Adoption of ERP system for operations management in SMEs2016Inngår i: Proceedings of IRIS39, Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia, Ljungskile, August 7-10, 2016 / [ed] Pareto, Lena, Svensson, Lars, Lundin, Johan, Lundh Snis, Ulrika Lundh Snis, 2016, s. 1-10Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The fast development of the IT in the society of today has led to that more SMEs rely on ERP systems. Especially, IT has facilitated the management of the flow of goods within and between organizations and have made lead times more effective and also have increased the overview of the flow of goods. This will help SMEs obtain a competitive advantage. The aim of this paper is analyze the factors influencing SMEs adoption of ERP systems. A qualitative case study is conducted within a company which both is engaged in manufacturing and project work. The company runs service projects for its customers and at the same time they produce articles both for sale and for use within the service projects. An ERP system can also serve as an overall system for the administration, the production and inventory management in the company. However, there are important factors to take into account in the adoption phase, related to the technological infrastructure, the organizational challenges as well as environmental relations in order to decide on an implementation on an ERP system. It is of a critical importance that the SME really change their routines in order to follow the processes implemented in the ERP system. Otherwise, the company runs the risk to be stuck in its previous and ineffective inventory management processes, regardless of investments in the ERP system and the technological infrastructure.

Frail Older Persons' Experiences of Information and Participation in Hospital Care2019Inngår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, ISSN 1661-7827, E-ISSN 1660-4601, Vol. 16, nr 16, artikkel-id E2829Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to describe frail older persons' experiences of hospital care of information and participation when being an inpatient at a hospital. A qualitative method was used. Data were collected at the hospital from 20 interviews with frail older patients, together with observations in the environment at the hospital ward. A content analysis was performed. Patients experienced not receiving information about their care and rehabilitation, or receiving such information in noisy surroundings. They experienced situations of misunderstanding related to their medication, which indicates the need for appropriate discharge calls for frail older patients. They expressed feelings of distress concerning the future, caused by hasty admissions or relatives' problems to handle the situation. The results highlight the need to receive appropriate information and to participate in decision-making. The level of health literacy should be taken notice of when giving information, using peaceful and quiet environments when informing frail older persons. Person-centered care should be recognized to a greater extent in order for healthcare professionals to give information to frail older people in a health literacy-friendly way. This might make it easier for frail older persons to participate in a partnership in care.

    Coping Skills of Students in Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication2013Inngår i: ICERI2013 Proceedings, 2013, s. 1210-1216Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Interactive and communicative situations within social environments are prerequisites for learning in collaboration. Synchronous computer-mediated communication is often used as a means to achieve active learning in collaboration. Synchronous communication thus offers the opportunity to actively engage students in collaborative learning activities. This paper is based on an ethnographic case study of synchronous communication between students in the lower secondary school collaborating in a cross-border project involving Danish, Norwegian and Swedish students. The project is aimed to promote the students in their Scandinavian intercomprehension skills using their own native languages when the students are collaborating in different joint projects. The aim of the paper is to analyze the characteristics of the coping skills of the students within a collaborating learning project using synchronous computer-mediated communication. One of the students in each group in each of the collaborating countries acted as a group leader, decided in advance. The students were also prepared in advance of what to synchronously discuss with their collaborating Scandinavian student groups. However, a critical part of the synchronous collaboration was the assignment for the group collaboration leader. It has been obvious that the student assigned for the role really is coping with this situation. The group collaborating leader has to take initiative, relate the discussion to the actual subject, distribute the word between the participants, ask questions and distribute the questions between the students in the different collaborating countries speaking different neighbor languages. To help in this situation is to have visible name tags on each student. A prerequisite is that the group collaboration leaders have to have the social skills as self-esteem, empathy, emotional intelligence as well as problem solving. Thus, these students need different types of cognitive, affective and social skills related to cope with a real situation performed synchronously with support of information and communication technology. Some students sometimes prove specific coping skills in this real context in the school and are not necessarily those students who are the most skilled within their native language. The engagement from the teachers is of vital importance for the students' active participation in the synchronous collaboration. Therefore the teachers have to take part in the background in each room in the different countries within the collaborating computer-mediated synchronous session. This will imply a more serious and engaged participation of all the students. The instructional strategies and advices the students got from the teachers in advance were of significant importance. Moreover, the teachers' engagement also has an impact on the students' sense of trust and security between each other and between the students in each collaborating country within the synchronous communication.

