants. By getting the former employees' views on what RPL meant to them, the study hoped to answer on what level RPL was able to give them recognition. The study shows that the RPL have given some individual profits and thereby recognition on the individual level. The former Saab employees had not much use for the grade that the RPL gave them therefore it has not led to any recognition on either group- or community level

    Abstract [en]

It is commonly understood across Europe that the provision of Social Services of General Interest (SSGI) is important. Several official documents guarantee every EU citizen access to, and the availability of, SSGI. Nevertheless, when it comes to producing, financing, administrating and territorially organising SSGI, the approaches and practices used across the various European states differ significantly while often mirroring the functioning of the social welfare and national administrative planning systems that prevail on the ground. The purpose of this paper is to present a systematic analysis of how European states (the EU 27 plus Croatia and the EFTA countries of Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) cope with the organisation of SSGI in the fields of education, care, labour market, social housing and insurance schemes. Outlining the similarities and differences of the various national approaches leads to the creation of a European typology of SSGI organisation. This typology will then be compared to existing typologies and classifications of social welfare and spatial planning systems.

"Let´s get one thing straight, I´m not": A qualitative study about the human rights violations against the LGBTI community and how social workers can support the mobilization that is taking place within social movements that are fighting for their rights.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background People who identify as LGBTI are today facing discrimination and human rights violations around the world. In Namibia there is a need for documentation of the violations the community are experiencing. This to be able to put pressure on the government to take the necessary steps to ensure the community equal rights in society. Previous research show that the social work profession is lacking in knowledge about LGBTI issues, which consequentially leads to low expectations from the LGBTI community on the social care service system. The LGBTI movement and the mobilization and resistance that are grown within the movement are important for the individual person, as well as for the overall community in the fight to gain equal rights. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to increase the knowledge of the human rights violations that the LGBTI community is facing in Namibia and how social workers can support the mobilization that is taking place within social movements that are fighting for their rights. Method I used a qualitative approach where I conducted semi-structured in-depth individual interviews to gather people who identify as LGBTI and get their own understanding and thoughts on the subject. I used the Queer theory, but also previous research to analyse the collected data of the respondents. Result People who identify as LGBTI face human rights violations on different levels of society, but it differs for every individual person depending on where you live, what gender or sexuality you define yourself as, what ethnical group you belong to and the family structures. The biggest human right violation that the community is facing is the discrimination they experience when seeking access to different services, this due to the fact that the service providers, including social workers, are letting the heteronormative discourse interfere in the meeting with the client. The movement today is stagnant and distorted, and for the mobilization to become stronger and for the movement to create a stronger and common voice there is a need for education and an understanding between the different identities that exist within the spectrum of the LGBTI community. The social workers can help strengthen the community and the mobilization by offering psychosocial support for the individual person, but also to be an enabler, an educator and an advocator of human rights for the community. However, for the social worker to not do more harm than good, it is necessary for the social work profession to become more LGBTQ sensitive.

    Abstract [sv]

Discursive tensions in late modern society: on education and work for people with intellectual disabilities2015In: European Journal of Social Education, ISSN 1810-4789, Vol. 26/27, p. 118-136Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article problematizes the way late modern society has contributed to discursive tensions in the welfare state services for people with intellectual disabilities in Sweden. We illustrate how disability practices, such as educational systems and work-life arrangements for people with intellectual disabilities, are characterized by an institutional ambiguity following the institutional logic of the welfare state. By relating to a broader societal perspective, it is argued that the choices of lifestyle among young people with intellectual disabilities are closely linked to the notion of late modern society and its demands for flexibility and constant re-creation of identities. This paradox highlights a challenge for special programme schools as well as disability care organizations, since the dual identity of belonging to both the client category and to an identity constructed through belonging to the civil society characterizes the young generation of persons with intellectual disabilities.

