Sveriges bostadsmarknad i kölvattnet av Coronapandemin: En jämförelse med tidigare kriser2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a report regarding the housing market’s development during the pandemic of Corona. Sweden has been in economic crises before and the fact that serious crises affect households, companies and the welfare are unequivocally. Despite that the pandemic of Corona has resulted in a downward going economy, the media has reported that more and more habitants of Sweden have a wish to buy a new home. The purpose of the study is to investigate and analyze, with the help of earlier financial crises, research, and economic theories how the pandemic of Corona has affected the housing market of Sweden. From a quantitative method, earlier essays, and data from 1981 to 2020 have been analyzed. Using statistics collected from SCB and a regression analysis we have been able to add up earlier studies with our study. The dependent variable “property price index” that shows the development for the housing market (the variable includes houses intended for permanent resident, condominiums as well as apartment-houses) has together with the independent variables such as Sweden’s population, mortgage rate, income, new constructions, GDP, and unemployment been the subjects for the regression analysis that has been made. The result we got showed that all variables except constructions had a high degree of explanation and by the help of this result we were able to answer ourquestions of issue whether how Sweden has been affected by the pandemic of Corona but also by earlier financial crises. The conclusion we came to was that the pandemic of Corona had a positive influence on the property prices and that the pandemic has not had the same impact as financial crises that has occurred. Other crises have affected the finance more at another level than the pandemic of Corona.

Vad förklarar skillnaden i skolbetyg mellan svenska kommuner?: Det genomsnittliga slutbetyget årskurs 92021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The grade differences between the municipalities are large, one municipality has students who perform at the top lever while other municipalities have students who peform significantly worse. According to the National Agency for Education, there must be several contributing factors to this, including segregation and the students parents level of education. This essay examines what explains the grade differences between the municipalities in Sweden. The method that has been used is OLS regression with data taken from the National Agency for Education from 2018/2019 with final grades from year 9. The results showed that the factor that affected students grades the most was the parents level of education, ie students whose parents have studied after high school. As previous studies have shown similar results, it was no surprise that we got this result. As there is great segregation between the municipalities, the conclusion is that the municipalities that have students whose parents have high level of education succeed best with their studies. This also results in the socio-economic factor being the biggest reason why there are such high differences in grades between the municipalities.

Investmentbankernas avstånd från insolvens: En analys av USA:s investmentbanker fram till och efter finanskrisen 2008.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Financial crises in USA 2008 is seen as one of the worst crises in the last ninety years. Financial crises went hard on the American economy and abroad as a whole. Pressures under both administrations and rising house prices was one factor that led to the burst of house bubble in 2008. America has today eight financial institution seen as systemically important banks globally and holds a big market share in the US market. If one of these institution goes closer against bankruptcy, it can jeopardize the US and world economy as well. This thesis aims to analyze how the largest and systemically important investment banks operations could affect their distance from insolvency. With the data that is available, one has constructed and used a panel data to see and calculated Z-Score, with Z-Score as dependent and six independent variables over a time period of 17 years. In the panel regression the results show that comparing mean of Z-Score and predicted Z-Score, the values are similar and both follows a trend. This indicates that model used in thesis, belongs with Z-Score. The result showed that Z-Score for some banks were lower than normally under the financial crisis.

An investigation on the relationship between accrual-based earning management and Chief Financial Officer's market-based compensation in EU listed companies2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Accounting and finance literature have found that compensation package of an executives can be the motivation behind the engagement of earnings management. The study attempts to investigate the Chief Financial Officer as an executive since majority of research has been primarily focused on the top executive, the Chief Executive Officer. The CFO was chosen because their responsibilities which includes the overseeing the financial reporting. Specifically, the paper examined whether there is any relationship between the CFO's market-based compensation and accrual-based earning management. Using a sample of 54 European Union listed companies, the paper studies the effect on CFO's market-based executive compensation on earnings management using OLS regression models. The results show no significant relationship between CFO's marketbased compensation and earning management. Therefore, the findings are inconsistent with evidence found in prior research papers.

131 Days to Form a Government: How was the government formation process represented according to the editorial sections in two liberal newspapers, Dagens Nyheter and Göteborgs-Posten after the election 2018?2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The 131 days that followed after the election is the longest period in Sweden without forming a new government. This period highlighted the inherent tension among liberal editors. The aim of this thesis is to delineate and compare how two Swedish liberal newspapers, Dagens Nyheter (DN) and Göteborgs-Posten (GP), represents this turbulent period in the editorial sections. In order to conduct our research, we analysed articles from the editorial sections with an own constructed analytical framework. During the research we identified three time periods that are characterized by the three phases of cultural shock described in the theory of Winkelman. Within these time periods we analysed three questions that we based on the "What's the Problem Represented to be?" approach by Bacchi. The analysis will show that both newspapers acted according to Winkelman's theory with a varying degree. In the reaction period both newspapers show disappointment and frustration but identifies different problems and causes. Both newspapers show a positive attitude in the reorientation period, they both presents solutions on how to maximize the liberal impact, however the solutions differ. In the adaptation period both editorial sections are adjusting to the new reality, they both call the outcome second best, but GP have a harder time accepting this outcome compared to DN. Our interpretation of the results is that due to their different liberal standpoint they identify different problems, causes and solutions. The newspaper's editorial sections argue that there is a new political reality, but they interpret the new reality in a different way.

