The self-referral affordances of school-based social work support: a case study2017In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664, Vol. 20, no 6, p. 869-881Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

School-based social work can reach children at risk through the promotion of children’s participation in seeking support. Drawing on Gibson’s theory of affordances, the aim of this interview-based study was to identify affordances for self-referral associated with school-based social work support. Results reveal three affordances facilitating children’s self-initiated contact: (i) the day-to-day presence of social workers in the school environment supports investment in relationships, (ii) use of communication technologies facilitates contact and (iii) the visibility of the social workers’ practice encourages contact-initiation. Common to all three affordances are the accessibility of the social workers, and the generation of trust.

    Abstract [en]

The following study deals with the participation of user-representatives from various social enterprises. The overall aim of the study is to examine how participation can be influenced by social interactions between future social workers and user-representatives from social enterprises. A qualified study has been carried out through a participant observation for two days in a future-workshop between social work students, teachers and user-representatives. Empirical data has been analyzed by means of symbolic interactionsm and Goffman's dramaturgical theater analysis. The age range of study participants is at 22-70 years and it was predominately female group of participants.

The study-results show that the inclusion of real influence is something pursued both from the policies of the National board and from community citizens, in this study in terms of students and user representatives. However, this is nothing that shows in practice, it is rather a pseudoparticipation which includes a lot of talk and little action, where participation does not lead to any real influence. It requires an even division of power between different group representatives to provide the right conditions in the making of participation on equal terms. Lack of time is a preventing factor. It appears that the success of participation is that we share the same understanding of reality and pursue a power leveling to fight stigmatization. This requires common meeting places. The study shows that a long term approach for a successful implementation at all stages from education to the workplace to the citizen is required. There is at long chain where much can go wrong along the way. This may explain the inertia detected in this study.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about describing interactions within the school's student health organization inter-nally and externally, and how collaboration on student affairs created in multi-disciplinary teams. The study is based on a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews that give the interviewee the opportunity to answer the exact same question but with their own thoughts and opinions. This gives interviews a more openness in the responses. The study includes a descrip-tion of the student care / student health emergence, collaboration, professions and international research. This is to give the reader a broad insight and understanding about the subject. The selection of representatives for the interviews were conducted on the basis of different profes-sions, given their connection to participation in student health team. The interview questions are based on the issues; How is the interaction between the different professions described within the student health organization? And how does the interaction with external organiza-tions work out? The study shows that collaboration in student health and its external partners is a necessity to carry out a task / achieve a common goal. The collaboration internally at the school works well and professions welcomes the collaboration. Having meetings continuously provides security at work where everyone uses their own specific skills. It is noticeable that during a time of reorganization the staff is not always focused and not able to participate in meetings, which affects the interaction negatively. A continuity of a team is important for con-fidence in each other's professions. The external collaboration usually works well but some-times it takes too long before school and student receives the help sought. A better structure of the meetings would improve a better collaboration. Themes that emerged during the study were; positive and negative interactions, the importance of formal and informal cooperation, the im-portance of external cooperation, comments on the organization and working procedures, and views on student health. In conclusion, the results show that collaboration is a necessity for the success of working prevention and health promotion towards a common goal. The school by law is required to implement this common goal.

A literature review about young people with intellectual disabilities and social media2017In: Cyberspace 2017, 2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research has studied internet use in youth and adults in general, but little is known about how young people with intellectual disabilities use the Internet and social media. The available research indicates that there are risks and barriers but also opportunities to be found. While there are risks for victimization and bullying and barriers in terms of difficulties caused by literacy and communication skills, cyber-language, cyber-etiquette and accessibility, there are also opportunities such as friendships, development of social identity and self-esteem and enjoyment. The purpose of this study is to conduct a literature review of the research field, with special focus on young people with intellectual disabilities and social activities on the Internet. A search strategy was designed in collaboration with the Gothenburg University library. The databases Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar was chosen due to their multi-disciplinary character. The search was limited to scientific journal articles and brief reports published in English. Search terms were chosen and combined with Boolean operators. Search was concluded in May 2017. After articles off topic and cross references were removed, 12 of 452 publications remained. The preliminary analysis showed that most research was conducted in Europe and North America. The studies were primary from psychology, education, medicine and social science. More than half of the studies were published after 2015 indicating a rapidly growing field. Most of the studies were qualitative. The studies were grouped thematically based on content: opportunities, risks, vulnerability, barriers, sexuality, identity and support.

Young People with Intellectual Disabilities and Social Media: A Literature Review and Thematic Analysis2019In: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research, ISSN 1501-7419, E-ISSN 1745-3011, Vol. 21, no 1, p. 129-140Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The aim of this review is to identify and analyse the research findings in the field of young people with intellectual disabilities and social media.Method: Twelve peer-reviewed papers published in well-established and recognized journals between 2001 and 2017 were identified from electronic database searches (Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar), the Internet (Facebook) and correspondence with experts. Results: Six topics were identified through thematic analysis of the texts: opportunities, risk and vulnerability, sexuality, identity, barriers and support. Conclusion: The latest research on young people with intellectual disabilities is characterized by issues of risk, vulnerability and support. The concept of positive risk-taking is suggested for the development of methodological approaches in practice and research. Furthermore, vulnerability, online and offline activities and identity formation should be examined more closely, and there is a call for new research methods in this area, for example observations and netnography.

