"Man är ju stark om man har sagan i sig": En studie om hur pedagoger använder barnboken i förskolan2012Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund:

Method to off-line program robotized metal deposition2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report is a ten credit degree project and is aimed at technically skilful personnel at Volvo Aero Corporation and at the University West. The goal of the project is to create a robot program that can manufacture a part by Metal Deposition from a 3-D CAD model (Unigraphics) via a CAM module and a CAR program (IGRIP) to an ABB robot. Metal Deposition is a method to build new parts, add material to an existing part and repair components that have been damaged in earlier processes. The method can be used with different kinds of welding with powder or welding wire as the additive material. Three reference geometries were used; two bosses and a circular sweep. UG/CAM is used to create the CLS (Cutter Location Source) data. Different milling operations are used to emulate welding. The program which imports the coordinates from the CLS data to IGRIP, as well as the export program, was written in GSL (Graphics Simulation Language). GSL is a Pascal-like programming language used to control the behaviour of simulation models. The import program reads linear movement coordinates line by line until the whole CLS file has been converted into IGRIP. UG/CAM should only use linear movement when using this program. If circular movements are used, a feature that converts those has to be added to the import program.

Uppfattningar och nöjdhet kring en HR-funktions uppgifter2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With real world research as the theoretical framework, a study was conducted as an assignment by the HR-function at Parker Hannifin AB in Sweden. Bearing in mind that there have been ambiguities concerning the roles of managers and HR-staff in previous research and that the managers’ perceptions about the HR-function affects the role of the HR, this study was conducted. This study about perceptions and satisfaction concerning the working of an HR-function aimed to highlight possible differences in customer satisfaction amongst managers based on which unit they belonged to, level of managerial position, the time they have worked as managers in the organization, and the frequency of contact with the HR-department. Moreover, the study considered whether the opinions concerning areas of improvement have changed since the last conducted research. This research was conducted through an analysis of documents and a self-produced questionnaire which was sent to all managers within Parker in Sweden. The results indicated that the same areas of improvement-needs remains, that existing documents are inconsequent in relation to each other, and that several significant differences between managers’ perceptions emerged. The HR-departments along with the different documents should tentatively become more consistent so that their roles become clearer.

    Abstract [en]

Background: In society today, mental illness is a growing problem. Relatives of a person with mental illness are often adversely affected by the person's condition. Knowledge exists to help a person suffering from mental illness but not as much importance is attached to helping them handle the situation. As nurses, we must not only help the person with mental illness but also the relatives. What is missing is to recognize the needs of the relatives and gain a deeper understanding of how to better support and prevent ill-health.

Aim: The aim of the study is to illuminate the relatives to a person with mental illness and how they are affected

Method: This paper is a literature review founded on 12 articles with a qualitative approach based on Friberg's (2012) five-step method.

Results: Relatives living with a mentally ill person, carry a burden of guilt, shame and are faced with ignorance from family and society. This is enhanced by the lack of knowledge of relatives and stigmatization. Being available around the clock effects the relatives negatively such as their health, work and economics. Their future plans were limited, they had to re-priorities and adapt their lives to the mentally ill person. It was a burden for relatives and thoughts of suicide often came to mind.

Conclusion: The life and health of relatives became affected drastically, they needed more support and knowledge from the health care services. The health care services must improve their individual support.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Breast cancer is developed through multiple mutations in important genes that effect the central life process. The risk of developing breast cancer increases by the numbers of relatives that have been affected. Breast cancer appears in different cellular tissues and sizes depending on the stages that are titled with the numbers zero to four. At the survey of diagnosis, the women can go through several feelings. The treatment is costumed to fit the individual and can consist of several components that can give a lot of side effects, influence the life situation and create suffering on several levels. Aim: The aim was to illuminate the woman´s experiences of breast cancer. Method: A literature-based method is used. The studies´ result were analyzed by a qualitative content analysis of a five steps method. Results: The results are presented in four main themes; Loss, Hope, Fear and Anxiety and Security where Loss contains four subthemes while the rest of the themes consist of three subthemes each. Conclusion: The conditions for feeling safe and hope in the situation for the women with breast cancer are faith and support from the family and the environment. This support was not obvious in every family in the world.

    Abstract [sv]

Background: The early relations are the most important relationship. The child is totally dependent of caring. A child being neglected during the early years suffers consequences for the rest of their life. Aim: The aim of this study was to find out about the promoting factors for mother and child attachment during the first year. Methods: A literature review was chosen for this study. The search of literature was carried out from the two databases Academic Search Elite and Cinahl. Nine articles were selected, studied and analysed by the authors. Results: The results of the study showed that one of the most important promoting factors for attachment between mother and child during the first year is the mother´s self-esteem. Other promotion factors are the support of the spouse, relatives and friends. The temperament of the child is important, an easy child makes the mother feel competent. A difficult child makes the mother feel incompetent and inadequate. The affirmation support from the nurse at the child welfare centre has a great importance for the mother`s self-esteem.

