Media’s framing of the Terrorist Attack in Nice: A case study of how CNN and Al-Jazeera framed the involved actors in Nice.2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

News media has a prominent role in people’s lives and acts as the first lens that communicates news from across the world. This Bachelor thesis aims to investigate the two news outlets CNN and Al-Jazeera and their respective framing of actors involved in the 2016 terrorist attack in Nice, France. Specifically, this thesis examines how CNN and Al-Jazeera frames civilians and the perpetrator as victims or non-victims. The theoretical chapter covers the framing theory by Robert Entman to work as a general foundation for the analysis. It also includes the ideal victim theory by Nils Christie, which is further developed in line with Joris van Wijk’s international conceptualization of the theory. The analytical framework is based on the ideal victim theory and will work to guide the analysis. The analysis finds that CNN and Al-Jazeera share similarities in terms of their framing of civilian victims, while AlJazeera spends more time with Muslim victims and providing their perspective. The framing of the perpetrator differs and CNN provides a more western versus non-western conflict where the perpetrator represents a non-western Islamic community, that cannot be victimized. Al-Jazeera accentuates the distinction between fundamentalists and ordinary Muslims. Regular Muslims in France are granted victimhood and framed as being caught between a western and non-western conflict.

Heroes or Traitors?: A comparative study on how U.S. liberal and conservative leading news articles frame Julian Assange & Edward Snowden2018Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to compare how U.S. liberal and conservative media frames the whistleblowers Julian Assange and Edward Snowden. The questions we want to answer are, 1. What traits of heroes can be found in U.S. liberal and conservative media? 2. What traits of traitors can be found in U.S. liberal and conservative media? 3. Is there a difference between the U.S. liberal and conservative media’s representation of Assange and Snowden? In order to analyze the liberal and conservative media, the ontology of social constructivism and theories of framing, ideal types and political ideologies will be used. A qualitative comparative analysis will be conducted in order to find traits of our created ideal types, heroes and traitors in the liberal and conservative U.S. media. The analysis will show that there are great differences in how the newspapers frame the whistleblowers Assange and Snowden.

Advertisement Through the Male Gaze: A Qualitative Study on How Gendered Fashion Advertisement is Perceived2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor’s thesis examines the perception of gender stereotyped fashion advertisement according to two generational groups of women (>60 or <25) without university degrees. The study is comparative and derives from a problem definition which focuses on the (re)production of gender roles through advertisement which perpetuates unequal power structures. The study aims to describe the perception of the two groups through in-depth interviews with six women in total. Thus, the study uses a qualitative approach and has a twoparted theoretical framework. The selection of advertisements that are reviewed by the respondents originates from the Male Gaze theory and the Madonna/Whore Complex with indicators of nudity and position. Moreover, the interviewees’ responses are analyzed through the Madonna/Whore Complex, the Objectification Theory and the Theory of Generations. This thesis suggests that the categorization of women as Whores or Madonnas in advertisement is perceived to be true by both groups. It proposes a great generational difference, as that the younger generation women see the categorization of women as either Whores or Madonnas in the social world, while the older do not. Concluding, harmful beauty norms and feminine behavioral traits seem to be partly internalized

Colonial discourse in development aid publications: A Comparative study of the UK and Sweden2018Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is performed as a comparative small-N study making use of post-colonial theory aiming to analyse whether, and if so how, Western government agencies working in the field of 'development assistance' reinforce colonial stereotypes by availing colonial discourse. Post-colonial and discourse theory are used to challenge colonial theory, allowing to break the binary opposition and power structures of the Self and the Other, opening a third space where hybrid identities can be acknowledged.

With Critical Discourse Analysis serving as a tool in the construction of a text analytical method applied to the documents published by the Swedish governmental development agency, Sida and the British Department for International Development (DFID) to examine whether and how they (re-)produce colonial discourse in their publications.

The monumental role of Britain in the colonisation of lands and people versus Sweden's comparatively small and short territorial possession of colonies, and especially how both nations relate differently to their colonial past represented in contemporary discourse, makes this paper an interesting comparative study. The research contributes to knowledge on how Western governmental development agencies sustain and/or contest remnants of colonial structures embedded and projected through discourse.

The main findings of this study are that both the DFID and Sida engage in and (re-)produce CD in their publications. However, to a certain extent they do differ, with Sida making use of non-CD to a significantly larger extent than the DFID.

