Hur sjuksköterskor kan stärka personer med diabetes att hantera sin egenvård2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Diabetes is a fastgrowing disease and a global health problem. It´s important that people with diabetes learn to manage their self-care to avoid complications, maintain a good health and get a freer life that they themselves control. The aim was to describe how nurses strengthens people with diabetes to manage their self-care. A literature study was carried through based on eight qualitative scientific articles and one quantitative scientific article. The analysis resulted into three main themes and five subthemes. The main themes were: strengthening self-care activities, relationships and patient at the center and support for self-care. Subthemes were: skills development, opportunities, control, communications and roles. This study indicates a patient/person-centred care from the perspective of individual which is consistent with the approach under development in Swedish health care today. Nurses need correct skills and required time to properly train and educate people. They also desire to gain new knowledge to educate people to a good self-care. Group-based personal education gives a good insight of the people and provides better health as well as lower costs of care due to fewer complications. Various efforts of "tools" for nurses to have in the education of people and the communication between the nurse-person functioning are crucial elements for achieving a good self-care. Nurses should be aware of the power relationship in the I-you- relationship with the person to avoid "taking over" the patient's empowerment and responsibility for their own self-care.

Det är tyvärr bröstcancer: En litteraturbaserad studie om kvinnors erfarenheter av att drabbas av bröstcancer2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women. The diagnosis and subsequent treatment can mean great mental and physical distress, which means that nurses play a pivotal role in easing these women's' suffering. In order for the nurses to fulfill this function a better and more comprehensive understanding of what these women go through during the process of their illness is required. Aim: To examine women's experiences of having breast cancer. Method: A literature study was conducted, analyzing ten qualitative scientific articles dealing with women's experiences of breast cancer. Articles were found via searches in the nursing literature database Cinahl and analyzed to clarify women's experiences of being affected by breast cancer using Fribergs' five-step model. Results: Being diagnosed with breast cancer aroused many emotional reactions and thoughts. The result showed that the suffering associated with breast cancer stems from different reasons; the diagnosis' itself invoked images of death which was a source of suffering. Physical changes due to the treatment caused another type of suffering..The result also showed a lack of information which was a source of suffering. Hope was however gained when the women set up tangible goals, something that eased the women's suffering. Conclusion: The most important conclusion to be drawn from the study's result is that nurses can be helpful in easing the suffering by creating a safe relationship with the patient within which they provide sufficient information about breast cancer.

Sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att använda bedömningsinstrument vid misstänkt postpartumdepression: En litteraturstudie2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Previous studies have shown that approximately one in ten women suffer from postpartum depression, which often occurs within three months after child birth. To detect postpartum depression, health care often uses screening tools such as the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale or the Postpartum depression screening scale. In the meeting with a woman with suspected postpartum depression, it is important to ask open questions and to have a person-centered approach.

Aim: The aim of this study was to illustrate nurses' experiences of using assessment tools when encountering women with suspected postpartum depression.

Method: A literature study based on the content of seven qualitative studies and one mixed method, of which only the qualitative part was used.

Results: Three main themes were detected: the importance of knowledge and intuition, the ability to create safety and difficulties when using the screening tools.

Conclusions: The assessment tools used when suspecting postpartum depression was experienced as something positive, although it has its limits in answering the questions in a timely manner and when encountering someone who speaks another language or has another culture.

Äldre människors upplevelser av att leva med depression: En litteraturbaserad studie2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Depression is a major problem in society and around 800 000 people in the world commit suicide yearly because of depression. Between 11 and 15 percent of the elderly are estimated to suffer from depression and many will go untreated because of stigmatization, reduced resources in health care and lack of knowledge about the disease. It is therefore important that nurses are aware of what depression is in order to identify elderly in risk zone of depression and to provide adequate nursing care.

Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate elderly people's perception of living with depression.

Method: A literature-based study based on analysis of qualitative data. Twelve articles were analyzed according to Freberg's five-step model.

Results: The result was presented in two main themes. The first one Hiking on unknown land describes how elderly experienced loneliness and how they lost control in life. The second one the battle being fought describes how negative thoughts and feelings affected elderly and how stigma affected their relations with relatives and friends.

