Abstract [en]

This study investigates code-switching from Swedish to English in fitness blog posts through a study of fourteen popular Swedish fitness blogs. By manually reading and analyzing 210 blog posts, I answered the questions of what, where and why bloggers code-switched. The code-switching constituents were divided into inter-sentential and intra-sentential code-switching. Further, single words were placed in groups of lexical categories and analyzed in terms of semantics. The results showed that intra-sentential code-switching was most common and that single nouns were switched to the highest extent. The majority of switched words were inflected by Swedish or English inflectional suffixes accordingly with suggested constraints, but one divergent example was found.

The eight most frequently switched words were all connected to fitness, except for one. Furthermore, there were tendencies towards a more frequent use of some English fitnessrelated words, e.g., squat, and indications of a correlation between commonly switched words and the Crossfit concept. Likely reasons for bloggers to code-switch were to create positive affiliation, or to convey an identical semantic message, which sometimes may be difficult when there is a lack of an equivalent Swedish word.
