''I Sverige har vi inte dukar på huvudet, de ska finnas på bord'': En kvalitativ studie om invandrarungdomars möte med rasism2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study, we examine the everyday experiences immigrant youths from two youth activities in the suburb have about racism. To do this, we focused on two main areas, first how everyday racism inherent in young people's lives, and secondly how they deal with their experiences of racism. To be able to examine their experience have we done a qualitative research approach used by semi-structured interviews on seven young immigrants from the suburb. Our meta-theoretical perspective has been social-constructionism, with post-colonialism as the main theoretical basis. According to this we use the concepts ''the Other'' and stereotyping, which are applied to the material. The material has been encoded, thematized, categorized and analyzed on the basis of the above theoretical perspectives.

Concluding remarks is that the racial story along with colonial values today characterize and affects the life of the young people living in the suburbs in a tangible way. This is mainly expressed through a perceived differentness and inequality between those who are racialized and those which are considered as the norm in society. That was depicted through two different forms, first through an experience of being categorized as '' the other '' and secondly by judged by stereotypes. These forms was actualized by the remains of the racial-doctrine, where the slave, and the animals were clearly visible, and also by a stereotyping by attributes like the beard, shawl, and the place suburb, which the result show that resulted in that young people is being regarded as eg suicide bombers, terrorists, and gangsters. Moreover, the results also show that the way to deal with racism was varied, but we have been able to categorize them in three main strategies: to try stay in safe areas, to stay away from racism in different ways (avoiding, removing, negotiating, adaptation), and to resist through group activities. Finally, we problemized and discusses how the immigrant youth experiences of racism directly or indirectly leads to social exclusion.

    Abstract [en]

The present study has the qualitative research with the output of systems theory aimed to identify the individual abuser path to addiction treatment. Three semi-structured interviews have been conducted and subsequently analyzed.

Addicts constitute a special category in the Social Services Act. In addition, it is to be found in the section of the law Chapter 3, 1 § (SFS 2001: 453) that the social outreach should make themselves familiar with the living conditions in the municipality. In addition, also provide information on social services in the municipality and through outreach activities and other means to promote conditions for good living conditions.

Results have demonstrated that it is primarily the abuser's family members who support them to contact applicants as current treatment. The study has also revealed that although the addict in the first place not turned to social services, but turned to other instances.

Respondents in the study all had individual agendas as applicable achieved abstinence. What, however, seemed significant among the participants has been a quest for better relationships with their family.

Another of the study's conclusions is that social services should expand its dissemination of information to local residents about drug treatment are available and how the aid is designed.

Att arbeta med oförenliga mål: En studie om vardagens etiska dilemman och målkonflikter på demensboenden, med särskilt fokus på äldreomsorgens nationella värdegrund2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our study was to describe, compare and analyze how representatives from different professions in high school look upon their experiences of the schools work with helping students with mental health issues as well as preventing mental illness among the students. In our study we chose to use a qualitative approach by conducting interviews since we wanted to receive views from the representatives from different professions regarding the high schools work with mental illness. We interviewed six people who represented different professions in school and they worked at two different high schools. In the research we used it appears that collaboration and discretion were significant components regarding the schools work with mental illness. In our study we find that the Student Health Care have a central role in the work with mental illness among the students, but other professional groups seem to have an important role as well. The different professional groups collaborates in the work with mental illness and how collaboration function appears to affect the discretion of the professionals in their work.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate how individuals with a combined substance abuse and housing problems describe their views on their addiction, their homes and the help they receive through the care of the community social service agencies. In light of the insufficient scien-tific evidence in the fields of substance abuse and housing support, the purpose of this paper is to gain increased knowledge in the both fields. An acquisition of increased knowledge is needed and important from a societal perspective as well as from an individual perspective.

The fact that the economic resources in society are put on actions that is utilized to increase the ability of the individual to recover from substance abuse and housing problems is of benefit to society, but above all it benefits the individual. The individual becomes an asset to society instead of a continued drain on community resources. Increased knowledge in the field can contribute to learning for those in the field, but also for others interested.

This concept is in line with Work Integrated Learning (= AIL). The study is based on eight interviews and the methodology and analysis are inspired by the phenomenological perspec-tive. The results shows that all interviewed informants find dependencies in the home as sup-port in the form of two aspects, partly as a relative support and partly as a daily support. The results further shows that the abuse, for many, resulted in isolation from family and non-addicted friends. Additionally, the home is seen as a basis for security and integrity.