Handling Plurality and Dealing with Difficult Work Experiences: A Comparative Study of Human Service Professionals’ Work with Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities2018In: Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities, ISSN 1741-1122, E-ISSN 1741-1130, Vol. 15, no 1, p. 36-42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines how administrators in social services (n = 70) and habilitation staff in healthcare (n = 40) in Sweden experience difficulties in their work with people with intellectual disabilities. The research aim was to investigate the most typical aspects of difficult working situations and to apply a comparative analysis of differences and similarities, where the respondents' organizational affiliations are taken into account. The results are primarily based on a content analysis. Contextual standardized questions were included in this study. The results revealed that experiences of difficulties were categorized in four typological themes: difficult situations associated with (1) structure, (2) professional role, (3) relationships, and (4) collaboration. The respondents' experiences of difficult situations in social services and healthcare organizations did not correspond to the respondents' work dissatisfaction or unclear goals. On the contrary, handling this plurality within a specific organizational context was a fundamental aspect of professionalism. The different characteristics of the organizations in this study reflected two different institutional logics. While the administrators mainly operated within an administrative logic based on a regulatory framework, the habilitation staff operated within a therapeutic logic based on a cognitive framework. Consequently, the two groups had their own specific norms and rule systems, which influenced when, and to what extent, everyday situations were experienced and defined as difficult. The organizational context seems to influence experiences of difficult situations in the work with people with ID and this calls for a discussion of how it impacts the quality of services within intellectual disability services.

Normalitet och identitet i det senmoderna: om personer med intellektuella funktionshinder i relation till utbildning och arbete2013In: Socialvetenskaplig tidskrift, ISSN 1104-1420, no 1, p. 53-70Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Assessing Territorial Impact Assessment: The Case Of Services Of General Interest2013In: Romanian Journal of Regional Science, ISSN 1843-8520, E-ISSN 1843-8520, Vol. 7, no June 15, p. 66-87Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

No single or common definition, or even a shared basic understanding, of Territorial Impact Assessment (TIA) currently exists. The conceptual background of TIA is focused on Territorial Cohesion (TC), which, in turn, also lacks a single definition. TC has a strong connection to Services of General Interest (SGI) as these services are a crucial element of the Cohesion Policy. This paper is a spin-off from the ESPON SeGI project and aims to discuss the applicability of TIA on SGI. The analysis is focused on an ex ante evaluation of TIA and on the methodology of critical evaluation. The findings suggest a rather limited applicability as an undefined concept (TIA) is based on another undefined concept (TC) to measure the impact on a third vaguely defined concept (SGI). Moreover, the particularities of each SGI may be related to economic and social changes that themselves may or may not be territorially reflected.

    Abstract [en]

Energy-efficient technologies are not just objects that might enable households to carry out more sustainable practices; they are tools, and using them effectively requires certain skills and knowledge. Households' difficulties in handling home heating and hot water technologies in particular have been highlighted as an obstacle to meeting energy conservation objectives. This has given rise to calls for improved support based on how the households define their activities and handle these technologies. By deploying a socio-cultural theory of learning and using in-depth interviews with households that have recently purchased renewable heating systems, this paper examines various situations in which people have learnt to use the technologies, and it discusses lessons learnt that may be useful for developing support. The results demonstrate three common learning approaches and identify situations where the learning process runs smoothly and where it does not. The conclusions suggest strategies for helping households overcome the resistance embedded in the interaction with the technologies, and they highlight the importance, when developing support, of starting with what creates meaning in various situations.

Anchoring energy efficiency information in households’ everyday projects: peoples’ understanding of renewable heating systems2015In: Energy Efficiency, ISSN 1570-646X, E-ISSN 1570-6478, Vol. 8, no 2, p. 353-364Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article claims that the contents of energy conservation information policy instruments must be better adapted to household members’ everyday life experiences in order to capture their interest and transform information into action. The article elaborates on how to ground energy policy information in the everyday doings and strivings of households. Using two time-geographical concepts, i.e. activity and project, we investigate how people understand and define their energy-related activities as parts of overarching everyday projects with a focus on the constraints on energy conservation. The analysis is empirically based on interview data from a case study of households’ use of renewable heating technologies. The results illustrate how peoples’ heating activities are related to everyday projects such as reducing environmental impact, comfort for a convenient daily life, the household budget balance, learning about and/or maintaining home technologies and hobbies. One conclusion is that information instruments focusing solely on one or two such projects might hamper the translation from information to action and also limit the number of people interested in or able to access the information. Another conclusion is that the growing use of energy efficient technologies might influence new habits and perceptions of the everyday use of energy, making common economic motives for saving energy less useful. Anchoring energy-related information and support in the everyday activities and projects of households would facilitate the translation process. If this is achieved, information could prove a useful instrument in the broader reorganization of societal institutions in a sustainable direction.

