    Learning integration-work through transnational digitalized courses2017In: INTED2017 Proceedings, 2017, p. 8018-8018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In both political discussions and integration assessments questions are often raised about social services role in inclusion for people of foreign descent. Such questions are highly relevant in a contemporary society that is characterized by growing social and cultural differentiation. The overall aim of this presentation is to contribute to our understanding of how knowledge about integration work is developed by students who takes part in a webbased, transnational course where they use digital learning platforms for communication, coordination and organisation of learning activities. Analytically, such a focus is pursued employing a socio-cultural perspective on learning where practical actions and the design of the course have been scrutinized. The motive for introducing a webbased transnational course in the area of integration was that there were an increasing amount of refugees migrating to Europe. Integration became a part of everyday work for a lot of professions, teachers, nurses and more. However, working with integration was not something that their professional education supported but they all expressed a need for more knowledge. But integration workers are assumed to have specific knowledge that is necessary to realize their work tasks. In the work with creating an integration-course one conclusion was that all welfare work is generic, which means we cannot only look at the content of the work, instead one must put it into more multifaceted perspective that includes several professionals knowledge domains, service-organization assignment, legislations and cultures related. Simultaneously, another university had the same ideas, which resulted in a transnational webbased course with students from different professional fields. All students, as well as the teachers, where interviewed in the beginning and in the end of the course about their expectations about the content and the form. The results demonstrate that using learning platforms to make sense in transnational education settings presupposes extensive knowledge of the indexicality of categories and concepts, something that could be assumed if the participants' had a shared professional history. Instead, as the students have different backgrounds the teachers have to account for the local hermeneutics needed, and for the knowledge embedded in information and categories. It is in the process of reliving, creating and exposing the meaning of information, that students and teachers actually bring information in education to life. In further development of transnational webbased courses it is important to not see this development as solely technical or organizational questions. To develop courses that increase the possibilities for students in different faculties with different routines etc. to make sense of information may be a much more demanding task than it seems to be. Such boundary-crossing teaching are nevertheless of great importance for the development of integration work as well as pedagogical competence in higher education.

Standardization and Professional Knowledge in Integration Work2021In: International Journal of Social Work and Human Services Practice, ISSN 2332-6832, E-ISSN 2332-6840, Vol. 8, no 2, p. 17-26Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1970s, the government in Sweden has developed many activities aimed at facilitating immigrants’ integration processes and their sense of belonging; one such activity that emerged in the 2010s is civic orientation. This activity is characterized by a high degree of standardization of both processes and content. The intention is for local activities and participants to adjust to general levels and standards. But even though standards can be seen as a solution for a set of problems, one must consider that standards do not perform any tasks by themselves; their functions depend on organizational routines, resources available, and staff members’ use of the standards. Therefore, one must consider how integration workers handle standards and how they bridge standards of routines and procedures with participants, immigrants, responses, and needs. The interest in this study concerns how such a dilemma intervenes at the local level and what it means for professional knowledge and autonomy. This study takes place at an integration unit in Sweden where integration workers meet in workshops to interpret standards and find ways to adapt them to local needs. The results show how cultural and pedagogical awareness form the basis for professional knowledge and how this also creates a space for action but also how standards form a structure through which expectations and demands are understood and form arguments and interaction patterns.

The cultural brokering power of social pedagogy in education for Roma students2019In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, Vol. 9, no 1, p. 5-17Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Throughout history, people have concerned themselves with how people can live and work together in an inclusive society that encourages cooperative and productive bonds. This question is highly relevant in contemporary society that is characterized by growing migration and social differentiation. One, maybe obvious, solution is to provide people the opportunity to participate in education, creating conditions for a more inclusive society. In that context, questions are often raised about the relation between education and integration of immigrants. Social pedagogy aims to combine educational and social interventions. This study takes place at a school for adult Roma students and the aim is to identify and explain social pedagogical strategies with respect to inclusion processes. The results show how theoretical foundations of social pedagogy works as a €˜facilitator€™ and guide the teachers’ actions. By taking cultural belonging into account, shed light on issues relating to learning processes as well as mobilization and inclusion.

