Personality and employee empowerment (English)
Abstract [sv]

Syftet med studien var att ta reda på om samband finns mellan personlighetsdrag, upplevt medarbetarskap och upplevd arbetstrivsel. Med medarbetarskap menas medarbetarnas känsla av mening, kompetens, självbestämmande och påverkan på jobbet. I studien undersöktes det om det finns en skillnad mellan upplevt och önskat medarbetarskap och om denna skillnad kan förklaras av personlighet. Studien undersöker även om skillnaden har ett samband med trivsel. En enkätundersökning genomfördes på Sjöfartsverket. För att mäta personlighet användes personlighetsskalan Mini-IPIP6 och för att mäta upplevt och önskat medarbetarskap användes Spreitzer’s Empowerment Scale. Resultaten visar att personlighetsdraget neuroticism korrelerade negativt med det upplevda medarbetarskapet, önskat medarbetarskap och trivsel. Extroversion, vänlighet och samvetsgrannhet korrelerade positivt med upplevt medarbetarskap, önskat medarbetarskap och trivsel. Resultaten bekräftar till stor del tidigare forskning på området. Mycket forskning har tidigare gjorts på området personlighet och en etablerad teori på området är "Big Five". Medarbetarskap är å andra sidan ett relativt nytt begrepp.

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to find correlations between personality traits, experienced employee empowerment and job satisfaction. Employee empowerment means the sense of meaning, competence, self-determination and impact. The study examined if there was a gap between experienced and desired empowerment and if this gap could be explained by personality. The study also examined if this gap had a connection to satisfaction. The questionnaire was carried out at the Swedish Maritime Administration. To measure different personalities, the personality scale mini-IPIP6 was used and in order to measure experienced and desired empowerment, the Spreitzer’s Empowerment Scale was used. The results showed that the personality trait neuroticism correlated negatively with experienced employee empowerment, desired empowerment and job satisfaction. Extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness correlated positively with perceived employee empowerment, desired empowerment and job satisfaction. The results confirm previous research done with the well-established theory of the "Big Five, while employee empowerment is a rather new concept.
