    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

New electric motors and drivelines are constantly being developed to progress with faster and more efficient electric cars. To match the growing industry it may be necessary to use existing equipment in new ways. NEVS have been requested to test electric motors with speeds up to 20 000 rpm, which they are currently not able to perform. The goal of the thesis work is to produce the foundation for an adapter system that will use the existing equipment in NEVS test cell TR6 to test directly driven electric machines with speeds up to 20 000 rpm.

In the methods section the limitations and demands are presented in which customer needs and relevant components are depicted to serve as a foundation for the development process. Included in the development method is for example a literature study, internal and external idea generation and concept selection matrices.

The result section describes the result of each section in the method and details the specifications of the suggested adapter system. The result section depicts the theoretical maximal load and performance of the dimensioning components and presents a concept for a complete system.

In the discussion section relevant components, aspects of the development process and the result of the thesis work are discussed. The conclusion is that the system concept satisfies the customer needs and is a possible option to expand on TR6's test range.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Nurses have an important role in identifying life-threatening and serious diseases. Nurses must be able to care for both children and adults but they feel that it is tough, demanding and stressful to care for urgently ill children.

Aim: The aim was to describe nurses´ experience of caring for ill children.

Method: Literature-based study in which ten qualitative research articles are rewied and analyzed.

Results: Three major categories were identified. "feelings of nurturing children" which included fear of failure, linked to their own children and emotions related to the situation. "need for knowledge" which included communication, care for children and stress. The last category was "present parents" which included pressure from parents, taking care of two patients and parents' influence on the child.

Conclusion: The nurse experienced insecurity and inadequacy in the care of acutely or urgently ill children. They experienced a lack of knowledge in child care.

    Abstract [en]

The thesis has been performed at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB in Trollhättan. The company manufactures combustors for gas turbines. The purpose of the work has been to investigate whether qualified measurements can be performed with Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB's measuring instruments. This study has been performed through a measurement system analysis. The purpose has also been to investigate whether it is possible to introduce statistical process control for a detail.

To carry out this study, the study designs case study and action research have been used. The case study has been for the measurement system analysis because it concerned a specific case that has been analyzed. Action research has been used to investigate statistical process management since the survey has been part of planning work for the introduction of an improvement. Measurements on a gauge block with known dimensions have also been made. The measurements were compiled in an Excel sheet and analyzed in Minitab. Then a VMEA was performed.

Analysis of the measurements made it clear that the operators vary in both repeatability and reproducibility. The measuring instrument has proved to be stable and not a basis for variation. The study on implementation of statistical process control has shown that it is not possible to be introduced because the measurement results are too unstable. This leads to the company having to review its measurement methods to achieve a reduced spread of the measurement results. That the study has not used enough measuring objects for a statistically correct result should be emphasized. Consideration should therefore be taken that the result of the study is not entirely reliable, but rather indicate that it is a probable result that has emerged. Suggestions that have emerged during the study is:

    • The details are placed indoors long enough before they are measured.

    • The company introduces a separate, customized room for measuring the details.

    • The company reviews the work methodology for the measurements.

    • The company updates work instructions for measurements.

    • The company introduces measurement training for operators.

What has not been made is the actual introduction and making of user data for statistical process control. This is because the measurement results have a too great variation for the use of SPS.

    Abstract [en]

Background The mental illness in society are increasing both nationally and internationally. In Sweden, about 40 percent of the population has at some point been affected by mental illness. Lack of nurses as well as savings in health and medical care with reduced hospital beds within the psychiatric inpatient care affect the healthcare environment in which staff and patients resides. Knowledge is needed about how nurses experience their care environment in order to continuously improve the possibilities of providing good care within the psychiatric inpatient care. Aim The aim of this study was to illuminate nurses' experiences of the care environment's importance in psychiatric care. Method The study was performed at a psychiatric clinic in southern Sweden. Ten nurses were interviewed individually about their experiences of the importance of the care environment with semi-structured interview questions. The data material was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results Two domains emerged, The ward's physical care environment with categories: The design of the premises, Locked doors and Surroundings outside the ward. The ward´s psychosocial care environment with categories: Ward atmosphere, Protocol, Structure and rules, Work group, Stress and Nursing. Conclusion The healthcare environment are important for nurses' ability to provide good care in psychiatric inpatient care. Both positive and negative factors emerged during the analysis. The nurses described that their care environment was not designed to the care that was given, but that they did the best they could with the conditions that existed