Dividing or sharing?: A time-geographical examination of eating, labour, and energy consumption in Sweden2015In: Energy Research & Social Science, ISSN 2214-6296, E-ISSN 2214-6326, Vol. 10, p. 180-191Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Many energy consuming household activities are collectively organized, while in information campaigns for energy conservation they are regarded as planned and performed by individuals in isolation. This article aims at scrutinizing this mismatch by analytically examining how energy-consuming activities are allocated and organized among household members and explore the implications for energy consumption. Time-geographic concepts ground for the investigation and empirical illustrations are taken from a uniquely rich historic Swedish pilot study on time-use from 1996. The pilot offers time-diaries from members of the same households which allow analysis on activity allocation in the households. We present a conceptual framework with two overarching principles of activity allocation; project division and project sharing. Visualizations of daily activity sequences from time-diaries in the pilot study are used to analyze the household project providing meals. The overall result indicates that the ways households allocate and coordinate energy consuming activities matter to energy use. Consequently, it is important to consider the household with its members for understanding daily energy consuming activities and people’s possibilities to conserve energy. If reconfigured to fit into the interlinked everyday life activity sequences of household members, energy advice and information campaigns might improve the opportunities to reach their targets.

Som en fisk i strömmen: en studie om unga killars upplevelser av manliga ideal.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

That the media have a great influence in most people's life isn't strange considering its accessibility. That many youths experience pressure to look in a certain way is neither anything new. Yet, research shows that media's impact on young people is relatively small and only limited to those who already have a dissatisfaction with their body and their appearance. This is what we wanted to investigate further and have therefore asked ourselves following questions: What are young boys views on body and appearance on the basis of the male ideals conveyed by the media? How do these ideals look? Do they do something with their bodies and their appearance to look like the male ideals? And if so, what do they do? Do they experience that the male ideals affect their view of the body and the appearance? These are the questions we, with our study, attempt to answer.

The purpose of the study was to examine how young boys in high school experience the male ideals conveyed through the media, based on the body and appearance, and if they are affected by them. We also wanted to create understanding of how the ideals look like today and whether and if so, what these boys do with their looks and their bodies to look like the ideals. The theoretical perspective we have had in our study is a social constructivist perspective and the concepts we chose to proceed from were masculinity and body. Masculinity based on hegemonic masculinity and body in relation to masculinity is the focus we have had about the concepts.

The empirical data was collected through two focus group interviews, with three participating boys in each group, meaning six informants. Based on our collected data, we used the analytical method IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) and followed the steps that comprises the method.

The conclusions that we made was that boys look at the ideals in different ways, neither there is a dominating ideal and other ideals with different styles or that there are different types of ideals. How you look at ideals and how you are affected by them, they consider as individual.

Another result that our study shows is that the entire "picture" is important, it's not enough to have a certain body if you are missing the right posture and it doesn't work to dress up in a costume if you can't wear it up. A further result in our study shows that boys experience pressure to look in a certain way and that they compare their appearance to their environment and to the media. Most of the informants understand that people can feel bad about that the media is conveying an ideal that's very hard to live up to and therefore it's harder for them to be satisfied with their bodies and appearance.

    Abstract [en]

LSS (1993:387) the Act Concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments is the Swedish law to assure citizens with certain specified disabilities support and service in order to achieve good living conditions and be given the opportunity to live like any other citizen. Every year there is an increase in the number of approved actions of support under the Act. In year 2015 117 200 actions of support were granted and executed under the Act. Previous research highlights the problematic circumstances concerning geographical as well as differences in assessing the right to support from the Act. The purpose of this study is to analyze how public documents on three levels in society constructs and reproduces the guiding concepts and terms in the LSS (1993: 387). The method of implementation is a critical discourse analysis of six normative texts in the evaluation and design of efforts to visible the discourses used in the creation of the content.

The results are analyzed on the basis of a self-constructed analysis model based of Faircloughs three dimensional analytic model and domain theoretical thoughts. The results suggest that there are three levels in the creation and reproduction of concepts and content analysis contains three main discourses that can be seen in the material: the discourse of good living, to live like everyone else and participation. This is exemplified in the discussion of the analysis and the results chapter and the study concludes with a final discussion on the study's findings.

