Welding procedures for fatigue life improvement of the weld toe2016In: Welding in the World, ISSN 0043-2288, E-ISSN 1878-6669, Vol. 60, no 3, p. 573-580Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents the results of an experimental study of gas metal arc welded, GMAW, cruciform joints made of common construction steel S355. The hypothesis is that smooth undercuts in as welded conditions can give enhanced fatigue properties similarly as post treated welds. Undercuts are generally seen as a defect or imperfection. Welders try to avoid these and repair them when they occur, which result in increased production lead time. Post weld improvement methods i.e. grinding or high-frequency-impact treatment (HFMI) as fatigue-enhancing post-treatment methods enforce amongst other effects a certain smooth undercut-shaped groove in the treated weld toe region. The obtained shallower weld toe transition reduces the geometrical notch effect and increases fatigue strength. This paper presents a study whereas welded specimens with a weld toe geometry similar to what is obtained by weld toe grinding or HFMI-treatment, has been produced, fatigue tested and analyzed. The improvement of the fatigue strength is comparable to post-weld treated specimens. It has proven to be an efficient way to achieve high-quality welds without introducing any additional operations in production, thus enabling weight reduction using cost-effective methods.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Lost in Simplification: A comparative study of Attitude in five plain English news articles and their source texts2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Attitude refers to one of the three subsystems of Appraisal and is a tool used by linguists to map feelings. This paper studies five plain English news articles and their source texts, in order to establish whether and how there are differences in terms of Attitude between the plain English texts and their source texts, and whether the two text categories belong to different evaluative keys, i.e. different voices. Following Martin and White (2005), the ten texts were analysed manually and the results presented in tables and commented on. The results show that a plain English text frequently has its own emphasis and message, that there is proportionally more authorial-sourced Attitude in the plain English texts, but that all the texts belong to the same evaluative key.

    Abstract [en]

Every year approximately 8,000 women undergo a hysterectomy. A hysterectomy alleviate the pathogenic problem but can itself create a new suffering where the sexuality and ability to get pregnant can be affected. To meet the requirements of promoting health and alleviate suffering the nurse need greater understanding of women’s experiences and needs after a hysterectomy. The aim of this study was to describe the fertile women’s experiences due to a hysterectomy. In this study eight qualitative articles were analysed by the five-step method described by Friberg (2012). Three main categories were described: the need to feel acknowledged and respected, free from symptoms but not without pains and body changes leads to new experiences.Women perceive that they do not get enough information and feel that they may not be involved in decisions regarding the hysterectomy. Regardless of whether the woman has undergone a planned or an emergency hysterectomy, there are those who are suffering great loss of their womb. They lack the possibility of pregnancy and doubt whether the surgery was the right thing to do. It is important that nurses’ inform the patient about what a hysterectomy is. The nurses’ must also inform about how the surgery is performed and how it can affect women physically and mentally regardless if it is a planned or an emergency hysterectomy. Nurses’ must stop being ashamed of talking about sexuality and gain courage to answer the women’s questions that they may have.

En studie om studenters upplevda kontrollokus och akademiska motivation i relation till arbetslivserfarenhet och ålder2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose was to examine differences between different groups of students disaggregated by years of work experience and age. The reason was to examine if the work experience and age had any significance for students' internal motivation, external motivation, amotivation and locus of control. Correlations between the above variables were also examined. In the cross-sectional study 71 students participated (60 women and 11 men) from a college in central Sweden with an age range of 19-47 years. The survey was based on; The Academic Motivation Scale (AMS- C28) for college students (Ryan & Deci, 2000) and the Academic locus of control scale for college students (ALC) (Trice, 2013). A statistically significant difference was found between one group of students who were 19-22 years old and a student group that was 26 years and older on locus of control, where the results showed that the oldest group experienced more external locus of control than the younger group. Statistically significant differences were also found among a group of students who had between 0-2 years of work experience and a student group that had more than 4 years of work experience on locus of control in which the students who had more work experience experienced more external locus of control than the group that had less work experience. Work experience and age showed a positive statistically significant relationship as well as between locus of control and age. Locus of control and work experience showed a weak positive statistically significant relationship and there was also a weak negative correlation between locus of control and external motivation. A positive significant correlation was shown between internal motivation and external motivation. The results showed no differences or relationships regarding work experience and motivation. Additional characteristics are essential to create an overall picture to the work practices relevant to students

Users experience of Flash Glucose Monitoring2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: For individuals with diabetes it is important to be able to monitor their blood glucose in a safe and effective way. This has traditionally been done with Self-measurement of blood glucose. In the last decade Continuous Glucose Monitoring has become available and in 2014 a Flash Glucose monitor (FGM) came onto the market. To be able to help each individual find the best possible system for themselves the diabetes nurse has to be familiar with all systems.