    Abstract [sv]

Severity and justness do not moderate the relation between corporal punishment and negative child outcomes: A multicultural and longitudinal study2017In: International Journal of Behavioral Development, ISSN 0165-0254, E-ISSN 1464-0651, Vol. 41, no 4, p. 491-502Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There is strong evidence of a positive association between corporal punishment and negative child outcomes, but previous studies have suggested that the manner in which parents implement corporal punishment moderates the effects of its use. This study investigated whether severity and justness in the use of corporal punishment moderate the associations between frequency of corporal punishment and child externalizing and internalizing behaviors. This question was examined using a multicultural sample from eight countries and two waves of data collected one year apart. Interviews were conducted with 998 children aged 7–10 years, and their mothers and fathers, from China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Philippines, Thailand, and the United States. Mothers and fathers responded to questions on the frequency, severity, and justness of their use of corporal punishment; they also reported on the externalizing and internalizing behavior of their child. Children reported on their aggression. Multigroup path models revealed that across cultural groups, and as reported by mothers and fathers, there is a positive relation between the frequency of corporal punishment and externalizing child behaviors. Mother-reported severity and father-reported justness were associated with child-reported aggression. Neither severity nor justness moderated the relation between frequency of corporal punishment and child problem behavior. The null result suggests that more use of corporal punishment is harmful to children regardless of how it is implemented, but requires further substantiation as the study is unable to definitively conclude that there is no true interaction effect.

    Abstract [sv]

Reaching Out, Tuning in: On the Problematic Information Structure Hindering Connection between Socially Engaged Organizations and Refugees in the Municipality of Trollhättan2017In: Uddevalla Symposium 2017: Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Industrial Dynamics in Internationalized Regional Economies: Revised papers first presented at the 20th Uddevalla Symposium 15-17 June, 2017, Trollhättan, Sweden / [ed] Iréne Bernhard, Trollhättan: University West , 2017, p. 21-28Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The recent refugee crises have caused newcomers to settle in different municipalities in Sweden. Different municipalities respond differently to the situations that arise from an increased number of refugees waiting for decisions from the Swedish Migration Agency regarding residence permit. Such variation in response also affects how refugees can access relevant information about activities and initiatives available in the designated municipality while waiting. This study investigated how stakeholders' in the municipality of Trollhättan experienced their possibilities to spread information about their activities targeting refugees. A particular interest was on what kind of activities stakeholders provided, problems they face in reaching out to refugees, and opinions on using technology usage for outreach. Seven stakeholders in Trollhättan municipality were included in the study; a private company, the municipal employment office, a university and four nonprofit organizations. Findings suggest that stakeholders did arrange various types of initiatives but it was hard for refugees placed in Trollhättan to get access to these local initiatives. Stakeholders wanted to reach out to as many refugees as possible but they have a hard time doing so. The study concluded that information access of stakeholders activities is a major problem for refugees in Trollhättan. In order to address the dispersed and hard-to-find information from the varied stakeholders, a mobile app was suggested as a solution to the information problem in order to create a digital cental place for stakeholder initiatives and information spread. These initiatives, if known about, could create a more active and varied everyday life for refugees awaiting decisions from the migration board. For stakeholders to reach out with information of planned activities and for refugees to be able to tunein to these possibilities becomes particularly important in municipalities where refugees are dispersed in various kinds of locations, rather than living in largec amps.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The background to our research is a common interest in adolescent identity development. We have found no previous studies of how home solutions can contribute to a positive identity development so we considered it interesting to do such a study. The purpose of the research is based on a staff point of view to increase understanding of the meaning to the work with home solutions when it comes to taking advantage of and strengthen young people's positive identity processes. In order to answer this purpose, we have chosen to problematize questions about how identity formation takes place in their activities and how they with home solutions can strengthen these young people in a positive direction.

We have used a social constructionist point of view throughout this research. To collect our material we have done six individual qualitative interviews that have been analyzed and processed using a qualitative content analysis. Our results shows that the staff group describes identity as socially constructed with and by the individuals context. They also describe that home solutions can contribute to a stronger identity development through their work, their view of man and ways of being. Our interpretation and conclusion is that the staff considers their work with home solutions contributes to influence young people's identity development in a positive direction. Since our study has a staff point of view it would be interesting to do further research on a youth perspective.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate if the naturally occurring substance Ibogaine could be a good treatment for substance abuse. In order to answer this question, qualitative interviews have been performed with five persons who have been subject to Ibogain treatment and one psychologist/psychotherapist at an addiction treatment clinic, Lars Lundell.