Media and the Muslims: A thesis on media framing & priming in Argentina2011Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

All over the western world, media are giving Muslims the role as scapegoats for everything that is wrong with society. Through grave generalizations as well as alleged connections between Islam and terrorism, social categorizations are established in which Muslims become the ‘others’. Research has been made on a various amount of western nations, with the exception of a few, and this thesis explores how Argentinean media portray Islam and Muslims. With the use of quantitative and qualitative text analyses, the result will show the levels of priming and framing in relation to earlier research. By assuming social constructivism, a high frequency of these two ‘faces of power’ would affect societal relations, possibly creating a gap between an ‘us’ and ‘them’. Our findings suggest, however, this is not the case in Argentina; on the contrary, Argentinean media lack the frames which make Muslims ‘others’. This important discovery implies that the relationship between Islam and the West of today does not necessarily have to be one of two combatants, incapable of coexisting.

Donald Trump - The American Machiavelli?: A single case study of Trump’s political leadership in relation to the USMexican border wall2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The following bachelor’s thesis aims to examine Donald Trump’s political leadership style, and which leadership attributes he displays to gain follower support behind political policy propositions. Based on the leadership theories of Machiavellianism and charismatic leadership, the thesis more specifically examines: How Donald Trump, if at all, displays Machiavellian and charismatic leadership attributes in his political leadership. In particular, how are these attributes displayed when justifying his proposition of a US-Mexican border wall? The thesis builds upon a single case study and uses a qualitative content analysis in order to analyze the data. Through gathered speeches from the search tool “factba.se”, it has been observed that Trump’s leadership concerning the wall against the Mexican border display certain Machiavellian and charismatic leadership attributes. The results indicate that the most frequently displayed attributes in Trump’s political leadership regarding the wall is that he uses authoritarian and confident arguments to a higher extent than narcissistic and controversial arguments to justify his proposition of a US-Mexican border wall.

Personal Experiences of Somali Women in Uddevalla: A comparative case study on Somali women’s understandings of their experiences in the integration process2018Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In connection to an existing research project, Micro-migration and Integration with relevance for Uddevalla, this study aims to analyse and compare the subjective understandings of Somali women’s experiences in the integration process in the Swedish society. Integration is a multifaceted and ongoing process in which the self-understandings of this notion is bound to change over time in relation to socio-economic and cultural contexts. In light of this, the thesis employs a comparative case study that is based on data collected through focus group discussions with newly arrived women and women who have stayed in Sweden for a longer time. The analytical framework utilizes acculturation theory to study what traces of integration, assimilation, separation and marginalization can be identified in the selfunderstandings and how they develop over time. Some of the conclusions from the study by the interviewees notify language being crucial. Both groups understand that Swedish constitutes a step in the overall process for establishment and the newly arrived women showed an awareness about it being the ultimate factor that can speed up their own integration process. The findings of the research include that there is a deviation of the understandings between the groups when it comes to housing and identity. The group of newly arrived women with the exception of one participant, indicated a clear separation in regard to both aspects above whereas the women who have lived in Sweden for 9-10 years showed clear traces of integration. Hence, in the beginning of the integration process a person might have a theoretical understanding that indicates separation but experience a discursive shift towards the lens of integration.

New Public Management Vs Professionalism: A qualitative case study of the local political governance and its effect on the role and autonomy of teachers in the Swedish public compulsory schools2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The last three decades have been characterized with tremendous changes and reformations in the Swedish school policy as a result from the global trend of reorganizing the public sector. These reformations consisted of shifting the responsibility of managing the organization and financial distribution from the government to the local municipalities. However, with that fact, the Swedish educational sector has been experiencing a teacher shortage especially in the public compulsory schools at the local level. Which leads to the purpose of this study how local authorities are promoting teachers and their role.

The aim of this thesis is to study and analyze how the local political governance is designed (through local policies/regulations, financial management and auditing) is affecting the role and autonomy of teachers in the public compulsory schools in relation to the new public management and professionalism as management models. This is a qualitative descriptive case study where the municipality of Trollhättan and its local regulatory tools will be analyzed, and where potential conflicts that may arise between the two management models will be theoretically explained.

Finally, as the analysis shows, there are features of the disagreement between the new public management and professionalism (control and autonomy) in the design of the local political governance of the school policy and its effect on the role of teachers. It is also remarkable that the way of governance of the school policy by local authorities plays an important role in promoting the role of teachers.

New Course, New Discourse, New Racism?: Right-Wing Alternative Media in Sweden2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Like elsewhere in Europe, the tides of nationalist right-wing rhetoric in Sweden have become instrumental in generating a wave of anti-liberal and anti-immigration sentiments in politics and media. In particular, one branch of right-wing alternative media has become a breeding ground for normalizing such rhetoric. Does the anti-immigration stance in such media disguise racist inclinations? In this thesis we examine the discourse of three right-wing alternative media sites in Sweden to explore the possible employment of different types of racism in their articles. By taking the constructivist viewpoint and adopting the post-colonial conceptions of the 'Self' and the 'Other', racist discourse was analyzed and characterized as either biological or cultural. From these two theories, we derived concepts concerning descriptions of contemporary and ideal Swedish society that will be used as further indicators of racist discourses. In this single case study, 94 articles from Fria Tider, Nya Tider, and Samhällsnytt were analyzed on the topics of immigration, integration and crime through a qualitative content analysis. The results show that most of the articles contain cultural racist discourse.