Kartläggning av interna transporter på Volvo Penta i Vara2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Volvo Penta is manufacturing boat engines and is located in the city of Vara, 100 kilometers northeast of Gothenburg. The company is a part of Volvo Group and has approximately 200 employees in Vara.

This thesis is based on mapping of internal traffic with trucks due to the factory has been rebuilt and the business has grown. The aim of the thesis is to give an understanding of how the current transport flows functions today and to present suggestions on how the flows can be streamlined. The target of the thesis is to identify and to map out the internal transport flows from incoming goods to different stock locations and also the transport flow between stock locations within the factory. The mapping also includes empty transports, transport of empty containers and waste transports.

The data for the mapping was collected by the help of three truck drivers. The drivers filled out a survey of their transport routs during five working days. The survey presented information about what sort of transport that has been performed and between which stock locations they drove. Compiled information shows examples of the proportions between empty transports, transport of empty containers and waste transports. The compiled information of the three drivers also shows the distance of each transport per day. In order to gain a greater understanding of the analyzed transport flow, interviews have been done with the drivers. Also a benchmarking was made at Nevs in Trollhättan to give an idea of how to improve material flows.

The result of the mapping shows that stock location and material are widely spread throughout different locations within the factory. Further the results also shows that the empty transports are common and often being performed over a long distance. Results also shows that some materials are stock positioned far away from their using points. Considering waste transport the results shows that long transports are needed.

In the future it is suggested that Volvo Penta in Vara changes the stock locations within the factory in order to reduce the number of material and empty transports. Further a new layout with a centralized stock location is suggested in order to shorten the transports and reduce the workload for the truck drivers. Other suggestions are to locate stock positions closer to their using source and to site waste stations closer to pick up points.

Vad driver de svenska småhuspriserna?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors affect the Swedish real estate prices of small house dwellings, and if so, how and to what extent. With the use of earlier studies, that coherently claims mortgage rate and household disposable income to be the most valuable factors to explain the Swedish real estate prices, this study will consider additional determinant factors with the respect to a stock-flow model. 1993-2013 time series data will be tested for unit roots and cointegration before its run in a regression as an "Error Correction Model", which considers both long- and short run equilibrium. The result confirms the short run rate and disposable income as two determinant key factors when it comes to explaining the long run Swedish housing prices, together with other factors such as GDP, household debt and unemployment rate. In the short run, the historical development of housing prices act as a key determinant, but disposable income, short term rate, GDP and household debt are also important explanatory factors. The study shows that the increased income, and the ability to increase household spending, will be reflected in the housing prices. A low loan rate will concurrently make it possible for more households than ever to loan at a market with an already very restricted housing supply

Belöningens betydelse för försäljning och service: en kvalitativ studie av balansen mellan bankens försäljning och god kundservice2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine how well organizational rewarding system can get the staff to increase their sales of products and services, while customers are offered service-excellence for their own good.

The study is related to reality through a qualitative research, in the shape of semi-structured in-depth interviews, were the employees' views of the reward system at Swedbank's telephone bank are examined. Respondents consisted of six advisors and one business manager.

Using a theoretical framework based on motivation theories of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, Herzberg's Two factor theory and Vroom's Expectations theory, the data obtained during in-depth interviews were processed and analyzed. Further, the 4P-model was used to analyze how well the organization exhibit customer service-excellence.

The result shows that it is mainly distributed internal, verbal reward to the workers, but that the sales statistics are the basis for a possible raise. All of the respondents stated that there are unclear directives from senior management regarding the goals; should the staff either increase the sales or reduce the queues. Employees consider that unclear directives create demotivation at work, when the focus on target setting constant varies. Furthermore, all respondents stated that colleagues encourage each other to sell better when they regularly receive reports regarding sales and efficiency.

In the interviews, it also became clear that the organization does not apply any reward for customer service-excellence, but reports from unsatisfied customers are followed up and investigated in some cases. However, business managers sometimes participate at client meetings through call screening, in order to develop staff in improved customer service.

The conclusion of the study is that the organization mainly applies reward of internal nature, where regular reports, considering sales and efficiency create competition among the staff. Their comparison with one another evokes motivation. Different directive considering goal achievement is a factor of demotivation among the respondents. There is no reward for service-excellence. There have been indications that customers are not satisfied with the bank's service, which is suggested to be based on that there is an imbalance between hard (structure and strategy) and soft factors (shared values and personal skills)

Fördelar och nackdelar med budget: Hur arbetar svenska börsnoterade bolag med budget2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

One purpose of budgeting is to allocate financial responsibility within organizations and can be a valuable management tool (Kullvén, 2009). A discussion of long duration, however, is that traditional budgeting should be complemented by other management tools. There is also an advocate for organizations to abandon traditional budgeting and instead work in accordance with the Beyond Budgeting (Neely, Bourne & Adams, 2003).

The purpose of this study is to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of classical Budgeting and Beyond Budgeting. The study was conducted in five listed organizations where interviews were conducted with key personnel.

