Media’s framing of the Terrorist Attack in Nice: A case study of how CNN and Al-Jazeera framed the involved actors in Nice.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

News media has a prominent role in people’s lives and acts as the first lens that communicates news from across the world. This Bachelor thesis aims to investigate the two news outlets CNN and Al-Jazeera and their respective framing of actors involved in the 2016 terrorist attack in Nice, France. Specifically, this thesis examines how CNN and Al-Jazeera frames civilians and the perpetrator as victims or non-victims. The theoretical chapter covers the framing theory by Robert Entman to work as a general foundation for the analysis. It also includes the ideal victim theory by Nils Christie, which is further developed in line with Joris van Wijk’s international conceptualization of the theory. The analytical framework is based on the ideal victim theory and will work to guide the analysis. The analysis finds that CNN and Al-Jazeera share similarities in terms of their framing of civilian victims, while AlJazeera spends more time with Muslim victims and providing their perspective. The framing of the perpetrator differs and CNN provides a more western versus non-western conflict where the perpetrator represents a non-western Islamic community, that cannot be victimized. Al-Jazeera accentuates the distinction between fundamentalists and ordinary Muslims. Regular Muslims in France are granted victimhood and framed as being caught between a western and non-western conflict.

Power sharing in Somalia: A qualitative research about the attitude of the somali federal government and member states workers towards the abolishment of the 4.5 formula2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Somalia has been in civil war since the demise of the Somali government in 1991. Somalia is a post-conflict country which strives for consolidating peace and stability. Clan- based politics has governed Somalia since the Transitional National Government (TNG) approved that the 4.5 formula is the only suitable power sharing mechanism for Somalis in order to reconstruct the country. This thesis analyses the attitude of the Somali federal government and member states workers towards the abolishment of the 4.5 formula. Power sharing and social exclusion theories with a qualitative thematic analysis will be applied to the thesis in order to depict and interpret the findings of the research. The research is exploratory research and interviewing the government workers at the federal and state level will be primary data ofthe research. A semi-structured interview method will be deployed in the research.

A Comparative Analysis of Primary Education Policies Under Centralised and Decentralised Governance: A study of Norway and Sweden2024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents a comparative policy analysis of primary education curricula in Norway and Sweden, focussing on how centralised and decentralised governance models shape educational policies by looking into the primary education curricula. Norway’s "Læreplanverket for Kunnskapsløftet 2020" (LK20) represents a centralised system, while Sweden’s "Läroplan 2022" (Lgr22) represents a decentralised system. By employing Descriptive Comparative Policy Analysis (DCPA), this study analyses curriculum structure, flexibility, learning outcomes, assessment guidelines, and values. The findings reveal that while Norway’s centralised governance ensures uniformity and equity all over the country, it may limit local innovation. On the other hand, Sweden’s decentralised model allows for greater local adaptation but risks regional disparities. This study aims to illuminate how governance models impact educational policy, contributing insights for policymakers on balancing national standards with local flexibility.

Heroes or Traitors?: A comparative study on how U.S. liberal and conservative leading news articles frame Julian Assange & Edward Snowden2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to compare how U.S. liberal and conservative media frames the whistleblowers Julian Assange and Edward Snowden. The questions we want to answer are, 1. What traits of heroes can be found in U.S. liberal and conservative media? 2. What traits of traitors can be found in U.S. liberal and conservative media? 3. Is there a difference between the U.S. liberal and conservative media’s representation of Assange and Snowden? In order to analyze the liberal and conservative media, the ontology of social constructivism and theories of framing, ideal types and political ideologies will be used. A qualitative comparative analysis will be conducted in order to find traits of our created ideal types, heroes and traitors in the liberal and conservative U.S. media. The analysis will show that there are great differences in how the newspapers frame the whistleblowers Assange and Snowden.

Framing of Syrian Refugees in Comparison to Ukrainian refugees: A Case Study of the Sweden Democrats Party Representatives2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the framing of the Ukrainian and Syrian refugees by the Sweden Democrats Party. Using the analytical framework based on theories of European identity and welfare chauvinism, the research investigates how party representatives frame the Ukrainian refugees compared to the Syrian refugees. The study employs qualitative content analysis to explore the discursive strategies used by the Sweden Democrats through the application of Bacchi's "What's the Problem Represented to be?" approach. Through a comparative design, the research identifies patterns in the party's framing of Ukrainian and Syrian refugees, providing an in-depth assessment of the issue. The findings reveal distinct differences in the party's approach towards refugees from two different regions. The Sweden Democrats emphasize a European identity and shared cultural background when discussing Ukrainian refugees, portraying them as deserving of assistance due to their proximity and commonality. The party's stance on refugee policy reflects welfare chauvinism, prioritizing the welfare of native-born Swedes over that of refugees and migrants from both regions: it is noteworthy that the Sweden Democrats' anti-immigration framing remains consistent regardless of the refugee group. The research highlights similarities between the framing of both refugee groups, such as concerns about resource shortages and declining public services. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of refugee challenges and the socio-political context in which they are situated

Labour Market Integration Policy and Long-Term Unemployment: A Case Study Western Sweden2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Despite Sweden's commendable performance in integration policies, as highlighted by the Migration Integration Policy Index (MIPEX) 2020 report, non-European born (NEB) individuals continue to face significant barriers to integrating into the labour market. This thesis presents these challenges, focusing on how labour market policy influences NEB long-term unemployed in Western Sweden integration, and the perceptions for street-level bureaucrats’ role and labour market conditions in impacting the integration process.Designed as a single-case study, this thesis delves into the local context in Western Sweden’s labour market integration for NEB long-term unemployed, providing a nuanced understanding of these issues. The findings suggest that labour market policies can have positive impacts, but their success depends on the consideration of local context. Future research with broader samples and diverse perspectives, including longitudinal studies, is essential to further illuminate these findings.