”Därav står dörren oftast öppen”: Professionellas, inom gymnasiesärskolans verksamhet, upplevelser och erfarenheterav identitetsskapande för ungdomar med funktionsvariationer2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Att definiera verkligheten: En kvalitativ studie om medias dagordningssättande makt2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate and increase our understanding of what the New Public Management reform has resulted for the employees of the municipal home care service and if they feel that the work has changed. The study is based on a qualitative research methodology and empirical material was collected through semi-structured interviews. In the study six respondents participated. All worked as assistant nurses in municipal home care services in Västra Götaland County. In order to analyze the collected material, Foucault's theories about discipline, power and monitoring were used. These theories can be interpreted as a power-using tool. Who are exercised to create committed bodies with the purpose of socializing the individual to adapt to norms and rules that will lead to efficiency in the work. The results of the study shows that the respondents feel controlled and supervised. It has also had a negative impact on the quality of care and social relations with the care providers.

Grundskoleelevers icke-kognitiva kunskaper: En uppgift för socialpedagogen?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish school has undergone great changes, society places different demands on today's youth's and international measurements show that Swedish pupils perform lower results in school. Research has shown that non- cognitive skills play a major role in the future progress and development of cognitive skills. What is the school's mission to develop children and young people's non- cognitive skills? Through a qualitative content analysis examines the Education Act, the compulsory school curriculum and the UNCRC, focusing on school assignments for child and adolescent development of non- cognitive skills, young people's rights to a safe school environment and the opportunity for socialization and how the document allocates responsibility between school and home in child development. The study also examines the curriculum for elementary teacher program at University West to clarify teachers' knowledge area and analyzed how a social pedagogical framework can supplement teacher in the above responsibilities and tasks in relation to home. The social pedagogical reference framework emphasizes the importance of seeing the big picture of a child's situation and that it´s important that young people are included in social communities and businesses to develop. To thrive, children need to get the basic needs in Maslow's needs pyramid satisfied. This gives an understanding of how important it is to give children and young people right conditions to develop optimally. Based on the categories of socialization, home and school, safe school environment, non- cognitive skills and disposition reveals among other things that the school has an important responsibility for the child's development but that the home has the primary responsibility and that the school is responsible for more than just cognitive skills.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to explore and analyze young adults' experiences with the support given by social workers as part of a program for young adults with substance abuse. The respondents in the study had a current or recently completed assistance effort from the social services constituted by support from this program. The study is qualitative with a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach, in order to explore and analyze the respondents' personal perspectives and experiences. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted and the data was analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. The results were analyzed in relation to previous research and the study's theoretical framework. The study is based on the empowerment theory and the key concepts used were availability, alliance, motivation, user influence and power.

The results of the study show that it is important that social workers have a comprehensive view and that user influence is important in the treatment work. Furthermore, the existence of an alliance between the social workers and young adults is crucial for the young adults' changing process, an alliance that is built by the social worker's confidence-inspiring efforts. These efforts include understanding and caring for the young adults, being there for them and allowing them the time they need. The results also show that consciousness-raising and educational talks between the social workers and young adults create motivation and willingness regarding continued contact with the social workers. Additionally, the results show that the young adults understand the social workers' rules as well as their preferential right of interpretation, which in turn shows that they have an acceptance for the social worker's assumption of power. A central conclusion of the study is that the quality of the social workers' and young adults' relationship is of fundamental importance throughout the young adults' process of change.

Den tysta delaktigheten: En studie om den äldre personens upplevelse av delaktighet och meningsfullhet i vardagen2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to describe and analyse how persons within the elderly care experience their every-day life with respect to their opportunities to affect the content. A part of the purpose is also to illuminate this issue from the perspectives of participation and meaningfulness. The authors are answering the following questions in the study: How do elderly people experience their every-day life? How do elderly people experience their ability to make every-day decisions? How can elderly people participate in the every-day life? How is meaningfulness expressed in the every-day life of elderly people?

This study has a qualitative approach and the data in the study was collected through nine interviews with elderly people within the elderly care. The respondents are persons over 65 years of age who benefits from elderly care such as home care service and special home.

The result of the study shows that the elderly persons experience their every-day life based on their knowledge of their physical abilities and limitations. The result also shows that elderly persons experience participation and ability to affect their every-day life based on their physical limitations. Simultaneously, participation is also present in an unknown process of adoption to the routines of elderly care. In addition, another aspect of the conclusion is that the elderly person expresses sadness and loneliness due to old age, disability and lack of someone or something.

A part of the result is also a deeper, existential form of participation – the silent participation. This comes in two perspectives, the satisfied silent participation that means that the elderly person participates in his or her mind in a positive way, and the suppressed participation when the elderly sees and observes how he or she really would like to have it, without expressing it. The result also shows that meaningfulness, or lack of meaningfulness, is depended on whether the elderly person has insight in their perceived life situation and their ability to manage and affect the content of their every-day life.