Vem tar bollen?: går vården för de mest sjuka äldre att förbättra?2016Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Flawed communications: Health professionals’ experience of collaboration in the care of frail elderly patients2018Inngår i: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1403-4948, E-ISSN 1651-1905, Vol. 46, nr 7, s. 680-689Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Aims: Frail elderly patients who have multiple illnesses do not fare well in modern health care systems, mainly due to a lack of care planning and flawed communication between health professionals in different care organisations. This is especially noticeable when patients are discharged from hospital. The aim of this study was to explore health care professionals’ experience of obstacles and opportunities for collaboration. Methods: Health professionals were invited to participate in three focus groups, each consisting of a hospital physician, a primary care physician, a hospital nurse, a primary care nurse, a municipal home care nurse or an assistant officer, a physical or occupational therapist and a patient or a family member representative. These individual people were then asked to discuss the obstacles and opportunities for communication between themselves and with the patients and their relatives when presented with the case report of a fictitious patient. Content analysis was used to identify categories. Results: Several obstacles were identified for effective communication and care planning: insufficient communication with patients and relatives; delayed collaboration between care-givers; the lack of an adequate responsible person for care planning; and resources not being distributed according to the actual needs of patients. The absence of an overarching responsibility for the patient, beyond organisational borders, was a recurring theme. These obstacles could also be seen as opportunities. Conclusions: Obstacles for collaboration were found on three levels: societal, organisational and individual. As health care professionals are well aware of the problems and also see solutions, management for health care should support employees’ own initiatives for changes that are of benefit in the care of frail elderly patients with multiple illnesses.

The Role of ICT for the Growth of Small Enterprises in Ethiopia2014Inngår i: Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries, ISSN 1681-4835, E-ISSN 1681-4835, Vol. 65, nr 1, s. 1-20Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Small enterprises strive to survive and grow in the business they are involved. They make efforts to utilize different resources and technologies available to this end as long as it is affordable and productive. Information Communication Technology or e-commerce are among those technologies that take the front line. This paper aims to define an adoption level of e-commerce in small Ethiopian enterprises and show that their business requirements and perceived benefits of e-commerce are related to business growth. It takes five small enterprises involved in import and export business to perform case study research on the issue and examines their utilization level of the technology. The findings show that small enterprises in the country have low levels of e-commerce utilization due to: (1) the scarcity of infrastructure development and expertise in the area, and (2) barriers created by government policy and bank regulations. However, this study found good understanding of the business opportunities and benefits that could be exploited from e-commerce.

A true and fair view: harmonization of the accounting2008Inngår i: European journal of management, ISSN 1555-4015, nr SummerArtikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to describe the essence of the concept "true and fair view, in Swedish "a correct view" (en rattvisande bild). The aim is also to present how this concept is practically handled in some different countries and how this has influenced the accounting internationally. In the harmonization process of the accounting in different countries the concept "true and fair view" have been important. Different accounting traditions have traditionally had an impact on the accounting in different countries. Which tradition a country belongs to is to a great extent dependent on how the companies in the country have financed their capital. The countries where the companies' capital is built up by a capital-based financial market with individual investors and shareholder have traditionally belonged to the Anglo-Saxon accounting tradition. In the countries traditionally belonged to the continental accounting tradition it is the polity and the credit-market who have financed the long-termed investments. Today, the financing market is being more and more globalized. This will impy that companies in different countries are needed to harmonize their financial accounting. Thereby some laws and directive in different countries are going to be changed.