    Abstract [en]

Background: Type 1 Diabetes is a complex disease that the affected have to live with for the rest of their lives. The incidence among children and youth around the world are increasing and appear in increasingly younger ages. Living with a chronic disease like diabetes involves several changes in everyday life in terms of diet, exercise and insulin. It requires careful planning, good knowledge and time to get to know their body and know how to take care of it the best way. For children and young people this may mean additional difficulties when they are already at various stages of development, which can be tough enough. The aim of this study was to highlight children's and adolescence experiences of living with diabetes mellitus type 1. The method used was a qualitative literature-based study. Sixteen scientific articles found from the databases Cinahl and PubMed were included. The analyzed data were described in themes with two or three sub- themes each.

The result shows the three main themes: The implications of changes in everyday life, Thoughts and emotions and Support. The overall findings show that diabetes in some way changes the childrens and adolescence daily life. The conclusions of this is that children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes may experience changes that can imply restrictions, but also can give strength and self-awareness. Support from the environment can also be considered to have a significant role in how everyday life can be managed.

Små och okomplicerade projekt inom infrastrukturplanering: En studie i hur Trafikverket använder typfall 12015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Spatial planning of land and water is an important part of a community’s structure and development. Community planning is a democratic process, regulated by several laws and it’s contributing to a sustainable living environment from a social, ecological and economic perspective.

Trafikverket (The Swedish Transport Agency) is the authority in Sweden which is responsible for infrastructure planning. According to the Swedish Road Law and Railway Law, the one intending to build new infrastructure, must establish a road or railway plan, which often is a long and costly process. In January 1, 2013 changes were introduced in to the law to exclude small and uncomplicated projects from the formal planning process, to create a more effective infrastructure planning system. These small projects were given the name type case 1 (typfall 1), in the planning system of Trafikveket.

The purpose of the study is to examine how the changes in the law from 2013 have been used in the planning process by Trafikverket. The study intends to investigate which type of project the law changes has applied on and how they conform with the intentions that they should be small and uncomplicated. It will also investigate how the changes are received and perceived by those involved in infrastructure planning.

The methods used to answer the questions is document study and focused interviews. The documents study includes all the planned projects from Region Väst (Western Region) from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2014. The interviews were conducted with project managers and consultants who all have experience in the planning of small and uncomplicated projects.

The results shows that Trafikverket mainly uses the new changes in the law to build bus stops, left fields and roundabouts, and it has been applied to significantly more road projects than railway projects. The projects is varying in size since the new guidelines have been interpreted in different ways.

The conclusion is that changes in the law have contributed to a more efficient planning process. The project managers overall have a positive attitude to implement smaller projects without a formal plan, but the guidelines on witch background material needed for a project should be more clear.

Barnet och bilderboken: En kvalitativ studie om barns bilderboksanvändande I förskolan2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In order to get a good economic growth in the community, as well as a fully functioning labor market, competence is an important prerequisite. Competence is not only about the amount of years a person has studied at the university, instead its more about lifelong learning that takes place outside traditional education systems. During the passage of time, human resources and skills gained in importance while today's employees have much higher education. Despite this, there seems to be a shortage in some organizations when it comes to skills development.

The purpose of this study is to examine what the work of strategic competence can look like. In the work we have chosen to interview three organization employees with HR responsibility to see what tools they use to plan and work with skills development. We've chosen to adopt a qualitative approach in the form of interviews to get a picture of how the tasks are done.

