    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to explore how ads on Instagram can create a positive attitude for the recipient. This was investigated through a quantitative survey where the respondents, girls belonging to generation Z, got to choose between ads, identify what caught their interest and describe their experience of the ads. The results show that ads with human presence are chosen more often than those without human presence, and there is a slight advantage for those ads with visible face compared to those without visible face. The results also show that when the ads have a visible face, the human is the recipient’s main focus, while ads with a human presence without a visible face are considered to emphasize the product more. The ads with human presence are generally considered to be more inspiring while the most common experience of the ads without human presence is that they are informative. This study complements previous literature by arguing that human presence in itself is a powerful stimulus to capture the attention of recipients on Instagram. We conclude that human presence is a contributing factor to creating a positive attitude for the recipient on Instagram and that it is further enhanced if the ad has a visible face.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper draws on the experiences of work-integrated learning from a Swedish-Norwegian cross-sector research project where actors from university, industry, government and volunteer sector collaborate on city center development. The empirical setting of the present study consists of six smaller cities in rural municipalities with limited resources and experiences of collaboration with higher education institutions. The following research question is addressed: How can research and development projects serve as a vehicle for facilitating mutual knowledge exchange between academia and society in cross-sector and rural collaboration contexts? The aim is hence to suggest a tentative collaboration model that identify and integrate knowledge flows between actors involved in cross-sector collaborations in such setting. To gain deep insights in the complex dynamics of project collaboration we applied a mixed methods approach including surveys, structured, in-depth qualitative interviews, observations, workshops and student projects. The data collection was performed during 2016-2017. Findings indicate that trust, continuity, and relationship building are the basis vital for successful creation, development and maintenance of knowledge flows. Furthermore, there is a need to develop an integrative tool box with different methodological tools, work practices and strategies to plan, perform, compile to leverage the knowledge flows and coproduce sustainable results. Our tentative model aims to illustrate conceptualize lessons learned on work-integrated learning and collaboration with academia. We discuss how the model may support co-creative and mutual results over time.

    Abstract [en]

    Socio-economic development, in any society, includes many productive activities excluded in conventional economic analyses. This paper aims to critically uncover, explore and discuss how productive activities included in societal development are hidden by a monetary bias. By doing so, the paper strives to initiate a critical conceptual discussion related to what is generally indentified as weaknesses and relevant policies in regional development. The goal is to reach beyond convetional economic analyses to unlock and develop implications for conceptual models that can exted perceptions of societal development with its political, temporal and spatial meaning. The paper proceeds as follows: Firstly, through some illustrative empirical examples, uncover the meanings of ´economic´ activities from completely different contexts; Secondly, to explore the more general implications of a perspective/approach, inspired by Hägerstrand, which emphasizes political implications in time and space; Finally, to point out a conceptual discussion that enhances a broadened perspective for societal regional development that reaches beyond the conventional meanings of economic development.

    Abstract [sv]

    Inom ramen för Tillväxtanalys regeringsuppdrag att beskriva utvecklingen i och inom olika regioner har myndigheten valt att göra en översiktlig studie av pågående forskning kring landsbygders utveckling. Arbetet har genomförts av agronom Leif Berndtsson, Högskolan Väst.

    Studien har i huvudsak genomförts genom litteratursökning. Därtill kommer enkät- och intervjusvar från ett antal forskare samt aktörer inom landsbygdsområdet.

    I särskild bilaga redovisas 40 forskningsprojekt samt hänvisas till ca 100 papers från konferensen Nordic Rural Future, maj 2010.

    Rapporten utmynnar i ett antal slutsatser och förslag på förbättringar. Några av dem är följande:

    Forskningsfältet är mycket brett och svårdefinierat. Ordet landsbygd "avskärmar" en hel del forskning som faktiskt pågår, men där forskarna själva inte ser sig som "landsbygdsforskare" utan mer som ämnesinriktade inom exempelvis genus, jämställdhet, innovation, entreprenörskap el liknande. Det begränsar sökmöjligheterna av pågående forskning.