    #metoo-management2018Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

A New Leadership and its Implications on Professions2014Inngår i: International Journal of Complexity in Leadership and Management, ISSN 1759-0256, E-ISSN 1759-0264, Vol. 2, nr 4, s. 293-312Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Organisations have become more knowledge-intensive and professional during the last decades. Professional work generally has certain specific properties related to its working context. For this study, two different case studies have been conducted within two different types of professions; aircraft maintenance and emergency healthcare, each respectively belonging to two distinct categories of professions: T(hing)- and L(ife)-professions. This paper analyses the importance of management and organisation for the use of information systems within T and L-professions. The aim of this paper is to highlight the specific characteristics for the two different types of professions, T and L, and how they are affected by the organisation and management. A further objective is to derive general challenges regarding professionals' use of information systems, related to the way of managing and organising the professional complex work. Finally, a new leadership for professional organisations is suggested and its implications are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose is to explore attitudes towards IT among various categories of health care staff; health care professions. We will identify problem areas that may be the reasons for why different attitudes among different professions at a healthcare organisation exist, and subsequently we will analyse how this may have impact on how to understand and use IT. The research question is: What factors may explain differences regarding attitudes to IT among different professions in a health care organisation? The paper reports from a particular study of the “NU” healthcare organisation in west Sweden. The results reveal two main problem areas: the infrastructural and the socio-organisational, which are discussed as analytical implications for bridging the gaps between different professions in health care organisations.

Challenges in Using IT Systems for Collaboration in Healthcare Services.2019Inngår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, ISSN 1661-7827, E-ISSN 1660-4601, Vol. 16, nr 10, artikkel-id E1773Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Frail elderly people refer to multi-diseased and vulnerable patients in need of medication and healthcare. These patients require healthcare from several different healthcare organizations, including hospital care, primary care, and municipal care services. This situation is challenging the capacity of healthcare organizations to manage inter-professional collaboration for person-centered care. This paper aims to identify challenges associated with collaboration between different healthcare organizations, related to the use of IT systems in the daily work practice. The paper was based on a qualitative study, which included three focus group interviews, each lasting for two hours. Each focus group consisted of a hospital physician, a primary care physician, a hospital nurse, a primary care nurse, a municipal home care nurse or an assistant officer, a physical or occupational therapist, and a family member representative. The interviews were analyzed with thematic analysis. Challenges identified in the study include insufficient information exchange, inconsistencies in communication, differences in the use of IT systems, and deficient coordination. The work processes that aim to promote collaboration between different healthcare organizations need to be better organized, and the use of IT systems needs to be better aligned.

How to Evaluate Collaboration within Research and Innovation2018Inngår i: Proceedings Cross-Cultural Business Conference 2018 / [ed] Margarethe Überwimmer, Robert Füreder, Martina Gaisch, Shaker Verlag, 2018, s. 319-327Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

To improve and strengthen regional development is often subject of political decisions. This is thesituation within the European Union, to increase innovation in SMEs. SMEs need access to knowledge, competence and collaboration, in order to increase their opportunities to develop competitiveness inproducts higher up in the value chain. The increasing rate of change in society also creates needs ofdecreasing the time from knowledge development to ready products to the market. Ongoing evaluationis prevalent in many research and development projects today in order to follow up the intended results. The ongoing evaluation could contribute to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of a specificinnovation project by highlight areas of improvement and needs of development. The purpose of thispaper is to analyze how collaboration within research and innovation can be evaluated, using a specificinnovation project as an example. Qualitative methods have been used for the data collection andanalysis, based on documents, interviews and participation in various activities. An intervention theory iscreated, as interpreted and structured based on information from documents and interviews. Theintervention theory should be further refined, and could be used to select important aspects of theinnovation project for the further evaluation. The intervention theory can be used to evaluate the causesand effects, and if the innovation project is reaching its intended final achievements and results.

Kunskapsintegrering med informationssystem i professionsorienterade praktiker2012Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on a professional perspective in the use of information systems. Information systems for knowledge integration in professional practices constitutes of dynamics for management and organization, where the professional work practice and information systems can be developed together. This thesis is started out from studies of two different professional work practices, aircraft maintenance and emergency health care, as both can be characterized as time- and life critical. The two different professional work practices can be seen as two different profession types. The four research questions in this thesis are:

What importance do the characteristics for T- and L-professions have, respectively, on the use of information systems?

What general challenges can be derived from professions’ use of information systems?

What importance do the management and organization have for T- and L-professions, respectively, on the use of information systems?

How can the use of information systems be organized in order to facilitate knowledge integration within professional work practices?