The result of this work has been based on empirical data, wich later is linked to the theory section parts. Based on this we have drawn connections and interpretations which are later summarized in the analysis and conclusion. The result we reached was that the concept of competence was interpreted differently between the various organizations we worked with. Organizations' common view was that competence has a significant role to achieve success.

    Abstract [en]

How should the retail stores work with their customer relationships to successfully retain their customers in a time of increased competition in the form of accessible e-commerce?

This work aims to provide a deeper knowledge of how a company should work on creating good customer relationships. The work also provides an updated view on how an established retail company such as Hennes & Mauritz works with customer service and how well it meets the service requirements of todays customers.

The work includes a literature survey, which refers to the customer and their service expectations. To get a better view on how actual customers and shop assistants look at customer relationships, the work also include an empirical study that is prepared in the form of a questionnaire survey, two shorter interviews with employees at Hennes & Mauritz and an organizational survey. These two parts will in the end be the answer to our question

Sexual function after failed ileal pouch-anal anastomosis2011In: Journal of Crohn's and Colitis, ISSN 1873-9946, Vol. 5, no 5, p. 407-414Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background and Aims

Failure of ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) occurs in around 10% of the patients. Compared to patients with functioning pouches, health related quality of life is deteriorated after failure. Sexual function in patients with pouch failure is however poorly studied.

The aim was to study sexual function in patients with pelvic pouch failure; patients with functioning pouches were used as controls. The hypothesis was that patients with pouch failure have worse sexual function.

    Methods

36 patients with pouch failure were compared with 72 age and sex-matched controls with ulcerative colitis and functioning pouches. The patients answered a set of questionnaires concerning sexual function (Female Sexual Function Index [FSFI] and International Index of Erectile Function [IIEF]), body image (BIS-scale) and health-related quality of life (SF-36).

    Results

Both women and men with pouch failure scored lower than controls in the FSFI and IIEF questionnaires. However, none of the observations were statistically significant. The scores in the failure group (for both sexes) were below the cut-off level for sexual dysfunction. Scores for the BIS instrument were significantly lower for both sexes in the failure group. Women and men in the failure group scored lower than the controls in all domains of the SF-36, however statistically significant only for the social function domain in men.

    Conclusions

The hypothesis, that a failed IPAA is associated with worse sexual function, was not confirmed. Compared to patients with functioning pouches, patients with pouch failure have inferior body image.

I dödens närvaro: Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att möta döende patienter inom palliativ vård2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Nurses meet patients in palliative care in different wards, in homecare and hospices. The role of the nurse is to provide patients and relatives with good care. A holistic care includes psychological, physical, social and spiritual needs.

Aim: The aim of the study was to highlight experiences of nurses meeting dying patients in palliative care.

Method: The method to contribute to an evidence-based care based on analysis of qualitative research as described by Friberg (2012) was chosen for the study. Ten scientific articles were analyzed and the result was three categories, with eight sub-categories.

Results: The three categories were: death leaves nobody untouched, relations in the shadow of death, and needs on the environment when death approaches. Nurses described their reactions and feelings in relation to the care of a patient in the palliative phase, emotions that both concern and strain. The relationships were important in palliative care, both with patients and relatives. Aspects such as environment, colleagues and knowledge were of importance to a nurse in palliative care.

Conclusion: Experiences to meet dying patients in palliative care were described as demanding, but also a privilege. It was considered important to include and to co-operate with the patients’ relatives. The colleagues were needed to provide a good care for the dying patient. Nurses reach security through continuous development of knowledge, experience and reflections.

Jämförelse av hjälpkraftssystem för HVDC-stationer2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about two different HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) connections in the North Sea. They are called DolWin1 and DolWin2, both of them are designed by ABB. This essay will with the help of ABB's documentation describe the low voltage switchgear (LVS) of the HVDC converter stations, compare the different solutions and present the advantages and disadvantages of the systems. The low voltage switchgear is a part of the auxiliary power systems of the stations. The purpose of the auxiliary power system is to deliver electrical power to breakers, cooling systems, ventilation and other loads necessary to keep the converter stations functional.