Amorteringskravets påverkan på bostadsmarknaden i Lidingö kommun: Vad hade amorteringskravet för påverkan på bostadsrättspriser i Lidingö kommun?2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper will examine how house prices have been affected by the amortizing requirement. The paper will be limited to co-operative apartments in Lidingö municipality during the time period between 2013 and 2020. Studies done previously have mixed opinions about whether the amortizing requirements has affected the house prices or not.The studies tell us that the amortizing requirement has a negative effect on house prices but they do not agree on how much the requirement actually does affect the house prices. Some studies say that amortizing requirement have close to no effect on house prices and some studies say it has affected house prices. In this paper we have performed an ordinary least square regression where we have used SEK/sqm as our dependent variable. The reason for that is to be able to see if the price of co-operative apartments has been affected. We use SEK/sqm because the apartments have got different sizes. In this study the conclusion is that we cannot determine whether the amortizing requirement has had any impact on the house prices. Keywords: Amortizing requirement, Lidingö, Apartm

Kartläggning av interna transporter på Volvo Penta i Vara2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Volvo Penta is manufacturing boat engines and is located in the city of Vara, 100 kilometers northeast of Gothenburg. The company is a part of Volvo Group and has approximately 200 employees in Vara.

This thesis is based on mapping of internal traffic with trucks due to the factory has been rebuilt and the business has grown. The aim of the thesis is to give an understanding of how the current transport flows functions today and to present suggestions on how the flows can be streamlined. The target of the thesis is to identify and to map out the internal transport flows from incoming goods to different stock locations and also the transport flow between stock locations within the factory. The mapping also includes empty transports, transport of empty containers and waste transports.

The data for the mapping was collected by the help of three truck drivers. The drivers filled out a survey of their transport routs during five working days. The survey presented information about what sort of transport that has been performed and between which stock locations they drove. Compiled information shows examples of the proportions between empty transports, transport of empty containers and waste transports. The compiled information of the three drivers also shows the distance of each transport per day. In order to gain a greater understanding of the analyzed transport flow, interviews have been done with the drivers. Also a benchmarking was made at Nevs in Trollhättan to give an idea of how to improve material flows.

The result of the mapping shows that stock location and material are widely spread throughout different locations within the factory. Further the results also shows that the empty transports are common and often being performed over a long distance. Results also shows that some materials are stock positioned far away from their using points. Considering waste transport the results shows that long transports are needed.

In the future it is suggested that Volvo Penta in Vara changes the stock locations within the factory in order to reduce the number of material and empty transports. Further a new layout with a centralized stock location is suggested in order to shorten the transports and reduce the workload for the truck drivers. Other suggestions are to locate stock positions closer to their using source and to site waste stations closer to pick up points.

Vad driver de svenska småhuspriserna?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors affect the Swedish real estate prices of small house dwellings, and if so, how and to what extent. With the use of earlier studies, that coherently claims mortgage rate and household disposable income to be the most valuable factors to explain the Swedish real estate prices, this study will consider additional determinant factors with the respect to a stock-flow model. 1993-2013 time series data will be tested for unit roots and cointegration before its run in a regression as an "Error Correction Model", which considers both long- and short run equilibrium. The result confirms the short run rate and disposable income as two determinant key factors when it comes to explaining the long run Swedish housing prices, together with other factors such as GDP, household debt and unemployment rate. In the short run, the historical development of housing prices act as a key determinant, but disposable income, short term rate, GDP and household debt are also important explanatory factors. The study shows that the increased income, and the ability to increase household spending, will be reflected in the housing prices. A low loan rate will concurrently make it possible for more households than ever to loan at a market with an already very restricted housing supply

Ideology Convergence Within The Alliance Coalition In Sweden.: A critical case study of the similarities and differences between the non-socialistic parties in Sweden, 2002 and 2010.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The ideological similarities between political parties in Europe are increasing which makes the future of politics unsure. We know from previous coalition research that parties which is ideologically similar to each other are more likely to form a coalition than parties with large ideological differences. Thus there is a lack of research which analyses ideology convergence within coalitions. The aim of this study is to examine the ideological convergence within the Alliance coalition in Sweden by analysing the differences and similarities before and after the Alliance creation in 2004. This study will investigate the political parties' liberal ideology convergence according to two ideal types, social liberalism and neoliberalism. This thesis are studying if and how the parties within the non-socialist Alliance coalition in Sweden, which ruled between 2006 and 2014, adjusted their ideology to each other in order to govern successfully. With a social constructivist approach, a textual content analysis of election manifestos from 2002 and 2010 will analyse the possible ideology convergence of the Alliance coalition. The result of this study is that two out of four parties made an ideology convergence when entering the coalition which made Social Liberalism to be the dominated ideology. With the use of Downs (1957) centripetal pattern a conclusion was drawn regarding stable long run coalitions in general. The Alliance coalition has demonstrated that parties within stable long run coalitions tend to converge their ideology towards the parties in the middle of the ideological spectrum. In the end, this thesis comes to the conclusion that parties which enters a stable, long run coalition and converge towards the middle as the Alliance coalition, risks to lose votes to new extreme parties which arises from the edges of the ideological spectrum.

Securing the Arctic: A comparative study of mainstream media representation of the securitization of the Arctic in Norway and Canada2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to describe and compare how the securitization of the Arctic is represented in mainstream media of Norway and Canada. As two Arctic nations part of the likeminded group in international relations it is interesting to see how national media frames respective nations’ Arctic interests and strategy. Based on securitization and framing theory this thesis identifies themes and trends surrounding the Arctic by using three different security concepts: economic security, traditional security and environmental security. The data for study will be in total 189 full-text articles from both nations’ mainstream media, where search terms relating to a security grammar will be used. A qualitative content analysis will be employed on articles from Norwegian media, specifically Aftenposten, and Canadian media, The Globe and Mail. The analysis will show that both Norwegian and Canadian mainstream media thematically framed the securitization of the Arctic predominantly through the same security concepts. Yet there were differences in relation to attitudes towards Arctic securitization where Canadian media showed a more assertive disposition towards other nations involvement. Norwegian media, on the other hand was more inclined towards regional cooperation.