Two case studies with ethnographical influences have been conducted where the two different profession types constitute two defined cases.  These studies were initially inductive and exploratory, for then becoming more explanatory and somewhat normative at the final stage. One of the studies was conducted within the aircraft maintenance performed at the Swedish Airforce in cooperation with Volvo Aero Corporation. The other study was conducted within the Emergency Health Care incorporated in the NU Health Care, in Västra Götaland, Sweden.

The contribution of the thesis is aimed at showing that professional characteristics are important for trust, sense-making and engagement for, and in use of information systems. The thesis shows the need for seeing structures between professions and management as crucial for knowledge integration with information systems, where a new integrated leadership is suggested. This new integrated leadership is important for guiding the knowledge integration. Moreover, the thesis suggests a new approach to knowledge integration in order to bridge organic boundaries and limitations. This approach is called transact. Transacts within professional work practices are important in order to develop existing and future use of information systems as well as to integrate information systems into the complex work, so it can be effectively performed, with a high quality.

Professional Knowledge Sharing in Aircraft Maintenance: A New Complex in Dynamics2011Inngår i: International Journal of Complexity in Leadership and Management, ISSN 1759-0256, E-ISSN 1759-0264, ISSN 1759-0256, Vol. 1, nr 4, s. 322-338Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Aircraft maintenance can be described as a complex and interactive technical system. The ever increasing complex system of aircraft maintenance places much greater demands on the professionals carrying out this work including the leadership and management roles. This ethnographical study analyses this complex and intelligent aircraft maintenance work. Sharing of professional knowledge is of vital importance enhancing the innovative and creative work done in this domain. The aim of this paper is to highlight the challenges for the leadership and the management teams to effectively link complexity to the highly collective human intelligence that flourishes in this military domain. The challenges will be based on the empirical findings showing how the intrinsic leadership, collective intelligence and social dimensions such as cooperation, professional knowledge and management skills are played out within the communities of aircraft maintenance.

The Teachers' Perspective on School Leadership for ICT2015Inngår i: European Conference on Knowledge Management, Kidmore End: Academic Conferences International Limited , 2015, s. 742-748Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

School leaders have the pedagogical, as well as the financial, responsibility at the school. It is the school leader's task to manage the competence development of the pedagogical use of ICT at school. Digital tools are being more used in teaching activities in those days, and the teachers have to develop their competence in order to guide the students in their learning. This paper is based on a case study conducted within the GNU project (Cross Border Nordic Education). The GNU project is an ongoing Nordic educational project between classes in grades 5-9 in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The project is based on virtual communication between teachers and students, conducted with support of digital technology. The aim of the paper is to analyze the four dimensions of school leadership; 1) building vision and setting direction, 2) understanding and developing people, 3) redesigning the organization, and 4) managing the teaching and learning programme. The result shows that all of the school leadership dimensions work properly in one out of four different municipalities in order to support the teachers with the integration of digital tools in their teaching practices.

The Use of Information Systems in Professional Healthcare Work Practices2014Inngår i: International Journal of Sociotechnology and Knowledge Development (IJSKD), ISSN 1941-6253, E-ISSN 1941-6261, Vol. 6, nr 1, s. 51-64Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Over the last decades, organisations have increasingly been more knowledge intensive and professional. Professional work generally has certain specific properties related to its working context. In this paper, a case study conducted within emergency healthcare, in which professional groups like for example physicians and nurses were the objects of study, will be presented. This paper explores different characteristics of these professions in the time and life critical work practice performed within emergency healthcare. The aim of this paper is partly to analyse specific characteristics of the healthcare professions and their use of information systems, partly to identify the implications and challenges that the professions face while using information systems. Characteristics related to a certain healthcare profession can be seen as having an impact on its professionals' attitudes and use of information systems, both on an individual and on a collective level. Some challenges in the use of information systems can also be due to how the development of the system and implementation processes are organised.

