Creative Industrial Development for Regional Economic Growth: The Example of Regional Film Centres in Sweden.2007In: Uddevalla Symposium 2006: Entrepreneurship and Development - Local Processes and Global Patterns: Revised papers presented at the 9th Uddevalla Symposium, 15-17 June, Fairfax, VA, USA / [ed] Iréne Johansson, Trollhättan: University West , 2007, p. 91-103Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Knowledge and creativity are increasingsly important factors for economic growth. Changes in the economic landscape mean that the location of human capacity becomes a key aspect for knowledge creation and regional economic growth. This article discusses the influence of political-economic structures and the importance of the creative human capital, in relation to the development and localisation of a government supported regional film industry in Sweden. The overall aim for initialising these regional film production centres is to enhance regional economic growth in new creative industrial sectors that can replace and/or supplement the traditional industry in the respective region. This article argues that this kind of creative industry is generally most likely to be mor successful in locations that can provide financial support and attract the key creative human capital. Regions with high population density and diversified economy will thereby be the best suited.

The language use and its change of three Disney princesses from three different generations2018Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Disney princess franchise is one of the most successful brands in the world and has a powerful influence on children and their behaviour.

The aim of this research was to examine what stereotypical women's language is present in three Disney princess movies (Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and Brave) and to see if there has been a shift in the language use. The three selected movies are from three different generations (1937-1959, 1989-1992 and 2009-2013).

The features that were analysed include hedges, tag questions, questions, commands and directives, empty adjectives, politeness and compliments. A mixed method of both qualitative and quantitative research was used to acquire the data.

Although the newer princess showed some usage of stereotypical women's speech, there was a vast difference to the two older princesses' speech. The third generation movie presents a princess who uses more assertive language and was more deviating towards using politeness in her speech. Overall, the two older princesses uttered a larger frequency of features that are categorized as stereotypical women's speech, making their speech appear more uncertain. The newer princess, on the other hand, used more definite language. Although some features that are traditionally viewed as women's speech are used more by the new princess, like questions, it is important to consider the content of the features. When analysing the content of the feature, it shows that a feature is not necessarily indefinite solely because it is related to typical women's speech.

Wicked Witches and Evil Queens?: A corpus-based study of the near-synonyms evil and wicked in contemporary American English2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine what contemporary corpora can reveal about the use of the two adjectives evil and wicked. These two synonyms have been analysed using corpus linguistics in order to acquire results about the differences between them regarding frequency of use, as well as their collocating nouns. The results have also been analysed with a focus on gender perspectives. The study has a quantitative as well as a qualitative approach. The material investigated for this study consists of a corpus called The Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The definitions of the two adjectives have also been searched within a few of the greater dictionaries.

The findings reveal that the word evil is used to a greater extent by speakers and writers in different contexts in comparison to its synonym wicked. There are also significant differences between male and female nouns in adjective and noun collocations. The adjective evil is more frequently used to address male nouns, whereas its synonym wicked is more widely used as an attribute to female nouns. The differences are aligned with common gender stereotypes presented in previous studies and support the results regarding gender approaches in adjective and noun collocations.

Väntan: Etnografiskt kollage kring ett mellanrum2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is about waiting. It's about what happens when an ethnographer goes into the field and asks people to fill a small and indeterminate word like waiting with thoughts, experiences and recollections. The study is primarily based on twenty qualitative interviews with thirteen interviewees in Gothenburg. The interviewees were selected from the ethnographer's own circle of acquaintances and constitute a fairly homogenous group of individuals. They are early middle-aged, were brought up in Sweden during the 1960s and 1970s, belong to a relatively well-educated lower middle-class, have artistic/cultural interests and work in the public/cultural sector. In an attempt to put the interviewees' narratives into a wider context, I have collected and used supplementary material in the form of different narratives communicated, for example, through the mass media, fiction, DIY-books, popular science and art. A central point of departure in the study is that the words we use are filled with meanings that we ourselves assign to them, and that an interview is a form of narrative in which knowledge is constructed at that particular moment in time. The aim of this dissertation is to study some of the articulations of waiting. What kind of waiting is highlighted in the narratives of waiting in every day life? Which words, themes, images, characters and motifs are available to use and grapple with? What is the purpose of waiting, and which ideals, norms and perceptions connected with waiting emerge? By listening to and studying the articulations of waiting I capture a time-dimension – that is partly about an everyday perception and organisation of time and partly about a central aspect of becoming a subject at a more existential level. The aspect of time that has been captured here indicates that waiting is about change. When subjectivity is understood as something that happens, an activity, an action or a process, movement is at the core. Being or becoming a subject demands transition and change – the movement from one state to another. Fulfilling oneself means moving between the different positions that one seeks to occupy. Waiting can thus be said to capture the actual passage, which means that this state that we usually define as something stationary and uneventful is actually an important productive mechanism. This then constitutes the actual effort, attempt and charging up involved in being able to attain something else. The driving force in all these processes is different kinds of imagined needs – the need to become a subject and be fulfilled.

