    Readiness or resistance?: Newly arrived adult migrants' experiences, meaning making, and learning in Sweden2017Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis is about newly arrived adult migrants' meaning making and learning in Swedish society during the two years' introduction period, after they have received the residence permit. I have specifically studied Arabic speaking adults' meaning making and learning, by carrying out observations and individual in-depth interviews with 12 migrants. The introduction period consists mainly of three so called introduction measures; the civic orientation course, Swedish for immigrants (SFI), and different work related activities, such as internship at different work places.The results show that etablering is about shaping the newly arrived adult migrants into "good" citizens, through the introduction measures, among other things in the civic orientation course, which is regulated through the policy documents, and which so to say provides meaning to the newly arrived. The "good" citizen has some specific characteristics, which, roughly, are that he or she is independent (and advocates individuality), free, equality thinking, secularized, law-abiding (which includes being honest), responsible, and a "good" parent. These characteristics are expressed in different ways in the civic orientation course, for instance through the course material. The Swedish society is described as something desirable, and different from what is implied to be "Arabic" values and ways of thinking. The idea of the "good" citizen appears to aim at constructing the adult migrants' (and their families') identity, something which many of the study's respondents make a resistance to.As concerns the migrant's new experiences, it is, for example, those which the migrant get through the contact with the Swedish Public Employment Service (SPES) that affect the meaning making in the new society. The meaning which most of the respondents have made of the SPES's measures for them is that this authority only offers "prepackaged" solutions, and does not provide the help or support that they need. Also the experiences which the migrant has in the civic orientation course, and the meaning which "old" migrants give to him or her, play a role when he or she makes meaning of Sweden and Swedes, and of his or her new life situation. Further, it has been shown that it is those experiences that the adult individual has been socialized through, and those which he or she has gained through work or education in his or her country of origin, which affect his or her meaning making in Sweden. It is mostly values which concern child upbringing and religion that lead to a certain understanding and construction of one's new life. These values, when related to the values which are included in the "good" citizen idea, also lead to either a resistance or a readiness towards the meaning giving that is embedded in the "good" citizen notion.

    Abstract [en]

    Drawing on an extensive amount of work by other researchers, as well as some literary sources from the time, Goran Adamson discusses the widespread view that Nazism was anti-sex. Indeed, during Nazi rule homosexuality and street prostitution were persecuted, and Jews and “degenerates” were prevented from having sex (not merely by law, but by elimination). However, reported circumstances such as cheap access to condoms, a high number of pregnancies during party rallies, and quasi-religious cultivation of “the Germanic sexual instinct” would suggest that matters may have been much less restrictive for the majority of Germans. The idea of an overall Nazi anti-sex attitude may well have been constructed by intellectuals from the Freudian Left/Frankfurt School, especially their theories of an intimate connection between sexual repression and authoritarianism. Such views gained widespread popularity with the 68’ generation, and they were an essential reason why sexuality came to be considered the cure for all social evils. This overestimation of the significance of sexual liberation, and recent conservative reactions to it, constitute an important part of today’s political landscape.

    Abstract [en]

    The implementation of evidence-based methods in hospital settings is difficult and complex. The aim of the present study was to highlight the implementation process concerning a new working method, i.e. a new assessment tool, based on the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF), among psychiatric nursing staff on five participating wards at a Swedish county hospital. Descriptive, qualitative data were collected through focus group interviews pre- and post-implementation. Data were analysed using directed content analysis, guided by Normalization Process Theory (NPT). The results revealed that just one of the five participating wards met the criteria for a successful implementation process. The results confirm previous studies showing the difficulty of implementation. Although participants agreed with the intention of the model, they were reluctant to apply it in practice. The implementation process seemed to be influenced by factors such as: time pressure; heavy workload; stress; lack of routines in using the tool; lack of nursing staff; as well as cultural characteristics and resistance to change.

    Collaboration in emergency work is challenging on many levels. The unforeseen and temporary nature of incidents presents basic challenges. Another important challenge is boundaries between specialized and autonomous emergency service organizations. We need to know more about how exercises are performed to increase the individuals and organizations preparedness for future joint response work. The aim of this study was to explore how boundary work is carried out at the incident site during exercises, and how boundary awareness is developed based on this boundary work. The analytic focus was on how boundaries were identified, negotiated and managed in the participants work. Empirically, full-scale exercises involving police, ambulance and rescue services and with repetition of practical scenarios and joint-reflection seminars are studied. Much of the work in the exercises was performed within distinct areas of expertise, in accordance with concrete routines, skills and responsibilities. Boundary work was often organized in the form of distribution of labour or creating chains of actions. The exercises shed light on challenges related to other aspects of emergency response,such as a lack of resources, diverging primary responsibilities, time-criticality and hazardous environments. The design allowed participants to explicate boundaries, test and discuss alternative solutions, and to visualize the effects of different solutions as the scenarios were repeated. The boundaries that were identified were often of institutional character, and were also related to the specific scenarios and to the actions taken in the activities. By integrating real-life experiences of collaborative work in the exercise, the exercise gained a certain meaning that was essential for the participants to develop boundary awareness.

