    Abstract [en]

Since 2003 the University West in Sweden offers distance courses in Social work and Social pedagogy. The three year program is given in collaboration with a number of local learning centers throughout the country. The technology of videoconferencing enables the teacher to interact with students even though they are separated geographically.

The study deals with this kind of education seen from the perspective of both students and teachers. The main objective is to illuminate significant aspects of this kind of phenomenon in terms of how students and teachers describe and experience problems and potential embedded in this model. The discussion rests on four overall questions:

    1) What are the motives for students to choose this kind of education?

    2) What kind of expectations did the students have before they started the program?

    3) How do students experience/describe strengths and weaknesses connected to this model?

    4) What experiences do the teacher's have working with this kind of distance education?

The empirical data has been collected using mainly group interviews and observations. The analysis rests heavily on theories concerning symbolic interactionism and socio-cultural learning. The study underlines that both students and teachers embrace the potential in this form of education, giving more groups the possibility of combining their studies with a sense of regional belonging. However the interviews and observations also reveal weaknesses with this kind of educational model. There is a risk that students at the local learning centers consider themselves as being excluded by teachers and other students at campus; and that the gap between the university and the local learning centers becomes too wide. To prevent this from happening communication and confirmation from the teacher is crucial. But eventhough this scrutiny identifies weaknesses within the technology of videoconferencing, technology alone does not determine the outcome of the teaching. If a teacher manages to show great engagement and structure, this functions as a mechanism weakening the barrierof technology. At the same time it is clear that the model of videoconferencing, from a teacher perspective, can be an obstacle, which emphasizes the importance of developing the technology further and how this technology is being handled by the teacher.

Finally, we consider the model with local learning centers and videoconferencing as a unique model for education, but that the model, when it comes to areas such as pedagogy, organization and technology, must be allowed to function and develop according to its own premises.

Teknisk och ekonomisk analys av svetsmetoden HF-TIG i Ti-6Al-4V2018Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

GKN Aerospace Sweden AB belongs to one of the four divisions within GKN and has most of its operations in Trollhättan, where development, manufacturing and maintenance are performed on components for jet engines. GKN is more than 250 years old and has nearly 60 000 employees, of whom approximately 2 200 works in Trollhättan.

The aim of the thesis was to evaluate the high frequency tungsten inert gas (HF-TIG) welding method technically and economically for potential future implementation in GKN's production. The hope is that the welding method can contribute to a more stable manufacturing process with fewer delays and reduced quality deficiency costs on the product XWB-ICC (Xtra Wide Body – Intermediate Compressor Case), where today conventional TIG welding is applied. The existing welding method creates deviations in the quality of certain weld joints due to high thermal impact, and according to previous studies, HF-TIG should have a lower thermal impact on the material compared to conventional TIG welding. The project group, in consultation with the supervisors at GKN and University West, has delineated the work to titanium plates with 1.5mm thickness which has been welded "bead-on-plate" without filler material during the experiments.

Literature studies in HF-TIG, design of experiments, investment assessment and quality deficiency costs have combined with welding experiments, data collection, measurement of results and meetings with staff at GKN contributed to good knowledge of HF-TIG technical and economic impact on GKN. This has been evaluated and compiled to be able to report a technical and financial result for a potential future implementation.

In the study's design of experiment, the tip angle of the electrode, frequency, balance and the relationship between background current and peak current have been selected as factors to be investigated. The result shows that all factors affect the measured welding results in one way or another. This provides an understanding of the welding process and indicates which factors can reduce costs, caused by lack of quality.

In conclusion, project participants together with GKN supervisors estimated a 25% reduction of quality deficiency costs for five specific welds on XWB-ICC. The result shows that an implementation of HF-TIG is economically profitable for GKN.

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose with our study is to examine and analyze how staff in home care services perceive their work situation as well as in what way relations with colleagues or clients may have an impact on this experience. We have chosen a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews, which builds on the experience of the interviewed individuals. Our main perspective in this study is the social pedagogy. The theoretical frame consists of social networks and the concepts community and thin networks. The collected data has been coded, categorized, thematised and analyzed in relation to former research and the theoretical perspectives. Our study results indicates that the personnel in home care services feels that they have a good and rewarding work. The contact with the users is experienced as very positive and as the main reason for them to go to work. The personnel also describe the working group as very important and it is to the colleagues they turn to get support. The result of this study clearly shows that relations are of great importance for the individuals understanding of their work situation.

