Chaos, stress and overwhelming emotions : A literature review of new graduated general nurses experiences (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Studies has shown that newly graduated nurses experiences of their expectations their first year is not consistent with the image and the expectations they have created themselves before graduation. The responsibility of being a nurse is big with many different areas of responsibilities. Nurses go through five stages of development from being a novice to become an expert. Being a newly graduated nurse was perceived as very stressful and caused stress. They felt unprepared for the obligations and the big responsibility that was required.

Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate newly graduated nurses experiences of the early days in their profession.

Method: The research method that was used in this study was a literature review based on nine qualitative studies. Nine qualitative studies were analyzed by using Friberg´s (2012A) method that includes five steps.

Result: Three main themes were identified; the socialization is a challenge; the feeling of a great responsibility; it is significant to have a relationship with the new colleagues. The result showed that newly graduated nurses were unprepared and overwhelmed by the responsibility that was required. The result also showed how important it was to get support and to fit in with their colleagues and how they felt that they were standing between two different worlds.

Conclusion: A structured support and deeper cooperation between health care businesses and nursing needs to be developed. Which give newly graduated nurses the right conditions to be prepared for their profession and give them the opportunity to develop.
