    Abstract [en]

    Höganäs AB is one of Sweden’s oldest companies established in 1797, the company have 1900 employees today and is one of the leading producers of metal powder in the world. From the subsidiary Höganäs Sweden AB 300,000 tonnes of metal powder was dispatched 2015. The material was sent to Höganäs customers that mainly consist of component manufacturers in the automotive, wood and other manufacturing industry.

    The purpose of this thesis is to suggest a new operational working process that will increase the efficiency of the order handling process. Throughout the investigation the present state of the process has been outlined and identified at Höganäs Sweden AB.

    Höganäs AB’s order handling process consists of many operations and interfaces that are involved to secure high delivery performance to the customers. The complexity of the process increases due to this and demands an effective communication between involved interfaces. The order handling process may vary depending on factors such as delivery terms, payment terms, transport, product, country, customs clearance and quantity. The variation of these factors makes it difficult to implement a standardized approach.

    It is valuable to Höganäs AB to streamline the process. The data recorded in the business system from the customer order is an important basis for production-, dispatch- and planning departments. The recorded data can be obtained earlier if high quality conditions are created that can increase the delivery performance and affect customer relationships positively.

    With support from the collected theory and the study that contains qualitative and quantitative primary data from Höganäs Sweden AB a new working process have been formed that excels the efficiency in the process. The new approach streamlines the overall process time by 40 percent and the overall lead time with 32 percent. In addition to the increased efficiency the number of information exchanges in the process was reduced significantly.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis work has been conducted at International Automotive Components Group in Torslanda, Sweden. The company produces door panels, instrument panels, consoles and cockpits for the automotive industry.

    During the production of door panels, defects such as pressure marks and scratches emerge which results in scrap and rework. The objective of the thesis work was to identify the causes of pressure marks and scratches and also to suggest measures to reduce the amount of scrap and rework on door panels.

    Through observations, interviews and experiments, several causes leading to pressure marks and scratches on door panels were identified. Small pieces of plastics on fixtures, the operator's rough handling and specific process steps are the main causes that result in pressure marks and scratches.

    Pressure marks and scratches emerge at several places on the door panels during the production. To reduce the amount of pressure marks and scratches both short-term and long-term measures were suggested. Some of the measures are:

    •  Use vacuum cleaners at some stations
    •  Add padding on unpadded areas and edges
    •  Make new instructions that emphasize to keep production stations clean and to avoid rough handling
    •  Introduce workshops to engage operators

    Abstract [en]

    Every year approximately 400 000 pedestrians are killed worldwide in road related injuries where children and elderly are the most exposed age groups. The design of the front-end of a vehicle and the structural stiffness have a significant influence on the kinematics and injury risks of the pedestrian body. To create a clearance between the rigid hood structure and the hood, the hood is lifted. A lifted hood does however not provide protection over the cowl, windscreen and A-pillar areas.

    This study is performed at Autoliv Sverige AB and the purpose is to examine how fast the hood can be lifted 100 mm using a pedestrian protection airbag. The airbag give an extended protection while covering the cowl, windscreen and A-pillar areas.

    A concept generation session was performed where modifications of the current pedestrian protection airbag, for a faster hood lift, were proposed. The generated concepts proceeded to a concept screening session where the Autoliv evaluation matrix was used.

    The selected concepts went further to static testing where the performance of each concept was tested. The performance include the lift time of 100 mm for the most rearward section of the hood, positioning of the cushion and pressure distribution. The tests were carried out in a room temperature environment.

    To conclude the thesis work, one winning concept could not be obtained. Two concepts excelled themselves from all the concepts and a difference in the performances between these two concepts could not be found.

    In this thesis no calculations on costs such as material costs and manufacturing costs has been made. This can be the major aspect on choosing one winning concept but due to the fact that there is no time for a cost analysis in this thesis, the PPA development team will take over.

    Machining processes studies and theories can be referred back to the beginnings of machine age, but recent developments in information technologies (Computers, processors, etc.) make it easier for the researchers to predict material behaviour during different machining processes.

    Machining is not a simple process to analyse due to the amount of variables affecting on it, in this study the author is trying to analyse and explain the forces acting on a AISI 1045 workpiece during the removal of material’s second layer using FEM, one of the challenging problems was to re implement the forces resulted from the first layer removal in the new cutting process to give the study more reliable output to compare with the actual results obtained previously the procedure used to reach this is explained in chapter 3, there are many software used to define FEM analysis each has its benefits and limitations, LS-DYNA which is used in this study is one of those software "it is capable of simulating nonlinear problems involving large deformations, sophisticated material models and complex contact conditions".

    As well as LS-DYNA, HyperMesh and Ls-prepost are used in this study to mesh the tools and workpiece, and pre-set the material parameters respectively.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis presents the approach of determining the machining  errors on a five axis CNC machine using sensors already fitted in the machine to extract valuable data up on process called CITE(CNC Integrity Tracing Equipment) system and measuring the machined workpiece geometry using CMM(Coordinate measurement machine). CITE measurement system is the data acquisition hardware and software system developed by University West for collecting position information from encoders of a machine tool. The collected information could then be used to assess the quality and adjustment of a machine tool, CNC programs and the CNC control parameters. The aim of this study is to examine the roundness and concentricity detection capacity of the CITE system by conducting different milling methods and a turning process. In an example cutting of a workpiece, the CITE measurement system was used for recording the machining process. After that, radial error, centre point deviation and circle roundness errors, analysed using MATLAB based on collected CNC tool movement data. CMM measurement used to verify the results obtained from the CITE measurement system. The investigation conducted on the small circles shows that the CITE measurement system have capability of identifying radial errors in different method of millings (slot, up and down). Centre point deviation and roundness errors measured by the CITE system doesn`t show significant differences between milling methods as seen on CMM measurement.