Anglicisms in the French Language: The case of the Twitter discourse2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The use of anglicisms in the French discourse is becoming very common. With the development of the internet and social media platforms, it is possible to observe an important increase in the presence of English borrowings in written discourse despite the continuous efforts from the Académie Française to propagate the correct use of the French language. The widely popular social media platform Twitter has thus been chosen to study the types of anglicisms currently employed by French Twitter users, to investigate the way they are used, and to understand the reasons behind their use. The study also sheds light on the divide between borrowers and those who call for the preservation of the French language. To answer these questions, tweets were manually retrieved using a set of keywords and short interviews were conducted with some French users of the platform. The results suggest that a wide variety of borrowings ranging from words to phrases and sentences are used indifferent contexts related to our modern society. It further shows that users of these anglicisms have either gotten used to English because of continuous exposure to the language or aim at filling a linguistic gap. Finally, the negative reactions of some Twitter users to the excess of anglicisms andthe reactions of borrowers who oppose the interferences with their language use show that a generational conflict is likely causing this divide.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

How words change meaning: A Comparative Corpus Analysis of the word Queer between 1990-1994 and 2015-20192022Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This research paper analyses how the meaning and usage of the word queer has changed between 1990-2019. The aim has been to determine the primary meaning of queer in contemporary texts, comparing it with the primary definition suggested by four widely used online dictionaries. This essay has analyzed and compared the usage of queer over two different timespans provided by The Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), from 1990-1994 to the most recent, 2015-2019. The dictionaries chosen for the study were: The Oxford English Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com. The findings from the corpus analysis were compared to the primary suggestions in the online dictionaries. The results showed that the primary definition of queer suggested in three out of the four dictionaries do not correlate with the definition most frequently used in contemporary texts.

Skolkultur: -en studie av läroplan 942010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Cultural industry from threat to salvation: film production from art policy to regional development2008Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

The object of this article is to explore the political processes behind the regionalisation of film production in Sweden since the early 1990s and forward. What can explain the transfer of power from central government and film production companies to regionally based institutions? My thesis is that institutions matter. Institutions are seen as an intermediate level between state structures and rational choice/actor explanations. Institutions are equivalent to formal rules, compliance procedures and standard operation practices that structure the relationship between individuals in various units of the polity and economy. The redefinition of film production from national art policy to regional and local policy for development and economic growth is crucial. This redefinition also has to be seen in the light of the general trend towards regionalisation both in Sweden and internationally.

    Abstract [en]

This report focuses on the change that has taken place in the relationship between the state and the cultural industry in Sweden. From the beginning of the 20th Century, when film and popular music (jazz and later rock´n roll) were introduced in Sweden, to the 1990´s the relationship between state and cultural industries has been one of distrust. Popular film and music were seen as having a damaging effect on society. Today, cultural industy is seen as a salvation for the society. Regions and local communities see it as an important industry for growth and welfare. My aim is to study this new trend by using an empirical example of the growth of a Swedish regional resource- and production centre called Film in West. It is a joint-stock company owned by the regional council, established in 1992. Today it has become a powerful actor in national film politics and about half of the total numbers of feature films produced in Sweden during the last ten years were produced in co-operation with Film in West. The object is to explore the political processes behind the regionalisation of film production in Sweden since the early 1990s and forward. What can explain the transfer of power from central government and film production companies to regionally based institutions? The theoretical thesis is that ideas are important for change and create new forms of institution such as Film in West. Ideas can function as a mental map, or common framework of meaning. When policy entrepreneurs introduced the idea to see film as an instrument for regional and local development and economic growth and not as art policy, regionalisation become possible.