    The study's research questions are:

How do listed companies work with budget, regarding planning, management and evaluation? How does listed companies relate to criticism against the traditional budget?

Four of the five organizations that participated in the study use budgets. They consider that the criticism of the budget is not relevant to their business. All four companies use budgets or forecasts as they prefer to call it, as a tool for planning, management and monitoring. In other words, all four companies follow the classic basic idea of budgeting. None of these four companies have been thinking about abandoning budgeting, but instead works to develop and streamline its budgeting work and adapting budgeting to its own operations and to the world around us changes.

The fifth organization which is working with Beyond Budgeting, believes that the people working close to the customers know the market best and should make the decisions. The organization believes that budgeting is not in accordance with their values. This is because they want to have a flat organization with a minimum of control. Furthermore, the organization working with Beyond Budgeting means that each employee is aware of the need of economizing and does not want to get as much of the "budget pie" as possible.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Approximately 300 children are affected by cancer each year in Sweden, however the prognosis has been significantly improved. The disease isn't only affecting the child but even the family of the child and therefore, a family focused care should be applied. The disease creates a suffering for the entire family and the nurse then has the task of reducing that suffering.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to highlight family experiences of having a child with cancer.

Method: In this literature study ten qualitative articles, that shed light on the chosen subject, have been processed. The articles were analyzed using Friberg's five-step model.

Results: The analysis resulted in four themes and 13 sub-themes. The four themes were; chaos and uncertainty, change of relationships within the family, change of everyday life and change of attitude towards life. The cancer diagnosis in the child affected everyone in the family, which caused a change in the everyday life for all members. The pursuit for information was constant among these families. Their everyday lives became chaotic when a whole series of emotions tested their relationships. The family members had a change of perspective of life, and priorities were redirected after the child’s diagnosis.

Conclusion: The families face many emotional difficulties in connection with the child being diagnosed with cancer, and they need the support from nurses to handle these difficulties. The need for information is great among these families and therefore nurses need to be able to provide the information that families need to reduce their suffering.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this project is to develop a concept for a shock absorbing boat seat for power-driven leisure boats. The concept will be presented in the form of a CAD model and proposals for materials and components. The work is a product development project and is carried out on behalf of Segula Technologies. The company believes that there is a great potential for shock absorption seats in the leisure boat market. In order to reach the wide market, an important requirement is that the shock absorption function is integrated into the seat and not in the pedestal. This is because the seat will be able to mount on existing pedestals and still fulfill its function.

To establish a requirement specification for the seat, a market survey has been conducted. The market survey has included visiting the boat fair in Gothenburg to study the types of seats available on the market and to speak with various experts. Internet searches have also been conducted to identify what types of boat seats are available on the market. A literature search in the field of ergonomics has been made to clarify how a seat should be designed. Laws and requirements regarding boat seats have also been investigated.

Following the market survey, a specification could be established in consultation with the company. When generating concepts, brainstorming, brainwriting and patent investigation have been the most important methods of inspiration. Brainstorming and brainwriting have been performed a number of occasions with experts in different areas. For example, a former employee at Ullman, a world-leading company in shock absorbing boat seats.

The definitive concept is a bucket type boat seat. This means that the seat is designed so that the armrests are integrated with the backrest. In this way, the chair also allows lateral support. The chair consists of an injection molded plastic frame with glued on cold foam. Cold foam is a common material uses as a cushion in armchairs to increase comfort. The chair's clothing is made of artificial leather, a material suitable for marine environments as it is both UV-resistant and water resistant. The shock absorption consists of an air bellows, four sliding bearings and two attachment plates in acid-proof steel. To protect the components and eliminate the risk of clamping, the shock absorber is covered with a rubber bellows. The device is mounted between the seat and the boat pedestal.

The final concept is theoretical only and has not been tested in practice. If the company chooses to proceed with the concept, it is recommended that a prototype be prepared to perform proper tests.

Higher education students in Sweden and their possibilities of getting a matching employment depending on individual and institutional factors.2007In: Paper presented at the annual conference given by The Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education (CSSHE). Saskatoon, Canada, May 28-30, 2007., 2007Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

There is a general confidence in higher education as a means of creating a good position for the individual on the labour market. However, there might not be as a good correspondence between higher education studies and the employment as may be expected. Some academics may be forced to accept an employment with lower demands in order to not be out of work. They may also accept employments within quite another sector compared to what their studies aimed at (Alpin et al., 1998; Arnesen, 2000; Kivinen et al., 2000). How graduates from higher education establish themselves on the labour market has been studied in several research projects (e.g. Alpin et al., 1998; Arnesen, 2000; Einarsdóttir, 2002; Kivinen et al., 2000). In determining whether or not graduates have been “successful” in obtaining an employment that corresponds to their education, has usually been studied in economical terms. That is, the salary has been used as an indicator of whether or not there is a good match (e.g. Dolton & Vignoles, 2000; HSV, 2005, 2006a; e.g. Kler, 2005). This study does not consider the economic outcomes; it focuses on the match, whether or not the former higher education student has obtained an employment that corresponds to both the field and the level of their education. This is a large scale study that draws on Swedish register data and the results are interpreted separately for men and for women.