    Det vore önskvärt med ett tydligare landsbygdsfokus inom pågående forskning med inriktning mot klimatförändring och energiomställning. Det saknas t.ex. studier och forskning om vilka effekter och möjligheter en klimatomställning som det kan få för landsbygder och de människor som bor där.

    Den nyligen avslutade halvtidsutvärderingen av Landsbygdsprogrammet visar på att det finns behov av ytterligare forskning om hur man kan avläsa och mäta effekter av tillväxtstimulerande insatser. Utvärderarna har t.ex. haft uppenbara problem med att finna metoder för att avläsa effekter såväl inom de mer kvantitativa insatserna inom axel 1 och 2, som i de mer kvalitativa insatserna inom axel 3 och 4.

    Det vore vidare positivt med ett tydligare arbete för att föra ut forskningen till mer tillämpade insatser. I dagsläget satsas resurser på att återföra forskningsresultat till befintliga företag eller till nystartande företag via olika arenor som Inkubator, Innovationsbron, mm. Det finns ett behov av insatser för att föra ut mer samhällsinriktad forskning till praktisk tillämpning hos politiker, beslutsfattare, samhällsplanerare, regionutvecklare, m.fl.

    Flera forskare pekar på en obalans i tilldelningen av forskningsmedel inom landsbygdsområdet.

    Det är en förhoppning att översikten ger underlag för diskussioner och förslag som leder till en ökad förståelse för forskningen om landsbygders utveckling. I kapitlet slutsatser och rekommendationer finns många exempel på ett ökat tvärdisciplinärt synsätt för att stärka forskningsområdet. Detta skall inte tolkas som ett minskat behov av djup ämnesinriktad forskning. Snarare skall det ses som ett behov av att få de olika disciplinerna att öka sina kontaktytor med varandra. Det bör även i sin tur leda till en ökad förståelse och leda till fler insikter om de möjligheter som kan finnas inom landsbygdens områden. En förhoppning är att även forskningsfinansiärer kan se behov av att koppla ihop de vetenskapliga disciplinerna i större utsträckning.

    Slutligen ger de exempel som redovisas i rapportens bilaga en positiv bild av att det finns en pågående forskning, som om resultaten sprids, kan vara till nytta för landsbygdsområdet.

    Abstract: Two case studies of the implementation of contact centers (CCs) in Swedish municipalities were compared and analyzed. The purpose of the article is to focus on lessons learned from the perspectives of the management and the employees in the organizations according to the MOA-model. The research method used was semi-structured qualitative interviews with different personnel categories in both municipalities. According to our findings the implementation strategies varied among the two cases. The strategies affected the pace of implementation, attitudes and motivation aspects and understanding of the implementation. The potential of using registered information as a source for planning and decision-making was not fully utilized in the municipal organizations, although some statistics were produced. In both cases there was a combination of formal and informal learning strategies and flexible co-operation among the employees in the CCs which contributed to continuous learning processes and a good, co-operative working climate. Some learning challenges for the handling officers at the back offices were to adapt to a more process-oriented organization. Initially, many handling officers at the back-office were afraid of losing their jobs and work tasks to CC, contributing to negative attitudes towards CC, and hampering the learning process in taking part in the implementation process. The establishment of a CC is a comprehensive organizational change process affecting the whole municipal administration. A challenge for the municipalities is to formulate relevant strategies and manage the implementation in order to involve all employees.