DolWin1 was the first connection of the two to be constructed and it was completed in 2014. DolWin1 was designed by ABB Sweden and DolWin2 was designed by ABB in Germany. DolWin2 has a bit more capacity and the connection is not yet fully completed. [1]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Hög arbetsbelastning och stress: En kvalitativ fallstudie inom läraryrket2016Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Patients often suffer from harm and infections when in contact with healthcare. Harm caused by the healthcare imply unnecessary suffering for the patient which the healthcare could have prevented. Being a nurse comes with the responsibility of relieving suffering and preventing harm.

Aim: The aim of the study was to illuminate the patient safety, focusing on identity check, hygiene routines and management of peripheral venous catheter (PVC), in an emergency ward in Namibia.

Method: This is an empirical study with a qualitative approach. To gather data, six unstructured observations were carried out. The data was analyzed by using Friberg's five-step-model.

Results: Two main themes emerged during the analysis; Patient safety work and Non-patient safety work and six sub themes; Use of hand disinfection and single-use gloves, Skillful insertion of PVC and safe management of sharps waste, Lack of identity check, Inadequate use of hand disinfection and single-use gloves, Inadequate approach before and after insertion of PVC and Insufficient conditions in work environment.

Conclusion: Hand hygiene was the main problem of patient safety. A work environment where hygiene material is more easily accessible could be a contributing factor to a more patient-safe approach. Identification of patients before insertion of PVC does not appear to be a routine at the emergency ward. Nurses at the emergency ward are skillful at inserting PVC:s, but are failing in other aspects in the procedure.

    Abstract [en]

The intent of this paper is to examine the conditions for Swedish filmmakers with the short film format as final goal. Through a qualitative study we investigate what paths there are for distributing short films through the digital platforms available today. We do this by interviewing some of the most experienced and successful short film creators in Sweden and one of Sweden's main financier in film creation, to provide as just image of the branch as we can.

Short films with financing from the state and regional financiers rarely has any focus on economic gain. They are rather intended to help form filmmakers and give them an opportunity to establish themselves prior to further filmmaking.

The main digital platform in Sweden is SVT Play, witch is much based on the fact that SVT is part of sponsoring a big part of the government financed short films. The greatest problem we found is the availability for short films through digital platforms, since SVT Play most often has exclusive rights and only buy viewing rights during periods.

When you want to distribute your short film, the most important aspect is the context, the film should not only appeal the audience it reaches but it also has to appeal the audience in the situation where it reaches them.

Producing and consuming knowledge in social work practice: Research and development activities in a Swedish context.2009In: Evidence and policy, ISSN 1744-2648, Vol. 5, no 2, p. 127-139Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to describe how experince-based knowledge can be made visible by giving some examples of how this has been done in Swedish social welfare services, in collaborations between social services agencies and research and development (R&D) units. These examples will be linked to theories and discussed in relation to different research utilisation models. By using one of these models, it is argued that R&D activities can broaden the concept of evidence-based practice and help brigde the gap between research and practice.

    Abstract [en]

Since 2003 the University West in Sweden offers distance courses in Social work and Social pedagogy. The three year program is given in collaboration with a number of local learning centers throughout the country. The technology of videoconferencing enables the teacher to interact with students even though they are separated geographically.

The study deals with this kind of education seen from the perspective of both students and teachers. The main objective is to illuminate significant aspects of this kind of phenomenon in terms of how students and teachers describe and experience problems and potential embedded in this model. The discussion rests on four overall questions:

    1) What are the motives for students to choose this kind of education?

    2) What kind of expectations did the students have before they started the program?

    3) How do students experience/describe strengths and weaknesses connected to this model?

    4) What experiences do the teacher's have working with this kind of distance education?