    Abstract [en]

    Investigations on remote temperature sensing of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) at the surface and at the bond-coat/top-coat interface were carried out. Using Y2O3:Eu thermographic phosphor as an embedded temperature sensing layer, sub-surface temperature probing through 300 mu m of atmospheric plasma sprayed YSZ is demonstrated. The Y2O3:Eu thermographic phosphor displays a temperature sensitivity ranging between 400 degrees C up to a maximum of 900 degrees C when utilizing the luminescence originating from the 611 nm emission band. Dysprosium stabilized zirconia (10 wt.% DySZ), a TBC material, is also investigated and established as a temperature sensor from 400 degrees C up to a temperature of 1000 degrees C using both the intensity decay time and emission intensity ratio methods. In addition, the luminescence of presumed optically inactive YSZ materials was spectroscopically investigated in terms of optical interferences caused by impurities. A validation temperature probing measurement through 300 mu m of YSZ top-coat was successfully performed in a SGT-800 Siemens burner running at six different operating conditions in an atmospheric combustion rig.     Abstract [en]

    Management systems are widely used for creating order, minimising risks and for assuring performance. Management systems are in many occasions integrated since this has been found to be beneficial. In this paper a model for a fully integrated management system (IMS) based on the three axes of level, extent and scope of integration is tested for relevance. The studied system permits the integration of all relevant process dimensions. The research is only in a pilot stage, but the initial results are promising and indicate that there are advantages in using the process view as a base for identifying critical aspects to be managed. A review of the current situation for system integration is studied and the model is subjected to some tests using Sweden as a case. The background study shows that system integration still is limited, especially when comparing with a fully integrated IMS. The feedback from the organisations interviewed is positive and supports continued work with development of the model.

    Abstract [en]

    Energy efficiency means that energy is used in an efficient way that impacts positively on the environment and society.

    Sisjö Entré is a shopping center which has an annual energy consumption of 1 865 270 kWh, and according to Energy Authority, the recommended value is 1 530 000 kWh per year. That means that energy consumption at the center should reduce by approximately 18 % to comply with the recommended value. The mall consists of 17 stores and the thesis examines five stores which are Toys Я Us, Rusta, Burger King, Babyproffsen and Webhallen. Measurements are taken on ventilation and lighting installations with the aim of studying the loads in the stores that consume the most energy. The goal is to come up with suggestions of actions to reduce energy consumption and costs.

    We concluded that lighting consumes the most energy in the warehouses; Toys Я Us, Rusta, Babyproffsen and Webhallen, while the largest load in the restaurants (Burger King) is the kitchen, which accounts for 75 % of the restaurants total consumption.

    In Rusta, we discovered that the electricity meter showed a lower value than the true consumption. After investigation, we concluded that the fault could be either in the electricity meter or in its current transformer and must be addressed.

    We have given a proposal to replace parts of the existing lighting installations, and given suggestion for sectioning certain parts in some stores. Further, we have given suggestions for reducing operating times on the ventilation units.

    Based on the above proposals and energy calculations, we concluded that these five stores has the potential to reduce the annual energy consumption from 1 865 270 kWh to 1 576 670 kWh, leading to a reduction by 15.5 %. This reduces costs by about 228 000 SEK per year

    The aim of this study is to investigate the role Business Intelligence (BI) can play in government and more specifically at the municipality level. The study aims to investigate how data collected from a municipality Contact Center can be leveraged with the help of a BI solution. The study focuses on the Contact Center at Järfälla Kommun (municipality) and investigates whether a BI implementation can help to realize more effective planning, resource allocation and improved services and e-services. Municipality Contact Centers are becoming an increasingly popular precedent providing municipal residents with a centralized service where they can make inquiries, provide information, lodge complaints or commend actions related to activities within the specific municipality. BI can turn raw data into concrete figures and reports, map patterns and trends and support effective decision making. It can also however be costly and difficult to integrate and face resistance due to perceived complexity. This paper aims to take such notions into consideration and investigate the feasibility of implementing such a solution in the context of a municipality Contact Center.

    This paper identifies various benefits and drawbacks from literature which are then modeled into a SWOT framework. In addition, semi-structured interviews are utilized in this study and targeted at stakeholders knowledgeable in the Contact Center, BI, or both. Findings from the SWOT framework will be measured against the findings from the interviews and an analysis of correlations between the two sources will be investigated.

    In this work, a ROS (Robot Operating System) version of OpenRatSLAM, [1] [2], was tested with Viso2 [3] as an alternative monocular odometer. A land based rover [4] was used to perform data acquisition and a remote control tool was developed to facilitate this procedure, implemented as ROS nodes on both Ubuntu 16.04 and on Android 7.0.  An additional requirement that comes from using Viso2 is the need for camera information together with the image stream, which might require camera calibration. A ROS node to manually add this camera information was made as well as a node to change the generated odometry message from Viso2 to a form that RatSLAM uses. The implemented odometer uses feature tracking to estimate motion, which is fundamentally different to matching intensity profiles which the original method does and can hence be used when different properties of the visual odometry function is desired. From experiments, it was seen that the feature tracking method from Viso2 generated a more robust motion estimate in terms of real world scale and it was also able to better handle environments of varying illumination or that contains large continuous surfaces of the same colour. However, the feature tracking may give slight variations in the generated data upon successive runs due to the random selection of features to track. Since the structure of RatSLAM gives the system ability to make loop closures even with large differences in position, an alternative odometry does not necessarily give a significant improvement in performance of the system in environments that the original system operates well in. Even though both algorithms show difficulty with estimating fast rotations, especially when the camera view contains areas with few features, the performance improvement in Viso2 together with its ability to better maintain the real-world scale motivates its usefulness.  The source code, as well as instructions for installation and usage is public.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this examination is to study and analyze whether two different housing companies in Trollhättan, Sweden, put their tenants in focus or not. Literature based on facility management, with emphasis in customer orientation and service management, has been used to enhance the authors’ knowledge base. Interviews with the chosen housing companies and questionnaires targeted to tenants have been implemented to proceed and to answer the general question of this examination. A comparison between the housing companies will evaluate if there is any difference between a company for public utility, Eidar, and one whom is owned privately, Lundqvist. The results of the data shows, from some angles, a great variation in tenants’ opinions considering their experiences regarding having a safe home, being taken seriously by their housing company and the possibility to suit their apartment along with personal wishes and/or needs. The main question is if the tenant feels him being in focus by the housing company. The analysis illuminates and discusses the results, which will lead to a conclusion. According to this study housing companies only partly keep their tenants in focus and the utility company seems to be less focused on the customers than the private-owned one.

