Metacognitive perspectives on the development of reading comprehension: a classroom study of literary text-talks2017In: Literacy, ISSN 1741-4350, E-ISSN 1741-4369, Vol. 51, no 1, p. 19-25Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The current study is a contribution to reading research dealing with tuition in reading comprehension and specifically with the issue of arranging tuition to support the development of metacognition. The empirical findings referred to in this study are from textual discussions of works of fiction in grades 6 and 7. The specific focus of the study is the correlation between the linguistic strategies used by the teacher and the pupils' opportunities to develop metacognitive perspectives as a consequence of these strategies. The study shows how the teachers, by use of a series of linguistic strategies, can offer pupils support in order to (1) identify and visualise the premises of their personal queries; (2) observe and verbalise their processes of interpretation together with their emotional reactions when reading; (3) survey, adjust and communicate their use of reading comprehension strategies and (4)recognise the text as an aesthetic construction and the interaction/transaction between texts and the reader.

    Abstract [en]

This article presents findings from a school project of which the focus has been to help pupils develop their reading abilities through text-talks about fiction. The article is the last in a study of four. The three preceding articles have fo- cused on how the teachers involved in the project have supported their pupils in order to help them improve their reading skills. The purpose of the study is to analyse and describe the abilities the pupils have developed in relation to the support they have been given during their education. The empirical findings referred to in the study are from text-talks in grade 9. The reading skills have been measured through analysis of video recordings of text talks among pupils discussing in small groups without a teacher present. The analytical tool used is the concept of text movability. The study displays to what extent the pupils have acquired strategies to read the lines, between the lines and beyond them. Also, how a metalanguage can be applied to talk about texts and the processes of interpretation. The results give evidence of the connection between the teaching offered to the students and the abilities they have developed.

Enhanced feminine sexual behavior and infertility in female rats prenatally treated with an antiestrogen2003In: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, ISSN 0036-5564, E-ISSN 1467-9450, Vol. 44, no 3, p. 251-6Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

An attempt to elucidate the possible role of prenatal estrogen on the development of feminine sexual behavior and reproductive function was made by treating females with the antiestrogen CI628 prenatally on days 13-19. Control females were prenatally treated with saline or remained untreated. The animals were delivered by caesarian section on day 22 of pregnancy and placed with foster mothers whose newborn pups had been previously removed. Intact peripubertal females in each treatment group were observed for several reproductive measures, including the capacity to become pregnant. Other females were ovariectomized in adulthood and treated with estradiol benzoate (EB) (1, 1.5, 2 or 4 micro g/rat) and 0.5 mg progesterone and tested for receptivity, proceptivity and sexual partner preference. Two weeks after the completion of these tests, the females were injected daily for 7 days with 0.25 mg testosterone and tested for sexual partner preference and mounting behavior. The results obtained showed accelerated vaginal opening, and infertility in the antiestrogen-treated intact females and enhanced receptivity and proceptivity in response to 1 micro g EB in the antiestrogen ovariectomized females. Sexual partner preference and mounting behavior did not differ between groups. These results suggest an involvement of prenatal estrogen on the development of female reproductive function, but not on behavioral differentiation.

    Abstract [en]

In July of 2002 Knut Larsson celebrated his 80th birthday. He could by then have looked back at a long and distingusihed career in the field of biological psychology. His research on sexual behavior had contributed to a basic understanding of many behavioral, endocrine and neural phenomena associated with or underlying sexual activity. Instead of looking back at his past achievements, Knut has preferred to look forward, constantly trying to find ways to stimulate interest in his own field and in biological psychology in general. This issue is a humble contribution to the noble end of enhancing the standing of biological psychology, particularly in Scandinavia. Foremost, however, it is a homage to a man of outstanding vision and intellectual integrity: Knut Larsson.

    Abstract [en]

Background Swedish nurses are required by law to document nursing care. Studies have proved scarce in nursing documentation with regard to written language, the nursing process and the nurse´s caring perspective. Educating nurses in using the VIPS model have improved nursing documentation. Few studies have included nursing documentation of psychiatric care.

Aim The aim of this study was to describe nursing documentation within psychiatric care of inpatient settings.

Method A quantitative, retrospective descriptive research design was applied. A total of 60 nursing journals from a psychiatric department of six wards were studied. Data was audited using the Cat-ch-Ing audit instrument that comprises 22 questions reflecting various issues relating to the VIPS model and the nursing process. Measurements of quantity and quality were evaluated for each question using a 4-point scale.