Ett levande bevis på att detta fungerar: En kvalitativ studie om psykisk ohälsa och återhämtning2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Etnicitet ur sportjournalistikens perspektiv: En kritisk diskursanalys av skildringen av idrottsmän i svensk media.2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore how sports journalism can include and/or exclude athletics from a national community. This study put emphasis on finding patterns from articles by Swedish sport media on non-ethnic Swedish athletics. The theories central to this study are ethnicity and nationalism, as these concepts contain reflections on why certain groups of people are excluded and/or included. Norman Faircloghs critical discourse analytical model has been selected for the study method that analyzes texts in three levels: the text level, discursive practice and social practice. Four non-ethnic Swedish athletes have been chosen to explore how they were portrayed in the media. Data were collected from Swedish newspapers, sport websites and blogs that portrayed the selected athletes. Discourses of media, nationalism and ethnicity emerged through a critical analysis of the data collection. The results of the study show that the selected athletes are included in to the Swedish national community through their achievements in their respective sport.

Perceived resource scarcity and environmental behaviors – how do they relate?2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Sustainability challenges largely have to do with valuing past, present and future resources. History is full of examples of humans and societies that threat, react to changes in, and preserve resources they depend on. However, there is surprisingly little research on attitudal or behavioral reactions to decreasing or increasing resource levels in the fieldof environmental studies. This study aims to investigate the impact of individual experience-based subjective evaluations of different types of resources on environmental attitudes and behavior. The study is explorative since the relation between subjective resources and environmental attitudes and behavior to our knowledge has never been investigated. There are good reasons to expect both negative and positive correlations between perceived scarcity of resources and environmental behavior (partly depending on what resource we have in mind). The theoretical model is based on an understanding of environmental behavior as a collective action problem based in a social dilemma. The link between perceived scarcity of resources and environmental attitudes and behavior is investigated in a survey to the Swedish public (N = 978), which also controls for people's social value orientation (SVO), subjective well-being, and generalized trust and trust in environmental institutions, as well as income, age and gender.

Gemenskapens betydelse för personer som är på väg ur ett långvarigt drogmissbruk: En kvalitativ studie kring deltagarnas egna perspektiv på gemenskap2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to gain a deeper understanding of the individual's own experiences on the way out of the abuse. The study was conducted with a hermeneutic / phenomenological approach in which qualitative interviews were conducted with five people including 2 women and 3 men. The selection criteria were that they'd had a long been abuse, and taken out of it for at least two years. Age ranged between 30 and 70 years, although their current living situation was diverse. It was difficult to find research involving individuals' experiences of the Community in relation to the road of drug abuse, hence it is still a relatively unexplored area which made it all the more interesting to study. In this study is the individual's experiences in focus to get a deeper knowledge and understanding of the phenomenon. The result showed the way out of drug abuse may look and be perceived and how the community has been, and is, an important part of this process. The motivation to get out of drug abuse differed for the respondents. Several expressed the fellowship of other former addicts was important to them as a motivation in your own process. To maintain contact with the families and especially their children have also served as support and motivation. The results also showed that their life today works well even if they are still in the process to remain drug-free. Most interview participants are now living drug free and are motivated to continue their journey in life with experiences of abuse that led to and that many of them want to help others who are in the same process.

Health and Well-being Among Immigrated Women in Higher Education: An Integrative Literature Review2023Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Society in general and higher education in particular need to find constructive strategies for the partly changed situation that the multicultural society entails. A successful integration promotes health and a new identity in the new society. Immigrant women´s experiences show aspects that influence their well-being and inclusion in society. Immigrant women encounter many barriers and are a group at high risk of marginalization in higher education. Hence, increased insight into immigration research is significant for the organization of higher education, especially focusing on women´s health and well-being within this area.

Purpose of the study: The purpose is to provide an overview of experienced health and well-being among immigrant women in the context of higher education and the possible facilitators and barriers they encounter.

Methods: This study was designed as an integrative literature review. Databases were searched for international scientific articles. The final material comprised 14 empirical articles published in peer-reviewed journals. Also, a manual search was conducted, involving checking reference lists of the collected articles.

Findings: The findings showed that immigrant women in higher education are perseverant. According to women’s experiences, higher education studies challenged traditional gender roles and created tensions. The women described stress and anxiety during their studies

Conclusion: Several problematic aspects related to health and well-being were evident for immigrant women in higher education, while possible facilitators appeared to be less prominent and need further exploration.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: In line with the rise of globalization, the number of transnational families is increasing. This means that more and more children and young adults navigate between different social and cultural contexts where they encounter linguistic, cultural and social differences that affect their identity development, belonging and well-being. By being aware of and understanding these consequences, we can create the conditions to provide the right support and help to children in transnational families.