    Collaboration and learning are vital for development in all sectors of society and there is a constant need for new ideas, innovation and development. Crucial for dealing with contemporary complex challenges on a local, regional, national and global scale is a need for the inclusion of many perspectives and competences. However, collaboration is never friction free but challenging. A reason for this might be that there are different expectations on goals and outcomes due to that collaborating organizations bring different contexts, Inter-organisational collaborations, cultures, traditions etc. These challenges are addressed by several approaches for university-society collaboration, e.g. Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), University-Industry-Government (Triple-helix), University Community Partnership (UCP), and Public Private Academic Partnership (PPAP). These are all aiming at planning, performing, compiling and leveraging knowledge exchange and co-creating sustainable results. What is less developed is what genuine impact such results do have on society, i.e. societal impacts. Thus, there is a need for gaining more knowledge in research about what key mechanisms that constitutes successful collaboration between academia and various public and private organizations in research projects.This conceptual paper explores the underlying concepts of principles that are used as guidelines for successful university-society collaboration. It draws on a literature review of key concepts selected from established frameworks and models that are current in the field of university-society collaboration, e.g. co-creation, trust, relationship building. The aim of the paper is to gain deeper insights in the complex dynamics of research collaboration by combining previous models with current research literature and suggest implications for both model development as well as principles of conduct when societal impact are to be ensured in university-society collaboration. Hence, the research questions to be addressed in this paper are: What are the key concepts that underlie the dynamics of university-society collaboration in the research literature? How can successful university-society collaboration be conceptualized in order to facilitate co-creation and societal impact?

    Abstract [en]

    Drama as a trans-structural catalyst in a global-local and formal -informal rhizome of ESD agents.

    In the center of the stage stands a collaborative theatre co –production facing sustainability with stakeholders from five continents. The project sets out to investigate a number of questions; How and if can Drama serve to enhance ESD learning with an emphasis on emerging processes in a trans-structural setting? What effect can an embodied learning that also includes a visit to the as- if –imaginary domains have on a intercultural ESD discussion? As Drama means doing - acting as well as reflecting there is a potential for a critical reflexivity, how can that be investigated? What are the ethical implications involved in the usage of such transformative tools? These are a few off all the questions that has triggered my interest in using Drama whilst working with ESD in an intercultural and network-based learning context. Findings from a pilot case study will be presented and I look forward to the possibility of enhancing the discussion within this distinguished crowd.

    Rapporten presenterar och diskuterar resultatet av en studie omkring en regionalt i Jönköpings län framtagen modell för rehabiliteringsutredning i primärvården – PR-team. Studien bygger på tre olika material och har genomförts som tre separata delstudier. Resultaten för delstudierna redovisas i rapporten var för sig.Den första delstudien bygger på material från ett register över samtliga patienter i primärvården i Jönköpings län som har en sjukskrivning som överstiger 28 dagar. Resultat från delstudien visar att en högre andel män genomgår PR-team vid privata vårdcentraler jämfört med kvinnor och att PR-teamutredningar vid offentliga vårdcentraler i en tredjedel av fallen genomfördes under de första 90 dagarna av sjukskrivningsperioden. Vidare noterades att psykisk ohälsa angavs oftare för kvinnor än för män samt att nästan dubbelt så många kvinnor som män avslutades mot arbete eller studier.Den andra delstudien bygger på observationer av genomförda möten i rehabiliteringsteamet där den sammanvägda bedömningen av rehabiliteringsutredningen diskuteras och dokument­eras. I delstudien ingår även intervjuer med mötesdeltagare i så kallade PR-teammöten. Resultatet visar att ett PR-teammöte utgörs av flera delar och att en relativt stor del av mötestiden handlar om hur dokumentationen ska ske och hur olika tolkningar ska göras för att kunna fylla i blanketten på ett korrekt sätt. Det märktes stor skillnad mellan teamen vilket sannolikt berodde på respektive teams vana att arbeta enligt modellen för PR-team samt möjligen en påverkan av att observeras och spelas in.Den tredje delstudien är en analys av dokumentationen från 177 rehabiliteringsutredningar. Analysen visar att dokumentationen utgör en textgenre som nästan helt saknar uttalade subjekt. Det gäller både patienten som texten handlar om och den/de personer som gör bedöm­ningen. I den tematiska analysen framstår smärtproblematik som den främsta anledningen till att en teamutredning genomförs. Tre fjärdedelar av utredningarna handlade om kvinnor. Lång sjukskrivningshistoria, låg utbildning och migrationshistoria framstod som särskilda sårbarhetsfaktorer där såväl att patientens framtidsbild som att teamets bedömning pekade mot ringa förutsättningar för återgång till arbete.