Conclusion: The result shows that depression affects elderly's entire life situation. Depression have a negative impact on daily life which impairs their wellbeing and the stigmatization around depression causes elderly people not to seek professional health care. Therefore, elderly needs support to break the barrier to seek nursing care. Professional health personnel must use facilitate individually coping strategies to strengthen elderly´s wellbeing.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Simulation has been a method used in pilots training for many years. It has been an effective method of training pilots for situations that may occur. Preparation with a low risk and a high fidelity should therefore be possible to use in other occupations. In healthcare, simulation is a relatively new method and has so far limited research.

Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate nurses' experience of simulated training.

Method: To illustrate the experience of simulated training, a literature review was chosen as a method and both qualitative and quantitative articles were chosen. An analysis of twelve scientific articles were carried out.

Result: Qualitative data showed that nurses' experience of simulated training was generally positive and that the nurses could use simulation as a tool for development. Quantitative data enhanced results of knowledge and confidence after simulation training but also that feedback and reflection were important for learning.

Conclusion: By using simulation training, nurses can develop their skills, learn new skills and practice skills that they do not use frequently. Using simulation, high risk situations with deteriorating patient, can be practiced with low risk for the actual patient. Nurses´ experience, knowledge and skills can during simulation, as a safe environment, develop and gain patient safety and good patient outcome in real-life situations.

    Abstract [en]

Background The amount of patients are constantly on the rise. To be able to care for both the patient and the relative, the nurse must have both the competence and the resources in order to provide the required nursing. As a nurse, one should be able to connect to the relative and be a support person, give the information politely and invest in their emotions. That can be a both difficult and emotionally stressful task especially in the emergency and intensive care. Aim The aim of the study was to illuminate the relatives' experiences of dealing with a family member in a critical state in emergency or intensive care. Method The method was a qualitative study based on eight literary studies. Friberg's five step method was used and eight different scientific articles were analyzed. Results The result was one main theme and four subthemes. The main theme was commuting between powerlessness and control and the subthemes were information, to participate in the care, being near but far away and hope and despair. Conclusion The study showed that a good relationship and providing continuous information is essential for the relatives to understand the tragic situation. The information will lead to security and reducing the amount of suffering for the relatives. Being able to be close with the patient was a necessity and the relatives expressed a need of getting support from the nurse during these meetings.

    Abstract [en]

Heart failure is a lifelong condition, causing symptoms that affect the patient's quality of life. An estimated 15 out of 1000 registered patients are diagnosed with heart failure every year in Sweden. The condition is not curable; therefore it is essential for nurses to promote the patient's quality of life. Quality of life is a subjective experience and unique for every individual. The purpose of this study is to describe factors influencing the experiences of quality of life for patients with heart failure in their daily life. The qualitative approach used is the Friberg (2012) five-step-model analysis. Four themes were identified regarding patients' experiences of the quality of life, the experience of affinity, the experience of the support, the experience of existential thoughts and experiences of changes in daily life. The results showed that factors which affect patients' quality of life are unique and individual.Examples of factors that patients with heart failure in this literature study's result mentioned were that knowledge about their condition, having a positive attitude and a supporting social environment strengthened the patients' experiences of quality of life. A lack of support and knowledge weakened patient's experience of quality of life. The conclusion of this literature study is that it is essential for nurses to be attentive to the patient's unique values in order to provide a good individualized care for heart failure patients.

Result: the findings were two major themes, when caring communication was promoted and when caring communication was limited. This gave subthemes, among others, such as the nurse presence in the meeting between the physician the patient or relatives, the hierarchy of care limits the nurse, a supportive relationship, limited standards and emotional impact of the nurse. Conclusion: a good relationship, knowledge about communication and teamwork where seen to be important and it allowed and promoted a caring communication. In situations when the nurse, nor the patient, were informed about patient’s prognosis, the caring communication was missing which led to limited emotional support.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Sexual health is of great importance to a human being and an essential part throughout life. When a person suffers from long-term illness, injury and/or disability, it affects the person in several different ways. Palliative care means that patients with incurable diseases are given an active overall care.

Aim: The purpose was to illuminate patients' experiences of both sexual health and of talking about it in palliative care.

Method: A literature-based study. In total, ten articles, five with qualitative approach, four with quantitative approach and one with mixed methodology, were chosen for the analysis of the literature.

Results: The result of the analysis is presented in two content areas and six themes. Experiences of sexual health is about sexual problems, not feeling whole and changed relationships. Experiences of talking about sexual health is about lack of communication, unmet needs and different approaches.

Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that when a person is in the final stage of life, sexual health is important for the quality of life, but it is difficult for both patients and nurses to talk about. Lack of communication led to unmet needs. To meet these needs nurses must have a person-centered approach and, when this is accomplished patients appreciate it in palliative care.

Background: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common form of cancer among women worldwide. Cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus. Most women are infected by the virus during their lifetime but it usually clears up without any intervention. In Sweden every woman gets an invitation to cervical cancer screening when they turn 23 years old. Screening is done to detect and prevent cervical cancer. Every woman is able to get a vaccination against the human papillomavirus to prevent upcoming of cervical cancer. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe women's thoughts about cervical cancer screening. Method: A method to contribute to evidence-based nursing with ground in analysis of qualitative research was performed to identify women's thoughts about cervical cancer screening. Twelve articles where found and analyzed by a five-step method described by Friberg (2012). Five main themes and thirteen subthemes were identified. Results: The result showed cultural aspects, lack of knowledge, no possibility to go, feelings about the screening and reasons to go. Conclusion: The conclusion was that women experienced fear and anxiety about Pap smear testing. They also had barriers in their everyday-life. Cultural values were a barrier to attend to cervical cancer screening. The women experienced lack of knowledge about cervical cancer and the Pap smear. Lack of time and money was also an excuse not to go. Support from health-care professionals motivated women to get a Pap smear done.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Intimate partner violence is a global health problem causing physical and mental health issues. Research has shown that abused women doesn’t get the support they expect and need. The human right to health need to be considered in nursing, and emphasises the need for adequate care.

Aim: to describe nurses’ experiences of caring for women who are exposed to intimate partner violence.

Method: A literature overview based on five quantitative, four qualitative and one mixed method study between 2009 and 2018.

Results: Three main themes were identified; Nurses’ view of their role, Nurses’ preconditions for intervention and Nurses’ emotional impact. The result showed that nurses’ role is mainly about identifying the abuse and supporting the woman. Nurses’ preconditions for intervention is poor due to the lack of knowledge and resources. Their attitudes on intimate partner violence might also hinder their intervention. The results also showed that meeting the exposed women affected nurses’ emotionally and therefore they avoided the problem.

Conclusion: More knowledge is needed about nurses’ experiences and knowledge about caring for victims of intimate partner violence. Nurses may avoid the subject and therefore fail in identifying violence which can lead to unnecessary suffering for the women.

The level of sense of coherence among Swedish nursing staff2019In: Journal of Advanced Nursing, ISSN 0309-2402, E-ISSN 1365-2648Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim To explore the level of sense of coherence among Swedish nursing staff.

Design: An explorative quantitative study design was adopted using a short form for measuring sense of coherence.

Methods Data were collected in January 2018 from nurses working in full‐time positions at two hospitals in Western Sweden. A total of 93 nurses completed the 13 item questionnaire measuring sense of coherence. Descriptive statistics were applied to obtain means and standard deviations. Spearman's rank correlation was used to describe strength of association between sense of coherence and socio‐demographic categories. Between‐group differences were defined using the nonparametric tests of Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal‐Wallis test.

Results The internal consistency of the SOC‐13 was low. An inter‐item‐correlation test indicated that two items decreased the internal consistency of the scale. The level of the three dimensions of sense of coherence varied; manageability was weakest and decreased the total sense of coherence. The meaningfulness dimension was as strongest.

Conclusion On a national level, nurses reported weaker SOC than the general population, but stronger in an international comparison of nurses. They found their work difficult to manage, but meaningful.

Impact On a national level, the nurses report weaker SOC than the general population, but stronger in an international comparison of nurses. Findings from this study will have an impact on how nurses can manage work related stress in terms of sense of coherence. There will also be an impact on nurses' well‐being, which in a long run benefits patients.

    Abstract [en]

Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a growing threat throughout society and causes great suffering for patients. Patients with MRSA are often met with lack of knowledge in contact with healthcare.

'The aim of this study was to examine patients´ experiences of being carriers of MRSA.

This literature study is based on analyses of qualitative research. Eight qualitative articles were analyzed using five step model by Friberg. Through the analyses two main-themes and five sub-themes were developed. The two main-themes were: personal trauma and from frustration to insight. The five sub-themes were: changed self-image, fear and concern, alone and exposed, distrust and anger, need for knowledge and security.