Advertisement Through the Male Gaze: A Qualitative Study on How Gendered Fashion Advertisement is Perceived2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor’s thesis examines the perception of gender stereotyped fashion advertisement according to two generational groups of women (>60 or <25) without university degrees. The study is comparative and derives from a problem definition which focuses on the (re)production of gender roles through advertisement which perpetuates unequal power structures. The study aims to describe the perception of the two groups through in-depth interviews with six women in total. Thus, the study uses a qualitative approach and has a twoparted theoretical framework. The selection of advertisements that are reviewed by the respondents originates from the Male Gaze theory and the Madonna/Whore Complex with indicators of nudity and position. Moreover, the interviewees’ responses are analyzed through the Madonna/Whore Complex, the Objectification Theory and the Theory of Generations. This thesis suggests that the categorization of women as Whores or Madonnas in advertisement is perceived to be true by both groups. It proposes a great generational difference, as that the younger generation women see the categorization of women as either Whores or Madonnas in the social world, while the older do not. Concluding, harmful beauty norms and feminine behavioral traits seem to be partly internalized

The Brexit event through the Eye of the British newspapers: A study of how the Daily Express and Daily Mail newspapers represented the immigration case during the Brexit event2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Media whether it is visible, audible or readable plays a substantial role when it comes to transferring news and events from all over the world and providing information to the public around the globe. Global news agencies and press representation of many issues, such as wars, conflicts and political dilemmas differ, depending of national origin or political leanings. The events leading up to the Brexit referendum, which took place in the United Kingdom on 23 June 2016, marked a turbulent political moment for the UK. One central issue at the center of this vote was immigration. Nevertheless, how the issues surrounding migration emerged in the news during this period, and especially how media can then be a place for the creation and reinforcement of political debate, have been understudied. To fill this gap, in this study I investigate how the right-wing represented EU and non-EU migrants in UK in light of the rise of populism across Europe. This study looks at two conservative British newspapers "tabloids": Daily Mail and Daily Express. Then with these incidents and two newspapers, this explores how images are rooted in political debate and become representative of it. I conclude that a negative portrayal and debate on migration is reflected in the right-leaning Daily Express and Daily Express. They both tried to create a less supportive and were more hostile debate regarding to migration policy and migrants in UK which helped spread populist thought among people. Furthermore, the thesis demonstrates that images are a crucial element in the development and strengthening of politized discourses.

Populist parties and the failure of the political elites: the rise of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ)2016Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The author analyses the reasons behind the electoral success of European right-wing populist parties. Using the Austrian Freedom Party under Jörg Haider as a case study and with a richness of primary material, he argues that their success is only partly caused by "racism". It is also, and more prominently, the result of populism – i.e. a critique of the "elite". These parties and their voters should not, then, be labelled as arrogant insiders attacking downtrodden outsiders like immigrants, workers, and minorities. Instead, the right-wingers are more justly portrayed as outsiders and underdogs, raising their anger and frustration against the insiders: the "media elite" and the "leftists and the artists".

    Why Do Right-Wing Populist Parties Prosper?: Twenty-One Suggestions to the Anti-Racist2019Inngår i: Society, ISSN 0147-2011, E-ISSN 1936-4725, Vol. 56, nr 1, s. 47-58Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this piece, Goran Adamson argues that the anti-racist rhetoric is naive and dangerously counter-productive. In theory, they refer to populist parties fueling on the anti-racist elite’s outcries. In practise, however, the anti-racists have forgotten all about it, and seem to believe that right-wing populism will vanish if only it is told off. Shocked, anti-racists say populist parties gain voters despite having certain views. But nobody votes on a party despite its view. True to leftist sensationalism, anti-racists always talk about fascism within right-wing populist parties, thereby overlooking a wide array of other causes for voter appeal. Prone to instant aggression, anti-racists react with fury to any populist provocation, thereby contributing to the meteoric rise of contemporary populism in the West. Instead of conducting a proper analysis, anti-racists say how can people vote on these parties and so on - much like an anti-racist bourgeoisie. Anti-racists, Goran Adamson claims, seem to think knowledge of right-wing populism is compromising, as if you would be tainted by it. In fact, it is the other way around. Criticism requires knowledge - and an ignorant anti-racist might, in the long run, have no power to resist the allure of right-wing populism. People vote on right-wing populist parties, anti-racists maintain, because these people fail to understand. But they claim they do, even though they have reached other conclusions. The responsibility of the financial and political classes for provoking popular reactions is minimized, while the distress among ordinary people is belittled or moralized. The political class ignores a central leftist principle: social behavior has often political/economic explanations. As a direct result of multiculturalism, the pet theory among anti-racists, society’s underprivileged groups - domestic workers and migrants - are in constant conflict instead of uniting against globalization and neoliberal deregulation. This is called divide and rule. In their quest for ideological purity, any anti-EU sentiment, anti-racists claim, is right-wing extreme, hence driving scores of voters into the arms of right-wing populism. These parties are further boosted by the fact that anti-racists sneer at family values and cultural traditionalism. Vocal victims of EU’s austerity measures are dismissed as right-wingers, further fueling political polarization. Popular and populist, anti-racists maintain, is basically the same thing. As a result, democracy becomes politically tainted, and the anti-racist elites are the only safe-guard against unaccountable elites. Right-wing populists never cease to talk about our roots, while multiculturalists never stop talking about roots overseas. Save for that geographic detail, they are two branches of the politicalromantic tree. Right-wing populist parties prosper, but not despite anti-racist efforts, Goran Adamson argues, but as a result of them.

Colonial discourse in development aid publications: A Comparative study of the UK and Sweden2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is performed as a comparative small-N study making use of post-colonial theory aiming to analyse whether, and if so how, Western government agencies working in the field of 'development assistance' reinforce colonial stereotypes by availing colonial discourse. Post-colonial and discourse theory are used to challenge colonial theory, allowing to break the binary opposition and power structures of the Self and the Other, opening a third space where hybrid identities can be acknowledged.