Results The nursing documentation showed a better quantity and quality at the patients’ admission for care than the remaining documentation, long duration of hospital stay indicated better quantity of documented nursing diagnoses and nursing interventions, all of the wards showed a poorly quantitative documentation of status after admission for care as well as nursing care plans.

Conclusion The nursing documentation within psychiatric care of inpatient settings of one department showed an inadequate documentation of nursing both quantitatively and qualitatively. The nursing care of the patient was neither described nor evaluated.

Clinical implications The results suggest that strategies for improving nursing documentation will be needed in the future. In addition, further education in using the VIPS fully can be a means to enhance the nurses’ documentation.

To what extent does culture affect the multinational team in a French production company2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to find out what difficulties occurs between the partners in the multinational team belonging to the company French X. This research is deducted for the company as they want me to highlight the problems they have that are not yet discovered. After concluding what could be their problem within their multinational team it will be easier for them to face the issues and work more efficiently. I carried out five qualitative interviews with different managers from the team that responded to the issues they face. They are all from different countries, having different backgrounds, different mother tongues and experience of living in different cultures. What they have in common is working in the same business called the French X i.e. different locations and plants. I wanted to highlight their diverse or common opinion regarding how important they consider communication and relationship to be between their team to further discover what kind of problems they come to deal with. I wanted to focus on what each one of them had to say and their own experiences, after which I chose the concepts and theories based on their talk. It is important to make clear that this study is done by an inductive approach, which means I collected some of the data first and then a selection of the theory was made. I did a research (the interviews with the manager’s from the company) to find out what could be the problem in the company French X. After a few interviews I started to assume culture to be the issue within the manager’s virtual intercultural team. Therefore my main research question comes to be; to what extent does culture affect the multinational team in a French production company? Also two sub questions are presented; what kind of problems come to be the issue within the intercultural team in a French production company? How important do the managers in a French production consider relationship and communication to be? My thesis got a focus on culture and it affects upon intercultural teams and the globalization in general. Many famous authors which are presented in my work highlight this subject to be sufficient when working in a team like the French X. After completing all of the interviews and comparing the data to the theory I selected, I come to realize that culture was to some extent a problem within the team of French X. Still culture was not the only issue the manager’s had to deal with. Several aspects came to be important as well. A suggestion for the company is also done in the last section. I describe my own solutions to their difficulties I discovered they had

    Abstract [en]

It is well-known that the demands on products and deliveries increase, at the same time also on man and machine. The tough competition in the corporate world requires constant improvement in the business to survive. In the engineering industry, companies are forced to invest in new technology to achieve more efficient processing and to be at the forefront of technology progression. In order to maximize the operation of the equipment, a clear and long-term maintenance work is required by the employees. Preferably, they themselves have been involved in the development of the maintenance plan.

The purpose of the thesis work is to develop improvement suggestions for the machine department at Componenta AB Främmestad, which concerns the maintenance work of the company's CNC machines.

Literature studies were collected at an initial stage of the degree project in order to gain knowledge so that the writer's goals could be achieved: 1) Review Componenta Främmestad AB's structure of machine maintenance and how it is applied in reality. 2) Analyze which causes may be that they are not applied, and find a well-functioning maintenance plan for the company. Furthermore, the company's neutral situation was analyzed to assist with basic understanding of the problem.

Componenta AB Främestad was founded in 1953 and in 1991, the company became part of the Componenta group. The company makes machined, surface-treated and preassembled components for heavy trucks and off-road industry.

    Abstract [en]

