    Abstract [en]

Efficient IT-mediated learning processes are crucial for modern knowledge organisations. Two case studies from Swedish public organisations are presented. These case studies illustrate two different aspects of professional conflicts affecting the learning processes of the organisations. Such power struggles could prevent or delay the learning process an also affect co-operation and motivation. Power struggles among professionals in organisations are not enough noticed in modern theories about learning in organisations.

    Abstract [en]

Reflection meetings were used as a method for learning and evaluation in the project County Academy at the County Administration of Sweden. An internal organisation for the administration of in-house education should be developed in the project. The project group consisted of both researchers and practitioners. The reflection meeting became an arena for ptoblem setting, analysis, reflection and evaluation. There were no pre-defined agendas for the meetings. The discussions often focused on different psychosocial aspects of the project. The discussions at the previous project meetings focused more on technical-oriented aspects.

Transparancy Aspects of eGovernment2006Inngår i: Proceedings of the 6th European Conference of e-Government / [ed] Remenyi, Dan, Reading, UK: Academic Conferences Limited , 2006, s. 197-204Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Implementations of eGovernment are criticised as being too focused on technical issues that lead to consequences such as user resistance. For example, a transparent problem analysis could contribute to define real problems and find proper solutions. Different professional competencies are needed in order to focus and analyse different aspects of problem situations. Traditional work culture and the competence of systems developers as well as professional territories towards other professionals could hinder cooperation in multi-professional teams.

Kan animation öka motivationen i skolan?: En kvantitativ analys av en animerad prototyp i skolmiljö 2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate if animated pictures combined with spoken and written text can increase primary school students' motivation. We will design and create a prototype based on earlier research and theory about how to design animated images for educational use. We conduct an experiment involving 55 students. The students would perform an identical school assignment, half the group performed the task without our prototype and half the group used our prototype. Afterwards students answered a questionnaire in which they rate their experience and motivation of the task. This in order to explore whether students' motivation increased by using the prototype or not. The results show no clear correlation between students' motivation and use of the prototype. We discuss possible reasons for this in our text and give suggestions for further research.

Less is more: When IT comes to knowledge management2000Inngår i: Proceedings of IRIS23, 2000, Vol. 23Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this work we take the point of departure from two thoroughly conducted casestudies, in which we have analysed certain knowledge work activities with followingimplications for design. Both studies clearly stated the call for a ICT-support whensearching information and sharing knowledge. For example, sharing bookmarksamong knowledge workers seemed to be a necessary and useful activity. Importantand valuable bookmarks often mirror what kind of information and knowledgepeople are looking for, and also what kind of forum they usually go to on the worldwide web. In this work we have developed a prototype, KnowMan, which managesbookmarks on the world wide web. The prototype is designed as a user-friendly"pad-interface" in which bookmarks can be collaboratively collected, shared andfurther explored and annotated by other knowledge workers. We end up with ageneral discussion about the possible effects of using KnowMan and what furtherdesign aspects that should be considered.

Attraktionskraften hos Göteborgs Stad: En kvalitativ studie om Employer- och Corporate Branding i offentlig sektor2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Reliability and Quality of Software Engineering in Manufacturing Industry: a case study2008Inngår i: 19th International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 2008.): Proceedings of a meeting held 10-14 November 2008, Seattle, Washington., Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers ( IEEE ) , 2008Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Software engineering has proposed the use of formal and industrial methods, models and tools within software industry for some time now. There are several good examples like the aircraft industry, branches of the military, the space shuttle development and the nuclear power plant industry that have come a long way with their software processes. However, there is still an ongoing dilemma of how to better introduce software processes within most regular production industry. In this paper we try to summaries our experiences of software processes and quality systems within the vehicle industry of northern Europe. A first investigating case study is conducted at a large software consulting company, focused on industrial software, and then we further investigate the software situation at one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in Scandinavia. We use a ten point list with adapted metrics to evaluate process quality and create a progress report of the work-flow and process implementation rate. Based on our results from the evaluation we also provide a first set of guidelines for how to level the differences in quality processes for hardware and software development.