    Abstract [en]

    In relation to different modifications on contemporary games of ethnicity, present among young people in Swedish multiethnic environments, a similarity with the phenomenon of passing is suggested. Passing usually refers to a movement from one side to another (the foundational example being from black to white). You pass over or through something and you may pass into a position from which you later retire. Judith Butler has given theoretical attention to the phenomenon of passing by stressing its relation to the act of queering. The connection between passing and queering comes about as a challenge of borders between what is presumed to be different races in addition to a challenge of the heteronormative order of gender and sexuality.

    From an empirical material, consisting of interviews of young women in a multiethnic Swedish suburb, the phenomenon of passing will be discussed through examples on how young people can talk about the act of faking ethnicity. What ethnic positions are aspired as desirable may depend on intersecting categories as gender, sexuality and class identifications. In the reactions and comments on these kind of acts two counter positions seem to collide, one being based in the idea of authenticity and the other being a strive to oppose on absolutist definitions of ethnicity. If origin, roots and a firmly anchored cultural identity are seen as necessary or preferred values for the individuals’ or the ethnic groups’ self respect, passing must be interpreted as negative. But if certain acknowledgements become repressive rather than liberating passing may be a way of question and transgress normative ethnic and gendered status.

    The centre of Child and Youth Studies at University West works strategically with other regional research environments and institutions that study children, youths and young adults. The goal of our research centre is to spread knowledge about the social conditions under which children and young people live, thereby strengthening their position in society. Collaboration with external research environments is one of the ways that our research domain works to reach that goal. Partnerships are formed through a model that strives to create good conditions for both our research and that of our partners. This model is grounded in a dialogue between research partners who work together to select areas of interest and formulate hypotheses. These research projects are financed equally by the university and our partners. The following report is the result of one of  these research partnerships.Advanced industrial society has been replaced by a society based upon knowledge and information where industrial work/manufacturing becomes less common. Västervik is one of the small towns in Sweden whose main industries have closed down or severely decreased their workforce during the last few decades of great structural change. The groups in the job market that have been most affected by these changes are young men and women, something which is evident in the high unemployment rates among the young population. The purpose of this study was to investigate young people’s own experiences and thoughts regarding their own situation as jobseekers in the municipality of Västervik. How do they see themselves and the situation they find themselves in? The narratives were collected in the form of 18 in-depth interviews with young men and women between the ages of 19-25, all them registered at the job center in Västervik. In the report different aspects of their situation are discussed, such as: the young people’s relation to their hometown, their thoughts on the meaning and value of work, the role of education, the economic, social and emotional consequences of unemployment, and their experiences of taking part in various programs for unemployed. The narratives we have encountered can be seen as having some general validity in the sense that many of their experiences are probably shared by other unemployed young people in other locations in Sweden, but Västervik is also a specific town with a specific history and specific conditions.The young men and women have an ambivalent relationship to their hometown. On the one hand they want to start a life in the same location, but on the other, the future there is seen as very uncertain. Many of those interviewed would like to have the kind of industrial jobs that their parents have and grandparents experienced, but which are nowadays less and less common. The norm of a fulltime job is strong among the young men and women – something which strengthens the image of the evident dissonance between their seemingly traditional dreams and intentions and the structures of possibilities the municipality and community suggest for them. Connected to this are the ways the young people must relate to the postindustrial demands of employability – which means the ability to enterprise and market oneself on a competitive market. These demands presuppose abilities that are more likely to be socialized and practiced in certain social environments rather than in others, and the majority of the young men and women interviewed have a background in aworking class environment where these values and approaches are far from selfevident.The socioeconomic marginalization that these young people experienceresults in much curtailed possibilities for a period of youthful experimentation aswell as for an expected adulthood. Being unemployed means one has difficulty ingaining the status of an adult, but due to economic shortages, there are also limits to how much they can take part in this experimental lifestyle that characterizes youth. The young men and women’s situation can thereby be seen as a grey zone; they are neither young nor adults in the normative sense. In some of the narratives the young people express critical thoughts with regard to the social conditions that their difficult situation can be related to. By extension, expressing these thoughts and stating their opinion can be strengthening and mobilizing for them, both as individuals and as a group. Insights may be gained about unemployment as a shared experience rather than as a personal failure

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study was to try to identify what young women see as typically female and how this affects them as individuals, focusing on the female body. How free or limited do they consider themselves to respond to prevailing ideals of beauty, to men and other women. Our questions are how young women construct femininity through the body and why? We do this by using a holistic gender perspective and with the help of key theoretical concepts; gender, normative femininity, heteronormativity, performance, freedom/power and the female body,. We have had a qualitative approach and we have done interviews with six girls in secondary school age. The material is processed and analyzed on the basis of the IPA model, which aims to build themes from the interviews. The themes we have stressed in the study are: Female with large F, To find balance, I want to be unique... (but in the right way), Get a good boyfriend and learn to socialize with girls, To be something for everyone and desire after impossibility and the road ahead. By letting our informant´s voices be made visible in our analysis, we have been able to answer the question of how they experience their own construction of femininity. What becomes visible in the analysis is the great knowledge and awareness which are among the girls on this subject. This shows the complexity that exists around young women today. More conclusions that can be drawn is that whichever way the woman construct her femininity gives different degrees of social status. Lack of freedom is not about the limited possibilities for action it is rather the impact the effectiveness of the choices made and the awareness of those who provide the experience of not being free.