With Critical Discourse Analysis serving as a tool in the construction of a text analytical method applied to the documents published by the Swedish governmental development agency, Sida and the British Department for International Development (DFID) to examine whether and how they (re-)produce colonial discourse in their publications.

The monumental role of Britain in the colonisation of lands and people versus Sweden's comparatively small and short territorial possession of colonies, and especially how both nations relate differently to their colonial past represented in contemporary discourse, makes this paper an interesting comparative study. The research contributes to knowledge on how Western governmental development agencies sustain and/or contest remnants of colonial structures embedded and projected through discourse.

The main findings of this study are that both the DFID and Sida engage in and (re-)produce CD in their publications. However, to a certain extent they do differ, with Sida making use of non-CD to a significantly larger extent than the DFID.

Libyan Conflict in the eyes of Arab Media: A comparative study of how Al- Jazeera & Al- Arabiya news agencies represented the fighting groups in Libyan conflict and their claim to be the legitimate government2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The second civil war in Libya has been ongoing since 2014, where the two administrations, GNA and LNA, have been fighting each other for the power in Libya where many foreign powers including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, have been actively supporting different sides and their claim to legitimacy.

The aim of this research is to analyze how Al-Jazeera and Al- Arabiya, two state-controlled news agencies from Qatar and Saudi Arabia, represented the two fighting groups in the Libyan civil war and their claim to be the legitimate government. In this study, we use framing theory as the central theory to conduct our investigation. To answer our research question effectively, we have divided our frames into two further categories, behavior frame & representation (political) frame, which are used for our analysis.

Our research is a comparative case study as we have investigated the differences between AlArabiya and Al Jazeera's framing of the two fighting groups in the second Libyan civil war.

Our findings in this research indicated that both state operated news outlets framed the supported and opposite sides in different ways, which also reflected their respective countries' foreign policy agendas. Hence their state-controlled medias Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya and their representation of the two fighting groups and their claim to be the legitimate government in Libya were significantly different in terms of which actor is legitimate, but similar in terms of the tools/concepts they implemented to delegitimize the other side.

Den politiska visionen: Kunskapsdiskrepans i kommunal samhällsutveckling2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 poäng / 45 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The background to this study lies in a problem that was discovered during the research internship on which this compilation thesis is based on. Namely, a knowledge gap between the politicians and the civil servants in a municipality, this study has chosen to call it a knowledge discrepancy. Research and theory on the relationship between politicians and civil servants has shown that various problems and dilemmas arise between politicians and civil servants in both municipalities and other politically steered organisations. Therefore, it is important to point out that this knowledge discrepancy should not be seen as unique to a specific municipality, but rather to politically steered organisations in general. The purpose of this study is to investigate knowledge perspectives on municipal developmentin relation to an evidence-based policy perspective. To concretize the formulation of the problem, the study examines how civil servants view the municipality's political vision for sustainable local development. By interviewing civil servants who work with sustainable local development, the study analyses what the civil servants consider relevant and possible, in relation to the municipality's political vision. As a theoretical framework and perspective, the study uses an evidence-based policy perspective as a starting point to highlight different perspectives in relation to the political goals. Based on an evidence-based policy perspective, the results of the study can be divided into a discussion around three different categories, namely those of whether a goal is based on facts, knowledge and research, that there is a relevant need, and whether the goal is feasible. These three categories may also represent conflicts or dilemmas that may arise between politics and civil servants. This conflict can also be described as a discrepancy between politics and civil servants. What this study has concluded is that, in general, the goals have in most cases according to the civil servants been well supported by facts, knowledge and research. And there has been a relevant need for most of the goals, and they should be given high priority by the municipality. However, where discussion or a discrepancy often arose is about the feasibility of the goals. In this, there is a discrepancy between the political goal and the civil servant’s knowledge of feasibility, this could be considered a knowledge discrepancy regarding feasibility between civil servants and the political goals.

Media Framing of the Legitimacy of Nigerian Elections in Relation to Stomach Infrastructure2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The thesis aims to explore the media framing of Nigeria’s 2023 election in relation to votebuying: How did the Nigerian print media portray the legitimacy of the 2023 election in relation to vote-buying? In addressing the research question, Entman’s (1993) framing theory is used. For identifying the themes and patterns around the framing of the election Entman’s four questions, defining the problems, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments, and treatment recommendations, in connection with the existing literature on vote buying are employed. The thesis is a single-case study adopting a qualitative content analysis for analyzing 26 articles from Daily Post, Nigerian Tribune, Premium Times, PUNCH, The Cable, The Guardian, This Day, and Vanguard. The results indicated that the media, with the exception of two media outlets, overwhelmingly framed vote-buying as an illegitimate fraudulent electoral practicecaused by poverty and hunger. It is framed as detrimental to democratic governance and the media suggested predominantly enforcement measures such as election monitoring and criminal prosecution as possible remedies

Media and the Muslims: A thesis on media framing & priming in Argentina2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

All over the western world, media are giving Muslims the role as scapegoats for everything that is wrong with society. Through grave generalizations as well as alleged connections between Islam and terrorism, social categorizations are established in which Muslims become the ‘others’. Research has been made on a various amount of western nations, with the exception of a few, and this thesis explores how Argentinean media portray Islam and Muslims. With the use of quantitative and qualitative text analyses, the result will show the levels of priming and framing in relation to earlier research. By assuming social constructivism, a high frequency of these two ‘faces of power’ would affect societal relations, possibly creating a gap between an ‘us’ and ‘them’. Our findings suggest, however, this is not the case in Argentina; on the contrary, Argentinean media lack the frames which make Muslims ‘others’. This important discovery implies that the relationship between Islam and the West of today does not necessarily have to be one of two combatants, incapable of coexisting.