Designing a Web-Based Education Platform for Swedish Civic Orientation2014Inngår i: Proceedings of the 37th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS 37), Ringsted, Denmark, 10-13 August. / [ed] Ahmad Ghazawneh, Jacob Nørbjerg and Jan Pries-Heje, Ringsted, 2014, s. 1-13Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Newcomers in Sweden face a problem of learning the Swedish society with respect to laws, culture, democratic values, education system, labor market and aspects of taking the role as a parent. The municipality of Gothenburg and the county administrative board in Västra Götaland are appointed by the Swedish government to educate newcomers in civic orientation. This paper describes some problems in providing distance education for Swedish civic orientation in forms of advanced learning modules (ALM). Requirements for implications for design were gathered through several conducted workshops together with relevant stakeholders through a participatory design approach. We concluded that our design for implications can be processed for future research and used together with a system solution.

Sociomateriality and design – How do we un-pack technology for knowing in practice?: Research in Progress/Workshop2016Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Blended e-learning permeates flexibility and school is no longer the only place for learning, rather through e-learning courses new ways of building competences throughout life and integrated in the workplace can be accomplished. Technological artifacts, the material itself do not create learning, rather, social and pedagogical aspects from a participatory perspective in e-learning courses is needed to balance the impact of technology. Challenges to reach balance between material and social is in this paper illustrated as a sociomaterial learning practice through a work-integrated e-learning (e-WIL) project between a university and collaborating manufacturing industries. This learning practice comprise design of e-learning courses, target industry knowledge needs to reach for being a competent employee. Teachers' and course participants' activities show various challenges of work integrated e-learning. Early results from focus group sessions and observations are categorized as knowing-how to design and use digital learning technology, knowing-what knowledge to be learnt for work practice and knowing-when to use new knowledge in work practice.

Work-Integrated Learning and Co-creation of Knowledge: Design of collaborative technology enhanced learning activities2014Inngår i: Proceedings of the 37th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS 37) / [ed] Ahmad Ghazawneh, Jacob Nørbjerg and Jan Pries-Heje, Ringsted, 2014, s. 1-15Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we aim to understand management’s perceptions of knowledge and competence development to inform the design of technology enhanced learning activities integrated in the workplace. Work-integrated learning can be viewed with the university lens on studies of formal education integrated in the workplace setting, but here we rather emphasize the conditions of the workplace as implications for design of successful e-learning initiatives. We conducted interviews with 15 manufacturing industries in Sweden and used qualitative content analysis approach to interpret the text data. Results show that companies describe a rich variation of work-integrated learning activities, but the step towards external collaboration with academia for co-production of knowledge is marginal. Also, broad-minded work for innovations is limited. This imply the need for well-planned design of richer collaborative acitivites between academia and organizations through use of media technology to encourage competence development.

Learning Aspects for Manufacturing Enterprises within Aerospace industry entering into Quality Standard AS91002011Inngår i: 24th ICDE World Conference on Open and Distance Learning: Expanding Horizons- new approaches to ODL, 2011, s. 1-11Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The aerospace industry is expected to grow substantially during the next two decades. As a result more suppliers aim for entering into this industry. Demands on safety and quality in this sector are particularly high, where SME´s must upgrade from the generic group of quality standards, the ISO9000 family, to AS9100, the aerospace standard. In this research we focus on the meaning of learning processes for successful implementation of quality standards in a workplace context at a manufacturing company. By using Blooms Revised Taxonomy of learning, we can understand, evaluate and design actions for continuous improvement which can be supported by an IT-based tool for self-assessment supporting organisational learning and implementation of the Quality Management System.

De formade ögonbrynens ilska: Queer coding inom Disneys porträttering av manliga skurkar2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examinehow and what Disney communicate to their target audience, by analyzing the four animated feature films Peter Pan (1953), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), and Princess and the Frog (2009). The animated movies have been analyzed through a qualitative method to get a better understanding of how Disney portray their male antagonists through queer coding. Through semiotics, and Peter Dahlgren's approach to analyzing media texts, we have gained a deeper understanding of what Disney is communicating. The study shows that there are many obvious cases of queer coding because of the stereotypically feminine way that the male villains are portrayed. The villains show signs of this femininity through everything from facial features to bodily movements. Through this detailed analysis it has come to our attention, that there is no doubt that the villains are being portrayed in a much more feminine way in comparison to the remaining characters in the movies.