Aim: The aim of this study was to explore user's experience of a Flash Glucose Monitor.

Method: This was a quantitative study done in 2 outpatient clinics in western Sweden during 2015. Individuals with type 1 diabetes answered a questionnaire (min0-max10) about their experience after using a Flash Glucose Monitor for 2 weeks.

Results: Mean age was 47.5 years (SD 15.9) and 40% were women. The user experience was positive, with mean for the questions ranging from 8.08-9.79 (SD 0.6-2.5). There was a significant positive correlation to increasing age for 8 of the questions. Only statistical difference between genders was that women found the FGM disturbed more in their daily life.

Conclusion: The FGM can be considered for individuals with type 1 diabetes and it is important to also include this when informing older individuals of the possible options for measurement of blood glucose.

Barriers for industrial implementation of in-process monitoring of weld penetration for quality control2017In: The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, ISSN 0268-3768, E-ISSN 1433-3015, Vol. 91, no 5-8, p. 2427-2434Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The research conducted sheds a light on the question why robust in-process monitoring and adaptive control are not fully implemented in the welding industry. In the research project FaRoMonitA, the possibilities to monitor the weld quality during welding have been investigated. Research conducted in this area has merely focused on technical issues investigated in a laboratory environment. To advance the research front and release some barriers related to industrial acceptance, the studies conducted in this paper have been both quantitative and qualitative in form of experiments combined with an interview study. The quality property weld penetration depth was chosen for in-process monitoring to evaluate the industrial relevance and applicability. A guaranteed weld penetration depth is critical for companies producing parts influenced by fatigue. The parts studied were fillet welds produced by gas metal arc welding. The experiments show that there is a relationship between final penetration depth and monitored arc voltage signals and images captured by CMOS vision and infrared cameras during welding. There are still technical issues to be solved to reach a robust solution. The interview study indicates that soft issues, like competence and financial aspects, are just as critical.

Selection of Evaluation Methods for New Weld Demands: Pitfalls and Possible Solutions2012In: NDT in Service of Society, in Safety Assurance, Quality Control and Condition Monitoring: The 18th World Conference on Nondestructive Testing, WCNDT-2012 / [ed] M. Johannes, AOSIS, 2012, p. 1-10Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

New demands often create a need for new evaluation methods. However, there are several pitfalls when choosing those methods that can endanger the expected benefits.

This study shows examples from the implementation of a new welding standard at several sites in the same company. It focuses on possible pitfalls as well as probable causes and potential solutions with a push- and pull-approach. The examples cover the problems with unclear or too simplified demands, lack of evaluation method and incapable evaluation methods.

The ability to handle and prevent the described issues is a prerequisite in order to be able to develop the organisation in means of quality assurance for light weight structures.

    Abstract [en]