    Abstract [en]

    The growth of absenteeism has in recent years led to high costs for sick leave and early retirement in the public budgets. This study is based on quantitative data obtained through a designed questionnaire. The purpose of the study was to identify factors that correlate with the high short-term absence for sickness among temporary employees at a company. Previous studies have shown an association with short-term sick leave and leadership variables such as, perceived stress, motivation and tasks. The study's problem main question included these four disciplines. These were then analyzed in relation to age, sex and number of times the employee had been at home despite having been able to work. The study included temporary employees aged 18 to retirement-age. Of the 90 employees a total of 40 surveys were gathered. Mann-Whitney U and Kruskall-Wallis tests were used to calculate the differences between groups (age and sex). Spearman’s rank correlation was used to calculate the relationship between variables. Results of the study showed that women appeared to have stayed at home more frequently than men even though they would have been able to work. The study also revealed that there was a significant difference between the variable "to stay at home despite the fact that the individual was able to work

    Abstract [en]

    This paper draws on the experiences of work-integrated learning from a Swedish-Norwegian cross-sector research project where actors from university, industry, government and volunteer sector collaborate on city center development. The empirical setting of the present study consists of six smaller cities in rural municipalities with limited resources and experiences of collaboration with higher education institutions. The following research question is addressed: How can research and development projects serve as a vehicle for facilitating mutual knowledge exchange between academia and society in cross-sector and rural collaboration contexts? The aim is hence to suggest a tentative collaboration model that identify and integrate knowledge flows between actors involved in cross-sector collaborations in such setting. To gain deep insights in the complex dynamics of project collaboration we applied a mixed methods approach including surveys, structured, in-depth qualitative interviews, observations, workshops and student projects. The data collection was performed during 2016-2017. Findings indicate that trust, continuity, and relationship building are the basis vital for successful creation, development and maintenance of knowledge flows. Furthermore, there is a need to develop an integrative tool box with different methodological tools, work practices and strategies to plan, perform, compile to leverage the knowledge flows and coproduce sustainable results. Our tentative model aims to illustrate conceptualize lessons learned on work-integrated learning and collaboration with academia. We discuss how the model may support co-creative and mutual results over time.

    Abstract [en]

    Socio-economic development, in any society, includes many productive activities excluded in conventional economic analyses. This paper aims to critically uncover, explore and discuss how productive activities included in societal development are hidden by a monetary bias. By doing so, the paper strives to initiate a critical conceptual discussion related to what is generally indentified as weaknesses and relevant policies in regional development. The goal is to reach beyond convetional economic analyses to unlock and develop implications for conceptual models that can exted perceptions of societal development with its political, temporal and spatial meaning. The paper proceeds as follows: Firstly, through some illustrative empirical examples, uncover the meanings of ´economic´ activities from completely different contexts; Secondly, to explore the more general implications of a perspective/approach, inspired by Hägerstrand, which emphasizes political implications in time and space; Finally, to point out a conceptual discussion that enhances a broadened perspective for societal regional development that reaches beyond the conventional meanings of economic development.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose. The aim of the study was to examine the role of job-related positive and negative emotions between acute fatigue at work and engagement. We tested two components of engagement: vigor (energetic aspect) and dedication (motivational aspect). We hypothesized that negative emotions mediate in energy depletion process and positive emotions mediate in broadening of energetic and motivational resources.

    Design/Methodology. Fatigue was measured by an index in accordance with the Japan Society for Occupational Health. The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale – short version (UWES) was used to evaluate vigor and dedication (Schaufeli, Bakker, & Salanova, 2006). Job-related affective well-being (JAWS) was used to assess positive and negative emotions (Van Katwyk et al., 2000). The study group consisted of 174 police officers (the average tenure of 10 years, range 1–23).

    Results. Baron and Kenny approach and the Sobel test supported our hypotheses. Fatigue was more negative related to vigor than dedication. We observed that positive and negative emotions fully mediated between fatigue and vigor (large effect size f2 = .36). Additionally, positive emotions fully mediated between fatigue and dedication (medium effect size f2 = .16). We confirmed these results by the Sobel test.

    Limitations. The correlational design was applied.

    Research/Practical Implications. Our results indicate that in police officers positive emotions may lead to broadening of energetic and motivational resources.

    Aim: The education system in Sweden has not yet formed a sustainable way into higher education and lifelong learning for students with intellectual disabilities. Discussions on inclusive education nationally in society are ongoing but few concrete examples have yet been implemented. This presentation will present experiences from the first attempt to organize and provide courses for students with intellectual disabilities within higher music education in Sweden. Methods: Two courses were given at the Academy of Music in Malmö, Lund University in 2010 and 2011. The content of the first course focused on the history of music, rhythm and ensemble playing. The second one focused on Opera as an art form with both process and product as means of learning. Results & Conclusions: The experiences show the students' capability to develop and enhance musical expression. However, questions concerning (a) the quality of music education currently available to students with ID, (b) pedagogical approaches in the academy, (c) rules for admission to higher education and (d) different attitudes to widening participation within the academies has emerged and need to be processed.