The Role of Local E-government for Satisfied Citizens: Towards Sustainable Development?2015In: Uddevalla Symposium 2015. Regional Development in an International Context. Regional, National, Cross Border and International Factors for Growth and Development: Revised papers presented at the 18th Uddevalla Symposium, 11-13 June, Sönderborg, Denmark / [ed] Iréne Bernhard, Trollhättan: University West , 2015, p. 141-153Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this paper is to study the role of local e-government regarding citizens view of municipality service, information and accessibility to municipality service. The main hypothesis was that municipalities with high degree of pro-activity regarding e-government are municipalities with high degree of satisfied citizens. Satisfaction among citizens was studied by using a national survey which is performed twice ever year. The survey normally includes roughly 130 municipalities out of the 290 municipalities in Sweden. The number of randomly selected individuals per municipality is usually 600 in smaller municipalities and 1200 in larger municipalities. In this study we focus on the following dimensions: Overall satisfaction, Satisfaction with response and accessibility and Satisfaction with influence and confidence. The results implies that e-government and satisfied citizens are correlated. The correlations between the e-variables: e-proactivity, e-strategy, e-information/transparency, e-interaction were all significantly correlated to the satisfaction indices. The correlations were generally of medium strength, i.e. around 0.2-0.4. There were no significant correlations between in real life interactions, strategy for democracy and the satisfaction indices.

    Abstract [en]

Universities need to constantly accommodate new forms of collaboration with society. Interaction with and impacts on society and practice are of crucial importance. University West (UW) in Sweden has a profile area in work-integrated learning (WIL), which generally aims to address issues on integrating theory and practice in a coherent and sustainable way. In this paper we base our arguments on a research education (third-cycle) in informatics with specialization in work-integrated learning. The aim with the paper is to evaluate UW’s research education and research environment from a WIL perspective. We will adopt an informing science model in order to conduct a current state analysis, in which we identify and visualize collaboration activities within and between the research education/environment and the UWs key stakeholders; society/practices, research community and PhD students. Concrete implications show how collaboration and informing flows are connected and how they can be improved. General reflections are given on the model as a useful means for quality development and assurance beyond learning outcomes, including aspects of collaboration and interaction that can be regarded as paths of societal and practical impacts.

Conceptualizing University-Society Collaboration: A Literature Review Focusing on Drivers of Collaboration2018In: ICERI2018 Proceedings, 2018, p. 9036-9042Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Collaboration and learning are vital for development in all sectors of society and there is a constant need for new ideas, innovation and development. Crucial for dealing with contemporary complex challenges on a local, regional, national and global scale is a need for the inclusion of many perspectives and competences. However, collaboration is never friction free but challenging. A reason for this might be that there are different expectations on goals and outcomes due to that collaborating organizations bring different contexts, Inter-organisational collaborations, cultures, traditions etc. These challenges are addressed by several approaches for university-society collaboration, e.g. Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), University-Industry-Government (Triple-helix), University Community Partnership (UCP), and Public Private Academic Partnership (PPAP). These are all aiming at planning, performing, compiling and leveraging knowledge exchange and co-creating sustainable results. What is less developed is what genuine impact such results do have on society, i.e. societal impacts. Thus, there is a need for gaining more knowledge in research about what key mechanisms that constitutes successful collaboration between academia and various public and private organizations in research projects. This conceptual paper explores the underlying concepts of principles that are used as guidelines for successful university-society collaboration. It draws on a literature review of key concepts selected from established frameworks and models that are current in the field of university-society collaboration, e.g. co-creation, trust, relationship building. The aim of the paper is to gain deeper insights in the complex dynamics of research collaboration by combining previous models with current research literature and suggest implications for both model development as well as principles of conduct when societal impact are to be ensured in university-society collaboration. Hence, the research questions to be addressed in this paper are: What are the key concepts that underlie the dynamics of university-society collaboration in the research literature? How can successful university-society collaboration be conceptualized in order to facilitate co-creation and societal impact?

Degree of Digitalization and Citizen Satisfaction: A Study of the Role of Local e-Government in Sweden2018In: Electronic Journal of e-Government, E-ISSN 1479-439X, Vol. 16, p. 59-71Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim was to investigate whether there is a relationship between degree of e-government in Swedish municipalities and perceived satisfaction among citizens generally. This is a large-scale quantitative study based on validand reliable Swedish national surveys. Based on these surveys, a new comprehensive index for measuring "degree of digitalization" was constructed. Citizen satisfaction was measured using established indices covering three dimensions:satisfaction with living in the municipality, satisfaction with performance of government activities (delivered services), and satisfaction with transparency and influence. The results show that there is a relationship between the degree of digitalization in a municipality and the perceived satisfaction among its citizens. The degree of digitalization is related to all three dimensions of citizen satisfaction. Additionally, this study indicates that the strength of this relationship is in parity with or even stronger than the relationship between citizen satisfaction and other crucial factors such as educational level and median income

This thesis aims to add knowledge to recent changes in representation of black and white fictional presidents, how they differ from one another and from the ideal presidential traits. The ideal presidential traits are based on previous research on real-life presidents and will provide the basis for the analytical framework that has been developed for this study. In order to fulfill this aim we have constructed a comparative case study that compares films from the second half of the 1990s with films from the 2010s. The films from each time period contains one white and one black fictional presidents and are all part of the action genre. The study shows that while fictional presidents in the 1990s were focused on politics the fictional presidents of today are instead created to be characters of action films with much less emphasis on the politics. Despite this change black fictional presidents have moved closer to the ideal traits while white fictional presidents have moved further away from them. White presidents have become more aggressive and unable to control themselves while the black presidents are now shown as funny characters with a more profane language than previously

