Competence development at workplace: a work integrated informal learning (WIIL) approach2016In: Far East Journal of Electronics and Communications, ISSN 0973-7006, Vol. 2, p. 35-42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Learning within the organization is not only linked to the formal training and education of the employees, but also to informal processes of sharing knowledge. The knowledge is often embedded in organizational activities, practices and norms, as well as in social ties among individuals in the organization. We analyzed employees' behavior and acceptance of online social networking as an information system (IS) of learning. The analysis is performed by a descriptive case survey within a telecom corporation in Pakistan. The purpose of our study is to bring an informal learning system at workplace. In this study we obtain quantitative data from 105 out of 180 targeted employees. The results show that a majority of the studied employees favor social networking to connect colleagues at different levels and more than half of the respondents share their knowledge and experiences using social sites. Nearly half of the respondents strongly agree that knowledge sharing is an important role of social sites within the organization and many are in favor of social media as an informal learning system. The results also show how the professionals use social networking sites to share their experiences and to build a virtual break in hierarchical levels of professions. This paper illustrates the benefits of social networking sites as an informal work integrated learning tool that also serves as an IS model for the organization.

    Abstract [en]

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) studies usually focuses on educational situations when professional organizations are actively involved in learning processes for students in higher education. However, after completing the institutional period entering the professional arena, the professional person is still actually a student at the workplace as s/he never stops learning. Learning within the organization is not only linked to the formal training and education of the employees, but also to informal processes of sharing knowledge. The knowledge is often embedded in organizational activities, practices and norms, as well as in social ties among individuals in the organization. Our analysis of employees' behavior and acceptance of online social networking as an information system (IS) of learning is performed by a descriptive case survey within a telecom corporation in Pakistan. Belöningssystem: dess påverkan på medarbetarnas motivation2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Reward systems is a motivational tool applied by organizations to get employees to work in the same direction as the organization goals. It has become a challenge for organizations to create a reward system that motivates employees, because what motivates is highly personal and varies. The purpose of the study is to investigate how reward systems can contribute to motivation among employees, as well as how the most optimal mix of financial and nonfinancial reward looks. The study is based on what the employees within the chosen company have in view of the applied reward system in that company. By examining the reward system, it will provide in-depth knowledge about how the reward system works and how the employees perceive the reward system. The study is based on qualitative methods for obtaining a holistic view of reward systems within the chosen company, but to get a realistic view of reality, the approach has been inductive in empirical data. The empirical part is built and designed by a summary of the interviews carried out. In the study, we analyzed previous research together with empirical data. Our result indicates that both financial and nonfinancial rewards are an important source of motivation for employees. A mix of both rewards is required for the reward system to have the most optimal motivation influence on employees. However, our result suggest that non-financial rewards is more important and effective than financial rewards, especially among the older employees in terms of education and development opportunities. The motivational preferences varied between the different interviewees, but everyone agreed that there should be a combination of these rewards in order to achieve the highest level of motivation.

How can you be dark-skinned and beautiful?: A Qualitative study of how colorism and internalized racism is perceived by Somali women in Sweden2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the perceptions and understandings of Somali women in Sweden toward colorism and internalized racism in the context of Sweden’s Eurocentric beauty ideals. Using social constructivism, intersectionality theory, colorism, and internalized racism as the theoretical frameworks. The study employs a qualitative method with focus group interviews to explore the beauty habits and ideals of Somali women and how they attempt to conform to Eurocentric norms. This thesis finds that Somali women's beauty ideals are heavily influenced by Eurocentric beauty ideals as they dominate the media and beauty industries. The study also finds that it is difficult for Somali women to belong to Swedish beauty norms as whiteness is the dominating norm. Concluding, the study reveals that intra-racial colorism is prevalent and perpetuated within the Somali community, and that Somali women internalize racism as the unattainable Eurocentric beauty ideal of light skin leads to skin lightening practices and attempts at concealing one’s racial identity.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

What are the effects of a cashless society on VAT evasion?: A study on Denmark, Finland & Sweden2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The title of this essay is "What are the effects of a cashless society on VAT evasion –A study on Denmark, Finland & Sweden". Due to an increasingly digitalized world there will be different effects on the economy. We are getting closer to a cashless society every day, but we do not know the consequences that this will have. VAT evasion has long been a problem and has been easy to go through with, due to all the payments made with cash. It would be interesting to see if there is going to be a change in VAT evasion now as we go towards a cashless society. The aim of the study was therefore to answer the question: what are the effects of a cashless society on VAT evasion. To answer this question we focused on collecting data from three Scandinavian countries: Denmark, Finland and Sweden. Many articles were read on the subject before interesting data was collected to be analyzed. The data, mostly gathered from the European Central Bank, included the VATgap, number of payment terminals, number of ATMs, percentage of total payments made with cards, GDP and the Consumer Price Index for each of the three chosen countries. In the theoretical framework the theory around VAT is presented as well as a short discussion about the underlying factors on VAT evasion. There is also a section on how we have chosen to represent the cashless society and how this will be measured in the paper. In order with previous research the hypothesis of the study was formed to be that the VAT gap will decrease as we gotowards a cashless society. Multiple regressions were made on the data collected and the result analyzed. There was no significant relationship found between the VAT gap and any of the three explanatory variables. Instead the VAT gap seemed to be connected to what country that was studied. The coefficients of the variables seemed to indicate that there might be a positive relationship between the VAT gap divided by GDP and the number of payment terminals. The reason for this relationship was discussed to possibly be blamed on the fact that card usage increases the total transactions due to the speed and simplicity of card payments. In order to make the results more reliable it was suggested that the study would be enlarged to include more countries and specifically countries that are less digitalized and perceived to be more corrupt.