    Abstract [en]

School is one of the largest arenas in an adolescent’s life, thereby it is an important part of adolescents’ development and role-taking. The aim of this study is to explore adolescents’ experiences of role-taking in school and what factors were considered to affect role-taking. Through a qualitative study and focus group interviews with a total of 18 adolescents, divided into three groups, the study examined how the expectations, that took place in school, affect adolescents’ role-taking and adolescents’ experience of role change. Centrally throughout the study, revealed through the results, were the impact expectations had on role-taking. That is a crucial factor for the role you take. The expectation of greatest importance for adolescents’ were the expectations from the peer group, since this is an essential part in adolescents’ lives. Furthermore, even the adults within the school had an impact on the role that adolescent takes. This, by the way the adult through the social interaction expresses his image of the individual, not only to this individual, but to the entire peer group.

The result shows us that role changing is seen as an obvious connection to the replacement of the peer group, since this means a change of expectation of the adolescent. However, it is possible to accomplish a slow change of role within the peer group you belong to.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to describe youth´s experiences of Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC) that they have undergone for their antisocial behavior. The study highlights the concept of participation experienced by the youth´s during the treatment period in MTFC. The study is inspired by a phenomenological perspective and qualitative interviews were chosen as a method to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of youth´s. Three youth´s between the age of 16-19 years old are included in the study with the quotations used

in the analysis are taken from their stories. The material was coded and thematized and the following categories were developed: MTFC as a whole, participation, enabling factors to participation and impediments for participation. The analysis of the material has been combined with previous research and theories in which similarities and differences are highlighted. The results showed that youth's experienced the MTFC program as being a good treatment program to be able to change their antisocial behavior. All youth´s consider that a good relationship and trust in the family home have helped them get through the program and when it comes to the relationship with the staff in the MTFC program there is a difference in the descriptions of youth´s depending on the different experiences of participation. The structure and control in the MTFC program have been a clear framework for the youth´s it this study to relate to, which they feels have helped them in their process to change but at the same time it is understood to have been the major impeding factor for participation. The study's conclusions are that the MTFC program can be a good complement to other treatment options for youth´s with antisocial behavior , however , it is clear that some obstacles appears to youth´s rights to participate in the MTFC program

    Abstract [en]

The study is part of a project of cooperation between University West and the elementary schools of the Municipal of Uddevalla. Since the project has an interactive approach the purpose/research questions and the choice of methods have been developed in dialogue between researcher and practitioners. The overall purpose has primarily been to make visible both the good examples as well as the difficult situations in teacher´s relationships with children defined as “having problems”, as well as with their parents. Further it is to develop and strengthen the professional competence of the teachers. The specific aim of this part of the project is to explore how teachers perceive theirrelationships with the parents of children defined as ”having problems”? What are the possibilities and which are the obstacles? The empirical material consist of ten qualitative interviews with female teacher´s teaching in 1-3 grade. The theoretical point of departure is a relational approach and a perspective of power. Relational work, relational competence and relational practices are understood as being entangled with practices of power. The analysis shows that the informants emphasize the role of the parents in supporting their children and that they see it being of vital importance to create a trusting relationship with the parents. To create and sustain this relationship the informants use a multitude of relational practices; such as giving positive feed- back, making the child responsible, listen, show empathy, be personal as well as setting boundaries. The ideal for cooperation is a partnership in which the teacher and parent/s work together as a team, however with the teacherdefining “the problem” and leading the work. The mail obstacle to co-operation is defined by the informants is the lack of insight or understanding of the parents, them not willing to acknowledge of the “problems” of their child.

    Abstract [en]

Since James Scott introduced the concept of everyday resistance’ in 1985, research has grown within partly overlapping fields. Existing studies utilize very different definitions, methodologies and understandings of everyday resistance’, which makes a systematic development of the field difficult. In previous work, the authors have suggested a theoretical and definitional framework where everyday resistance is understood as a specific kind of resistance that is done routinely yet is not publicly articulated with political claims or formally organized. A more comprehensive and systematic exploration of this challenging phenomenon is possible through an analysis where: repertoires of everyday resistance are taken into account, together with relations between actors, as well as the spatialization and temporalization of resistance. These analytical dimensions are explained and motivated through illustrations from existing research. Finally, it is argued all four dimensions need to be studied in intersections.