Utveckling av samverkansarenor för arbetsintegrerat lärande2018Inngår i: VILÄR abstraktbok / [ed] Kristina Johansson, Trollhättan: Högskolan Väst , 2018, s. 1-1Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Inter-professional Learning for Teaching: Using Digital Tools2014Inngår i: Proceedings of 15th European Conference on Knowledge Management, Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited , 2014, s. 946-953Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The importance of inter‐professional learning and knowledge integra‐tion for teaching is increasing as the use of digital tools will challenge the peda‐gogical conditions within the school context. It is the responsibility of schools thatthe students can use modern technology as a tool for searching knowledge, forcommunication, as well as for creation and learning. Therefore, teachers often arechallenged in integrating digital tools in their pedagogical practices. It has beenobvious that the implementation of new digital tools in the classrooms has causedsome uncertainty within the school professions. Thus, professionals working inschools need to collaborate, interact and communicate with other professionalsin order to develop their knowledge within their work practice. Communities ofpractice are sharing a specific practice and can create a common understandingand sense‐making. Digital tools have occurred as resources for interaction andcollaboration at different locations and times, also to a great extent facilitatinginter‐professional work and learning. This paper is based on an action‐based qual‐itative study of a Nordic education project, with focus on the inter‐professionalcollaboration and the use of digital tools. In the project different professions asteachers, principals, IT‐pedagogues, IT‐technicians as well as researchers haveparticipated. The aim of this paper is to analyze conditions for how to enable in‐ter‐professional learning and knowledge integration through various digital tools.Knowledge acquired collectively is actually negotiated and accepted within acommunity of practice. To collaboratively produce common teaching cases, obvi‐ously challenges the creation of a system of collective knowledge. Challenges arealso related to the inter‐professional processes of learning as different profes‐sions are acting in different contexts. Trust between different individuals and pro‐fessions seems to be an important aspect together with participation in the com‐munities of practice for inter‐professional learning and knowledge integratingusing various digital tools in a virtual environment

    Abstract [en]

The aging population of the western world poses a medical challenge for the society of today and of the future. In hospitals, healthcare professionals manage health care with the objective to provide care of high quality using the limited available resources. The decision-making in production and capacity planning decisions requires coordination and management of knowledge in different hierarchical levels and in different time-frames. Thus, this knowledge management is also needed between various health care services within a hospital, as well as with other healthcare providers, at a horizontal level. This paper is based on a qualitative study, conducted as a case study at a hospital in western Sweden. Eleven managers together with their production controllers were interviewed. This paper aims to analyze the challenges the health care at the hospital face related to the knowledge management in the production and capacity planning and control of activities performed. The difficulties found refers to limitations in knowledge management according to three different themes identified. These themes are the influence of political decisions, coordination and participation, and methods and IT-systems.

Growth of Ecological Production in the Agricultural Sector2008Inngår i: Uddevalla Symposium 2008: Spatial Dispersed Production and Network Governance : Revised papers presented at the 11th Uddevalla Symposium, 15-17 May, 2008, Kyoto, Japan  / [ed] Iréne Bernhard, Trollhättan: University West , 2008, s. 359-372Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The agricultural sector in Sweden has been experienced rather large changes through the last twenty to thirty years. The ecological production of foodstuff has increased during the last years. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the marketing strategies performed by the ecological farmers and its cluster. Then the paper will analyse and discuss how sucessful the marketing strategies have been, in comparison to the marketing strategies theories. There is now a cultural shift in food consuming, where more people choose ecological produced KRAV-foodstuff. It depends on that people has been more aware of environmental- and climate issues. Consumers chose to buy ecological products, as KRAV-products, because their values accord with a good environment, good caring of animals, and also because of health and social responsibility. In the marketing communication process it is important to inform and make potential customers aware of a firm´s or an organization´s offering. Therefore for example the Internet is a fruitful tool to convey different types of messages to the customers. We believe that the consumption of ecological products could increase more and faster if there is effective and lasting environment marketing. Until now there has been some restrictions of contracs for ecological farmers.

