Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how women who have lived with a partner with substance abuse problems described their situation. The study had a qualitative approach and the method used in the study was semi-structured interviews where five women participated.

The analytical method used was content analyzes and the interviews were analyzed by relevant research and the social psychological perspective. Our results demonstrate that those developing a co-dependency have some form of dysfunction in the primary family. This is consistent with previous research in the area. The result also shows that women who lived in such relationships develop different strategies to cope with their lives, some were conscious and some were not. These strategies developed by the emotional impact that arose from living with an addictive partner. The dominant characteristics that the respondents expressed were stress, worry and anxiety. The dominant strategy was to try to control to reduce the emotional stress. The women described their relationships with a duality, both euphoric and destructive. The study results can lead to increased knowledge which may contribute to a greater understanding of people with a history of drug use consequences. This situation may lead to that those who are in such relationships faster can get support and they can understand that they are not alone. The increased knowledge can also reduce the taboo coating substance abuse problems.
