Creativity and innovation from an employee perspective : A qualitative exploratory study in the public sector (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The intention of this study was to increase the knowledge about how the public sector can take advantage of employees' creativity and innovation, as previous research mostly was carried out in the private sector. The study investigated how participants want their organization to take advantage of their creativity and innovation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five employees within a municipal business. The participants represented various employee categories within the organization, and all were women in the age range 26-47. Data were analyzed with a thematic analysis. The results of the analysis identified three themes: Prerequisites/opportunities, communication and leadership. Our results demonstrate that an organization that wants to promote creativity and innovation need to give their employees conditions and opportunities to get ideas, develop them and then implement them in the organization. They need a climate of transparency, good relations and good cooperation with all those involved in their work. For this to be possible, the employees need leaders at all levels who are active role models and give priority to creativity and innovation and enables effective communication processes. The workplace context and the interpersonal interactions were important elements of the employees' creativity and innovation.