Who is the victim?: A descriptive single case study of the United Nations’ construction of the sex trafficking victim2016Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a descriptive single case study where the construction of the sex trafficking victims by the UN is analysed. More specifically, the study examines the construction of the actual victim and non-victim through the theoretical assumptions of masculinity and femininity. It asks 1) How does femininity and masculinity contribute to the construction of the actual victim by the UN? and 2) How does femininity and masculinity contribute to the construction of the non-victim by the UN? Making it possible to draw conclusions about the "ideal victim" of sex trafficking. Through the use of qualitative content analysis, we look at how the UN uses feminine and masculine assumptions in the construction of sex trafficking victim. The findings indicate that the UN uses more feminine assumption when describing the actual victim and masculine assumptions when describing the non-victim. Hence, supporting the construction of "ideal victim" being a woman. As the UN is a significant actor on the field of trafficking issue, the assumptions and ideas it spreads through its documents and media campaigns, has a significant affect to other actors in the field, IOs, IGOs, NGOs and governments, thus spreading the socially constructed gender stereotypes of the female victim and male predator.

Sweden Democrats and Islamophobia: A qualitative study of how the Sweden Democrats construct Islam in their ideology2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to describe and examine how the Sweden Democrats construct Islam and if there are any Islamophobic elements in their ideology. We have chosen to examine the Sweden Democrats from the period before the election in 2009, when they entered the Swedish parliament in 2010 up until 2017. The Sweden democrats have developed the way the party construct Islam in their rhetoric from the period before the party got elected and the period after. We found it interesting to further look at the period when the party explicitly criticized Islam and when it became implicit. In this way we shed a light on how the Sweden Democrats might have used the creation of fear of Islam in order to gain voters. However, the problem in our question is although to see how they construct Islam and if there are any Islamophobic elements in their ideology. Based on the ontology of social constructivism and theories connected to Islamophobia, a qualitative analysis will be conducted to describe the Islamophobic elements that might exist within the party. We will present a further explanation of the concepts in the theory chapter and will also be used in the conduction of an analysis of the party's ideology. The three main areas of interests which are religious, cultural and political differences will be connected to the definitions of Islamophobia and will be analyzed separately. By doing so, it became clear that the party developed their way of expressing concerns of immigration and assimilation of Muslims in Sweden. Our results show that the Sweden Democrats are not Islamophobic regarding all our main areas. Rather, the party has only shown clear Islamophobic elements in the area of cultural differences and problems that occurs with immigration of Muslims during the time before the election. These types of messages are hard to find within the party today.

Media Discourse & Representations of Refugees in Sweden: A descriptive and comparative study of how refugees have been represented in Swedish newspapers before and after the implementation of the new immigration policies of 20162017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor's thesis is a descriptive study of the refugee media discourse and refugee media representations during 2016 in the 5 biggest Swedish newspapers (Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen, Göteborgs-Posten, and Svenska Dagbladet). This thesis focuses on the news articles and explores the representations of refugees in these articles prior to the implementation of new Swedish migration policies, from Jan 1, 2016 until July 20, 2016 and after their implementation, i.e. from July 20, 2016 to Dec 31, 2016. The analysis of the data by using discourse theory and the representations theory in of the us vs them field and the economic and security threat field reveals that a change and shift in the refugee media discourse and the representations of refugees occurred between the two time periods.

The process of implementing a new working method - a project towards change in a Swedish psychiatric clinic2014Ingår i: Journal of Hospital Administration, ISSN 1927-6990, E-ISSN 1927-7008, Vol. 3, nr 6, s. 174-189Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The implementation of evidence-based methods in hospital settings is difficult and complex. The aim of the present study was to highlight the implementation process concerning a new working method, i.e. a new assessment tool, based on the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF), among psychiatric nursing staff on five participating wards at a Swedish county hospital. Descriptive, qualitative data were collected through focus group interviews pre- and post-implementation. Data were analysed using directed content analysis, guided by Normalization Process Theory (NPT). The results revealed that just one of the five participating wards met the criteria for a successful implementation process. The results confirm previous studies showing the difficulty of implementation. Although participants agreed with the intention of the model, they were reluctant to apply it in practice. The implementation process seemed to be influenced by factors such as: time pressure; heavy workload; stress; lack of routines in using the tool; lack of nursing staff; as well as cultural characteristics and resistance to change.