The empirical data has been collected using mainly group interviews and observations. The analysis rests heavily on theories concerning symbolic interactionism and socio-cultural learning. The study underlines that both students and teachers embrace the potential in this form of education, giving more groups the possibility of combining their studies with a sense of regional belonging. However the interviews and observations also reveal weaknesses with this kind of educational model. There is a risk that students at the local learning centers consider themselves as being excluded by teachers and other students at campus; and that the gap between the university and the local learning centers becomes too wide. To prevent this from happening communication and confirmation from the teacher is crucial. But eventhough this scrutiny identifies weaknesses within the technology of videoconferencing, technology alone does not determine the outcome of the teaching. If a teacher manages to show great engagement and structure, this functions as a mechanism weakening the barrierof technology. At the same time it is clear that the model of videoconferencing, from a teacher perspective, can be an obstacle, which emphasizes the importance of developing the technology further and how this technology is being handled by the teacher.

Finally, we consider the model with local learning centers and videoconferencing as a unique model for education, but that the model, when it comes to areas such as pedagogy, organization and technology, must be allowed to function and develop according to its own premises.

Teknisk och ekonomisk analys av svetsmetoden HF-TIG i Ti-6Al-4V2018Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

GKN Aerospace Sweden AB belongs to one of the four divisions within GKN and has most of its operations in Trollhättan, where development, manufacturing and maintenance are performed on components for jet engines. GKN is more than 250 years old and has nearly 60 000 employees, of whom approximately 2 200 works in Trollhättan.

The aim of the thesis was to evaluate the high frequency tungsten inert gas (HF-TIG) welding method technically and economically for potential future implementation in GKN's production. The hope is that the welding method can contribute to a more stable manufacturing process with fewer delays and reduced quality deficiency costs on the product XWB-ICC (Xtra Wide Body – Intermediate Compressor Case), where today conventional TIG welding is applied. The existing welding method creates deviations in the quality of certain weld joints due to high thermal impact, and according to previous studies, HF-TIG should have a lower thermal impact on the material compared to conventional TIG welding. The project group, in consultation with the supervisors at GKN and University West, has delineated the work to titanium plates with 1.5mm thickness which has been welded "bead-on-plate" without filler material during the experiments.

Literature studies in HF-TIG, design of experiments, investment assessment and quality deficiency costs have combined with welding experiments, data collection, measurement of results and meetings with staff at GKN contributed to good knowledge of HF-TIG technical and economic impact on GKN. This has been evaluated and compiled to be able to report a technical and financial result for a potential future implementation.

In the study's design of experiment, the tip angle of the electrode, frequency, balance and the relationship between background current and peak current have been selected as factors to be investigated. The result shows that all factors affect the measured welding results in one way or another. This provides an understanding of the welding process and indicates which factors can reduce costs, caused by lack of quality.

In conclusion, project participants together with GKN supervisors estimated a 25% reduction of quality deficiency costs for five specific welds on XWB-ICC. The result shows that an implementation of HF-TIG is economically profitable for GKN.

    Abstract [en]

Background: In child health care immunization is a common task for the child health nurse. Often children are unprepared, afraid and preoccupied with pain in the vaccination situation. Most children experience the presence of the parents as important during the procedure. Parents who prepare their child reduce the child's stress during the vaccination situation. An interaction occurs between the child health nurse and the child where participation is a prerequisite for the experience to be a positive outcome. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe the child health nurses' experiences of vaccinating children aged 0-6 years.Method: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were performed with twelve child health nurses. Data was analyzed using a content analysis focusing in manifest content. Results: Child health nurses' experiences of vaccinating commuted between the sense of power and confident. The crucial experience was the support and cooperation that the child health nurses experienced with the parents. It emerged a theme: Participation, three main categories: Sense of power, sense of confidence and cooperation with parents and six subcategories: Abuse, powerlessness, experiences, strategies, common goals and approaches and different goals and approaches. Conclusion: The result indicates that the parents have a dominant role in the vaccination situations with the ability to affect the health nurse's experience. Child health nurse, child and parents must cooperate to vaccinations to be carried out and be perceived in a positive way

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose with our study is to examine and analyze how staff in home care services perceive their work situation as well as in what way relations with colleagues or clients may have an impact on this experience. We have chosen a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews, which builds on the experience of the interviewed individuals. Our main perspective in this study is the social pedagogy. The theoretical frame consists of social networks and the concepts community and thin networks. The collected data has been coded, categorized, thematised and analyzed in relation to former research and the theoretical perspectives. Our study results indicates that the personnel in home care services feels that they have a good and rewarding work. The contact with the users is experienced as very positive and as the main reason for them to go to work. The personnel also describe the working group as very important and it is to the colleagues they turn to get support. The result of this study clearly shows that relations are of great importance for the individuals understanding of their work situation.