A study on lexical inferencing: to what extent, and in what ways, do pupils make use of the lexical inferencing strategies, learnt in school when they encounter and unknown English word in their spare time?2006Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: During our VFU (Workplace-based Education), we met a teacher, who worked with metacognitive strategies, and used a holistic, top-down approach with her pupils. The teacher had been working with them in this way for three years. We wanted to know how the pupils used lexical inferencing strategies they had learned about in school, in their spare time outside school. Purpose and aim: The purpose of the study was to examine the use of lexical inferencing strategies and the aim was to find out whether pupils who had been encouraged to use lexical inferencing strategies in classroom teaching actually used these strategies when encountering unknown English words in their spare time. Method: We used a qualitative, semi-structured group interview, with an interview guide approach as method to achieve descriptions of the lived world of our interviewees. Eighteen out of 24 pupils in a 9th grade class were interviewed. We conducted six interviews, since the pupils were interviewed in groups of three. During the process of data analysis four different categories of strategy use emerged. Results: The results of our study showed that the pupils used the following strategies when encountering an English word outside school: avoidance, referring to another resource, inferencing from context and metalinguistic knowledge. The results also showed that even though the pupils are trained to use these strategies in school, they did not use them consistently in free time encounters with English language texts

Förstudie till ett stadstäckande och öppet WiFi i Trollhättan2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background and problem - Negative environmental impacts are increasing due to various global development trends and sustainability reporting is growing among companies. To get a comparability between companies' sustainability work GRI can be used which publishes guidelines for what and how companies should report. Previous research shows that there are differences between sectors in what they choose to report.Purpose - The study aims to examine how sustainability reporting differs between industries in Sweden and what these differences are caused by.

Delimitation - The study has been limited to analysing major Swedish listed companies' sustainability reports, published in 2014, which applies the Global Reporting Initiative guidelines. Only companies' work on environmental and social responsibility have been studied. Method - In the study a quantitative survey approach has been used to make it easier to measure and compile the collected empirical data. Information has been gathered from companies' annual and sustainability reports, as well as their web pages. Data has through content analysis been reworked to facilitate the information management.

Results and conclusions - The study shows that there are differences between the analysed industries since some of them reported a greater extent than others. The material industry is the sector that accounts for most information while the health industry reports the least. Greenhouse effect, energy usage and information about employees are those indicators that are reported most frequently among all companies. Proposal for further research - In continued research, a similar survey can be done but where interviews are conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the corporates sustainability work. A comparison between the public and private sectors as well as examining sustainability reporting over time are also suggestions for further research.

Mobile robot navigation and control: Applied on PatrolBot2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

University west have a production line where a mobile robot could be used in the future for education or research. The production line uses multiple PLCs for control of industrial robots and other machines. To be able to use the mobile robot system it is necessary to have some kind of communication between the mobile robot system and the existing communication in the production line. This project solves this by using the standardized Modbus protocol to connect a PLC to a server running Debian Linux that controls all ro-bots. All additional programming is supposed to be done in the PLC when this system is used. This is because of the frequent use of PLC in industries and ease of debugging. The communication between the PLC and server is setting register values through Modbus for moving robots to targets and getting info from server to PLC. In this project an HMI is created that is a control panel for the mobile robot system. The HMI is created with a fo-cus on being easy to use and quick to learn. A typical application in an industrial environment for mobile robots is to move items between different robot cells. The problem is that a regular industrial robot might need the mobile robot to be within a few millimetres precision to be able to grasp the item and move it, depending on the tool used. This project measured the accuracy of going to targets with the PatrolBot robot. This showed that the robot might need a complementary system like vision for localizing the robot at the loading and unloading stations if moving items between different robot cells.

    Abstract [en]

The aim is to find out how to develop a system for automated homes, where users can eas-ily connect custom built equipment. An example would be controlling a sprinkler or meas-uring wind speed. It should also be possible to develop more advanced accessories.

