The relationship between SOC, personality and stress (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Stress in the workplace is increasing in today's society, consequently, the workload and demands in health care will be greater. The study's purpose was to investigate whether there was a relationship between the SOC (sense of coherence), stress, personality variables (neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness, openness, agreeableness), and age. Even comparative analyzes were conducted with the purpose to investigate whether there are differences between groups. Analyses have been done to investigate if SOC and stress can be predicted. A survey was carried out on the children's section at a hospital in Sweden. There were 44 respondents who participated in the study, all women. Mean age was 48 years. Analyses were performed by correlations, regressions, t-test and ANOVA. The results of the study showed mainly a strong negative correlation between SOC and stress, which is consistent with previous research. The results also showed that SOC has a positive correlation with age among women, which differs from previous research where the correlation has previously only been seen among men. The study also demonstrated that age and stress had a significant negative correlation. The personality trait neuroticism had a negative correlation with SOC and was positively correlated with perceived stress. Conscientiousness showed a negative correlation with stress and a positive correlation with SOC. The study also showed that stress and neuroticism to 62% could predict SOC. The result showed that there was a significant difference in the degree of perceived stress among those who had worked 0-5 years, compared with those who had worked 6-20 years, as well as those who had worked 21 or more in the workplace.