Bristen på likvärdig bedömning: en enkätstudie om lärares bedömningsstöd2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ur mörkret: En ny tematisk analys2024Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund

    Abstract [en]

When a game designer starts the development of a videogame it is important to know how the consumer, that is the player, will play the game. It is crucial to perform game tests and gather other forms of information to understand how the player will interact with the game. It is also important to create a game which the player can connect to and want to immerse themselves in, emotionally as well as practically. The purpose of this study is to try to find out how game developers can predict and control how the player will play the game. We’ve decided to perform this study on one specific game developer and one of their released titles. The developer we’ve chosen is Ubisoft Massive and we’re going to examine how they went about developing the game World in Conflict.

We performed a qualitative study with hermeneutics as our scientific standpoint, and we performed our empirical studies through mail-interviews. The theorems applied in the study is as follows: Logocentric narrative structure, distancing effect, rational choice theory, deterministic A.I., HCI (Human-Computer interaction), ludology based gamestudies as well as datamining.

The study shows that Ubisoft Massive uses several developer tools to predict how the player will interact with the game, such as datamining and game testing. A lot of details have been used get the player invested in the game, such as lighting effects, sound design and environments. The game uses deterministic A.I. to make the non-player characters seem more organic and they’ve interacted with players on communities to find out what players are looking for in games.

    Abstract [en]

Alice for the iPad (Atomic Antelope, 2010) is an application launched shortly after the first tablet was introduced by Apple in 2010. Based on The Nursery «Alice» (1890), an abridged bedtime version of Lewis Carroll's classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1866), the app adds subtle animations to John Tenniel's original illustrations. The app seems to be echoing and (re)constructing the past by varying and combining different patterns of movements, remediating the look of nineteenth-century popular pop-up books or «movables», as well as contemporaneous optical toys and apparatuses, which in different ways challenged the two-dimensional still image... One key issue addressed by the article is the meeting between a classical traditional style and the aesthetic premises of the digital image, as a way to highlight the former and to confirm authenticity. Alice for the iPad handles questions raised by adaptation, how to remain true to the original material under qualitatively different conditions. The article explores how the app is simultaneously visible and transparent, presenting itself as an optical toy or three-dimensional pop-up book from the past, yet producing its compelling self-reflective aspect precisely by mobilizing these «old» technologies.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Shedding Light on Conceptual Metaphors: The interchanging meanings of light and darkness in lyrics by Arcade Fire2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the conceptual metaphors of light and darkness. However, it focuses on how their standard meaning, which can be summarized as light is positive and darkness is negative, is interchanging with each other. The study focuses on the two conceptual metaphors NEGATIVITY IS LIGHT and POSITIVITY IS DARKNESS in song lyrics by the band Arcade Fire and what the target and source domain of these metaphors are. First, a corpus with all the applicable lyrics were made, and then a search was conducted for the keywords light, dark, white, and black. These lyrics containing the keywords were then analyzed to see if the keywords were used in a literal way or in a metaphorical way. The results show that three songs contain the conceptual metaphor NEGATIVITY IS LIGHT: “We Used to Wait,” and the metaphor in this song uses the domains ADDICTION TO TECHNOLOGY ARE FLASHING LIGHTS, “Reflektor,” uses the domains LONELINESS IS WHITE,and “Sprawl II (Mountain Beyond Mountains),” uses the domains THE UNKNOWN IS LIGHT and UNDESIRABILITY IS LIGHT. The song “Sprawl II (Mountain Beyond Mountains)” is the only song that contains the conceptual metaphor POSITIVITY IS DARKNESS, and the domains used in that metaphor are SAFETY IS DARKNESS.