    Abstract [en]

This article applies our earlier proposed theoretical framework on everyday resistance in the case of Palestinian Sumūd (steadfastness) in relation to the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories and the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. Our original framework rests on the dimensions of: (I) repertoires of everyday resistance; (II) relationships of agents; as well as the (III) spatialization and (IV) temporalization of everyday resistance. The already existing complex theoretical debates as well as the rich body of empirical work regarding the Israel/Palestine conflict give us an opportunity to illustrate and explore the possibilities as well as the limits of the proposed framework. Our hope is that in this way, we encourage more systematic research on and a more nuanced understanding of everyday resistance.

”Det skall vara stimulans och social samvaro” : en studie om en kommunal insats till äldre, vilken benämns social samvaro.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how field secretaries are working with and perceive the preventive work with young people. The study was designed as a qualitative study in which seven field secretaries from two different municipalities participated. The interviews were based on a half-structured interview guide. The interview data were coded and divided into relevant themes. The study was based on a socio-cultural perspective.

The result revealed that the field secretaries who participated in the study based their work on three different levels of prevention. The different levels create conditions for the field secretaries to be on the young people's various venues and thereby gain a holistic view of the young people. The goal of prevention is described according to the purpose of creating a good life for young people.

Preventative work is based on creating contacts. This is done through outreach work and by meeting young people from their perspective. Creating sustainable relationships are described as important. This is done by using one's own personality as a tool, as well as to continue to exist over time for the young people. The field secretaries have described the relationship's importance to their work and explain how it can be used as a tool for learning and development in the young people.A conclusion to be drawn from the study's results is that the field secretaries strive to work from a holistic view were the youths own participation in the work is the focus. Another conclusion is that the relationship can be seen as a key tool for a successful prevention

    Abstract [en]

Young people today are said to be more positive to cannabis and that their cannabis use increases. This is reported in the media but it is also featured in numerous research articles. What is said to be behind adolescents increased positive view on cannabis is their media consumption and increased use of the Internet. Adolescent’s cannabis views may be important to investigate in order to get better prevention work.

The purpose of this study is to examine how youth looks at the use of cannabis and how different variables in their lives make them differ in their use of cannabis. The survey was conducted using a quantitative questionnaire which was distributed to approximately 30 % of the third year students in a secondary school. The questionnaire was interpreted after collection using a cross-table analysis and to see if there was any dependence between the variables a chi2-test was used. The study showed that men and adolescents who had used cannabis has a more positive view on cannabis than women and those who had not used cannabis

    Abstract [en]

From a general interest aspect the study looks into how a child´s upbringing has been affected by growing up in an alcohol abusive environment. We discovered that it is today a taboo subject that needs to be highlighted and talked about. Our choice of topic was therefore how adult children have been affected by growing up in an addictive environment. The purpose of our study is to highlight and analyse how adults have been affected by growing up in an addictive environment and to discuss how their experiences can have formed them and also had an impact on their lives today. The study is a narrative research based on three life story. We have used an interview template so that the aim of the study and questions should be answered. The three respondents in the study have been requested and have given their consent to participation.

The results were analyzed and linked to our base theory - attachment theory. The result that became clear in our study is that a childs upbringing is greatly affected by alcohol addiction. It emerged in our study that respondents mostly took a back seat and had to take a lot of responsibility in the family. They described that the addiction was usually kept secret. Our result also showed that every respondent hade some form of recreational activity and also a person they felt safe with during childhood. It also showed that the respondents have been affected by their upbringing in positive and negative ways. Their experiences have strengthened them.

Musik som instrument: En kvalitativ studie om elevers upplevelser av motivation genom musik2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The results of the latest PISA survey indicates that Swedish 9 grade-students have reduced in terms of knowledge in comparison with other investigated OECD countries. Swedish students achieve a record low in the three knowledge fields of mathematics, science and reading comprehension. The lack of knowledge is traceable to the high figures of unqualified high school students. In 2014, every tenth student was unqualified to high school due to insufficient grades. It is the highest figure ever. The responsibility to guide unauthorized students to high school, others studies or work, lies with the Introduction programs. Students at the Introduction program usually has a harder and longer way to the labour market through the studies, which can be seen as a contributor to the school fatigue. Introduction programs are able to integrate efforts in education that promotes students' school motivation, but many principals feel that there are gaps in meeting students' individual needs.

With this in mind, there is reason to study how pedagogical work can be designed to motivate students. The purpose of the study is to study the importance of music for students' school motivation. With a qualitative input with semi-structured interviews, we wanted to capture the students' experience of music as motivation and change. The study was conducted at Musikalternativet, a motivation contribution to school tired and music interested students. The theoretical basis was the motivation theory, Self-determination theory with emphasis on the proposed three basic needs: competence; autonomy and relatedness.