Workplace training is considered being of great importance for developing the skills of the most important resource of the organization – the staff. The higher organizational capacity, the greater competitiveness in the market. The aim of all workplace training is that the knowledge and skills learned will transfer to the work. Evaluations of courses are often carried out but fewer resources are devoted to follow-up on the results and effects of training. Previous research shows several factors that affect the training transfer, such as perceived organizational support, work motivation before training, self-efficacy and work climate. The aim of the study was to investigate customer service employees' perceived results and/or effects of training on their workmanship and their perception of themselves. The effects of perceived organizational support on the results and effects were also explored. The study was conducted in a customer service center in a transport company in Gothenburg, Sweden. Employees who had passed a customer care course were asked to participate in the study. Five employees chose to participate. 1Semi-structured interviews were conducted and transcribed literally. The data was analyzed with a thematic analysis and five themes were identified. These were: changed thinking , common language, personal development, training and follow-up and daring to evolve. The participants of the study perceived organizational support such as feedback and discussion after training as important for the training transfer. Therefore one conclusion of the study was that focus should be placed on this kind of organizational support. For future research focus could be placed on the importance of the individual factors for training transfer.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Digital technologies are increasingly implemented in Swedish schools, which impact on education in the contemporary classroom. Screen-based practice opens up for new forms and multiplicity of representations, taking into account that language in a globalized society is more than reading and writing skills. This paper presents a case study of technology-mediated instruction at the primary-school level including an analysis of the designed task and how the teacher orchestrated the digital resources during three introductory classes. The aim was also to explore the pupils’ redesigning of advertising films based on teacher’s instructions and available digital resources. Sequences of a learning trajectory were video recorded and analysed from a multimodal perspective with a focus on the designed task and the processes of how pupils orchestrate meaning through their selection and configuration of available designs. The findings show a distinction between the selection of design elements in the teacher’s orchestration of the laptop resources during instruction and the pupils’ redesigning of the task. Pupils’ work developed from the linguistic design provided by the teacher towards visual design and the use of images as the central mode of expression in the process of creating advertising films. The findings also indicate a lack of orientation towards subject content due to the teacher’s primary focus on introducing the software.

Similar products different processes: Exploring the orchestration of digital resources in a primary school project2014In: Computers and education, ISSN 0360-1315, E-ISSN 1873-782X, Vol. 81, p. 247-258Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Today, teachers and pupils are interacting with digital devices during different types of activities in theclassroom context. During such activities, dialogic interaction has a particular value as a pedagogicalpractice that helps to develop pupils' understanding. This study has explored the question: In what waysdo digital resources support dialogic and synergistic interaction? In order to explore primary schoolpupils' interaction within group activity and how they make use of the features of the laptops, theempirical material was collected through video recordings and further analysed with the interactivityanalysis framework (IAF) developed by Beauchamp and Kennewell (2010). The findings show thatalthough the products produced by the different groups of pupils were similar in a technological way (i.e.the pupils used the same modes of expression), the patterns of interaction during the group processesvaried. Two out of six groups used the digital resource as an 'object of interaction', where the tool had amore passive role during the group collaboration. The other four groups used the ICT resource as a 'toolfor interaction', where the resource became more of an interaction partner during the meaning-makingprocesses, which opened up opportunities for learning. The findings also indicate that the interplay inthese four groups between the group members and the laptop features seems to have developed thepupils' understanding of ICT resources as well as their understanding of the subject content during thegroup work. Synergistic interaction with ICT was rather rare but was observed in one of the groups

Förbättrings och layout förslag för pakethanteringen hos SKF Logistics Services Sweden2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The expected outcome of this thesis is to identify process involving manual handling of packet at SKF Logistics Services Sweden. As well developing proposals for changes in the process and layout suggestions for floor 200. These proposals are based in lean and ergonomics to find wastes in the process and improve the current working environment that today includes of heavy lifting for personnel.

If the proposals are implemented they will provide an improved flow primarily by the takt-error which today is between picking and packing of orders. Ergonomics will also be improved by heavy lifting will be minimized. As well will work stations be redesigned with ergonomic models from the Swedish work Environment Authority. This will improve the working environment in the process. Some of the suggestions given in this thesis is not entirely rooted in the organization but are included to show how to save and the elimination of non -value adding activities that can be done by changing the surrounding processes. This will affect more departments than SKF Logistics Services Sweden and more extensive pre-study must be conducted before these proposals can be implemented

    Abstract [en]