    Autoliv Sverige AB är ett företag som ligger i Vårgårda och tillverkar airbagar, gasgeneratorer samt elektronik till radarsystem. I framtiden finns planer för att expandera produktionen men i dagsläget vet företaget inte hur mycket resurser som går åt för materialflödet till de olika produktionslinorna. För att ta reda på hur mycket personella resurser som behövs både i befintligt materialflöde och i framtida produktionslinor vill företaget undersöka systemet som matar fram material till produktionen. För att ta fram ett verktyg som gör detta används aktionsforskning som huvudmetodik. Aktionsforskning utgör en iterativ process som består av observationer, framtagning av lösningsförslag och utvärdering av lösningsförslag. Observationerna genomfördes i samband med datainsamlingen där Kanbanrundan undersöktes, definierades och mätetal togs fram. Detta för att få en grundförståelse för vad innehållet i verktyget skulle vara.Nästa steg i processen var framtagning av lösningförslag, vilka skapades med hjälp av benchmarking av interna dokument och informationen som samlats från observationerna. En konceptmodell per person skapades och ett koncept valdes sedan ut som utgångspunkt för fortsatt utveckling av verktyget. Modellen blev sedan granskad respektive förbättrad av medlemmarna och handledaren på företaget i en iterativ process.När modellen ansågs klar verifierades det mot verkligheten och den insamlade datan. Verktyget validerades sedan genom att en anställd på Logistikavdelningen fick testa det. Utöver utvecklandet av verktyget och insamlingen av datan utfördes en benchmarking både internt på företaget och externt på ett annat företag för att studera olika materialhanteringsprocesser.I analysen diskuterades för- och nackdelar med olika val och iakttagelser som gjorts, både i arbetssättet för detta examensarbete och dess olika delar men också för materialhanterarens arbetssätt och instruktioner. Resultatet av arbetet blev ett verktyg som uppfyller de krav som formulerades i början av arbetet. Utöver verktyget upptäcktes även ett flertal förbättringsmöjligheter kring materialflödet och produktionen.

    On-line programming of industrial robots is time consuming and requires experience in robot programming. Due to this fact, small and medium sized enterprises are reserved about the implementation of robots in production. Ongoing research in the field is focused on finding more intuitive interfaces and methods for programming to make the interaction with robots more natural and intuitive. This master thesis presents a method for manipulation of industrial robots utilizing an external device other than the traditional teach pendant. The base of the method is a PC application which handles the program logic and the communication between an external device and an ABB robot. The program logic is designed to be modular in order to allow customization of the method, both in terms of its functions and the type of external device that is used for the method.

    Since gestures are one of the most common forms of communication between humans, it is interesting to investigate gestures for the purpose to make manipulation of industrial robots more intuitive. Therefore, a Leap Motion controller is presented as an example of an external device which could be used as an alternative to the teach pendant. The Leap Motion controller is specialised on hand and finger position tracking with both good absolute accuracy and precision. Further, its associated Software Development Kit (SDK) has the capabilities which are required to enable implementation of a teach pendants most fundamental functionalities. Results obtained by a user test show that the developed application is both easy and fast to use but has poor robustness.

As the radial depth of cut is often an important parameter, particularly when machining difficult-to-cut materials, it is important to explore the driving mechanism behind vibrations generation. In this study, acceleration of the workpiece is measured for different radial depths of cut and cutting edge geometries. The influence of the radial depth of cut on the dynamical behavior is evaluated in time and frequency domains. The results for different radial depths of cut and cutting geometries are quantified using the root mean square value of acceleration. The outcome of this research study can be used both for the better cutting data recommendations and improved tool design.

    In the intermittent turning and milling processes, during the entry phase the cutting edges are subjected to high impact loads that can give rise to dynamical and strength issues which in general cause tool life reduction. In this study the effect of geometrical features of the cutting tool on the force generation during the entry phase is investigated. Cutting forces are measured by a stiff dynamometer at a high sampling frequency. In addition, the chip load area is analyzed and related to the measured cutting force. The results show that micro-geometrical features, in particular the protection chamfer, significantly affect the force generation during the entry phase.

    Nowadays the globalization of the market has a direct impact to the companies. On one hand, gives them the opportunity to spread their business but on the other hand increases the competition and the efforts to succeed. This project is pursuing to investigate and design a system capable to take upon and optimize the production within functional shops by in-troducing automation. Although the system it would be a standard solution for the functional shops, a case study for GKN Aerospace Company with its specifications has been carried out. The task become trickier due to the aeronautic sector requires a lot of work and effort to produce their products. The items and materials are expensive as well as the processes and treatments thus the introduction of automation is quite complex. This case study has accom-plished a research through the concepts and options to introduce automation within this production process. Taking under consideration the costs and efforts that would demand the investment for automation, the project propose a new and innovative manufacturing system "Move & Play", suitable with the features and requirements GKN Aerospace Company may need.The system proposed has been designed regarding to features such as movability, modularity and flexibility. These features have been considered essentials in order to make the system worth it and cost effective. The job-shop approach that the company use in its production contemplate the continuous change of products and introduction of new ones. Hence, the idea is to use the "Move & Play" system when it is required along the production. As a consequence, this system will create a "local product flow" along that point in the production that will organize the rest of the production or "global flow". Moreover it is expected to apply the concept of "plug-in" the processes that the system need at each time and therefore give flexibility to the system. With that purposes, the work has studied three different designs of the "Move & Play" system. Each design have considered different aspects and disposition. These designs have been compared according with criteria such as geometrical, the capacity and investment needed and the cycle time spent. Finally a conclusion on which design is the most suitable has been stated as well as a future work to continue with the work has been proposed.

    The business world is constantly subject to intense competition that requires continuous development of products, personnel and operations within the company. The development towards a better state comes at the expense of strict requirements in job descriptions where continuous improvement is part of the working role of individuals. In order to link the continuous improvement of the business well-being, there is a need of structured work for improvement in ways of a well-functioning suggestion scheme. Suggestion schemes main purpose is to utilize the experience and knowledge of all employees by encouraging individuals' skills and creativity, which will contribute with innovative and competitive suggestions. Personnel is a resource that covers particular knowledge that no other company can copy; therefore it should be utilized to the maximum extent possible.