    Abstract [en]

Widening Participation in Higher Education: Casting the Net Wide? offers an authoritative up-to-date commentary on the challenges facing higher education today, through the perspectives of experts representing universities across the UK, Europe, Africa and the USA. Contributors draw on recent empirical research as well as analysis of historical developments and emerging policy to provide an understanding of these issues of widening participation to educational practitioners, policy makers and academics alike. Up-to-date insights chart the impact of global economic trends and recent policy developments for students, academics, providers and changing course provision. Contributions from emerging and established experts address a broad range of relevant issues, from the question of grade inflation through to the effectiveness of peer outreach programmes. The book provides insight into how the effects of trends including marketization and globalization will continue to impact pivotally on the extent to which higher education is able to act as a force for social equalization or exclusion of opportunities.

Ju mer läxor desto bättre betyg: En studie kring läxors och läxläsnings påverkan på elevers studieresultat2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund:

    Abstract [en]

Background; Gynecological cancer is a common term for cancer in the female genitals and 2013 there were about 2800 women in Sweden that was diagnosed. This form of cancer and the treatment that is used, affects the sexuality and also the fertility of the women.

Aim; The purpose with the essay was to illustrate the experience of the sexuality after the treatment of gynecological cancer.

Method; The method used in the essay was a systematic translation of different literature. Of all the articles used there were eight that was qualitative, two quantitative and one was a combination of both methods. The analytic process was accomplish with the support of the Friberg (2006) analytic method.

Results; The analysis resulted in two categories; Physical changes after the treatment and the treatments impact on the sexuality of the women. The physical changes that occurred because of the treatment was recurring and it showed that it was primarily surgery that hurt the woman body. It was also shown that the biggest impact that the treatment had on sexuality was pain and reduced desire for sex. And it also showed that sexuality got a new meaning for the women and they found new ways to express their feelings towards their partner.

Conclusion; It was showed that the sexual experience primarily was affected by the physical consequences that the treatment had and not only because of the cancer itself. And it can because of this conclution be of significance that the nurse focus on the effects of the treatment, like vaginal anatomy and physical and psychological effects to be able to support the womans sexual well-being

Hur lärare bemöter flickor och pojkar i klassrummet: En observationsundersökning2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Bakgrund:

    Resultat:

So, Luke, what are ravens? I mean, you know more than one?: Discourse particles from a gender perspective2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine the discourse particles you know and I mean from a gender perspective, but also to investigate if popular fiction and fictitious speech represent prior research on this subject. Prior research (Lakoff, 1975) has claimed that women tend touse discourse particles more frequently in order to soften utterances, and therefore expressing linguistic tentativeness. Janet Holmes (1995), on the other hand, has found that women and men tend to use DPs differently, but not that women are insecure communicators. In order to confirm or refute these researhers' claims, I have chosen to study the speech of two fictitious characters, Lucas Scott and Haley James, from the TV- Series One Tree Hill. The material consists of 17 transcribed conversations between the two main characters, and the method used was to compare and contrast my findings to previous research. The study is mainly qualitative, as I wanted to study how the characters use the chosen DPs. However, I will also discuss how frequently they use them. The result showed that the characters tended to use them in different manners. It was also evident that Haley uses the DPs more than Lucas, as she uses you know ten times and I mean seven times, whereas Lucas uses the first one seven times and I mean only once. Thus, the conclusions of the study are that the characters differ in their use of the DPs, but also that popular fiction, i.e. One Tree Hill, agrees with previous research on gender and discourse particles.

Core ethical issues of clinical nursing supervision2005In: Nursing and Health Sciences, ISSN 1441-0745, E-ISSN 1442-2018, Vol. 7, no 1, p. 21-8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Clinical nursing supervision enables supervisees to reflect on ethically difficult caring situations, thereby strengthening their professional identity, integrating nursing theory and practice, and leading to the development of ethical competence. The aim of this study was to develop an understanding of the core ethical issues of clinical nursing supervision, using previous research as well as philosophical analysis of the theories of three moral philosophers: Harald Ofstad, Richard Hare and Carol Gilligan. The ultimate aim of this study was to develop a general model for ethical decision-making and to establish its relevance for clinical nursing supervision. The findings highlight four important values for the development of a basis for ethical decision-making. These values are caring, dignity, responsibility and virtue.