Belöningssystemets påverkan på social hållbarhet inom en livsmedelsorganisation: Upplevelser från personal och ledare2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Reward system itself is a control system that consists of different types of rewards, such as bonuses, promotions and the like. The purpose of reward systems is to attract and motivate employees to work more efficiently, but also to be able to more easily form a community between employees for a good collaboration towards the same goal. The reward system is also considered to be one of the biggest challenges that organizations face, as it is about leaders needing to find the right way to reward and influence their employees in order for them to perform better and work towards the same goal. It is thus a matter of implementing a fair reward system that would suit everyone, as the staff experience reward systems in different ways. The complexity, however, lies in the fact that people are individuals and that everyone perceives rewards in different ways. Problems then arise in that the organization and management can not always apply an equal and fair reward system that is suitable for all their staff, and relate to social sustainability. This problem is mainly relevant in food organizations, where there are difficulties in applying a fair reward system. The purpose of this study is thus to create a deeper understanding of how the staff and the leader experience that reward systems affect the social sustainability within a food organization. In conducting the study, a qualitative method has been applied where semi-structured interviews have been conducted. In the interviews, eight respondents participated, of which four of the participants were employees and four of whom had their role in the management within the selected organization. The study has resulted in both the staff and the leader experiencing a negative impact of the reward system on social sustainability in the selected organization. The staff  eel that the reward system is unfair and does not create good equality between the employees of the selected organization, and impairs the social integration between the employees. They believe that some employees are less motivated by the reward system, which in turn leads to a deteriorating social work environment. The leaders, on the other hand, also experience that the reward system has a negative effect on social sustainability, as it is perceived as impairing the well-being of the staff, as well as the community between them, which in turn reduces the staff's trust in management. However, the leaders feel that the implementation of a fair reward system that suits one's own, can have a positive impact on social sustainability in the future.

    Abstract [en]

Performing in working life is important today in order to develop, gain experience, and be judged by one’s manager. Previous research shows that our personality plays a big role in working life. This study focuses on three different parts of experienced work performance; that is, task work performance (everyday tasks), contextual work performance (initiative in addition to everyday tasks) and counterproductive work behavior (working against the business). The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between aspects of individual work performance and personality dimensions. The study made use of personality-based questionnaires, HEXACO (Mini-IPIP6) and Dark Triad (SD3), as well as a measure of individual work performance (IWPQ). The study involved 207 people (M = 36.13 years, SD = 19 years; 109 men). The results showed, as expected, that task-based work performance was positively related (.35) to conscientiousness and negative (-.36) to neuroticism. Contextual work performance was positively related (.41) to openness, which showed the strongest correlation. Counterproductive work behavior showed the strongest correlation with neuroticism (.39). This study results indicate that personality has significance for individual work performance which can be implemented in staff development.

Frivillig IFRS: En möjlighet eller onödighet?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is about why companies choose to voluntary introduce the international accounting framework IFRS. 2005 the EU adopted IFRS which resulted in companies that are listed are required to report according to the standards in IFRS while unlisted companies have the option to do it. There are different reasons why companies voluntary choose to introduce IFRS or not, reasons to introduce voluntary IFRS can be the size of the company or a require from the stakeholders. There are many positive effects of reporting under IFRS despite this there are also negative effects like the introduction are expensive. The purpose of this essay is about to find out which factors certified controller believes are behind voluntary introduction of IFRS. Certified controller is a profession with a great knowledge in accounting which made it relevant to interview them. To study the purpose of this essay a qualitative method were used while the research approach was inductive. To study which factors certified controller believe is behind voluntary IFRS interviews were used. The studies research question is like following: What are the motives for implementing voluntary IFRS for unlisted companies? In the analyses it can be concluded that the majority of the respondents believe that companies applying voluntary IFRS for example the fact that companies want to be listed. Agent costs, information asymmetry and external relations are three factors that according to previous researches has an impact on the accounting choices a company will make. All of the interviewees told us that agency costs were a significant cost because the cost can be high. External relations is a motive that this study shows does matter, for example it can be relevant to some companies to implement voluntary IFRS to get the chance to take a loan. Other affecting factors that contribute to the implementing of voluntary IFRS is the vision of the owner. The positive effect with implementing voluntary IFRS is greater comparability. Despite the benefits, this study shows that there are negative effects of IFRS. The implementing for example is expensive and report according to IFRS is complicated, also the staff are not always inclined to change with the introduction of a new system. The result of this essay shows that there are extern and intern motives to voluntary implementing IFRS. Despite this the essay shows that there are also affecting effects that arise when implicating the framework.