To create a system that meets this, the system must have a central system to coordinate de-vices and data. We also need an open interface for communication between the central and the user devices. One should replace direct change in code and database center to instead create graphical interface to the users, it makes it easier for them to learn the system. One should not, however, restrict user freedom to develop units, more than the functionality of the interface and the center's configuration options. Parts of the requirements was imple-mented in a prototype, to confirm that the system works in reality. The prototype is based on a server with Debian as central in the home. For example, it can take a decision whether the alarm will go off or if a lamp should light. The user should easily be able to give in-structions to the central and reprogram how it should behave. Users can develop their own equipment and then simply connect it to the central and configure it via various web-based tools. In this way, accessories are created and connected without changing anything on the server more than the contents of the database. To test the system we created a modular house that is two walls in a cross, where equipment and central system are placed. Since power and lock bolt where used, this resulted in that some disruption where noticed and removed

    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a method for automating the generation, verification and deployment of robot programs used in prefabrication of walls for family houses. The making of robot programs is today performed manually by experts, i.e. implying high costs. This is a huge disadvantage since each wall can be unique. The work demonstrates, with implementation and testing, a method to automate the generation of robot programs for fabrication of walls made of wood. This includes the task of generating collision free paths, automatic verification of path performance and deploying to a real industrial robot with minimal human interaction. © 2018 The Authors. Green machining: improving the bottom line2009Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to present how Green machining can be established in the metal working industry for taking immediate actions towards a more environmental friendly manufacturing, but also to address areas for research in order to advance towards a more sustainable manufacturing industry. An often overlooked approach is to use the knowledge about the specific cutting energy and its dependency upon machining parameters in order to establish a machining strategy that leads towards a more energy efficient production, but also contributes to increased productivity and thereby improving the bottom line as well. The paper has a production preparation perspective and thus presents the areas where a green machining strategy is applicable.

The Use of Machine Tool Internal Encoders as Sensors in a Process Monitoring System2013In: International Journal of Automation Technology, ISSN 1881-7629, E-ISSN 1883-8022, Vol. 7, no 4, p. 410-417Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Tool wear in machining changes the geometry of the cutting edges, which affects the direction and amplitudes of the cutting force components and the dynamics in the machining process. These changes in the forces and dynamics are picked up by the internal encoders and thus can be used for monitoring of changes in process conditions. This paper presents an approach for the monitoring of a multi-tooth milling process. The method is based on the direct measurement of the output from the position encoders available in the machine tool and the application of advanced signal analysis methods.

The paper investigates repeatability of the developed method and discusses how to implement this in a process monitoring and control system. The results of this work show that various signal features which are correlated with tool wear can be extracted from the first few oscillating components, representing the low-frequency components, of the machine axes velocity signatures. The responses from the position encoders exhibit good repeatability, especially short term repeatability while the long-term repeatability is more unreliable.

Människa i första hand: En etnografisk studie av en mötesplats för socialt utsatta, med fokus på besökarnas upplevelser av bemötande och inklusion2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Äldre personer med diabetes mellitus och deras upplevelse av egenvård: En litteraturöversikt2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Diabetes is a growing health problem and the risk of getting diabetes is increasing with age. Beside diabetes, older persons often have several diseases which makes their situation complex. Self-care is an important part of treatment and how the older persons experience this is relatively unknown. The aim of the literature review was to investigate how older persons with diabetes experience self-care to find out how support for self-care can be developed. Systematic searches were made in the databases Cinahl, Pub/Medline and PsychInfo for the period 2007-2017. Fifteen articles were found and analysed using a descriptive synthesis. Three themes were identified: 1) To be responsive to the body's signals, 2) To be able to understand the life situation, and 3) To participate creates security. Older persons with diabetes usually had good knowledge of self-care but had difficulty to perform it. The result indicates that to support older people with diabetes to self-care, nurses need more knowledge how to involve and support older people in their care, create support-groups and meeting others with the same diagnosis, and develop a person-centred action plan.

