The year after a myocardial infarction : a literature based study about the experiences and thoughts of the individuals who have survived a myocardial infarction (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: The largest public health problem in Sweden is cardiovascular disease and myocardial infarction is the leading single cause of death. Each year there are more people who survives a myocardial infarction. The hospital stay after a myocardial infarction is normally between two to four days and a lot of information is given during this time. A myocardial infarction can bring out many emotions and become life-changing.

Aim: The aim of this study is to illuminate individual's experiences of everyday life after a myocardial infarction.

Method: This study is literature based on qualitative studies and were analysed according to Friberg's(2012) five steps analyse.

Results: The themes that emerged were Thoughts on the myocardial infarction, The myocardialinfarctions impact on the wellbeing, Changes in circumstances in the daily life and A new outlook onlife. Eleven subthemes emerged and the result indicates that individuals experience many different emotions and thoughts. This including anxiety and concerns about their physical health among other. Support from different networks, such as health care, family and friends, is very important during the recovery.

Conclusion: Some individuals expressed the need for more information and support from the healthcare institutions. This would give them the instrument they need to perform and maintain lifestyle changes and manage the daily life after a myocardial infarction. Nurses need to understand and meet every individual. The follow-up needs to develope so that the information and support become more individual.