    The aim of the project is to identify and specify improvement measures for the suggestion scheme at GKN Aerospace Sweden AB in Trollhättan. The work consisted of an initial literature review, which included direct and indirect factors effecting the continuous improvement with linkage to the proposed suggestion scheme. In order to concretize the theoretical framework of the tools main purpose for the continuous improvement, a theoretical and a practical benchmarking was utilized. The company's current suggestion scheme was mapped and analyzed, and a foundation for future improvements was established.GKN Aerospace Sweden is part of the GKN Group, which operates in more than 30 countries around the world and employs about 50 000 individuals. The company manufactures components for aircraft and rocket engines, as well as service and maintenance. In the current situation GKN Aerospace manages a suggestion scheme that depends entirely on an internal IT system and has an average lead time of 43 weeks until a decision is made. The reward system for received suggestions is an economic reimbursement calculated through a complex formula. The entire suggestion scheme process is extensive and includes several loops for conducting the evaluation of suggestions.

    The thesis resulted in improvement propositions based on studies and situation analysis, but differs from the expected target to improve and develop the current system. The problem that arose was that the current system does not support the company's expectations for the suggestion scheme process. It resulted in a completely new system with associated procedures and reward guidelines were developed to create incentives and higher motivation for the submission of suggestions for improvement. The improvement propositions resulted in: dedicated time for improvements, group-based activities for continuous improvements, start-up meetings, new process, basis for the development of a new IT system, economic and symbolic rewards.Date: 2015-

    Hot corrosion behavior of solution precursor plasma spray (SPPS) thermal barrier coating (TBC) in molten salt mixtures of 90wt.% Na<inf>2</inf>SO<inf>4</inf>+5wt.% V<inf>2</inf>O<inf>5</inf>+5wt.% NaCl and 50wt.% Na<inf>2</inf>SO<inf>4</inf>+50wt.% V<inf>2</inf>O<inf>5</inf> at 900°C is compared vis-à-vis atmospheric plasma spray (APS) coating. APS TBCs show better hot corrosion resistance than SPPS TBCs in both the salt mixtures. The vertical cracks in SPPS coatings, meant for strain tolerance and high thermal cycling life, serve as channels for transporting salts across the coating to bond coat/top coat interface and accelerate failure. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

    The internet is growing, and more devices are becoming connected for each day that passes by. This will increase the number of routes in the routing-table on the routers and L3 switches and as they are increasing it will affect the delay on the packets traversing between the source and destination. Or does it matter? Does the size of a routing table affect the delay? In this study, we have researched if there is a difference in the delay on the packets in a comparison to the size of the routing-table and this is compared between a router and L3 switch. During this study, we have been using a desktop computer that has two network interfaces installed in it and is connected to a router or L3 switch. We used three different programs on the computer that have been very helpful for completion of our work: Wireshark, to monitor and capture packets and the time between the two network interfaces on the desktop computer. Tftpd32, to copy the running-configurations from the router or L3 switch over to the desktop computer and back. Ostinato, is used to generate and send out packets on the network. All the results we got from our tests point to that there is no increase in delay no matter how much the routing-table is increasing. These results challenge previous studies that tells us the opposite, that the increase of a routing-table does have an increase in delay.

    Company Purtech in Dals-Ed manufactures molded polyurethane (PUR). Examples of products that include polyurethane are car seats. Robots are used to fill the molds with PUR and to apply the release agent (wax) in the empty molds.

    Turning from online programming into a graphical offline programming of release agent spraying robots is going to simplify the process by:

    1. Applying less of release agent to avoid polluting environment, to produce an easier removal of moulds, for the sake of homogeneous moulds and for economical saving in the cost of release agent
    2. Adaption of spraying paths to variation in production speed.
    3. Programming of complex spraying trajectories to deal with sharp geometrical subsurface
    4. Decreasing onsite programming time (when program a new workpiece or modify an old one); so that robots would be free for production.

    While turning into offline programming brought the challenges of:

    1. Impact of variation in the production speed
    2. Lack of 3D models of workcell’s equipments
    3. Robot joint configuration when paths and robtargets are in move.
    4. Physical Joint limits, Singularities & Reach limits
    5. Collisions within the cell space.

    At the end, the following objectives are successfully met:

    1. Adaption of spraying programs to variation in production speed by developing and embedding a method in those programs.
    2. Graphical offline generation of spraying trajectories and optimization of those trajectories to the Purtech condition of spraying allowed time for each carrier.
    3. Simulation of release agent spraying process; and producing of a well structured RAPID program that reflect the simulated process.

    This thesis will make a comparative analysis of the operation safety of the wire connection to Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) with bus-controller. The report describes the basic description of the difference between these two systems and will explore which is safer and more economic with consideration to qualification according to Swedish energy companies' guidelines for dam safety (Ridas).Through course literature, ABB Bok, internet web sits and interviews with Skellefteå Kraft AB staff the result of this report have been created.The report results prove that PLC with bus-controller will operate operationally safe and profitable compared to wire connection to RTU. Results also showed that there is nothing which prevents to install bus-controller according to RIDAS but certain features should be installed.

    Since the year 2000, some periodic investigations have been performed in the Lilla Edet region to monitor and possibly determine the landslide of the area with GPS measurements. The responsible consultant has conducted this project by setting up some stable stations for GPS receivers in the risky areas of Lilla Edet and measured the independent baselines amongst the stations according to their observation plan. Here, we optimise the existing surveying network and determine the optimal configuration of the observation plan based on different criteria.We aim to optimise the current network to become sensitive to detect 5 mm possible displacements in each net point. The network quality criteria of precision, reliability and cost are used as object functions to perform single-, bi- and multi-objective optimisation models. It has been shown in the results that the single-objective model of reliability, which is constrained to the precision, provides much higher precision than the defined criterion by preserving almost all of the observations. However, in this study, the multi-objective model can fulfil all the mentioned quality criteria of the network by 17% less measurements than the original observation plan, meaning 17%of saving time, cost and effort in the project.

    In order to detect the geo-hazards, different deformation monitoring networks are usually established. It is of importance to design an optimal monitoring network to fulfil the requested precision and reliability of the network. Generally, the same observation plan is considered during different time intervals (epochs of observation). Here, we investigate the case that instrumental improvements in sense of precision are used in two successive epochs. As a case study, we perform the optimisation procedure on a GPS monitoring network around the Lilla Edet village in the southwest of Sweden. The network was designed for studying possible displacements caused by landslides. The numerical results show that the optimisation procedure yields an observation plan with significantly fewer baselines in the latter epoch, which leads to saving time and cost in the project. The precision improvement in the second epoch is tested in several steps for the Lilla Edet network. For instance, assuming two times better observation precision in the second epoch decreases the number of baselines from 215 in the first epoch to 143 in the second one.