Making sense of social media implementation: a longitudinal case study of the technological frames of hotel employees2017Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Social media has become an important part of people’s social life and effect how they communicate, interact and consume online. Social media, has therefore also to a great extent been adopted by organizations in order to be used both for internal and external communication. The purpose of this paper is to study the adoption and implementation of social media in hotel organizations from the employee’s, or user’s perspective by applying the concept of “technological frames” with focus on the nature of technology, technology strategy and technology in use. The paper is designed as a longitudinal, qualitative case study consisting of data collected in seven European countries. In total 28 in-depth interviews have been conducted during 2.5 years. Findings show that the employees’ technological frames to a high extent has been constructed outside the organization during their private usage, or non-usage of social media, and that these frames affect how they use social media in the hotel organizations. The contribution is an insight into how technologies, like social media that is introduced to employees outside the organizational setting, are used during an implementation process within the workplace. Keywords: social media, implementation, adoption, technological frames, social media marketing, usage, perception, hospitality,

Kommunikation för hållbar energianvändning i bostäder2019Rapport (Annet (populærvitenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [sv]

An mHealth artifact in home care: Professional progression through work integrated learning: Towards an IT supported caring conversations2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim is to study a problematic grocery-shopping situation within a home care organization, in one studied municipality in Sweden and for this, a qualitative action design research method is applied. As a solution to this problem, an mHealth (mobile health) artifact was developed and the thesis aims to study the developed solution and the WIL effects on the organization and the caring situation. The purpose is to emphasize on the perceptions of an mHealth artifact for the grocery shopping process as well as capture the early perceptions focusing on the values and effects for the different levels of engagement spanning the user groups involved. Then, finally investigating the effects on the caregivers’ competence development in relation to the mHealth artifact and the work integrated learning. This leads to the recognition of the need for a conversation between the caretakers and the caregivers. This results in the developed artifact, being found a conversational starter, nurturing and triggering a caring conversation, which leads to professional progression. This consequently, leads to higher quality of care and to the caregivers having more pride in their profession as well as having more time for the caretakers. This all concludes that technology will not replace caregivers. But caregivers, who use technology, will probably replace caregivers who don’t.

Software architecture graphs as complex networks: a novel partitioning scheme to measure stability and evolution2007Inngår i: Information Sciences, ISSN 0020-0255, E-ISSN 1872-6291, Vol. 177, nr 12, s. 2587-2601Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The stability and evolution of the structure of consecutive versions of a series of software architecture graphs are analysed using the theory of complex networks. Brief comparisons are drawn between the scale-free behaviour and second order phase transitions. On this basis a software design metric Icc is proposed. This software metric is used to quantify the evolution of the stability vs. maintainability of the software through various releases. It is demonstrated that the classes in the software graph are acquiring more out-going calls than incoming calls as the software ages. Three examples of software applications where maintainability and continuous refactoring are an inherent part of their development process are presented, in addition to a Sun Java2 framework where growth and backward compatibility are the more important factors for the development. Further to this a projected future evolution of the software structure and maintainability is calculated. Suggestions for future applications to software engineering and the natural sciences are briefly presented.

A Kenyan Cloud School: Massive Open Online & Ongoing Courses for Blended and Lifelong Learning2013Inngår i: Open Praxis, ISSN 2304-070X, Vol. 5, nr 4, s. 301-313Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This research describes the predicted outcomes of a Kenyan Cloud School (KCS), which is a MOOC that contains all courses taught at the secondary school level in Kenya. This MOOC will consist of online, ongoing subjects in both English and Kiswahili. The KCS subjects offer self-testing and peer assessment to maximize scalability, and digital badges to show progress and completion to recognize and validate non-formal learning. The KCS uses the Moodle LMS with responsive web design to increase ubiquitous access from any device. Access is free and open, and the KCS intends to be a contextualized open educational resource for formal secondary institutions to support blended learning and a free source of non-formal education for lifelong learning. The expected outcomes are that this effort will reduce secondary school dropout rates, improve test scores, become a quality resource for blended learning, as well as validate and recognize lifelong learning in Kenya.