    Abstract [en]

The importance of auditor independence is based on providing reliable information to stakeholders. If the auditor is partial in the audit, the financial report is at greater risk to provide deceptive information to stakeholder and their decisions will be based on inaccurate information. Based on previous research, three critical situations, where the auditor independence could be threatened, were identified. These situations are when the auditor offers consulting services, when there is a long-term customer relationship and when the customer is either financially or personally important to the auditor. Previous research differs from what consequences this implies, for example how audit quality is affected. Furthermore, accurate statement regarding the company's going concern can be equated with good audit quality. These statements do not in itself constitute a threat to independence, but an effect that the auditor in his audit is not independent may be that he does not make correct statements about the company's going concern. Based upon this, the intention of the study was to provide increased knowledge of how the relationship between auditors and business executives can affect the independence of the auditor and the perceived audit quality. Furthermore, also how the auditor's statements of going concern was affected by independence. Previous research formed the semi-structured interviews conducted with auditors and business executives. The study included responses from seven respondents, three of whom are auditors and four whom are business executives. The study revealed that the auditor's independence, in appearance, was affected in some of the critical situations, but is not questioned in owner managed businesses, based upon that they do not have any external stakeholders of essential importance. The auditor's independence, in fact, is not threatened in any of the critical situations as there is no conflict of interest between shareholders and business executives. Furthermore, the study also distinguished that both consulting services and long-term customer relationships improved the perceived audit quality. This because that business executives gained a greater trust in the auditor of the company and that this reduces the information asymmetry between the company and the auditor. On this basis, this also leads to that the statements of going concerns did not became affected since the auditor's independence was maintained in all situations.

Beröm som motivation inom vården: en kvalitativ studie2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The public sector in Sweden comprises businesses within the municipality, state and county councils. Of all employed people in the country, one third works in the public sector. Major challenges are reported in healthcare where poor working conditions, low salaries and a lack of motivation are common issues. This study has the purpose of creating a better understanding and knowledge of how praise affects the motivation of the employees in the healthcare. We also investigated the form of praise that motivates the employees and consequently contributes to higher motivation. Previous research on motivation has to a greater extent focused on the private sector, hence there is a need for more empirical studies of praise in the public sector. The study is based on an empirical study on motivation and a qualitative research approach where we have chosen to do six semi-structured qualitative interviews with employees in healthcare. These interviews were later transcribed, and the data was used for the empirical work. Much of the empirical data showed that praise affects motivation differently depending on the recipient's characteristics, which were also in line with the theoretical basis of the study. The study also shows that most employees have a greater desire to receive praise individually rather than other alternatives, even though some felt that receiving praise in front of others was also important. These differences can be explained with Maslow's hierarchy of needs - depending on how the employee’s needs have been met. Those who have their basic needs met (step 1) and feel safe (step 2) and feel social belonging (step 3) need for self-esteem (step 4) are more receptive to praise. The study shows that praise as motivation in healthcare is used to a lesser extent than desired. It is also desirable for employees to receive praise and there are virtually only positive effects except if the praise is given to an individual in front of a collective group. Then it can contribute to negative effects in the form of jealousy or negative feelings

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Previous research shows that people with a high level of workaholism have a higher level of self-percieved stress than people with a high level of workengagement (Schaufeli, Shimazu & Taris, 2009). The aim of this study was therefore to investigate if stress can be predicted by workaholism and workengagement but also if similiar results from previous research could be found in the matter of correlations between stress and workaholism and correlations between stress and workengagement. The following questions were formulated: Can stress be predicted by workaholism and workengagement? How does stress correlate with workaholism? How does stress correlate with workengagement? The participants of this study were 102 people whereof 59 women and 43 men. The age range was between 19 to 64 years with a mean (M) of 39 years. Three well-established questionnaries were used to measure workaholism (DUWAS-10), workengagement (UWES) and stress (PSS-10). The results showed that stress can be predicted by workaholism and work engagement, the percentage of overlap of common variance showed 16.9%. The results also showed that stress has a positive correlation with workaholism and stress are associated negatively with workengagement, which are largely in line with previous research.