Background: People with mental illness and substance abuse are in great need of care and treatment. To increase the chances of recovery, both diagnoses need to be identified. Mental illness and substance abuse are perceived as deviant in society and among caregivers, with the result that the person is not seeking care and likely to deteriorate in their health. The nurse is obliged to use his/hers understanding in a fair and unprejudiced way, and deal with the person with respect and understanding regardless of the disease. For nurses in the municipal health care responsibilities for people with comorbidity leads to a higher workload and stress. Previous research shows that nurses lack skills in psychiatric nursing, causing uncertainty in health care meeting. Aim: The purpose of the study is to describe nurses' experiences of people with mental illness and substance abuse in municipal health care.Method: A qualitative method with individual interviews were used. The sample consisted of seven nurses, three psychiatric nurses, a district nurse and three general nurses. Participants were six women and one man, between twenty-five and fifty-two years old. The collected material was analyzed by qualitative content analysis. Result: Three categories are presented in the outcome - Patient needs that are difficult to master, Conditions for a good care relationship and Organizational shortcomings create role confusion. These categories created a theme: Comorbidity - multifaceted and difficult to master. Conclusion: We need greater knowledge of psychiatry in the municipal health service. For this to happen, we need understanding from the top of the organization regarding the illuminated phenomenon and understanding of psychiatric nurses' skills. Further research on how the organization can be improved could contribute to greater understanding and thereby improve patient situation.

Microstructural response of various chromium carbide based coatings to erosion and nano impact testing2017In: Wear, ISSN 0043-1648, E-ISSN 1873-2577, Vol. 386-387, p. 72-79Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, we demonstrate the microstructure dependency of erosion behaviour of laser clad, detonation sprayed and atmospheric plasma sprayed chromium carbide based coatings. The final chromium carbide content in all the coatings was a strong function of rapid solidification rate associated with the processes. In the laser clad coating majority of the chromium carbides re-solidified while in the thermally sprayed coatings chromium carbide re-solidification was hindered to a large extent. Hence, the final chromium carbide content in the thermally sprayed coating decreased with increased extent of particle melting during spraying. Decarburisation and oxidation during thermal spraying lead to the formation of chromium carbides with lower carbon content and chromium oxide(s). Laser clad and detonation sprayed coatings, with higher chromium carbide content, showed lower erosion rates and exhibited fewer brittle erosion events. Embrittlement due to excessive dissolution of chromium carbides into the matrix and poor splat bonding were found to be the reasons for higher erosion rate of the plasma sprayed coating. Scanning electron microscopy and quantification of single erodent impact events clearly established ductile material removal in the laser clad and detonation sprayed coating and brittle material removal in the plasma sprayed coating as the dominant mechanism(s). A good agreement was found between solid particle erosion testing and nano impact testing results.

    Abstract [en]

Chromium carbide based metal matrix composite (MMC) coatings are ideally suited for high temperature erosive-corrosive applications. Laser cladding of such MMCs, with Inconel as the ductile matrix instead of the usual NiCr alloy, has been attempted in the present study. The relative hardness of the laser clad layers was observed to drop with increase in laser power. The reduction in hardness was attributed to retention of lower amounts of chromium carbides in the clad layer at higher laser powers. Use of chemically assisted scans with electron diffraction allowed extraction of effective micro-textural information on the coatings. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Morphology-Dependent Hardness of Cr7C3-Ni-Rich Alloy Composite vs Orientation Independent Hardness of Cr7C3 Primary Phase in a Laser Clad Microstructure2017In: Metallurgical and Materials Transactions. A, ISSN 1073-5623, E-ISSN 1543-1940, Vol. 48A, no 4, p. 1534-1539Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Microstructural evolution with superheating was studied in chromium carbide-nickel coatings deposited by laser cladding. At lower superheating, selective growth of aOE (c) 0001 > direction from the high density of Cr7C3 grains nucleated resulted in a columnar structure with (0001) texture. Increased superheating lead to the loss of columnar structure as well as the (0001) texture. The hexagonal Cr7C3 showed an unusual isotropic nanoindentation hardness evidently correlated with its low c/a ratio. However, the rod-like morphology of the carbide dendrites resulted in significant anisotropy in the hardness of the composite.

Room temperature and 600 °C erosion behaviour of various chromium carbide composite coatings2019In: Wear, ISSN 0043-1648, E-ISSN 1873-2577, Vol. 422-423, p. 44-53Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, the erosion behaviour of laser clad chromium carbide-Ni rich alloy composite coatings with a wide range of carbide contents at room temperature and 600 °C were investigated. The variation in carbide content of the coatings was due to dilution from the substrate and the high cooling rate in the laser cladding process preventing re-solidification of the molten carbides. Erosion rate was observed to be a function of carbide content alone and was significantly higher at 600 °C as compared to room temperature. Erosion wear ratio (E90/E30) was also dependent on carbide content but decreased at higher temperature and higher carbide contents. A comparison of erosion behaviour with detonation and plasma sprayed counterparts showed the superior performance of laser clad coatings at 600 °C. The poor erosion performance of the detonation and plasma sprayed coatings was due to weak splat bonding. Thick oxide layer formed on the steel substrate after pre-oxidation resulted in its poor erosion performance.