In addition to these interviews an Ibogaine treatment clinic located in London has been visited. At the clinic an observational study of the treatment was carried out as well as interviews with the responsible physician Dr Brackenridge one of his patients, named Will in this paper. The perspective of this study is substance abuse treatment with Ibogaine based on the informants experiences and our own observations.

The interviews have been formed based on the following three questions:

    1. How is a treatment carried out?

    2. How have their lives been affected by the Ibogain treatment?

    3. What are the informant’s views on Ibogain treatment?

The analysis was made looking for similarities and dissimilarities in the informants answers, divided into the three previously described questions. This information was subsequently interpreted using literature, observations and our own thoughts.

The study shows that among the informants there is an almost unanimous opinion that without the Ibogaine treatment they would not be alive today.

The study clearly shows that the informants feel that they have a much better quality of life after the treatment. The conclusion of this study is that Ibogaine can be a successful treatment for substance abuse.

"Missbrukare är ju män, kvinnor gör inte det": En studie om bilden av den missbrukande kvinnan, samverkan och arbetsintegrerat lärande2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is based on a perspective of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) that is intertwined with different theoretical starting points and previous research. The theories used in this study are applied based on gender, power and learning perspectives.

The purpose of this study is to illuminate and analyze the treatment staff's image of the addictive woman. Employees' perception of collaboration with other actors and professions is also examined and noted on the basis of a Work Integrated Learning.

The method used in this study consists of focus group interviews, combined with a workshop in which Flanagan's (1954) Critical Incident Technique (CIT) method has become a forum for critical reflection based on an WIL perspective. The study has been methodologically completed with the respondents completing an evaluation. The purpose of the evaluation has been to investigate whether they think the study has been rewarding and instructive.

The results in this study show that there is a distinction between the sexes within which the man constitutes the norm. The image of the abusive woman shows that social workers are not always neutral but are influenced by social constructivist factors in which issues of gender and power are discussed. In relation to collaboration with other actors, a collaborative process is described that is characterized by several issues that significantly negatively affect the client group. The deficiencies described in the treatment staff and interpretative practices affect the own workgroup's cognitive jurisdiction negatively when other occupational groups take the cognitive control of the tasks.

The study's results also show that the focus group interviews and the workshop have become a forum for critical reflection in relation to the image of the abusive woman and the problems described in the collaborative process. Normative and forgiven performances have highlighted and all together contributed to a common knowledge development.

Young and working-class without work2016In: Nordic Youth Research Symposium: Youth Moves – Voices – Spaces – Subjectivities, Trollhättan: Högskolan Väst , 2016, p. 41-41Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses narratives from young unemployed working class men and women, living in a small Swedish town located outside the emerging economic regions. Like in many other European countries the rate of unemployment among youth is disproportionally high in Sweden. The empirical work the study is based on consists of a sample of in-depth interviews with men and women in the ages of 19-24, conducted during 2014. The main research question of the study is about how young unemployed people experience and reflect upon their own situation. Industrial societies have turned post-industrialand this is reflected in the social structure of the communities that for decades used to be dominated by industries and smaller factories. The labor market has undergone major structural changes during the last four decades. Since the cultural and social identity of the working class traditionally has been closely connected to an intergenerational continuity where foundational elements are defined by work and a belonging to the local community, the situation of unemployment means that the identities as well as the community are forced to be reimagined. The narratives from the young men and women in our study can be seen to reflect social and cultural changes that have taken place on a structural level concerning the labor market, the education system and alsothe changed conditions for the formation of social identities. We make use of Margaret Archers concepts contextual discontinuity and contextual incongruity in understanding and discussing these tendencies.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to try to identify what young women see as typically female and how this affects them as individuals, focusing on the female body. How free or limited do they consider themselves to respond to prevailing ideals of beauty, to men and other women. Our questions are how young women construct femininity through the body and why? We do this by using a holistic gender perspective and with the help of key theoretical concepts; gender, normative femininity, heteronormativity, performance, freedom/power and the female body,. We have had a qualitative approach and we have done interviews with six girls in secondary school age. The material is processed and analyzed on the basis of the IPA model, which aims to build themes from the interviews. The themes we have stressed in the study are: Female with large F, To find balance, I want to be unique... (but in the right way), Get a good boyfriend and learn to socialize with girls, To be something for everyone and desire after impossibility and the road ahead. By letting our informant´s voices be made visible in our analysis, we have been able to answer the question of how they experience their own construction of femininity. What becomes visible in the analysis is the great knowledge and awareness which are among the girls on this subject. This shows the complexity that exists around young women today. More conclusions that can be drawn is that whichever way the woman construct her femininity gives different degrees of social status. Lack of freedom is not about the limited possibilities for action it is rather the impact the effectiveness of the choices made and the awareness of those who provide the experience of not being free.