Today's industry is subject to fierce competition. This requires constant business development and continuous increment in product variety to meet customer requirements. Management Tools such as Lean Production, which focuses on a continuous reduction of waste in all parts of the company, plays a key role in today's industry. In order to reconcile the continual improvement of the organization's well-being requires a structured approach in the form of organized improvements.  The work carried out at Swegon AB in Kvänum identifies possible changes concerning the wrapping process in efficiency improvement and resource saving purposes. The company produces air handling units and fans for indoor use. The products are used in stadiums, hotels, hospitals, airports, universities and private housing.  Today’s wrapping process is perceived as ineffective. The company sees potential for improvement in transportation cuts, in minimizing physical and business management steps and thus reduce the need for storage space and buffers. Along with a restructuring, that focuses on improving material flow and layouts, large parts of the production is changed, from a function-oriented to an increasingly process-oriented structure. If the proposed changes are to be implemented this most likely occurs in conjunction with the rebuilding.  The work was initiated by a comprehensive survey of today's wrapping process. The empirical collection began through interviews, observations and process mapping. The survey was completed by applying the fishbone diagram, where the root causes of the identified problems were structured.  Continuous literature studies were conducted to substantiate the used methods. The theory deals primarily with lean production with focus on waste and standardization. Suggestions for improvement were generated continuously in close cooperation with technicians and production staff. The focus was on reducing non-essential steps in the process. This work results in four proposed changes: scanning, layout changes and kitting. These changes give rise to a reduced need of resources and an increased quality towards customers. Additionally, the proposals improve opportunities for standardization of the process in the future. Date

Squat or knäböj?: A study of Swedish-English Code-switching in Fitness Blogs2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates code-switching from Swedish to English in fitness blog posts through a study of fourteen popular Swedish fitness blogs. By manually reading and analyzing 210 blog posts, I answered the questions of what, where and why bloggers code-switched. The code-switching constituents were divided into inter-sentential and intra-sentential code-switching. Further, single words were placed in groups of lexical categories and analyzed in terms of semantics. The results showed that intra-sentential code-switching was most common and that single nouns were switched to the highest extent. The majority of switched words were inflected by Swedish or English inflectional suffixes accordingly with suggested constraints, but one divergent example was found.

The eight most frequently switched words were all connected to fitness, except for one. Furthermore, there were tendencies towards a more frequent use of some English fitnessrelated words, e.g., squat, and indications of a correlation between commonly switched words and the Crossfit concept. Likely reasons for bloggers to code-switch were to create positive affiliation, or to convey an identical semantic message, which sometimes may be difficult when there is a lack of an equivalent Swedish word.

    Abstract [sv]

Art therapy during radiotherapy: A five-year follow-up study with women diagnosed with breast cancer2014In: The arts in psychotherapy, ISSN 0197-4556, E-ISSN 1873-5878, Vol. 41, no 1, p. 36-40Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Follow-up studies on art therapy are lacking. In a randomised art therapy intervention study from 2001 to 2004 with women with breast cancer, results showed that patients benefitted from participating in art therapy for up to four months after the intervention. The aim of this study was to describe the coping resources and quality of life amongst women treated for breast cancer five to seven years after participating in individual art therapy during radiotherapy as compared to a control group. In 2009, thirty-seven women, 18 from the intervention group and 19 from the control group, answered questionnaires about their coping resources and quality of life. The results showed no significant difference between the groups regarding their coping resources or quality of life, except for an unexpected significantly lower score in the domain ’Social relations’ in the study group as compared to baseline, at the time of the follow up. However, our study from 2001 to 2004 supports various positive effects of art therapy within six months of participation as compared to a control group. Consequently, attending art therapy during the treatment period for breast cancer can be of great importance to support health, coping and quality of life in a short-term perspective. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Satire and Social Criticism in C. S. Lewis' That Hideous Strength2012Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The essay at hand is a New Historicist reading of C. S. Lewis’ dystopian fantasy novel That Hideous Strength. According to New Historicist theory it is informed by many disciplines, namely, philosophy, history, literary theory, theology, social science, and psychology, and it attempts to lessen injustices of race and class. The essay examines how satire operates in the novel, focusing on its societal targets: totalitarianism, laboratory animals, and education. Lewis’ philosophical idea expressed in his “The Abolition of Man” – that a society that averts from what he calls universal, timeless, objective values will eventually lead to a loss of that which is truly humane – is a main theme of the novel as well as for this essay. Another, complementary, main theme is that a cultivation of the heart is necessary for individuals of society since childhood if society is going to stay humane.