Distributed Checkpointing with Docker Containers in High Performance Computing2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Lightweight container virtualization has gained widespread adoption in recent years after updates to namespace and cgroups features in the Linux kernel. At the same time the Industrial High Performance community suffers from expensive licensing costs that could be managed with virtualization. To demonstrate that Docker could be used for suspending distributed containers with parallel processes, experiments were designed to find out if the experimental checkpoint feature is ready for this community. We run the well-known NAS Parallel Benchmark (NPB) inside containers spread over two systems under test to prove this concept. Then, pausing containers and unpausing them in different sequence orders we were able resume the benchmark. After that, we further demonstrate that if you carefully consider the order in which you Checkpoint/Restore containers, then the checkpoint feature is also able to resume the benchmark successfully. Finally, the concept of restoring distributed containers, running the benchmark, on a different system from where it started was proven to be working with a high success rate. Our tests demonstrate the performance, possibilities and flexibilities of Dockers future in the industrial HPC community. This might very well tip the community over to running their simulations and virtual engineering-applications inside containers instead of running them on native hardware.

    Abstract [en]

Palliative care treatment is a common phenomenon to many registered nurses. When caring for a patient palliatively, the nurse should also care for the ones closest to the dying patient. Previous studies have shown that nurses are uncertain on how to support these relatives and that some nurses even see them as a burden. The aim of this study was to describe nurses’ views on how they can support the ones closest to the patients that need palliative care. The method used is a literature study, aiming at contributing to evidence based care grounded in analysis of qualitative research. Two electronic databases, Cinahl and Pubmed, were used for searches. Inclusion criteria were: studies should be written in the English language, no older than ten years, qualitative, presenting data in palliative care setting for adult patients only, and written from a registered nurse’s perspective. Eleven studies were included. Four themes emerged on how nurses give support: Facilitate presence, Involve the ones closest to the patient, Care for the ones closest to the patient and Meet informational needs. The conclusion is that the nurse should care for the ones closest to the patient as unique human beings and strive to fulfil individual nursing needs.

Det svenska prekariatet. Väljarnas medvetna val, eller påtvingad frihet?: Hur våra folkvalda talar om samhället, och därmed skapar det.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund:

Method to off-line program robotized metal deposition2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report is a ten credit degree project and is aimed at technically skilful personnel at Volvo Aero Corporation and at the University West. The goal of the project is to create a robot program that can manufacture a part by Metal Deposition from a 3-D CAD model (Unigraphics) via a CAM module and a CAR program (IGRIP) to an ABB robot. Metal Deposition is a method to build new parts, add material to an existing part and repair components that have been damaged in earlier processes. The method can be used with different kinds of welding with powder or welding wire as the additive material. Three reference geometries were used; two bosses and a circular sweep. UG/CAM is used to create the CLS (Cutter Location Source) data. Different milling operations are used to emulate welding. The program which imports the coordinates from the CLS data to IGRIP, as well as the export program, was written in GSL (Graphics Simulation Language). GSL is a Pascal-like programming language used to control the behaviour of simulation models. The import program reads linear movement coordinates line by line until the whole CLS file has been converted into IGRIP. UG/CAM should only use linear movement when using this program. If circular movements are used, a feature that converts those has to be added to the import program.

    Abstract [en]

With real world research as the theoretical framework, a study was conducted as an assignment by the HR-function at Parker Hannifin AB in Sweden. Bearing in mind that there have been ambiguities concerning the roles of managers and HR-staff in previous research and that the managers’ perceptions about the HR-function affects the role of the HR, this study was conducted. This study about perceptions and satisfaction concerning the working of an HR-function aimed to highlight possible differences in customer satisfaction amongst managers based on which unit they belonged to, level of managerial position, the time they have worked as managers in the organization, and the frequency of contact with the HR-department. Moreover, the study considered whether the opinions concerning areas of improvement have changed since the last conducted research. This research was conducted through an analysis of documents and a self-produced questionnaire which was sent to all managers within Parker in Sweden. The results indicated that the same areas of improvement-needs remains, that existing documents are inconsequent in relation to each other, and that several significant differences between managers’ perceptions emerged. The HR-departments along with the different documents should tentatively become more consistent so that their roles become clearer.

    Abstract [en]

Background: In society today, mental illness is a growing problem. Relatives of a person with mental illness are often adversely affected by the person's condition. Knowledge exists to help a person suffering from mental illness but not as much importance is attached to helping them handle the situation. As nurses, we must not only help the person with mental illness but also the relatives. What is missing is to recognize the needs of the relatives and gain a deeper understanding of how to better support and prevent ill-health.