Den arga tjejen: En komparativ filmanalys av Kat Stratford i 10 orsaker att hata dig och Janis Ian i Mean Girls2022Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The swedish film industry is regulated by a film contract between the state and representatives of the industry. This contract shall be renewed during 2013. The swedish state has in a declaration of intention expressed a wish of changes about the conditions to acquire financial support from the state for film production in Sweden. A so-called technology neutrality shall be instated which means that film production no longer in forehand needs to have secured a cinema distribution deal to acquire financial support from the state. This could mean a change for distribution of swedish films in Sweden which now consist of a somewhat strict order of viewing windows.

Our research addresses how swedish film producers, distributors and cinema owners think about the distribution of swedish feature films. Qualitative interviews were conducted with these professionals to get a conclusive picture of the situation in Sweden to date and what the future might bring.

The essay deals with the cinema's importance, the growth of Video on demand, and producers and distributers wishes of a more flexible way for distribution of film. The possibility to be able to tailor the distribution for every individual film and the window systems impact on the films up-to-dateness.

Lyckans och lidandets etik2009Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

An Analysis of Curricula and Discourses of Religious Literacy in Three National Contexts2024In: Religious Literacy in Secular Religious Education: Nordic Perspectives and Beyond / [ed] Daniel Enstedt, Karin K. Flensner, Wilhelm Kardemark, Münster: Waxmann Verlag, 2024, p. 215-236Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Book abstract:

In this volume, questions are addressed revolving around religious literacy and education. The term religious literacy is explored as the ability to discern and analyze intersections of religion with social, political, and cultural life in pluralistic societies. Questions about what types of religious literacies are possible in a non-confessional, and even secular, educational context are in focus. It delves into the intricate relationship between religious literacy, religious education in the Nordic countries, and the development of subject knowledge and generic abilities. The Nordic countries, as modern secular welfare states with shared characteristics, provide an intriguing framework for comparison. The exploration of variations in the organization, content, and goals of religious education in Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden sheds light on the process of shaping educational content within specific historical and societal contexts and the anthology broadens its scope by incorporating global perspectives from the Indian, Italian, and Indonesian contexts.

The volume features contributions from 18 researchers who explore empirical, methodological, and theoretical aspects of religious literacy and education. The concept of religious literacy, encompassing both knowledge and generic skills, proves to be indispensable for navigating the diverse religious and non-religious worldviews present in pluralistic societies.

Tailored for students, educators, education researchers, and policymakers, this anthology contributes to the ongoing discourse on religious literacy. It not only provides valuable insights into the Nordic educational landscape but also fosters a global dialogue on the crucial role of education in understanding diverse worldviews.

Ämnesövergripande arbete i en ämnesindelad kontext: En kvalitativ studie om ämnesövergripande arbete utifrån Lgr 11 och progressivistisk teori2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Jazz harmony has during jazz history mainly been functionally based on principles of tonality derived from the classical and romantic periods of the 18th and 19th centuries. In the Evolutionary Jazz Harmony project we introduced a functionless harmony system that impacted the musical feeling in jazz compositions to imitate the harmonic feeling in an avant-garde way. The main features of that new harmony system were chords not built on any specific base note and not necessarily connected to the major/minor concept. In this project we introduce an automatic evaluation of the produced harmony sequences that both looks at each individual chord and the chord progression. A population of chord progressions is evaluated and the highest ranked ones will most likely be used for breeding of the offspring. This project is one of the sub-projects of the EJI (Evolutionary Jazz Improvisation) project, where we explore various aspects of jazz music; improvised solo, harmony, tune creation, algorithmic creation of piano, bass and drum accompaniment, communication between instruments etc. The results have been evaluated by a live jazz group consisting of professional jazz musicians.