    Abstract [en]

    This article aims to map out and analyse how Sweden’s security economy is shaped and sustained through security policies, political decisions, and personal connections amongst commercial and state elites. We treat the arms and security service industries as two sides of the same coin. In doing so, we address a shortcoming in the security literature that often analyses these two fields as separate areas of study with their own set of logic, research questions, theories, and methodologies. By bringing these two areas together, our study contributes to knowledge of the relationship between commercial defence and security actors and the state and a deeper understanding of Sweden’s security economy.

    HANDFAST MÖTE PÅ LIKA VILLKOR – INTEGRATIONSPROJEKTET KONSTEN ATT DELTA1.1 SAMMANFATTNING Detta är en studie av integrationsprojektet Konsten att delta: Bild och Form genom-förd under hösten 2018 på uppdrag av Konstnärernas Riksorganisation.1 Texten ger en inblick i projektets praktik av kollegiala möten mellan konstnärskollegor med bakgrund från olika nationella och internationella kultur- och konstfält med målet att nå yrkesintegration inom det svenska konst- och kulturfältet. Syftet är att undersöka konstnärers möten och aktivitet inom ramen för projektet, ge per-spektiv på de roller som utvecklats, och vilken nivå av integration som projektet når. Som framgår i denna studie, är svårigheterna som kan möta en nyanländ konstnär att över huvud taget bli sedd och erkänd som yrkesverksam konstnär, och därefter att komma in i sammanhang och konstnärliga nätverk där dennes kompetens kan tillvaratas. Konsten att delta har utifrån denna verklighet utformat mentorsprogrammet och arbetat aktivt gentemot olika kulturinstitutioner och myndigheter som en lösning på dessa två problem. Vi kommer till slutsatsen att mentorprogrammet fungerar som yrkesintegration på individnivå och att Konsten att delta och deltagarnas arbete emot institutioner över en längre tid har lett till en förändring. Integration blir här synlig som en tvåvägsprocess: då utlandsfödda eller konstnärer som är utbildade eller tidigare har varit verksamma utomlands, påskyndar en förändring också av de kulturinstitutioner och personer som dessa kommer i kontakt med. För att nå fram till en punkt där det svenska kultur- och konstfält speglar, och är representativt för dagens mångfaldssverige krävs det en förändring bland svenska kultur- och myndighetsinstitutioner. Det finns goda in-dikationer på att Konsten att delta är en del i denna förvandling. Vi föreslår ett antal rekommendationer, dels gällande att vidareutveckla Konsten att delta och dels för fortsatta studier som kan stärka projektet och ge ytterligare förståelse för integrationsprojekts bestående verkan och värden.

    Syftet med studien var att validera en ny svensk ledarskapsmodell genom att studera möjliga samband mellan ledarintelligens och ledarnas uppfattning om vad de lägger ner sin arbetstid på.

    Teoretiskt ramverk och bakgrund. Studien utgår från en tankemodell vid namn Komfortgränsen® (Ronthy & Rosendahl, 1993). Modellen visar att det ska finnas en balans mellan VAD man ska GÖRA och HUR man ska VARA. Det senare är svårare att lära sig och det ligger utanför de flestas komfortzon. Erfarenheten visar att idag arbetar chefer utifrån VAD, lite HUR och sällan VARFÖR. Studiens ramverk är en teori om ledarintelligens (LQ) (Ronthy, 2006), som nyligen prövats empiriskt och även vidareutvecklats av oss. Den vidareutvecklade modellen består av fyra ledarintelligenser som kan mätas på ett reliabelt sätt med hjälp av ett självskattat frågeformulär; en emotionell (EQ), rationell (IQ), social (SoQ) och själens intelligens (SjQ).