Investeringsprocess: En studie om investeringsprocessen i tillverkningsföretag2015Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how leaders work with feedback as a toolin their management positions. Previous research has shown how feedback is usedwithin organizations to develop individuals' performance and behavior. Further, the introduction highlighted how there is not enough research regarding the experiences of working with feedback. The theory-section also stressed thatfeedback is a process for both the sender and the receiver. The sender's process is characterized by anxiety and fear which result in a presentation of less quality. The managers described the process for the receiver as influenced by personal characteristics which affect their perception. The informants consisted of five leaders, four men and one woman. These managers had different positions and geographical placements within the same company. Since this study aims to emphasize how these managers experience feedback, a qualitative study with semistructured interviews and thematic analysis was chosen. To an extent the result reflected the results of previous research and described how the senders' feedback process was characterized by fear in those cases where the managers were to present criticizing feedback. The informants pointed out that feedback was a gift since it promotes individual progress and therefore is something the receivershould be grateful for. Possibly, it is not the presentation of feedback that further needs to be developed but the receivers' openness and acceptance. This to have an allowing culture where the employees and not only the board, requests feedback.

Employer branding riktad mot studenter: En kvalitativ studie om en biltillverkares arbete med arbetsgivarvarumärket2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When choosing an employer, there are various factors that make employers more or less attractive to students when looking for a job. Surveys on what students’ value in an employer vary and there is limited research on this within the automotive industry. Therefore, this study aims to expand knowledge about how car manufacturers in Sweden work with their employer brand to attract students as well as what image the organization wants to convey to the students and how the students perceive the organization.

The study is a case study and the data has been collected through qualitative questionnaire surveys where two of the respondents work in an HR department and nine respondents are students and active within the same organization. Employer branding is about how potential employees, and already employees, have created an image of an organization as an employer. Employers try to build an awareness of the organization, a positive image and a positive reputation that should be consistent with reality. To strengthen their employer brad, organizations work with internships, recruiting through colleges, social media and job ads. The assessment of what makes an employer attractive varies, but some factors that job seekers see as attractive are salary, organizational culture, company stability, job security, advancement opportunities and development.

The study concludes that the organization works with social media, events, lectures and working days to reach out to students. The organization works through internships, recruitment through schools, trainee programs, social media, fairs and school events. They also try to arouse interest in the engineering profession and technology among young people and they tell their story and try to always be easily accessible for students to connect. The organization wants to be the obvious choice for students as an employer. Students value good communication skills in a prospective employer. They emphasize working conditions, salary and breaks as good qualities of their employer. The organization fulfills the desired characteristics that students in Sweden are looking for in 2023.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to illustrate and analyze the occurrence and meaning of superficial conversation for senior citizens. The purpose was also to investigate what meaning superficial conversations can have regarding everyday life for the elderly and if it can contribute in creating social communities. Based on the objective of the study the following questions were formed: How can superficial conversations be described and what can be conveyed in these conversations? Of what importance is the place in creating superficial conversation? How can superficial conversation in conjunction with the place contribute to establishing social communities for the elderly? The study has a qualitative approach and the scientifically theoretical standpoint is critical realism. The empirical material has been gathered from a municipally driven diner. Seven participating observations has been conducted, where around four informal interviews have been conducted for every observation session. Furthermore four formal interviews were conducted; these have been qualitative interviews; a combination of semistructured and unstructured interviewing. Field notes were taken in conjunction to the observations and all formal interviews have been transcribed. The respondents are men in the ages 40-90 years old, living alone in private properties. The results of the study demonstrates that there are developed social relations at the restaurant which can be categorized as thin ties. The results also display how these social relations are expressed and the meaning of these thin ties in relation to the place. The results have been analyzed in relation to the studies theoretical framework and previous research. The conclusion is that the superficial conversation has a deeper meaning as a means for the elderly to create social communities. It also shows that the place is important, both in itself but also in conjunction with superficial conversation to help create these communities. The place is a contributing factor in the development of thin ties and superficial conversation nourishes this development and keeps these social relations alive. An increased understanding regarding the importance of superficial conversation would facilitate the social pedagogical work for finding new ways of preventing social exclusion and in the development of social meeting places for elderly people.