Aim: The aim of the study is to illuminate the relatives to a person with mental illness and how they are affected

Method: This paper is a literature review founded on 12 articles with a qualitative approach based on Friberg's (2012) five-step method.

Results: Relatives living with a mentally ill person, carry a burden of guilt, shame and are faced with ignorance from family and society. This is enhanced by the lack of knowledge of relatives and stigmatization. Being available around the clock effects the relatives negatively such as their health, work and economics. Their future plans were limited, they had to re-priorities and adapt their lives to the mentally ill person. It was a burden for relatives and thoughts of suicide often came to mind.

Conclusion: The life and health of relatives became affected drastically, they needed more support and knowledge from the health care services. The health care services must improve their individual support.

    Abstract [sv]

Background: The early relations are the most important relationship. The child is totally dependent of caring. A child being neglected during the early years suffers consequences for the rest of their life. Aim: The aim of this study was to find out about the promoting factors for mother and child attachment during the first year. Methods: A literature review was chosen for this study. The search of literature was carried out from the two databases Academic Search Elite and Cinahl. Nine articles were selected, studied and analysed by the authors. Results: The results of the study showed that one of the most important promoting factors for attachment between mother and child during the first year is the mother´s self-esteem. Other promotion factors are the support of the spouse, relatives and friends. The temperament of the child is important, an easy child makes the mother feel competent. A difficult child makes the mother feel incompetent and inadequate. The affirmation support from the nurse at the child welfare centre has a great importance for the mother`s self-esteem.

Kartläggning av interna transporter på Volvo Penta i Vara2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Volvo Penta is manufacturing boat engines and is located in the city of Vara, 100 kilometers northeast of Gothenburg. The company is a part of Volvo Group and has approximately 200 employees in Vara.

This thesis is based on mapping of internal traffic with trucks due to the factory has been rebuilt and the business has grown. The aim of the thesis is to give an understanding of how the current transport flows functions today and to present suggestions on how the flows can be streamlined. The target of the thesis is to identify and to map out the internal transport flows from incoming goods to different stock locations and also the transport flow between stock locations within the factory. The mapping also includes empty transports, transport of empty containers and waste transports.

The data for the mapping was collected by the help of three truck drivers. The drivers filled out a survey of their transport routs during five working days. The survey presented information about what sort of transport that has been performed and between which stock locations they drove. Compiled information shows examples of the proportions between empty transports, transport of empty containers and waste transports. The compiled information of the three drivers also shows the distance of each transport per day. In order to gain a greater understanding of the analyzed transport flow, interviews have been done with the drivers. Also a benchmarking was made at Nevs in Trollhättan to give an idea of how to improve material flows.

The result of the mapping shows that stock location and material are widely spread throughout different locations within the factory. Further the results also shows that the empty transports are common and often being performed over a long distance. Results also shows that some materials are stock positioned far away from their using points. Considering waste transport the results shows that long transports are needed.

In the future it is suggested that Volvo Penta in Vara changes the stock locations within the factory in order to reduce the number of material and empty transports. Further a new layout with a centralized stock location is suggested in order to shorten the transports and reduce the workload for the truck drivers. Other suggestions are to locate stock positions closer to their using source and to site waste stations closer to pick up points.

Vad driver de svenska småhuspriserna?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors affect the Swedish real estate prices of small house dwellings, and if so, how and to what extent. With the use of earlier studies, that coherently claims mortgage rate and household disposable income to be the most valuable factors to explain the Swedish real estate prices, this study will consider additional determinant factors with the respect to a stock-flow model. 1993-2013 time series data will be tested for unit roots and cointegration before its run in a regression as an "Error Correction Model", which considers both long- and short run equilibrium. The result confirms the short run rate and disposable income as two determinant key factors when it comes to explaining the long run Swedish housing prices, together with other factors such as GDP, household debt and unemployment rate. In the short run, the historical development of housing prices act as a key determinant, but disposable income, short term rate, GDP and household debt are also important explanatory factors. The study shows that the increased income, and the ability to increase household spending, will be reflected in the housing prices. A low loan rate will concurrently make it possible for more households than ever to loan at a market with an already very restricted housing supply

Belöningens betydelse för försäljning och service: en kvalitativ studie av balansen mellan bankens försäljning och god kundservice2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine how well organizational rewarding system can get the staff to increase their sales of products and services, while customers are offered service-excellence for their own good.