Donald Trump - The American Machiavelli?: A single case study of Trump’s political leadership in relation to the USMexican border wall2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The following bachelor’s thesis aims to examine Donald Trump’s political leadership style, and which leadership attributes he displays to gain follower support behind political policy propositions. Based on the leadership theories of Machiavellianism and charismatic leadership, the thesis more specifically examines: How Donald Trump, if at all, displays Machiavellian and charismatic leadership attributes in his political leadership. In particular, how are these attributes displayed when justifying his proposition of a US-Mexican border wall? The thesis builds upon a single case study and uses a qualitative content analysis in order to analyze the data. Through gathered speeches from the search tool “factba.se”, it has been observed that Trump’s leadership concerning the wall against the Mexican border display certain Machiavellian and charismatic leadership attributes. The results indicate that the most frequently displayed attributes in Trump’s political leadership regarding the wall is that he uses authoritarian and confident arguments to a higher extent than narcissistic and controversial arguments to justify his proposition of a US-Mexican border wall.

Personal Experiences of Somali Women in Uddevalla: A comparative case study on Somali women’s understandings of their experiences in the integration process2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In connection to an existing research project, Micro-migration and Integration with relevance for Uddevalla, this study aims to analyse and compare the subjective understandings of Somali women’s experiences in the integration process in the Swedish society. Integration is a multifaceted and ongoing process in which the self-understandings of this notion is bound to change over time in relation to socio-economic and cultural contexts. In light of this, the thesis employs a comparative case study that is based on data collected through focus group discussions with newly arrived women and women who have stayed in Sweden for a longer time. The analytical framework utilizes acculturation theory to study what traces of integration, assimilation, separation and marginalization can be identified in the selfunderstandings and how they develop over time. Some of the conclusions from the study by the interviewees notify language being crucial. Both groups understand that Swedish constitutes a step in the overall process for establishment and the newly arrived women showed an awareness about it being the ultimate factor that can speed up their own integration process. The findings of the research include that there is a deviation of the understandings between the groups when it comes to housing and identity. The group of newly arrived women with the exception of one participant, indicated a clear separation in regard to both aspects above whereas the women who have lived in Sweden for 9-10 years showed clear traces of integration. Hence, in the beginning of the integration process a person might have a theoretical understanding that indicates separation but experience a discursive shift towards the lens of integration.

New Public Management Vs Professionalism: A qualitative case study of the local political governance and its effect on the role and autonomy of teachers in the Swedish public compulsory schools2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The last three decades have been characterized with tremendous changes and reformations in the Swedish school policy as a result from the global trend of reorganizing the public sector. These reformations consisted of shifting the responsibility of managing the organization and financial distribution from the government to the local municipalities. However, with that fact, the Swedish educational sector has been experiencing a teacher shortage especially in the public compulsory schools at the local level. Which leads to the purpose of this study how local authorities are promoting teachers and their role.

The aim of this thesis is to study and analyze how the local political governance is designed (through local policies/regulations, financial management and auditing) is affecting the role and autonomy of teachers in the public compulsory schools in relation to the new public management and professionalism as management models. This is a qualitative descriptive case study where the municipality of Trollhättan and its local regulatory tools will be analyzed, and where potential conflicts that may arise between the two management models will be theoretically explained.

Finally, as the analysis shows, there are features of the disagreement between the new public management and professionalism (control and autonomy) in the design of the local political governance of the school policy and its effect on the role of teachers. It is also remarkable that the way of governance of the school policy by local authorities plays an important role in promoting the role of teachers.

New Course, New Discourse, New Racism?: Right-Wing Alternative Media in Sweden2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Like elsewhere in Europe, the tides of nationalist right-wing rhetoric in Sweden have become instrumental in generating a wave of anti-liberal and anti-immigration sentiments in politics and media. In particular, one branch of right-wing alternative media has become a breeding ground for normalizing such rhetoric. Does the anti-immigration stance in such media disguise racist inclinations? In this thesis we examine the discourse of three right-wing alternative media sites in Sweden to explore the possible employment of different types of racism in their articles. By taking the constructivist viewpoint and adopting the post-colonial conceptions of the 'Self' and the 'Other', racist discourse was analyzed and characterized as either biological or cultural. From these two theories, we derived concepts concerning descriptions of contemporary and ideal Swedish society that will be used as further indicators of racist discourses. In this single case study, 94 articles from Fria Tider, Nya Tider, and Samhällsnytt were analyzed on the topics of immigration, integration and crime through a qualitative content analysis. The results show that most of the articles contain cultural racist discourse.

Från Valsedelsystem till blockchain-baserade E-valsystem: En kvantitativ studie om väljarnas acceptans till digitalisering2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Democracy is built on consensus among the population through voting. Today we use paper ballot systems which require a centralized control with a reliable group to carry out the voting process, record and count the vote ballots. In recent years studies shown that the traditional system introduces a lot of possibilities of manipulation and corruption of votes. This thesis introduces an alternative approach to conduct voting. The approach is a e-voting system which uses the blockchain-technique. Blockchain provides several features that can protect against corruption and tampering with votes, and it brings a level of transparency that cannot be match by the traditional paper ballot system.

This study combines quantitative results from a questionary on voters' attitudes towards e-voting together with relevant research on blockchain-solutions and Swedish laws & procedures. The data which was collected was then transferred to Microsoft Excel where we created diagrams and tables and measured the frequency of the various questions.

The study reports voters' attitudes towards blockchain-based e-voting systems were positive. It turned out that most of the voters were not against change and those who did not know about blockchain were willing to learn to ensure a secure and reliable a democracy as possible. From the questionnaire survey, the voters replied that the properties that were important for an e-voting were data integrity and anonymity. From the survey data and proposals from previous studies, a proposal for a blockchain-enabled e-voting system was created. By using multiple blockchains, smart-contracts and with the help of an architecture in which voter-data is fragmented, the proposed system could increase the security around anonymity and data integrity in connection to voter data.