The results show how students with higher satisfaction regarding the three basic needs for competence, autonomy and relationship experience a larger school motivation than earlier. The need for competence is met when the educators actively challenge the students and give positive feedback. The need for autonomy are met by allowing students to be involved in the decision-making and design of the project, and by encouraging them to be creative. Relatedness needs are met through connectedness to other students and to the equal relationship between teachers and students. The results also show that students have a need to express feelings. The study shows that music can be an efficient educational tool for raising and motivating students with school fatigue.

    Abstract [en]

Sweden has been a destination country for migrant unaccompanied refugee children since World War II, which means that it is not a new phenomenon. Sweden, which currently receives the largest number of unaccompanied children and young people in Europe, estimated this year to receive approximately 7800 children and adolescents fleeing alone. Municipalities stand where they face a lot of work to structure the reception and creating inclusive opportunities for the target group.Based on the above problem area, it is considered appropriate to conduct a study on how different asylum and PUT accommodations (permanent right of residence accommodation) for unaccompanied children and adolescent working on integration. The purpose of the study is to examine the experiences that residential staff and unit managers hold of the integration, as well as the promotion and aggravating factors affecting the integration process. The study is based on a qualitative survey of five informants in four accommodations. Theoretical foundations are developing ecological systems theory and the theory of recognition. The empirical material has been transcribed, thematized on the basis of the hermeneutic circle/spiral and analyzed the study, previous research and theoretical points. The study results show that accommodations work with unaccompanied children and adolescent is the main enabling factor in the integration process. All accommodations work actively with integration through practical and informative information about everyday lifeand society building in Sweden. The results show that the accommodation found a security by a caring work, and are actively working to create synergy with community social arenas that are considered to promote the social network. Children and adolescent build networks within their own multiethnic group that promotes ways into society. The study results show that social structural factors contribute to obstruct the integration process. Municipal guidelines create unequal conditions based on social service operations differ in the districts and municipalities. A lack of structure around the integration work at a higher level and a societal resistance at the local level contribute to forming social exclusion. Individual language barriers contribute to integrated activities become exclusive to children and adolescent who do not understand or be understood linguistically.

Theory, practice and synthesized knowledge: Students' learning  and reflections during internship-periods2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Courses with elements of internship are expected to bridge between different forms of knowledge domains and thereby contribute to synthesizing knowledge can easily be taken for granted. This requires a clear and systematic integration of theory and empirical knowledge, which can be seen as complementary opportunities. However, we still need more knowledge about how the relationship between different forms of work and knowledge domains can be understood. We have scrutinized the organisations, aims and approaches to knowledge and learning on internship‐periods at two programs at a university where they outspokenly says that they see workplace settlement as a point of departure to reflect and synthesise knowledge in science and theory. The data consists of policy documents, curricula, student assessment work and written reflections of internship periods. Our results show that there are somewhat different conceptions of scientific knowledge, practice, knowledge, and the relationship between them. While some documents are based on theoretical perspectives other emanate from practical perspectives. In some texts internship is viewed as means to develop professional skills and other focuses theoretical analysis of practice, which have implications for pedagogical design. Ambiguous agendas are also reflected in students' assessments work where perspectives, focuses and reflections in and about situations differ depending on how students have perceived the aim with internship. Our conclusions are that ambiguity and different perspectives formulations may confuse students. To further develop internships pedagogically, an increased clarity and transparency is needed on both ontological and epistemological starting points and perspectives

"A och O, ingen diskussion": En kvalitativ studie om HVB personals syn på bemötandets betydelse för ensamkommande barns återhämtning från traumatiska upplevelser2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how young people present themselves on Facebook. We wanted to find out what young people saw as important to showcase and share of herself on Facebook. Further investigated what differences existed between boys and girls ' representation and whether their use of Facebook can be linked to their social capital in the form of their friends on Facebook. A total of 121 young people participated from two different high schools in our survey, where they had to answer questions about the 13 different their use of Facebook, which had links to the study questions.

The results showed that the chat feature was by far the most important feature for young people on Facebook. Photos were the second most important feature for them, it was something more important for girls than boys, to present themselves by pictures. It was also somewhat more common that girls wanted to look stylish out on the pictures they shared. Guys, in turn, thought it was more important to write status updates.