The conclusion was that patients with MRSA ask for and need clear information and knowledge related to their carrier status in order not to cause unnecessary suffering. Healthcare professionals need better knowledge in the area to accommodate patients´ needs.

    Abstract [en]

Background: We are facing a global lack of working nurses since nurses end their carrier earlier than their planned retirement. The psychosocial work environment is a big problem in the nursing field and affects the nurses´ health status, suffering and stress level.

Aim: The aim with this study was to describe nurses´ perceptions of factors that affects their psychosocial working environment.

    Method: A literature overview

Results: The collegial relationships, the workplace manager, the structure of the working hours and the organization and staffing makes the ground for however the nurses will appreciate and stay at their workplace, or if they are going to dislike the work and leave either the workplace or the nursing-field entirely.

Conclusion: Adequate staffing, good relations with the co-workers, a manager that sees and appreciates the nurses is work environmental factors that increase the chances that the nurses is going to appreciate their work, and remain at their workplace. To achieve a good work environment there should be enough time for the nurses´ to take good care of the patients and colleagues. There should also be a supporting management at the work place and a good cooperation in the working team. A mean manager, understaffing, bad relationships with colleagues, and a lack of trust and independence increases the risk that the nurses will leave both the workplace and the entire nursing field.

Namibian nurses experience of patients adherence to the treatment plan: an empirical study of nurses work related to patients diagnosed with multi drug resistant Tuberculosis2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: A low adherence is one of the reasons for the development of drug resistant Tuberculosis. One of the identified factors connected to adherence is the relations between health care personal and patient. Nurses all over the world daily work close to the patient supporting them to achieve a high adherence to their treatment plan. Still there is an underrepresentation in a scientific view of exploring and evaluating this preformed work.

Aim: The aim of this study wad to explore how the Namibian nurses experienced adherence to treatment in patients diagnosed with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. Method: A qualitative research technic was used to collect data. The interview questions were constructed in a semi-structure with partly opened questions. The data was analysed with Graneheim and Lundman (2004) analysis model.

Result: Strategies that was used by the nurses to enable a high adherence was providing information, counselling and education to the patient together with a practical support of delegating DOTS and providing the patient with medicine. There was a divided opinion on how to communicate with the patient depending on the nurse fundamental view of adherence. A doctor centred view resulted in a one way communication by informing the patient. A patient centred view of adherence resulted in a two way communication when the nurse aimed to learn about the patient own point of views. Conclusion: To enable a high adherence there has to be a two way communication which demands high communicational skills from the nurse.

Background: When a child is diagnosed with cancer it will change the life for the whole family. The safe everyday life is converted into concern and fear, and a new life with hospital visit, medicines and treatments begins. Aim: The aim of the study is to describe how parents experience their lives when their children suffering from cancer. Method: A literature- based study based on ten qualitative articles. The articles were analyzed and the result were compiled. Result: The study found that in the course of cancer diagnosis, the parents felt that their whole world was turned upside down. The disease affected the relationship with the siblings, as well as the parents' own health. The changing work situation contributed to the deterioration of the economy, and new priorities arose in everyday life. Support from other people was considered to be an important component to cope with the difficult situation. Many parents also sought spiritual support and comfort in religion, which in turn helped them find and feel hope. Conclusion: Through greater knowledge and understanding, the nurse can support the parents through the different feelings that can arise when the child becomes ill with cancer.

Background Child maltreatment has increased over the past years. There is no direct relation-ship between child maltreatment and the actual living condition of the children. All children should be protected against all types of physical, mental and sexual abuse. It is of great im-portance that nurses have knowledge of how to report when they suspected child maltreatment. Aim The aim was to describe nurses´ experiences of reporting when child maltreatment is sus-pected. Methods A method to contribute to evidence-based nursing with ground in analysis of qualita-tive research was performed. In this study nine qualitative articles were analyzed. Results From the analysis three main themes were identified; a difficult task, need of support and create a holistic view of children. Seven subthemes were identified; manage their own lack of knowledge, uncertainty and fear, trust their judgment and courage to act, protection of children's safety and well-being, support from colleagues and management, interact with child protection services, strengthen trust with related parents of the child and environment affecting children. Conclusion Conclusions that can be deduced from this study are to highlight the need for support and knowledge of how a report is conducted. Consequences to not report child maltreat-ment is described in this study as well as which benefits a report of child maltreatment may give for both children and close relatives.