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study designed to investigate how professional support group leaders talk about their role as supervisor of support groups for children and adolescents with problematic home situations. We also examine how these supervisors talk about the method they use and how they talk about the individual child. We have chosen critical discourse analysis to help us explore if there are different ways to talk about these territories. Our questions are:

    • How does the support group leader talk about his role?
    • How does the support group leader talk about the method?
    • How does the support group leader talk about the individual child?

The theories we have chosen to use in the analysis of our material is Aaron Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence and social constructivism. We have, as mentioned, chosen to do a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews conducted with seven active support group leaders at three different support group organizations. We transcribed the interviews and coded them separately and then went through the coded material together. The analytical method we have chosen is discourse analysis focusing on Norman Fairclough´s critical discourse analysis. Along with Fairclough´s three-dimensional model, we analyzed the interviews at the following levels: text practice, discursive practice and social practice. Based on our purpose and our questions we managed to distinguish six different discourses, within each territory we found two discourses that stood in contrast to each other. In the territory "How the support group leader talks about his own role," we found the knowledge discourse and the playful discourse. In the territory "How the support group leader talks about the method" we were able to discern a discourse view of the method as complete and a view of the method as adaptable. In the territory "How the support group leader talks about the individual child" we found the discourse about the perception of the child as a subject and the perception of the child as an object. These discourses were put together to constitute two discourse chains which showed two different orientations of the support group leader. We then analyzed these discourse chains our theories and questioned them based on how the two different types of leader’s we located could affect the method’s design and the children participating in support groups. The study concludes with a part in which we compare our results with earlier research within this field followed by suggestions for further research.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of our study was to get to know the conditions for detecting and working with pupils who live with honour related violence and oppression in a secondary school in Sweden. More specific we were interested in the perspective of school staff, which we collected with semistructured interviews in a small Swedish municipality. Our study was conducted partly in cooperation with the municipality where the school was located. In order to gain a deeper understanding of our object of study, the conditions for detection of and working with pupils that live with honour related violence and oppression expressed by school staff. We used psychological and physical tools, and the zone of proximal development from a culturalhistorical psychology as scientific concepts. These concepts also helped us to present our findings in a more effective way. Our findings pointed to three areas of contact where different professions could detect, get connected and start a relationship with a pupil who might live with honour related violence and oppression. These three areas were identified as each having some different opportunities and conditions regarding the possibility to detect and successively work with this group of pupils. Our findings also point to the need for education about honour related problems for school staff, especially the teachers who were noted to be a group in need of knowledge regarding these issues. One important condition in working with pupils living with honour related violence and oppression was the need for clear rolls of responsibility and knowing who to contact in certain situations.

    Abstract [en]

In this study we have examined in which way the horse is used in Equine Assisted Therapy, and what effects the treatment staff experience and describes that the interaction with horses has on girls who self-harms. Our Empirical data was collected through qualitative methods such as interviews, participant observation and informal interviews with a total of six different informants, from five different activities with Equine Assisted Therapy for girls who self-harms. In the analysis we have assumed symbolic interactionism, a theory focusing on the human as a social being, where the self-image alters in the social interaction with other human beings. We interwove this theory with the Biophilia hypothesis, an explanatory model concerning human’s relationship to animals and nature.