    Abstract [en]

This paper explores clinical nurse supervisors' ethical styles with regard to supervision in healthcare. Eighty-six registered nurses, all with experience of supervising clinical nurses and students in nursing, completed a specifically designed questionnaire. A qualitative interpretative content analysis identified three core themes: (i) 'Is it safe?'; (ii) 'Is it right?'; and (iii) 'Is it kind?', describing the clinical nurse supervisors' ethical styles. The first core theme 'Is it safe?' covered the supervisors' rules, codes and values that guide their supervisory actions, as well as two sub-themes: (i) empowerment and (ii) integrity. The second core theme 'Is it right?' described the supervisors' responsibility and advocacy as well as the ethical dilemmas experienced in the supervisory process. The third core theme 'Is it kind?' included the supervisors' relationships with patients, professionals and supervisees. The results demonstrate the value of offering a support system, such as clinical supervision, which helps nurses to explore their professional identity for the benefit of the patients.

Decision making within a community provider organization2010In: British Journal of Community Nursing, Vol. 15, no 12, p. 611-617Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: To explore community nurses' experiences of decision making within the community provider organization. Background: Recent changes in health care with an increasing number of patients being cared for outside of institutions can put considerable pressure on the nurse with respect to decision making. Methods: In-depth interviews were performed with 6 registered nurses in two communities. The interviews were analysed by means of phenomenological hermeneutics. Results: The community nurses' experiences of decision making were interpreted as spiders or octopuses, consultants and troubleshooters. The subthemes were; networking and structuring, responsibility, availability and knowledge, assessment power, information selection, avoiding rules and bypassing managers. In accordance with hermeneutical phenomenology, the findings were discussed and explained with reference to Ofstad's philosophy of freedom to make decisions. Conclusion: In their decision making, community nurses are committed to finding administrative solutions that satisfy patient needs.

Diabetes empowerment related to Pender's Health Promotion Model: A meta-synthesis2010In: Nursing & Health Sciences, ISSN 1441-0745, Vol. 12, no 2, p. 259-267Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Diabetes self-management is a challenge for both clients and health-care professionals. Empowerment plays a vital role in helping clients to achieve successful self-management. This study adopted a meta-ethnographic approach. Nine qualitative studies were synthesized in order to contribute to a deeper understanding of what clients perceive as being important in an effective empowerment strategy for diabetes self-management. Four central metaphors that influenced empowerment were identified: trust in nurses' competence and awareness, striving for control, a desire to share experiences, and nurses' attitudes and ability to personalize. The lines-of-argument synthesis suggested the need for an evaluation system to appraise clients' diabetes knowledge, health beliefs, and negative emotions, as well as the outcome of interventions. Based on Pender's Health Promotion Model, this study emphasizes the fact that health-care professionals need to understand and address modifiable behavior-specific variables. The study suggests that an effective empowerment strategy would be to use activity-related affect, as well as interpersonal and situational influences, as a means of facilitating and enhancing clients' health-promoting behaviors.

Nurse supervisors' actions in relation to their decision-making style and ethical approach to clinical supervision.2003In: Journal of Advanced Nursing, ISSN 0309-2402, E-ISSN 1365-2648, Vol. 41, no 6, p. 615-22Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIM: The aim of the study was to explore the decision-making style and ethical approach of nurse supervisors by focusing on their priorities and interventions in the supervision process. BACKGROUND: Clinical supervision promotes ethical awareness and behaviour in the nursing profession. METHODS: A focus group comprised of four clinical nurse supervisors with considerable experience was studied using qualitative hermeneutic content analysis. FINDINGS: The essence of the nurse supervisors' decision-making style is deliberations and priorities. The nurse supervisors' willingness, preparedness, knowledge and awareness constitute and form their way of creating a relationship. The nurse supervisors' ethical approach focused on patient situations and ethical principles. The core components of nursing supervision interventions, as demonstrated in supervision sessions, are: guilt, reconciliation, integrity, responsibility, conscience and challenge. The nurse supervisors' interventions involved sharing knowledge and values with the supervisees and recognizing them as nurses and human beings. CONCLUSION: Nurse supervisors frequently reflected upon the ethical principle of autonomy and the concept and substance of integrity. The nurse supervisors used an ethical approach that focused on caring situations in order to enhance the provision of patient care. They acted as role models, shared nursing knowledge and ethical codes, and focused on patient related situations. This type of decision-making can strengthen the supervisees' professional identity. The clinical nurse supervisors in the study were experienced and used evaluation decisions as their form of clinical decision-making activity. The findings underline the need for further research and greater knowledge in order to improve the understanding of the ethical approach to supervision.

The influence of clinical supervision on nurses' moral decision making.2000In: Nursing Ethics, ISSN 0969-7330, E-ISSN 1477-0989, Vol. 7, no 2, p. 124--133Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of clinical supervision on nurses´

moral decision making. The sample consisted of 15 registered nurses who took part in

clinical supervision sessions. Data were obtained from interviews and analysed by a

hermeneutic transformative process. The hermeneutic interpretation revealed four

themes: increased self-assurance, an increased ability to support the patient, an increased

ability to be in a relationship with the patient, and an increased ability to take responsibility.

In conclusion, it seems that clinical supervision enhances nurses´ ability to provide

care on the basis of their decision making. However, the qualitative and structural aspects

of clinical supervision have to be investigated further in order to develop professional

insight into the way that nurses think and react.