Bridging the learning gap in Kenya with mobile learning: Challenges and future strategies2015Inngår i: Proceedings of E-Learn: World Conference on E-Learning in Corporate, Government, Healthcare, and Higher Education 2015 / [ed] curtis Ho & Grace Lin, University of Hawaii, USA, Chesapeake, VA: Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education, 2015, s. 1319-1325Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The overarching aim of this research was to study how mobile technology can catalyze informal learning and bridge the gap between informal and non-formal learning. In this study 30 Kenyan elite runners were equipped with a simple Android smartphone and free Internet for one year. The original research project focused on studying how a smartphone in the hands of impoverished Kenyans could assist and enhance informal learning. This project used log data, workshops and interviews to track the users’ progress. During the course of the study a huge desire for more formalized learning developed. Thus, a non-formal course on Human Rights was developed and made available for all Kenyans via any Internet connected device. In this way the intersection of these two projects provided an opportunity to satiate interests gained from unguided informal learning with structured non-formal learning. Key findings were that the smartphone empowered marginalized groups, augmented informal learning opportunities, and provided a means to bridge informal and non-formal learning to deliver educational opportunities to any device in the form of a non-formal MOOC. This research made a significant impact in the participants’ lives and the most common statement from the interviews was the statement “it helps us a lot”.

Do-It-Yourself Learning in Kenya: Exploring mobile technologies for merging non-formal and informal learning2014Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The educational landscape is changing and a variety of technologies and techniques are blurring the lines between traditional and non-traditional learning. This change is substantial in low-income countries: individuals in developing countries have a great desire to educate themselves and improve their quality of life. Kenyans are adequately literate and accustomed to mobile technology despite being a largely impoverished, poorly educated populace. Kenya represents an optimal setting in which to research the use and feasibility of modern mobile and educational technologies. The broad aim of this dissertation is to explore how mobile devices can catalyze and enhance both informal and non-formal learning. In particular, this dissertation explores how technologies and concepts such as mobile web apps, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), and learning incentives via a smartphone specifically affect informal and non-formal learning in Kenya. The primary research question is how can learning efforts that utilize mobile learning, MOOCs, and learning incentives combine non-formal and informal learning to develop and contribute to a do-it-yourself (DIY) approach to learning in Kenya? The primary method is action research. The first contribution of this dissertation is the finding that mobile web apps are currently better suited for data exchange than producing new content. The second contribution is the finding that a smartphone can enhance informal learning in a developing country with little or no scaffolding. The third contribution is the finding that non-formal learning efforts as a MOOC are shown to be a viable means of delivering non-formal learning in a developing country via a smartphone. The fourth contribution is the finding that the use of incentives such as digital badges provide a means by which to validate non-formal learning and contribute to a DIY attitude towards learning creation, where individuals can freely complement or replace a traditional curriculum.

Native Apps Vs. Mobile Web Apps2013Inngår i: International Journal of Interactive Mobile Technologies (iJIM), ISSN 1865-7923, E-ISSN 1865-7923, Vol. 7, nr 4, s. 27-32Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The extensive growth and expansion of smartphones and tablets and therewith the use of mobile web applications that utilize HTML5 and related technologies are frequently discussed and debated in media as possible replacements for native applications. The aim of this study was to explore the viability of replacing native applications with mobile web applications in a developing country setting. Two mobile web applications were developed. The first mobile web application tracked runs and the second mobile web application was a booking system for scheduling "slum runs". The subjects who tested these apps were elite, semi-professional Kenyan runners primarily from the Kibera slum area outside of Nairobi. After a 6-month test period the participants concluded and results indicated that the mobile web application for tracking runs performed poorly compared to native applications due to poor GPS performance, while the mobile web application for booking slum runs performed well. The conclusion from this study is that mobile web applications that require hardware interaction such as using the GPS, GPU, or camera are not yet viable alternatives for native applications. However, mobile applications that only require a native interface and content consumption are suitable substitutes for native applications.

No University Credit, No Problem?: Exploring Recognition of Non-Formal Learning2014Inngår i: 2014 IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference Proceedings, IEEE Computer Society, 2014, 2420-2426, 2014, s. 2420-2426Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are disrupting traditional, higher education and redefining how learning takes place online. These open courses typically offer some form of recognition, such as a certificate of completion and/or digital badge, to recognize, validate, and in some cases even accredit learning. A general problem with MOOCs is the uncertainty regarding the use and goals of recognition, validation, and accreditation (RVA), and participants' acceptance and perception of such techniques. This research effort addresses this problem by exploring course partici-pants' attitudes and levels of acceptance of non-formal learning recognition compared to traditional university credit in both devel-oped and developing countries. The actual study uses both certifi-cates of completion and digital badges to recognize and validate learning in an introductory, university level course in web pro-gramming using HTML5/CSS. The course is available to anyone, but was specifically marketed to participants from Sweden and Kenya. Empirical data was gathered using interviews and online surveys in the course. The preliminary results are that participants from developing countries value digital recognition to a greater extent than their counterparts in Europe. However, both Swedes and Kenyans see open courses with digital recognition as a com-plement to traditional learning to individually construct an educa-tion.