Framgångsrika ledarskapsstrategier i en organisationsförändring: Påverkan ur ett hälsoperspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Organizational changes today are unavoidable and a must for organizations to follow competitors, the outside world, globalization and increased demand international. Organizations need to evolve and follow the changes that take place in the market, in from of economic, technological and to changing business conditions. When it comes to organizationalchange processes, there is a negative mark on the definition. Of the results, it has been shown that lack of planning, analysis and communication to some extent are decisive factors if an organizational change is considered successful or not. When choosing whether a certain leadership or leadership strategy affects organizational change, significant factors have emerged, there is not only one leadershipstyle that is successful. Instead, it is important that leaders and managers find their unique ability and adapt it to their own leadership. It's about showing direction, vision and goals. To inspire and motivate their employees to both find and develop their potential and trust in the organization. The fact that there is a functioning work environment that results in the entire organization experiencing meaningfulness and a sense of context brings positive health aspects to the staff and a possible successful path towards a successful change process.

    Abstract [sv]

Who Cares and Who Pays?: The Stakeholders of Maritime Human Factors2009In: Human Factors in Ship Design & Operation: London, September 25-26, 2009, London: Royal Institute of Naval Architects , 2009, p. 69-76Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims at identifying the key stakeholders in maritime human factors and analyse their interest in, and power to influence the human factors issues. A stakeholder analysis is done and a model displays eight stakeholders from a vessel lifecycle perspective. It is concluded that the interest and the power to influence is much differentiated, largely due to the nature of shipping. An increased public interest in environmental, economic and socio-political sustainability has affected the environmental work in the industry and it is believed that pressure from consumers will lead to increased demands on shipping. It is further concluded that well operated shipping contribute to greater overall efficiency and economy and should offset higher unit freight costs resulting by the use of better maintained and managed ships.

    Abstract [sv]

Modelling and characterization of nonlinearities in a tuned mass damper-impulse hammer versus shaker excitation2016In: Proceedings of ISMA 2016 - International Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering and USD2016 - International Conference on Uncertainty in Structural Dynamics / [ed] Sas P.,Moens D.,van de Walle A., KU Leuven, Departement Werktuigkunde , 2016, p. 3711-3719Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The rubber springs of a tuned mass damper (TMD) exhibit both nonlinear stiffness and damping, which complicates measurements of the frequency response function (FRF) of the device. In this paper we model and compare the frequency responses measured with both impulse hammer excitation and a shaker base excitation method. Since the impulse response will spend only a short time in the nonlinear regime, a reasonable assumption is that the nonlinearities will be less apparent and more difficult to determine. The results show that this is not the case and that both methods yield similar nonlinear parameters. By comparing responses at different excitation levels with appropriate nonlinear models, the nonlinearities can be determined. The results indicate that these approximations of the nonlinear effects are able to describe the dynamic behaviour of the TMD, and that the nonlinear properties of the material differ somewhat in the two measurement situations.

This paper contributes with a model for evaluating IT supported workplace training (e-training). Since the problem domain of e-training is in the intersection of work, learning and IT, evaluating e-training is complex with multiple stakeholders. Venable et al (2012) provide a framework for how to choose evaluation strategy and method in design science research. This framework is applied to a desing science research project aiming for a design framework for developing e-training systems. A model based on the framework by Venable et al. (2012) and the design science research case is then suggested.

Design for e-training2017Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about designing technology that supports and enhances learning in and for the workplace. This is realized through an e-training system of web lectures. Designing e-training means designing for interaction in a user friendly way while accommodating for the pedagogical and instructional strategies that are inherent in learning systems. The objective of this thesis is to inform how technology can be designed to support workplace training by acknowledging the context demands of every day work. The context for this thesis is the government authority in Sweden called the county administration. The research in this thesis follows the approach of design science research and design principles for e-training through web lectures emerged in collaboration with members of the county administration through four design cycles of problem awareness: conceptual suggestion, system development, and evaluation. The perspective on learning adopts that of socio-cultural learning since it acknowledges the importance of context by stressing the relationship between learning and the context in which the learning occurs. A framework called authentic e-learning with nine core design principles was chosen as a kernel theory. The first version of the web lecture application was based on the unchanged design principles of authentic e-learning. The design principles were then evaluated in the context of a work place and after four design cycles some of the original design principles was still unaltered, some was adapted to the conditions of work place learning and new principles emerged from the evaluation process. The thesis concludes with eight design principles for e-training through web lectures.