A study on lexical inferencing: to what extent, and in what ways, do pupils make use of the lexical inferencing strategies, learnt in school when they encounter and unknown English word in their spare time?2006Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: During our VFU (Workplace-based Education), we met a teacher, who worked with metacognitive strategies, and used a holistic, top-down approach with her pupils. The teacher had been working with them in this way for three years. We wanted to know how the pupils used lexical inferencing strategies they had learned about in school, in their spare time outside school. Purpose and aim: The purpose of the study was to examine the use of lexical inferencing strategies and the aim was to find out whether pupils who had been encouraged to use lexical inferencing strategies in classroom teaching actually used these strategies when encountering unknown English words in their spare time. Method: We used a qualitative, semi-structured group interview, with an interview guide approach as method to achieve descriptions of the lived world of our interviewees. Eighteen out of 24 pupils in a 9th grade class were interviewed. We conducted six interviews, since the pupils were interviewed in groups of three. During the process of data analysis four different categories of strategy use emerged. Results: The results of our study showed that the pupils used the following strategies when encountering an English word outside school: avoidance, referring to another resource, inferencing from context and metalinguistic knowledge. The results also showed that even though the pupils are trained to use these strategies in school, they did not use them consistently in free time encounters with English language texts

    Abstract [en]

Background and problem - Negative environmental impacts are increasing due to various global development trends and sustainability reporting is growing among companies. To get a comparability between companies' sustainability work GRI can be used which publishes guidelines for what and how companies should report. Previous research shows that there are differences between sectors in what they choose to report.Purpose - The study aims to examine how sustainability reporting differs between industries in Sweden and what these differences are caused by.

Delimitation - The study has been limited to analysing major Swedish listed companies' sustainability reports, published in 2014, which applies the Global Reporting Initiative guidelines. Only companies' work on environmental and social responsibility have been studied. Method - In the study a quantitative survey approach has been used to make it easier to measure and compile the collected empirical data. Information has been gathered from companies' annual and sustainability reports, as well as their web pages. Data has through content analysis been reworked to facilitate the information management.

Results and conclusions - The study shows that there are differences between the analysed industries since some of them reported a greater extent than others. The material industry is the sector that accounts for most information while the health industry reports the least. Greenhouse effect, energy usage and information about employees are those indicators that are reported most frequently among all companies. Proposal for further research - In continued research, a similar survey can be done but where interviews are conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the corporates sustainability work. A comparison between the public and private sectors as well as examining sustainability reporting over time are also suggestions for further research.

Mobile robot navigation and control: Applied on PatrolBot2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

University west have a production line where a mobile robot could be used in the future for education or research. The production line uses multiple PLCs for control of industrial robots and other machines. To be able to use the mobile robot system it is necessary to have some kind of communication between the mobile robot system and the existing communication in the production line. This project solves this by using the standardized Modbus protocol to connect a PLC to a server running Debian Linux that controls all ro-bots. All additional programming is supposed to be done in the PLC when this system is used. This is because of the frequent use of PLC in industries and ease of debugging. The communication between the PLC and server is setting register values through Modbus for moving robots to targets and getting info from server to PLC. In this project an HMI is created that is a control panel for the mobile robot system. The HMI is created with a fo-cus on being easy to use and quick to learn. A typical application in an industrial environment for mobile robots is to move items between different robot cells. The problem is that a regular industrial robot might need the mobile robot to be within a few millimetres precision to be able to grasp the item and move it, depending on the tool used. This project measured the accuracy of going to targets with the PatrolBot robot. This showed that the robot might need a complementary system like vision for localizing the robot at the loading and unloading stations if moving items between different robot cells.