    Abstract [sv]

Paradigm Shift in Game Theory: Sociological Re-Conceptualization of Human Agency,Social Structure, and Agents' Cognitive-Normative Frameworks and Action Determination Modalities2018Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article aims to present some of the initial work of developing a social science grounded game theory—as a clear alternative to classical game theory. Two distinct independent initiatives in Sociology are presented: One, a systems approach, social systems game theory (SGT),and the other, Erving Goffman's interactionist approach (IGT). These approaches are presented and contrasted with classical theory. They focus on the social rules, norms, roles, role relationships, and institutional arrangements, which structure and regulate human behavior. While strategic judgment and instrumental rationality play an important part in the sociological approaches, they are not a universal or dominant modality of social action determination. Rule following is considered, generally speaking, more characteristic and more general. Sociological approaches, such as those outlined in this article provide a language and conceptual tools to more adequately and effectively than the classical theory describe, model, and analyze the diversity and complexity of human interaction conditions and processes: (1) complex cognitive rule based models of the interaction situation with which actors understand and analyze their situations; (2) value complex(es) with which actors operate, often with multiple values and norms applying in interaction situations;(3) action repertoires (rule complexes) with simple and complex action alternatives—plans, programs, established (sometimes highly elaborated) algorithms, and rituals; (4) a rule complex of action determination modalities for actors to generate and/or select actions in game situations; three actionmodalities are considered here; each modality consists of one or more procedures or algorithms for action determination: (I) following or implementing a rule or rule complex, norm, role, ritual,or social relation; (II) selecting or choosing among given or institutionalized alternatives according toa rule or principle; and (III) constructing or adopting one or more alternatives according to a value, guideline, or set of criteria. Such determinations are often carried out collectively. The paper identifies and illustrates in a concluding table several of the key differences between classical theory and the sociological approaches on a number of dimensions relating to human agency; social structure, norms, institutions, and cultural forms; patterns of game interaction and outcomes, the conditions of cooperation and conflict, game restructuring and transformation, and empirical relevance. Sociologically based game theory, such as the contributions outlined in this article suggest a language and conceptual tools to more adequately and effectively than the classical theory describe, model, and analyze the diversity, complexity, and dynamics of human interaction conditions and processes and, therefore, promises greater empirical relevance and scientific power. An Appendix provides an elaboration of SGT, concluding that one of SGT's major contributions is the rule based conceptualization of games as socially embedded with agents in social roles and role relationships and subject to cognitive-normative and agential regulation. SGT rules and rule complexes are based on contemporary developments relating to granular computing and Artificial Intelligence in general.

    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates how work integrated learning (WIL) can be re-imagined/re-enacted as collaborative playgrounds of networks. To do this we first establish the working context for these reflections by exploring fragments of biography and the immediate catalyst which was a recent seminar held over 5 days, beginning in the rural Swedish town of Ed and, for the last 2 days, at University West in Trollhättan. We then set out to explore the normative and theoretical context of our approach before finally moving to an exploration of the concept of WIL via CLA and scenarios. Our overall goal is to describe some features of an expanded concept of WIL as it relates to intercultural learning. In doing this we hope to generate processes that facilitate the kind of learning necessary if we are to enable teachers and students to build sustainable futures they can realistically aspire to. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

    Abstract [en]

It is easy to feel impatient with the pace for change when it comes to developing truly sustainable culture yet things are happening all over the world to lay the ground work, create the architecture and language of sustainability as a cultural reality. In Weaving Pedagogies of Possibility the authors seek to leverage from such developments. In this chapter the authors share their adventure in designing an open learning system within, across and between their instititutions. We insists this work involves peagogies in the plural as we seek to affirm and embrace alternative approaches to learning that draw on many cultures and places. We take it axiomatic that the word is always becoming other then it appears to be; that this is contested space; and thus it is in the play of environment, context, structure, culture an identity that the future lies. The sensitivity to the multiple and contested nature of social and ecological space lies at the heart of our vision an practice of pedagogies of possibiliy

Mina åsikter är precis lika viktiga som alla andras.: En kvalitativ studie om deltagares upplevelser inom daglig verksamhet.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

The choice of daily activities as a study area was made because we wanted to investigate how people with disabilities experience their work situation. An empowerment perspective seemed appropriate in this study because many of the theoretical concepts we wanted to use occurs within empowerment.

    Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze how participants experience and create meaning in daily activities based on an empowerment perspective.

    Method:

The study is of a qualitative nature with semi-structured interviews where the empiricism is based on five transcribed interviews. The persons interviewed have been selected on the basic of two criteria, that they could express themselves verbally and that they was granted and worked within daily activity according to LSS (1993:387). To get our interview questions answered an interview guide was composed. The empiricism was analyzed on the basis of the studies three theories belonging, meaningfulness and power. Interview analysis with focus on sentences has been used that includes sentence coding.

    Result:

The result shows that all participants are content with their work situation, they express that it is important for them to have something to occupy their day and to interact with others, but they don't experience that their work is accepted in society. It is made clear from the result of the study that the power relation between the staff and participants are relatively equal but that the participants are conscious of the fact that the staff has the greater responsibility and in that way also the greater power.