The conclusions we have found in the results are:

    • Equine Assisted Therapy is a complementary treatment comprises both horseback riding and exercises which is not based on the horseback
    • Equine Assisted Therapy almost always involves three parts, the therapist, the client and the horse. The therapist constantly interpreters the horse to get information about the clients senses tuning.
    • The horse can be especially useful for sexual abused girls. It can be used as a help for the client in relaxation exercises, and can be a help for the client in body awareness recovery.
    • Equine Assisted Therapy contributes to increased self-confidence, self-esteem and altered self-image
    • The horse has not the ability to lie, which results in a completely honest relationship between the horse and the human.
    • Both the ambient environment and just interacting with the horse can be calming and anxiolytic for the client.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to describe how experince-based knowledge can be made visible by giving some examples of how this has been done in Swedish social welfare services, in collaborations between social services agencies and research and development (R&D) units. These examples will be linked to theories and discussed in relation to different research utilisation models. By using one of these models, it is argued that R&D activities can broaden the concept of evidence-based practice and help brigde the gap between research and practice.

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose with our study is to examine and analyze how staff in home care services perceive their work situation as well as in what way relations with colleagues or clients may have an impact on this experience. We have chosen a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews, which builds on the experience of the interviewed individuals. Our main perspective in this study is the social pedagogy. The theoretical frame consists of social networks and the concepts community and thin networks. The collected data has been coded, categorized, thematised and analyzed in relation to former research and the theoretical perspectives. Our study results indicates that the personnel in home care services feels that they have a good and rewarding work. The contact with the users is experienced as very positive and as the main reason for them to go to work. The personnel also describe the working group as very important and it is to the colleagues they turn to get support. The result of this study clearly shows that relations are of great importance for the individuals understanding of their work situation.

Människa i första hand: En etnografisk studie av en mötesplats för socialt utsatta, med fokus på besökarnas upplevelser av bemötande och inklusion2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The social media center is a platform where most of the young people are online a considerable time of their freetime. The new arena to socialize has many advantages, such as containing and exploring the social life. At the same time there are benefits with the huge activity on the internet. There are also plenty of risks such as sleep disorders, internet addiction and internet violations. The purpose of the study is to examine the youth's perception of what kind of violations there are on the social media center and how they may be prevented and inhibited.

The study has a qualitative approach where our results and analysis are based on three semistructured life-world interviews in form of focus groups. The young people of the study attend a secondary school in a smaller town in southern Sweden and are anonymous in the study. We have used the symbolic interactionism as a theoretical reference framework, where the "definition of the situation", "social interaction", "symbols" and "emphasis on activity" are our theoretical concepts.

The results of our study show that offensive images and offensive comments about the sexual orientation, political opinion and appearance are the most common violations of social media. It has been shown to be a hard climate on social media and that violations can be seen openly, especially in social media where users can be anonymous. The young participants of the study believe that one of several ways to prevent these violations are through better understanding and continuous discussion among adults and teenagers.

Chefers strategier för att implementera samverkan2016Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Living with an Intellectual disability entails difficulty understanding as well as learning things, and may vary depending on whether the intellectual disability is considerable, moderate or mild. Within the earlier mentioned categories, it is most common that people with mild intellectual disability have children. Intellectual disability can involve difficulties concerning social and practical skills as well as reduced intelligence. To cope with being a parent there are several skills that must be mastered, such as emotional, social and intellectual competence, a considerable challenge for parents with intellectual disabilities.

This study aims to describe the activities, the role and affect family support workers has on parents with intellectual disabilities.

The empirical material has been collected through qualitative semi-structured interviews with five family support workers, who in their profession come in contact with parents that have intellectual disabilities. The interviews has carefully been transcribed word for word and analyzed using the method of qualitative content analysis.

The results show that the comprehensive theme of the study is the fact that family support workers use themselves as tools by assuming different roles in their work; here named the learning, the inventive and the authoritative. Each role plays an important part in the parents learning experience, and the family support worker alternates between the roles to suit specific needs. They work in a pedagogic, individual and precise manner in an effort to support and promote parental skills. The family support worker believes in the parent’s ability of becoming a sufficient parent, providing adequate conditions. It can be difficult for the family support worker to relate to the needs of the child and the parent as well as the parents civil rights, society and social efforts. The family support workers and the municipal activities they represent have clearly implied that working towards increasing parental abilities, in parents with intellectual disabilities, deals with developing skills in order to master everyday life

    Abstract [sv]