A Genetic algorithm with shuffle to solve the job shop scheduling problem2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Job shop scheduling problems are computationally complex combinatorial optimization problems. Genetic algorithms have been used in various forms and in combination with other algorithms to solve job shop scheduling problems. A partially flexible job shop with precedence constraints increases this complex behaviour. There are two main parts to optimizing a job shop, the routing and the scheduling. The objective here is to get consistent optimal makespan using a genetic algorithm. This paper firstly, presents a representation of the considered partially flexible job shop scheduling problem, which helps take into account the precedence constraints and reduce situations of deadlock. It starts with the genetic crossovers for routing and then a random shuffle technique is used for scheduling the problem. The computational results have shown that the algorithm performs well in terms of finding a consistent optimal schedule for the given problem.

It is estimated that 0.5% of the population is a problem drug-user worldwide and only one fifth of them receives care. Do they get the help they need when they want to leave the drug addiction? With the review of relevant literature, we aim to collect those factors that can help or prevent addicts to reach a successful rehabilitation. The litterateur shows that when a drug addict doesn't want help to leave the addiction she or he can't be forced. The social network and caregivers play an important part in the rehabilitation process. If patients accept the help, caregivers and the patients' social network can be those who may help them to a better life-quality.

The development and implementation of an educational model for Community Service Engineering: Work Integrated Learning and international interaction2016In: Engineering 4 Society 2016 Raising awareness for the societal role of engineering. Leuven, Belgium 15 - 16 September 2016: Proceedings, Leuven, 2016, p. 79-85Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes the educational model four partner countries have developed in the context of Community Service Engineering (CSE). CSE is a project co-funded by the European Commission within the Lifelong Learning Programme 2013-2016.All participating institutions start from real-life project work with technology students (EQF level 6 or 7). All partners underpin this project work with a taught programme and the mentoring of the students. All students create an online portfolio in which they illustrate both the process and the final result of their project. (International) interaction is stimulated in the project based course work in various stages and for various reasons. International interaction is also facilitated via the taught programme to touch hot topics and compare between country contexts. The paper sums up the four building blocks which form the educational model and are the stepping-stones to move forward the real-life project work and allow for (international) interaction with students and other stakeholders. In the next paragraphs the paper identifies the prerequisites, process and outcomes that made collaboration for Community Service Engineering possible on the level of institutions, teachers/professors and students. Here we also touch the importance of networking with partners in the field in the various countries. The CSE curriculum also offers new opportunities and perspectives for them. In the last two paragraphs the paper pays detailed attention to the role of the teacher/professor and the future plans partners have for the CSE curriculum. Here the concept of ally partners will be explained and a call to join the consortium will be launched.

Mångfald: hur organisationskultur kan påverka mångfaldsarbete2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Labor markets around Sweden is characterized by diversity because of increased globalization and immigration. Diversity forms an important future issue. Organizational culture permeates organizations and is behind all actions, beliefs and values of individuals in an organization. The purpose of the study is to examine how organizational culture can affect diversity. The study was conducted with the inspiration of a hermeneutic and a qualitative approach. We were inspired by a deductive approache when we were to find connections between the theory and the empirical data of the study. We conducted seven semi-structured interviews. The respondents consisted of two managers and five employees from a government entity, anonymous in the study. Diversity management has in recent years gained increased relevance for organizations (Podsiadlowski et al 2013). Organizational culture plays a significant role, for example in leadership initiatives as it affects all individuals and in turn these indivduals affect the leadership initiative's success (Schein, 1996). Organisations with an inclusive culture opens up to different perspectives and utilize the benefits of diversity (Barbos & Cabral-Cardoso, 2007; Scott et al, 2011). The results of the study showed that the studied organization works actively with diversity. However, these plans do not reach the employees of the studied department. The staff of the studied department perceives the diversity work in the department as vague. The unit has a homogeneity in the workforce such that employees have a somewhat similar background, work experience and education. The culture of the department is characterized by openness. The department is characterized by rules and procedures, and we believe this affects the culture. The culture is strong as the employees share a set of common beliefs and values. Based on theory and empirical data, we interpret that diversity efforts are partially integrated, but lacks an integration of diversity at a departmental level. Employees and managers are open to diversity. The existing culture we mean, however, makes it difficult to create an inclusive organizational culture and utilize the benefits this can bring to the department. We consider diversity and organizational culture as opposites, diversity value differences and organizational culture value similarities. We believe it is difficult to reconcile these two in the department. Existing culture outcompete the possibilities of an inclusive culture in the department