    The thesis has been performed at Volvo Car Customer Service in Gothenburg, Sweden. The output from the study will support Volvo to secure the Just-In-Time delivery of referrals for the after-market. The scope was limited to referrals from pre-planned orders, which occurs when there is no availability in the distribution centre where the orders were placed.

    Volvo's main warehouse in Europe is the Central Distribution Centre, which process referrals. The warehouse had an ongoing organisational change during this study. The concern was that the change would not lead to optimal conditions for processing referrals for different markets. It was therefore important to preserve the market knowledge in order to maintain a reliable referral service.

    A qualitative study was used and the information was gathered primarily through semi-structured interviews. Literature was studied both initially and continuously through the study. Analyse of the literature, current situation and data collection generated ideas for possible ways of securing the referral process and improvements. Benchmarking and Workshop was also performed in order to obtain further ideas.

    The result of this study was an information material containing information about all concerned markets, overview of referral flow and information regarding how the Central Distribution Centre needs to print referrals. The proposals suggested for future work were explained in long- and short-term. The short-term suggestions include use of the developed material in order to preserve the knowledge along with providing correct working conditions. For long-term suggestions focus has been on how to reduce or remove the printing problem. For future work Volvo Car Customer Service should consider these proposals in order to secure and improve the referral service.

    Before the touch-sensitive screen technology invented and being widely used all over the world, the education process was limited to three main points, the student, the teacher and the subject. Now the touch-sensitive screen is quickly becoming the fourth point that supports the education process.

    The aim of this project is to define the role of touch technology on education, and to check how the process has changed using new materials. The project will mainly analyse the impact of those devices in primary schools, age 6 – 12 years and their teachers.

    The report is divided into three main parts, the first part is to examine the effect of touch devices on the student, the second part related to the impact of these devices on the teacher and the third part will investigate how the touch technology influences the educational material. In the report I will also try to highlight the most important pros and cons of this technology, and also to highlight the most important flaws and shortcomings of using the devices in this area to make use of this useful technology.

    The study will also show how the results differ using such devices, outcomes including doing homework, working together in groups, communicating with other students and teachers.

    The manufacturing industry and associated systems are being developed in an increasing manner to cover the market needs, where the manufacturing companies are continuously racing and competing to achieve high productivity rate and better production quality. In this thesis work, an advanced method for motion control of industrial robots has been investigated and implemented. This method is based on motion tracking of a 3DSpaceMouse, which was used to perform movements by the operator. The benefits and disadvantages of this method were discussed in this thesis work. It mainly showed a high accuracy in response to the motion applied by the 3DSpaceMouse, and a great stability regarding the programming environment that was used to build it. The movements applied by the 3DSpaceMouse were successfully captured and stored in variables in the programming platform. The capturing and storing process was successfully created as a package and prepared to be exported for usage by other software. Complete simulation was performed for an industrial robot, and successful communications among the various hardware and software components of this solution were accomplished. This has formed a complete integrated solution that has also included a user-friendly HRI. This HRI made it easy and simple to track the motion control processes and establish connections with the robot controller. Thus, it can be considered a feasible solution for motion control of industrial robots, which can be used by the manufacturing companies. Several tests and verification processes were carried out to obtain accepted results and to succeed in implementing a working model. Some errors and unexpected events have appeared during the work, which required handling in order to achieve a working integrated system.

    Abstract [en]

    Process planning as a function for competitiveness is often neglected. However, as an intermediary between product development and manufacturing, it holds a key function in transforming product specifications and requirements into a producible process plan. Demands and requirements should be met concurrently as manufacturing costs and lead times are minimised. The focus of this thesis is the act of process planning, where the use of better methodologies, computer-aids and performance measurements are essential parts. Since process planning has the function of transforming demands and requirements, changing customer and regulative requirements are vital to regard. Since environmentally benign products and production increases in importance, the research presented in this thesis includes a CNC machining cost model, which relates machining costs to energy consumption.  The presented results in this thesis are based on quantitative and qualitative studies in the metal working industry.

     

    This thesis has contributed to an enhanced understanding of process planning to achieve better performance and important areas for improvements. Despite a 50 year history of computerised process planning aids, few of these are used in the industry, where manual process planning activities are more common. Process planning aids should be developed around the process planner so that non-value adding activities, such as information management and documentation are minimised in order to allow more resources for value adding activities, such as decision making. This thesis presents a study of systematic process planning in relation to perceived efficiency. This correlation could however not be verified, which opens up for further studies of other possible explanations for process planning efficiency. Process planning improvements in the industry are difficult to make, since there is little focus on process planning activities and limited knowledge about actual performance hereof. This means that measures taken regarding process planning development are difficult to verify.

    Process planning as an enabler of competiveness is often overlooked, but being one of the principal function in the product realisation flow it holds a key role by combining both product and production requirements into a production concept with respect to the current manufacturing system. As such the capability of process planning to a large extent dictates production cost, lead times, product quality etc. With the introduction of new demands on production, such as environmental impact and process capability, process planning must be able to manage these demands effectively. Accordingly, it is vital to study the effects that up-coming demands have on the act of process planning. The research methods employed in this work include surveys (questionnaires and interviews), industrial case studies and experiments to provide data for models developed. The main finding of this research is that there is a lack of quantified process planning performance knowledge in the industry, which leads to verification problems as to whether changes that are made render anticipated effects. Results of surveys also indicated a low level of digitalisation of product data and limited use of computer aids (CAM, feature-based CAM and PLM) in Swedish industry based on 144 companies' response. A concept to improve process planning performance through operation classification based on process capability indices (Cp/Cpk) was suggested. The role of process planning in designing cost efficient and energy efficient machining operations has been maintained throughout the thesis by showing how tool selection and machining parameters selection influences the possibilities to achieve these objectives. This work has also showed that no inherent contradictions appear to exist between achieving cost efficient and energy efficient machining operations. This thesis has contributed to an enhanced understanding of how process planning improvements can be achieved through a holistic perspective of the process planning function, where both technical and methodological aids are included. It is however essential to understand the current situation of the process planning organisation, its internal/external relations, level of digitalisation, competency level etc. before major changes of the process planning function are undertaken in order to be successful.