    Abstract [en]

The case based learning (CBL) is a problem-based learning which engaging students and presenting them with learning-related and cognitive challenges. The purpose of the study was to elucidate nursing students experiences of the CBL as an educational tool in order to find out if it supports their learning. Qualitative content analysis was used and performed on the statements from nursing students’ course evaluations. Students perceived the CBL as an approach combining theory with practice which provides an overview of upcoming profession. Students gain adequate knowledge about patient care in reality and thereby enabling them to obtain a holistic understanding of patients health problems. Reflections related to case seminars widen students perspectives, improve their capacity for cooperation and help them to achieve long-lasting knowledge. This learning method offers nursing students an opportunity to enhance their judgment and critical thinking skills by applying theory in practice. Students gain adequate knowledge about patient care which may benefit patient care due to students acting professionally in their future role.

Working with Manchester triage: job satisfaction in nursing2014In: International Emergency Nursing: Oral abstracts – 1st Global Conference on Emergency Nursing & Trauma Care: Dublin, Ireland, 18–21 September 2014, Elsevier, 2014, Vol. 22, no 4, p. 254-254Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: This study covers nurses' job satisfaction during triage at emergency departments in Western Sweden. Method: Data were collected from 74 triage nurses using a questionnaire containing 37 short form open questions. The answers were analysed descriptively and by measuring the covariance. Two open questions were analysed by content analysis. Results: The results showed a high degree of job satisfaction (88%). Triage as a method, the interesting nature of the work, and a certain freedom in connection with the triage tasks contributed to job satisfaction (R2 = 0.40). The nurses found their work interesting and stimulating, although some reported job dissatisfaction due to a heavy workload and lack of competence. Most of the nurses thought that Manchester Triage System (MTS) was a clear and straightforward method but in need of development. One result from the content analysis was difficulties in decision-making during the assessment of patients with multiple diseases. Since this patient group had increased in number, greater demands were placed on the nurses' competence. Conclusions: The rational modelling structure by which the triage method is constructed is unable to distinguish all the parameters that an experienced nurse takes into account. When the model is allowed to take precedence over experience, it can be of hindrance and contribute to certain estimates not corresponding with the patient's needs. The participants requested regular exercises solving and discussing patient scenarios, which can contribute to develop the instrument.

Nurses working with Manchester triage: The impact of nursing experience on patient safety2012In: Australasian Emergency Nursing Journal, ISSN 1574-6267, Vol. 15, no 2, p. 100-107Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

There is in Sweden an ongoing debate about the extent to which the practice of triage contributes to patient safety. This paper reports the findings of a study of nurses’ perceptions of the impact of experience and safety of the Manchester Triage System (MTS) within emergency departments in Western Sweden.

    Methods

Data was collected from 74 triage nurses using a questionnaire containing 37 short form questions of Likert-type, analyzed descriptively and measured the covariance. Data was also collected with two open questions by using the critical incident technique and content analysis.

    Results

The results described that the combination of the MTS method, the nurses’ experience and organizational factors accounted for 65% of patient safety. The study indicated that nurses’ experience contributed to higher patient safety than the model itself. A standardized assessment model, like MTS, can rarely capture all possible symptoms, as it will always be constrained by a limited number of keywords and taxonomies. It cannot completely replace the skills an experienced nurse develops over many years in the profession.

    Conclusions

The present study highlights the value of triage nurse's experience. The participants considered experience to contribute to patient safety in emergency departments. A standardized triage model should be considered as additional support to the skills an experienced nurse develops.

Frail Older Persons' Experiences of Information and Participation in Hospital Care2019In: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, ISSN 1661-7827, E-ISSN 1660-4601, Vol. 16, no 16, article id E2829Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to describe frail older persons' experiences of hospital care of information and participation when being an inpatient at a hospital. A qualitative method was used. Data were collected at the hospital from 20 interviews with frail older patients, together with observations in the environment at the hospital ward. A content analysis was performed. Patients experienced not receiving information about their care and rehabilitation, or receiving such information in noisy surroundings. They experienced situations of misunderstanding related to their medication, which indicates the need for appropriate discharge calls for frail older patients. They expressed feelings of distress concerning the future, caused by hasty admissions or relatives' problems to handle the situation. The results highlight the need to receive appropriate information and to participate in decision-making. The level of health literacy should be taken notice of when giving information, using peaceful and quiet environments when informing frail older persons. Person-centered care should be recognized to a greater extent in order for healthcare professionals to give information to frail older people in a health literacy-friendly way. This might make it easier for frail older persons to participate in a partnership in care.