Combining pedagogical strategies and ICT support for fostering the digitalized agentic learner2017In: INTED2017 Proceedings, 2017, p. 1433-1441Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Higher education is facing exceptional challenges due to an increased complexity on the labour market. The work life of today is highly specialized and demands continuous education, i.e. lifelong learning. Higher education must focus on developing competencies for work life, beyond traditional theoretical knowledge [1]. To cater for these demands, higher education must adopt more application-oriented and trans-disciplinary research [2]. Moreover, colleges and universities could more systematically take responsibility for career development and adjust curricula for both traditional and non-traditional students [3]. A crucial question to address is how higher education could foster a student to become a “lifelong learner”? From a pedagogical perspective, it is of course vital to teach a student how to learn [4], aiming at achieving the skill to become a self-directed learner. Interestingly, it is argued that the qualities for being a proactive and agentic learner in higher education are the very same abilities required for effective professional practice [5]. We need to use educational strategies, e.g. work-integrated learning (WiL), as a part of the preparation of becoming an agentic learner, that permit them to successfully negotiate, engage and learn from what they are afforded, for both personal and professional outcomes [6]. Furthermore, we need to adopt important key factors that support fostering agentic learners [7].

In parallel to pedagogical strategies and key factors, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) could play an important role for continuous learning [8-10]. Research shows that over the recent years, social media has been pointed out as a tool, not only for external communication, but also for informal learning within organizations [11-14].

In this paper we wish to suggest a combination where important pedagogical strategies are combined with ICT-support. Moreover, we wish to suggest a strategy for how this combination could be practiced in higher education, making the transfer to work life smoother.

We acknowledge that students of today most often have good knowledge of the use of various digital tools such as Facebook, Youtube etc. This is however often constrained to the use of various platforms and tools for entertainment and social contacts. How these tools can be used for learning portfolios, both during their studies and for lifelong learning, is less known and used. We suggest that students during their education choose digital tools based on individual preferences and build a personal learning environment (PLE) [15]. The PLE should include “open tools”, such tools are available outside closed systems within organizations, in order to be useful also after graduation. The student has the possible to develop and re-use knowledge of tools and platforms to work in the new context, working life. However, the use of a PLE will not in itself do the trick.

Portfolio is one of many tools to assess learning. When the digital development progressed and applications on the Internet has expanded, the portfolio characteristics can be changed to the e-portfolio [16]. We advocate that both teachers and student need support for developing pedagogical strategies that optimize the use of ICT and aims at fostering agentic learners. We suggest that an e-portfolio may constitute such a joint support.

In this paper we will show that an e-portfolio and PLE can support important factors for fostering agentic learners who in an efficient way take advantage of modern ICT. In sum, we suggest an approach for fostering “digitalized agentic learners”.

Effekter som uppkommer vid belöning med finansiella och icke-finansiella medel: En kvalitativ fallstudie av en bank2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this case study we have examined what effects financial and non-financial rewards have on the employees in a bank. Financial rewards can be either a movie ticket or a monetary bonus. These rewards can thus be both in monetary founds and various benefits. Non-financial rewards consists rewards as a "pat on the back", kind words from the manager and symbolic rewards. The basis of a reward system is that it is accessible for all employees in the company, whereas good communication between the manager, the management and the employees is needed. Furthermore, it is important that both the allocation of duties and the payment of the rewards is fair. Theories that has been discussed is the Pyramid of Needs, the Two Factor Theory and the Expectancy Theory. The first two theories describe the different needs that the employees may have. The Pyramid of needs is based on five basic needs of the employees. The Two Factor Theory discusses the internal and external factors that may occur in the workplace for the employees' satisfaction and motivation. The Expectancy Theory discusses the expectation that may arise among employees in the connection with a reward. It is not always easy for the management to access the knowledge that the employee possess. Without rewards as motivation the employees tend to only do as much as need within their work description. In this bank it was important that the management motivated their employees, which could be done with either financial or non-financial rewards. A financial reward that the employees can take part of is the profit-sharing on employment level. Non-financial rewards in the bank could be a "pat on the back" or a kind word from the manager. A reward may encourage and enable the employees to focus on the goals that the company wants to reach. The purpose of this case study was to examine the effects resulting from rewarding with financial or non-financial recourses. The empirical material was gathered at a bank in western Sweden. This, together with the theoretical framework, resulted in in-depth analyses which subsequently lead to some conclusions. The conclusions we drew where that group rewards was the best way to reward in the bank, smaller competitions that were rewarded individually could be used to motivate employees' with the purpose to encourage for their accomplishments. Finally, it was concluded that the effects that arises with reward system are fairness, communication, motivation, needs and expectations. These effects consist with both positive and negative aspects that the management has to be aware of in order to adjust the reward system to fit their company and their employees

Reflecting 'Reality': Ownerships impact on framing news media content2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Ownership in media have according to previous studies a central role of what content that is produced. Interests of owners have been shown in the actual media content, interests such as economic and ideological agendas. Financial contributors can have an impact on media content.

To examine if ownership matters, the comparison is of two news outlets both on the conservative side, where one is independent, and the other is owned by a political party. The news outlets are Samtiden and Svenska Dagbladet. To analyze the news reports, the chosen frames of unemployment, cultural values and crime were examined to understand how the news outlets frame 'reality' and how ownership matters in that context.

This thesis aims to compare the framing of media content of two newspapers, one owned by a political party (Samtiden, owned by the Sweden Democrats) and one privately owned (Svenska Dagbladet).

