Studiens syfte är att få kunskap om vilken roll IT-stödd omvärldsbevakning har vid ett svenskt lärosäte och studien förväntas bidra med kunskap om den IT-stödda omvärldsbevakningens betydelse för att bedriva studie- och karriärvägledning på ett framgångsrikt sätt. Studiens forskningsfrågor handlar om vilken roll IT-stödd omvärldsbevakning har i samband med studie- och karriärvägledning och vilka utmaningar som finns med IT-stödd omvärldsbevakning i detta sammanhang. Studien bedrevs i form av en fallstudie. Sex semistrukturerade intervjuer genomfördes med en utbildningsexpert och fem studie- och karriärvägledare vid Högskolan Väst och avdelningen Studentcentcentrum. IT-stödd omvärldsbevakning är en viktig aktivitet i det dagliga arbetet vid Studentcentrum. IT-stödd omvärldsbevakning handlar till stor del informationssökning hos myndigheter med uppdrag som relaterar till den verksamhet som bedrivs på Studentcentrum men även information hämtad från andra universitet och högskolor är av återkommande intresse. IT-stödd omvärldsbevakning sker oftast på uppdrag av organisationens målgrupp som är studenter. Medarbetarna vid Studentcentrum har som rutin att använda den elektroniska källan som en återkommande kunskapskälla i sitt arbete. Denna rutin innebär att personalen alltid hanterar information som är aktuell. Nyhetsbrev är ett sätt att styra det inkommande informationsflödet. IT-stödd omvärldsbevakning har stor betydelse för personalen vid Studentcentrum och arbetssättet upplevs som resurseffektivt. Medarbetarna använder sig i regel av inarbetade informationsvägar för att hitta den information man söker. Information betraktas som färskvara vilket ökar betydelsen av IT-stödd omvärldsbevakning. Utmaningar förknippade med IT-stödd omvärldsbevakning handlar generellt om de Internetbaserade IT-systemens utformning vad gäller graden av användbarhet, särskilt för personer med nedsatt syn. Personalen ser ett behov av att bli mer tillgängliga genom användandet av diverse IT-system. Realtidskommunikation genom till exempel chatt och Skype är av intresse.