The study is related to reality through a qualitative research, in the shape of semi-structured in-depth interviews, were the employees' views of the reward system at Swedbank's telephone bank are examined. Respondents consisted of six advisors and one business manager.

Using a theoretical framework based on motivation theories of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, Herzberg's Two factor theory and Vroom's Expectations theory, the data obtained during in-depth interviews were processed and analyzed. Further, the 4P-model was used to analyze how well the organization exhibit customer service-excellence.

The result shows that it is mainly distributed internal, verbal reward to the workers, but that the sales statistics are the basis for a possible raise. All of the respondents stated that there are unclear directives from senior management regarding the goals; should the staff either increase the sales or reduce the queues. Employees consider that unclear directives create demotivation at work, when the focus on target setting constant varies. Furthermore, all respondents stated that colleagues encourage each other to sell better when they regularly receive reports regarding sales and efficiency.

In the interviews, it also became clear that the organization does not apply any reward for customer service-excellence, but reports from unsatisfied customers are followed up and investigated in some cases. However, business managers sometimes participate at client meetings through call screening, in order to develop staff in improved customer service.

The conclusion of the study is that the organization mainly applies reward of internal nature, where regular reports, considering sales and efficiency create competition among the staff. Their comparison with one another evokes motivation. Different directive considering goal achievement is a factor of demotivation among the respondents. There is no reward for service-excellence. There have been indications that customers are not satisfied with the bank's service, which is suggested to be based on that there is an imbalance between hard (structure and strategy) and soft factors (shared values and personal skills)

Fördelar och nackdelar med budget: Hur arbetar svenska börsnoterade bolag med budget2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

One purpose of budgeting is to allocate financial responsibility within organizations and can be a valuable management tool (Kullvén, 2009). A discussion of long duration, however, is that traditional budgeting should be complemented by other management tools. There is also an advocate for organizations to abandon traditional budgeting and instead work in accordance with the Beyond Budgeting (Neely, Bourne & Adams, 2003).

The purpose of this study is to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of classical Budgeting and Beyond Budgeting. The study was conducted in five listed organizations where interviews were conducted with key personnel.

    The study's research questions are:

How do listed companies work with budget, regarding planning, management and evaluation? How does listed companies relate to criticism against the traditional budget?

Four of the five organizations that participated in the study use budgets. They consider that the criticism of the budget is not relevant to their business. All four companies use budgets or forecasts as they prefer to call it, as a tool for planning, management and monitoring. In other words, all four companies follow the classic basic idea of budgeting. None of these four companies have been thinking about abandoning budgeting, but instead works to develop and streamline its budgeting work and adapting budgeting to its own operations and to the world around us changes.

The fifth organization which is working with Beyond Budgeting, believes that the people working close to the customers know the market best and should make the decisions. The organization believes that budgeting is not in accordance with their values. This is because they want to have a flat organization with a minimum of control. Furthermore, the organization working with Beyond Budgeting means that each employee is aware of the need of economizing and does not want to get as much of the "budget pie" as possible.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Approximately 300 children are affected by cancer each year in Sweden, however the prognosis has been significantly improved. The disease isn't only affecting the child but even the family of the child and therefore, a family focused care should be applied. The disease creates a suffering for the entire family and the nurse then has the task of reducing that suffering.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to highlight family experiences of having a child with cancer.

Method: In this literature study ten qualitative articles, that shed light on the chosen subject, have been processed. The articles were analyzed using Friberg's five-step model.

Results: The analysis resulted in four themes and 13 sub-themes. The four themes were; chaos and uncertainty, change of relationships within the family, change of everyday life and change of attitude towards life. The cancer diagnosis in the child affected everyone in the family, which caused a change in the everyday life for all members. The pursuit for information was constant among these families. Their everyday lives became chaotic when a whole series of emotions tested their relationships. The family members had a change of perspective of life, and priorities were redirected after the child’s diagnosis.

Conclusion: The families face many emotional difficulties in connection with the child being diagnosed with cancer, and they need the support from nurses to handle these difficulties. The need for information is great among these families and therefore nurses need to be able to provide the information that families need to reduce their suffering.
