Quality of life among patients with heart failure : a literature study (English)
Abstract [en]

Heart failure is a lifelong condition, causing symptoms that affect the patient's quality of life. An estimated 15 out of 1000 registered patients are diagnosed with heart failure every year in Sweden. The condition is not curable; therefore it is essential for nurses to promote the patient's quality of life. Quality of life is a subjective experience and unique for every individual. The purpose of this study is to describe factors influencing the experiences of quality of life for patients with heart failure in their daily life. The qualitative approach used is the Friberg (2012) five-step-model analysis. Four themes were identified regarding patients' experiences of the quality of life, the experience of affinity, the experience of the support, the experience of existential thoughts and experiences of changes in daily life. The results showed that factors which affect patients' quality of life are unique and individual.Examples of factors that patients with heart failure in this literature study's result mentioned were that knowledge about their condition, having a positive attitude and a supporting social environment strengthened the patients' experiences of quality of life. A lack of support and knowledge weakened patient's experience of quality of life. The conclusion of this literature study is that it is essential for nurses to be attentive to the patient's unique values in order to provide a good individualized care for heart failure patients.