The significance of nurse supervisors' different ethical decision-making styles2006In: Journal of Nursing Management, ISSN 0966-0429, E-ISSN 1365-2834, Vol. 14, no 8, p. 637-43Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: The role of the nurse supervisor is very important, because of his/her ability to influence the atmosphere within the clinical nursing supervision group. AIM: To present and interpret nurse supervisors' different ethical decision-making styles. METHOD: A hermeneutic interpretation of three studies on nurse supervisors' different ethical decision-making styles. RESULTS: The significance of the nurse supervisor's ethical decision-making style is reflected in the awareness of their responsibility for creating a relationship with the supervisee. The supervisors focus on ensuring safety, integrating theoretical knowledge and clinical practice, willingness and preparedness to supervise on the substance of nursing, sharing the supervisees' feelings and challenging them, reflecting on the content of clinical nursing supervision as well as promoting justice and integrity in clinical nursing supervision. CONCLUSIONS: The interpretation highlights the importance of the nurse supervisor's style for the outcome of clinical nursing supervision, as they are role models for the supervisees. There is a need for further research to explore the advantages and disadvantages of nurse supervisors' different ethical decision-making styles, especially in relation to the influence of clinical nursing supervision on the quality of care and various support systems.

Attraktivt arbete och främjande ledarskap enligt 90-talisterna: Med fokus på arbetets innehåll, tillfredsställelse och förhållanden samt motivationsfaktorer2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

One of an organizations most important assets is the employees and today, changing workplace is common, especially for younger generations. Therefore, organizations face a challenge in creating attractive work and retaining the employees.

The purpose of this study was to identify what 90-talists considered attractive work to be in terms of work content, job satisfaction, working conditions and motivation factors, but also how leadership can create an attractive work.

The study examines general traits of 90-talists, what they consider attractive work to be and which motivational factors they consider important. Furthermore, the role of leadership in the context of an attractive work is examined. A Facebook-survey has been conducted to reach out to 90-talists, where thirty questions were answered. In total, 133 respondents answered the survey, where 100 of the answers came from respondents born in the 90s. Their answers have resulted in statistics that have been presented in the study.

From the responses in the questionnaires, it was possible to conclude that the 90-talists saw themselves as cooperative and ambitious. They value freedom of action, where they can influence and control their own work and that there are opportunities for development. Having the opportunity to come up with own ideas and make own decisions was also something that the 90-talists considered important. They also felt that social contact, both with employees and leaders, was important. Committed and responsive were the leadership qualities that were valued highly by the 90-talists. The 90talists considered it important that the leader shows appreciation through feedback and dialogue and also promotes cooperation.

From the empirical material, the analysis was one of the most important dimensions in the work content of freedom of action, in terms of job satisfaction, the perceived internal and external recognition of the 90s was in the employment relationship, the social contact at the workplace that weighed heavily.

The study shows that in order to attract or retain the 90-talist in workplaces, an attractive work content, job satisfaction and working conditions need to be created in order to create an attractive work. An attractive work based on the 90-talists perspective is mainly based on the fact that development opportunities exist, that there is possibility of freedom of action and also social cohesion. A leadership that promotes these factors can thus also promote attractive work for the 90-talists.

Proposals for future research are to implement qualitative studies in order to reach underlying thoughts and explanations that could have deepened the study´s results.

    Abstract [en]

Violence in close relationship occurs in all social classes. The purpose of the study was to gain in-depth knowledge of the work of various social institutions concerning violence and particularly violence in close relationships, as well as how they work to reduce violence. Interviews were conducted with eight different actors in society to find out more and to investigate violence in close relationships. Using a norm-critical perspective, the study investigated whether the results support the assumption that a society-breaking behavior stems from norms. The interviews were semi-structured with an open-ended interview guide. The empirical material was analyzed with thematic analysis. The result shows that the violence in close relationship is physical violence, often combined with other forms of sexual and psychological violence. The violence in close relationships leads in addition to physical injuries and mental disorders, to long-term consequences for the individual individuals, society and the family. Violence in close relationship is considered a major social problem both internationally and in Sweden and is an infringement of human rights. The responsibility of Swedish society is to work against violence in close relation while supporting the citizens who are and have been exposed to violence in a close relation. The result showed that Trollhättan's city collaborates with several different social institutions to counter men's violence in close relationships and that they are at the forefront in Sweden in preventing and at the same time reducing the consequences of violence in close relationships while reducing social costs.