Managing boundaries at the accident scene: a qualitative study of collaboration exercises2014Ingår i: International Journal of Emergency Services, ISSN 2047-0894, E-ISSN 2047-0908, Vol. 3, nr 1, s. 77-94Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify what is practiced during collaboration exercises and possible facilitators for inter-organisational collaboration.

Design/methodology/approach Interviews with 23 participants from four exercises in Sweden were carried out during autumn 2011. Interview data were subjected to qualitative content analysis.

Findings Findings indicate that the exercises tend to focus on intra-organisational routines and skills, rather than developing collaboration capacities. What the participants practiced depended on roles and order of arrival at the exercise. Exercises contributed to practicing leadership roles, which was considered essential since crises are unpredictable and require inter-organisational decision-making.

Originality/value The results of this study indicate that the ability to identify boundary objects, such as injured/patients, was found to be important in order for collaboration to occur. Furthermore, lessons learned from exercises could benefit from inter-organisational evaluation. By introducing and reinforcing certain elements and distinct aims of the exercise, the proactive function of collaboration exercises can be clarified.

Making collaboration work: Developing boundary work and boundary awareness in emergency exercises2017Ingår i: Journal of Workplace Learning, ISSN 1366-5626, E-ISSN 1758-7859, Vol. 29, nr 4, s. 286-303Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Collaboration in emergency work is challenging on many levels. The unforeseen and temporary nature of incidents presents basic challenges. Another important challenge is boundaries between specialized and autonomous emergency service organizations. We need to know more about how exercises are performed to increase the individuals and organizations preparedness for future joint response work. The aim of this study was to explore how boundary work is carried out at the incident site during exercises, and how boundary awareness is developed based on this boundary work. The analytic focus was on how boundaries were identified, negotiated and managed in the participants work. Empirically, full-scale exercises involving police, ambulance and rescue services and with repetition of practical scenarios and joint-reflection seminars are studied. Much of the work in the exercises was performed within distinct areas of expertise, in accordance with concrete routines, skills and responsibilities. Boundary work was often organized in the form of distribution of labour or creating chains of actions. The exercises shed light on challenges related to other aspects of emergency response, such as a lack of resources, diverging primary responsibilities, time-criticality and hazardous environments. The design allowed participants to explicate boundaries, test and discuss alternative solutions, and to visualize the effects of different solutions as the scenarios were repeated. The boundaries that were identified were often of institutional character, and were also related to the specific scenarios and to the actions taken in the activities. By integrating real-life experiences of collaborative work in the exercise, the exercise gained a certain meaning that was essential for the participants to develop boundary awareness.

    Abstract [sv]

Democracy Spinning backwards?: A study of agency advocacy in Sweden2011Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to assess whether agency advocacy in newspapers debate articles has increased since the 1970’s and what forms agency advocacy take. This is done by investigating if the number or share of debate articles written by agencies increased from the 1970’s to the 2000’s, what types of communication approaches and subjects that are used over the years. The theoretical approach is based on research about new public management (NPM) and mediatisation through a normative institutionalist perspective. It is mainly a quantitative study where we collect debate articles from four different decades and code the content according to three ideal types: information, agency advocacy by promoting issue and agency advocacy by legitimating agency.  The thesis finds that the share and to some extent the number of debate articles has increased over the years, which supports the NPM theory and in part mediatisation theory. All ideal types are present; agency advocacy exists in all analysed debate articles while information is highly absent.  There is little change over the years which make it difficult to assess which theory that is supported.

Western Cinematic Representations of Sub-Saharan Post-Colonial Africa: An in-depth qualitative content analysis of Blood Diamond, Hotel Rwanda and The Last King of Scotland2018Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to analyze the representation of how the colonial past, in itself and in its consequences, is portrayed in Blood Diamond, Hotel Rwanda and The Last King of Scotland. All three movies are produced in Hollywood and they will be analyzed in an in-depth Small-N study. Our analytical framework is drawn from theories on how film creates meaning, postcolonial theory that includes concepts from Fanon, Said and Young, colonial patterns regarding Sub-Saharan Africa and finally Eurocentrism. Our three movies which serve as data, are analyzed with a qualitative content analysis through themes extracted from our theories in order for us to see how the colonial past is represented. Our findings show that in all three movies it was a representation of a colonial past portrayed in different ways regarding which theme that was being analyzed. The analysis further shows that the representation of the colonial past was seen as an underlying meaning, in the portrayal in the direct dialogues, or it was represented differently depending on whose perspective that was being told in all three movies. The intention of this thesis is to contribute to the field of Western representation of “the other” in movies and the representation of its colonial heritage.