Adapting standardised teaching material to suitlocal learning conditionsManuscript (preprint) (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

Standards have become generic elements in welfare practices and are expected to facilitate procedures and secure a uniform service to all citizens. This study investigates the knowledge involved in making practical use of a standardized teaching material to meet a diversity of knowledge needs in an integration activity aiming to support newly arrived immigrants' participation in society.Through video observations, interviews and document studies, the sequential structuring of information is reorganized into narrative patterns that presuppose knowledge about how different pieces of information relate to one another, andhow they work together in relation to different cultural expressions. It is argued that the procedural knowledge and scope of action intrinsic in bridging between different boundaries is decisive for understanding the basic conditions necessary for how a standardized teaching material can support processes of meaning making in integration work.

Knowing at work: A study of professional knowledge in integration work directed to newly arrived immigrants2016Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Currently, new knowledge domains and professions emerge as a consequence of societal changes that transform that conditions for work and work integrated learning. Integration work directed to newly arrived immigrants is one example of such a new professional knowledge domain. In civic orientation, which is the empirical case in this study, quality, standardization and dialogue are explicit strategies that impact the planning, organization and decision-making in everyday work. The interest in this thesis concerns the professional knowledge that is developed in activities aiming to provide heterogeneous groups of immigrants an orientation in the Swedish society. By making activity systems the prime unit ofanalysis and scrutinizing the ways in which integration workers make use of a stipulated course material and interactions in a specific context, the aim is to contribute to the understanding of the pedagogical and communicative knowledge that is developed in practice. The analytical approach takes its point of departure in a socio-cultural perspective on workplace studies. Three separate studies have been carried out in which the empirical data consist of observations, interviews, video recordings, field notes and documents from various integration offices. The results show that different perspectives on knowledge and culture becomes relevant in local discourses on quality in integration work. What distinguishes the integration workers professional knowledge concern seeing and understanding the heterogeneity of immigrants' cultural backgrounds and bridging boundaries.Culture function as an organizing element in work that makes it possible to make distinctions and organize a contextually relevant content that can be elaborated together with the members in the groups. Such work imply transformation of procedures and it is shown that the integration workers develop their knowledge from specific situations to understand the significance of textually mediate dimeanings in other situations. Knowledge is developed as the integration workers move between different situations and activities. It is concluded that the meaning-making involved in bridging between different cultural contexts relies on extensive knowledge in and about the recognition of the other and of interactions based on equal grounds. Negotiating agreements with the members of the groups about how common possibilities and responsibilities can be understood is central for respecting heterogeneity in the process and is at the core of the integration workers professional knowledge. Considering the future development of integration work, cumulative structures are needed that recognize and support the development of the integration workers professional knowledge within as well as between organizations and other related fields of practice and in relation to higher education.

Dimensions and perspectives of quality in integration work2016Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Social work organizations are faced with rapid changes that increase demands on quality and quality assessment. Before deciding how to assess quality, it is necessary to define what quality means with regard to a specific activity.Defining what is meant by quality is especially important before assessing the quality of integration activities developed for new immigrants. To address these issues, this study focuses on the concept of quality with respect to the efforts made to support immigrant integration in Sweden, through an activity called civic orientation. The data consist of interviews, observations, and video recordings of personnel working in an integration office. The results show how quality is manifested: firstly, in organizational structures for supporting and developing practitioners' knowledge; secondly, in standardized methods and material, and thirdly, in recognizing and attending to individual differences andthe sense of cultural belonging in daily interactions. One conclusion is that the knowledge of the integration workers – seeing and understanding the heterogeneity of immigrants' cultural backgrounds and bridging boundaries – isvital to the quality of civic orientation. That knowledge is central to the future organization of integration work, but could become invisible with a one-sided emphasis on standardization in quality work.