    Summering av resultaten. Över 300 ledare i åldern 21 till 69 år skattade såväl sin LQ som procentuell uppdelning av sin arbetstid via inloggning på Internet. En tredjedel av deras arbetstid ägnas åt möten och en femtedel åt operativ verksamhet. Resterade arbetstid fördelas till planering (12%), egen utveckling (11%), coaching (11%), måluppföljning (8%) och reflektion (6%). Som väntat, fanns det ett positivt samband mellan IQ och planering, samt mellan EQ och coaching.  Oväntat, fanns det ett negativt samband mellan IQ och operativ verksamhet.

    Slutsatser: Resultaten från denna kvantitativa studie är i linje med studier genomförda med hjälp av kvalitativa metoder (t.ex. skuggning). Chefer ägnar mest av sin tid åt arbetsmöten.

    Praktiska och/eller teoretiska implikationer. Nya arbetssätt och nya organisationsstrukturer skulle behöva chefer med en balanserad ledarintelligens med större utrymme för EQ och SjQ. Moderna chefer skulle behöva ägna mer av sin arbetstid åt coaching av sina medarbetare, samt åt egen utveckling och reflektion, men även åt den operativa verksamheten för att inte komma ifrån verkligheten. Den beprövade erfarenheten visar att de flesta chefer lär sig ledarskap utifrån modeller sprungna från industrialismens tid. Fokus ligger mer på VAD man som chef ska GÖRA och mindre på HUR man ska VARA. LQ-modellen behöver utvecklas och valideras mot andra arbetspsykologiska variabler än arbetstid.

    Den här litteraturstudien erbjuder en inblick i vad tidigare forskning har undersökt i relation tillbarnkonventionen. Målgruppen för studien är barn 0-6 år i utbildnings-och omsorgsverksamhet.

    Fokus ligger på att identifiera möjligheter och hinder för ett positivt arbete för att främja barns rättigheter i enlighet med konventionen. När det gäller perspektiv i studien finns barndomssociologin och Deweys (1960) teori om utbildning för att diskutera resultat och tolkningar. I analysarbetet har en tematisk innehållsanalys använt för att utröna kategorier i relation till syfte och frågeställningar. Tre teman kunde identifieras, Myndigheters riktlinjer och kulturella normer, pedagogers förhållningssätt och barns delaktighet samt Barns lika värde.

    Nyckelfynd är pedagogers brist på kunskap och utbildning i relation till barnkonventionen,olika metoder som gynnar barns delaktighet samt myndigheters bristande ansvar för implementeringen av konventionen.

    A principal element in the process of integration is identity. The ability of immigrants to integrate the cultural identity of their country of origin and the cultural identity of their new country to form a coherent self-concept has been found to be positively related to various forms of psychological well-being. But there is a lack of consensus among researchers regarding the optimal integrated identity structure. While supporters of the acculturative approach argue that a strong identification to both the original and the new groups maximizes well-being,others insist more on the importance of maintaining a coherent identity, regardless of the strength of identification and regardless of the number of social identities.As most researchers in the health oriented debate on identity have focused on abicultural context, knowledge of the identity structure that promotes well-being in a multicultural surrounding is limited. The identity politics dominating mainstream multicultural discourses are theoretically grounded on the idea that humans have essential, unchanging cores that are fully formed and integrated. Within this paradigm, groups are identified by characteristics that are understood as inherently distinctive. Therefore in order to understand the process by which social identities become integrated into a concept of self an intercultural approach of the understanding of social identities and well-being is suggested. The aim of this chapter is to review the debate on the concept of coherence in relation to identity and well-being in a multicultural context and to investigate whether identity based coherence is challenged or promoted by an intercultural approach of understanding.