    Re-imagining Work and Masculinity in a Postindustrial Society2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper discusses the narratives of young working-class men, living in a small town in Sweden that is located outside the regions with economic growth. As in many other European countries, the rate of unemployment among Swedish youth is disproportionally high. Based upon material consisting of in-depth interviews with unemployed young men, the paper will analyze the changed meaning of masculinity in relation to work in a postindustrial society. Since working-class masculinity has traditionally been closely connected to wage labor and to the ability to provide for oneself as well as being the breadwinner of the family, the lack of resources that unemployment implies, means that masculinity and its relational implications must be re-imagined. The young men's narratives can thereby be seen to reflect social and cultural changes that have taken place on a structural level related to the labor market, the educational system, as well as the changed conditions for the formation of social identities. The intergenerational working-class culture on the one hand and neoliberal ideas permeating activities for the unemployed, such as training- and coaching-programs, on the other – serve as reference points for the young men's experience of subordination. In many ways the situation described was marked by deficiency and vulnerability, an effect of the social division of today, where the long-term unemployed are depicted as 'abject others' and even more so if placed in subordinated categories such as (non)working-class males, living in the back country. But what also can be traced in the young men's own narratives are some critical reflections and possible alternative ways of forming social identities and masculinities. This is furthermore related to different kinds of work ethics than the familiar one they have been socialized into when growing up and the other one that they have met as jobseekers.

    Abstract [en]

    With real world research as the theoretical framework, a study was conducted as an assignment by the HR-function at Parker Hannifin AB in Sweden. Bearing in mind that there have been ambiguities concerning the roles of managers and HR-staff in previous research and that the managers’ perceptions about the HR-function affects the role of the HR, this study was conducted. This study about perceptions and satisfaction concerning the working of an HR-function aimed to highlight possible differences in customer satisfaction amongst managers based on which unit they belonged to, level of managerial position, the time they have worked as managers in the organization, and the frequency of contact with the HR-department. Moreover, the study considered whether the opinions concerning areas of improvement have changed since the last conducted research. This research was conducted through an analysis of documents and a self-produced questionnaire which was sent to all managers within Parker in Sweden. The results indicated that the same areas of improvement-needs remains, that existing documents are inconsequent in relation to each other, and that several significant differences between managers’ perceptions emerged. The HR-departments along with the different documents should tentatively become more consistent so that their roles become clearer.

    Sammantaget ger ekonomicheferna uttryck för att de har ett tämligen gottinflytande över frågor som handlar om regelverk, normer, organisationsstrukturoch graden av delegation. Med tanke på att den totala svarsfrekvensenuppgår till 77 procent kan vi uttala oss tämligen väl om de undersökta tjänstemännensuppfattningar. Detta reser en rad intressanta frågor. Vilken gradav frihet och delegering är lämplig i en kommun? Hur ska man balanserakontroll, insyn och transparens mot ökade administrativa kostnader? Hurska man väga demokrati mot effektivitet? Frågan om graden av delegering handlar om en löpande avvägning mellanflexibilitet och kontroll. Frågan är vad som ska prioriteras mest i vilket lägeoch vilka delar som ska prioriteras på bekostnad av annat? Var betoningeni dessa frågor ska ligga är föremål för en ständig pendelrörelse över tid. Ibland betonas flexibilitet och i andra lägen kontroll. Detta hänger nära ihopmed kommunens regler, rutiner och ansvarstagande.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The overall purpose of the article was to study how doctors practise leadership in multidisciplinary teams. The article seeks to answer the question: Which approach do doctors use to lead multidisciplinary psychiatric teams?

    Methodology: Six psychiatric teams were studied at a university hospital. Each team was followed for eighteen months. Data were collected during a period of four years (2008–2011). Data were collected through interviews with doctors (n = 19) and observations (n = 30) of doctors’ work in a multidisciplinary psychiatric team.

    Findings: Doctors in a multidisciplinary team use either self-imposed or involuntary leadership. Oscillating between these two extremes is called reversible leadership.

    Research limitations: The study was performed at a psychiatric ward during treatment conferences in a university hospital. This limitation means that there is cause for some caution in interpreting the results.

    Practical implications: The results are useful for understanding leadership in multidisciplinary teams within the health and medical care system. The reversible leadership means that doctors can more easily oscillate from difficult situations and deal with internal tensions, facilitating leadership and management of the multidisciplinary team in the intended direction.

    Originality / value: Doctors in multidisciplinary psychiatric teams use reversible leadership.

    Abstract [en]

    This study is about leadership and decision-making in psychiatric teams. To manage healthcare, cross-organisational work has been used as a working method in teamwork.

    The overall aim of the study was to study how leadership and decision-making are applied in psychiatric teams. The issues addressed are: to describe and to understand how leadership in psychiatric teams is applied, to describe and to understand how decision-making in psychiatric teams is applied, explain why there are potential differences between talk and practice, and to explain why teamwork is applied in psychiatry.

    The study's theoretical framework is based on the challenges that arise when teamwork is organised in a multi-professional context. In the study, decision theory, leadership theory and new institutional theory are used to help to link together and provide explanations for behaviour patterns of professions.

    The study's data were collected between 2008–2011 through interviews, observations and document studies. Total study consists of 101 interviews with 111 informants. Observations have been done of 10 teams on 132 occasions for a total of 230 hours. Observations have focused on the teamwork carried out in the treatment conferences.

    The study shows that: 1) there is an informal contract in teams that governs who does what in different situations, 2) doctors applied a reversible leadership where they alternated between the involuntary and the self-imposed, 3) teams used decision norms that are governed by situation-specific micro-codes, 4) there is an episodic culture which decreased the incentive to provide preventive and long-term treatment, 5) teamwork was used to provide the opportunity for solidarity, classification and control, and 6) there was no striving for perfection in decision-making; instead, the teams were satisfied with an acceptable level that everyone could agree on.