    The paper presents an investigation regarding the potential and the readiness for implementing performance indicators and performance measurement systems of the process planning work for metal working companies. The paper is based on a questionnaire survey distributed to process planners in the Swedish metal working industry. The main outcome of the investigation is a foundation for understanding the implementation of performance measures of the process planning work for CNC machining. The survey revealed a few strengths and short comings in the studied companies.

    Abstract [en]

    Process planning is the link between design and manufacturing and consequently an important function, since it influences many of the company objectives. However, many companies have little knowledge about their process planning function and the efficiency is thus not optimal. The paper focuses on the automation level of process planning as a mean to improve process planning efficiency. Six CNC machining companies was interviewed and accordingly analysed through a five dimensional automation level model to understand their process planning work. The main findings are that the automation level is low and concurrent engineering is lacking in many of the investigated companies.

    Abstract [en]

    The role of process planning as an enabler for cost efficient and environmentally benign CNC machining is investigated in the paper. Specific energy is used as the principal indicator of energy efficient machining and different methods to calculate and estimate this is exemplified and discussed. The interrelation between process planning decisions and production outcome is sketched and process capability can be considered as one factor of green machining. A correlation between total machining cost and total energy use was shown for an experimental case. However, to generalise conclusions, the importance of having reliable data during process planning to make effective decisions should not be underestimated.

    Abstract [en]

    Process planning of CNC machining is critical to ensure cost, time and quality parameters of manufacturing operations. At the heart of process planning is, typically the process planner, who must make a multitude of decisions regarding machines, cutting strategies, tools and process parameters etc. Today there are a number of different tools and methods available to aid the process planner. This paper explores today’s industrial use of some of these aids and outlinespotential underlying reasons for the current state. The empirical data is based on a questionnaire survey of Swedish CNC machining sub-contractors. The main conclusion is that despite a long history of development of various aids (CAD/CAM, PLM standards etc.) there is still a large proportion of the industry, which has not yet adopted these aids. By the responding companies 32% do not use any CAM system and only 2% use a PLM system. On the other side of the spectrum is a group of 25% that uses CAM in 75% or more of their planned products. The learning from this survey can be used to better understand the industrial needs and focus research and development efforts.

    This article presents a brief state of the art in the Swedish metal working industry regarding the production preparation process for the machine centre. The article is based on a relationship model from which a questionnaire was developed. The model incorporates the perceived preparation process efficiency, the amount of systematic preparation work, in relation to the companies’ premises as possible causes. The investigation is based on a general hypothesis that a more systematic approach in the preparation process leads to higher preparation process efficiency. This hypothesis was supplemented by two more hypotheses and additional analyses to create an understanding of the situation. The main finding in this investigation is that there appear to be no relationship between increased  ystematic preparation work and perception of higher preparation efficiency. The investigation also indicates that many metal working companies have little knowledge about the performance of their preparation process and that there is an efficiency improvement potential of nearly 30%.

    General cost for CNC machining and the associated energy cost are set in the context of making economic and environmental improvements. This creates an incentive for manufacturing companies to investigate the energy efficiency of manufacturing processes. The paper presents a costing model, based on machining experiments. The model is accompanied with an industry based case to estimate the cost savings. The results show that substantial cost savings with respect to energy efficiency is unlikely, since energy costs in CNC machining comprises a small cost component. However significant cost savings can be achieved if the production output is increased as a consequence from higher material removal rates due to optimised machining parameters.

    Increasing environmental demands from governmental bodies and customers stress the importance of companies improving their environmental performance. The research presented here shows that productivity and cost efficiency improvements can be achieved alongside energy savings in a computer numerically controlled machining environment. This improves the profitability of the companies, but also leads them towards more sustainable and environmentally aware manufacturing; the relationship between machining parameters, machining costs, and energy consumption is evaluated. From this perspective, it is important that production planners etc. understand the methodological possibilities for improvements in cost and energy efficiency. The current research is based on a machining cost model and experiments where energy consumption and tool wear were monitored.

    Abstract [en]

    The recovery voltage is the voltage that occur when the transition resistor in the tap-changer leaves its previous position during an operation cycle. The amplitude of the recovery voltage depends on the leakage inductance.

    If the leakage inductance is unknown, the recovery voltage can instead be calculated using a FEM-program called ACE (internal ABB-program) in conjunction with Mathcad. First, the reactances between the windings are calculated in per unit (p.u) using ACE and they depend on the winding layout. It is time consuming to use ACE and Mathcad and the task has been to investigate the parameters that affects the recovery voltage and to develop a simplified calculation of it.

    Through simulation using ACE of a number of different winding layouts one soon comes to the conclusion that there are simply too many parameters affecting the reactances. Although the simplified calculations that despite this has been developed, they soon prove to be too rough to be useful. Mathcad is even more complex with heavy calculations that are not easy to grasp.

    However, this thesis has given more knowledge about the way the reactances are affected by the geometry of the windings, even though it was not possible to in a reasonable way simplify the calculation of ACE and Mathcad.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis deals with the practices of processing work. The work is being performed with TROLK El & Tele AB and is ordered by Ellevio AB. The area that the work is carried out at is Galtö in Tanum. The area includes about 10 km cable installation, 4 substations and 5 satellite substations and three low voltage areas where the grid are going to be rebuilt. Ellevio AB has invested in this project as they want to weather proof and ensure a high quality of the power delivery. The preparatory work that is presented as a proposal TROLK can continue to work with and apply for the relevant permits. These permits have been accounted for when this work has been prepared. The existing overhead line will be dismantled when the new grid has been connected. The overhead line is approximately 5.2 km long and includes nine pole mounted transformers. The work is based on the project documents that Ellevio has provided, though some changes have been made where necessary.

    The thesis also identifies the environmental aspects arising from the dismantling of an overhead power grid and investigates alternative solutions to reduce the environmental impact. When TROLK are working with projects commissioned by Ellevio they are using the environmental plan handed by Ellevio. The environmental plan have been studied and compared with other actors' environmental plans in order to identify potential improvements. The study identified that the greatest environmental aspects is the hazardous waste of creosote impregnated power poles and PCB-contaminated oil. No major improvements in the waste management has been. Focus has then been to examine options to replace the hazardous materials for new installations. It has been found several different options to the creosote power pole that all have different effects on the environment and there are therefore no obvious alternative. PCB-contaminated oil are currently not allowed in the grid but as it means a big expense to replace dispensations has been distributed to the owners of the power grid until it has been rebuilt.

