"You can't just catch them" : a phenomenological study about a group newly arrived teenagers experiences of school, activities and integration (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This paper aims to investigate how a group of newly arrived teenagers, aged 16-24, perceive and experience of, and in what way, school and leisure activities can function as supportive environments for learning and integration. The study was conducted in Sweden, an asylum accommodation located in Vänersborg. Selection of the target group, input materials and issues was motivated by highlighting some elements of the asylum seeker situation. To answer the study's purpose and questions, there have been nine interviews in which twelve people participated, with a phenomenological approach as a starting point. The collected data is processed and treated with inspiration taken from the analytical interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The final results of the analysis highlights three themes that were common to all interview answers. All participants believe that there is a desire to become a part of Swedish society but currently, they can experience a sense of alienation towards the Swedish citizens. Young people wish there were more opportunities for asylum seekers to associate with Swedish adolescents. By creating some sort of relationship to other Swedes, the participants believe that it can have a positive impact on their schooling, language development and way to become a part of the Swedish society.