Women in the Swedish Armed Forces: How does the Swedish Armed Forces promote women in order to attract them to their organisation?2016Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The following Bachelor thesis is analysing how the Swedish armed forces promotes women in order to attract them to their organisation. Specifically it investigates (1) "How does the Swedish armed forces break the social norms of what it means to be a soldier?" (2) "How do they present a gender equal division of labour?" (3) "How do they try to affect women´s attitude towards the organisation?" This study investigates the Swedish armed forces, an organisation with a great underrepresentation of women. The underrepresentation of women is something that the Swedish armed forces openly tries to change through their marketing. This thesis is a single case study with both qualitative and quantitative approach, using Harding´s gender process theory in a descriptive design. By gathering television commercials from the Swedish armed forces user page on YouTube, I explore how the Swedish armed forces tries to minimize the underrepresentation of women. Their strategies are analysed by using Harding´s three gender processes. The results show that the organisation is active in all three processes, but focuses on breaking the social norms of what it means to be a soldier.

Perceptions of integration: We came here to add more colour in a colourful society2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to see how asylum seeking refugees, between the ages of 18-25 years old, perceive their integration and to further investigate if the perception of integration differs within this group. More specifically this thesis asks two questions: (1) How do young asylum seeking men and women perceive the concept of integration in terms of mutuality and onesidedness? (2) Are there any similarities or differences within this group when it comes to their perceptions of integration? This thesis is designed as a qualitative case study with comparative elements and semi-structured interview questions. It consists of a combination of a theory of integration as a process within the economic, social and political spheres, and a theory of integration as a process based on mutual adjustment or one-sided adjustment relationships. From the analysis, it resulted that there are more differences than similarities among the asylum seeking refugees. Especially among men and women when it comes to the perception of integration, and more specifically within the economic and social sphere. Within the economic sphere, women strongly associate this with a one-sided relationship, while men tend to perceive that relationship within the social sphere. However, both women and men expressed the need for a mutual relationship within the political sphere due to the asylum process which lies in the hands of the society and not something that these women and men can decide on their own.

Swedish government domestic rhetoric that justifies land investments in Africa: A Case Study2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is conducted as a single case study with a qualitative approach. With the help of Bacchi’s ‘what is the problem represented to be’ (WPR) approach, we conducted qualitative textual analysis on official publications collected from the Swedish government; Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) to understand how land investment in Africa is framed in these publications, specifically, in terms of the environmental, economic and socio-political benefits it provides for the Swedish citizens, host country and the world at large. This study contributes to the knowledge of how policy is justified with respect to different actors by referring to their interests, although such kinds of justification contradict the image potraited by the country. Through publications analyzed, the findings show that a sustainable environment, improvement of gender equality and women’s rights and economic growth are the main justifications for Sweden’s land investment in Africa. The overall conclusion is that more emphasis is put on economic justification in host country interest while on Sweden and Global interest they emphasis more on environmental interests.

Legitimacy During Coup Attempts:: A comparative study about the US media framing of coup attempts in Venezuela (2002) and Turkey (2016)2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to describe and compare the differences and similarities for US mainstream media’s representation of two different coup attempts by using Robert Entman’s Framing theory in terms of legitimacy. The chosen cases are the coup attempt in Turkey (2016) which is an US ally, having a right-wing government and the coup attempt in Venezuela (2002) which has a strained relationship with the US and having left-wing government. The research applies qualitative approach to conduct a small-n case study for comparing and analyzing how the media framed the legitimacy of acts and actors during these two coup attempts. This is an attempt to describe the problematization of theory becoming practice for the US mainstream media regarding the presentation of what is legitimate and what is not. The definition of legitimacy is very clear, but the US mainstream media have issues to reflect this definition to the reality.

The use of legal arguments in Brexit political communication: Legal narrative in political communication within the Brexit environment2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a descriptive analysis of the importance and use of legal argumentation in the Brexit political communication environment. The emphasis of this thesis is placed upon relevant politicians either in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom or European Commission as the main negotiator form the European Union side in the withdrawal process. Legal arguments present a crucial part of the Brexit process, all the way from the referendum up until this point, they are proving to be the most important thing in the political communication in regards to Brexit. Priming and framing theoretical approaches are utilized in order to determine their importance and how politicians differ in their portrayal in order to satisfy their political preferences.

The aim is to successfully provide a description of the use of such arguments by the politicians in their own manner, to understand how party affiliates and political preferences are portraying their meaning, thus revealing their importance. The research uses many analytical and methodological aspects, more precisely, qualitative research analysis, along with content analysis approach since the research will reflect on the text-based data.