"Allting sker ju inte på en och samma dag": En kvalitativ studie om före detta kriminellas exitprocesser2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Criminality represents a social problem and it is a concern in social work. People who leave criminality often undergo the "exit process" with its four stages. These stages describe what people go through when they choose to leave their criminal lifestyles. The path from the old lifestyle can often be bumpy when individuals switch between the different stages. If this happens, the key is to look forward and continue their process and be aware that the exit process can last for a long time. It is impossible to predict which way the society develops but an endeavor is to present studies results that may form the basis for continued social work, when the exit process is under study. The purpose is to examine which factors that emerge as important for the exit process in the life of former criminals, and which obstacles and opportunities that emerge during this. The core concept and the analytical instrument is the

role, which is analyzed through the exit process four stages and systems theory's concept "formal" and "informal systems". These systems consist agencies in the formal systems as well as friends and family in the informal systems. To find answers to this the authors apply a qualitative approach in the form of narrative interviews. A self-help group were contacted and collaboration has taken place with this during the study. A specific event has been the starting point for all informants exit process, but it has taken different amount of time for informants to actually leave the criminal lifestyle. The new role has been shaped by the desire to change and finally all were ready to assume this. All informants have found their new role within a self-help group. Support and feedback from both the informal and formal systems has pervaded all the stages out of the exit process, however, consideration of the informal system. Positive feedback has been an opportunity for informants to continue the process, while negative feedback prevented it

Man måste tänka utanför boxen: En studie om elevhälsoteamets syn på tvärprofessionell samverkan för elever med hörselnedsättning i grundskolan2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Social inkludering i skolan: En kvalitativ studie om skolledningens syn på inkludering i Varbergs kommun i årskurs 7-92018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine how staff at a secure SiS-institution describes their view of how an optimal treatment institution needs to be designed to achieve the best treatment conditions. The examination took place in one of the State's board of Institutional Care (SiS) youth homes inSwedenfor young people 14-20 years. The three questions that the study accounts for are:

    • How does the staff describe that institutions needs to be organized to achieve the best treatment conditions?
    • How do the staff describe that the treatment needs to be designed to achieve lasting behavioural change?
    • How do the staff describe that the optimal group of youth needs to be designed from the youth's treatment time and treatment content?

The frame of knowledge used in the thesis contains the research results in this area but also the theory that subsequently was developed from the research produced. In the frame of knowledge, there are three key concepts presented, organization, lasting behavioural change and group of youth, which are relevant to both the aim as to the questions at issue.

Based on the aim of the study a qualitative research approach was chosen to understand each interviewee’s lifeworld and to see from their perspective and experiences. Semi-structured interviews were accomplished with four informants, all staff at the selected institution. The interviews were recorded with a Dictaphone and transcribed verbatim in order to be subject to analysis. As a concrete method of analysis, meaning condensation was used inspired by the phenomenological approach in the study. The result shows that there are many components in the themes organization, lasting behavioural change and group of youth which affects the chances of a positive treatment outcome and that informants' descriptions is alignment with previous research findings. The essence found in the results is different kinds of conditions. It means that the institution and its staff need conditions for example, economy, policies, methods, theories, staffing, skills development, structure and environment. If the organization can give the institution the right conditions with clear definitions, increases the chances of a positive treatment outcome significantly.

    Abstract [en]

Mental illness in the workplace brings with it significant costs: for the individual, the organization he or she belongs to, and for society at large. These issues arise from several different causes that can occur in the workplace, such as too demanding a pace, dealing with very complex tasks, and having a lack of influence over one's own schedule. Many caregivers work for the municipalities. This group stands out with an exceptionally high rate of medical leave, a trend that does not seem to subside in the near future. Employers and management have a special responsibility to ensure a good work environment and strive to prevent illness at work. Because of this I've found reason to study workplaces in the municipal care sector, and try to find out what management at these locations are doing to actively maintain and improve the health of their employees. I've chosen head of units over residence with special services for adults.

The purpose of the study is to find out how head of units is dealing with the work environment from a health perspective. With a qualitative approach I wanted to use interviews with middle management staff to study their methods for working with the health of their staff according to the demand-control-support model. The results show that they use methods to create clear guidelines and make sure that people acquire the skills to handle the demands of their work. A sense of control is facilitated primarily by creating forums for discussion, where questions can be asked. These forums are also part of the social support given from middle management to their staff. Other methods that increase the social support in the workplace are developing clear communications between head of units and staff, and different kinds of relation-building exercises.

    Abstract [en]

In this study, the purpose is to examine and analyze the experiences of people who have had an alcohol and/or drug addiction. What are their perception and experience of the social environment’s views on them and their abuse? Further, it is to highlight and discuss if and how these attitudes affects them. To answer that, the following questions have been used: How do people who have had an alcohol and/or drug addiction experience the way people in their surrounding look at them and their abuse? What was crucial for these people when it comes to get out of their addiction? How can this be understood from a stigma perspective? Today, many claims that the problem of alcohol and drug abuse is not just the drugs, but that an increasing amount of people are living under negative social pressure. Via stigmatization this creates personal inconveniences such as anxiety, self-destructiveness and a poor selfimage. This leads to an even more developed conflict according to traditional norms and behaviors, which in turn leads to further stigma reactions. These reactions strengthens the problems and results in an even more negative and deviant spiral. The investigastion has a qualitative design based on an phenomenological approach. The method for data collection is a combination of semi-structured and narrative interviews. To analyze our empirical results, we use the method of purpose analysis which focuses on the meaning and importance of ur own assumptions and interpretations. We have thus become co-creators of the interviews and the meaning of the texts. The result of the study shows that people with alcohol and drug addiction may feel that negative views on them have an impact for their continued deviant behavior. It also shows that these people have been stigmatized by others and that they therefore have a poor selfimage. Furthermore, the result shows that fellowship is a prerequisite for the possibility of people with alcohol and drug addiction to improve their self-image, to be able to abandon their addiction and continue to live a life without drugs