    Abstract [en]

Background: About 26 500 people suffer from stroke each year – in Sweden. Stroke affects the possibilities of living life the way a person wants to live it. Common disabilities after stroke are paralysis, aphasia and fatigue. Following these physical disabilities are psychological struggles like depression, anxiety, loss of self-confidence and loss of identity. Person-centered care therefore is an important part of caring for people suffering from stroke. Focus on the person's own perception of health and world view in stroke care promotes a better basis for rehabilitation. Aim: The aim of this study was to highlight people's experiences of life after a stroke. Method: In this study a method to contribute to evidence-based nursing based on analysis of qualitative research was used. Ten articles were analyzed from which 3 main themes and 10 subthemes emerged. Results: The results showed difficulties in continuing a normal life as possible after stroke. Numerous factors such as support from family, friends and support in rehabilitation given from several healthcare actors were seen as very supporting through the difficult time that followed after stroke. Findings do however suggest that the support from the different healthcare actors was too weak or too little. This caused problems in rehabilitation and several psycological issues such as depression, anxiety and low self confidence. Conclusion: Stroke causes serious changes in lifestyle and daily living for the affected person(s).

Att leva med HIV: En litteraturbaserad studie om patienters upplevelser av vårdpersonalens bemötande2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a disease, which often is associated with stigma in both society and healthcare. People living with HIV are in need of a continuous contact with the healthcare, which causes problems if the healthcare professionals don´t have sufficient knowledge about HIV. Even though the nurse is obligated to provide equal care to all patients, it's known that patients with HIV don't get the same care as everyone else, which causes suffering among these patients. The aim of this study was to illuminate how patients living with HIV experience the treatment by healthcare professionals. This is a literature-based study and the selected method was a qualitative analysis after Friberg (2012). The data was collected through both systematic and unsystematic searches, which resulted in ten articles. The result was formed into three themes: "The feeling of barriers in healthcare", "The feeling of being unclean" and "To feel safe in care". The conclusion of this study was that the healthcare professionals´ lack of knowledge is the most common reason why patients living with HIV experience poor treatment. Therefore, the writers of this study suggests that education for the healthcare professionals would make the treatment more positive.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Anorexia Nervosa is a mental illness of which the result is a will-controlled weight loss. It is an illness that affects the entire body and can become life-threatening. The illness is most common in young women and is often developed because of a stressful life event, stressful family relationships or sexual abuse. The disease also has a heredity of 50-90% in all cases. Aim: The aim of this study is to describe how nurses can involve the family in the care of a patient with Anorexia Nervosa. Method: The method used in this study was a literary survey based on ten articles of both qualitative and quantitative type. The articles were analysed using the method of Friberg (2012b). Result: Three main themes were created: Building relationships, providing education and preparing for home. Conclusion: The result of this study shows that the involvement of the family in the care of a patient with Anorexia Nervosa has improved conditions of recovery. Nurses have a crucial role in this process by creating relationships, having an educational role and preparing both patient and family for the return home.

Transpersoners upplevelser av mötet med vården: en litteraturstudie2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, it is prohibited to discriminate because of transgender identity or expression. However, research shows that transgender people often face discrimination in society including the health care sector. The aim of this work is to increase the understanding of the transgender experience in the meeting with caregivers. In the study some basic concepts are reviewed, such as different ways of defining sex. Sexuality, transgender, gender identity and expression are defined and discussed and the transgender health situation is described. As theoretical basis the term life world is introduced. The problem statement shows that transgender people are largely suffering from mental illness and that they, because of the risk of being offended or badly treated, refrain from seeking medical care. The methodology used in the study is a literature review of previously conducted qualitative research in the field. This research is compiled into a new entirety with the intent to increase the understanding of the phenomenon and translate it into practical knowledge in health care work. The result of the literature review of the transgender experience when meeting with health care can be summarized in three main groups: Standing outside the norm, Getting inadequate care and Being discriminated. In conclusion, the results indicate that the conception that there are only two genders together with the heteronormativity prevent transgender to get a good treatment and adequate care. The result and the method are discussed in the report.