    Abstract [en]

Jazz harmony has during the jazz history mainly been functionally based on principles of tonality derived from classical and romantic periods of the 18th and 19th centuries. By means of computer based evolutionary principles we introduce a function-less harmony system that somewhat changes the musical feeling in jazz compositions to more imitate the harmonic feeling of early experiments made in the 1950’s by advanced and new-thinking jazz musicians like Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry and others. Experiments have also been made during the 60’s and 70’s by e.g. Herbie Hancock, Miles Davies and fusion musicians Brecker Brothers. Not to mention all experiments in the classical music domain during the entire 20th century from Schoenberg and onwards. However, from the last quarter of the 20th century a stagnation of the harmonic development in jazz has ensued, and nothing harmonically essential has occurred. The Evolutionary Jazz Improvisation project is an attempt to break the ice and open new dimensions to harmonic thinking. In addition to new types of harmonies, the new harmony system also forms the basis for scale construction to be used by the jazz musician when performing a solo. This new harmony and scale system has proved to be a musically interesting platform at exploration of new harmonic areas. The main features of this system are chords not built on any specific base note, chords that should be regarded as harmonic spectrums, and scales of a new kind based on the harmonic spectrums.

    Abstract [en]

This paper describes a system developed to create computer based jazz improvisation solos. The generation of the improvisation material uses interactive evolution, based on a dual genetic representation: a basic melody line representation, with energy constraints ("rubber band") and a hierarchic structure of operators that processes the various parts of this basic melody. To be able to listen to and evaluate the result in a fair way, the computer generated solos have been imported into a musical environment to form a complete jazz composition. The focus of this paper is on the data representations developed for this specific type of music. This is the first published part of an ongoing research project in generative jazz, based on probabilistic and evolutionary strategies.

Att se världen i svart och vitt: En kritisk granskning av SOS Barnbyars reklamkampanjer2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to do a critical review of the aid organization SOS Children’s Villages text- and video campaigns, from a postcolonial perspective. Our purpose is divided into two questions: Are there colonial values in the advertising campaigns? Which language- and image strategies are used by SOS Children’s Villages to put across their messages? Our material consists of 10 selected video clips, and four printed ads that are made up of an image and a short text, which are part of a campaign named: Inte ett enda barn ska behöva vara ensamt (translation: Not a single child should have to be alone). We have chosen to use text- and image analysis as a method in our review of the material. The main theoretical base in our thesis is postcolonialism, while”the Other” and ”whiteness” are two concepts we have chosen so that we can reach a deeper analytical level. We have analyzed some of the clips from the concept “The White Man’s Burden”, and have discovered that ”The Western World” tries to insert their own values and ideals into ”The Third World”. We have also discovered that the children, in some sequences, are presented as non-human and differentiated from the “white Westerners”. The last chapter in our thesis problematizes how modern technology, as Smartphones, applications and social media, are used to make it easier to give money to charity. We also discuss how “The Western World” can be seen as a contributor to the current situation in “The Third World”, which makes the aspect of high-technology even more interesting.

Perspectives for Textbook Selection: A Study of Vocabulary in EFL Textbooks in year 8 in Swedish secondary school2022Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study three different EFL textbooks designed for pupils in 8th grade in Swedish secondary school were analyzed. The analyzed textbooks are Second Time (1997), Prime Time (2009) and Sparks (2017). By limiting the text selection to only comparing fictional excerpts in the textbooks, two texts from each textbook were randomly selected. These six texts have been used as the primary sources for this analysis. The aim of this study was to investigate how textbooks can contribute to EFL learners and their vocabulary acquisition by determining the lexical diversity and density of the textbooks and look at their frequency in word occurrence. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of textbook selection in relation to these lexical phenomena. The research questions investigated are 1, What is the lexical diversity of each textbook? How many tokens, types and noun lemmas and verb lemmas are found in the texts and the textbooks? 2, What words are considered to be high-frequency words and how do they correspond to everyday English, according to the New General Service List. 3, What is the lexical density of each textbook? Finally, 4. What are the implications in relation to textbook selection? The conclusion regarding the research questions is that the textbook Sparks could arguably be considered the book that corresponds best to the researched criteria because the data showed that Sparks contains a higher amount of lexical diversity and density, together with a higher number of high-frequency words which corresponds to the NGSL. However, this conclusion is drawn solely on the researched criteria regarding vocabulary. To obtain a broader understanding of what textbook to consider, a more qualitative study that involves more criteria, such as themes or grammar would be needed.
