Study of hard drive energy usage in a storage system (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Optimization of energy consumption is a popular and important subject in today's society, especially in IT. Being able to reduce the energy consumption in a system, even in small amounts, can in a larger perspective affect society's energy consumption in a significant way.

This thesis investigates the energy consumption of a storage system with several different RAID 5-configurations. Tests are conducted to determine the relationship between energy consumption and amount of disks, how much different read/write speeds affects this rela-tion, expected energy consumption over a year and optimal disk configuration with regards to storage capacity.

The results show that the energy consumption increases non-linearly when additional disks are added to the configuration, and that the increased read/write speeds doesn't compen-sate for the increased base energy consumption.