Who is the victim?: A descriptive single case study of the United Nations’ construction of the sex trafficking victim2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a descriptive single case study where the construction of the sex trafficking victims by the UN is analysed. More specifically, the study examines the construction of the actual victim and non-victim through the theoretical assumptions of masculinity and femininity. It asks 1) How does femininity and masculinity contribute to the construction of the actual victim by the UN? and 2) How does femininity and masculinity contribute to the construction of the non-victim by the UN? Making it possible to draw conclusions about the "ideal victim" of sex trafficking. Through the use of qualitative content analysis, we look at how the UN uses feminine and masculine assumptions in the construction of sex trafficking victim. The findings indicate that the UN uses more feminine assumption when describing the actual victim and masculine assumptions when describing the non-victim. Hence, supporting the construction of "ideal victim" being a woman. As the UN is a significant actor on the field of trafficking issue, the assumptions and ideas it spreads through its documents and media campaigns, has a significant affect to other actors in the field, IOs, IGOs, NGOs and governments, thus spreading the socially constructed gender stereotypes of the female victim and male predator.

Media Framing of Foreign Policy in U.S Elections: A comparative study between 2020 and 2024 U.S Primary Elections exploring Fox News & CNN’s framing of election issues2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The substantial but frequently overlooked influence of foreign policy on U.S. primary electionsis examined in this thesis, with a focus on the 2020 and 2024 primary election cycles. The framing of foreign policy in the 2020 and 2024 U.S primary elections draws attention to the ways in which international crises concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Gaza conflict, combined with media manipulation by CNN and Fox News, exacerbate political divisions between Democrats and Republicans. By applying framing theory and both quantitative and qualitative content analysis, the research shows that media outlets reinforce political viewpoints on the U.S.'s place in the world, and that foreign policy issues play a significant role in determining election results. The results demonstrate the profound influence of foreign policy on American political dynamics, challenging the notion that it plays a secondary role in electoral politics.

Political leaders in the face of a global crisis.: A comparative case study of Boris Johnson’s and Stefan Löfven’s framing of the second outbreak of COVID-192021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to identify and analyze the manner in which Prime Ministers Boris Johnson (UK) and Stefan Löfven (Sweden) frame the matter of the Covid outbreak in light of its second onset in 2020. By examining these two actors, we wish to contribute to the already existing literature on political leaders’ crisis rhetoric and to add content to the novel subject of pandemic rhetorics. By utilizing critical textual analysis and framing theory, this thesis identifies and examines themes and patterns of rhetorical structure surrounding the subject of Covid-19. The framing analysis is structured by three analytical points; problem definition, suggested causes and remedies, it will also be analyzed through the scope of integrative complexity theory. The three points will be assessed with measures that indicate in what manner the subject is framed; problem definition - positive or dire. Suggested causes - exogenous or endogenous. Remedies - restorative or reformative. The data for this study consists of 26 speeches made by the two political leaders, four from Löfven and 22 from Johnson. The results show that Stefan Löfven and Boris Johnson frame the outbreak through similar concepts, yet show difference in the variety and extent of integrative complexity; Löfven showing significantly higher levels through keeping a neutral and inclusive standpoint in the three variables, whereas Johnson maintains a more inclined approach with lower levels of integrative complexity by presenting less alternatives and variety in his framings.

Teachers’ experienced autonomy: A qualitative study of teachers’ autonomy in municipal and independent upper secondary schools2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to examine how teachers in municipal and independent upper secondary schools experience their horizontal and vertical autonomy to see if there are any similarities or differences between them. Describing their autonomy is done by applying a perception of teachers as street-level bureaucrats to gain a deeper understanding of the concept. In connection to the autonomy discussions, the theoretical understanding is provided in terms of horizontal and vertical influence that might affect autonomy. Those factors are reduced to three specific areas labelled as grading, teaching content and layout of teaching to examine our main research question: How do teachers in municipal and independent schools experience their vertical and horizontal autonomy? In order to answer our main research question, the following questions are specified, (1) how do teachers experience vertical and horizontal autonomy in the fields of grading, teaching content and layout of teaching? (2) what similarities or differences, if any, in respect to vertical and horizontal autonomy exist between teachers in municipal and independent schools? An interpretivist view forms the basis for this study and a qualitative approach is used to conduct a small-n comparison in order to answer those questions through semi-structured interviews. The result show that there is a relatively consistent view of vertical influence, where both the municipal and independent schools receive a high level of vertical autonomy. What is significant, however, is that due to loosely composed governing documents, there is rather a desire to reduce the vertical autonomy. In the horizontal respect, teachers in independent schools are more vulnerable, where guardians and students try to break into the vertical control and thus break the chain of command.

Sweden Democrats and Islamophobia: A qualitative study of how the Sweden Democrats construct Islam in their ideology2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to describe and examine how the Sweden Democrats construct Islam and if there are any Islamophobic elements in their ideology. We have chosen to examine the Sweden Democrats from the period before the election in 2009, when they entered the Swedish parliament in 2010 up until 2017. The Sweden democrats have developed the way the party construct Islam in their rhetoric from the period before the party got elected and the period after. We found it interesting to further look at the period when the party explicitly criticized Islam and when it became implicit. In this way we shed a light on how the Sweden Democrats might have used the creation of fear of Islam in order to gain voters. However, the problem in our question is although to see how they construct Islam and if there are any Islamophobic elements in their ideology. Based on the ontology of social constructivism and theories connected to Islamophobia, a qualitative analysis will be conducted to describe the Islamophobic elements that might exist within the party. We will present a further explanation of the concepts in the theory chapter and will also be used in the conduction of an analysis of the party's ideology. The three main areas of interests which are religious, cultural and political differences will be connected to the definitions of Islamophobia and will be analyzed separately. By doing so, it became clear that the party developed their way of expressing concerns of immigration and assimilation of Muslims in Sweden. Our results show that the Sweden Democrats are not Islamophobic regarding all our main areas. Rather, the party has only shown clear Islamophobic elements in the area of cultural differences and problems that occurs with immigration of Muslims during the time before the election. These types of messages are hard to find within the party today.