Teaching Civic Orientation for New Residents in Sweden: on Competence Development and Knowledge Sharing in a Growing Profession2017In: Uddevalla Symposium 2017: Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Industrial Dynamics in Internationalized Regional Economies: Revised papers first presented at the 20th Uddevalla Symposium 15-17 June, 2017, Trollhättan, Sweden / [ed] Iréne Bernhard, Trollhättan: University West , 2017, p. 165-178Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Due to the increasing number of refugees in Sweden, there is increased pressure on integration organizations to educate new residents about their rights and obligations in the new country. In Sweden, this is done with a mandatory course in civic orientation for those who get a residence permit. The courses are held in the native language of the new residents, thus increasing the demand for people with both language and pedagogical skills to hold civic orientation courses. The civic orientation classes include participants with different backgrounds and ages. The only common denominator among the course participants is the language. Thus, it isnot conventional teaching where students have more characteristics in common, and integration workers are not conventional teachers since not all of them are professional, trained educators. Therefore, we claim that we see a new profession in the making since these integration workers are recruited as integration workers in Sweden on the basis of their individual background rather than on formal training. In order to illuminate this new profession, this study compares and contrasts thework situation, processes of competence development and knowledge sharing by integration workers in a small and a big city in two different municipalities in west Sweden. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with eight integration workers and two course coordinators. The analysis was based on the dynamic theory of organizational knowledge creation by Nonaka (1994). Results indicated that the work situations share similarities in relation to how the courses were organized and planned for. However, organizational differences became evident due to the number of integration workers, quality management, employee support, and possibilities for knowledge sharing. These differences also created varied difficulties in how to improve courses and learn from other civic orientation teachers. It is concluded that there is a need for better national coordination and knowledge sharing on both the individual and organizational level. The study suggests that there should be a dynamic, interactive national support system where integration workers could systematically and individually share experiences to improve the quality of the civic orientation courses. This becomes essential since local conditions create huge variations regarding experience-based improvement of thecourses, thus jeopardizing both content and process quality of the mandatory courses by putting all responsibility on the individual teacher.

"Jamen, hur går det med integrationen?": En fallstudie om integrationsarbete i en svensk kommun2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Since the 1980s participation has been discussed increasingly. Participation can both improve the efficiency of the organization and for the individual user it can be a successful factor in care and treatment. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze how therapists view the importance of participation, how participation is implemented by the therapists as well as highlight the obstacles therapist experience while offering participation. The central questions for the study are

: How do the therapists define participation? How do the therapists view the importance of participation in the drug treatment of alcohol? How do therapists implement participation? What obstacles do the therapists meet in its discretion to promote participation?

Key concepts for the study are users, addiction and abuse. A description of treatment methods, user participation and evidence-based practice is entered to the understanding of the study.

The theoretical perspectives are participation, street-level bureaucracy with focus on discretion and power theory. The theories have been used for the construction of the interview guide and in the analyzing of the results. The study has a qualitative approach and is based on five interviews. The interviews were carried out individually with one interviewer. The interviewer used an interview guide during the interviews that contained themes and related issues. The interviews were transcribed in order to facilitate the analysis. In the analyzing the transcript were coded. The codes were then thematized and summarized. The results of the interviews are in the analysis set in relation to the purpose, issues, theory and previous research. The study's results and the conclusion is that participation is to be sought and is a factor for a successful outcome of the therapy. Meanwhile, there are obstacles in the process of implementing participation such as the power and the discretion of the therapists.

Awareness of participation is central in social pedagogy. The results of this study view that drug therapists consider participation as important. Studies like this are needed for social work and social pedagogy as it leads to knowledge of participation. At the same time, it is important that it do not stop at just knowledge as participation must also be applied in the daily work

Samspela med 400 kg häst: en kvalitativ studie om hästunderstödd terapi som kompletterande behandlingsmetod för individer med psykisk ohälsa2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine how a municipality in Sweden is working to give the people living in homelessness access to a home. The questions we sought to answer were: what kind of support is organized for people experiencing homelessness? What are the social workers´ perceptions of how support should be designed? What possibilities and difficulties exist for people experiencing homelessness to get an opportunity to achieve participation in a social community? We used a qualitative research method by interviewing professionals in the public and nonprofit sectors and examine how this work is carried out. The interviews have been processed and analyzed based on a sentence analysis. Our theories have covered the role of social pedagogy, the significance of strategies to combat homelessness, inclusion, exclusion and social support. We also have associated what significance power has on an individual and structural level for the individual's ability to achieve recognition in the society. The results of the study has shown that in order to give people living in homelessness a chance to participate in society, it is crucial that they have a home and that this in combination with a well-functioning support on the individual's own terms