Purpose: This study examines how children and young adults in transnational families construct their identity based on multiple cultural backgrounds and what opportunities and challenges they face in their everyday lives.

Method: This study is a systematic qualitative literature study with social constructionism as a theoretical approach and includes 14 scientific articles.

Results: Research shows that children and young adults in transnational families actively shape their identity by navigating between different social and cultural contexts. This process opens up opportunities for increased understanding, creativity and intercultural competence through exposure to different cultures and languages. At the same time, they face challenges that may include the loss of social networks and the experience of discrimination. Identity formation is influenced by factors such as family background, cultural origin, geographic location, social network and language skills, as well as individual experiences.

Brukarinflytande - en fråga om att bruka makt: En kvalitativ studie om brukarinflytande för personer med psykiska funktionsnedsättningar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The present study aims to, through a critical age perspective, describe and illustrate the structural conditions of the age category of children based on the information about treatment for gambling problems provided by municipal websites. The study has a quantitative character and in order to answer the study's questions, a content analysis of municipal websites (N = 119) was conducted. 52,1% of those websites contained information on treatment for gambling problems (n = 62). The result showed a statistically significant difference in the distribution regarding information by municipal websites on treatment for gambling problems ( χ² = 9,478a , df = 2, p = ,009) and treatment methods ( χ² = 13,400a , df =2, p = ,001) between the structural age categories. Throughout, age as an organizing principle was updated, and the age category of children was directed to information about treatment for gambling problems through municipal websites to a considerably lower extent than other age categories. This brought to light an age hierarchy and from a children perspective it is possible to state that children's structural conditions were unequal. When this was consistent, it is reasonable to assume that there is systematic inequality, which raises social stratification.

The problem-presentation in integration work: Construction of information needs for newly arrived immigrants2016In: 44th NERA Congress is ‘Social Justice, Equality and Solidarity in Education?, 2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Today people migrate and leave societies that cannot secure human life and safety, where one's worth as a human is being violated. People are fleeing not only from, but also to places. When arriving to a new society it needs to be described, to make it possible to meet it and act in it. In dialogue and interaction with groups, society therefor must find and describe models for inclusion. In Sweden, as residence permits are obtained, so called ‘integration workers’ are engaged in Civic Orientation, to support the process by means of which individuals are to become knowledgeable enough to exert their agency as citizens (knowing your rights and obligations).

The overall object is to create linkages between the state and the ‘newly arrived immigrants’. Civic orientation is a course for 60 h, regulated by Swedish law and EU has given directions that every member state is supposed to have some form of civic education, but every country is responsible for organizing and develop their own content. Often, in Sweden, the integration workers themselves have immigrated to Sweden and the course is given in the mother tongue of the immigrants.

This study is a workplace study with interest in professional knowledge to create stable and flexible knowledge in the work, understood as how the workers construct relevance for their doings in interaction. In this study the specific interest is to understand the construction of newcomers' information needs, the problem being worked with. The need of information is understood as not given or static, but as a (re)produced in regular social practices (Edwards, 2005), and both integrationworkers and newcomers mutually orient to a set of ideas when constructing needs. The analytical interest is also to outline how some views is made more significant or more authoritative with respect to the matter at hand (Heritage and Raymond, 2005).

In reasoning about needs, the access to countries, as epistemic domains is often used to make claims about what kind of information that is needed. In other words, the country that the immigrants comes from is often arranged to be the source of knowledge. The data material was generated through video recordings and interviews over a period of 1.5 years, from backstage (workmeetings) and frontstage work (with ‘newly arrived immigrants’). I identify two patterns that are analytically distinctive when looking at how the problem- presentation in civic orientation is negotiated. Either is it the knowledge about the Swedish society that is the matter at hand, or is it to educate those who have not yet come to a certain ´understanding´. This are two very different worktasks, but they seems to be connected in the practice.