Putting a MOOC for Human Rights in the Hands of Kenyans: The Haki Zangu Case for Non-Formal Learning2014Inngår i: Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries, ISSN 1681-4835, E-ISSN 1681-4835, Vol. 65, nr 3, s. 1-17Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The research goal of this project was to explore the use and effects of non-formal education and incentives in the context of a developing country. The practical aim of this project was to create, implement, and evaluate a platform about human rights that was available to any Kenyan for free in order to increase knowledge and engagement. Therefore, a non-formal massive open online course (MOOC) about human rights was designed and launched. The course was free and open to anyone in Kenya and offered both a digital badge and certificate from Stockholm University in Sweden upon completion. The course was called Haki Zangu (Kiswahili for "My Rights"), and it explored how using incentives such as a digital badge and certificate of completion affected learning outcomes. This course offered ubiquitous access based on principles of responsive web design and used audio recordings of the entire course content. The course is perpetual and still on-going, but after six months there were 160 participants who had enrolled, and ten participants had completed the course and received certificates and digital badges. The participants showed extensive enthusiasm and engagement for human rights issues, and they expressed desires to learn more and further spread knowledge about human rights. The current findings suggest that the availability of digital badges and certificates increased interest for participation and positively affected learning outcomes. Moreover, the use of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) format with incentives proved successful, combined with the contextualization and accessibility of the course content. Furthermore, the technical platform proved adequate for disseminating education for free in a developing country, and allowed for unencumbered access regardless of device. Lastly, a key challenge for future non-formal learning efforts in developing countries is the cost of Internet access.

MOOCs for Professional Teacher Development2014Inngår i: Proceedings of Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education International Conference 2014 / [ed] M. Searson & M. Ochoa, Chesapeake, VA: AACE , 2014, s. 1580-1586Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A MOOC is a trending concept in education that is disrupting traditional methods oflearning consumption. The emergence and use of MOOCs for professional teacher development isstill uncommon, but on the verge of gaining a foothold. Research regarding MOOCs typicallyfocuses on impacts for higher education and lifelong learning. However, the specific intersection ofMOOCs and professional teacher development is poorly researched. This concept papercontemplates the benefits and drawbacks of using MOOCs for professional teacher developmentand calls for more practical studies and explorative research. This paper also speculates on the basicMOOC design criteria and principles needed to maximize engagement and course completion, which are currently common issues with general MOOCs. The conclusion is that MOOCs can be acost- and resource-effective means to deliver quality education in order to further professionalteacher development. However, possible risks are employers' reluctance to accept MOOCaccreditation as equivalent professional development and the lack of relevant MOOC courses forprofessional development.

"Då menar jag inte att man ska få en käftsmäll när man får en käftsmäll": En kvalitativ analys om spelares uppfattning av inlevelse med Head Mounted Displays2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis will study if Head Mounted Displays affect the immersion experienced by gamers while playing video-games, how they expect it to affect the experience and what gamers feel is missing from the technology today to be able to experience total immersion.

The research is conducted by using a survey and interviews. The main purpose of the survey is to identify which aspects affect the immersion while playing with classic videogame consoles. The in-depth interview show the responses from four different gamer respondents about their experiences and expectations for using Head Mounted Displays today.

Our study show that Head Mounted Displays do make the user experience higher levels of immersion compared to classic consoles, but if there is a break in presence the reaction is much stronger, since the amount of sensory data that needs to be dealt with is increased. The study also identifies new possible design issues for more seamless experiences with the Head Mounted Displays. For example, using better hand representations, to be able to see and use your own hand in the game, applying wireless technology and solutions for better support for users travel over large areas in game. Summing up, the gamers are optimistic about how Virtual Reality and Head Mounted Displays will affect the gaming industry, they believe it is the future of videogames.