Ökad motivation i grundskolan med salutogent förhållningssätt: En systematisk litteraturstudie om motivationsfrämjande faktorer utifrån elevernas behov2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There are many challenges for a teacher to motivate students as there are large variations in a class in terms of students' motivation. Previous research shows that students' motivation for school work decreases over the years and the connection between students' motivation and school results is clear and that lack of motivation has a major impact on learning. Given that school is an important area of society and has a central role to play in children and young people's knowledge development, the purpose of this literature study was to investigate how students' motivation can be explained, which methods are successful and what the teacher can do to motivate the students. To fulfill the purpose, a systematic literature review was conducted. The study was based on twelve international scientific articles, eleven quantitative and one qualitative, which were analyzed using the content analysis method. The result resulted in three themes, Students' motivation in school, Motivational support leadership and Motivational support strategies and methods. The first theme, students' motivation in school, illustrates important inherent aspects the student needs to feel in order to be motivated. The second theme, motivational leadership, highlights the abilities of the teacher that are perceived as motivational. The third theme, motivational support strategies and methods, exemplifies which methods and strategies have proven successful in increasing students' motivation. The study's conclusions are that motivation is somewhat complex and includes both internal and external factors and that there are many factors that can affect students' motivation, but also that when students face adversity, it is important to develop constructive action strategies to face adversity and move forward and not give up. Finally, the study showed an important conclusion, it became clear that the relationship with teachers can affect students' motivation in school over time and proximity should be seen as a basic need that all students need.

Komponentavskrivning av byggnader i kommuner: Implementeringsprocessen och dess svårigheter.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Prior fiscal year 2014 an explicit requirement for component depreciation for fixed assets was introduced in Swedish municipalities by the standard setting body Council for Municipal Accounting (CMA). The requirement has largely been introduced due to increased harmonization with the municipal companies. Recommendations from the Council is a principle-based regulatory system, which means that municipalities may make their own interpretations of less detailed rules. This could result in different interpretations of the requirement for component depreciation among the municipals. This could possibly lead to reduced comparability.

The purpose of the study was to gain a better understanding for how municipalities one year after the requirement for component depreciation was introduced, have interpreted the requirement of component depreciation of buildings, and what difficulties encountered in the implementation process. Furthermore, the aim was also to examine whether the comparability is reduced by the introduction, where there are no specific rules for the classification of components to be made.

The study was based on a qualitative approach, and personal interviews were conducted with respondents from four municipalities in western Sweden. The theory underlying the study was based primarily from institutional theory, which emphasizes the processes of change in organizations, and why organizations tend to resemble each other.

The results of the study showed that a few municipalities began the component depreciation method. However, the municipalities will probably use a similar component model as they use information and guidance from the same regulatory body in the working process of component depreciation. The main difficulties that the municipalities generally experiencing is primarily the lack of guidance in the interpretation of the recommendations and how detailed the component depreciation should be. That half of the municipalities have not begun component depreciation in time can possibly be explained by the budget priorities that generally have been superior to accounting principles in Swedish municipalities, but also indicate that the municipalities want to avoid costly mistakes and awaiting responses from other municipalities. It can also be explained by the resistance that occurred in a single municipality. This can partly be explained by that it is generally considered more difficult to implement a change that does not go against the established rules and practices of an organization, but also of the municipal specific uniqueness where the budget plays a major role. The municipalities are also looking much on how other municipalities have handled the issue, which should result in similar models and decrease the risk of reduced comparability.

The knowing doing gap: En studie av de bakomliggande orsakerna till det gap som råder mellan unga kvinnors attityd och beteende till hållbart mode2014Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The focus of this book is on the many far from predictable transformative political processes on gender, sexuality and coloniality that grow out of the broad range of bodies and actors engaged in politics outside the hegemonic order and in everyday activities. These processes are not conducted by states, governments or transnational nongovernmental organisations; rather, they are examples of politics in-between states, organisations and national imagined communities. In this first chapter we will introduce some of the main themes, regarding these processes we in our joint research programme have worked on over the last couple of years.

Pluralistic Struggles in Gender, Sexuality and Coloniality: Challenging Swedish Exceptionalism2021Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This open access book seeks to understand how politics is being made in a pluralistic sense, and explores how these political struggles are challenging and transforming gender, sexuality, and colonial norms. As researchers located in Sweden, a nation often cited as one of the most gender-equal and LGBTQ-tolerant nations, the contributions investigate political processes, decolonial struggles, and events beyond, nearby, and in between organizations, states, and national territories. The collection represents a variety of disciplines, and different theoretical conceptualizations of politics, feminist theory, and postcolonial and queer studies. Students and researchers with an interest of queer studies, gender studies, critical whiteness studies, and civil society studies will find this book an invaluable resource.