The thesis concludes that the framing of 'reality' in Samtiden is about foreign-born being a threat to the Swedish society. 'Reality' is framed in SvD as a secular, equal society with some challenges. This thesis shows that a newspaper owned by a political party frames 'reality' in favor of their political agenda in contrast to an independent newspaper.

Professionals within Emergency Management: A qualitative study on the role of professionals in Swedish emergency management2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis has its starting point in the Swedish emergency management system so to analyse how the role of the professionals has been constructed based on official policies documents. More specifically the aim of this thesis has been to analyse the role of professionals before, and after the reformations of emergency management, with the help of theoretical management doctrines of governance and managerialism. A clear gap has been identified in previous public administration studies, where the effect of reforms on professionals within public administrations has been left out, especially within emergency management. The study is divided into two parts. Firstly, it examines how Swedish emergency management policies have been formulated generally and how they have changed due to reformations. Secondly, when the organizational model is indicated, the role of the professionals has comparatively before and after reformations of emergency management been analysed, in relation to professionals’ autonomy and expertise. The approach of a qualitative comparative case study has been employed, where two cases explicitly have been analysed and compared. The findings of this study have shown that the reformations of emergency management have to some extent shifted the role of the professional towards managerialism values. However, the changes for the professionals have not been very significant.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper we study the performance of twenty mutual funds on the Swedish market for the period 2010-2015. The data on which the study was based on is monthly and therefore include 60 observations for each mutual fund. We use Capital Asset Price Model, Jensen's alpha and the Sharpe ratio to estimate the performance of these funds. In addition to this we also study the relation between fees and performance using correlation coefficient. The result indicates that on average the funds have outperformed the market but it turned out to be non-significant and therefore we cannot rely on that conclusion. We also find a negative relationship between mutual fund fees and their performance, but this result is also non-significant.

Sveriges hushållsskuld: inriktning på finanspolitik och makroekonomiska aspekter2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of the three fiscal policies, interest rate deduction, the mortgage cap and the amortization requirement and what their effect has been on the household debt in Sweden. Have the policies resulted in the desired effect that the authorities were trying to achieve? To further investigate what is affecting the household debt, the report also answers a secondary issue in which a study of macroeconomic aspects is in focus.

To answer the purpose of this empirical essay, OLS regressions on a selection of relevant variables has been performed. The purpose of the regressions is to see how much the impact of the various fiscal measures and macroeconomic conditions has affected our dependent variable, the household debt. The time intervals examined in the report are 1981 – 2016 for the fiscal measures and 1996-2018 for the macroeconomic. Based on these findings and other facts, a conclusion has been made.

The conclusion that can be made is that the fiscal policies have had a certain effect on house prices and thus the debt ratio. However, it cannot be determined that these measures solely affect the debt ratio. There are probably additional variables that also affect, that we believe are embedded in the macroeconomic aspects. This conclusion is based on the fact, that the macroeconomic aspects have a certain degree of explanation of the household debt. However, it is also possible to see clear indications and trends that support the thesis we have chosen to answer regarding the fiscal measures and their impact on household debt.

    Abstract [en]

The prices on the Swedish housing market have been growing with an positive trend for the past 30 years. Because of the rising house prices the housing market is a debated topic in many ways. The same trend has been seen in the regional markets in Sweden, like in the municipality of Borås and Gothenburg. In this paper we will therefore examine which factors that have been affecting the housing prices in the municipality of Gothenburg and Borås between 1999 and 2018. Previous articles and studies have been complied in order to create an econometric model adapted to our choice of subject. To distinguish the constant difference in the house prices of the municipalities we included a dummy variable in the equation. Before running OLS-regressions we tested our collected data for various problems that may arise and produce a misleading result. Multicollinearity arose. Therefore we decided to merge the variable supply and population to a new variable called "overcrowding". The results of this paper showed that 99,6 percent of the variation in the independent variables can explain the growth in house prices in Gothenburg and Borås. We then moved forward to study the independent variables separately. The results, which also answered the research question of this paper, showed that income, unemployment, interest rate, overcrowding and the dummy variable Municipality can explain the changes in the house prices. Finally, we concluded the differences in these regional factors have created the differences in house prices.

    Abstract [en]

Actively managed funds are often presented to investors like you and me by most financial institutes. When investing your money in an active managed fund you're paying a higher fee to cover the increased cost due to active management. The fact that higher fees has an impact on the return on capital and that it results in increased revenues to the financial institutes is not argued. Whether the costumer who chooses to pay the higher fees in faith that it will generate a greater return on the investment is often argued. The efficient market hypothesis is a greatly recognized theory in the area of economics that argues that the only variable significant to greater returns are risk. Based on that statement the conclusion that active management of funds will not result in greater return can be made.

In this thesis 16 actively managed funds in Sweden have been analyzed. Data for those funds have been collected for the time period 20150101 – 20191231. In this study measures of performance have been used to evaluate the performance of the actively managed funds by calculating the risk adjusted return. Measures of performance that has been used in the thesis are Sharpe ratio, M2, Treynor ratio and Jensens Alpha. By calculating the risk adjusted return it is possible to decide if the fund has outperformed or underperformed the market. The 16 funds that the analytical part of the thesis is built on have been evaluated individually compared to a market index. Statistical test has been used to analyze the performance of the funds based on the risk adjusted return. Statistical tests that has been used are linear regression and Wilcoxon. Among the funds that was evaluated in the study had only one of the funds outperformed the market. The result confirms both theories in economics and earlier studies in the area. Out of the 16 funds evaluated could only one of the funds be concluded to have outperformed the market.

