Willingness to live life fully without physical and mental limitations : a study about women's lifestyle change (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of death among older women. Many of the health problems faced by older women is the result of previous unhealthy lifestyle. Research shows great health benefits when people adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Aim: The aim was to highlight women's experiences of positive and lasting lifestyle change.

Method: Qualitative content analysis based on individually interviews with nine Swedish women.

Findings

: Lifestyle change took place gradually, often based in untenable life situation, fear and decisiveness. It appeared that physical activity, memory of life before the change, new strategies, inner harmony and social network were important to maintain lifestyle change. Family and friends was very important which gave motivation for wanting to live life fully without physical or mental limitation.

Conclusion: Decisions of lifestyle change are often made in connection with a changing process in life. To identify patients who are susceptible to lifestyle change is a challenge for the nurse. It is important to see individuals in a bigger perspective and in their own context to understand their willingness to live life fully.