    There is a great interest in research, for individuals’ personalities, how the different personality traits affect events and what makes us humans act in different ways in different situations. When talking about personality, one often starts from The Big Five, which is a model that describes individuals´ personality based on five personality traits (Extraversion, Neuroticism, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Openness to experience). A relatively new concept has been added in recent years of research, Grit, which is a concept that describes an individual´s inner drive and perseverance to achieve long-term set goals. Grit (which has some similarities with The Big Five theory trait Conscientiousness) has in studies on, among others, students and in organizational research proved to have a strong connection with Growth Mindset. An individual with a Growth Mindset believes that intelligence can be developed through hard work and training. The research is solid when it comes to personality and achievements in for example, school-related situations. Our contribution to the research is to see if any connections between personality and Mindset exists, both the personality trait of the Big Five theory Conscientiousness and the newer concept of Grit in relation to Mindset. We also intend to investigate which of Grit and Conscientiousness is most strongly linked to the Mindset. In the study, we use a quantitative method through three validated instruments: IPIP30 Dweck Mindset and Learning potential of the workplace scale (LPW) forms are based on self-assessment in each area and have in previous studies shown good validity. The results of the study showed that the relationship between Mindset and Grit was the only one that showed continued significance when the variables were added to the regression analysis (r=,37 p >.001). This means that the correlation between Mindset and Grit exists.

    It is commonly understood across Europe that the provision of Social Services of General Interest (SSGI) is important. Several official documents guarantee every EU citizen access to, and the availability of, SSGI. Nevertheless, when it comes to producing, financing, administrating and territorially organising SSGI, the approaches and practices used across the various European states differ significantly while often mirroring the functioning of the social welfare and national administrative planning systems that prevail on the ground. The purpose of this paper is to present a systematic analysis of how European states (the EU 27 plus Croatia and the EFTA countries of Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) cope with the organisation of SSGI in the fields of education, care, labour market, social housing and insurance schemes. Outlining the similarities and differences of the various national approaches leads to the creation of a European typology of SSGI organisation. This typology will then be compared to existing typologies and classifications of social welfare and spatial planning systems.

    No single or common definition, or even a shared basic understanding, of Territorial Impact Assessment (TIA) currently exists. The conceptual background of TIA is focused on Territorial Cohesion (TC), which, in turn, also lacks a single definition. TC has a strong connection to Services of General Interest (SGI) as these services are a crucial element of the Cohesion Policy. This paper is a spin-off from the ESPON SeGI project and aims to discuss the applicability of TIA on SGI. The analysis is focused on an ex ante evaluation of TIA and on the methodology of critical evaluation. The findings suggest a rather limited applicability as an undefined concept (TIA) is based on another undefined concept (TC) to measure the impact on a third vaguely defined concept (SGI). Moreover, the particularities of each SGI may be related to economic and social changes that themselves may or may not be territorially reflected.

    Technical and performance related uncertainties that come with an increased number of components and system complexity are often thoroughly examined and tested in demonstration buildings. On the contrary, and despite the energy research literature stressing the importance to understand the requirements and context of the users, the uncertainties that occupants encounter while adapting to new energy efficient buildings are seldom examined and identified in depth.This paper will highlight the usefulness of seeing the technologies for buildings from the users' point of view. From a social practice perspective and the concept of domestication the paper examines various types of uncertainties encountered by occupants when managing technologies for buildings, such as bedrock heat pump, photovoltaic panels and LED-lighting, in a new energy efficient house.The result demonstrates that it is demanding and tiresome to tackle uncertainties and learn how to handle technologies for building, as well as to contact professionals for support. It might in fact be more convenient to "leave it as it is", with the consequences that no one is managing the technologies. Instead of assuming that carrying out this practice is straightforward, it would be better to work on an approach where this is not the case. In fact, the later approach creates much better conditions for extended learning and product development than the former.