The analysis is conducted in accordance to analytical framework, and theoretical guidance of the priming and framing theory. The deduced frames, along with the requisites of the priming theory, represent the basis for the structure of the analysis section. The analysis section also reflects on the two actors of the Brexit phenomenon, so that the research addresses the theoretical aspects, and also respect the fact that the research is conducted in the Brexit environment.

Based on the shown data, the results show that politicians are indeed using legal arguments to present other issues, and the research also reveals which kind of legal arguments are most used. It shows the way in which politicians are utilizing legal argumentation since they are shifting the focus away from the legal argumentation and placing it on other issues. It is also shown which of the legal arguments are most prevalent and most frequent among the analyzed data. The direct way in which the results have been shown are related to the research questions, and there are three of them.

Research questions have been established by the help of the theoretical approaches of priming and framing theories. The first research question relates to the use of legal argumentation and their portrayal in international relations sense, and from the shown data it is established that legal argumentation is used to shift the focus from legal arguments to international relations issues, and furthermore the data showed which legal arguments have been used most frequently. Both of these results are related to the nature of the framing and priming theories, framing in which the salience is placed on particular issues, thus shifted from others, and priming in which it has shown what arguments have been used the most.

The second research question relates to the use of legal argumentation and their portrayal in an economic sense, and from the shown data it is established that legal argumentation is used to shift the focus from legal arguments to economic issues, and furthermore the data showed which legal arguments have been used most frequently.

Both of these results are related to the nature of the framing and priming theories, framing in which the salience is placed on particular issues, thus shifted from others, and priming in which it has shown what arguments have been used the most.

The third research question relates to the use of legal argumentation and their portrayal in human rights sense, and from the shown data it is established that legal argumentation is used to shift the focus from legal arguments to human rights issues, and furthermore the data showed which legal arguments have been used most frequently. Both of these results are related to the nature of the framing and priming theories, framing in which the salience is placed on particular issues, thus shifted from others, and priming in which it has shown what arguments have been used the most.

    Abstract [sv]

Ideology Convergence Within The Alliance Coalition In Sweden.: A critical case study of the similarities and differences between the non-socialistic parties in Sweden, 2002 and 2010.2014Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The ideological similarities between political parties in Europe are increasing which makes the future of politics unsure. We know from previous coalition research that parties which is ideologically similar to each other are more likely to form a coalition than parties with large ideological differences. Thus there is a lack of research which analyses ideology convergence within coalitions. The aim of this study is to examine the ideological convergence within the Alliance coalition in Sweden by analysing the differences and similarities before and after the Alliance creation in 2004. This study will investigate the political parties' liberal ideology convergence according to two ideal types, social liberalism and neoliberalism. This thesis are studying if and how the parties within the non-socialist Alliance coalition in Sweden, which ruled between 2006 and 2014, adjusted their ideology to each other in order to govern successfully. With a social constructivist approach, a textual content analysis of election manifestos from 2002 and 2010 will analyse the possible ideology convergence of the Alliance coalition. The result of this study is that two out of four parties made an ideology convergence when entering the coalition which made Social Liberalism to be the dominated ideology. With the use of Downs (1957) centripetal pattern a conclusion was drawn regarding stable long run coalitions in general. The Alliance coalition has demonstrated that parties within stable long run coalitions tend to converge their ideology towards the parties in the middle of the ideological spectrum. In the end, this thesis comes to the conclusion that parties which enters a stable, long run coalition and converge towards the middle as the Alliance coalition, risks to lose votes to new extreme parties which arises from the edges of the ideological spectrum.

Securing the Arctic: A comparative study of mainstream media representation of the securitization of the Arctic in Norway and Canada2018Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to describe and compare how the securitization of the Arctic is represented in mainstream media of Norway and Canada. As two Arctic nations part of the likeminded group in international relations it is interesting to see how national media frames respective nations’ Arctic interests and strategy. Based on securitization and framing theory this thesis identifies themes and trends surrounding the Arctic by using three different security concepts: economic security, traditional security and environmental security. The data for study will be in total 189 full-text articles from both nations’ mainstream media, where search terms relating to a security grammar will be used. A qualitative content analysis will be employed on articles from Norwegian media, specifically Aftenposten, and Canadian media, The Globe and Mail. The analysis will show that both Norwegian and Canadian mainstream media thematically framed the securitization of the Arctic predominantly through the same security concepts. Yet there were differences in relation to attitudes towards Arctic securitization where Canadian media showed a more assertive disposition towards other nations involvement. Norwegian media, on the other hand was more inclined towards regional cooperation.