    Abstract [en]

Household debt has steadily climbing over the past decade and the development of increasing concern. Consumption levels also show a continuing upward trend. Explanation lies part in the consumption financed by households increase their debt ratio to maintain the same level of consumption as before. The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors that affect the household debt ratio at the regional level. Previous studies indicate interest rates, housing prices and disposable income as the factors that have an impact on the debt ratio in Sweden. Although the effects of demographics, the difference in age distribution among regions, can lead to different degrees of household borrowing, accordance within the life cycle hypothesis. Data from 2007 over Sweden's 290 municipalities are estimated in a regression analysis in the form of a cross-sectional regression. The results show that market price coefficient and population age as important factors in explaining the regional debt ratio, together with other factors such as education, the municipalities' size in terms of population and the share acquisitions workers in agriculture, forestry, hunting and fishing.

    Abstract [en]

This paper analyses the discounted free cash flow model to the firm (FCFF) on 50 different companies in the swedish stock market. There are few studies that examine the models relevance when it comes to predicting enterprise value for publicly listed companies, therefore this study aims to fill the gap between the models theoretical framework with its practical use. The aim of this study is to examine if the model’s estimates are closely related to the share price of each company and if the model can be used as an investment tool efficiently for a layman as well as for a professional practitioner. By analysing historical data between 2013-2019 forecasts regarding the free cash flows can be made using the theoretical assumptions from the FCFF-model. The result reveals an imprecise predictability with an absolute prediction error of 75.22%. This study draws the conclusion that the model is better suited for professional practitioners rather than laymen due to its complexity and subjective nature.

Main Drivers of Gold Price and Backtesting for the OptimalGold/US Equity Portfolio2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Due to its unique physical properties, gold has been used as money for thousands of years.Since the collapse of the Bretton Wood system in 1971 however, gold has no official link tothe monetary system. What drives gold prices today and what role the metal should serve inan investment portfolio are highly debated questions. The aim of this report is to bring factsand clarity to this debate. To examine the drivers of gold prices an OLS-regression has beenconducted on the period 1971-2021. From the regression and with the support of graphs and previous literature we concluded that gold is positively correlated with money supply and negatively correlated with real interest rates. In order to study what place gold has in amodern investment portfolio, we have used sharpe ratio as a measure of a portfolio’sefficiency. The ratio was optimized in Excel, and we found that the gold/US equity portfoliowhich had achieved the highest sharpe ratio during our testing period consisted of 5.68% goldand 94.32% S&P 500 TR. We also studied gold’s performance in times of economic crisis and found that gold has worked as a protection against downturns in the stock market.

Definitionen av integration: En intervjustudie av hur nyanlända och deras infödda svenska arbetsgivare definierar begreppet integration2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how native Swedish citizens’ and immigrating Syrian citizens define the concept of integration. To give the definition a practical turn, the interviewees are asked to explain their role in the integration process as well as explaining how they believe the other part in the integration process are defining the concept of integration. Thereby it is possible to understand how both groups define the concept and how they look upon the responsibility distribution in the process. The very aim of the thesis is to compare whether there are any differences in how Swedish citizens’ and immigrating Syrian citizens define the concept of integration.

The thesis is designed as a descriptive, qualitative, comparative study, based on semistructural interviews with strategically selected Swedish citizens’ and immigrating Syrian citizens. It takes its departure in theories of discourse and hermeneutics and it is argued that due to the history of the Swedish integration politics, where integration has been defined in different ways, integration should belong to the category of essentially contested concepts. Four major theoretical definitions of integration are identified - integration as multiculturalism, transculturalism, one-sided preservation of culture, and assimilation – and are used to analyse the answers of the respondents.

The study shows that there is no unified version of a definition for neither of the groups. However, what the both groups has in common is that they initially explain the integration process as a one-sided process; it is the immigrants who should in first hand integrate by learning the structures of the society and the Swedish norms.

THE SWEDEN DEMOCRAT’S IMAGE STRUGGLE: A comparative textual analysis of the differences and similarities in ideological presentation and framing of the Sweden Democrats by Dagens Nyheter2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to analyse what traces there are of social conservatism and right-wing populism in how the Sweden Democrats presents, and Dagens Nyheter frames the Sweden Democrats ideology on immigration issues. The theory chapter explains the ideologies; social conservatism and right-wing populism which are further used in the analysis so as to trace where and how elements of the ideologies are present, or latent, in the research material within the SD’s promotional material and DN’s leading articles of the SD. To reach a result and answer to our research question we perform textual content analysis on the material. The study shows that the presented ideology of the SD differs from how DN frames the ideology. This is evident throughout the analysis as the ‘grey zone’ in which both ideologies coincide are often used by the SD so as to present themselves as social conservative while in the case of DN the ‘grey zone’ actions, statements, and suggestions of the SD are attributed towards right-wing populism.

Våldtäkt i Hollywoods krigsfilmer: Har representationen av orsaken till våldtäkt i krig ändrats i Hollywoods krigsfilmer mellan perioden före 1980-talet och den efter 1980-talet?2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to analyse and describe how the representation of the cause of rape in Hollywood combat movies has changed from the pre-1980's to the post-1980's. By doing this, we will contribute to a deeper understanding of how the perception of rape in society has changed, since the second wave of feminism, which has not been addressed before in studies of rape and media representation of rape. We will provide a description of how the cause of rape is represented in movies using evolutionary theory and social constructionist theory on rape, and compare movies from the pre-1980's and the post-1980's, which is the ending period of feminism's second wave. Film theory is also used in order to show that cinema reflects ideas and norms in society. This study uses a qualitative single case study to describe what causes rape according to Hollywood combat movies. By analysing Hollywood combat movies containing rape and sexual violence from the pre-1980's and the post-1980's, the study shows that the representation of the cause of rape has changed from evolutionary to social constructionist aspects of rape, which reflects how society's perception of the cause of rape has changed.