    Many energy consuming household activities are collectively organized, while in information campaigns for energy conservation they are regarded as planned and performed by individuals in isolation. This article aims at scrutinizing this mismatch by analytically examining how energy-consuming activities are allocated and organized among household members and explore the implications for energy consumption. Time-geographic concepts ground for the investigation and empirical illustrations are taken from a uniquely rich historic Swedish pilot study on time-use from 1996. The pilot offers time-diaries from members of the same households which allow analysis on activity allocation in the households. We present a conceptual framework with two overarching principles of activity allocation; project division and project sharing. Visualizations of daily activity sequences from time-diaries in the pilot study are used to analyze the household project providing meals. The overall result indicates that the ways households allocate and coordinate energy consuming activities matter to energy use. Consequently, it is important to consider the household with its members for understanding daily energy consuming activities and people’s possibilities to conserve energy. If reconfigured to fit into the interlinked everyday life activity sequences of household members, energy advice and information campaigns might improve the opportunities to reach their targets.

    Abstract [en]

    Think tanks are a special type of civil society organization engaged in research and advocacy. They produce and deliver social analysis to policymakers and the wider public, aiming to influence policy in a given direction while declaring themselves detached from vested interests. This chapter focuses on how the image of independence rhymes with think tanks’ need for significant economic resources, revealing two main strategies to resolve the resulting funding dilemma. The first strategy entails diversification of funding sources; the second is avoiding certain types of funding outright. The concrete sources that individual think tanks eschew turn out to be linked to their ideological profiles: conservative institutions highlighted foreign funding as the most problematic, while market liberal and centrist liberal institutions shunned state funding.

    This article applies our earlier proposed theoretical framework on everyday resistance in the case of Palestinian Sumūd (steadfastness) in relation to the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories and the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. Our original framework rests on the dimensions of: (I) repertoires of everyday resistance; (II) relationships of agents; as well as the (III) spatialization and (IV) temporalization of everyday resistance. The already existing complex theoretical debates as well as the rich body of empirical work regarding the Israel/Palestine conflict give us an opportunity to illustrate and explore the possibilities as well as the limits of the proposed framework. Our hope is that in this way, we encourage more systematic research on and a more nuanced understanding of everyday resistance.

    Purpose – The purpose of this study is to contribute knowledge about learning linked to the film industry by investigating how film producers reason about learning for and in the profession. 

    Design/methodology/approach – This study is based on semi-structured interviews with twenty film producers, both university and workplace trained (UWT) and workplace trained (WT). The content analysis is based on the transcribed dialogues. The study is empirical, explorative and qualitative.

    Findings – The interviewees consider networks to be of utmost importance for gaining entrance to and continuously finding work in the film industry. They also reason about required knowing and what learning practices are available. Although formal education is not advocated by all, it can hold intrinsic value for the individual. Traditions of learning are being scrutinized and critical reflection is replacing naivety and emotionality.

    Practical implications – Different aims regarding learning in the formal education system and film industry result in a gap which needs to be bridged in order to challenge conserving and reproducing patterns of learning. Collaboration is suggested as a solution benefiting both the individual learner and the film industry. The resulting knowledge from this study can be used by the formal education system and the film industry when developing forms for collaboration surrounding learners of film production. 

    Originality/value – The focus presented in this paper of learning in and for film production has been sparingly addressed in previous research.

    We study the structure of the interregional inventor networks in Sweden by examining the residence of inventors and coinventors involved in Swedish patent applications to the European Patent Office. Several factors are found to influence the spatial affinity of regions. We find that spatial affinity extends beyond the region if it has less own R&D-related resources (business R&D, university R&D and patenting); if it is close to the other region and if it is relatively small. The resources of that other region plays a positive role if, in analogue fashion, that region has more R&D-related resources.

    The objective of this report is to review the relevant theoretical and empirical literature to provide a conceptual and methodological background for the analysis of the consequences of ICT use and globalisation on the regional economies in the European Union. We highlight the key aspects of ICT as a general purpose technology, discuss the economic impacts of ICT diffusion from macro and micro perspectives, and examine the spatial consequences of ICT diffusion. We focus on regional innovation systems and globalisation in order to propose an organizing framework for the analysis of the impact of ICT diffusion on regional development.