Knowing in practice: the use of dialogue as a pedagogical method in integration work2015In: Nordic Journal of Migration Research, ISSN 1799-649X, E-ISSN 1799-649X, Vol. 5, no 4, p. 168-176Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study analyses dialogue as an aspect of professional knowledge when integration workers are orienting newly arrived immigrants about Swedish society and everyday life in an integration activity called civic orientation. The data consists of interviews with integration workers and observations of classes in Sweden. The results show that using dialogue involves knowing how to mobilise a contextual foundation for mediating between different experience-based meanings and how to re-contextualise information, which requires skilful handling of various knowledge sources. To bridge between standardised information and contextually relevant meanings is central in integration processes and here, dialogue could support future integration work.

A study in what motivates students in terms of project work in English2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Project work in L2 Learning is often designed to enable practice of various types of skills. These skills may be related to language learning as well as to other aspects such as social skills and critical thinking. Assignments related to project work usually meet the requirements of the Swedish Upper Secondary School Curriculum, which could be a reason why project work keeps gaining popularity in Swedish schools. Extremely scarce research has been made on the importance of project work and what influencing factors it has on students' motivation.

Hence, the aim of this study is to identify what factors in project work motivated a selected group of students during project-based learning. Four focus group interviews were conducted with eleven female students attending the natural science programme at two different schools in Västra Götaland, Sweden. Although all students were female, the study is not gender-based. The interview data was analyzed through a thematic analysis.

As a result, I have selected five themes: language, group work, critical thinking, topic and obtaining good grades. It was discovered that these themes are considered by the students to provide knowledge which is useful in real life and for the future. Thus, they strongly contribute to their motivation, given that the students hold high ambitions in terms of future studies and careers. It is apparent that the students are able to see the connection between project work in English and achieving their own personal goals. My suggestion is thus that L2 teachers should design project work in a way that allows students to work with elements in which they find authentic value.

Conversation Pattern Changes as Two Film Characters Grow Closer To Each Other: A study in politeness in relation to character development in a film trilogy2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze what politeness techniques are used in film trilogy Before Sunrise/Before Sunset/Before Midnight to represent changes in speech patterns as two individuals grow closer to each other. Do speech patterns change or remain the same as their relationship grows? The analysis focuses on positive and negative politeness including face-threatening acts. My hypotheses are that the film characters might be more careful to follow Politeness principles at the beginning of their acquaintance and that the amount of face-threatening acts may occur more frequently as the two grow closer to each other. My conclusion is that the film characters do try harder at the beginning of their acquaintance to follow Politeness principles. In the first film it seems that they are eager to protect the positive face of themselves as well as of each other. The amount of face-threatening acts increases gradually throughout the trilogy to reach their peak in the third film. In all three films, it seems that one of the characters appears more inclined than the other to avoid situations where face threats are likely to occur.

    Abstract [en]

Non-profit engagement has a strong foothold in Sweden and has a major impact on society's stability. Engaging non-profit is not always easy because no pay is paid, and other motivational factors are needed.

The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of what motivates non-profit engagement and what characterizes and motivates a non-profit leader in the rural area.

Data collection was done through six deep interviews and respondents gave a self-appreciated picture of how their engagement is, what motivates them and about leadership in non-profit contexts.

The conclusion in the study was that there are several motivational factors but some that are primary. Meaningful, solidarity and sense of responsibility are the main motivational factors for an non-profit engagement, but encouragement also gave a motivating effect. What the study also revealed was that a leader should guide the members by knowledge, fairness, inclusive and responsive, but also that the leader is at the same hierarchical level as all members of the organization. Motivation for a leader was to be surrounded with individuals who had the same ambition and motivation level that create more engagement.

    Abstract [en]

Background The care relationship is central for psychiatric nursing. People with a psychosis diagnosis encounter symptoms that result in difficulties for the interpersonal communication. Stigma and previous experiences of compulsory care are obstacles that hinder or complicate the patient's participation in their care. A person-centered caring relationship increases adherence and the patient's possibility to be a part of their recovery. Therefore it is important for the psychiatric nurse to gain a deeper understanding of what specific strategies and practices the nurse uses to enhance the potential of the care relationship and provide a person-centered care.

Aim The aim of the study is to describe the nurse´s experience of the care relationship with people who have a psychosis diagnosis.

Method The study was conducted at two outpatient facilitations in Sweden. Eight nurses were asked about their experiences of the care relationship during individual semi-structured interviews. The data was analyzed by using a qualitative content analysis.