Distansledarskap: Är hybridledarskap framtiden i kommunal verksamhet?2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

During the 2020 pandemic, there were major changes in Sweden, and it created completely new conditions in working life. One of the big changes was that several businesses had to move their operations away from the offices overnight. It was forced to create completely new conditions for the leaders to lead their employees. The study has investigated, with a focus on the leadership perspective, what challenges and opportunities the leaders face partly when it comes to leading remotely, and partly in leading in a hybrid way. Research in the past has not had a pronounced leadership perspective, which is why the aim of the study is to contribute new knowledge within the current field. The study is limited to municipal operations. Management/leadership, transactional leadership, transformed leadership, and distance work are the parts used to create a structure in the study. Transcription has taken place of seven semistructured interviews which are coded and thematically analyzed with the help of previous research. The study has arrived at several interesting results. After the leaders led remotely for several years during the pandemic, a majority wanted to maintain some distance working. They didn't want to lead completely remotely and felt that hybrid work was a good middle ground to take. It would be easier to lead the employees and they would be able to be managers more easily. The control they felt they lost during the pandemic, they can get back through this new way of leading and they can get back a good group dynamic, which was missing during the pandemic. The new leadership becomes a new variant of traditional leadership, and the hybrid leadership shows the study, and study concludes that it produces positive employees, and the manager has fewer social problems to deal with. There is also a strong connection between the leadership perspective and the employee perspective (empowerment) when it comes to the many new ways of managing a hybrid workplace. That connection did not exist during the pandemic. It shows the study when it was more of an employee perspective that led to employee leadership. Now in hybrid leadership, both parts are present. The study shows that most of the managers favored a certain distance leadership, with mandatory elements for the employees. Through that, they get the best of traditional leadership, with the best of leading remotely, which in turn has resulted in happier employees, less sick leave, and more efficiency. This does not only apply to the employees, but the same applies to the managers, the study shows.

Strategisk Talent Management: Strategier för att behålla sina vassaste medarbetare2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Competence is a very important part of organizations to ensure that the organization has the right kind of skills to meet the demands. Recruitment of new employees is very costly and it is therefore important to retain the employees in the organization. A special form of careerplanning for those who are high-potentials in the organizations is called Talent management. The purpose of the study was to contribute knowledge about how Talent management can be a strategic part of the organizations and to bring high-potentials to remain in the organization. To study this, I did a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews. Talent management can be a strategic part of the organizations' work and is a common HR activity in organizations. The study shows that high-potentials remains in an organization when they have a challenging job that involves a lot of responsibility, they feel that they have the trust of his boss, they have a good opportunity for career development and they have a good working environment. The study also shows that as head of a talent, it is important to give employees feedback and praise, have conversations regarding career planning, let employees work with what they are good at and give the employees motivated by getting more tasks and more responsibility.

Hur upplevs den digitala kompetensen bland studenter som läser en IT-utbildning?: En kvantitativ studie om digital kompetens på Högskolan Väst2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Uppsatsens empiriska material inhämtades under hösten 2016.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Sweden has a history of labor migration since the World War II. The migration structure has however changed over the last decades and contains a greater number of refugees. The purpose of this paper is to examine the issue of labor migration on the economic growth in Sweden. Also throughout the study we will investigate whether Sweden needs labor migration to meet the needs of the labor market. With this study we want to create a discussion that could provide a greater understanding to the impact of labor migration. The time period in this study extends from 1970 to 2014. A Panel Vector autoregressive model (VAR) will be used to analyze the relationship between labor migration and economic growth. By support of previous research, a theoretical discussion and a comparison of results regarding labor migrations effect on the economic growth will be carried out. In the study we can deduce a positive impact on the Swedish economic growth of the immigration. The variable immigration does however not only take the labor migration into account, which can lead to a deceptive result, because the impact of all immigration is captured in this variable. In the analysis of the result we can interpret that immigration does not displace domestic labor, because of the positive impact of immigration on the employment rate.

Spinning? Du menar väl springning?: En kvalitativ studie om elevers utvecklande av läsförståelse i matematik med hjälp avTalk Moves2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Goodwill is a complex and discussed accounting area. This because of the difficulty in defining what goodwill is, no clear common method for managing the asset has been found and that they are now based on interpretations, assessments and estimates. Previous research that writes about goodwill and the standards IFRS 3 and IAS 36 addresses the difficulties with the information of requirements, the definition of goodwill, difficulties with the standards and also the impairments during the first years since the introduction of the standards. However, there is no longitudinal study between the years 2005-2018, which looks at companies that apply the accounting standards to see if impairments have been made since the introduction. The purpose of this longitudinal study is to investigate and map whether companies that apply IFRS 3 and IAS 36 handle goodwill and any impairment testing, but also what reasons may be behind an impairment. The research questions are:

 Have impairments been made since the introduction of IFRS 3 and IAS 36?

 What is the reasons why impairments are or are not made?

