Abstract [en]

The aim of this small-N study is to compare the media framing of Muslim perpetrators in two terror attacks that occurred within two Western countries, the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris, France and the Sydney Siege in Sydney, Australia. The research answers whether the media framing of the perpetrators between our two cases differ in accordance to Orientalism by them being framed as a Muslim 'other'. Our theoretical approach is based upon the ontological position of constructivism and by media framing in order for us to carry out the research to detect Orientalist framings. An analytical framework was made with three different frames in order for us to detect if they were framed as an 'other'. The frames were a political, cultural and religious frame. Newspaper articles were chosen for the qualitative content analysis that was carried out with three different newspapers in each country. The study revealed that there were many similarities in the framing of the perpetrators between Australia and France but there also some differences in the framing of the perpetrators mostly in regards to culture and religion.
