Nurses' experiences of caring for patients with self-injurious behavior (English)
Abstract [en]
The aim of this study was to illuminate the nurse's experiences when meeting with patients who have a self-harming behavior. The method used was a literature review with both qualitative and quantitative studies based on ten articles, studies were published in Scientific Publications. The result of the study shows that the nurse has different experiences and feelings regarding patients with a self-harming behavior. The nurses perceive themselves insufficient due to lack of knowledge in the area which affected their feelings and attitude. The result was divided into two areas, mixed emotions and limitations in health care. Conclusion: The lack of knowledge, training, supervision and guidelines were great. The results of the study show that the nurse's experiences were reflected by mostly negative emotions but that this may be related to lack of knowledge and structure in how to care for this population.