The theory discusses how impairment testing of goodwill is made, the difficulties with impairments and criticisms of the accounting standards. The keywords used are: goodwill, IAS 36, IFRS 3, impairment, negative, reasons and why. To obtain empirical data, a longitudinal study has been conducted by fourteen company's annual reports for seven years. The time period is between 2005-2018 and the companies have been selected based on a list from an article in Avanza. The empirical evidence shows that impairments have been made and with how much. It also addresses how impairment assessments are made and what the reason for an impairment or not. The analysis discusses the answers from the empirical data based on the presented theory, where previous research sees that few impairments are made and that the information about goodwill is scarce in the annual reports. The conclusion for the study is that impairments have been made and this, for example, due to changed market conditions and divestments. Difficulties are also raised with the impairment tests.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study was to see if there are differences between trained recruiters compared to untrained, and differences in improvement in the hourly substitutes who have been recruited by trained staff and whether the City of Gothenburg works uniformly or not. Can a trained recruiter with his or her knowledge select and find more efficient and dedicated staff than untrained recruiters? The data material was collected with the help of semi-structured interviews with seven people with different positions who worked in various activities within elderly care. The analysis was carried out via a thematic analysis of transcribed data material and the results were summed up in two themes: "A united City of Gothenburg" and "One's own perspective". The two themes were the result of a summary of minor sub-themes which included: lack of communication, subjectivity, and illegal approaches. The conclusion shows that there is a difference in job performance and knowledge between trained and untrained recruiters. The conclusion also showed that hourly substitutes who have been recruited by trained recruiters operate with more responsibility and it also shows that they do not receive as many complaints as other hourly substitutes. Another conclusion is that the City of Gothenburg does not work uniformly as they market.

Prehistoric history in Swedish primary school education: pupils' expression of empathy after visiting a cultural heritage site2023In: Education 3-13, ISSN 0300-4279, p. 1-15Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the concept of historical empathy in the context of field trips for young pupils to a prehistoric heritage site in Sweden. The example discussed is a field trip to Vitlycke, a heritage and rock carving site with an associated reconstructed Bronze Age farm, where pupils had the opportunity to experience prehistory with all their senses.

The study is based on the idea that historical empathy is a process that involves both cognitive and affective dimensions and that both dimensions are important for progress. The pupils were interviewed after the trip and their responses are related to the concepts of perspective recognition and care. The study shows how the cognitive and affective dimensions were interwoven in the pupils’ reasoning and how the field trip contributed to an emotional and personal connection necessary for the development of historical empathy. This engagement led to a broadening and deepening of the pupils’ cognitive understanding of Bronze Age life and living conditions, while the cognitive understanding of the historical context contributed to a framework in which they could use their imagination. The results also show the importance of giving pupils time to follow up on theirexperiences after visiting a heritage site.

Prehistory in School textbooks in the 20th Century: from Homogeneity to Inclusivity and Diversity2023In: ECER 2023: Abstracts, European Educational Research Association, EERA , 2023, European Educational Research Association, EERA , 2023, p. 1-2Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With this presentation I would like to contribute to the understanding of the way prehistory has been taught in textbooks over a period of just over a hundred years, and how both society and archaeological research have contributed to changing the way prehistoric people are represented in the textbooks.

Scandinavian prehistory has so far received little attention in history didactics. In Swedish schools, prehistory is taught in the lower grades according to the traditional periodisation: Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Viking Age. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of Scandinavian prehistory as it is presented in history textbooks of the 20th and early 21st centuries, and to trace its development and revision. The study highlights archaeology and gender studies in relation to the subject of history and connects textbooks with historical culture, prehistory and gender.

Textbooks are closely linked to historical culture because they are an imprint of their contemporaries (Rüsen 2004). Our knowledge of the prehistoric period is therefore partly time-bound because it is shaped by the theories currently in force, and in this way our image of prehistory becomes a reflection of our own time (Baudou, 2004). As presented in these books, prehistory is seen as an expression of a historical culture valid in a particular era. The study shows how historical cultural change becomes visible through two categories that run through the entire period under study: Cultural memory and gender.

Cultural memory: The German Egyptologist Jan Assmann has addressed the question of how memory can be linked to a period as far back in time as prehistory, and how the past is recalled in social memory. Since it is a historical period very distant from our own, we cannot share these memories through interaction, but need specialists, such as teachers, to help us (Assmann, J, 2010). Aleida Assman sees our memory as highly selective and when it comes to cultural memory, forgetting thus becomes part of social normality. In a society, new information needs to be processed and new ideas emerge to help us deal with the present and the future, while at the same time, society faces new challenges (Assmann, A, 2010). Memory can thus be seen as a reconstruction of the past created in the present (Selling, 2004). In this study, the concept of cultural memory serves as a tool to explain how some stories have remained in the textbooks during the long period under study, and which ones have changed or are no longer included for various reasons.