    Abstract [en]

Societal efforts to support the integration of newly arrived immigrants have been repeatedly highlighted in the political debate in Sweden and they are described as inadequate and ineffective. Demands have been made for improvements and one of the designated efforts is Civic Orientation (CO). The Civic Orientation programme is a course about Swedish society, targeting newly arrived refugees and their relatives who have received a residence permit. It provides basic information about Swedish society to aid and expedite integration (SFS 2010:1138). The criticism has led to the production of written, national instructions containing correct information that should be provided by the civil servants in CO. The aim is that quality should be high and equal across the country. The overall aim of the dissertation is to deepen the understanding and knowledge of the work-process to develop standard guidelines, that will be used in a welfare sector, where it is difficult to establish definitive knowledge. The dissertation's purpose is also to deepen the understanding and knowledge of instruction work as a collaborative activity. The term 'instruction work' covers both work that experts and managers undertake when they develop written guidelines, and work done when implementing these guidelines in local practice. The thesis is rooted in activity theory where work is viewed as a collaborative activity aimed at taking on a task, event or object, such as interpreting, paying attention, participating, thinking, and performing. The study involves five different categories of actors: a representative from the county administrative board, experts from various authorities and universities, coordinators and the head of a unit from a management group in a municipality, and integration workers, who are the local civil servants. The study is based on a field study where video recorded observations of meetings, lectures and workshops have been conducted. Semi structured interviews and written communication have also been used. The result shows that there are different perceptions of what work needs to be done to ensure that the instructions are correct. A variety of, sometimes contradictory, tasks developed: to make the information scientifically correct with multiple perspectives on social phenomena, to make educational simplification, to provide an ideal image of Sweden according to policy, or to describe Swedish society as irrational with hinders and obstacles (papers 1- 3). Another major task was to make the instructions politically neutral which meant producing information that was not offensive for external readers such as politicians and the general public (paper 1). When guideline models have been used for other welfare activities, the work is usually based on analysis of the needs of the target groups. That task took on an obscured role and was first noticed as important by the civil servants in the latter part when the material was used during implementation (papers 1, 3). A further result concerns the work of developing standard guidelines. The study shows that there is formal instruction work (paper 1) which is the planned work, most often done by experts and/or researchers, and informal instruction work (paper 2) often hidden and performed by civil servants in the implementation phase. This informal work is about transforming the instructions to be useful for the individual in the local situation. But the study also shows a third type of work - semi-formal instruction work (paper 3) that is also carried out by the local civil servants, where they, with their biographical and informal instruction work experience, try hard to influence formal instruction work. One conclusion is that it is more fruitful and accurate to perceive standardized instructions as dynamic and integrated in the practical work, than to see them as fixed by an externally controlled process. Developing standards to be used to improve practice is an ongoing fluid process that never ends, and that involves tensions and conflicts that need to be addressed.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how the treatment staffexperience and handles the work with girls who self-injure . In order to answer thesequestions we interviewed six people working at two different institutions where theyworked with girls who self-injure.

In this study, in summary, we see that it evokes many strong emotions in those who workwith these girls. We saw treatment staff expressing the need for support in their work tokeep work enjoyable but also to create an understanding of the girl's behavior.Treatment staff uses clear protocol dealing with a girl who is injured. The protocol arepartly for the other girls who live in the same housing so that there will not be a contagioneffect and partly for the individual girl who does not get the attention which otherwisewould reinforce the behavior. We also see that the treatment staff needs support in their work to maintain a goodtreatment for girls.

Our conclusion is that the staff group is the most important asset the treatment staff feelthat they have at work. Education is one of the important ways through which thetreatment staff maintain their enthusiasm to their work. Belonging to a cohesive workgroup provides staff with a feeling of security at their job place. Within a work group thereare also opportunities to reflect on difficult events. This allows the possibility to processwhat they experienced. Treatment personnel can despite an established approach feelambivalence in their work.

Who Cares and Who Pays?: The Stakeholders of Maritime Human Factors2009In: Human Factors in Ship Design & Operation: London, September 25-26, 2009, London: Royal Institute of Naval Architects , 2009, p. 69-76Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims at identifying the key stakeholders in maritime human factors and analyse their interest in, and power to influence the human factors issues. A stakeholder analysis is done and a model displays eight stakeholders from a vessel lifecycle perspective. It is concluded that the interest and the power to influence is much differentiated, largely due to the nature of shipping. An increased public interest in environmental, economic and socio-political sustainability has affected the environmental work in the industry and it is believed that pressure from consumers will lead to increased demands on shipping. It is further concluded that well operated shipping contribute to greater overall efficiency and economy and should offset higher unit freight costs resulting by the use of better maintained and managed ships.