We could not see any correlation between the number of friends on Facebook and intensity on Facebook. To "like" someone's text or image was the most common response to give and receive. The conclusions that can be drawn based on the results of the study, is that the young people's representations mainly takes place via pictures on Facebook. The girls thought it was more important to look good on their pictures, we interpret as it can be explained by the gender norms that exist in society, where girls ' body and appearance are often more in focus.

    Abstract [en]

Background: The choice of subject in this study is based on the altered perception of the importance of a relation between parents and children the last century. The enlarged importance of parent's involvement in their children's lives makes it interesting to study how these parents are made participated by the social worker and their perspectives of a work that promotes participation among these parents and how the social worker perceive their discretion in this work.

IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome: En studie om den funktionella mag - och tarmsjukdomen IBS och dess konsekvenser för individens sociala delaktighet2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay deals with the new widespread disease IBS and its consequences for the social participation of the individual. The purpose of the study is to look at the experience of social participation of the individual and her experience of living with this disease. IBS is a so-called dynamic/functional belly- and intestinal disease, which stands for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and is symbolized by recurrent or chronical symptom from the belly- and intestinal canal. From a medical view IBS is considered as a benign disease, but it can be tricky to live with and sometimes give heavy problems for the individual and its social life. The scientists doesn`t know what the cause is behind the disease and it doesn`t exist any medical test who can prove that a patient is suffering by IBS, but they do know that the case-history of the individual is very typical and that the disease is more common among women. From a social view studies show that the social life of the individual is strongly affected, and that the identity and how she look at normalcy/variation is no longer the same as it was when she was healthy. For every individual whos is living with this disease has also the concept of participation; to be social with other people and in society at large, got a whole new meaning as a result of their disease.

Den sista fasen: En kvalitativ studie om Fas 3 i Jobb- och utvecklingsgarantin, utifrån deltagarnas perspektiv och i arbetsmarknadspolitiska styrdokument.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Fas 3 is a controversial part of the Swedish labor market policy and the active labor market program called Jobb- och utvecklingsgarantin. The purpose of Fas 3 is to get long-term unemployed back on the active labor market and into employment.

With help from qualitative methods, the purpose of this study is to explore the Swedish labor market program Fas 3. Based on the perspective of the unemployed and labor market policy reasoning about Fas 3 and Jobb- och utvecklingsgarantin; this study will relate to the following question formulations:

    1. Which are the main components regarding reasoning about labor and unemployment in labor market policies and how is it expressed by the Fas 3 participants?
    2. How do the Fas 3 participants describe the experience of participating in Fas 3?
    3. How do the labor market policy and the participants in Fas 3 view the effectiveness of Fas 3 for future employment opportunities?

The results of this study is based on the analysis of three semi structured interviews with Fas 3 participants, as well as text analysis of stories about Fas 3 published in media by Fas 3 participants. Political documents have been analyzed and will be related to the participants’ stories. The results show that the unemployed seem to feel more anxiety than security in Fas 3, which could depend on the fact that they have to battle the extensive demands that the authorities puts on them. The powerlessness before the authorities is an overall feeling amongst the Fas 3 participants, and the feeling of not being able to have control over their own situation is distinct.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which high school students´ truancy is a manifestation of shortcomings in school activities. Based on our aim, we have arrived at two questions: How does the school, being an institution, affect the occurrence of truancy? How can changes in the way of working in schools, reduce the occurrence of truancy? The study is based on contextual, and youth culture perspectives. The report is based on five focus group interviews with students from grade two and three in Swedish upper secondary school, and six individual semi-structured interviews with the school management, student health group and teachers. The material has been processed by carefully listening to audio recordings, focusing on finding similarities and differences in the empirical material. The results have been reported by weaving answers together from the interviews with relevant concepts and theories, as well as with our own reflections and discussions. A condensed version of what the informants have expressed during the interviews is retold in themes. To complement these retells, specific quotations from the informants which are considered especially interesting have been included. The results show a clear contradiction between staff and pupils, where views and experiences surrounding the phenomenon of truancy vary greatly. The material as a whole shows that the relationship between students and teachers at this school, in the current situation, is strained. The results we consider most prominent in our study is the fact that the school's existing structure and social environment has a direct impact on the occurrence of truancy. According to us, the school needs to change; the students´ unique needs and well-being should stand in focus.