    Abstract Rationale, aims and objectives  In this article, ideal conceptions about teamwork are tested. The research question posed is: How are teams in psychiatry formed? Three theoretical concepts that distinguish groups from teams are presented: sequentiality, parallelism and synchronicity. The presumption is that groups cooperate sequentially and teams synchronously, while the parallel work mode is a transitional form between group and team. Methods  Three psychiatric outpatient teams at a university hospital specialist clinic were studied. Data were collected through 25 personal interviews and 82 hours of observations. The data collection was carried out over 18 months (2008–2009). Results  Results show: (1) that the three theoretical distinctions between group and team need to be supplemented with two intermediate forms, semiparallel and semisynchronous teamwork; and (2) that teamwork is not characterized by striving towards a synchronous ideal but instead is marked by an adaptive interaction between sequential, parallel and synchronous working modes. Conclusions  The article points to a new intermediate stage between group and team. This intermediate stage is called semiparallel teamwork. The study shows that practical teamwork is not characterized by a synchronous ideal, but rather is about how to adaptively find acceptable solutions to a series of practical problems. The study emphasizes the importance of the team varying between different working modes, so-called semisystematics.

    In this article, we studied collaboration exercises (3LC) between the rescue services, ambulance services, and police force, which were developed to enhance learning and usefulness. The exercises’ structure was based on identified deficiencies in previous collaboration exercises. The purpose was to test the exercise model in terms of learning and usefulness. Ten 3LC exercises were observed. A total of 65 semi-structured interviews were conducted (2011–2014) in connection with the exercises. The exercises contained across-boundary elements, seminars, and interactive documentation. The participants were given the opportunity to discuss, analyze, and critically reflect on their efforts. During the seminars, the individual actions were analyzed, which led to alternative strategies that were subsequently tested in a repeated exercise. Our results demonstrate that repetitive features and seminars during collaboration exercises promote learning toward an organic behavior and usefulness in the actual incident work.

    This study relates to collaboration exercises, with particular focus on the full-scale exercises between the police, rescue services and ambulance. To succeed in a complex situation, it requires that the personnel’s ability to collaborate across organisations be developed and refined.

    The overall aim of this study was to examine how collaboration is practised and how exercises lead to learning and usefulness. A research summary was initially done in this study. Based on that, a number of key concepts were developed that proved helpful when we followed the Swedish collaboration exercises through interviews and observations. The collected analysis has since been the basis for the design of a new exercise model, 3LC, three-level collaboration. It is based on the experiences we have had in studies of traditional exercises.

    The 3LC exercises that were conducted consisted of two practical sessions and three seminars. Each session was followed by an evaluative seminar with the aim that participants themselves would reflect and develop their patterns of behaviour. The two practical sessions were identical. It gave the participants the opportunity to rehearse and methodically try new approaches. The first exercise session was carried out according to the procedures that normally apply and govern the actions at an actual event. The second exercise session was preceded by a self-critical seminar where participants themselves identified what could be improved for the next exercise session.

    The research project was carried out from 2011 to 2014. A total of 19 collaboration exercises were studied, including 16 full-scale exercises. A total of 97 interviews and 125 hours of observation were carried out in this study. A questionnaire (CLU instrument) was developed, which was answered by 272 exercise participants.

    The study shows that collaborative sessions in the exercises contributed to the participants learning more and having greater usefulness from the exercises. 3LC exercises were perceived to enhance learning by 26 per cent and usefulness by 17 per cent, compared with traditional exercises. Collaborative exercises are benefitted when participants analyse their weaknesses themselves. Repetitive elements where participants try out alternative strategies improve preparedness prior to actual events.

    The aim of the study was to examine the emergency personnel’s perception of the effects of exercises, with regard to learning and usefulness. The exercises were quasi-experimental and constructed in such a way that employees from different organizations overlapped each other’s tasks. This was accomplished by: having asymmetries included in the scenarios, repeating exercise procedures and testing different strategies, which were discussed at joint seminars. The exercises were compared to a similar study, published in this journal, of nonquasi-experimental but merely traditional exercises. Surveys were distributed and collected from emergency personnel in connection with seven exercises. At the exercises, 94.3% of the personnel thought that the exercises had a focus on collaboration (traditional exercises, 75.6%).

    Purpose - There is a tendency in team research to employ concepts of stepwise models, reachingfrom the primitive to the excellent, to suggest that a higher level of evolution is better than the basic and simple. This tendency includes typologies of teams. This article aims to question the relevance of this view.

    Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected in three steps. In the first step, articles and books analyzing teams and teamwork from stepwise analytical models were collected. In the second step the collected data were classified into different themes. Each stepwise model was classified into one essential denomination. This classification resulted in eight themes. In the third step each theme was analyzed, which led to the fusion of some of the themes.

    Findings - The conclusion is that a synchronous, complementary or mature team is not necessarily optimal. Contrary to this, a differentiated, sequential or multi team approach can be optimal for some purposes. Team research needs to establish a more open, inductive and critical attitude than at present.

    Originality/value - The paper highlights the need to observe and use team theories in a balanced and critical way.