Exploring brokering situations in an innovation boundary context2011Inngår i: Selected Papers of the Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia:: “IRIS 34 - ICT of Culture – Culture of ICT” / [ed] Judith Molka-Danielsen & Kai Kimppa,, 2011Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is based on studies of a living lab process, which is an open, user-centric, innovation approach, where several actors from industry, user groups and academia are involved. We aim to describe and analyze the dynamics in an innovation boundary context based on a living lab process. An action-oriented research approach was applied and the empirical results are from The Find Project (TFP), with the aim of customizing an ICT product based on the needs of a user group. The findings are analyzed from a community of practice perspective where the three different communities i) researchers from Halmstad Living Lab (HLL), ii) ICT developers (ICTD), and iii) next of kin's to demented elderly persons (NOKD) represented the units of analysis. The analysis identified several boundary situations that played a vital role for the innovation process. The contribution of our research to innovation theory is a process model describing the dynamics in an innovation boundary context with regard to boundary objects-in-use as well as to brokering. The research highlights two different levels of brokering: i) product/service brokering; and ii) process brokering.

    Boundary dialogues in user-centric innovation2012Inngår i: 18th Americas Conference on Information Systems 2012, AMCIS 2012, Seattle, WA, 2012, Vol. 4, s. 2910-2919Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is based on a user-centric innovation project, Free2Ride, which is seen as an example of community interaction that overcomes boundaries. Free2Ride aimed at developing a piece of ICT safety equipment consisting of a sender (on the horse) and a receiver (application in a smartphone) to be used by equestrian club members during their everyday riding activities. We will answer the research question of what the characteristics of a boundary dialogue in user-centric innovation activities are. The aim of the paper is to propose a model describing the characteristics of boundary dialogue in user-centric innovation that involve different communities of practices such as ICT developers, users and researchers. We applied a combination of research approaches consisting of action research and engaged scholarship approach. The theoretical framework for analyzing our findings is communities of practices with a specific interest in boundary spanning and learning dialogues. Our contribution is a model describing the characteristics of boundary dialogues in user-centric innovation. An important element of that model is the mental wandering, inwards and outwards, by core members in a community. We discuss the temporal as well as the symbolic nature of the mental wandering during the boundary dialogue in user-centric innovation activities. © (2012) by the AIS/ICIS Administrative Office All rights reserved.

Vill ni betala för min film?: En kvalitativ fallstudie kring framgångsfaktorer i crowdfundingkampanjer2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Crowdfunding is a concept that is growing among entrepreneurs. Crowdfunding involves using small donations from many people able to finance their product or project. Kickstarter is a crowdfundingplattform where you can create campaigns to raise money. If the campaign should be seen as successful need a financial target that met. Our investigation involves identifying factors that are important for the success of their campaign. We also want to investigate how these factors are interrelated and how the description of the project affects people to donate.

The survey found that personal and targeted languages to different types of genres is important to motivate people to want to donate. Use of images to enhance text is a factor that proved to be effective. Moreover, it is important to work creatively with rewards given to people who donate. These factors motivate a person to both donate money to the campaign, but also spread it to other social media, which is crucial for the success of the campaign.

Behov av dokumentation inom agila projekt vid systemförvaltning: En fallstudie2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Today, the TV vignette is considered an embellishment to a TV program, despite its broad audiences and unique appearance. We wanted to find out if the television vignette has some common features and conventions but also find out how it relates to genre. We used a case study where we analyzed ten vignettes that we chose from certain criteria. We used a model based on image analysis that we modified to fit our needs. The main parts of each model consisted semiotics, imagery, dramaturgy and sound. We also made a couple of interviews with people who are active or used to work with vignettes. As a result we discovered that the television vignettes consist of certain conventions and that the vignette will not be considered as an independent genre, until the public has accepted it. However, we found that the vignette has common features and conventions that could fit into the established art form Motion Graphics. We see, however, that the vignette has the potential, thanks to digitization, to evolve and become a kind of its own.Today, the TV vignette is considered an embellishment to a TV program, despite its broad audiences and unique appearance. Införande av distansmöte via video: Vid samordnad vård- och omsorgspanering i Västra Götalandsregionen2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study explores learning when professionals return to education and use their professional work experience to fulfil their study objectives. The research question is: How do students learn from experiences in two contexts-a master’s course at a university and their organisations of employment-by attending a blended learning course? The study builds on Engeström’s (2001) expansive learning model of two interacting activity systems, namely, the students’ master’s degree programme and their professional workplaces. As the study context is an online learning environment it follows a "netnographic" approach. The findings show that the students integrated requirements from their university studies with interventions in their professional work situations. The online learning environment enabled reification of reflections which the students could use later in their study and supported them to become more skilled professionals and influencers in their organisations of employment. © Universitetsforlaget.