How can you be dark-skinned and beautiful?: A Qualitative study of how colorism and internalized racism is perceived by Somali women in Sweden2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the perceptions and understandings of Somali women in Sweden toward colorism and internalized racism in the context of Sweden’s Eurocentric beauty ideals. Using social constructivism, intersectionality theory, colorism, and internalized racism as the theoretical frameworks. The study employs a qualitative method with focus group interviews to explore the beauty habits and ideals of Somali women and how they attempt to conform to Eurocentric norms. This thesis finds that Somali women's beauty ideals are heavily influenced by Eurocentric beauty ideals as they dominate the media and beauty industries. The study also finds that it is difficult for Somali women to belong to Swedish beauty norms as whiteness is the dominating norm. Concluding, the study reveals that intra-racial colorism is prevalent and perpetuated within the Somali community, and that Somali women internalize racism as the unattainable Eurocentric beauty ideal of light skin leads to skin lightening practices and attempts at concealing one’s racial identity.

Distansledarskap: Är hybridledarskap framtiden i kommunal verksamhet?2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

State-Business Relationships in Green Transition: The Case of MedTech Companies in the Region of Västra Götaland, Sweden2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the intersection of State-Business Relationships (SBR) and the green transition, particularly focusing on the perspectives of MedTech companies in the Västra Götaland region, Sweden. It leans on the universal recognition of sustainability goals outlined in the UN Agenda 2030 and the social democratic perspective that emphasizes the importance of collaboration between the State and businesses to achieve these objectives. The transition to greener, more sustainable practices poses both challenges and opportunities for businesses, necessitating collaboration with governmental entities. The study identifies a gap in existing literature, highlighting a need to examine SBR from the perspective of businesses, especially concerning sustainability initiatives. To explore this gap, we construct an analytical framework consisting of three components: business perceptions of political leadership, coordination mechanisms, and transparency in SBR regarding the green transition. Methodologically, the study employs a case study approach and triangulates data from a focus group and semi-structured interviews with MedTech companies in the Västra Götaland Region. The findings suggest varying perceptions among companies regarding the effectiveness of political leadership, the extent of dialogue and coordination mechanisms, and the transparency of regulatory processes. Surprisingly, companies perceive a lack of political leadership from the State concerning green transition. Overall, the study underscores the importance of understanding businesses' perspectives in SBR to foster effective collaboration and drive sustainable development initiatives.

The process of implementing a new working method - a project towards change in a Swedish psychiatric clinic2014Inngår i: Journal of Hospital Administration, ISSN 1927-6990, E-ISSN 1927-7008, Vol. 3, nr 6, s. 174-189Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The implementation of evidence-based methods in hospital settings is difficult and complex. The aim of the present study was to highlight the implementation process concerning a new working method, i.e. a new assessment tool, based on the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF), among psychiatric nursing staff on five participating wards at a Swedish county hospital. Descriptive, qualitative data were collected through focus group interviews pre- and post-implementation. Data were analysed using directed content analysis, guided by Normalization Process Theory (NPT). The results revealed that just one of the five participating wards met the criteria for a successful implementation process. The results confirm previous studies showing the difficulty of implementation. Although participants agreed with the intention of the model, they were reluctant to apply it in practice. The implementation process seemed to be influenced by factors such as: time pressure; heavy workload; stress; lack of routines in using the tool; lack of nursing staff; as well as cultural characteristics and resistance to change.

A qualitative content study of Social Orientation course.: A small case study of the Somalis’ perception and opinions of the Social Orientation course.2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study is aimed to explore a qualitative study on participants’ experience of the Social Orientation course which is intended to facilitate the refugees that are new to Sweden in their integration, establishment in working and social life. According to UNHCR (2014) integration prepares refugees to adapt to their host societies without giving up their cultural identity. This study focuses on the newcomers’ experience and perception of the social orientation course Since they must participate in this course. Moreover, there has been little empirical research conducted on the participants’ experience in this subject area. the study will focus on two cities, Trollhättan and Falköping because of the availability of participants in these cities. In this regard, a qualitative case will be utilized, and data collection will be made by interviewing the participants. Furthermore, the theory which will be applied in this thesis is the acculturation theory to investigate how immigrants’ understandings and experiences reflect on the components or categories of the acculturation theory, integration, assimilation, and separation. The analysis and discussions presented in this study show that, due to a lack of educated instructors with pedagogical competencies, participants have experienced that they did not benefit anything from the course.

Tillitsbaserad styrmodell i praktiken: En kvalitativ studie av chefers upplevelser2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Managing boundaries at the accident scene: a qualitative study of collaboration exercises2014Inngår i: International Journal of Emergency Services, ISSN 2047-0894, E-ISSN 2047-0908, Vol. 3, nr 1, s. 77-94Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify what is practiced during collaboration exercises and possible facilitators for inter-organisational collaboration.

Design/methodology/approach Interviews with 23 participants from four exercises in Sweden were carried out during autumn 2011. Interview data were subjected to qualitative content analysis.

Findings Findings indicate that the exercises tend to focus on intra-organisational routines and skills, rather than developing collaboration capacities. What the participants practiced depended on roles and order of arrival at the exercise. Exercises contributed to practicing leadership roles, which was considered essential since crises are unpredictable and require inter-organisational decision-making.

Originality/value The results of this study indicate that the ability to identify boundary objects, such as injured/patients, was found to be important in order for collaboration to occur. Furthermore, lessons learned from exercises could benefit from inter-organisational evaluation. By introducing and reinforcing certain elements and distinct aims of the exercise, the proactive function of collaboration exercises can be clarified.