Towards Roma Empowerment and Social Inclusion Through Work-Integrated Learning2015Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The Roma people are the largest ethnic minority group in the EU and all over, they have been subject to prejudice, stigma, discrimination and oppression. Thus, Roma are the most economically and socially excluded and marginalized group in Europe. The Roma living in Sweden are no exception; many are on the margins of society and face problems of social exclusion, institutional discrimination, low education, unemployment, and poor objective health. The Roma have been treated as a helpless group in need of "expert" help and action from the authorities. They have usually not been permitted to actively participate in adjusting efforts to their needs and situation. An alternative approach to the Roma situation is to allow the Roma to take the leading role and to initiate processes and activities concerning the group. These were the foundations for the 3-year health promotion project based on participatory action research (PAR) initiated in West Sweden in 2009. Through work-integrated learning(WIL) and the principle of training the trainers, the purpose of the programme was to strengthen Roma empowerment and participation in society, enabling Roma-led integration. The overall aim of the PhD thesis was to analyse and elaborate a WIL model to be applied inempowerment and adult education for the Roma minority- and other vulnerable groups in similar situation. The thesis is based on five papers: Paper 1 aimed to examine how 14 Roma adolescents in West Sweden perceive the concepts of health, well-being and quality of life, and further, to investigate the degree to which theyconsider themselves able to cope with their own life situation within these areas. The data, comprising six interviews, was analysed through qualitative content analysis. The most common understanding of health and well-being was to feel good, secure, happy and having awide social network of family and friends. Health and well-being were considered in a collective perspective, thus controversy earlier studies, the respondents perceived their health and well-being to be good. Freedom, independency, education and employment were the most important elements of QoL. Social support was the most frequently used coping strategy.

The Roma adolescents preferred the tight relationship within the Roma community and associated mostly with Roma, a phenomenon previously referred to as homophily. The processof homophily seemed to be a salutogenic factor and a general resistant resource of the Roma adolescents and hence health-enhancing. Homophily was suggested as a determinant factor of health.Paper 2 aimed to explore how Roma people in West Sweden understand health, well-being,and quality of life, and how they cope with their life-situation. The data, consisting of 27 interviews (n = 33), were analysed qualitatively using a phenomenological hermeneutic approach. The findings indicated that the respondents perceived health as a resource and an ability to self-manage. Crucial elements of the respondents' health perception were being employed, having an education, social support from family and friends, freedom and security, and involvement in society. The findings demonstrated that the respondents perceived their health and life situation as good, despite being marginalized and discriminated. A possible explanation to this is what the respondents described as survival strategies. As a result of decenniums of oppression, the Roma have developed survival strategies helping them to cope with the situation and to survive. Paper 3 aimed to analyse whether there is connection between health literacy and empowerment. The paper is based on a literature search conducted in December 2013. Of the total 303 initial hits, no articles primarily addressing the issue were found; yet five articles were identified taking up on both health literacy and empowerment, hence reviewed in more detail. The five articles acknowledged a nexus between health literacy and empowerment, though the nexus itself was never discussed in specific. The paper suggests that for health literacy to be critical to empowerment, the focus has to be on social determinants of health and the involved individuals', groups and/or communities perceptions on health and health needs defined by themselves. Such a perspective will build on the genuine needs of the people in concern. The paper proposes functional- and interactive health literacy as another way to label capacity building for health and empowerment, and critical health literacy as a way to describe empowerment. Hence, health literacy might be regarded as a tool for empowerment. Health literacy is considered not to automatically lead to empowerment. Health literacy as such might be increased by health education. Crucial for empowerment is to achieve the critical level of health literacy including an ability to question the prevailing power relations and societal conditions and reflecting on these, a strengthened sense of power, self-esteem and self efficacyand an ability to utilize these resources to engage in social and political action for change.Paper 4 aimed to explore how participatory action research (PAR) and work integrated learning (WIL) might function as empowering tools in the Roma inclusion process and to propose a working model to use in empowerment of the Roma minority- and other vulnerable groups in similar situation. The data were collected and produced continuously during the project and consisted of interviews, self-evaluation reports and written essays by the seven Roma participants, participatory observations, research groups' workshop notes, 21 monthly project reports, the project plan, syllabus of the WIL training programme and notes from ajoint planning workshop. The data were considered as a whole and analysed in a triangulating fashion using hermeneutical understanding inspired by heuristic research. Through improved abilities to mobilise the local Roma community for social change, the participants' critical health literacy improved, allowing them to experience a greater control over their own lives and integration processes. The results indicate an increased empowerment of the local coordinators indicating that WIL may be a worthwhile approach in strengthening the individual empowerment of Roma people. Based on the findings, health literacy was suggested as a catalyst in the empowerment process, serving as a tool for analyzing and describing the process of empowerment.Paper 5 aimed to analyse the health promotion project from the Roma participants' perspective. The focus was on the participants' perceived individual empowerment and perceptions on their contribution to the common good and community empowerment. The data, consisting of interviews and self-evaluation reports of the Roma participants, participatory observations, newspaper articles with interviews of the participants and 21 monthly reports, were analysed through an approach that comes closest to hermeneutical phenomenology. The findings indicate that the WIL approach, the participating nature of the programme, and the trust and support from both the Roma and the non-Roma facilitators, were essential for the development of empowerment. Three main themes emerged portraying the participants' psychological empowerment: strengthened Roma identity, sense of power and sense of enculturated social inclusion. Sense of enculturated social inclusion demonstrated the participants "new" way of understanding social inclusion; turning social inclusion from something they feared to something they embraced. As the participants realized that social inclusion would not require them the let go of their Roma identity and culture, their Roma identity was strengthened, they became more hopeful, felt more in control and felt generally better. Despite of limited time and resources for local community directed activities, the participants perceived that improvements were achieved at the local level. In conclusions, the findings indicate that when based on the specific health needs of the people involved, basic/functional- and interactive health literacy together comprise the same idea as capacity building for health that might lead to empowerment. What found to be essential for the Roma local coordinators development of empowerment was the combination of the WIL approach, the participatory nature of the project, the trust and support from the non-Roma facilitators and Roma colleagues, and the perception of being respected as human beings and as equals. The local coordinators empowerment consisted of strengthened Roma identity, sense of power and sense of enculturated social inclusion. This indicates that the suggested WIL model/approach, comprising a participatory approach with health literacy as a tool may be a worthwhile strategy in empowering Roma people and enhancing their self-led social inclusion process. A possible road for Roma self-led integration, hence, might be through a process of enculturated social inclusion. This may also be the case for other vulnerable groups in similar situations. Further research and interventions are needed however, in order to elaborate and verify WILs' potential and sustainability in empowering other minority- and vulnerable groups