Gender: According to Yvonne Hirdman, the concept of gender has been used in anthropology as a descriptive concept to explain the different relationships between the sexes. The system consists of two principles. One is the taboo of separation, which states that the feminine and the masculine must not be mixed. This expression is found, among other things, in the division of labour between men and women, in the idea of what is feminine or masculine, but also in places and characteristics. The second principle is hierarchy: the man is the norm. Men are put on an equal footing with human beings and stand for what is normal and universal. Through this ordering structure, we are helped to orient ourselves in the world according to places, tasks and types (Hirdman, 2004). Gender systems change over time. In every era, there are invisible contracts between men and women that are expressed in ideas about what constitutes the relationship between them (Hirdman, 2004). This study thus describes the process by which the gender system changes and develops.

    Method

The changes in the historical culture are explained by cultural memory and Aleida Assmann's model of remembering and forgetting. Cultural memory thus provides both a theoretical and a methodological framework for this study. The long-term perspective makes it possible to see which stories about prehistory are actively preserved as canon in our memory and which stories have been discarded by new research findings and have thus fallen into active oblivion. The textbook texts were seen in the context of archaeological research reflecting the values of society (Olsen 2003). Nordic archaeology was established as a science around the turn of the 1900s, and as this period marks the beginning of the archaeological academy, this is a natural boundary for a period division (Baudou 2004). The results are also related to curricula, as they also reflect changes in society. The texts were compared with popular archaeological works written by established archaeologists who pointed to research that could be considered representative at the time the books were published, and the periodisation of the study was based on these works: Period 1 1903- 1943 The Nation and the Invisible Woman Period 2 1944- 1968. The post-war period - women are added Period 3 1969- 1987 New social ideas and a settlement with traditional gender roles Period 4 1988- 2010 Towards individuality and equality

    Expected Outcomes

The result shows a historical cultural change in which the representation of people in the books evolves from homogeneity to inclusivity and diversity. It becomes clear how the contemporary social climate and government policies complement the archaeological research and provide a more egalitarian picture of the prehistoric period, that the textbook authors have taken note of. This is in line with the view of how historical culture changes and is influenced by society and how textbooks are part of this history-didactic chain. Aleida Assmann's description of how the canon of cultural memory is not replaced but can change as society changes is exemplified in this study, as several stories about Nordic prehistory recur in the 20th and early 21st centuries, but at the same time the way the stories are presented changes significantly as guidelines and the social climate change. Stories about prehistoric people evolve from stories characterised by homogeneity to stories that clearly advocate inclusion. The first accounts at the beginning of the 20th century seem to consist only of middle-aged men, but gradually women, children and eventually older people are included. The stories about prehistory have a clear anchorage in the contemporary social climate and show a move towards more diversity in their representation. However, it is not always archaeological research that forms the basis for this picture; the interpretations of textbook authors also have a major influence on these representations.

"Killar och tjejer gör det nog på lite olika sätt": En kvalitativ studie kring hur gymnasieelever upplever tillit och förtroende gentemot skolpersonal2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine elderly´s, residents of nursing homes, feeling and experience of their own Quality of Life by examining their sense of well-being, satisfaction and happiness. The questions for this study was "What promotes and prevents the feeling and the experience of Quality of Life in elderly", "In what context and with whom perceive elderly high Quality of Life" and "How has the feeling and perception of Quality of Life changed after they moved to a nursing home". The choice of terms, well-being, satisfaction and happiness, has been made from Bengt Brüldes mixed Quality of Life theory. The Study is thus based on Brüldes theory ant thoughts about life and how Quality of Life can be examined.

The study has a qualitative approach, in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with six elderly living in nursing homes in a small community. The analysis was done according to DePoy and Gitlins four thought and action processes of qualitative analysis. An inductive approach was used where categories, taxonomies and themes were picked up. The categories that emerged were primarily health, meaningful relationships and social interaction with others. Other categories that emerged were help/support, security/unsecurity, economy and humility.

The study shows similar results to previous research projects nationally and internationally. The similarities that emerged is that good health is a contributing factor to an increased feeling and perception of Quality of Life, but also the importance of close and good relationships with family and friends. Furthermore, informants raised the importance of good living conditions so as economy. Nevertheless informants lift the importance of extracurricular activities but also past experience of life. What emerged as the most interesting in the analysis is our interpretation of the elderly as humble, which can affect their sense and experience of their own Quality of Life if their humbleness affect their ability to ask for help and support.

Due to the findings of the study we are of the meaning that its of importance in social work with elderly to maintain and promote the feeling and perception of Quality of Life among elderly living in nursing homes. This is based on the analysis where our interpretation suggests that elderly's humility may affect their feeling and experience of individual Quality of Life negatively.

Demokratibegreppet hos Sverigedemokraterna och Nordiska motståndsrörelsen2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund.