Perpetuating ‘New Public Management’ at the expense of nurses’ patient education: a discourse analysis2015In: Nursing Inquiry, ISSN 1320-7881, E-ISSN 1440-1800, Vol. 22, no 3, p. 190-201Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to explore the conditions for nurses’ daily patient education work by focusing on managers’ way of speaking about the patient education provided by nurses in hospital care. An explorative, qualitative design with a social constructionist perspective was used. Data were collected from three focus group interviews and analysed by means of critical discourse analysis. Discursive practice can be explained by the ideology of hegemony. Due to a heavy workload and lack of time, managers could ‘see’ neither their role as a supporter of the patient education provided by nurses, nor their role in the development of nurses’ pedagogical competence. They used organisational, financial, medical and legal reasons for explaining their failure to support nurses’ provision of patient education. The organisational discourse was an umbrella term for ‘things’ such as cost-effectiveness, which were prioritised over patient education. There is a need to remove managerial barriers to the professional development of nurses’ patient education. Managers should be responsible for ensuring and overseeing that nurses have the prerequisites necessary for providing patient education as well as for enabling continuous reflective dialogue and opportunities for learning in practice.

Integrationsprocessen i boendemiljö för människor medpsykiskt funktionshinder2008Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Committed to Life: Adolescents’ and Young Adults’ Experiences of Living with Fontan Circulation2015In: Congenital Heart Disease, ISSN 1747-079X, E-ISSN 1747-0803, Vol. 10, no 5, p. 403-412Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background Single ventricle defects are among the most complex congenital heart defects and the development of advanced surgical procedures in recent decades has created the first generation of adolescents and young adults living with this condition. Yet little is known about how these individuals experience life and what impact the heart defect has on their life in general. Objective The aim was to illuminate and gain a deeper understanding of adolescents’ and young adults’ experiences of living with a surgically palliated univentricular heart. Design Seven open-ended in-depth interviews were conducted, transcribed, and analyzed according to the henomenological hermeneutical method. All adolescents and young adults operated before 1995 according to the Fontan procedure or the total cavo-pulmonary connection procedure at one pediatric cardiology unit were included in the study. They were 17–32 years of age (median age 22 years). Results The interpretation of the interview transcripts showed that the participants experienced living with a surgically palliated univentricular heart in terms of feeling exceptional, strong, and healthy. This was supported by two structural analyses, where three themes emerged: happiness over being me, focusing on possibilities, and being committed to life. Conclusion Living with a Fontan circulation included negative experiences but the analyses clearly demonstrated a feeling of being strong and healthy. An appreciation of having survived and being committed to life was found to be an integral part of the development of the interviewees’ existential growth. This probably strengthens them further in their ability to balance expectations and hurdles in life. This study provides valuable insights into the experience of patients after the Fontan procedure and the importance of a positive health care environment throughout their lives.

Exploration of disagreement between the patient’s self reported limitations and limitations assessed by caregivers in adults with congenital heart disease2018In: European Heart Journal, ISSN 0195-668X, E-ISSN 1522-9645, Vol. 39, no Suppl 1, article id 2406Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification is applied in a wide spectrum of heart diseases including adult patients with congenital heart disease (ACHD). The NYHA-class assessment is often based on the evaluation by the caregiver, but to what extent it correlates with the patient's view of their function is not fully known.Purpose: To investigate the relation between the patient's self-reported physical limitations, symptoms, other heart defect related factors and NYHA-class assessed by the caregiver. Methods: Eligible patients (n=333, age 39.2±13.6 years) were identified and randomly selected from the national registry for CHD. All of the patients completed a standardized questionnaire measuring different PRO-domains. By combing self-reported data with registry data including NYHA-class, analyses of agreement of physical limitations were performed. Results: Almost 30% of the patients rated their limitations higher compared to the NYHA-class estimated by the caregiver. Patients with self-reported limitations and their NYHA-class underestimated by caregivers, more often reported symptoms, anxiety, lower health and worked fewer hours/week compared to other patients with CHD. There were no differences regarding sex, type of symptoms, prescribed medications, or complexity of cardiac lesion. In patients without self-reported limitations agreement with NYHA-class estimated by caregivers was 97%.Conclusion: Adult patients with CHD and self-reported limitations may not be correctly identified by the care-giver. Instruments for patient reported outcomes might improve the assessment of physical limitations and could further improve the correctness in evaluating the patient's status.

Comparison of participants and non-participants in patient-reported outcome surveys: the case of Assessment of Patterns of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Adults with Congenital Heart disease - International Study2017In: Cardiology in the Young, ISSN 1047-9511, E-ISSN 1467-1107, Vol. 27, no 3, p. 427-434Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The last decade has seen a vast increase in the use of patient-reported outcomes. As patient-reported outcomes are used in order to capture patients’ perspectives of their health and illness, it is a prerequisite for accurate patient-reported outcome evaluations to use representative samples. In order to evaluate representativeness, the present study focussed on the comparison between participants and non-participants in the Swedish branch of the international study APPROACH-IS (Assessment of Patterns of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Adults with Congenital Heart disease – International Study), regarding demographic, clinical, and health status characteristics. Methods: Eligible patients for APPROACH-IS were identified and selected from SWEDCON, the Swedish registry for congenital heart disease (CHD). Overall, 912 eligible patients were identified, of whom 471 participated, 398 did not participate, and 43 were either unreachable or declined to participate in APPROACH-IS. The participants and non-participants were compared in terms of statistical significance and effect sizes. Results: Significant differences were observed between participants and non-participants for sex, age, primary diagnosis, number of cardiac operations, and fatigue; however, the effect sizes were in general small, except for the difference in primary diagnosis. No differences between the two groups were found in number of catheterisations, implanted device, the distribution of NYHA functional class, or health status and symptoms. Conclusions: This study shows that participants and non-participants are relatively comparable groups, which confirms the representativeness of the participants. The Swedish data from APPROACH-IS can therefore be reliably generalised to the population of adults with CHD in Sweden. © Cambridge University Press 2016