    Common incentives for teamwork: the unspoken contract´s significance2014Ingår i: Team Performance Management, ISSN 1352-7592, E-ISSN 1758-6860, Vol. 20, nr 1/2, s. 65-80Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The purpose of this article was to identify and study common incentives for teamwork.

Design/methodology/approach - The study was designed as a case study. The case consists of teamwork at a univer-sity hospital. At the hospital, ten psychiatric teams were studied for a period of four years (2008-2011). Each team was followed for 12–18 months. Data were collected through interviews (n = 48) and observations (n = 52) of the teamwork at treatment conferences.

Findings - The common incentives identified consist of shared responsibility, appreciation and long-sightedness. The incidence of a silent contract is highlighted as an explanation for the team's cohesion.

Research limitations/implications - The study is conducted in a public organisation within one field. The results should therefore be interpreted with some caution.

Practical implications - The study is useful for practitioners to understand the importance of common incentives as a collective driving force. By developing well-adapted common incentives, the practical work can be developed, refined and improved.

Originality/value - The significance of common incentives and the unspoken contract in the team is identified.

    Doctors’ functional leadership inpsychiatric healthcare teams: a reversible leadership logic2015Ingår i: Team Performance Management, ISSN 1352-7592, E-ISSN 1758-6860, Vol. 21, nr 3/4, s. 159-180Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to study how psychiatric doctors practise leadership in multidisciplinary healthcare teams. The paper seeks to answer the question: How do psychiatric doctors lead multidisciplinary teams during treatment conferences?

Design/methodology/approach: Six psychiatric teams were studied at a university hospital. Each team was observed over a period of 18 months, and data were collected during four years (2008-2011). Data were collected through interviews with doctors (n19) and observations (n30) of doctors’ work in multidisciplinary psychiatric teams.

Findings: Doctors in a multidisciplinary team use either self-imposed or involuntary leadership style. Oscillating between these two extremes was a strategy for handling the internal tensions of the team.

Research limitations/implications: The study was a case study, performed during treatment conferences at psychiatric wards in a university hospital. This limitation means that there is cause for some caution in generalising the results.

Practical implications: The results are useful for understanding leadership in multidisciplinary medical teams. By understanding the reversible logic of leadership, cooperation and knowledge sharing can be gained, which means that a situation of mere peaceful coexistence can be avoided. Understanding the importance of the informal contract makes it possible to switch leadership among team members. A reversible leadership with an informal contract makes the team less vulnerable. The team’s professionals can thus easily handle dif cult situations and internal tensions, facilitating leadership and management of multidisciplinary teams.

Originality/value: Doctors in multidisciplinary psychiatric teams use reversible leadership

    Abstract [sv]

    How doctors practice teamleadership2014Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The overall purpose of the article was to study how doctors practise leadership in multidisciplinary teams. The article seeks to answer the question: Which approach do doctors use to lead multidisciplinary psychiatric teams?

Methodology: Six psychiatric teams were studied at a university hospital. Each team was followed for eighteen months. Data were collected during a period of four years (2008–2011). Data were collected through interviews with doctors (n = 19) and observations (n = 30) of doctors’ work in a multidisciplinary psychiatric team.

Findings: Doctors in a multidisciplinary team use either self-imposed or involuntary leadership. Oscillating between these two extremes is called reversible leadership.

Research limitations: The study was performed at a psychiatric ward during treatment conferences in a university hospital. This limitation means that there is cause for some caution in interpreting the results.

Practical implications: The results are useful for understanding leadership in multidisciplinary teams within the health and medical care system. The reversible leadership means that doctors can more easily oscillate from difficult situations and deal with internal tensions, facilitating leadership and management of the multidisciplinary team in the intended direction.

Originality / value: Doctors in multidisciplinary psychiatric teams use reversible leadership.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord:

    Abstract [en]

Abstract Rationale, aims and objectives  In this article, ideal conceptions about teamwork are tested. The research question posed is: How are teams in psychiatry formed? Three theoretical concepts that distinguish groups from teams are presented: sequentiality, parallelism and synchronicity. The presumption is that groups cooperate sequentially and teams synchronously, while the parallel work mode is a transitional form between group and team. Methods  Three psychiatric outpatient teams at a university hospital specialist clinic were studied. Data were collected through 25 personal interviews and 82 hours of observations. The data collection was carried out over 18 months (2008–2009). Results  Results show: (1) that the three theoretical distinctions between group and team need to be supplemented with two intermediate forms, semiparallel and semisynchronous teamwork; and (2) that teamwork is not characterized by striving towards a synchronous ideal but instead is marked by an adaptive interaction between sequential, parallel and synchronous working modes. Conclusions  The article points to a new intermediate stage between group and team. This intermediate stage is called semiparallel teamwork. The study shows that practical teamwork is not characterized by a synchronous ideal, but rather is about how to adaptively find acceptable solutions to a series of practical problems. The study emphasizes the importance of the team varying between different working modes, so-called semisystematics.