IT systems for collaboration in healthcare for frail elderly people2016Inngår i: Proceedings of the European Conference on Knowledge Management, ECKM / [ed] Galbraith B.,Moffett S.,Galbraith B., Academic Conferences Limited , 2016, Vol. 2016-January, s. 859-866Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The ageing population of the western world poses a medical challenge for society of today and of the future. Frail elderly people are described as multi-diseased and vulnerable patients who are in need of medication and hospital care. These patients require healthcare from several different caregivers within the health services, including hospital-based acute care services, primary care services and community care services. This situation will challenge the capacity of the health services to manage inter-professional collaboration for patient-centered care. The aim of this paper is to identify challenges that caregivers within the health services face in relation to the IT systems that are used in their daily work practice, in their collaborative work and for sharing of information and knowledge. The paper is based on a qualitative study which includes three focus group interviews that were conducted within a healthcare organization in the western part of Sweden. The focus groups consisted of all types of professionals who can be found within each of the included healthcare organizations, as well as representatives of relatives of frail elderly people. Each one of the three focus group interviews conducted lasted for two hours. Afterwards, the interviews were analyzed with thematic analysis. The study identifies challenges within the following themes related to the use of IT systems: insufficient information, incoherent communication, differing uses of IT systems and deficient coordination.

Knowledge Integration in Profession-Oriented Work: a Cross-Case Analysis2010Inngår i: 2010 Organization Learning, Knowledge, and Capabilities Conference, Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, US June 3‐4, 2010, Boston, USA: Northeastern University , 2010, s. 1-3Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Different professions conduct their on-goingprofessional work in various forms of organizations, in order to accomplishcomplex and sometimes both time- and life-critical activities. Knowledge is aprerequisite resource in performing work in such activities and sometimes thework requires collaboration across boundaries between professional groups andspecializations. Hence, knowledge is integrated in such work settings, andknowing is a central concept to make sense of the professionals doing and theircollaborating actions. In this paper we present and analyze two ethnographicalcase studies. The aim is to understand how different types ofprofession-orientated work practices can be facilitated through informationsystems (IS) support in order to improve collaboration and knowledgeintegration between different groups and professions. The analysis of the casesshows both differences and similarities regarding the integration of knowledge. We use the concepts of boundary objects, brokers and boundary spanningactivities as a facilitating foundation for the integration of knowledge amongthe different professions. From the results we discuss some proposals fordesign of new ways of IS support for knowledge integration.

Attitudes to information technology in health care professions2009Inngår i: The 17th European Conference on Information Systems, Verona, june 8-10, 2009., 2009Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to explore attitudes towards IT among various categories of health care staff; health care professions. We will identify problem areas that may be the reasons for why different attitudes among different professions at a healthcare organisation exist, and subsequently we will analyse how this may have impact on how to make sense of IT use. The research question is: What factors may explain differences regarding attitudes to IT among different professions in a health care organisation?

The paper reports from a particular study of the “NU” healthcare organisation in west Sweden. The results reveal two main problem areas: i) the infrastructural and; ii) the socio-organisational. These are discussed as analytical implications for bridging the gaps between different professions in health care organisations.

Students’ Use of Semiotic Structures in Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication: An Inter-Scandinavian Study2013Inngår i: The European Conference on Technology in the Classroom, Brighton, UK 2013, The European Conference on Technology in the Classroom Conference Proceedings 2013, Nagoya, Japan: The International Academic Forum (IAFOR) , 2013, s. 150-163Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Synchronous computer-mediated communication is often used as a means to achieve activelearning through collaboration. This paper is based on an ethnographic case study ofsynchronous communication. The synchronous communication is carried out between students in lower secondary school collaborating in a cross-border project involving the native language subjects Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. The project is aimed at promoting the students` Scandinavian inter-comprehension skills. The objective is for the students to use their own native languages in their communication whilst trying to understand the neighbouring languages used by their interlocutors. The aim of this paper is to analyse the students` use of situated semiotic structures in order to solve comprehension difficulties as well as emergent technical problems. In the emergent situations where the students face technical or language-based problems they use an interplay of different semiotic structures. They creatively and spontaneously use oral and written communication in different ways by using smileys, colours, gestures, grimaces, talking slowly and by sending smartphone pictures. Furthermore, they make use of different conversational forms such as online chats, Google Translate, and webcams. Synchronous communication is vulnerable because of the dependency relationship arising between the connected classrooms in different schools and countries. The multiple forms of conversation are dependent on the emergent situation and are dominated by the written mode.