    This article aims to study whether exercises contribute to learning that can be useful in actual emergency work. It reports the findings of a study about professional emergency personnel’s perceptions of the impact of collaboration exercises. Surveys were distributed and collected from emergency personnel in conjunction with three collaboration exercises that took place in Sweden in spring 2012. The survey included personnel holding different positions within the police department, fire department and ambulance services. Among them were also operational personnel such as officers. A total of 94 professional emergency personnel agreed to participate by answering the survey. The response rate was 95%.The study shows that collaborative elements in exercises contribute to perceived learning (R2 = 0:53), and that learning, in turn, has a perceived beneficial effect on actual emergency work (R2 = 0:26).The perceived results of collaboration,learning and their impact on actual emergency work, however, are moderate.The exercises were characterised by long waiting times and gave few opportunities to practise different strategies. Only a few respondents felt that they learned something about the collaborating organisations’ ways of communicating and prioritising. Many also thought that the exercises were more useful for command officers than for operational personnel.Thus, the study shows that by strengthening the collaborative elements of the exercises, the perception of the participants’ actual emergency work can be developed.

    Inom ramen för Tillväxtanalys regeringsuppdrag att beskriva utvecklingen i och inom olika regioner har myndigheten valt att göra en översiktlig studie av pågående forskning kring landsbygders utveckling. Arbetet har genomförts av agronom Leif Berndtsson, Högskolan Väst.

    Studien har i huvudsak genomförts genom litteratursökning. Därtill kommer enkät- och intervjusvar från ett antal forskare samt aktörer inom landsbygdsområdet.

    I särskild bilaga redovisas 40 forskningsprojekt samt hänvisas till ca 100 papers från konferensen Nordic Rural Future, maj 2010.

    Rapporten utmynnar i ett antal slutsatser och förslag på förbättringar. Några av dem är följande:

    Forskningsfältet är mycket brett och svårdefinierat. Ordet landsbygd "avskärmar" en hel del forskning som faktiskt pågår, men där forskarna själva inte ser sig som "landsbygdsforskare" utan mer som ämnesinriktade inom exempelvis genus, jämställdhet, innovation, entreprenörskap el liknande. Det begränsar sökmöjligheterna av pågående forskning.

    Det vore önskvärt med ett tydligare landsbygdsfokus inom pågående forskning med inriktning mot klimatförändring och energiomställning. Det saknas t.ex. studier och forskning om vilka effekter och möjligheter en klimatomställning som det kan få för landsbygder och de människor som bor där.

    Den nyligen avslutade halvtidsutvärderingen av Landsbygdsprogrammet visar på att det finns behov av ytterligare forskning om hur man kan avläsa och mäta effekter av tillväxtstimulerande insatser. Utvärderarna har t.ex. haft uppenbara problem med att finna metoder för att avläsa effekter såväl inom de mer kvantitativa insatserna inom axel 1 och 2, som i de mer kvalitativa insatserna inom axel 3 och 4.

    Det vore vidare positivt med ett tydligare arbete för att föra ut forskningen till mer tillämpade insatser. I dagsläget satsas resurser på att återföra forskningsresultat till befintliga företag eller till nystartande företag via olika arenor som Inkubator, Innovationsbron, mm. Det finns ett behov av insatser för att föra ut mer samhällsinriktad forskning till praktisk tillämpning hos politiker, beslutsfattare, samhällsplanerare, regionutvecklare, m.fl.

    Flera forskare pekar på en obalans i tilldelningen av forskningsmedel inom landsbygdsområdet.

    Det är en förhoppning att översikten ger underlag för diskussioner och förslag som leder till en ökad förståelse för forskningen om landsbygders utveckling. I kapitlet slutsatser och rekommendationer finns många exempel på ett ökat tvärdisciplinärt synsätt för att stärka forskningsområdet. Detta skall inte tolkas som ett minskat behov av djup ämnesinriktad forskning. Snarare skall det ses som ett behov av att få de olika disciplinerna att öka sina kontaktytor med varandra. Det bör även i sin tur leda till en ökad förståelse och leda till fler insikter om de möjligheter som kan finnas inom landsbygdens områden. En förhoppning är att även forskningsfinansiärer kan se behov av att koppla ihop de vetenskapliga disciplinerna i större utsträckning.

    Slutligen ger de exempel som redovisas i rapportens bilaga en positiv bild av att det finns en pågående forskning, som om resultaten sprids, kan vara till nytta för landsbygdsområdet.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract: Two case studies of the implementation of contact centers (CCs) in Swedish municipalities were compared and analyzed. The purpose of the article is to focus on lessons learned from the perspectives of the management and the employees in the organizations according to the MOA-model. The research method used was semi-structured qualitative interviews with different personnel categories in both municipalities. According to our findings the implementation strategies varied among the two cases. The strategies affected the pace of implementation, attitudes and motivation aspects and understanding of the implementation. The potential of using registered information as a source for planning and decision-making was not fully utilized in the municipal organizations, although some statistics were produced. In both cases there was a combination of formal and informal learning strategies and flexible co-operation among the employees in the CCs which contributed to continuous learning processes and a good, co-operative working climate. Some learning challenges for the handling officers at the back offices were to adapt to a more process-oriented organization. Initially, many handling officers at the back-office were afraid of losing their jobs and work tasks to CC, contributing to negative attitudes towards CC, and hampering the learning process in taking part in the implementation process. The establishment of a CC is a comprehensive organizational change process affecting the whole municipal administration. A challenge for the municipalities is to formulate relevant strategies and manage the implementation in order to involve all employees.