    Abstract [en]

This study examinates how child interviews are implemented in financial assistance in Norrköping municipality. In 2015, the management within Financial Assistance in the Municipality of Norrköping formed a group of social workers secretaries called the "Children's Group" to investigate the possibility of conducting child interviews within Financial Assistance. The child group is an assignment from the management in Financial Assistance, where it includes social workers who can contribute to focusing on the children within Financial assistance, in order to strengthen the child's perspective, exist as a consultant's support in matters concerning children for other social secretaries and implement child interviews. During an annual work with child interviews, the children's group has written a preliminary study. The child group has written a preliminary study during one year's work about the possibility to perform child interviews in financial assistance. The preliminary study shows that in financial assistance there is potential and that there are benefits in performing child interviews. The Children's Group in Financial Assistance in the Municipality of Norrköping today consists of five social workers who are working on implementing child interviews. The study is of a qualitative approach and has been used semi-structured interviews with five informants who work within Financial Assistance and who work with the Children's Mission. The study uses organizational theory and system theory to analyze how the child group relates to the child mission and the goals of the activity. Previous research is also used to understand how the children whose parents are involved in financial assistance affects by their parents' finances situation. The purpose of the study is to investigate how Norrköping municipality is working to implement child interviews within financial assistance and how the employees who are part of the child group experience the implementation process. The purpose is also to highlight opportunities and difficulties with the implementation. The study uses theories to offer an understanding of how the child group relates to the mission and the goals of financial assistance. Previous research is also used to highlight children whose parents are involved in financial assistance in order to gain an understanding of how these children are affected by their parents' finances. The study's results showed that the purpose of child interviews within financial assistance is to offer the children the opportunity to be noticed and make their voice heard. The purpose is also to follow the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Social Services Act, who contain regulations about the child's best interests. Using child interviews in financial assistance can help social workers to make more overall assessments where different perspectives are taken into account in their work. The study shows that the child group that works with the implementation of child interviews needs more time and resources in the form of the education in order for the implementation to continue and thus for the child group's commitment to remain. It appears that the implementation of child interviews has begun to apply as of May 1, 2019, but that the work has not been fully possible due to the absence of a compliance form 4 that was planned to be given out to the child’s legal guardians to ask whether their child can be interviewed or not. The results of the study show that the work with the implementation of child interviews can be influenced by decisions that must be made by the management, staff turnover, new employees that are part of the group who need to get introduced and practice child interviews, cancellations, loss and lack of resources in form of time and economy. These are some of the factors that need to be considered when implementing child interviews.

Sambandet mellan att känna sig trygg i sitt bostadsområde och livstillfredställelse i Göteborgs stad2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Feeling a sense of community is important on both a societal- and individual level, in order to feel life satisfaction and security. There is no previous research in Sweden to what extent the phenomenon’s; security in neighborhood and life satisfaction, can be co-varied. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between safety in the neighborhood and life satisfaction among residents of the city of Gothenburg. The study is based on the SOM survey from 2020.

The survey was sent out to 8,000 respondents aged 16-85, who were randomly selected. Of these 8,000 respondents, a total of 3,956 people chose to participate in the survey. To investigate the relationship between the phenomena used and correlation analysis as well as a multiple regression analysis. In the correlation analysis were phenomena compared against the control variables gender, age, education and ethnicity. In the multiple regression analysis the control variables gender, education and ethnicity the only ones used. Based on the analyses, the results show that there is a weak positive relationship between safety in the neighborhood and life satisfaction, this even after the relationship was tested against the control variables. The regression analysis showed that life satisfaction and the control variables had an explanation rate of 7.3%.

When freedom of choice is conditioned: A study of how immigrants with temporary residence permits articulate their life choices2023In: Abstracts för Decemberkonferensen, Trollhättan: Högskolan Väst , 2023, p. 1-1Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In the European society of today temporary residence permits (TRP) are largely directed at labor market issues, not protection issues. This responsibility-based model implies that the importance of getting a job is the norm regarding what life choices an immigrant "should” do to renew their TRP:s.

In the light of the UN's sustainability goals of reduced inequality, discourses about integration needs to be discussed and problematized to clarify what their implications are for individuals as for society. The aim of the following study is to describe and analyse the field of tension created between the regulatory requirements and the individual's considered life choices as they are articulated by persons living with TRP:s.

The study is based on interviews about life choices with six persons with TRP. The material is analysed with discourse analysis based on the concepts of temporality, liminality and agency and the analyse resulted in three discourses about, legal security (1), ontological security (2) and interrelational freedom (3). The three discourses can be seen as the field within which the individual make a specific choice.

The results show that life with TRP affects choices about family, education and work, but also the approach towards life in general. In all their choices, the informants must prioritize between increasing the chances of obtaining a renewed residence permit or moving towards long time goals. Choices are made with the cost of giving up educational goals or ontological safety, but at times the informants put their own agency in the front seat even though they risk to be sent back to the danger they once fled. The oppressive, colonizing, feature of the responsibility-based discourse risks putting people in a liminal situation that backfires on society in terms of sustainability, and equality.