Results The result was presented in three categories; Trust - essential for a supportive care relationship, Careful perception of the person's boundaries and conditions and Structural possibilities and limitations. The three categories consisted of six subcategories that emphasized the importance of the nurse creating trust and an equal meeting. The care relationship was related to getting to know the person’s history by using the nurse’s personal characteristics and how the nurse handled challenging conditions. Difficulties in creating such a relationship could be demands from the organization or the power dynamics within the health care facilitation.

Conclusion By creating trust and an equal meeting the nurse is able to get to know the person’s history and thereby provide a person-centered care for people with psychosis diagnosis.

Modersmålsundervisning i resandefolkets språk: En studie kring förutsättningarna för modersmålsundervisning i svensk romani2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Wetting properties of ceramic reinforced metal matrix composites on varied roughness profiles2017In: Proceedings of the International Thermal Spray Conference & Exposition (ITSC 2017), New York: Curran Associates, Inc. , 2017, Vol. 1, p. 537-542Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Superhydrophobic surfaces are of great importance in many industrial applications, especially where components are exposed to wet environments and low temperatures.Texturing of surfaces to reach superhydrophobicity can be achieved by thermal spraying technology, which is an attractive coating method as it is cheap, flexible and can employ a large range of feedstock materials. In this study, ceramic reinforced metal matrix composite (WC-CoCr) powders were sprayed using High Velocity Air Fuel method. They were varied based on their powder parameters such as carbide grain size, binder grain size and powder strength. The purpose was to investigate their hydrophobic characteristics and how these are influenced by different roughness profiles. The wetting properties such as contact angle and contact angle hysteresis were first investigated for the as-sprayed coatings. The roughness properties and Hausdorff Dimension were then related to the wetting properties. Aside from as-sprayed coatings, the effect of roughness and inherent wetting characteristics were studied by investigating the coating surface after grit blasting and polishing. Results show that powder parameters can lead to designing surfaces with higher surface roughnesses and thus having higher contact angles. It was also shown that surface composition of cermets has an impact on wettability, with the binder accounting for wetting characteristics and carbides accounting for roughness.

Giving instructions in the classroom: A gender aspect on the language used2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The PISA report from 2012 reveals that boys' and girls' results in school differ. In Ireland, where this study took place, and in many other countries in the world, girls score higher overall results than boys in the second-level assessments, and the gap is widening. The second level assessments are the final tests in compulsory school, which determine the students' grades. With this in mind I decided to investigate one crucial part of teaching – giving instructions.

The aim of this study was to investigate if there are any differences in how teachers give instructions in single-gender classes with boys and single-gender classes with girls and how the instructions are followed up. An additional aim was to discuss if different teaching methods have developed from this and, if so, what they are. The analysis was based on the following linguistic features of the instructions given: vocabulary, sentence length, intonation, pitch and gesture. Four classroom observations in four primary classes made up the material in this study.

The results were analysed and discussed in relation to previous research in this area and a gender theoretical perspective, followed by a critical discourse analysis. The results showed that girls were given more instructions, in terms of number of instructions, than the boys. Intonation and pitch showed differences that could be related to classroom environment. The observations showed significant differences in classroom environment with more disruptive talking in the boys' classes. A teacher-centered teaching method using direct instruction was common in both schools and the results showed that there were differences in teaching methods between the schools that could be related to gender. The critical discourse analysis revealed that the use of direct instruction led to an uneven power relationship in communication between teacher and student.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

This study focuses on a cooperation (collaboration) project between municipalities social services and the regions psychiatric care. They will capture a client / patient group that often risks falling between the chairs, persons with a psychic disorder and a problem of substance abuse. The purpose of the study was to study the projects cooperation on its organizational level. The central questions of issue were: What is cooperation in the project? What view do the professionals have of the projects cooperation, and partly have on members of the client group persons with a psychic disorder and a problem of substance abuse? The study was implemented through participating observations on three meetings with the govern group, the project group and the POS-team and interviews with two representatives from each principal. A total of 17 informants took part in the study, of which six of them were interviewed. The results point out a cooperation in different forms, which takes place on many levels; through three constellations (govern group, project group and POS-team) which through discussions of the target group on the meetings have in different ways tried to find forms for cooperation. That has included education efforts, study visits and common meetings. The professionals view of cooperation is predominantly positive. They see the profit to be the knowledge and the understanding for partly the complex problems around the target group, partly their own professionals possibilities and limitations in cooperation concerning view of knowledge, laws and legal framework and the organizational structure. The professionals view of cooperation and of the target group is of multifaceted character.