    Abstract [en]

The basis for this article was a health promotion program based on participatory action research and work-integrated learning (WIL). Seven Roma people were employed and trained to work as local coordinators to empower the local Roma community by strengthening their participation in society and their sense of community, as well as to promote self-led integration. The study aimed to analyze the program from the Roma coordinators' perspectives, focusing on perceived individual empowerment and perceptions of contribution to the common good and to community empowerment. The findings, based on qualitative data, primarily interviews with the Roma coordinators, indicated that the WIL approach, the participatory nature of the program, and the trust and support from the Roma colleagues and non-Roma facilitators were essential for the development of empowerment. Three main themes emerged that portrayed the participants' psychological empowerment: strengthened Roma identity, a sense of power, and a sense of enculturated social inclusion.

The Nexus Between Health Literacy and Empowerment2016In: SAGE Open, E-ISSN 2158-2440, Vol. 6, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article was to explore what is known about the assumed connection between health literacy and empowerment and how this connection is portrayed in the scientific literature. If empowerment is an outcome of health literacy, what are the mechanisms behind this process? A literature search conducted in 2013 yielded 216 hits, of which five met the inclusion criteria, and thus were read in depth and analyzed through a narrative-review approach. The findings indicate that health literacy might be regarded as a tool for empowerment but does not automatically lead to empowerment. Health literacy might be increased by health education. Crucial for empowerment is to achieve the critical level of health literacy including an ability to question and reflect on the prevailing power relations and societal conditions; increased senses of power, self-esteem, and self-efficacy; and an ability to utilize these resources to engage in social and political action for change. This article suggests that for health literacy to be critical to empowerment, there must be a focus on social health determinants and individuals’ subjective perceptions of health and health needs. The article proposes functional and interactive health literacy as a form of capacity building for health and empowerment and critical health literacy as a way to describe empowerment. This scoping review indicates a research gap and a need for future research examining the relationship between health literacy and empowerment.

    Abstract [en]

The study is aimed to investigate the social workers´ experiences of living conditions regarding unaccompanied refugee children and investigate obstacles and possibilities to act in accordance with the best interest of the child in case management and cooperation regarding unaccompanied refugee children and their cases. In the study, I have used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The material was analyzed from a systems theory perspective. The terms action space and collaboration were employed in the analysis. I conducted semi structured interviews with four social workers who are all part of a network for social workers who manage cases of unaccompanied refugee children in central Sweden. The informants had different length of experience in managing involving unaccompanied children. The study reveals several factors that in different ways affected the social worker´s action space, the collaboration with other agencies and hence his or her ability to act in accordance with the best interest of the child.

The informants spoke of that even though the children had different backgrounds they all shared the experiences of having fled the home country. The children´s living conditions were characterized by difficulties and the children often had experiences of abuse and were forced to grow up fast. When unaccompanied children come to Sweden to seek asylum, there are many agents involved in their cases, which can create a lot of confusion for the child. The asylum process is stressful for the child and can yield a feeling of uncertainty. Cultural differences are often difficult to manage and unaccompanied children have the need to get assisted in learning to with cultural conflicts that arise. The informants argued that it is important already from the initial contact, that the child is met with respect and consideration.

Perceived barriers were the children´s lack of trust in authorities, lack of effective mechanisms for investigation, not to speak the same language – the need for an interpreter, lack of knowledge and collaboration between agencies. Perceived opportunities have been, the children´s own resources, relatively good economic resources, to build bridges between the different agents and the social worker´s network. The compiled results reveal that there were more perceived obstacles than possibilities