    Abstract [en]

The aim is to find out how to develop a system for automated homes, where users can eas-ily connect custom built equipment. An example would be controlling a sprinkler or meas-uring wind speed. It should also be possible to develop more advanced accessories.

To create a system that meets this, the system must have a central system to coordinate de-vices and data. We also need an open interface for communication between the central and the user devices. One should replace direct change in code and database center to instead create graphical interface to the users, it makes it easier for them to learn the system. One should not, however, restrict user freedom to develop units, more than the functionality of the interface and the center's configuration options. Parts of the requirements was imple-mented in a prototype, to confirm that the system works in reality. The prototype is based on a server with Debian as central in the home. For example, it can take a decision whether the alarm will go off or if a lamp should light. The user should easily be able to give in-structions to the central and reprogram how it should behave. Users can develop their own equipment and then simply connect it to the central and configure it via various web-based tools. In this way, accessories are created and connected without changing anything on the server more than the contents of the database. To test the system we created a modular house that is two walls in a cross, where equipment and central system are placed. Since power and lock bolt where used, this resulted in that some disruption where noticed and removed

Verification and deployment of automatically generated robot programs used in prefabrication of house walls2018In: Procedia CIRP, ISSN 2212-8271, E-ISSN 2212-8271, Vol. 72, p. 272-276Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a method for automating the generation, verification and deployment of robot programs used in prefabrication of walls for family houses. The making of robot programs is today performed manually by experts, i.e. implying high costs. This is a huge disadvantage since each wall can be unique. The work demonstrates, with implementation and testing, a method to automate the generation of robot programs for fabrication of walls made of wood. This includes the task of generating collision free paths, automatic verification of path performance and deploying to a real industrial robot with minimal human interaction. © 2018 The Authors. Green machining: improving the bottom line2009Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to present how Green machining can be established in the metal working industry for taking immediate actions towards a more environmental friendly manufacturing, but also to address areas for research in order to advance towards a more sustainable manufacturing industry. An often overlooked approach is to use the knowledge about the specific cutting energy and its dependency upon machining parameters in order to establish a machining strategy that leads towards a more energy efficient production, but also contributes to increased productivity and thereby improving the bottom line as well. The paper has a production preparation perspective and thus presents the areas where a green machining strategy is applicable.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper a methodology is described to conduct temperature measurement on the cutting edges and the clearance faces on twist drills using a fibre optic two color pyrometer. Two measuring positions of the fibre were used in order to determine the temperature at two different locations, centre and outer corner of the drill. The measurements were carried out on a stationary work piece and a rotating drill. The work piece materials ranged from tool steel, aged Inconel 718, Ti6-4 to carbon epoxy fibre composite. All experiments were conducted in dry machining conditions.© 2012 The Authors.

The Use of Machine Tool Internal Encoders as Sensors in a Process Monitoring System2013In: International Journal of Automation Technology, ISSN 1881-7629, E-ISSN 1883-8022, Vol. 7, no 4, p. 410-417Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Tool wear in machining changes the geometry of the cutting edges, which affects the direction and amplitudes of the cutting force components and the dynamics in the machining process. These changes in the forces and dynamics are picked up by the internal encoders and thus can be used for monitoring of changes in process conditions. This paper presents an approach for the monitoring of a multi-tooth milling process. The method is based on the direct measurement of the output from the position encoders available in the machine tool and the application of advanced signal analysis methods.

The paper investigates repeatability of the developed method and discusses how to implement this in a process monitoring and control system. The results of this work show that various signal features which are correlated with tool wear can be extracted from the first few oscillating components, representing the low-frequency components, of the machine axes velocity signatures. The responses from the position encoders exhibit good repeatability, especially short term repeatability while the long-term repeatability is more unreliable.
