Abstract [sv]

Tor är en välkänd anonymitetstjänst som krypterar routad trafik. När man använder Tor prioriteras anonymitet framför prestanda, då Tor-nätverket av många skäl är långsamt. I denna rapport undersöks det om en Raspberry Pi har prestanda nog att agera som en trådlös Tor-gateway, och vad som flaskhalsar i en sådan topologi.

Två scenarion mättes: ett där enkortsdatorn konfigureras med Tor, och ett där den konfigureras utan. Sedan mäts och jämförs överföringskapacitet, hämttid samt processorlast, vid hämtningen av en hemsida (både en belägen i Sverige, och en utomeuropeisk). Ytterligare mätningar med Tor med olika klockning på Raspberry Pi:ens processor, gjordes för att mäta processorns inverkan på överföringshastigheten.

Mätningarna visar att Raspberry Pi:en är fullt kapabel till att användas som en trådlös Tor-gateway, och att topologins flaskhals varierar beroende hur belastat Tor-nätverket är i övrigt.

Vid hög belastning, spelar enhetens processor lite roll, då Tor-nätet ändå inte kan överföra fortare. När Tor var lågt belastat visade mätningarna att en högre klockning på processorn gav en 30 % snabbare hämttid än med den lägsta klockningen.

Abstract [en]

Tor is a widely known service that provides anonymous routing by encryption. When Tor is used, performance is sacrificed over anonymity, as the Tor network is for many reasons, slow. In this report it is investigated if a Raspberry Pi has enough performance to act as a wireless Tor gateway, and to investigate any potential bottlenecks in such a topology.

Two scenarios were measured: one where the Raspberry Pi is configured with Tor and one where it is configured without. The data rate, the retrieval time, and the CPU load are then measured when a website is retrieved (one which is located in Sweden, and one located outside of Europe). Further measurements were done to measure the processing unit's impact on the data rate. It was found that the Raspberry Pi is fully capable of being used as a wireless Tor gateway, and that the bottleneck of the topology varied depending on if the Tor network is under heavy load or not.

When Tor was heavily loaded, the measurements showed that a higher clock rate on the single-board computers CPU, as the network itself couldn't transfer any faster. When Tor was under light load, it was found that a higher clock rate was equal to a higher data rate, and a 30% shorter time of retrieval.