    Abstract [en]

    In the last couple of years, the evolution of plug-in electric cars has contributed to an increasing need of well-built charging infrastructure. This does not only require that the fair amount of charging stations needs to match the increasing demand, but the growing amount of charging station could also affect the power quality in the grid itself due to the technology used today.

    The objective of the first part of the project was to deliver a complete installation plan and project basis of two AC charging stations for electric vehicles, planned in the city of Kungälv. The second part of the project was focused on studying the effects of DC fast charging of electric vehicles, with power quality in mind. This study was based on readings obtained from measuring the power quality at an existing DC fast charging station in Kungälv, as well as available publications within the area of the subject. The project planning was conducted in regards to Swedish standards and regulations, as well as to the instructions and expectations of the client, Kungälv Energi. The result was compiled and handed over to the client during the final part of the project. The resulting document contained information regarding installation, material and placement as well as approximate cost calculations.

    The power quality study was carried out on a currently installed fast charging station located in the city of Kungälv, using power quality measuring instruments provided by Kungälv Energi and Metrum Sweden AB. The result was a power quality report, compiled according to Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate, where all requirements concerning power quality were met. The data was also analyzed manually, to further investigate the effects of DC fast charging. The study shows no immediate signs of negative impact of the power quality in the nearby grid caused by the fast charging stations within the project. There were signs of harmonics caused by the charging stations, but the presence was considered low. The usage frequency is however a major factor when investigating the power quality affection of the charging station. This results in a conclusion that is not generally applicable.

    Projektet syftar till att klargöra hur den nya fastighetsmäklarlagen ifrån 2011 har mottagits och vilka konsekvenser den har fått för mäklarnas arbete, när det gäller kringtjänster. Mäklarens arbete har inte förändrats på något radikalt sätt. Tidigare fanns ett arbete med kringtjänster vilka inte fick erhållas arvode för medan det efter lagändringen är möjligt med ersättning. Denna får däremot, enligt den nya lagen, endast vara obetydlig.

    Målet med projektet var att ge svar på ett flertal frågeställningar. Att undersöka hur lagen utfallit avseende utbud och efterfrågan av kringtjänster samt utreda om skillnader finns i omfattning av utbud och användande utav kringtjänster vad avser storstad – landsort? Dessutom undersöktes antalet prövade tillsynsärenden och branschens syn på framtiden.

    För att utreda frågeställningarna användes den deskriptiva metoden i kombination med den sekundära informationen. Detta för att beskriva och förklara bakgrunden och vilket synsätt branschen haft på frågan om kringtjänster tidigare. För att nå den primära informationen och utreda vilka åsikter och tankar som nu finns gällande kringtjänster användes kvalitativa frågor i samband med att utvalda branschrepresentanter intervjuades. Fastighetsmäklarförbundet (FMF) och Mäklarsamfundet intervjuades för att få en övergripande bild av marknaden. De mäklarbolag som intervjuades, valdes för att de antingen var bland de största i landet eller hade någon knytning till kringtjänstsamarbeten.

    Branschen har tagit emot lagändringen på olika sätt. Till exempel får Bjurfors mäklare inte själva del i den ersättning som tillfaller företaget för de kringtjänster som förmedlas utan ersättningen går till administrationen av kringtjänsterna. Länsförsäkringar fastighetsförmedling tar inte ut någon ersättning när det gäller de samarbeten och tjänster de förmedlar. Övriga använder sig av kringtjänsteersättningar i varierande mängd. Branschorganisationerna har skilda utgångspunkter i flertalet frågor och olika synsätt. FMF var när förslaget kom, emot att ersättning för kringtjänster skulle tillåtas och Mäklarsamfundet arbetade för förslaget. FMF förhandlar vissa tjänster som är nära knutna till mäklaryrket åt sina medlemmar, medan Mäklarsamfundet har avvecklat de produkter som de haft. Fastighetsmäklarnämnden har ännu inte prövat något tillsynsärende gällande hantering av kringtjänster och de oklara ersättningsanvisningarna utifrån den nya fastighetsmäklarlagen.

    Rapporten utreder om distributionstransformatorer med märkeffekten 50 kVA i Vattenfall Eldistribution AB:s elnät kan avskaffas till förmån för märkeffekten 100 kVA. Transformatorer med märkeffekten 50 kVA förekommer vid nedtransformering av spänningen från 22 kV och 11 kV till hushållens huvudspänning 0,4 kV.

    50 kVA-transformatorer skiljer inte särskilt mycket från transformatorer med den högre märkeffekten i fråga om storlek och pris, och de bedöms kunna bytas ut utan större praktiska svårigheter.

    Fördelen med 100 kVA är att de elektriska belastningsförlusterna blir lägre i och med den högre märkeffekten. Dessutom innebär ett byte vissa elkvalitetsförbättringar.

    Nackdelarna med 100 kVA är att de elektriska tomgångsförlusterna är högre och att inköpspriset är högre än för 50 kVA. I övrigt kan kostnaderna likställas för de två alternativen.

    Endast kostnader för aktiva effektförluster berördes i rapporten då de ekonomiska kostnaderna för reaktiva effektförluster kunde försummas för de aktuella transformatorerna.

    För att nå ett svar på frågan om det kan vara lönsamt att avskaffa 50 kVA-transformatorerna studerades fem verkliga fall i Vattenfalls svenska elnät. Dessutom studerades eventuella elkvalitetsvinster med ett byte.

    Svaret blev att inte för något av de fem studerade fallen var det lönsamt med ett byte till 100 kVA-transformator. Rörande elkvalitetsaspekten blev svaret att ett byte visserligen innebär en skillnad men att andra faktorer oftast har större betydelse. Rapportens rekommendation blev att behålla 50 kVA-transformatorn i distributionsnätet.

    This report will focused on how the preparatory work between Myren-Torseröd in Tanum will proceed. On behalf of Ellevio AB, the preparation and construction company Trolk EL & Tele AB shall weatherproof an area between Galtö-Torseröd in Tanum. This report will only include the distribution 0,4-24 kV in the area between Myren-Torseröd. The existing overhead line network will be dismantled and replaced with underground cables. Even existing substations and pole stations to be scrapped and replaced with new ones. During the preparatory work, there have been field visits to get an overview of the field of processing operations, and to measure the position of e.g. substations. To have access to the ground the preparation worker must sign contracts with landowners, and shall also seek authorization from the County Administrative Board, the transport department and municipality. The entire preparation work in this project includes 68 customers.