Collaboration Exercises: the lack of collaborative benefits2014Ingår i: International Journal of Disaster Risk Science, ISSN 2095-0055, Vol. 5, nr 3, s. 192-205Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to study what professional emergency personnel learn during collaboration exercises and the benefits of what they have learned. Observations (n=19) and semistructured interviews (n=32) were carried out in conjunction with major exercises held in Sweden (2007–2012). The results show that exercises tend to be based on its own logic, which differs from actual events. Exercise participants believe that they mainly learn single-track, parallel and path-dependent behavior. The exercises do not facilitate the use of cross-boundary activities. This means that learning as well as benefits of the exercises for actual events is limited. The exercises would be more appropriate if those participating had the opportunity to identify weaknesses, try alternative ways as well as had the opportunity to have comprehensive organizational analyses at the conclusion of the exercises. Based on the results of the study, alternative models for the exercises are suggested that contain elements, which develop collaboration and contribute to learning.

Cultural camouflage: a critical study of how artefacts are camouflaged and mental health policy subverted2015Ingår i: International Journal of Health Planning and Management, ISSN 0749-6753, E-ISSN 1099-1751, Vol. 30, nr 2, s. 111-126Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study identifies hidden artefacts in a public organisation. In contrast to earlier studies, itfocuses on artefacts as concealing rather than conveying meaning. Negligent behaviour causedby an unpopular culture was recognised in five psychiatric wards at a Swedish universityhospital. Data comprising observations (87 h) and interviews (n = 60) were collected over aperiod of 48months (2008–2011). Four different items used in everyday work representing adeeper meaning of the organisation were identified during the observations. The items selectedwere work attire, nametags, keys and restraint beds. These were considered particularly promisingwhen it came to the aim of the study, namely, to find out how artefacts are camouflaged. Theobservations and the interviews revealed that these were controversial and contested artefacts inthe organisation. The study uses the term ‘cultural camouflage’ for behaviour that ignores andconsciously conceals symbols that have negative values. This concept contrasts with previousresearch that shows how artefacts are emphasised and how they contribute to the character ofthe activity in a transparent way. Conservative and backward-looking behaviour among staffprovided one explanation as to why artefacts were concealed. Another was the need to establishharmonious internal interactions.

From artefact to effect: the organising effects of artefacts on teams2010Ingår i: Journal of Health Organisation & Management, ISSN 1477-7266, E-ISSN 1758-7247, Vol. 24, nr 4, s. 412-427Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – Earlier studies have identified artefacts, but have only to a lesser degree looked at theireffects. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how artefacts contribute to organisation. Design/methodology/approach – A trauma team at a university hospital has been observed andits members interviewed. Findings – The trauma team showed itself to be rich on artefacts since it had strong internal drivingforces, high legitimacy, and tried to live up to high expectations from the outside. Its members were motivated to be in the forefront of trauma care. Through renewal, the team succeeded in maintaining demarcation. It also succeeded in systemising internal work tasks and made for itself a position in relation to the outside. The team's capacity, however, came to be limited by internal conflicts and battles for prestige. Practical implications – The study shows that informal logic has a strong influence on teams.Teamwork contributed to the development of organisational structure and motivation for the personnel. Originality/value – Earlier studies advocate the important role of artefacts in order to communicate, collaborate, negotiate or coordinate activities. The conclusion is that artefacts also have an organising and developing effect on teams in a fragmented and differentiated healthcare.

Learning and usefulness of collaboration exercises: A study of the three level collaboration (3LC) exercises between the police, ambulance and rescue services2015Ingår i: International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters, ISSN 0280-7270, Vol. 33, nr 3, s. 428-467Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, we studied collaboration exercises (3LC) between the rescue services, ambulance services, and police force, which were developed to enhance learning and usefulness. The exercises’ structure was based on identified deficiencies in previous collaboration exercises. The purpose was to test the exercise model in terms of learning and usefulness. Ten 3LC exercises were observed. A total of 65 semi-structured interviews were conducted (2011–2014) in connection with the exercises. The exercises contained across-boundary elements, seminars, and interactive documentation. The participants were given the opportunity to discuss, analyze, and critically reflect on their efforts. During the seminars, the individual actions were analyzed, which led to alternative strategies that were subsequently tested in a repeated exercise. Our results demonstrate that repetitive features and seminars during collaboration exercises promote learning toward an organic behavior and usefulness in the actual incident work.

Samverkan mellan blåljusorganisationer2011 (uppl. 1)Bok (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