    Abstract [en]

Collaboration in emergency work is challenging on many levels. The unforeseen and temporary nature of incidents presents basic challenges. Another important challenge is boundaries between specialized and autonomous emergency service organizations. We need to know more about how exercises are performed to increase the individuals and organizations preparedness for future joint response work. The aim of this study was to explore how boundary work is carried out at the incident site during exercises, and how boundary awareness is developed based on this boundary work. The analytic focus was on how boundaries were identified, negotiated and managed in the participants work. Empirically, full-scale exercises involving police, ambulance and rescue services and with repetition of practical scenarios and joint-reflection seminars are studied. Much of the work in the exercises was performed within distinct areas of expertise, in accordance with concrete routines, skills and responsibilities. Boundary work was often organized in the form of distribution of labour or creating chains of actions. The exercises shed light on challenges related to other aspects of emergency response, such as a lack of resources, diverging primary responsibilities, time-criticality and hazardous environments. The design allowed participants to explicate boundaries, test and discuss alternative solutions, and to visualize the effects of different solutions as the scenarios were repeated. The boundaries that were identified were often of institutional character, and were also related to the specific scenarios and to the actions taken in the activities. By integrating real-life experiences of collaborative work in the exercise, the exercise gained a certain meaning that was essential for the participants to develop boundary awareness.

Language Wars in the Abortion Debate: A Comparative Analysis of Media Framings in the United States2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how the media in the United States frame the abortion issue in 2019 by studying specific language related to the two ideological positions of Pro-Choice and Pro-Life, and whether the framings reveal aspects of polarization. The theoretical approach consists of framing theory and assumptions based on feminism, both deriving from social constructivism. Drawing from these theoretical tools, the framework designed identified four themes, namely 'What is abortion?', 'What is the object of abortion?', 'Who is the right-bearer in the issue of abortion?', and 'Why is abortion morally right or wrong?'. This thesis constitutes a small-N comparative study where five ideological news sources, Huffington Post, Washington Post, USA Today, Washington Times, and New York Post, were sampled, examined and deductively coded with a content analysis, quantitatively when counting the assigned codes and qualitatively for a more in-depth analysis. The findings of this study show that the frame ProChoice is prioritized among the five news sources and the framings align with the liberalconservative scale in general. However, both ideological frames are consistently present and mixed between the news sources, although when used, the framing depends on the context of the language choices.

Argumentationens grunder i media: En argumentationsanalys om beviskraft, faktualitet och normativitet2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Democracy Spinning backwards?: A study of agency advocacy in Sweden2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to assess whether agency advocacy in newspapers debate articles has increased since the 1970’s and what forms agency advocacy take. This is done by investigating if the number or share of debate articles written by agencies increased from the 1970’s to the 2000’s, what types of communication approaches and subjects that are used over the years. The theoretical approach is based on research about new public management (NPM) and mediatisation through a normative institutionalist perspective. It is mainly a quantitative study where we collect debate articles from four different decades and code the content according to three ideal types: information, agency advocacy by promoting issue and agency advocacy by legitimating agency.  The thesis finds that the share and to some extent the number of debate articles has increased over the years, which supports the NPM theory and in part mediatisation theory. All ideal types are present; agency advocacy exists in all analysed debate articles while information is highly absent.  There is little change over the years which make it difficult to assess which theory that is supported.

Western Cinematic Representations of Sub-Saharan Post-Colonial Africa: An in-depth qualitative content analysis of Blood Diamond, Hotel Rwanda and The Last King of Scotland2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to analyze the representation of how the colonial past, in itself and in its consequences, is portrayed in Blood Diamond, Hotel Rwanda and The Last King of Scotland. All three movies are produced in Hollywood and they will be analyzed in an in-depth Small-N study. Our analytical framework is drawn from theories on how film creates meaning, postcolonial theory that includes concepts from Fanon, Said and Young, colonial patterns regarding Sub-Saharan Africa and finally Eurocentrism. Our three movies which serve as data, are analyzed with a qualitative content analysis through themes extracted from our theories in order for us to see how the colonial past is represented. Our findings show that in all three movies it was a representation of a colonial past portrayed in different ways regarding which theme that was being analyzed. The analysis further shows that the representation of the colonial past was seen as an underlying meaning, in the portrayal in the direct dialogues, or it was represented differently depending on whose perspective that was being told in all three movies. The intention of this thesis is to contribute to the field of Western representation of “the other” in movies and the representation of its colonial heritage.

The practical use of a theoretical concept: The usage of the ‘Global South’ concept in the academic journal, Theoria2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 poäng / 45 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This WIL thesis examines the development of the usage and application of the Global South concept in Theoria, a social and political theory journal originally based in South Africa. Using a mixed-method approach that combines textual content analysis of Theoria's published issues and semi-structured qualitative interviews with its editors, this study uncovers an increase in the frequency of the Global South concept usage in Theoria since 2014, indicating a shift compared to previous years. The Global South concept was initially conceptualized from a postcolonial perspective in Theoria’s publications but gradually shifted towards a critical social theory understanding of the Global South concept. Regarding how the Theoria editors understand the Global South concept, their perspectives are varied. They regard the concept as strategically employed as a way to profile Theoria to a wider audience. And the physical manifestations of the concept could be seen through Theoria’s desire to recruit contributors from the Global South. In conclusion, Theoria has strategically deployed the Global South concept to expand its reach and transform its operational practices. This thesis contributes, therefore, to the understanding of how academic journals strategically use theoretical concepts for profiling. This thesis also suggests that further research is needed to understand if there are potential predictors for how an academic journal will utilize a concept to profile itself.