Rethinking expansive learning: Experience from an educational design supporting authors in practice2015Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This paper analyses an online community of master's students taking a course in ICT and organisational learning. The students initiated and facilitated an educational design for organisational learning called Proactive Review in the organisation where they are employed. By using an online discussion forum on Google groups, they created new ways of reflecting and learning. We used netnography to select qualitative postings from the online community and expansive learning concepts for data analysis. The findings show how students changed practices of organisational learning in their professional organisation and how they developed their identity to become more skilled practitioners. We discuss the effects of the written discussions and reflections on the students' endeavour to become authors in practice. Our contribution to the research consists of considerations of changing the spoken word to the written word, which lacks spontaneity but supports equality among students.

    Abstract [sv]

Laptopers in an educational practice: Promoting the personal learning situation2010Inngår i: Computers and education, ISSN 0360-1315, E-ISSN 1873-782X, Vol. 54, nr 2, s. 311-320Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this article an ethnographical study of laptopers' activities during lectures in a university milieu is analyzed as different kinds of involvements. Through interviews and observations we have focused on how these involvements influence the laptopers' alignment towards the educational practice. The analysis shows the importance of separating the educational practice and the personal learning situation. Studying students' learning intentions, rather than certain laptop related activities, we get a deeper understanding of the role the laptop can take during learning activities. Five general characteristics of laptoping are found. Negotiating the laptops' different roles in the educational practice opens up for an understanding of the students personal learning situation as being more than just listening to a lecturer. Additionally, competent integration of digital tools into the learning situation extends the dimensions of the lecture beyond the lecturing hours and personal note taking. Such knowledge is vital for creating foundations for digital competency in a digitized society. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

From narratives to numbers: Data work and patient-generated health data in consultations2018Inngår i: Studies in Health Technology and Informatics / [ed] Klein G.O.,Karlsson D.,Moen A.,Ugon A., IOS Press, 2018, Vol. 247, s. 491-495Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents preliminary findings on how the introduction of patient-generated health data (PGHD) triggers changes during patient-nurse consultations. This article builds on a two-year case study, examining the work practice at a cancer rehabilitation clinic at a Swedish Hospital using PGHD. The study focuses on how nurses’ use data, gathered by patients with a mobile phone app, during consultations. The use of PGHD introduce a change in the translation work, the work of turning rich patient descriptions and transform them into data, during the consultation for documentation and clinical decision-making. This change affects precision, questions asked and the use of visualizations as well as the patient-nurse decision making. © 2018 European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) and IOS Press.

User Satisfaction of Maternal and Infant Healthcare Apps in China and How to Improve Them2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

With the increased number of mothers and newborns as well as the increased tendency to use smartphones to gather healthcare information, mobile healthcare app markets have great potential in China. However, little work has been done on users' satisfaction of Chinese maternal and infant health apps. The purpose of this study is to determine what factors influence users' satisfaction and how to improve them. The triangulation method has been selected for doing this research. In the first step, a questionnaire was used to verify the influential factors that contribute to a positive influence on users' satisfaction. Further, adopted interviews were used to investigate the specific requirement from users' perspective. The empirical findings show the user's expectation and perceived quality of the product has a positive influence on user's satisfaction and intention to use the app. In the next step I analyzed how to improve the apps from the users' perspective. The research findings presented in this thesis will help to evaluate mobile apps relating to maternal and infant health in China, and could thus be beneficial to different actors through adherence to the following advice: enterprises should conduct user surveys and usability tests to understand their customers' needs, and use this information in the products before sending to the market, the timely tracking of users is also needed to gain knowledge of the users' experience with the app, and further improve it; the government should enact related laws concerning the apps as soon as possible; and users should enhance their judgment of the information content and resist blindly believing the apps.