    Abstract [en]

    Collaboration and learning are vital for development in all sectors of society and there is a constant need for new ideas, innovation and development. Crucial for dealing with contemporary complex challenges on a local, regional, national and global scale is a need for the inclusion of many perspectives and competences. However, collaboration is never friction free but challenging. A reason for this might be that there are different expectations on goals and outcomes due to that collaborating organizations bring different contexts, Inter-organisational collaborations, cultures, traditions etc. These challenges are addressed by several approaches for university-society collaboration, e.g. Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), University-Industry-Government (Triple-helix), University Community Partnership (UCP), and Public Private Academic Partnership (PPAP). These are all aiming at planning, performing, compiling and leveraging knowledge exchange and co-creating sustainable results. What is less developed is what genuine impact such results do have on society, i.e. societal impacts. Thus, there is a need for gaining more knowledge in research about what key mechanisms that constitutes successful collaboration between academia and various public and private organizations in research projects.This conceptual paper explores the underlying concepts of principles that are used as guidelines for successful university-society collaboration. It draws on a literature review of key concepts selected from established frameworks and models that are current in the field of university-society collaboration, e.g. co-creation, trust, relationship building. The aim of the paper is to gain deeper insights in the complex dynamics of research collaboration by combining previous models with current research literature and suggest implications for both model development as well as principles of conduct when societal impact are to be ensured in university-society collaboration. Hence, the research questions to be addressed in this paper are: What are the key concepts that underlie the dynamics of university-society collaboration in the research literature? How can successful university-society collaboration be conceptualized in order to facilitate co-creation and societal impact?

    Vårt syfte med uppsatsen var att ta reda på om KASAM-begreppet, trots att det har några år på nacken, fortfarande ses som betydelsefullt. Vi utgick från personalens perspektiv gällande KASAM's betydelse för barn 0-12 år, placerade på institution eller med någon form av insats från öppenvården. Genom kvalitativa intervjuer tog vi del av personalens erfarenheter av KASAM's betydelse för barnen, hur de arbetar och om de metoder de använder sig av , ger möjlighet att skapa en känsla av sammanhang för barnen. Vid tolkningen av vårt intervjumaterial utgick vi från tre teman baserade på våra frågeställningar. Det som framkom av materialet var att KASAM har stor betydelse för barnens välbefinnande. KASAM-begreppet är högst närvarande i de metoder som används inom verksamheterna, även om personalen inte talar om det i termer av KASAM.

    The safety of an organization is based not only on safe equipment and quality assurance processes, but also on the interaction between people (Törner, 2008). A good safety climate has a positive impact on safety and has been shown to reduce accidents. The aim of the present study was to find out if there are differences in safety climate between employees and management in an industrial enterprise with a quantitative approach. The study includes a survey with 31 participants in manufacturing industries in western Sweden between the ages of 22-65 of whom 3 were women and 28 were men. To reach out to the participants a web survey based on NOSACQ-50 (Nordic Safety Climate Questionnaire) was used, which measures seven dimensions of safe climate. The results showed that safety climate was at a good level for both management and employees. However, the two groups did not differ in how they perceived safety. The result also showed that there were correlations between the dimensions of NOSACQ-50. Although no significant differences between management and employees were discovered, the study highlights the importance of studying safety climate from several perspectives. There may be benefits in considering safety climate from a group perspective as this may generate a deeper understanding of safety climate as a whole, and how organizations can achieve a more coherent safety climate

    The study was aimed to investigate the relationship between the personality traits included in the Five Factor Model and the degree to which individuals experience job satisfaction. The study also investigated if it was possible to see a relationship between job satisfaction and individuals’ age. Job satisfaction was measured by the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, MSQ, which explores an individual's experience of intrinsic, extrinsic and general job satisfaction. Individuals' level of personality dimensions were studied using a Swedish shortened version of the Five- Factor Model. The material that forms the basis for the study's results come from 52 completed questionnaires carried out at two different workplaces. A clear result was that higher Extraversion was associated with higher degree of job satisfaction. Whether age was related job satisfaction, the present study showed a negative medium strong connection to the external job satisfaction. Since each individual, based on FFM, has a unique combination of the five personality traits, the study cannot generalize how individuals in general perceives job satisfaction. The study has only been able to reinforce the results of what previous studies have concluded; that there are correlations between the five personality traits and job satisfaction

    Drama as a trans-structural catalyst in a global-local and formal -informal rhizome of ESD agents.

    In the center of the stage stands a collaborative theatre co –production facing sustainability with stakeholders from five continents. The project sets out to investigate a number of questions; How and if can Drama serve to enhance ESD learning with an emphasis on emerging processes in a trans-structural setting? What effect can an embodied learning that also includes a visit to the as- if –imaginary domains have on a intercultural ESD discussion? As Drama means doing - acting as well as reflecting there is a potential for a critical reflexivity, how can that be investigated? What are the ethical implications involved in the usage of such transformative tools? These are a few off all the questions that has triggered my interest in using Drama whilst working with ESD in an intercultural and network-based learning context. Findings from a pilot case study will be presented and I look forward to the possibility of enhancing the discussion within this distinguished crowd.