    Abstract [en]

Background: The number of children abused in Sweden has increased in last years. All children have the right to live a safe life and receive a good development during their upbringing. It is important that the child's basic needs are met for the child to have a good development. Being a victim of child abuse can lead to enormous consequences in the future for the child's physical and mental health.

Aim: This study aimed to illuminate the nurse's experiences in suspected child maltreatment

Method: A literature study based on analysis of qualitative studies according to Friberg´s five step model.

Results: The results of the studies showed that responding and helping children who live in child abuse was a difficult task for the nurses to perform. The nurses were aware of their obligation to maintain the child's safety. The nurses described the basis of their experience that they encountered personal and work-related obstacles to be able to identify, remedy and report when children were suspected of being abused. The result is presented under three themes. The first theme highlights how nurses are emotionally affected. The second theme is about experiences about collaboration with other authorities. The third theme describes the nurses' need for professional development.

Conclusion: The nurses should be able to give the child the right care to ensure the safety of the child and be able to give advice to the child's family. A prerequisite for providing adequate nursing needs nurses have good health science knowledge.

Viljan att göra gott: Sjuksköterskors upplevelse av palliativ sedering i livets slutskede2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative sedation is common in palliative care and a controversial act of treatment when life sustaining treatment is no longer effective. Instead the patient is offered medical treatment to ease the pain and uphold quality of life. Nurses have an important role in providing care, being supportive and establishing a meaningful relationship with the patient and relatives.

Aim: The aim was to illuminate the experiences of registered nurses regarding palliative sedation in the final stages of the life of the patient.

Method: A literature review has been conducted on ten scientific articles approaching the matter from a qualitative perspective.

Results: The result revealed the following themes: The desire of doing well, the lack of influence, to maintain the patient´s independence, difficulties in finding a proper balance and having limited knowledge.

Conclusion: The nurses all shared the common view that withdrawing the treatment and giving palliative sedation were considered morally acceptable, if the patient showed signs of suffering and pain. The nurses also agreed on the importance of maintaining the patient´s right to decide when to deny further life-upholding treatment. Sometimes the nurses experienced their profession as challenging because of the doctors´ negligence of nurse's opinions about care and treatment. Many nurses also found it difficult in being fully professional when affected on an emotional level, by the patient. Another important aspect was the lack of knowledge in caring for the patient in the final stages of life, which could result in dissatisfying care work.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Violence against women is a major global public health issue, which has an impact on women’s lives and mental health. Aim: To explore healthcare experiences of women exposed to intimate partner violence.

Method: Literature based study with eleven qualitative studies. Results: The women who sought help felt ashamed for the violence and most of them didn’t get the help they needed. They felt that the caregivers didn’t believe in their stories or their experiences. The health care professionals made them feel like objects and not human beings. Few women had a good experience of the care they were given, in those cases the caregivers had asked the women about the violence and gave them time to talk and made them feel safe and comfortable.

Conclusion: Nearly all of the women had feelings of shame and guilt. They wanted the caregiver to ask them about the violence, because they found it hard to reveal it themselves. Caregivers need more knowledges about intimate partner violence and its impact on the women to offer right kind of help. They also need guidelines to know how to meet and help these women.

Partnervåld: Att belysa sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att möta kvinnor som utsatts för partnervåld.2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Intimate partner violence is a structural problem in our society because of the inequality between men and women. Nurses are often the first person to meet the abused woman in health care and therefore have an important role in identifying the violence and in trying to influence the women's future choices in life.

Aim: To illustrate nurses' experiences of meeting women exposed to partner violence.

Method: A literature-based study based on analysis of 10 qualitative scientific articles.

Results: Nurses meeting women subjected to partner violence experienced a lot of emotions both at work and in private. They experienced that the lack of time in care was crucial to how they were able to respond to the women. According to the nurses, lack of training and knowledge were the main reasons to why they refrained from posing questions on experiences of violence. Fear, frustration, suffering and the feeling of not being able to perform good care affected the well-being of the nurses.

Conclusion: Knowledge about the topic and time for the healthcare encounter are crucial for nurses to create trustworthy relationships and provide a good care for women subjected to partner violence. Importantly, the findings in this study show that time and knowledge are the major barriers in the care of these women.