The impact of aging on regional employment: Linking spatial econometrics and population projections for a scenario analysis of future labor market outcomes in the Nordic region2014In: Economics and Business Letters, E-ISSN 2254-4380, Vol. 3, no 4, p. 232-246Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ageing is a key challenge for many countries. The purpose of this paper is to simulate how ageing affects future regional labour market outcomes. We develop a simulation procedure based on data for 71 Nordic regions in Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The procedure combines spatial econometrics and population projections for scenario analyses of future employment patterns up to 2021. Compared to a "benchmark scenario" based on projections of the working age population, we find that predicted regional labour market outcomes tell a much richer story if a combination of estimation results and population projections is used. To this end, our results can be helpful for economic policymaking, which is constantly in need of accurate regional labor market forecasts.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The study's purpose is to study professionals' description of their work with children in families with alcohol abuse problems. From there we also want to highlight the various support methods that they use in their work. We used a qualitative approach in the form of interviews. The interviews were semi-structured and an interview guide was used in the various interview sessions. The result shows that the most common method of aid for children with addicted parents is support groups in various forms. The result also shows that parents who abuse alcohol affect both themselves and their children. Parents living with shame and simultaneously in a lie when they try to hide their addiction. The children find themselves in a similar situation when they, among other things take the blame while they are very loyal to their parents. This means that children have to carry a secret to the surroundings. The professionals' work becomes complicated, as these children are difficult to detect and offer help.

    Abstract [en]

Since 2017 Folktandvarden Vastra Gotaland has worked with its organizational culture to develop its basic values and to be able to work towards a desired culture. By a distinctly organizational culture, it becomes more clearer what the organization stands for. Managers and leaders are seen as key people in living and developing the culture. The purpose of my case study is to describe how clinic managers address the change process with culture and values as well as how their experience is. The study was carried out with a qualitative approach, where I conducted semi-structured interviews to enable a deeper understanding of the clinic heads' perception. The result shows that most of the managers find that cultural work is difficult to deal with. There is a lack of time and the work is perceived as unclear, which makes it difficult for the managers to keep the commitment up. Much of the work is carried out locally at the clinics and therefore contributes to strengthening subcultures instead of promoting an overall organizational culture. One of the conclusions from the study is that leadership is of great importance to how well the cultural work falls out. The heads of the clinic need support and knowledge to be able to drive the cultural work forward. The management needs to clarify the structure and process and have a closer dialogue with the clinic managers about what is expected of them in the next phase.

Man är där för barnets skull: En kvalitativ studie om umgängesstödjares arbete utifrån ett omsorgs- och rättighetsperspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Within- and between-person and group variance in behavior and beliefs in cross-cultural longitudinal data2018In: Journal of Adolescence, ISSN 0140-1971, E-ISSN 1095-9254, Vol. 62, p. 207-217Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract This study grapples with what it means to be part of a cultural group, from a statistical modeling perspective. The method we present compares within- and between-cultural group variability, in behaviors in families. We demonstrate the method using a cross-cultural study of adolescent development and parenting, involving three biennial waves of longitudinal data from 1296 eight-year-olds and their parents (multiple cultures in nine countries). Family members completed surveys about parental negativity and positivity, child academic and social-emotional adjustment, and attitudes about parenting and adolescent behavior. Variance estimates were computed at the cultural group, person, and within-person level using multilevel models. Of the longitudinally consistent variance, most was within and not between cultural groups—although there was a wide range of between-group differences. This approach to quantifying cultural group variability may prove valuable when applied to quantitative studies of acculturation.

    Abstract [en]

The youth is a phase in life where development, learning and health have a big impact on how life is later formed. There is a current debate in society about the fact that mental illness among young people in Sweden has increased in recent years, this places high demands on the social sector on how needs are met and managed. The school is a natural arena for young people because of the implemented education act and is therefore imperative in compulsory school. Actors who work in the school operations therefore have the opportunity to create good conditions for good prospects.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of school counselors in a health-promoting perspective regarding mental illness within the school´s activities. The ambition was to arrive at a result section, where the authors could increase the knowledge of how the profession can and should be used in the work with mental ill-health among students.

The study is based on a qualitative method where four semi-structured interviews with school counselors were conducted in four different municipalities with geographical distance and different sizes. The result has been analyzed with the help of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which means that the perspective of school counselors, their own thoughts and values will be highlighted.

The result showed that school counselors experienced both opportunities and limitations in their work with mental illness. However, it was difficult to discern the profession´s specific professional role in the school´s activities, since the perception of curative work was ambiguous. It emerged that there was a lack of knowledge into how the profession´s competences can be useful as their professional role is vaguely formulated. The result of this study clarifies the work of school counselors and contributes with knowledge about how their competencies can and should be used most appropriately in the work of mental illness.

    Abstract [en]

Social pedagogy is a relatively unexplored area in the Swedish school-system and there are different opinions about what social pedagogy could, and indeed already contribute with out in the Swedish schools. The study, a thesis C-level aims to capture the social pedagogical work out a specific profession perspective, the school counselors. The empirical material consists of semi-structured research interviews with five school counselors who are all trained social pedagogues. The study has an exploratory purpose where the core is to provide a picture of how the school counselors themselves perceive that they use social pedagogy in their professional role as school counselors. The theoretical framework is based on a social pedagogical perspective built on traditional social pedagogical thoughts and theories. These theories and concepts all focuses on the individual that shapes their identity in relation to their environment and the learning processes that can be found in the interaction between the individual and society. Theories about community, participation, empowerment, dialogue, inclusion and exclusion has served as starting points to consider the experiences given by the school counselors. The material was analyzed with the analytical IPA and resulted in four broad themes: Relationship building, Creating socializing processes, Inclusion and Focus on what works. In the discussion section the study's relevance to the social field and the current situation in Swedish schools today is addressed.