Women in the Swedish Armed Forces: How does the Swedish Armed Forces promote women in order to attract them to their organisation?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The following Bachelor thesis is analysing how the Swedish armed forces promotes women in order to attract them to their organisation. Specifically it investigates (1) "How does the Swedish armed forces break the social norms of what it means to be a soldier?" (2) "How do they present a gender equal division of labour?" (3) "How do they try to affect women´s attitude towards the organisation?" This study investigates the Swedish armed forces, an organisation with a great underrepresentation of women. The underrepresentation of women is something that the Swedish armed forces openly tries to change through their marketing. This thesis is a single case study with both qualitative and quantitative approach, using Harding´s gender process theory in a descriptive design. By gathering television commercials from the Swedish armed forces user page on YouTube, I explore how the Swedish armed forces tries to minimize the underrepresentation of women. Their strategies are analysed by using Harding´s three gender processes. The results show that the organisation is active in all three processes, but focuses on breaking the social norms of what it means to be a soldier.

Kentucky Fried Elderly Care?: A longitudinal comparative case study of news media’s framing regarding the NPM reforms in Swedish elderly care before and after the Swedish Corona commission's interim report2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to investigate how Social-democratic and Moderate newspapers have framed New Public Management (NPM) during the covid-19 pandemic from 1st March 2020 and until 15th March 2021. More specifically the study intends to compare and describe how the NPM reforms in Swedish elderly care were framed in light of the high death rates during the covid-19 pandemic. The study is based on framing theory and analyses framing trends before and after the Swedish corona commission's interim report (SCCIR) stating that the NPM reforms was a cause of the high death rates within elderly care. To this end, the thesis contributes to the scholarship on media framing of NPM in Sweden in general, and specifically by investigating if the SCCIR was a critical juncture for how the Social-democratic and Moderate newspapers frame the NPM reforms. The study concluded the Social-democratic newspapers morally opposed the reforms and framed the reforms as the cause for the high death rates. And by doing so, holding the Social-democratic party (SAP) as partly accountable for the high death rates as they, together with the Moderate party, have been behind the implementations of the neo-liberal NPM reforms. The Moderate newspapers were morally in favour of the NPM reforms and instead framed the general spread of infection in society to be the cause, which they held the SAP government responsible for. All four newspapers matched their ideology over time, thus following their original ideological positions, which implies that the Social-democratic newspapers are impartial from the SAP. This concludes that the SCCIR was not a critical juncture for how the newspapers framed NPM.

Perceptions of integration: We came here to add more colour in a colourful society2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to see how asylum seeking refugees, between the ages of 18-25 years old, perceive their integration and to further investigate if the perception of integration differs within this group. More specifically this thesis asks two questions: (1) How do young asylum seeking men and women perceive the concept of integration in terms of mutuality and onesidedness? (2) Are there any similarities or differences within this group when it comes to their perceptions of integration? This thesis is designed as a qualitative case study with comparative elements and semi-structured interview questions. It consists of a combination of a theory of integration as a process within the economic, social and political spheres, and a theory of integration as a process based on mutual adjustment or one-sided adjustment relationships. From the analysis, it resulted that there are more differences than similarities among the asylum seeking refugees. Especially among men and women when it comes to the perception of integration, and more specifically within the economic and social sphere. Within the economic sphere, women strongly associate this with a one-sided relationship, while men tend to perceive that relationship within the social sphere. However, both women and men expressed the need for a mutual relationship within the political sphere due to the asylum process which lies in the hands of the society and not something that these women and men can decide on their own.

Think Global, Act Local: A Comparative Analysis of the Environmental Policies of Gävle and Trollhättan in 2009 and 2019.2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Climate change is an issue of huge social and academic interest. We approach it from the perspective of local government and its work toward environmental sustainability. The thesis is a comparative study where we examine the environmental policies between two Swedish cities, namely Gävle and Trollhättan, and investigate how these have changed in two specific time periods, 2009 and 2019. The time frame and the choice of cities are motivated by the drastic change in their environmental ranking placement. Through the lens of social constructivism and the theory of What's the Problem Represented to be, created by Carol Bacchi, we can analyse the cities' environmental policies critically. It gives us a comprehensive understanding of how a given policy issue is constructed as a problem. The chosen material for this study consists of formal documents issued by the two municipalities, which are analysed qualitatively. This study concludes that having a narrow and consistent definition of environmental sustainability over time has allowed Gävle to refine its environmental goals, hence the city can prioritize their environmental policies and become a leader in the ranking. While Trollhättan has changed their definition of environmental sustainability between the years 2009 and 2019 toward a multi-dimensional concept of sustainability, including social and economic sustainability. This alteration in policy formulation might be behind Trollhättan's drastic drop in the placement in the environmental ranking. The causal link, however, needs to be further confirmed in future studies.

The Impact of a Digital Regime on Academic Knowledge Production: Implications of learning and practicing knowledge production through a digital regime in Work-integrated Political Studies (WIPS) 2019-20212023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 poäng / 45 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This autoethnographic case study explores the experience of the digital regime on learning and knowledge production brought about by merging university study and research practice within a single digital regime in Work Integrated Political Studies (WIPS) during 2019-2021. The study provides a detailed account of the nature of learning and producing knowledge through this common digital regime, and its political implications. To explain the possibility and impacts of the digital regime, the study employed the concept of digital pharmakon by French philosopher Bernard Stiegler. In the analysis, I have operationalized the concept to the empirical materials I generated in the form of autoethnographic notes taken during the internship in the political science unit of University West, Trollhättan. Based on the analysis of these notes, the study postulates three features of the digital regime in learning knowledge production, which is: 1) to supplement human memory without memorization, 2) the provision of tools with various powerful technics, and 3) as a medium for communication and individuation. Additionally, the regime brought forthsome consequences for learning and practice, for instance, the dangers of forgetting, accelerating dependence on the computational memory and process, weakening thinking for oneself, and short-circuiting the process of individuation. The political implications would be eliminating diverse, negentropic, improbable, and incalculable parts of knowledge, so the knowledge left to be produced is based on computational reasoning, universal, data-driven, negotium, entropic nature of knowledge, lacking the local specialties, and subjective experiences