E-learning use patterns in the workplace: Web logs from interaction with a web based lecture2012In: International Journal of Advanced Corporate Learning, ISSN 1867-5565, E-ISSN 1867-5565, Vol. 5, no 4, p. 4-8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

When designing for e-learning the objective is todesign for learning i.e. the technology supporting thelearning activity should aid and support the learningprocess and be an arena where learning is likely to occur. Toobtain this when designing e-learning for the workplace theauthor argue that it is important to have knowledge on howusers actually access and use e-learning systems. In order togain this knowledge web logs from a web lecture developedfor a Scandinavian public body has been analyzed. During aperiod of two and a half months 15 learners visited the weblecture 74 times. The web lecture consisted of streamingvideo with exercises and additional links to resources on theWWW to provide an opportunity to investigate the topicfrom multiple perspectives. The web lecture tookapproximately one hour to finish. Using web usage miningfor the analysis seven groups or interaction patternsemerged: peaking, one go, partial order, partial unordered, single module, mixed modules, non-video modules.Furthermore the web logs paint a picture of the learningactivities being interrupted. This suggests that modulesneeds to be fine-grained (e.g. less than 8 minutes per videoclip) so learners’ do not need to waste time having to watchparts of a video clip while waiting for the part of interest toappear or having to fast forward. A clear and logicalstructure is also important to help the learner find their wayback accurately and fast.

Towards adapting authentic learning for formal workintegrated e-learning2009In: Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology, DESRIST '09, 2009, p. Aricle 29-Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This poster reports from the initial steps of formulating a prescriptive design theory to support the development of scholastic/formal work-integrated e-learning systems. For this purpose a framework for authentic learning, developed andevaluated in a school setting and the eight components of design theories by Gregor and Jones has been used to guide two elearning activities in a work setting. Adapting authentic learning to a formal work-integrated e-learning context calls for a simplification of the framework where some elements of authentic learning become peripheral whereas others become more central. Great effort is put into improving online education, focusing on how students learn and how teachers' can help the students' to be effective in that process. Recently the interest in using web mining techniques in e-learning environments (educational mining) for this purpose has increased. The efforts can be oriented towards assisting the students' learning process, the teachers' scaffolding efforts or the administrators' to make the web site more efficient. It is argued in this paper that educational mining also have great potential in deriving design guidelines for the e-learning environment and not only support the processes taking place after the system is developed and implemented.

    Abstract [en]

Preschool task in Sweden include the teaching of mathematics as a subject and as a way to develop children's skills and ability to apply mathematical thinking in different situations. This through an approach that, according to curriculum, should include different aesthetic activities and creative methods. In all training institutions for teachers, mathematics in preschool are taught in different ways - which means that the teaching about the aesthetic possibilities and mathematics in preschool varies. Our experience shows that many students express a negative self-image when it comes to being interested in mathematics, which in some way, even affect their conception of mathematics in preschool education and personal adjustment to accept "unusual" ways of learning mathematic. The study explore students' attitudes and beliefs about mathematics as a subject and how they use different aesthetic potentials in their own mathematics teaching in preschool, more specifically with puppet play as a method. What kind of attitudes do they express before their activities with the children? What kind of expression and conclusion presents when they describe their communication with children through aesthetic experiences? The study includes 70 students.Students will receive lessons on several aesthetic dimensions and the puppet as a mediating tool. They will choose a specific learning object to develop children's mathematical knowledge and experience, andthey will make their own robot, a rod puppet. The will plan their teaching before two-week practice in preschool. During and afterwards they will document, analyze and discuss their mathematical activities. The study will be conduct in February 2016 and analysis of collected data in March - April. The study results can help to develop and create teaching methods and content in how teachers can work with mathematics in a more inspiring and creative way. That means better approaches and conditions for children's mathematical education and development in preschool.

Electrocardiographic amplitudes: a new risk factor for sudden death in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.2010In: European Heart Journal, ISSN 0195-668X, E-ISSN 1522-9645, Vol. 31, no 4, p. 439-449Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIMS: Assessment of ECG-features as predictors of sudden death in adults with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).

