Personality and adherence to medication treatment2011Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Striving for improved adherence to medication treatment is of vital concern, as low adherence is a major obstacle in treating many prevalent chronic diseases. Several factors have been identified that seem to influence adherence behaviour, but limited research exists on the significance of personality for adherence to medication treatment. According to the Five-Factor Model (FFM), personality can be described in terms of five broad personality traits: Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Openness to experience, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. Reports on health-related quality of life (HRQL), asthma control and selfefficacy may also be influenced by personality. Therefore, the overall aim of the present research project was to explore the significance of personality traits in relation to adherence to medication treatment and asthma control, health-related quality of life and self-efficacy.

Recent educational interventions for improvement of asthma medication adherence.2012Ingår i: Asia Pacific allergy, ISSN 2233-8276, Vol. 2, nr 1, s. 67-75Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Poor adherence to asthma medication treatment is a dilemma as it decreases the chance of achieving and maintaining a proper asthma control. Another dilemma is that there seems to be a small range of functional interventions that enhance adherence to long-term medication treatments. The aim was to review the last five years of published educational interventions for improving adherence to asthma medication. Through systematic database searches 20 articles were identified, which matched the inclusion criteria and described educational interventions to improve asthma self-management including adherence. The current review showed that addressing unintentional non-adherence in terms of incorrect inhaler technique by recurrent education improved the technique among many patients, but not among all. Phoning patients, as a means to remove medication beliefs as adherence barriers, seemed to be an effective educational strategy, shown as increased adherence. Involving patients in treatment decisions and individualising or tailoring educational support also seemed to have favourable effect on adherence. To conclude, addressing specific adherence barriers such as poor inhaler technique or medication beliefs could favour adherence. To change adherence behavior, the current review proposes that educational adherence support should be a collaborative effort between the patient and the health-care professional based on each individual patient's needs and patient factors, including elements such as personality traits.

Att leva med kroniskt obstruktiv lungsjukdom: en litteraturstudie2022Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (yrkesexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a global problem with about 251 million people affected globally in the year 2016. There are many risk factors that can lead to the development of COPD, with smoking and old age being the most common risk factors. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease wholly affects the persons live accompanied by symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, anxiety, coughing, increment in the production of phlegm, and tiredness.

Aim: the aim of the study was to describe the experiences of people living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Methodology: A literature-based study was conducted with ten qualitative articles obtained from the database CINAHL and PUBMED. The studies were subjected to a quality analysis and Friberg’s step analysis. Article searches were conducted between 2020 and 2021.

Results: The results of the articles were interpreted into a new result describing the daily struggles of people living with COPD. A main theme “when everyday life becomes a struggle for survival” and four subthemes were identified.

Conclusion: COPD effects the persons live in a lot of ways. People experience many limitations in their lives with the experience of guilt and shame being the strongest. To be able to minimize the suffering of people with COPD in the future, there is a much needed development in the nursing field and in the health sector on what it is like for people to live with COPD.

Methodological issues in the diagnostic work-up of food allergy: a real challenge.2007Ingår i: Journal of investigational allergology & clinical immunology, ISSN 1018-9068, E-ISSN 1698-0808, Vol. 17, nr 6, s. 350-356Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The standard of reporting in diagnostic studies has generally been low. Fortunately, this issue has begun to be addressed in recent years through the discussion of important methodological issues in educational series, textbooks, and checklists. Double-blind, placebo-controlled, oral food challenges (DBPCFC) are considered to be the gold standard for diagnosis of food allergy. However, there is no consensus regarding how to interpret the outcome and how to define positive and negative provocations in DBPCFC. Furthermore, since most theories on the diagnosis of food allergy rely on the assumption that the DBPCFC has a high accuracy, this accuracy must be formally statistically evaluated. In this review, we discuss essential methodological issues for diagnostic accuracy studies in general and for oral food challenges in particular and discuss the importance of methodological issues as a guide for forthcoming studies of diagnostic procedures.

Together for the Future – Development of a Digital Website to Support Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Self-Management: A Qualitative Study2021Ingår i: Journal of Multidisciplinary Healthcare, ISSN 1178-2390, E-ISSN 1178-2390, Vol. 14, s. 757-766Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Symptom burden, impaired functional performance and decreased quality of life are not only consequences of the underlying physiological disorder chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but also dependent on a patient's ability to learn to live with and manage their illness. A digital website may be important for empowering patients with COPD to learn about and self-manage their illness. The aim of this study was to describe a developing process of a digital COPD-web as a part of a self-management education program for persons living with COPD.

Methods: A qualitative approach with a phenomenological perspective was used. The study was based on group and individual interviews with a multidisciplinary COPD-team and patients who developed the COPD-web.

Results: The developing process appears as a person-centred and holistic self-care approach both in content and development. Developing a digital COPD-web requires ongoing multidisciplinary collaboration and spawns a sense of pride that reinforces shared responsibility. The phenomenon consists of four constituents: learning by participating in development, the patient perspective as guiding approach, responsibility and motivation as driving forces and digital technology as a knowledge arena.

Conclusion: The results indicate that constructive collaboration between a multidisciplinary COPD-team and patients as co-creators in an ongoing creative and reflective process is a key concept to develop a digital COPD-web with a holistic approach. Digital resources in the future might create time and space for reflective conversations in a COPD-web with virtual chatrooms.
