Abstract [en]

Astrid Lindgrens children's fiction novels are some of the most appreciated novels of Swedish modern history. The novels themselves have been made into popular films. The impact of these films can be seen throughout, but not explicitly, the Swedish context. Scholars have conducted several gender based studies in which they found that the analyzed films contained gender based stereotypes of various kinds. Critics point out that these studies have only been conducted on films that, in relation to the presence of gender based stereotypes, constitutes critical cases under favorable circumstances. The brothers Lionheart (1973) and Ronja the robber's daughter (1981) are two films that in relation to the presence of gender based stereotypes work as critical cases under unfavorable circumstances. This paper conducted a case study and analyzed these films through the lenses of gender theory and was able to fill the hole in the existing literature by pointing out that gender based stereotypes in fact did exist within the context of this paper. Although no broader generalizations can be drawn from a study of this magnitude the claim that gender based stereotypes do not exist in these cases and cases like them can no longer be viewed as an absolute truth or fact.