    METHODS AND RESULTS: ECG-amplitude sums were measured in 44 normals, 34 athletes, a hospital-cohort of 87 HCM-patients, and 29 HCM-patients with sudden death or cardiac arrest (HCM-CA). HCM-patients with sudden death or cardiac arrest had substantially higher ECG-amplitudes than the HCM-cohort for limb-lead and 12-lead QRS-amplitude sums, and amplitude-duration products (P = 0.00003-P = 0.000002). Separation of HCM-CA from the HCM-cohort is obtained by limb-lead QRS-amplitude sum >or=7.7 mV (odds ratio 18.8, sensitivity 87%, negative predictive value (NPV) 94%, P < 0.0001), 12-lead amplitude-duration product >or=2.2 mV s (odds ratio 31.0, sensitivity 92%, NPV 97%, P < 0.0001), and limb-lead amplitude-duration product >or=0.70 mV s (odds ratio 31.5, sensitivity 93%, NPV 96%, P < 0.0001). Sensitivity in HCM-patients <40 years is 90, 100, and 100% for those ECG-variables, respectively. Qualitative analysis showed correlation with cardiac arrest for pathological T-wave-inversion (P = 0.0003), ST-depression (P = 0.0010), and dominant S-wave in V(4) (P = 0.0048). A risk score is proposed; a score >or=6 gives a sensitivity of 85% but a higher positive predictive value than above measures. Optimal separation between HCM-CA <40 years and athletes is obtained by a risk score >or=6 (odds ratio 345, sensitivity 85%, specificity 100%, P < 0.0001).

CONCLUSION: Twelve-lead ECG is a powerful instrument for risk-stratification in HCM.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish healthcare systems have over the past decades experienced a major reorganization that involves reduction of costs and cuts due to the financial problems that the public health system faced. Healthcare was criticized because it was considered to be bureaucratic and inefficient (Funck, 2007). The solution to this problem was to focus on other measures rather than the economic measures, such as modernizing the healthcare instead of cutting down. Implementing a balanced scorecard in a public sector as a hospital, perceived as failures. This is due to several factors such as communication, knowledge and expected time are not taken into consideration when implementing the scorecard. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the balanced scorecard serves as an approach for controlling the hospital. The purpose of the study is to increase our knowledge and get better insight by examining the problems that may arise during the implementation of a balanced scorecard. The chosen method to this study is qualitative research with the influence of the inductive approach. Eight interviews were carried out at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital to get an overview about the selected topic. The chosen theory to the study is based on Kaplan and Norton's theories and other scientists as Funck, Assiri, Johnson and Atkinson. The study also applied research articles and literature in the theoretical framework. The study's research question is clarified as what types of problems can arise during the design and implementation of a balanced scorecard in hospitals. We have found that the balanced scorecard requires success factors such as communication, knowledge and learning, motivation, commitment, time management, a relevant and easy used scorecard and a clear vision, strategy and results for a successful implementation.

Patients’ daily life experiences five years after gastric bypass surgery – a qualitative study2016In: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 25, no 3-4, p. 322-331Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim and objective The objective was to explore and describe patients’ daily life experiences five years after gastric bypass surgery. Background Bariatric surgery markedly decreases body weight. Previous studies describe positive consequences, as well as physical, social and emotional challenges during the first few years after surgery. An understanding of how patients adjust to and cope with postsurgical changes in the long term is crucial to help them obtain a successful outcome after bariatric surgery. Method A qualitative method was employed. In-depth interviews with 10 men and women were conducted five years after bariatric surgery in a Norwegian hospital. Results One overarching theme – a multitude of daily life changes following bariatric surgery – was developed based on three main themes: relational aspects related to weight loss, the new body and changes in self-esteem. Six sub-themes are described. Conclusion Those who undergo gastric bypass surgery experience enormous changes in their daily lives. Their social lives, their relationship to their body and their self-esteem may be altered by the weight loss. Relevance to clinical practice The results of this study suggest directions for patient education, health staff education and peer education. A patient education programme focusing on changes in daily life experiences when undergoing gastric bypass surgery is suggested due to the changes experienced by the patients involved in this study.