Constructions of Unaccompanied Children: A study on how concepts of Unaccompanied children become credible on an online forum2016In: Nordic Youth Research Symposium: Youth Moves – Voices – Spaces – Subjectivities, Trollhättan: Högskolan Väst , 2016, p. 136-136Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Constructions of unaccompanied children have been researched to some extent. Concepts of the children have been studied in media and policy documents amongst others. How the children are constructed within an "everyday context", in form of an open online discussion forum and how the constructions become credible, are regarded as under-researched. Aim: The aim of the present study was to identify different discourses concerning unaccompanied children on the Flashback Forum, with regard to their rhetorical organization. Discourse is meant as a way to talk about and understand the world that constructs an object or phenomenon in a particular way. Method: To answer the aim, a discursive psychological approach was used, which focuses on how credibility and truth are created in communication. Based on a theoretical model, including the four rhetorical techniques category entitlement, empirical repertoire, consensus and extreme case formulations, it was examined how the writers at the forum created truth and responded to others' beliefs about the children. Result: The results showed that unaccompanied children are surrounded by the discourses: the adults, the children, the rapists, the special treated, the sexually vulnerable and the discourse of the biological male sex. Discourses were used in parallel in the speeches and to back up arguments at the forum. The writers used the studied rhetorical techniques to build credibility in the statements. With specific expression, facts about unaccompanied children were created.

Drama as a trans-structural catalyst in a global-local and formal -informal rhizome of ESD agents.2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Drama as a trans-structural catalyst in a global-local and formal -informal rhizome of ESD agents.

In the center of the stage stands a collaborative theatre co –production facing sustainability with stakeholders from five continents. The project sets out to investigate a number of questions; How and if can Drama serve to enhance ESD learning with an emphasis on emerging processes in a trans-structural setting? What effect can an embodied learning that also includes a visit to the as- if –imaginary domains have on a intercultural ESD discussion? As Drama means doing - acting as well as reflecting there is a potential for a critical reflexivity, how can that be investigated? What are the ethical implications involved in the usage of such transformative tools? These are a few off all the questions that has triggered my interest in using Drama whilst working with ESD in an intercultural and network-based learning context. Findings from a pilot case study will be presented and I look forward to the possibility of enhancing the discussion within this distinguished crowd.