Länskonsulenten på besök2006Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Vad utgör själva kontrollen i tillsynsbesök?

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the high school girls' own thoughts and experiences of how they present themselves on various social media and how their identity is influenced by the constantly connection to social media. A qualitative approach has been used in which focus group interviews with six high school girls has been conducted. The theories that has been used in the study is based on Anthony Giddens' perspectives on identity and late modernity, Thomas Ziehe's thoughts on youth and society, Erving Goffman's dramaturgical approach and Judith Butler's and Frih and Söderberg's gender perspective. The growing use of social media has meant that hate online has grown larger since anonymity is allowed on certain sites.

    Abstract [en]

We are fighting for something; we are soldiers of the suburb. It's a reoccurring phenomenon that the young people in the suburbs around Sweden and around the world starts riots and for different reasons it creates a reaction where they go to attack against the police. The purpose of this essay is to uplift and take a part of the voice of the youth from Kronogården, and furthermore get a deeper understanding of the experience that the young people got from law enforcement both during and after the riots on the 31/8 – 2/9 2016. As a demarcation we have chosen to focus on the youth living in Kronogården that have participated or were present during the riots. This study was conducted in Hermeneuticphenomenological research approach with qualitative interviews. The ground of the study is emphasizing the interviews from 6 young persons from the ages 16-24. The essay is analyzed with help from previous researched and relevant theoretic notions. The notions we use in this essay are power, social cohesion and stigma, so that we can get a deeper understanding and accurate interpretations of the young people's experiences. In the result it appears that the youth feel harassed and unfairly treated by the police in comparison to other young people living in other neighborhood's and that their action against the police is actually a reaction to the treatment from law enforcement. Their way of expressing a discontent and frustration and a way to get heard. It also appears to be several different perceptions about the police and their conduct, depending if it's the community police or an outside law enforcement. Furthermore it also show that the community Kronogården has an enormous impact both emotional and physical on the people, they have sense of belonging and a very strong cohesion between the residents and they feel that media is a huge contribution to the negative interpretation of both the young people that live there and of the community as a whole.

Ten theses on why we need a social science panel on climate change2013In: ACME: An International E-Journal for Critical Geographies, ISSN 1492-9732, E-ISSN 1492-9732, Vol. 12, no 1, p. 155-176Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article discusses climate change from a critical social science perspective. Firstly, it is argued that climate change is not, in a fundamental sense, possible to understand from a natural science perspective, but demands an analysis of political power relations and our existing global political economy, capitalism. Therefore, climate change involves questions of global justice. Secondly, it is argued that the contemporary world economy, not only forcefully restructures climate, but also our societies, creating turbulent social strains, and therefore also an emerging global political reaction, one that is potentially giving hope for a solution, transnational justice and climate movements. However, thirdly, it is argued that these movements are not enough since they are still too ineffective to really challenge the basic injustices of global capitalism or its climate change effects. Social change is urgent, while solutions, strategies and mobilizations still seem too weak. Therefore, fourthly and lastly, we need a new kind of climate change panel, one that combines the theoretical-analytical skills of critical social scientists and the practical knowledge and organizational skills of movement intellectuals. A "Social Science Panel on Climate Change" is suggested in order to develop effective and realistic options and strategies.

Factors affecting international students’ attitudes toward recycling2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The number of students leaving their country to complete their secondary studies is increasing. And so, recycling is also an activity with steady growth. The problem we found is why international students recycle or not during their stay in other countries. To answer this, the study purpose is to find the factors that make the intentional students recycle or not to do it. Studies in relation with recycling are abundant, but there are few studies on the factors affecting the population to do it or not. Besides, existing studies highlight situational factors, such as habits and knowledge. Through the theoretical part and following the relevant methodological bases, a qualitative study was carried out through interviews with international students from different countries, in order to know their opinions and points of view regarding recycling. With the interview results, along with the information data draw from theory part, we carried out a division of the data into five major factors: Habit, knowledge, time, difficulties and personal initiative. These five groups could include all aspects that affect the behavior of international students. That is, depending on how the different factors affect the students, they will decide to recycle or not.