Knowledge is acknowledged?: A field study about people, processes, documents and technologies2000Inngår i: Proceedings of the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, IEEE, 2000, s. 68-Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study addresses the issue of technology support for people in knowledge management processes. The results are based on field study of a quality support group in a pharmaceutical company. Particularly, the knowledge work activities are analyzed in a framework of different knowledge management processes with consequent implications for the design of new IT use. The results indicate that there are many processes constituting knowledge management. Some of the processes are appropriately supported with different technologies while others are not supported at all. One successful tool is recognized as a knowledge-mediating system, which seems to be extremely important ("the very lifeline") as a shared workspace for this particular setting. Beyond the current use of IT a more thorough discussion about future needs and requirements is outlined.

    Abstract [en]

IT-support for knowledge work should be designed to support and enhance the human interaction and knowledge sharing processes. The specific usage of web-based technology gives the possibilities of putting crucial, knowledge-related interaction on-line. For example, sharing bookmarks among knowledge workers seems to be a necessary and useful activity. Important and valuable bookmarks often mirror what kind of information and knowledge people are looking for and also what kind of forum they use to go to on the world wide web. In this work we have developed a prototype, KNOWMAN, which manages bookmarks on the world wide web. The prototype is designed as a user-friendly "pad-interface" in which bookmarks can be collaboratively collected, shared and further annotated and explored by other knowledge workers.

Competence Management Systems in Networking Organisations: Designing for Empowerment?2007Inngår i: Proceedings of 30th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia: IRIS 30 / [ed] Tarja Tiainen, Hannakaisa Isomäki,Mikko Korpela, Anja Mursu, Pirkko Nykänen,Minna- Kristiina Paakki & Samuli Pekkola, University of Tampere , 2007, s. 1236-1248Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Current trends among business companies imply that sources of human competencies are spread across intra-organisational and inter-organisational units into networks of organisations of different kinds. This paper explores the challenges for design of competence management systems (CMS) raised by inter-organisational collaboration in a network of private companies. We take the point of departure from the co-workers’ abilitly to explore and manage their competence. The research question to be answered is: How can a network perspective on competence management systems empower co-workers? The paper presents findings from an on-going research project aiming at identifying design implications of a network competence management system (nCMS), where the role of the individual is valued crucial for its success. We argue that there is a need to take a critical stand towards common assumptions of CMS as a tool for intra organisational strategic work - instead a nCMS should empower the individual member of the network organization.

A new agenda for research on higher education and information technology2008Inngår i: Proceedings of the 31th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia, IRIS 31 , Åre, 2008Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

There is a need for a more timely agenda for research on teaching and learning, and the use information technology in higher education. It is here claimed that many of the prior research issues within this area are obsolete. Information technology infrastructure previously provided solely by the institutions of higher education is now successively replaced by the students own technology which they bring to the educational context. The new agenda should orient towards (i) integration of students own technology in educational activities, and integration between on and of campus learning activities (ii) tools for supporting activities in classrooms such as presenting, visualizing and simulating, and (iii) issues of availability to participate in alternative ways, making educational activities available to new groups. The suggested agenda is discussed using a number of anecdotes collected in various educational settings.

Communication in boundary practices: from media choice to interaction negotiation?2009Inngår i: Proceedings of the 32nd Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia, IRIS 32: Inclusive Design / [ed] Judith Molka-Danielsen, Molde University College , 2009Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The research presented in this paper is an initial analysis of an ongoing project build on work in, what we call, boundary practices. These new professional roles emerge in the border lands between existing practice communities. This change effect knowledge production, decision making, collaboration and a range of other aspects in work. However, the study at hand focus how work is conducted and coordinated through and with new media technologies, and in particular how media are put to use. We have conducted ethnographical studies within a global automotive manufacturing company. The organization has recently introduced a new role, subsystem manager, i.e. a technical expert that is given strategic responsibilities for shared parts and platforms within the organization. The subsystem manager is to participate in a number of global meetings with other experts within the subsystem or with other managers for closely related or integrated subsystems. Three different global meetings have been observed and preliminary findings indicate that some of the fundamental assumptions built into the concept of media choice and media richness might be problematic as an analytical perspective used on our empirical context. The work we have studied is characterized by negotiations, not only concerning how to solve a task, but also concerning what the task actually is. The choice of media is in itself is a matter of negotiations. Practitioners are adding new media to ongoing interactions, rather than using media in sequence and one medium is not used exclusively. Rather a number of media are used in parallel.