Mellan SoL och LVM: en kvalitativ studie om dilemman i arbetet med tvångslagstiftning2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Mind the gap: transition to adulthood – youths' with disabilities and their caregivers' perspectives2016Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Transition to adulthood, referring to the process of moving from childhood to adulthood, can be a complex period for youths with disabilities who might need special support transitioning into an independent life as adults. Caregivers are significant persons for the youths, which is why their own health and wellbeing is important. Therefore the overall aim of this thesis was to gain a deeper understanding of health and wellbeing, challenges, preferences and needs during the transition from childhood to adulthood in youths with disabilities and their caregivers. The thesis is comprised of two studies, study A focusing on the perspectives of youths with CP (Paper I) and of their caregivers (Paper II) and Study B focusing on the perspectives of immigrant youths with disabilities and caregivers from Middle Eastern countries residing in Sweden (Paper III and IV). Study A had a qualitative approach and involved focus groups and individual interviews with 12 male and female youths, 17-18 years of age, with CP and various physical and cognitive levels of disabilities (Paper I), as well as 15 mothers and fathers (Paper II). The interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis. In Study B, a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Based on structured and semi-structured questionnaires in combination with open ended questions interviews were conducted in Swedish or Arabic with 17 male and female youths, 13-24 years of age with various disabilities and 10 mothers, five fathers and one sibling. The families were all immigrants with Middle Eastern origin and most of them had lived in Sweden for more than five years. The questionnaires Family Need Survey (FNS), Rotterdam Transition Profile (RTP) and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) were all translated and adapted to Swedish except for COPM where there already was a Swedish version. The results were analysed using mainly descriptive statistics and based on the framework of International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health – Children & Youth Version (ICF-CY). The findings from study A showed that the experiences of youths and caregivers mostly concerned mental health and wellbeing described as both positive and negative experiences. Their family life was experienced as important, secure and convenient, which made the youths feel safe and gave parents a sense of meaningfulness. Youths described participation, socialising and love as being important, but also challenging and worrying. Caregivers experienced sorrow and anger and together with demanding logistics, planning and worrying, their health was affected negatively during their children's transition to adulthood. The findings from study B showed that youths were dependent on their caregivers for transportations, participating in leisure activities and socialising with friends. They were also dependent on their caregivers for the demanding of support and health care. The youths had few or no experiences of intimate relationships but felt that they were expected to get married in the future which worried them and their caregivers. Caregivers were uncomfortable with using the term intellectual disability. Caregivers needed help to understand their child's condition and to explain the child's condition to their wives/husbands. A significant difference was found in what problems youths identified with and what their caregivers identified as their youth's problems. The youths experienced problems with handling finances, transportations and seeking employment or daily activities whilst their caregiver thought their youth's primary problems involved self-care. The overall finding showed that to strengthen health and wellbeing in youths with disabilities and their caregivers and to meet challenges, preferences and needs during transition from childhood to adulthood both youths and caregivers need information and support. Both youths and caregivers expressed a desire for individualised support given by one person who could facilitate the transition period by coordinating information and give support based on individual preferences and needs. During the recruiting process in both studies, great challenges were experienced in finding participants. Collaboration with professionals in schools and leisure activities was found to be the most effective way to get in contact with immigrant youths and thereby also their caregivers. The findings from this thesis may enable professionals to develop and improve best practice guidelines for support, habilitation and health care in youths' transition. To facilitate for the youth to transfer from services with a family-centred approach to person-centred adult services, their autonomy must be strengthened by involving them in their own transition planning early on. Immigrant youths need special information and support about love and the freedom of choice to get married. The COPM and RTP are suggested to be used as tools in person-centred transition planning given they are used customized and applied with cultural sensibility. To enable those with communication limitations to give their independent voice the use of communication tools is necessary. Furthermore, the transition to person-centred adult support and health care should be flexible and not determined by biological age. However, youths need support by their caregivers who in turn might both need, and want, support for themselves and occasionally hands-on support. Guidance by a specially designated navigator aimed to support the whole family would be an option to meet individual needs. The information and support should be culturally sensitive with respect to various linguistic and cultural experiences. To close the gaps between systems of care collaboration was discussed to be necessary to facilitate the transition between support and health care for children and youths as well as services for adults. The use of ICF-CY as a framework for understanding needs and the standardised terminology in ICF-CY in documentation can facilitate this collaboration.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate preschool teacher’s views of participation in preschool. We examined how adults' power can affect children's participation in preschool. Media produces sometimes children's increased power and empowerment as something negative. We wanted to see how children's participation can be perceived by preschool teachers and the situations in which participation can be seen at the preschool and we have assumed a qualitative approach in which we used interviews to take part in pre-school teachers' experiences. In this study, we use Steven Lukes (2008) power theori and Harry Shiers (2001) ladder of participation and used it to examine how preschool teachers are working to achieve participation in preschool and if any power aspects can affect children's influence.

In the result we present how preschool fosters participation based on the needs of the ladder as Shier highlights, and discusses the pros and cons of participation in preschool. The preschool curriculum states that children in preschool should be given the opportunity to influence their situation at the preschool and participate in various forms of collaboration and decision making. The result is also coupled to Steven Lukes theory of power and the different dimensions.

The result shows that preschool teachers see participation as something positive. However, they were all agreed that too much involvement is not good for children as it creates anxiety and disorientation. Both previous research and our informants believe that children thrive on structure and clear rules. To give children too many choices does not fit all and we can therefore see that it is difficult to give children full participation. We can from our results see that that the preschool teachers work daily to make the children involved but some educators argue that large groups of children and lack of staff restricts the possibilities. The view of participation differs among different teachers, but the key word for creating participation according to the educators has been to listen to the children

Risks and music - Patterns among young women and men in Sweden2011In: Noise & Health, ISSN 1463-1741, E-ISSN 1998-4030, Vol. 13, no 53, p. 310-319Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Music and high levels of sound have not traditionally been associated with risk-taking behaviors. Loud music may intensify and bring more power and meaning to the musical experience, but it can at the same time be harmful to hearing. The present study aims to increase the knowledge about young women′s and men′s risk judgement and behaviour by investigating patterns in adolescent risk activities among 310 adolescents aged 15-20 (143 women; 167 men). The Australian instrument ARQ was used with additional questions on hearing risks and a factor analysis was conducted. The main results showed that the factor structure in the judgement and behavior scale for Swedish adolescents was rather different from the factor structure in the Australian sample. Also, the factor structure was not similar to the Australian sample split on gender. The results are discussed from a gender- and existential perspective on risk taking, and it is emphasized that research on risk behavior needs to reconceptualize stereotypical ideas about gender and the existential period in adolescence.