Forecasting prices of Bitcoin and Google stock with ARIMA vs Facebook Prophet2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis we have presented econometrics and forecasts of Bitcoin and Google (GOOG) prices. We have implemented two models, one traditional, “ARIMA” and a relatively new one, “Prophet model” by using Facebook Prophet (ML). Machine learning is still new in the economic field, it has been rewarding to learn its capability. We have evaluated the model’s performance by using root mean square error (RMSE) and compared the result which model performed better. We wanted to compare to different assets, volatile Bitcoin to considerable stable Google (GOOG), thus investigate our models performance and if they differ or not. Regarding our result, we found that the ARIMA models have the best forecasting ability. We also investigate the impact of rational expectation and its impact on an asset price. We found that announcements on Bitcoin cause a significantly change in price and had an impact on the model’s performance.

What does the 'sustainable' in sustainable mobility stand for?: Framing of sustainability in the sustainable mobility debate in the Bundestag2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation examines sustainable mobility as a policy issue in a debate within the Bundestag. The purpose of this research is to conduct an in-depth analysis of the perspectives towards sustainability in the Bundestag. In practice, we investigate how "sustainability" is represented in the sustainable mobility debate in the Bundestag. This thesis finds that the debate protocol from the sustainable mobility debate in the Bundestag upon analysis revealed the perspectives towards sustainability present in the Bundestag. The two major perspectives we identify are pro-economic and environmentalist respectively. Our empirical results show that the ecological sustainability pillar of the "triple bottom-line" model receives the most attention in the Bundestag. Our analytical framework is a combination of two models; the "What is the problem represented to be?" and "triple bottom-line" approaches. The framework is used in conjunction with a qualitative content analysis from a social constructivist perspective. Our study enables future longitudinal research on this particular case.

Ethnic identity and generalized trust in heterogenous environments: A comparative study in the Gothenburg region2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis has studied two things, the first thing is to see if contact between different ethnic minorities but were the ethnic majority is absent has the same alleged positive effect on generalized trust as contact between ethnic minorities and the ethnic majority. The second issue is to see if people that have contact with people with other ethnic origin than themselves changed their perception of their ethnic identity and if that effects generalized trust. This was done by using theories of social constructivism and social capital were I had an inductive theoretical approach. The research design was comparative research design, comparing heterogeneous environments were there were different ethnic minorities but were the ethnic majority was absent to ethnic heterogeneous environments were there were different ethnic minorities but were the ethnic majority was present using semis structured interviews. What I found out is that contact did in deed effect how people perceived their ethnic identity but not always in the way that the theories suggested that they should. Age seemed to have an bigger effect on generalized trust then ethnic heterogeneity. Also ethnic identity did not directly effect generalized trust but that contact and ethnic identity did in some indirect way effect generalized trust because contact led people to believe that all people are the same no matter their ethnic identity.

    Abstract [en]

It has been known for a long time that buying a real-estate property may be the biggest financial purchase an individual will ever make in their lifetime. With the help of 6873 empirical observations on sales that has occurred in downtown Gothenburg we have in this case study investigated whether different traits connected to the residence affected the final price and to what point that effect occurred. We decided to examine the conveyance of apartment real estates from the year 2010 up until 2019. The use of the hedonic model has been essential in the making of this study. A multiple linear regression and a logarithmic regression model has been applied to the hedonic model. Beyond the traits in the apartment real estates, we inspected the mortgage interest rates for the appropriate time of each sale. We also studied whether or not the year of the sale had an effect on the final price. The results demonstrated that the number of square meters had the most effect on final price in downtown Gothenburg. The years of 2018 and 2019 affected the price the most. This was not a surprise considering the price development that downtown Gothenburg has had in the last 15 years. The tenant-owner association fee was the variable in our regression analysis that had the most negative effect on the final price.

    Abstract [en]

This paper analysis if changes in population influence the condominium prices for Stockholm for the period 2000 to 2018. It uses Dickey-Fuller test, Engle-Granger test, multiple linear regression and market theory. The results show that changes in population and the condominium prices in Stockholm are not related. According to numbers from "Statistiska Centralbyrån" (SCB, 2020), prices on condominiums have increased in the last couple of decades. There are different factors that cause the prices on condominiums but in this study the focus is on population in particular. Another three control variables that are also included are median net income, number of completed condominiums and mortgage rate. All variables are based on quarterly data from the beginning of 2000 to the end of 2018. The regression results in this study show that the prices on condominium prices and population in Stockholm have no relation. However, the regressions show that change in median net income and change in condominium prices are positively correlated. The other variables, completed condominiums and mortgage rate, did not seem to have an effect on condominium prices in Stockholm. The conclusion of this study is that change in population and change in condominium prices in Stockholm are not related.

Svensk immigration: På vinst eller förlust?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Immigration has for a long time been a central issue in politics and in society but today it is more topical than ever. Media has always played a large part in the forming of individuals opinions, but these opinions tends to become shrewd, especially in social media and especially when talking about the cost of immigration for a country. In a world where media has a major impact, it may be difficult either to be critical to the content but also to be completely neutral, when the issue is very complex and involves many people.

How does the immigration really affect the economic growth of Sweden? Does it come at a profit or a loss?

In order to arrive at a conclusion on this much mentioned issue, the Solow-Swan model is used as a theoretical base to allow for the capturing of labor, capital and technological advances. A multiple regression is used as an empirical model to obtain any statistical correlation between real GDP per capita in working age (dependent variable) and the independent variables; immigration, employment rate and repo interest rate. Year 2001 to 2014 make out the time period being investigated, and the data is based on each quarter.

From this study we can deduce a positive impact of immigration after already a quarter. The more time the study examines, the more positive impact on real GDP per capita in working age.