    Abstract [en]

Background: Research on Sarcopenia shows that muscle atrophy affects the physical functioning during aging and can be prevented by various forms of strength training. Research on muscle atrophy aroused our interest in strength training for older adults and also the strength training effects on quality of life.

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate whether an increase in physical strength and explosiveness contributes to a better quality of life in people aged between 55 and 65 years.

Method: This has been explored with inspiration from action research in a group of fifteen participants. Data was collected with the instruments MuscleLab, SF-36v2 and memos.

Results: Nine participants showed an increase in power development and six participants showed a decrease. Quality of life has increased in all eight categories for the group as a whole, meaning that both the physical and mental health has increased in the group.

Conclusion: Increased strength and explosiveness does not, in our case, necessarily mean a better quality of life, but we consider that the change in quality of life rather depends on a higher level of activity in itself. This is because the strength of the group as a whole increased only marginally, but that quality of life has increased all the more.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to describe employees' expectations for their employment and to increase understanding of how the expectations influenced their work behaviour. The theoretical framework that was used was the concept of the psychological contract based on employee and employer perceptions of mutual obligations in an employment relationship. Depending on how the work situation develops, it can have negative and positive effects on the psychological contract (Robinson & Rousseau, 1994; Turney & Feldman, 2000). A psychological contract takes form in the process of recruitment, sometimes even earlier (Rousseau, 1995; Kahlke & Schmidt, 2002). In this study, employee's expectations of their employer, Göteborg Stad, and the development of the relationship with the employer during the first year of employment are examined. By interviewing six employers with a semi-structured interview, data were collected and analysed with a qualitative thematic analysis.

The results of the study showed that employers were predominantly relationship-oriented in their employment. Four relations were identified to have effects on the psychological contract; relationship to organizational structure, the manager, the colleagues and the task. Based on these relationships, there were both obstructive and motivating forces that could influence the employee's perception of the employment. Disappointments based on unmet expectations were in line with Schalk och Freese's theory (1993) to violate the psychological contract (Schalk & Freese, 1993; refererad i Anderson & Schalk, 1998). At the same time, meaningful relationships could create strong bonds to the employer and could ease the damage of a violated contract and make an incentive work situation. The results indicate the importance of communicating expectations on the employment relations to avoid losing motivation.

    Abstract [en]

In terms of traffic, in order for the infrastructure to work it requires that the road network fulfills its function. Communication between the different parties, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), municipalities and individual property owners is important, and situations with conflicts and disagreement are easy to evolve. Which part should manage the operation and maintenance to a certain road and what the laws say about each road are sometimes unclear. The Swedish Transport Administration, municipalities and individual property owners are the three different parties that can be responsible for operation and maintenance, also known as road holders, by roads. If the road is located within or outside of the planned area depends on which legislation is applicable. Planning and building act (PBL) and road legislation (VägL) are the laws used inside the planned area, but so is the plant legislation (AL) in the formation of community facilities. It is mainly the planning and building act that is applied because it regulates the planning, the road is then named street according to PBL, but in some cases the municipalities may choose to plan the road according to the road legislation. In cases where the road legislation is applied the process is more extensive and for this law to apply, the roads must be public. Outside planned area there is no law that regulates in the same way as the planning and building act, instead the plant legislation is applied for the individual roads mainly to establish a community facility. It is at the establishment of the community facilities the statutes are set, these regulate the operation and maintenance of the road which concerns the individual property owners. The study includes a survey conducted to 49 municipalities in the county Västra Götaland. Four of these municipalities were then selected for a further interview. The Swedish Transport Administration and National federation individual roads (Riksförbundet enskilda vägar) were also interviewed, this in order to get an overall view and not only information from different municipalities. The result is based primarily on the interviews but also the answers from the survey. The information that emerged from the interviews with the municipalities differs from the answers received from the survey whether the municipalities experience problems with managing individual roads. Instead, the municipalities mean that there are generally more problems in the planned area than outside. The result also indicates a variation between the municipalities, while the Swedish Transport Administration has clear limits on the selection of road holders. REV addresses the problem of the difficulty of getting people to arrange  ii Allmänna och enskilda vägar – Väghållaransvar utanför detaljplanelagt område  the board work on an individual road. The definition of public and individual road differs between the different interviewed parties. The study reflects on distinct guidelines for when a road should be public respectively individual in order to clarify the boundary of when road maintenance takes over and another ends.