    Abstract [en]

This report is about the ways in which children in families with previous economic stability experience and adapt to substantially decreased household income as a consequence of a parent's/parents' unemployment. While much is known about children growing up in poor families, and how they understand and act in relation to the family's economic situation, little is known about children who suddenly find themselves living in economic adversity. In the context of post-financial crisis Sweden where in the late 2000s/early 2010s large numbers of families with previously stable incomes found themselves in economic adversity, the objective of the research is to investigate how children and young people experience substantial decreases in household income as a consequence of parental unemployment. In particular focus is directed to the ways in which they reason about and respond to the family's new economic circumstances. Interviews with children (N=45) whose parents had previously been in long-term employment but lost their jobs were carried out. Drawing on national data provided by the National Transition Fund for Blue-collar Workers (TSL) and (ii) the Local Transition fund for white-collar staff in the private sector (TRS), five municipalities in the west of Sweden with the highest numbers of transition grants were initially identified for recruitment of families subjected to unemployment during the years of 2010-2013.The interview data was analysed using thematic content analysis (Broun & Clark2006) with focus directed to children's agency (Kuczinski 2003). While the results are largely in line with previous research on children living in long-termpoor families, that is to say that parents put children´s needs first, children take responsibility for the family situation by not financial demands on the parentsone major difference emerged. None of the types of self-excluding behavior characteristic of avoidance-oriented strategies was found. Unlike children living in poverty where self-exclusion and the avoidance of exposure to stigmatizing situations where resource disparities are highlighted are common, the children in the current study did not regard parental unemployment and the family's loss of income as a source of shame. Rather, they expressed awareness of how macroeconomic forces had impacted on their lives and, as active agents, developedstrategies that enabled them to adjust to the family's new economic reality. The implications of this result indicate that social workers working with children insuch situations need to reconsider interpretations of behavior that are rooted inthe assumption that economic adversity generates shame and stigma.

    Children's agency in interprofessional collaboration2015In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, Vol. 5, no 1, p. 50-66Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There is currently little research into social welfare interventions where children's agency has been in focus and, in particular, a lack of research on children's experiences and perceptions of interprofessional collaboration. Findings from studies that have looked at children's perceptions of opportunities to influence the support they receive have tended to show how they lack power and influence. Drawing on Kuczynski, Harach, and Bernardini's (1999) three principles for investigating and understanding children's agency, the purpose of this study is, in a Swedish context, to explore children's perceptions of their agentic capacity to influence who works with them when many different professionals are involved in providing support. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 28 children in receipt of support in the form of either home-based interventions, foster or institutional care. The results revealed that, for the older children, perceptions of the exercise of agency involved both the exclusion of certain professionals from the collaborating group as well as the identification of those perceived as being able to help. Additionally, the children's agency could be seen to be implicated in their perceptions of actively making decisions to acquiesce in collaborative solutions. For the younger children, agency was revealed in the way that they interpreted the situations involving collaborating professionals, recognising that it is primarily parents who decide about contact with different 'helpers'. The study provides important insights from the child's perspective into the ways in which, through their agency, children are active in defining and re-defining their own 'organisational chart' of collaboration. Limitations are discussed and proposals for future research are made.

Children's agency in interprofessional collaborative meetings in child welfare work2016In: Child & Family Social Work, ISSN 1356-7500, E-ISSN 1365-2206, Vol. 21, no 4, p. 502-511Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The concept of children's agency can be used to understand how children actively shape their lives. While in social work there is a growing body of research on how children experience meetings that involve collaborating professionals, little is known about the ways in which they exert an influence. The purpose of the study is, in a Swedish context, to investigate children's perceptions of their agentic capacity in regulating participation and exerting an influence on outcomes in interprofessional collaborative meetings. Interviews were carried out with 28 children in receipt of social services support. Findings revealed that children perceive professionals' talk as restricting opportunities for input. They also perceive that they have the capacity to exercise agency by (i) conforming to expectations by feigning boredom and seeming disengaged, but at the same time paying close attention; (ii) by using exit strategies; and (iii) by developing 'in-situ' strategies to end meetings. Rather than, as previously suggested, being powerless in such circumstances, the children tell how they carefully assess situations, and, from a position of apparent subordination, talk of ways of acting that reveal their agentic capacity. These insights are of importance for practitioners who are encouraged to look beyond behaviours that first meet the eye.