    Abstract [en]

This paper uses cointegration techniques and Error correction methodology to investigate the determinants of the Swedish real house prices, for the period 1986-2016. Previous studies have shown that real disposable income, dwelling completed (that is the supply of completed buildings on the market) and real interest rate are factors that affects housing prices. These factors will therefore be used as the basic parameters in this report. A survey will also be carried out with additional parameters such as population and unemployment, selected with the support of Claussens (2013) model.Time series data with the parameters mentioned above as explanatory variables, and house price as a dependent variable, are examined for unit roots and co-integration tests to be estimated in a regression analysis with an Error correction model. This is done to investigate a short and long run relation. The results show that the real interest rate after taxes and real disposable income has key-roles when it comes to explaining the long run relationship with the Swedish house prices. The results also show that ATMR (real interest rate after tax) and real disposable income have an impact on the house prices in the short run but that the housing market is not in a residential bubble. A conclusion can be drawn that when income increases, it will increase the household consumption, which will reflect on house prices. Low interest rate will cause more people to lend money on a market, that already has a very low supply of housing.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to analyze if a relationship between equity fund fees and the average return or risk-adjusted return exists. The fund management and placement targeting is also taken into account. The study is based on monthly data for Swedish equity funds during the period 2008 to 2018. Both correlation and regression analysis were conducted to study the connection. The theoretical basis consists of portfolio selection theory. The result indicates a positive correlation, that a higher fee contributes to a higher average return, risk adjusted international excess return (Jensen's alpha) and risk adjusted performance (Sharpe Ratio), which supports to some of the previous research. The result also implies that a higher annual fee is associated with a lower Swedish risk adjusted excess return. Since desired significance was not fulfilled the conclusion is that the annual fee or fund management does not seem to affect the return. Funds with only Swedish investments shows a determined positive relation to higher returns.

Individualism vs. Collectivism: Lessons from American Anti-war films2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Individualism vs. collectivism is a fundamental cultural and political conflict in the world today. To better understand the relationship and the conflict between individualism and collectivism, we chose American anti-war films as the object of study. In this thesis, using theories of representation, individualism, collectivism and qualitative content analysis, we discussed the representation of individualism and collectivism, the conflict between individualism and collectivism, and the solution for the conflict in two films,

Born on the fourth of July and Platoon. Our study suggests that the individualism and collectivism is mainly reflected in three aspects: goals, interpersonal relationship and freedom. Furthermore, this thesis gives insightful implications of individualism and collectivism with particular resolution for the conflict.

Corruption in politics: The case of Croatia: A comparative study of media representation of corruption in Croatia before and after it became a member of the European Union2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to describe how the problem of corruption in Croatia was represented in the media before and after Croatia became a part of the European Union. The thesis fills a gap in the existing literature regarding descriptive research of media and the lack of descriptive research regarding media representation of corruption in Croatia. The theoretical approach consists of social constructivism, 'What is the problem represented to be' approach by Bacchi and identifying corruption in regard to its determinants (factors). The 'WPR' approach will be filtered through corruption and its determinants, which are identified as: institutional, economic and cultural. With the chosen theoretical approach, qualitative methods are a logical option as a type of research strategy in this thesis. The study is designed as a comparative case of media representation of corruption between two different time frames, before and after Croatia's entry to the EU. The underlying precondition for bettering of Croatian political system would be resolving a cultural issue of a country, and that is corruption. The results show that media representation of corruption in the newspaper Vecernji list present corruption as an economic problem and dependent on institutional solutions, whereas the institutional factors depend on the cultural factors of a country as a whole, such as trust in the political system.

Sweden’s Weapons Exports Paradox2021In: Do-Gooders at the End of Aid: Scandinavian Humanitarianism in the Twenty-First Century / [ed] Antoine de Bengy Puyvallée; Kristian Bjørkdahl, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2021, p. 101-122Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter explores the paradoxical logics embedded in the Swedish policymaking elites’ rationale for exporting advanced conventional weapons to the so-called developing world. Using the South Africa JAS-39 Gripen fighter jet deal as a case study, the chapter demonstrates how the policymaking elite consciously pursues a dual strategy regarding the production and circulation of weapons – one that is driven both by the Swedish internationalist tradition of “doing good” and “being good” in the world, but also for instrumental purposes. Overall, the investigation illustrates how such processes have become embedded societal symbols of Swedish identity in the post-Cold War era – a phenomenon that serves to conflate the operations of a militarized state with the perceived ideals of Swedish mediation, honest brokership, and overall as a significant contributor to frameworks of promoting ethical and peaceful methods on a global stage. These paradoxes, it is argued, raise important questions about so-called “Swedish exceptionalism.”

The interplay between national interest and idealism regarding Sweden's Gripen exports2017In: Scientia Militaria: South African Journal of Military Studies, ISSN 2309-9682, E-ISSN 2224-0020, Vol. 45, no 1, p. 45-66Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The study on which this article is based, aimed to map out and analyse the ways in which Sweden's Gripen exports have been shaped and sustained since the end of the Cold War. It did so by examining three interrelated factors that have had an effect on Sweden's defence industry. By illustrating how societal preferences, defence and security policy shifts, and the role of national identity have influenced weapons manufacturing and exports, this article provides a balanced overview of the most salient push and pull factors of Sweden's Gripen exports. The central contention of the study was that Swedish weapons manufacturing and exports often involve a close interaction between interests and ideals. Moreover, due to the multitude of richly correlated, interconnected and mutually reinforcing elements related to such practices, there cannot be a neat and parsimonious distinction between agents and structures and domestic and international settings. Instead, the study was especially reflective of real-world practices and the strategic relational approach between those forces that shape and sustain Sweden's Gripen exports.