    This paper will firstly sketch the key features of intercultural drama and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD); secondly critically reflect on current Higher Education Institution (HEI) discourse; the broad discrepancy between preferred visions for global learning for sustainable development and the rationale of self-realisation and commodification that seems to be the prevailing paradigm of European HEIs. Then the Interculturality and Sustainability network and the Gogol project which emerged from it in 2011 are introduced. The Gogol project, as an intercultural drama project, sets out to tackle issues of economic (un)sustainability. The concept of the project is presented and questions that have emerged in the planning of the project are shared.

In this workshop we will walk our talk, we will indeed all be both actors and audience. Our first entry will be sharing an intercultural project facing corruption/ economical unsustainability, initiated in Budondo, the Gogol Interplayground project, has now spread to all the continents.

    Syftet med denna undersökning är att fördjupa kunskapen om hur flickor bemöts i samspel med läraren. Bakgrunden till att vi valde att undersöka just detta är att det är ett intressant och aktuellt ämne i samhället idag med tanke på hendebatten som pågår. Vi är intresserade av att se hur det ser ut i en förskoleklass. Hur ska flickor vara enligt läraren, hur går det att se i förhållningssättet, accepteras flickorna som de är eller tillrättavisas de, eftersom de inte uppfyller de förväntningar som finns. Vi har valt att undersöka lärarens förhållningssätt gentemot flickorna, eftersom vi anser att det inte finns så mycket forskning om flickor i detta sammanhang och vi vill bidra till detta. Vi har lagt vårt fokus på att undersöka hur läraren förhåller sig till flickorna. Finns det underliggande normer i lärarens förhållningssätt, vilka förväntningar har läraren på flickorna, vad bryter mot normerna för hur flickor bör bete sig enligt läraren är exempel på frågor, som vi har fokuserat på. Vi har genomfört fyra videoobservationer i samlingstillfällen i en förskoleklass. Vi har valt att titta på lärarens förhållningssätt gentemot flickorna ur två olika synvinklar när vi analyserar videoobservationerna. De två analyssätt vi använt är dels teorin att människor föds till att vara flickor eller pojkar och att det finns en biologisk aspekt i könet. Detta kallas utvecklingspsykologi. Det andra analyssättet vi använt oss av innebär att barnen konstrueras till att vara flickor eller pojkar, vilket benämns socialkonstruktionism. Vi intresserar oss för att se hur lärarens samspel med flickorna kan se ut om vi analyserar det ur dessa synvinklar. Resultatet av vår studie visar att det finns vissa normer för hur flickor bör bete sig. De olika analyssätten vi använt för att titta på våra videoobservationer, "vi görs till flickor" och "vi föds till flickor" visar båda att det finns en tanke om att flickorna ska vara lugna, vänta på sin tur och inte prata rakt ut eller avbryta läraren. Det finns även i dessa olika synsätt att se på världen en tanke att flickor och pojkar är olika. Vi har enbart valt att analysera flickorna men det finns också en aspekt som inte går att bortse ifrån angående pojkarna, eftersom det förekommer pojkar i samlingen också. När vi analyserar genom synsättet att kön är konstruerat synliggörs, att läraren för in flickorna på den bana hen anser som det rätta sättet att vara som flicka. När är vi undersökte samma observationer på det sätt att det är en biologisk aspekt att flickorna föds till flickor så synliggörs lärarens förhållningssätt att det finns ett rätt och fel sätt för flickor att bete sig. Flickorna ska i detta synsätt vara som de blir födda till att vara. Om en flicka, som det händer i en av observationerna, avbryter läraren rättar denne till detta och menar, att det inte är rätt sätt för en flicka att bete sig. De olika synsätten "vi görs till flickor" och "vi föds till flickor" visar båda ett resultat som tyder på att normerna för hur flickor ska bete sig är starkt förankrade i hur samhället ser ut och hur det har sett ut genom historien. Flickorna ska inte bryta mot det feminina och om de försöker sig på att komma in på det maskulina tillrättavisas de.

    Syftet med studien är att undersöka om det finns skillnader mellan kvinnor och män i biståndsutredningar samt att analysera och reflektera över de önskemål och behov som uttrycks. Frågeställningarna handlar om hur jämställdhet kommer till uttryck inom äldreomsorgen i Lidköpings kommun och om eventuella skillnader mellan kvinnor och män kan utläsas i biståndsutredningar. Avsikten är att undersöka jämställdheten inom äldreomsorgen ur ett brukarperspektiv. För att finna svar på studiens frågeställningar har en dokumentanalys gjorts av 60 biståndsutredningar. Dokumenten har stegvis granskats och flera intressanta mönster har framträtt. Studiens resultat visar att kvinnor och män får den hjälp de ansöker om och att det inte finns några egentliga skillnader i vilka insatser de ansöker om. Detta resultat visar att kvinnor och män biståndsbedöms jämställt då det är behov som styr bedömningen och inte kön. Då studien också syftar till att reflektera över specifika önskemål har detta gjorts och det har visat sig att önskemål sällan uttrycks i biståndsutredningarna. Vår uppfattning om detta är att önskemål förmodligen uttrycks, men att de inte dokumenteras. Då materialet granskats för att finna eventuella skillnader mellan kvinnor och män har flera intressanta upptäckter gjorts som visar att kvinnor och män beskrivs på olika sätt i utredningarna. Vår tolkning av detta är att kvinnor beskrivs som hemorienterade och männen som omvärldsorienterade.