    Abstract [en]

    The objective of this thesis was to design a joint that combines high precision and high damping. A possible application for the joint is to reduce vibrations in machine tools or workpieces during metal cutting processes. The goal was that the joint would clamp a test steel beam with the maximum repeatable referencing precision of 0,05 mm and increase the dynamic stiffness in the beam by 200 %. The increase in dynamic stiffness should also be achieved with less than 20 % reduction in static stiffness in the beam. Five different joint types were evaluated from which pinned joint was selected. Damping is accomplished by incorporating a thin layer of viscoelastic material in the joining surfaces and three pins are used for precision alignment between the surfaces.

    The joint was tested with the finite element method to evaluate the damping property before it was manufactured. After manufacturing, an experimental modal test was performed using an impact hammer to evaluate the damping capability. The precision of the joint was measured in a CNC machine. Experiments showed that the repeatable referencing precision of the joint is inside 0,05 mm. The dynamic stiffness in the beam is increased by 180 % with 23 % decrease in static stiffness.

    Abstract [en]

    The goal of this thesis work has been to develop and manufacture an ice layer which was to be mounted on the tip of a scaled down wing model. The iced wing should be tested in a wind tunnel and aerodynamic comparisons should be made to the same wing without ice.The development of the ice was carried out as a modified product development process. The main differences are that there is no costumer and that the actual shape and functions of the product are more or less predetermined. The challenge was to find the best way to create the ice layer and how to mount it to the wing without damaging it or covering any pressure sensors. Product development methods such as pros and cons lists and prototypes were used to solve problems before printing the plastic ice layer in a rapid prototyping machine.Wind tunnel experiments were then conducted on the wing with and without the manufactured ice. Raw data from the wind tunnel were processed and lift and drag coefficients were calculated using mathematical equations. Finally, conclusions were drawn by comparing the results from the wind tunnel tests with theory, other works as well as CFD simulations.The ice layer was successfully manufactured and it met the target specifications. The aerodynamic performance of an iced aircraft wing proved to be considerably worse compared to a blank wing. The maximum achievable lift force decreased by 22% and an increased drag force will require more thrust from the airplane.

    Syftet med studien var att utreda huruvida det råder en konsekvent hantering av tillsynsavgifter och ifall beslut om nedsättning tas på lika grunder. Tanken var att rapporten skulle kunna påvisa om verkligheten avspeglar lagstiftningen.

    Grunden till denna studie är frågeställningarna;

    1. Hur beslutar tillsynsmyndigheter om tillsynsavgifter?

    2. I vilken utsträckning beviljar tillsynsmyndigheter nedsättning av tillsynsavgiften?

    3. I vilken utsträckning begär verksamhetsutövare nedsättning av tillsynsavgiften?

    Begreppet täkt definieras som arbetsföretag vilket primärt syftar till att nyttiggöra det uttagna materialet. Detta sker antingen genom direktförsäljning eller i övrig verksamhet inom det egna företaget. Arbetet handlar endast om tillståndspliktiga täkter och i Sverige finns det omkring 2300 sådana igång. Tillsynsavgiften för täkterna ligger på omkring 800 kronor per timme och i snitt läggs det enligt våra intervjuer tio timmar tillsynstid per täkt och år. Det sammanlagda beloppet på tillsynskostnader i Sverige ligger således på drygt arton miljoner kronor.

    Arbetet inleds med en teoridel där läsaren ges möjlighet att få en djupare förståelse för täkter, tillsynsavgifter, nedsättning och de lagrum som skall följas i samband med detta. Teorin grundas på litteraturstudier och samtal med sakkunniga. Följt av teorin kommer en undersökning som valdes att utföras genom intervjuer med ett visst antal kommuner, Länsstyrelser och verksamhetsutövare. Sammanställningen av intervjuerna blev grunden för det avslutande resultatet och de slutsatser som kunde tas av undersökningen.

    Resultatet av arbetet visar på att tillsynsmyndigheter fattar beslut om tillsynsavgifter och nedsättning på olika sätt och grunder. För att få en mer likvärdig hantering av frågorna skulle en tydligare och mer konkret lagstiftning behöva arbetas fram. Vi kunde också fastslå att Naturvårdsverket som har en tillsynsvägledande roll i sammanhanget inte verkar nå ut till de tillsynsansvariga då de flesta av dem inte vet om att Naturvårdverket tillhandahåller detta stöd. Det är många frågor som väcks efter att ha fullbordat denna studie och listan på förslag till framtida arbete kan därmed göras lång

    Abstract [en]

    AB Volvo Penta manufactures and sells motors and drive systems for marine and industrial applications. The plant in Vara is specialized within manufacturing of marine diesel engines.The plant in Vara is about to go through major changes. The reason is a merger with Volvo Penta Production (VPP) located in Gothenburg. In connection with the merger there is going to be redevelopment of the plant. The station for packaging degradation is going to move and it needs to be redeveloped because it is not an efficient neither ergonomic workstation.The purpose of this project was to develop a suggestion of a new workstation for the packaging degradation. The goal was to develop a suggestion that is more efficient and ergonomically adapted. Data was collected through a situation analysis.To fulfill the purpose the project group performed literature studies, collected data and facts. The theory that was studied focused on lean, station design and layout, work environment and ergonomics. Stakeholders, earlier studies and packaging materials were examined. The next step was benchmarking, the group visited VPP in Gothenburg, Logent AB in Skövde and Mape Sweden AB in Trollhättan. Facts were collected through observations, interviews and a workshop with operators.After that the group studied different flows for the station. The result was to move forward with a parallel flow and a U-shaped flow. Then the group used the flows to form layouts. The final result was a U-cell with the operator and material placed outside the cell. The U-cell is most suitable from a lean perspective and from an ergonomic perspective.Further, today’s station needs to change because it is classified as a risk workstation. The final suggestion for a new station is supposed to work as a guideline for Penta. The suggestion with a U-cell needs to be developed further and more delimitation also needs to be done.
